What To Do With Grey

The rain sketches the Thames along my back,

Sharp bones and muscle tension forms the city,

Nerves are pressured to act,

The cold strikes without pity.

What to do with grey,

The damp elements and colours,

That form a useless clay,

To shape collapsing relations with others.

London has stronger tools,

Beneath it's skin a hidden vigour,

To reassert the rules,

When embittered, to find what a happy life might constitute.

My world blurs along the windows into blinking lights,

But rising the trees, buildings, roads, my feelings are resolute,

Kind surprises, mugs of tea, waiting buses, assisted plight,

Are where the living plant their roots.

Crimson Bead

I took off my headphones and heard the organs of the subway;

The heartbeat of the escalators,

The flow of trapped air into the bellowing lungs of train platforms,

Splitting through the concentrated breeze and the murmurs of service workers sending us where we need to be,

To tackle our personal viruses, the smiles and grimaces, infectious intimations of our responsibilities,

To naked sound the music of man does not compare, these naturally occurring urban instruments, in a breath of smoggy air a human melody,

I am the blood and beat of this city, until I bleed out onto the pavement, staining the pale green bridges that thread across the Thames,

A crimson bead running along the skin of these streets, melts to the liquid sound of a busker's steel drums, reflecting the sun on my brow perfectly.
