The Talon Saga + who can cook
Ember: Was raised in a compound where all of her meals were provided, then in Crescent Beach where her guardians provided dinner and she tended to eat out for lunch. So she can handle breakfast assemblies and operate a toaster, but god forbid she has to do anything with a stove. Can only cook if she has a recipe and is being supervised.
Garret: Actively disliked KP. The rest of the Chapter house probably ALSO disliked Garret-on-KP, because he may or may not be cursed. Burns rice and coffee on the regular, managed to burn pasta more than once, Riley asked him to help with lunch one (1) time and promptly banned him from the kitchen.
Riley: Good at cooking. Unreasonably good at cooking. At some point between going rogue and freeing hatchlings from Talon, he got it in his head that he needs to make sure he can provide for them— especially in the early days when they only had one safe house— and that includes being able to provide warm food. Promptly sped-run learning how to cook, and can now crank out a restaurant-worthy dish if he has enough prep time. He claims it’s therapeutic.
Wes: Also good at cooking, for very similar reasons to Riley, paired with being given a studio apartment and a sizeable stipend when he was sixteen, and deciding might as well learn how to make all of those fancy dishes that my family couldn’t afford when I was younger, since I’m stuck here. Still not excellent at it, doesn’t particularly enjoy it, but he maintains it’s an important life skill to have.
Tristan: He’s good for being in the Order. Being in the Order being the most important part of that statement, because he’s working with whatever ingredients are provided in bulk. Other Western Chapterhouse soldiers love having him on KP because he knows how to keep things from being under- or overdone, and he’s generally good with ingredient ratios, but when it comes to seasoning or anything high brow he’s completely lost.
Dante: Can make depression meals and not much else. Survived off of bagels and lunch meat while in Talon.
Jade: Gives the vibes that she can cook, cannot actually cook. The monks at her temple survived on donations from the townspeople. She, being a dragon, ate primarily meat, which the monks didn’t want in their temple, so she did a lot of hunting and tended to eat whatever she caught raw/dragon-style barbecued. Makes good tea, though.

Screen International NEWS First look at Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in ‘Freud’s Last Session’ BY MICHAEL ROSSER 11 APRIL 2023
Babylon Berlin star Liv Lisa Fries has joined Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in the cast of Freud’s Last Session, which is in its final stages of filming in Ireland.
A first look at the film, in which Oscar-winner Hopkins plays Sigmund Freud and Goode plays author C.S. Lewis, has been released by WestEnd Films, which handles sales alongside US-based CAA Media Finance.
German actress Fries plays Freud’s daughter in the film, which is set on the eve of the Second World War and sees the founder of psychoanalysis invite Lewis to debate the existence of God.
Further cast announced today includes Jodi Balfour, known for Apple+ series For All Mankind; Stephen Campbell Moore of Epix recent adaptation of War Of The Worlds; Jeremy Northam, who played UK prime minster Anthony Eden in Netflix’s The Crown; and Orla Brady of Star Trek: Picard and Into The Badlands.
Freud’s Last Session is being directed by Matt Brown and was written by Mark St. Germain with revisions by Brown, based on the play by the same name. Producers are Alan Greisman, Rick Nicita, Meg Thomson, Brown, Hannah Leader, and Robert Stillman. Irish producers are Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan of Subotica Productions.
The project reunites Oscar-winning production designer Luciana Arrighi with Brown, having previously collaborated on 2015’s The Man Who Knew Infinity. Cinematographer Ben Smithard, who previously worked on The Father with Hopkins, has also joined the project.
Costume designer Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, Bafta award-winning make-up designer Morna Ferguson (The Wonder) and editor Paul Tothill (Atonement) complete the creative team.
WestEnd Films and CAA Media Finance announced several sales last year that saw Sony Picture Classics secure a multi-territory deal, including North America.
The film is an Ireland-UK co-production made with support from Screen Ireland and the UK Global Screen Fund.
Financing has been provided by Media Finance Capital, LipSync Productions, M.Y.R.A. Entertainment and a pool of independent financiers including 14 Sunset, Movieland Entertainment, the Solomon Directive, the Travelling Picture Show and Lipper/Daly Entertainment.
*Like Jeremy Northam, Jodi Balfour plays Mrs. Kennedy in The Crown. Matthew is Lord Snowdon. Stephen Campbell Moore is in the Downton Abbey movie. Ben Smithard is the DOP. GOODE connections!!! Can’t wait.

Yuletide Recs
Eight recs from eight fandoms for Yuletide 2023. Housekeeper in a Spin (2728 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: All Creatures Great and Small (TV 2020) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Siegfried Farnon & Mrs. Hall | Audrey Hall, Mrs. Hall | Audrey Hall & Everyone Characters: Mrs. Hall | Audrey Hall, Siegfried Farnon, Tristan Farnon, James Herriot, Helen Herriot Summary: "Mrs Hall's cross," Tristan told his brother. "I assumed it was your fault, but she doesn't seem cross with you."
"Why would she be cross with me?" Mr Farnon demanded. "When do I ever do anything wrong?" Comment: Excellent Audrey POV fic that really captures the feel of the show: light and slightly comic domestic/local matters, but with deeper, stronger and more serious thoughts and feelings underpinning them, so that the serious thing, when it emerges, hits with a kick in the guts. But overall, the warmth between the characters, particularly between Audrey and Siegfried, is what shines through.
Major Opportunity (3092 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Blackadder Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Edmund Blackadder/Kevin Darling Characters: Edmund Blackadder, Kevin Darling, George Colthurst St. Barleigh, Baldrick (Blackadder), Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat Summary: After being presumed dead, Blackadder seizes his chance to escape the trenches, and hopefully avoid ending up actually dead.
Comment: Beautifully done Blackadder fic that would fit right into an episode - so of course it's full of memorable lines from everyone, up to and including General Melchett. I Will Never Leave You (9396 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Gilded Age (TV 2022) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Ada Brook & Agnes van Rhijn, Mr. van Rhijn/Agnes van Rhijn, Ada Brook & Oscar van Rhijn Characters: Ada Brook, Agnes van Rhijn, Oscar van Rhijn, Mr. van Rhijn (The Gilded Age) Additional Tags: Pregnancy, Miscarriage, Infant Death, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-con, Implied/Referenced Sexual Assault, Period-Typical Sexism, Period Typical Attitudes, Religion, Codependency, Dysfunctional Family Summary:
There are few bonds deeper than sisterhood. Over the years, Agnes has always looked out for Ada...and Ada has always made herself available to Agnes. Comment: A lovely, in-depth look at the strong and complicated bond between Ada and Agnes from early in Agnes's marriage up to the beginning of canon. It's Ada's POV, and the narrative is coloured by her perceptiveness and warmth, but I can really hear Christine Baranksi delivering every bit of Agnes's dialogue. The style is also very fitting for these characters and this time and place.
An Ingenue Looks at Seventy (1881 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Only Murders in the Building (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Loretta Durkin/Oliver Putnam Characters: Loretta Durkin, Oliver Putnam, Mabel Mora Additional Tags: Post-Season/Series 03, Character Study, old people fucking Summary:
Maybe this time, Loretta will get everything she ever dreamed of. Or at least a bigger piece of it. Comment: This was my main gift fic this year, and I've already posted about it, but I'm including it in my recs post as well, because I would want to rec it even if it hadn't been written for me. This story is everything I could have wished for when I requested a Loretta-centric fic. It's a beautiful character study, set post-canon, with guest appearances by Oliver and Mabel. I love everything about Loretta's POV, and the story is chock full of great lines, but I also really like the way her relationship with Oliver is depicted, both in public and in private. The author also gets extra points for the tag "old people fucking".
Crepusculine Confabulations (2324 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Reluctant Widow - Georgette Heyer Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Francis Cheviot/Louis de Castres Characters: Francis Cheviot, Louis de Castres Additional Tags: AU, Character Death Fix, Yuletide, Gift Fic Summary:
Two conversations, in twilight, to bracket the events of the novel. That is: you didn't think that Francis was being wholly truthful, did you? Did you? Comment: The Reluctant Widow will never be on my list of favourite Heyers, for a bunch of reasons, but the stand-out feature of it is Francis Cheviot - and this post-canon story focused on Francis does not disappoint. Full of nicely Heyer-ish language plus some VERY Francis machinations, this is overall an excellent portrayal of Francis.
A Case Report Regarding the Brick Lane Murders (5866 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Peter Grant & Thomas Nightingale Characters: Thomas Nightingale, Peter Grant (Rivers of London), Miriam Stephanopoulos Additional Tags: Case Fic, Period-Typical Racism, Period Typical Attitudes, Series level violence, There's a Murder, Yuletide 2023 Summary:
A case NIghtingale worked in 1919 gives insight into a new murder investigation. Comment: An excellent case fic that really captures the feel of canon. The case has links to another case Nightingale worked on in 1919, very, very early in his career, and the depiction of how he was in his late teens compared to how he is now, really makes this story stand out.
Little Intimacies (1344 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Wheel of Time (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Moiraine Damodred & Lan Mandragoran, Lan Mandragoran/Maksim Characters: Lan Mandragoran, Maksim (Wheel of Time) Additional Tags: Mid-s2 Summary:
Two nights after Moiraine sends him away, Lan has a conversation with another Warder. Comment: A beautifully written study of Lan at a very particular point in time. Moiraine is not physically present, but she is still present all the way through the story.
Yes, Lord President (4826 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 4/4 Fandom: Yes Minister Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Jim Hacker, Humphrey Appleby, Bernard Woolley Additional Tags: Period Typical Attitudes, very loosely based on a true story Comment: This story is brilliant and I love it. It is everything that anyone could ever want in a Yes Minister fic. The author has absolutely nailed Hacker, Sir Humphrey and Bernard, and the plot is administratively absurd enough to be an episode of the show. It is structured like the Yes Minister books, with excerpts from Hacker's diary and from official files, which also works really well. I laughed and laughed and laughed reading this - and there truly is no higher praise for a story based on a show that did likewise.

Ask game: 5 and 16
5: What's a fic idea you've had that you will never write?
On one hand, I refuse to acknowledge that I will never write something, because there's always a chance and I don't like closing doors on myself. I told myself that I'd never write a Hanahaki fic and yet here I am with 10k words of it.
That being said, a fic that I'm highly unlikely to write is what I lovingly call "Worst MAD-fueled Alliance ever", a Talon Saga fanfic that goes off of the idea that, after Garret became a traitor to St. George, Tristan St. Anthony started looking into whether or not his claims had any merit, and accidentally stumbled across Dante Hill, who was trying to find a way out of Talon around the same time. So they start exchanging information to try to get to the truth of their respective organizations, talk a lot about their respective traitors-to-the-cause (Ember and Garret), and gain a lot of blackmail on each other. Pretty much a way to let the narrative foils meet in a non-violent manner, except Tristan is risking execution and Dante is risking being locked in a laboratory for the rest of his life.
16: At what point in the process do you come up with titles?
Literally the moment that my brain spits out something halfway decent. For LTNW, I decided during the outline that I wanted to name the installments after nuclear waste warning messages, because of the feeling of contamination and "something that humans shouldn't have fucked with is now in this world and it can't be erased". For all of my Blood of Eden stories, I decided the titles at least three weeks after I finished the final draft and it just sat on my computer, because I was NOT publishing something under the title "Jackal named himself after a dog and then got surprised when he had loyalty issues". Usually it's somewhere between those two points, though.

Soldier (Talon, #3) | Book Review
by Julie Kagawa
Tumblr media
Synopsis
When forced to choose between the sinister Talon organisation and being hunted by her own kind, dragon-human hybrid Ember fled. Even if it meant losing Garret, the dragon-slaying soldier she shares a deep bond with. Now Garret has uncovered secrets that will shake the foundations of dragons and dragon-slayers alike. Can the danger reunite them?
Source: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26050844-soldier
Thoughts
After the fiasco that was Rogue, I really expected nothing from Soldier. I will always be a fan of Kagawa’s works, I love the worlds she create. Unfortunately, Rogue really did a number on me, it crushed the hope I had for the Talon series. Yet, with an unexpected turn of events, the hope lost was repaired.
Soldier fixed what was done wrong in Rogue. I enjoyed every second I used to read this book. It was downright engaging to the point of my inability to put the book down. I can safely say, I love Soldier a lot.
Plot (storyline, writing style, and flow of story etc.)
In Soldier, the story focused on Garrett Sebastian Xavier. We learnt about Garrett’s childhood – what exactly happened – and how he became a part of the Order. As his story was always the minority in the first two books, reading about his life until the point of Soldier was absolutely interesting. I loved the mystery surrounding what happened with Garrett’s parents even though (in my opinion) it was not earth-shattering or mind-blowing.
Apart from Garrett’s past, we also finally got to read about the Order more. I already suspected the Order was vulnerable to corruption so the revelation was not shocking at all. Really, it was WHO that corrupted the Order that shocked me. I did not know how I did not see that coming.
Another reason I absolutely love Soldier was the fast paced storyline. Something about the secrets unraveling and the journey towards getting the spotlight on the secret made the book move so quickly. Like I said, this book was very engaging.
Characters
At the end of the day, as much as I disliked Ember in the first two books, I ended up really enjoying reading about her through Soldier. Finally, I see Ember Hill growing up, maturing and finally shedding that self entitled shell of hers. It is very evident in her newfound maturity in Soldier. And I liked how she managed the crisis that was her love triangle. She redeemed herself in this book.
On the other hand, shockingly, the one who managed to infuriate me was Riley/Cobalt. I disliked him in this book. Usually, I would be fine with mating bonds and whatnot. Hell, I am also fine with possessiveness (when done right). But not when Riley/Cobalt was how he was like in this certain picture. The second he decided he was not going to hide his feelings for Ember anymore, it was the second he began objectifying Ember. I did not like it when he kept insisting Ember was his. No Riley, Ember does not belong to anyone. And things just got worst when he found out about the dragon bond thing. His language was outrageous, he was always saying things such as “she’s mine” or “she is my mate”. If that is not objectification, what is? As much as I think Riley/Cobalt is one great badass, he sucks at being in love or having feelings for another. I would honestly love to see Jade kick Riley’s butt or give him a life lesson man...
Conclusion
If Kagawa kept this up, I know I will enjoy the next book too. I just wish she had decided to include Jade or Shen Lungs more in her later books. Oh, and I had almost forgotten to mention this but I am all for Tristan in Team Rogue so, please let there be no tragedies for Tristan.
I also understand that Dante is the bigger focus in the next book? Although damn, if only there could be lesser light shone on the brother. He’s boring and backbone-less.
If you’re like me and got all disappointed or hopeless for the Talon series after Rogue, hang in there. Trust me because the story gets better. I cannot promise the same for the last two books but at the very least, I can guarantee Soldier will not disappoint like how Rogue did.
Rating: 4.49/5

The Talon Saga + D&D Classes
Ember- Rogue (Assassin): One of the most cut and dry decisions, Ember was trained to be one of Talon's elite assassins, and doesn't dissapoint. From her stealth to her ability to neutralize enemies as quickly and silently as possible, she is Lilith's protege through and through.
Garret- Fighter (Battlemaster): Garret, someone who's spent the majority of his life in a militarized organization and whose only purpose in life for 13 years was to serve that organization, his fighting style is honed and perfected, with a lot of variation as to what he can do in the field of combat. However, like this class, his skills outside of combat can feel a bit lacking as he struggles to function in a non-militarized society.
Riley- Rogue (Inquisitive)/Paladin (Oathbreaker): Riley started his career in Talon as part of its spy network, dealing in information and sabotage— while Inquisitive rogues aren't built for hack and slash combat, they operate greatly from the shadows, where Riley tries to stay. His status as a paladin speaks towards his devotion to his cause and community, as well as his choice to sever ties with Talon and actively work against them.
Wes- Wizard (Divination)/Cleric (Knowledge Domain): Wes' specialty was, is, and will always be in support, not combat. His roots are in information gathering from hacking, finding enemy weak spots for other people to exploit and manipulating things from behind the curtain. As he left Talon, though, he not only gained a medical skillset, but also found something worth believing in— the thing that he devotes himself is not a god, but instead the underground that he and Riley formed, and that he works tirelessly to preserve.
Jade- Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery): While all dragons seem to have some sort of innate magic, Jade is the only one in the group who grew up in an environment where she could actually hone it into something usable, and doesn't hesitate to do so— as an eastern dragon, she's associated with water and storm, making her magic primarily weather-based.
Tristan- Fighter (Arcane Archer)/Rogue (Assassin): While Tristan may have his roots in traditional fighting styles, and can hold his own in hand-to-hand, he functions best far away from where the action is, where he can calculate, fire, and do a ridiculous amount of damage in one blow without ever being seen. While he shares a class with Garret and a subclass with Ember, the combination makes him unique from both, and especially suited for his place on the battlefield.
Mist- Rogue (Inquisitive)/Warlock (Archfey): With the skillset of a Basilisk, Mist may thrive in the shadows, gathering blackmail and issuing threats, but has also gained the favor of someone much more powerful than herself, who provides her with intel and resources, so long as she follows his orders. Her focuses, both as a rogue and a warlock, are in deception at their core, making her allegience a mystery to all but herself and her employer.
Dante- Bard (College of Whispers): Dante's skillset is reliant on his charisma, in convincing people to do what he wants, and in manipulating others to his benefit. He's made his den in a pit of vipers, and he wears that as a badge of honor.
Conclusion: There are so many rogues in this party

How long was Tristan conscious under the building? Did he immediately black out or did he hang on for a few minutes afterwards? Could he feel himself suffocating under the rubble? Did he feel his bones breaking as time went by? Did he cry because of the panic and pain of the stones that nailed him in place? Did he try to scream for help? Or did he just close his eyes and pray that he’d pass out quick?
This is just really important for me to know.
@tristanstanthony @rogueandwanted if I have to suffer then so do you.

a few things to know about me:
Tumblr media
— living the barzal and crosby life -ˋˏ religiously  ˊ-
— i write imagines and make gifs! / do not repost and or steal any of my work + gifs (no matter how bad they are) on other platforms ie. twitter, instagram, inc. tumblr
— the realest hockey quote is still the one where joey said “hockey was a big mistake” bc hun, it is. i dove head first and never came back up
— i love mat when he’s speaking french cos he kinda looks like a smol bèbè. however, tito speaking french? don’t ask me about it i have a weakass pussy
— i’m an adult poc so pls pls lmk if you’re a minor before you interact with me. i don’t mind chatting with yalls but i tend to say things that would for sure get me to jail and i don’t think i’ve watched enough prison break for me to escape that shit
— i have a soft spot for captains ang goalies but i’ve never wanted anything else than to be dicked down by a d man. (ryan graves, i’m talking to u)
— forwards are cute too but they do be sloppy sometimes,, mathew i’m looking straight at you don’t you dare look away
— my ass is pretty much owned/legally allowed to be railed by mat barzal, sidney crosby, tyson jost, andre burakovsky, and sebastian aho only.
