Ukraine and war: it’s high time to take off the rose-coloured glasses
In early November, Ukraine’s top general Valery Zaluzhny admitted that the war in Ukraine had reached a stalemate and that help from Western allies was running out, The Nation reports.
In December, Republicans did not support the Biden administration’s request for billions in new military aid to Ukraine. Hungary vetoed badly needed cash aid from the EU. President Biden’s promise that allies would support Ukraine “as long as it takes” turned into a promise to support the country “as long as we can.” Clearly, the time for magical thinking has passed.
Washington mobilised its allies to provide arms and support, and imposed tough sanctions against Russia. NATO was reinvigorated and expanded. In just over a year, the US gave Ukraine $75 billion in major military aid, an amount almost equal to Russia’s entire annual military budget.
However, that was before. Now, with another harsh winter looming, the much-publicised Ukrainian “offensive” has failed. China, India and much of the global South have stepped in, the Russian economy has recovered from sanctions. Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe, is engaged in a war of attrition with a country that is bigger, has more people, more troops, more artillery and control of the air. The US plans to increase production of 155 million artillery shells from 30,000 a month to 90,000 or 100,000 in 2025. Russia plans to produce 2 million a year.

Senate Passes $1.7 Trillion Bill to Fund Gov’t, Aid Ukraine
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate passed a massive $1.7 trillion spending bill Thursday that finances federal agencies through September and provides another significant round of military and economic aid to Ukraine one day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s dramatic address to a joint meeting of Congress. The bill, which runs for 4,155 pages, includes about $772.5 billion for domestic…

People who tell you they they don't trust the media will read headlines and immediately trust them when they say that this many millions or this many billions are in a new aid package to Ukraine. What they don't understand is that most of the time the value of the military aid that is being sent over was already paid for for our use, in some cases decades ago. It is going to expire at some point, and since we're definitely not going to use it, what that means is that we'd actually pay more to dispose of that weaponry then we pay when we send it to Ukraine. So what we're doing now actually is a cost-saving thing. Instead of paying to dispose that weaponry we are paying less to dispose of Russians.

Blinken: US urging Israel to investigate airstrike that killed World Central Kitchen workers | Reuters
Washington has urged Israel to conduct a swift, thorough and impartial investigation into an Israeli airstrike that killed seven aid workers with the World Central Kitchen charity in Gaza, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.
Blinken arrived in Paris for talks with senior officials including President Emmanuel Macron hours after the Washington-based NGO was struck by an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza, adding pressure on Washington to toughen its stance in the war between Israel and Hamas.
"We've spoken directly to the Israeli government about this particular incident. We've urged a swift, a thorough and impartial investigation," Blinken told reporters at a press conference in Paris, adding that humanitarian workers have to be protected.
"These people are heroes, they run into the fire, not away from it," he said of the NGO workers killed in the strike. "We shouldn't have a situation where people who are simply trying to help their fellow human beings are themselves at grave risk."
But Blinken stopped short of directly condemning the attack, unlike his French counterpart Stephane Sejourne. Speaking alongside Blinken, Sejourne voiced France's "firm condemnation" of the Israeli airstrike.
"Nothing can justify such a tragedy," he said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the airstrike was unintended and tragic, and the military pledged an independent inquiry.
Biden faces pressure from foreign partners, human rights groups and some of his fellow Democrats in Congress to impose conditions on arms transfers to rein in Israel’s offensive in Hamas-ruled Gaza where health officials say more than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed, many of them civilians.
"The killing of these employees – and so many U.N. and other aid workers – is unacceptable. Enough is enough. There must be an immediate and independent investigation," Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen said.
Hours before the Israeli strike on WCK workers on Monday, Reuters reported that the Biden administration was considering proceeding with an $18 billion arms transfer package to Israel.
Asked if incidents like the killing of WCK workers made the United States think twice about its "flood of weapons" to Israel, Blinken did not address the specific question but said all U.S. arms transfers happened consistent to policy requirements.
"From Day One, we have worked to impress upon Israel, the imperative of protecting civilians, of adhering fully to international humanitarian law, to the law of armed conflict. That is something that we are looking at and review on a regular basis," he added.
CRITICAL MOMENT IN UKRAINE
Blinken was due to hold talks with Macron later in the day. "You can sense the Americans are a bit uncomfortable at the moment," said one French diplomat, pointing to the contrast between Washington's humanitarian efforts in Gaza and its supply of weapons to Israel.
Earlier in the day, Blinken said Ukraine was at a critical moment in its war with Russia and urgently needs more Western support, bemoaning the stalemate in Congress over a multibillion-dollar military package for Kyiv.
"It is absolutely essential to get Ukrainians what they continue to need to defend themselves, particularly when it comes to munitions and air defences," he told reporters.
"It's another reason why the supplementary budget request that President (Joe) Biden has made to (the U.S.) Congress must be fulfilled as quickly as possible."
Biden has urged the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives to endorse the military and financial aid package, but House Speaker Mike Johnson has held up the matter for months, citing domestic priorities.

🇺🇲 🚨 NATIVE AMERICAN NAVAJO TRIBE ALARMED BY U.S. SPENDING ON FOREIGN AID
The Native American Navajo Tribe, the largest tribe to survive the genocide of native Americans, are deeply alarmed by U.S. plans to spend billions on Foreign Aid, while local tribes only receive a small fraction of that amount, according Justin Ahastin, Executive Director of the Washington office of the Navajo Nation Reservation, speaking to Russia's Ria Novosti.
“It is deeply troubling to see the federal government promising billions of dollars to foreign countries in the name of national security while the 574 tribes within its own borders receive a fraction of that support,” the Navajo Executive Director said, commenting on U.S. President Joe Biden's request for National Security assistance to Ukraine.
Ahastin focused on the enduring legacy of injustices targeting the native population of the U.S., including forced relocations and generations of exploitation.
“Today, the legacy of these injustices is evident in significant health disparities among our people, with cancer being the second leading cause of death on the Navajo Nation,” he told reporters.
Ahastin also emphasized the tribes disappointment that compensation amendments, which he called a necessary step in addressing long-standing health problems and societal disparities for the Navajo Nation and other tribes in the United States, and were later removed from the Defense Budget.
"Plus, the inadequate provision of basic services such as health care, education and infrastructure on tribal lands is a critical concern. Federal funding and resources are often insufficient or unavailable due to bureaucratic red tape, leaving many people without access to natural services," added the reservation representative, criticizing the “marginalized” position of the Navajos in policy decisions made by the US authorities.

German Frankfurt residents protest against support for Ukraine
People in Frankfurt am Main took to the streets to protest against the funding of Ukraine’s armed forces.
People who support the war-torn country attempted to disrupt the protest, but people carrying Ukrainian flags were dispersed by police officers.
On 19 December, a similar action took place in Berlin. The wave of demonstrations in Germany was caused by a decision in parliament to cut the budget to allocate more than 60 billion dollars to Ukraine.
