My almost entirely spoiler free analysis on the morality and ethics themes in Undertale

There's nothing too inherently in your face that would suggest undertale is a horror game, however it still manages to feel horrifying in its own sense.

It makes you afraid not of the game but of you, yourself. The fact you could become desensitized enough to harm the innocent out of morbid curiosity and an urge to complete the game is a very bizarre thought, and yet it all feels so normal at times.. Because that's all it is to you; a game.

But here's where undertale is unique, instead of letting this feeling remain 2d, it adds the concept of consequences and depth to your choices.

Now, You're no better than the games main antagonist, and depending on your choices you practically ARE the main antagonist. There's something scary about seeing all these Consequences to your actions, however big or small they were.

You can die and respawn infinitely, and eventually you'll learn every single character's patterns. You can predict them.. ..but they'll never be able to predict you. It's one sided. The characters are written in a way that makes them feel real. Not literally, but their emotions, their ambitions, their relationships.. It's all very resemblent of real people's goals. Nobody is bad or good.

However, while you grow and adapt, over time, you'll be able to beat them anyway, ignoring their personalities and button mashing to avoid paying attention to their dialogue. It really makes you wonder.. If you could do all these terrible things and justify it as "it's just a game", imagine what you could do to real people with the right "justifications"

After doing so many pacifists at first, as most people typically do, you'll start to get bored. Curious on what would happen if you killed certain people. Curious to see new content. Who's that sound like?

Yep. The games main antagonist, Flowey, is meant to literally represent you, the player

Doesn't that feel ominous to you? The fact this game manages to make the only unjustified merciless villan YOU? It really makes you question your morality and stop to think about how your choices affect others.. Or at least it did for me.

Thats kind of what I love about it, though. Undertale isn't "just a game", it's a morbid but realistic reflection of human nature, and how our own greedy desires can sometimes overwrite our morals.

The character's deep and interesting individual stories, their bonds, their morals and values... Its all resemblent of us as humans.. Its that concept alone that kept me so hyperfixated on it in the first place; For Undertale is the only peice of media I've ever found that truley makes you fear yourself and what you're capable of as a human being.

Anyways sorry for the rant type post, I just figured I'd share my views on the game ^_^

- He is hesitant, not bc he’s shy but because he doesn’t know how you’ll react

-friend?? Not friend?? Romance? Who? Him?

-all in all, Sans has to gather a lot of resolve to do something daring such as kissing or simply hold your hand.

- but oh gods, when he finally kisses you, his finger tips are tingly, his face is a bright blue, his soul thumps wildly and he has this dopey-lovey smile on his face for the rest of the week.

- definitely would shower you with subtle things around people, three taps = I love you, making sure you eat, giving you you’re daily reminders of how he adores you!

+ in private, Sans is the very definition of golden retriever bf

+ happy to be included even if nothing is happening, simp 101!

UnderSwap • Sans • Blue

- Would 20/10 be starstruck for the first time, he would ask if he could kiss you off the bat then apologizes for his straight-forwardness.

- Blue would offer tea or coffee as a formal apology and promise to do things slowly!

- slowly as in; opening doors for you, texts good morning + his plans for the day (would ask if you’d like to join), holding your hand once you’re comfortable

- since he felt like he scared you the first time, blue would remind you that he *can* take it slow as in spontaneous dates, small walks and adding you into his everyday lifestyle, or accommodating his to fit around yours!

- first kisses are awkward, he knows this, so he did a ton of research to avoid it! That how prepared he is! Totally not because he is nervous no siree!!

+ the first time, he is a nervous wreck. He cannot look at you for more than 5 seconds or he glows. He rubs his hands on his pants often and stutters when asking if he could kiss you, only to get more brighter when you agree.

+ When he gains the confidence, he is all over you. He wants to always hold your hand and show you things he thinks excites you, always wants to be near and talk about whatever comes to mind, because with you, Blue is always happy!

Underfell • Sans • Red

- could care less abt love and relationship lovey-dovey things — totally not a lie because he is a badboi™

- looks at couples in the streets, wondering when it would be his turn for something so out of place with him.

- he doesn’t just want *anybody* though. He already had his eyes sockets set on you, and whatever Red wants, he gets.

- he knows you like more mellowed-out people, he was just a friend and he was fine with it. But it sux bc he wanted to be more but also did not want to scare you away so he… tries.

- likes doing small things for you. Apartment a mess? Cleaned magically. Slept in on a work night? It’s suddenly ur day off! Ran out of a specific item? No worries has your back. Doesn’t take credit but seeing your smile is enough for him.

+ was once brave enough to hold your hand, he frequently thinks about it.

+ a kiss??? Yes please omg he wants one. He slips the tongue much to your surprise and plays it off as a player move.

+ in reality, he panicked and tried to play it cool; internally fights with himself for slipping the cool dude™ act.
