Back to this scene because I’m having a slight embolism and I really want to share this one. Let’s have a look at the original version of this line:
Akechi
所詮、烏合の衆⋯復讐なんて気概、アイツらにありませんよ。
shosen, ugou no shuu... fukushuu nante kigai, aitsura ni arimasen yo
No chance. They're nothing but cattle anyway... They have no backbone without his guidance.
Absolutely not. They're just cattle. Without him, they haven't the resolve for anything as strenuous as revenge.
Specifically, let’s have a look at this little phrase, 烏合の衆 ugou no shuu, translated as “cattle”. Does it look familiar?
How about that first kanji? Seen it before? Look, here it is a bit bigger:
Something missing from it, maybe?
THE PHRASE AKECHI USES THAT IS TRANSLATED AS “CATTLE” LITERALLY MEANS A MOB OF FUCKING CROWS. CROWS.
C R O W S.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.
Now, this is a valid translation. It’s a corresponding idiom: they say flock of crows, we say herd of cattle; the meanings are equivalent. But we have lost a little hint in there, invisible to Shido, that Akechi does not mean what he says.
Remember, “Crow” was the name Akechi chose for himself. He walked in saying “I think karasu (crow) would be a good codename”. So is he foreshadowing here, or even expressing, in a bitterly ironic way, what the Phantom Thieves will eventually tell him: you are more like us than you are not like us?
Or is he just using the idiom, without thinking? But he seems to think about every word he says, as is clear from the fact that so many of them have double meanings.
So when I said in my earlier post, “oh yeah, he actually does think the other Phantom Thieves are useless, he despises them”... I’m not so sure any more. I think there’s a bit of conflict here, which is why he evades the kill order on them.
