NPR will no longer post fresh content to its 52 official Twitter feeds, becoming the first major news organization to go silent on the social media platform. In explaining its decision, NPR cited Twitter's decision to first label the network "state-affiliated media," the same term it uses for propaganda outlets in Russia, China and other autocratic countries.

Elon Musk personally fucked over NPR so they walked.

i think i was the first monkey to type it into a popular post (a reblog comment that blew up, and then there were other popular posts to dunk on twitter and it became a tentpole of our identity)... but it's a pretty obvious joke that i'm sure lots of people came up with independently, so i don't know how much credit i could really take.

but here's the weird thing... that "popular post" apparently disappeared??

i found a handful of reddit screenshots, but no sign of the post itself anywhere still on tumblr.

one of the reddit posts had a source link to my reblog, but the post no longer exists (i didn't delete it): https://mylittleredgirl.tumblr.com/post/636265137448353792/antifasuccubus-like-tbh-there-was-a-time

i went into my archive around that post id (late november 2020) in case the problem was a change in link url style or that op's username changed, but the post isn't there. i googled phrases from the post itself (both with site:tumblr and otherwise) and nothing.

i don't think i've ever seen a viral tumblr post disappear and take reblogs with it like that. does this happen all the time?

Well, Elmo Muskrat has done it. Who knows why...to open up server space, to purge evidence, I don't know, but ALL media on Tweets pre-2014 has been deleted. Every gif, video, picture, anything with a t.co link is gone.

If you go to the search box and type in From:yourusername until:2014-01-01 Then click the "Media" tab, you will see the damage:

All those t.co links were once images, reactions, art, videos. BTW yes Gleeks, based on the timeline this means any and all tributes to Cory are permanently altered.

Ellis Munk will probably do another media purge soon so take my advice...archive your shit now, then hit da bricks...there are plenty of alternatives out there! (Or you know, just stay at Tumblr, you may not like their changes but boy they aren't stinkers like what they do at X!)

Ok I’ve been away from fandom and off most social media for a while with trying to focus on work and the dissertation and the first go at the academic job market, but apparently Elon’s shithole is guaranteeing that I’ll never go back there now that I can’t even see the tweets from the news sources I follow without being told I’ve exceeded my daily limit 🙃

I think one of the best ways to explain the difference twitter and tumblr is that on twitter they break character every third post whereas on tumblr we commit to the bit so hard we commit federal misdemeanors.
