At first, it was at your job, he would come at least three times a day, getting his daily Iced Americano fix. 
“Isn’t it unhealthy to drink more than one of these a day?” you asked, it was slower today so you had time to talk to him as he paid.

do you have paper recommendations (for both drawings and watercolor paintings)? i want to get back into traditional art and don't really know were to start. also what pencils do you use? and watercolors? or do you use guache? what brushes should i get? sorry i know this is a lot of questions but it is a bit overhwhelming and i really liked you're ghost paintings 😊 and i don't want to buy bad things
oh dear, first of all: thank you, I'm very happy to hear you enjoy my silly stuff! And it is always great to hear people getting back to traditional art, since it seems like almost everyone is doing digital art exclusively these days (this is NOT me shitting on DA, i love you digital art people).
Anyway, yes, there's *a lot* of options out there and it is so, so important to get at least okay-ish quality equipment.
Paper
Paper is, in my opinion the most important factor, especially for watercolour works. switching to good quality paper was an absolute game changer - 0 exaggeration!
Watercolour paper:
I use mostly Hahnemühle Britannia 300g/m² cold pressed with matte surface. it comes with different surface options, depending on the effect you want (rougher surface etc., but i don't vibe with that). it is still relatively affordable, but still, hurts the bank account quite a bit.
If i want to go for some more silly stuff, i use Hahnemühle Burgund 250g/m². because it's thinner it is cheaper (you just can't put as much water and as many layers on it, which, for my use case is usually perfectly fine).
If i want to go full fancy I use the Hahnemühle mould made 300g/m². It's handmade paper, not from trees but with fabric, it is incredible how well the colours work on this stuff. Many people use Arches paper, but that is way too expensive for me. and I'm very happy with the Hahnemühle.
The difference between cheap as shit no-name watercolour paper and some good quality brand paper is, and I cannot express this enough, incredibly big. those ugly rims and splotches and uneven colour fades? that's the cheap paper's fault, not yours. It made me really desperate thinking I'm just too stupid for art, when it wasn't my fault.
For drawings I also use Hahnemühle:
my favourite is Skizze 190: very smooth surface, very white and very affordable!
another is Nostalgie: It feels even smoother in a different way, is less white. at first touch they seem identical, but handle very differently. this one is just as affordable as the Skizze 190 one.
Cheaping out on paper means you'll pay with happiness, really. save your nerves and motivation and spend the money on nice paper. trust me.
I'm not sure, Hahnemühle is available wherever you live, but go to an art supply store (a good one) and ask for help there!
Pencils
I exclusively use Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils these days. They are very consistent in their...abrasion? there's no hard chunks in the lead, and they cost very little. They also have the Lumograph Black pencils which have a high charcoal level, which is super cool when you have very dark areas, because it won't get super shiny!
Watercolours
I got myself a set of Lukas Studio Watercolours and added a few more that i use often/ needed more than the ones already included in the set. They're not very expensive (compared to other big brands that everyone seems to use) and i like them. I never tried the expensive Windsor etc. paints, though. The price is very attractive and I never had any problems with them.
I also have a Gouache set that I got second hand from my sister by Caran d'Ache. I don't know whether it's good or not, because I rarely use it, mostly for accents on my watercolour paintings.
Brushes
until very recently I used rather cheap but good synthetic brushes for ethical reasons. I accidentally bought a natural hair one and it was....extremely good. With a heavy heart I now switched full time to much more expensive Kolinskis. Ethically this is an absolute nightmare and I will try to buy as few as possible and use them forever before buying new ones. But they are, unfortunately, much better. I wouldn't necessary recommend the brand I used because they're bad at keeping a tip, though.
But if you're just starting: go to an art supply store and get 3 synthetic ones in small, medium and slightly bigger with a nice tip and you'll be very happy for quite a while, i promise!
I also highly recommend getting a Pentel Aquash as a starting tool and for painting outside (don't buy a cheap fake, they're terrible)

I'm very determined and driven by the desire to spite anyone who thinks I can't accomplish something, usually academically. I hate being in a situation where I'm proven wrong, because I cannot stand the idea of someone thinking I'm dumb or incapable (although I feel that way about myself privately all the time).
Hobbies: Recently, one of my biggest forms of stress relief have been annotating my books. Books I've read a hundred times or books that I'm reading for the first time (once I have a sense for whether I'm going to like them or not). I just love books that have been well loved and I can't help myself from expressing all my thoughts, theories, unnecessary comments, and meme references in the margins. I also love to watercolor, specifically faces. I've been singing since I was a kid, taking part in choir, musicals, and private lessons. Since hitting college, I haven't really performed, but music still means a lot to me and I try to take care of my voice and sing often.
Who I'd like to be shipped with: Kaz Brekker or Jesper Fahey! Which ever one better fits what you want to do story-wise is fine with me!

Kaz met Sam when he was fourteen. He had just broken his leg, and Per Haskell had dug up this young healer Grisha girl, no older than Kaz himself, to get his leg healed in return of a pouch of money.
The thing was, they hadn't sought her out sooner, it had been over a week already since he jumped down that roof. Kaz's bones had already started to mend back together and someone who hadn't known anything about medical attention had made the fracture even worse when they had tried to set the leg straight. So she told Haskell that there wasn't really anything she could do anymore apart from preventing a possible infection. Haskell hadn't been happy and threatened to leave her unpaid unless she finds a way to knit the bones back together, which had infuriated the girl, but she had to do her best. She tried to adjust the bone alignment as much as she could at that point but ultimately she had to settle for an imperfect resolution. The boy would be left with a limp. But at least his leg hurt slightly less when she finished her work, now he could sleep without waking up every hour to the pain.
Haskell still wouldn't agree to pay Sam, because according to him, they had agreed on her healing Kaz completely, which she failed doing. But he offered her a deal.
"We could have use for a healer. If you'll work for the Dregs for, say, a few months, you'll get your money," he proposed.
"A few months? For just a hundred and fifty kruge? Are you kidding me?" Sam scoffed, crossing her arms across her chest.
"It also caters meals, and a place to sleep. So yes, a hundred and fifty kruge for a few months."
She took in a deep sigh. "Three hundred."
"One eighty."
Sam thought about it for a moment. She desperately needed money to find a place to stay and to eat - and she had to start somewhere. A young girl like her wasn't picked out as the first one when it came to healing jobs, and she'd starve soon if she didn't get any money from anywhere. "You'd better not scam me or I swear..." she trailed off threateningly before going silent again. Then after a couple of minutes more, she sighed and shook her head.
"Two hundred," she finally said reluctantly.
Haskell smirked victoriously, offering Sam his hand. And so, she became a healer for the Dregs. Not for just a few months, permanently. It was Kaz who proposed to Haskell to hire her properly, saying they'd have use for her skills in the future too.
Sam had become friends with Kaz. Or rather, she had started to consider him a friend. And maybe something more was brewing under her hazel eyes as she looked at Kaz, a little bit more concern when he came to her with a stab wound than what she had with her other friends, and it didn't take long before her friends started teasing her about it. Especially when Jesper came along, he declared to recognize someone having a crush anywhere.
She wasn't sure how Kaz felt about her though. The boy was a complicated case, their whole relationship was complicated. Other days, Sam was sure she just saw him blush and hold back a smile at something she said to him and the next, he shot a glare at her if she complimented him. Maybe she was just imagining things, daydreaming invading reality.
Sam gave Kaz one of her watercolor paintings as a gift on his every birthday, and he bought her new colors and brushes in return. Sometimes, a book appeared on her night table out of nowhere while she was showering, and the only person she had told about wanting to read that book had been Kaz. But he never admitted it - didn't deny it either though. But their friendship seemed to grow every month - he even told her about Jordie.
As years went on, Kaz took Per Haskell's place as the leader of the Dregs. And suddenly, his relationship with Sam took a big leap of distance. She wasn't sure what was wrong between them but it seemed like he had no interest to spend time with Sam now when he was the leader and talked to her only about work matters. It frustrated her, and Sam wished he'd just tell her what was wrong. Had she done something? Pushed him too far without noticing? Or did he value his leadership more than their friendship now? Whatever it was, she couldn't understand why her best friend wouldn't see her anymore or talk to her unless there were business matters at hand.
There was something she didn't know though - the reason Kaz was distancing himself from Sam was exactly because he was a leader now. And if his enemies ever found out that Sam held Kaz's heart in her hands, he could lose her. And that would break him - Sam was his weakness, and he shouldn't have weaknesses. But he couldn't kick Sam out either, he would basically kick her straight to her grave if he did that.
Jesper and Inej both noticed what was up with them, and after weeks of him pretending not listening, he went up to Sam's door, telling her he wanted to speak to her.
She let him in, and they just stood there for a moment. Kaz was trying to form his thoughts into words and force them out while Sam hugged herself.
"I'm scared of you getting hurt." Kaz muttered finally, his voice hoarse. He squeezed his cane and continued, "if any of the rivaling gangs gets to know how valuable you are, they're going to kidnap you." And if they find out how much you mean to me.
The girl frowned, plopping down to sit on her bed. For a moment, Kaz was taken back to the first night of her trying to heal his leg.
"I don't like to be touched," he had told her, and Sam had offered him a reassuring smile.
"I'll try to be quick."
And then she had talked with him about anything and everything, tried to distract him from her slight brushes against his leg as he tried to inspect the bone fracture properly.
Then Haskell had told Sam that she has to get Kaz walking properly within a few days as that was what was agreed on. Kaz remembered staring at the ceiling that night as Sam had applied some numbing cream on his leg, and he had just bit on his lip hard enough to draw blood, trying to hide his panic attack from her. Water, bodies, rot, Jordie dragging him under. All those images flashed through his head. Sam seemed to notice something wrong, and paused and was about to ask something, but Kaz turned to his side and vomited on the floor before she could. After, she didn't ask questions about it, which had made Kaz grateful. Most of the time, people would try to draw out an answer to why did he become so pale or angry at someone who was just ruffling his hair. But she hadn't asked anything, she even helped him to clean up.
That night alone had made Kaz to begin falling for her, he had later realised. The first person who actually cared of their patient and not "just" do the job. Sam had listened to him when he told her that he doesn't like touch, and had cared enough to stop when she had seen Kaz turning pale.
Sam's voice pierced his thoughts, "Kaz, are you saying that..." She left the rest of the sentence unsaid, but it hung in the air anyway. Kaz knew what she was going to say, and he nodded slowly.
She sighed softly, closing her eyes and Kaz saw a smile spreading on her face as she turned her face towards her lap. Kaz took it as a good sign, slowly sitting beside her on the bed.
"Inej was right," she mumbled and chuckled. Kaz frowned, but she didn't continue from that. Instead, she smiled at Kaz, inching her hand closer to his gloved one, but not touching. Kaz looked at their hands for a moment, and then very carefully, linked their pinkies. They both blushed at the contact and Kaz felt like a lovesick teenager, which he actually was right now, but he wouldn't admit that.
Maybe they could get their relationship to work, maybe he would be able to protect her. There were risks, but if they both were willing to face them... he'd give everything he had to keep her safe and happy.

This Ruzader idea popped in my head on one of my multiple bus misfortunes of my trip. It's been a long time since I actually sketched a thing instead of just slapping colors and marks on paper. I forgot how hard sketching is...
The main inspiration for the form was a combination of the Coast Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma coronatum), desert reptiles in general, geckos/salamanders/other reptiles that lose and regenerate their tails, the Iguana Parrot from Avatar, and the Izuchi monsters in Monster Hunter Rise. For the colors I tried to stay in similar families to Ruze's hair colors, crimson, and what wouldn't be completely out of place in the environment of the Badlands.
I tried to stay away from overly dinosaur-like features (because I assume Jurard's going with that theme for the Sorawrity (or however the fuck you spell that)) as well as steering away from axolotl features because of the Axelotls. I didn't add it but I also imagine each Ruzader wearing their own unique mask and scale coloring, similar to how the Koipanions are all different colored and have different hats sometimes (sans Puniko).
It's far far too late right now to add what I hand wrote in the pic but I might come back to this in a few days to type it out here since idk if my handwriting is easy to read for those who have English as a second language and rarely see native handwriting in the wild.
Below the cut I'll post some progress pics from when I was inking and painting the colors, as well as a pre-colored version. Also if anyone is better at art, feel free to recreate this concept to look more badass-cute like I initially intended but failed to fully execute on. Just like don't be a dick and credit the idea at least.

This was about the point when my wrist started hurting from dotting the watercolors so precisely and I regretted every painting decision I made here. But I'm still not confident enough in my control over watercolors (especially in this definitely-not-watercolor-paper sketch book) to just wash and glaze the colors.

Kuretake Gansai Tambi gouache-ish watercolors 12 color set 2 (they're kind of in-between gouache and watercolors idk they're Kuretakes, if you're familiar you're familiar). I used the colors neutral beige (11), rose beige (12), indian red (71), maroon (72), and gray (21).

George Washington
George Washington is a tiger. He is small, but his arms are like those slap bracelets so you can wear him on your wrist (or let him hang on the side of shelf like I do).
So I got Georgy-Boy for easter 2020. i asked my friends for name ideas. They sent me stuff like 'Stripes'. I went offline for a few minutes and when I came back online I told my friends his name was George Washington.

Lucifer is a small panda pillow pet. Very easy to travel with bc he fits in most backpacks.
My mom told me she wanted me to have a stuffed animal with a biblical name, i picked him up, looked her in the eye and said "His name is Lucifer." My mom tried to protest. "You said a biblical name, Mom. Lucifer is in the bible."

Pao(???)
Pao is a panda. They are also a phone holder thingy. Like it'll hold your phone if you're watching movies or whatever.
Like 5-ish years old. Got them from a friend. They have a tag with their name on it, but I read it once and then just called them "the panda" for some reason instead of their actual name and now the tag is too faded to read the name, but i am 38% sure it says Pao or something close to that.

Tsuki
Tsuki is a dinosaur. Tsuki is a sparkly dino. He's green rn, but if you brush your hand over him, the sparkles turn over and he becomes orange. I like green tho bc his tummy and the bottom of his feet are orange and so are his eyes.

Hinata
Hinata is a narwhal. A bright orange narwhal. Infact he is the same color as Tenma's hair.
Named after Hinata Shoyo (Haikyuu) [bc its the same color as his hair. there is a theme with this narwhal and the anime boys i associate with them]
Yuki
Steve
Steve is a regular teddy bear, except he has a shirt that has pikachu on it. (the shirt was originally Tsuki's bc i got tsuki at a friends build a bear bday party, but it fits Steve better)
I just think Yuki would try new designs/color schemes/styles by making clothes for Steve to see how they look.
I got Steve from a claw machine (my bf at time won him for me just before we watched Endgame together.)

Muku
Eeyore
Muku most definitely loves the Winnie the Pooh movies and I will fite for this hc. He gets my Eeyore. You know how Eeyore's tail is always going missing or falling off??? Eeyore's tail comes off (velcro) but its attached to his actual body with a string so it cant be misplaced.
Eeyore has a patch that says "official disney store" but i got him for $3 at a thrift store.
Misumi
Sherlock
Sherlock is a polar bear. Sherlock is very huggable. He makes Misumi feel safe. He has a hat and scarf (that don't come off. they are sewn on him)
the hat has a pom pom on top and the scarf has a pom pom on each end. the hat and scarf and the bottom of his feet have a blue/white plaid pattern.
Kazunari
Victor
Victor is a puppy and the first big stuffed animal of mine on the list! He's all tan and abt maybe 3-4 ft long. Victor lays pretty flat so he's comfy to lay/sit on. I think Kazu would like sitting or laying on him when drawing. Probably has him on his bed so he's like a giant pillow.
Victor is from Toys R Us. I got him last August-ish from my Aunt and Uncle who found him at a thrift store and thought I'd like him.

Kumon
PJ
PJ is a small white tiger. He is also a ball. He can fit in one hand. When Kumon is thinking or stressed or bored (etc) he just lays on his back and tosses PJ up into the air.
When Kumon is laying on the floor tossing PJ, Misumi sits on the bed closest to where PJ is and tries to grab him (but only if Kumon is in a good mood and okay with it) It's a fun little game they made up they like to play.

Sammy
Sammy is another one of my large stuffed animals. He is also a puppy, but unlike Victor he is sitting instead of laying. He's abt 2-3 ft tall. His fur is the same color as Banri's hair. Great to squeeze at anytime, but very therapeutic when you're in a bad mood. Has a heart on his ear.
i got him abt 7 years ago. I had just finished spn season 2 and was upset abt the finale and had no way to start season 3.

Tiggs
Tiggs is a beanie baby tiger. Tiggs is a little larger than PJ (and not a ball). He's a regular orange tiger instead of a white tiger like PJ. He'd buy Kumon PJ so they could have matching stuffed animals. Small and very comforting to just hold/hug.
Omi
Benedict (Ben)
Benedict, also known as Ben, is a small koala. Just a little bigger than Tiggs. He has a heart on one of his feet (i think the right one). very soft. very fluffy.

Taichi
Dean
Dean is my largest stuffed animal. He is a dark brown teddy bear that's abt 4-ish ft tall. He can be put in a corner and used as like a bean bag chair, or he can lay down flat and be a good pillow like Victor can.
It's very fun to just wrap around him and squeeze as tight as you can. Especially in when your in a bad mood. Very comforting to cry into.
I got him a couple years ago at a thrift store.

Lev
Lev is a lion abt the size of a regular teddy bear (maybe slightly larger). I got him a thrift store so he's slightly worn out from age. He's mostly a pastel dark yellow-ish tan and his mane is dark brown. very huggable.
He's the stuffed animal I sleep with. Smells nice all the time, like the fabric softener.
Named after Lev Haiba (Haikyuu)
Sakoda
Emotional Support Iron Man
So Iron Man is small and he sparkles. He will hurt you/someone if thrown hard enough. Sakoda likes heroes bc they remind him of Sakyo they look cool. I'd hc that he got Iron Man from Sakyo when he was younger and its one of his most valued possessions and goes everywhere with him (or stays with Azamo or Sakyo at the dorm. Maybe Izumi or a couple others are on the list of who can watch over Iron Man.) Very protective of it.
Got the emotional support part of his name from a friend.
She saw Eddie Redmayne on a movie cover (think it was The Danish Girl) and started freaking out bc she loved him. I handed her the Iron Man and the next day she thanked me and said he was an Emotional Support Iron Man and the name stayed.
Azami
[Emotional Support] Spooder-Mon
Sakoda knew Azami as a kid. He most definitely got him the Spider-Man so they could have matching plushies.
Spider-Man is square and has little blob hands doing the web thingy. The tag said travel pillow, but he probably just chills by Azami's bed. When needed, Iron Man will be placed next to him if Sakoda can't take Iron Man with him.
I brought him to school one day and we had a bio test and all the people sitting around me passed him around and gave him a pat for good luck. We all got good grades and then he was dubbed as Emotional Support Spooder-Mon, but the Emotional Support title isnt part of his name (unlike the Iron Man).

Phil
Phil is a zebra. He is a pillow pet zebra. Like Lucifer, Phil is also easy travel size. The bottom half of Phil is pink, so I refer to him as my pink zebra.
I just think it'd be cute to have Tsumugi with a pillow pet ok. I also thought he'd probably have has Phil for many years (since he was a kid) and Tasuku most definitely brings up things from when they were kids and shit.

Cap
Cap is a husky. He was won from a claw machine with Steve.
There's just something abt the grey and white that gave me Tasuku vibes. Also, Cap's eyes are abt the same shade of blue as Tsumugi's and Tasuku knows this bc they are in love. Very squishy when hugged and with the way he sits, you could make it look like he's guarding something.

Homare
Ushijima (Ushi)
Ushijima, also called Ushi, is the last of my giant stuffed animals. He is abt 2-3 ft tall (like Sammy) and has a tail abt the same length.
Ushi is a raccoon thats mostly hot pink. Ushi's eyes are also pink and just abt the same shade as Homare's hair, although Ushi's fur is brighter by a few shades.
Ushi hurts when thrown/swung hard enough. Very fun to hug bc he's filled with beans (like beanie babies) so unlike all my other giant animals, he doesn't have to be fixed/adjusted after everytime you squeeze him. The tail has cotton tho and makes a good pillow.
Homare would definitely just see a 3 ft tall hot pink raccoon and claim it with no explanation.

Hisoka
Vladmir Dracula the 3rd (Vlad, Drac)
Vladmir Dracula the 3rd, who has many other names but usually goes by Vlad or Drac, is a vampire (surprise).
Vlad is a squishmallow thingy, and their tags say something abt them being able to be used as pillows, and thats why Hisoka gets Vlad.
Vlad is triangular in shape, with triangle ears, and triangle fangs, so I thought abt Misumi, but i figured Hisoka bc it's a pillow.
He's like the perfect travel size and he has a cape and a bowtie.
Named after Vlad the Impaler, the real life inspiration behind Dracula (my brother thought he was named after Vladmir Putin and I wanted to punch him for that but I was too busy laughing.)
Also named after Dracula, who was a vampire.
Idk where 'the 3rd' came from, but it's part of his name for forever.
Azuma
Sebastian
Sebastian is a dinosaur thats blue with a white tummy.
He's also a squishmallow, but he's bigger than Vlad by abt 2× as wide, so he'd be harder to carry around, which is why Hisoka got Vlad instead. Being a squishmallow means he looks more blob than dinosaur and i love it.
His tag said his name was Dominic or something, but I named him Sebastian before I actually checked the tag, so he's Sebastian.

Guy
Moriarty
Moriarty is my other polar bear. I got him with Sherlock and named him Moriarty bc Moriarty is Sherlock's nemesis.
He's just a plain white bear thats very huggable and adorable. I usually have a bowtie on him bc it makes him look fancy.
Guy would like him bc he's plain white and very fluffy.

So, midterms happened and I abandoned this blog for a while. But now I’m back, and I come bearing mice.

I’ve been really struggling with finding subjects I like to draw. I’m happy to work on skeleton studies until Judgment Day to better understand anatomy, but I know I need to balance “homework” art with “for fun” art, or else risk losing motivation for learning to draw -- and I’m so used to writing fiction at this point that no subject really appeals to me artistically unless it’s got 5,000+ words of story attached (or at least some narrative/character ideas, yanno -- something for my brain to pick at). The obvious solution is to draw concept art and characters from my written stories, but I feel really intimidated by that because I’m such a beginner artist that nothing I create now will do justice to the vision I have in my head.
I need art OCs and concepts – things that I will only draw art of, and have never written a story about. Stuff that doesn’t have to match a previously established, written story, and that I can change as I learn more and my skills improve.
I ended up drawing a bunch of mice.
This was initially just a whim. Human anatomy requires a lot of skill to pull off, especially faces and hands, but mice felt more beginner-friendly to me. Admittedly, I was going for a more cartoony style as opposed to photorealism, so if you’re looking at this from a realism perspective then these are pretty poor mice. However, I don’t feel ashamed of them, which I am taking as a good sign.

I kept drawing one mouse over and over. I ended up calling him Leo just because it was funny – “leo” refers to lions, but here Leo is just a little mouse. But of course, giving him a name (and a gender, incidentally) is the start of a story. Via a flight of fancy, I got it into my head that I wanted to do a painting of Leo trying to catch a big snowflake. I made some thumbnails of what I wanted the scene to look like, and then cut out a roughly 7 inch x 7 inch piece of watercolor paper from a big sheet that I had under my bed, sketched the scene in pencil, and then finished with watercolor pencils (and a white gel pen for the snowflakes). The process probably took 2.5 to 3 hours.

So, now the lore is that Leo is a mouse living in a little house in an old tree at the edge of the woods, and he wears a red scarf. I did not like this painting. It seemed over-saturated and the colors didn’t quite work the way I wanted them to. I ended up watching a tutorial on color theory, and decided to redo the painting using my newfound knowledge of color schemes. I used this color palette tool to get an idea of what kinds of colors would look good together, and settled on a complementary scheme with bluish green and brownish red.
And then, everything went wrong.
I tried to redo the painting, still working traditionally. I rushed the sketch because I was so eager to get right into working with color. This time, to avoid over-saturation, I used watercolors out of a pan rather than in pencil form. Mixing the colors in the lid of the pan took a really long time because I was so picky about shades, and because I continued rushing I didn’t allow the layers enough time to dry. Leo’s scarf (now green instead of red) bled into his russet fur, and the mailbox was the wrong shape, and I tried to erase a pencil line and created a dark blotch over an area that was supposed to be white with snow – and then I gave up.

I had downloaded Krita, a piece of digital drawing/painting software, a while ago, but hadn’t had any success using it because my desk isn’t big enough to accommodate both a laptop and my small tablet. Using my lap to hold the tablet was an exercise in frustration, and I knew so little about how digital art works that I just felt really overwhelmed and lost whenever I opened the program.
However, Krita (like most digital art software) has an undo button that I find very alluring, so I decided to try it again, now on a shiny new desk from Ikea that is actually big enough to support tablet and laptop together. I think just the space on the desk really made all the difference, but also I was determined to get this artwork of a mouse to a place where I felt satisfied with it.
I spent a solid 5 hours working on what ended up being a very simple colored drawing of a mouse catching a snowflake outside his little house. I barely blended anything at all, and there’s no light source that required me to shade anything – it’s just flat color. However, I really like these colors, and I think I did well (for an absolute beginner). I want to go back and add textures/shading to give an impression of depth, but I'm not sure how.

Leo – like all of my figures – feels really stiff, so I also want to work on gestures/studies of mice doing things. And, thanks to the popularity of mice as lab animals and pets, there are way more reference photos of mice than I expected! Most refs depict the house mouse, Mus musculus, but I did find the work of a wildlife photographer named Dean Mason who spent 15 years photographing harvest mice (micromys minutus).
Unfortunately, all of the prior artwork in this post I had drawn almost purely from imagination, and I think it shows. I studied two mice from photos in pencil, then erased the lines until they were barely visible and tried to do the fur texture in ink (with a dip pen, so there is some unevenness when the pen was extra inky).

Left is my first attempt doing the fur texture. I was more cautious with layering pen strokes, so you can see the lines of strokes fairly evenly. Right is my 2nd attempt, where I was bolder with the pen. I like these mice more than the one I created in the digital painting; these ones (especially the right) feel more Beatrix Potter-ish, which is a vibe I like.
Do I want to go back and fix the anatomy in my digital art of Leo? Yes. I also want to take another stab at doing this piece traditionally, but this time, I'd go monochrome and try to do everything in brown. However, part of me is exhausted from drawing ten million snowflakes and does not want to relive that experience with a gel pen -- I've already done it once with a tablet pen, and that was enough.
I have a hazy, far-off goal of creating a comic of Leo having adventures with another mousy friend, but that’s so far in the future that it’s not worth spending time considering right now. In the nearer future, however, Leo’s friend might become a reality – I know he’s an albino mouse (name TBD) who either escaped from a drug-testing facility (I loved The Secret of NIMH movie as a kid) or else is a pet who was dumped into the wild by a human owner who no longer wanted him. Leo is outgoing and adventurous, and this friend is shy and cautious.

Sparkle By the Sea
Pardon me as I just barely squeeze a MerMay piece of art in. I'll be honest with you guys, I've been pretty lacking in artistic motivation since NaPoWriMo ended. Although if you've noticed my lack of uploads, you probably could've already guessed that.  This isn't abnormal for the aftermath of a month-long challenge for me, especially with a brand-new video game calling my name at every moment of the day, but even so I feel like this particular motivation drought was a bit different. Part of it definitely had to do with the changes to DeviantArt that I'm sure I don't need to remind everyone of, but that's been more of me dreading seeing what the state of the community is than anything else. (However, I have noticed I'm not a fan of the new tag system over the old category one, as confusing as the category system could be sometimes.) Rather, I think this lake of motivation has more to do with the fact that being largely absent from all social media during NaPo reminded me...well, that I hate social media. This is really a bigger discussion for a journal or something, but suffice to say it did not feel good to realize just how many literal hours I had previously been spending trying to desperately to scrape up just a little bit of support on other social media platforms (namely Twitter), versus the more natural growth I see here on dA that also feels a lot more genuine and less forced/obligatory. I can't really explain it, but that reminder/realization really helped my brain slip back into a place where I felt like creating again. And with that, I'll transition into talking about the art and save the social media talk for, as I said, a journal or something later on. Naturally, I've been seeing a lot of mermaid art this month and every year I feel the urge to get in on the fun, though I know better than to try actually doing the MerMay Challenge (especially not this year after having just done NaPo), so I usually either do a one-off drawing or if I'm too busy with other projects I just skip it. But I was starting to feel that need to make art in my brain again and I've had a specific set of stickers from the dollar store sitting in my stash for quite a while now that more or less sealed the deal for me. How do these stickers fit into the mix? Well, I originally fell in love with/picked them up because they are mermaid-themed and absolutely adorable--See for yourself! And I thought they would make for nice decals in a book project since they're wall stickers and therefore repositionable with minimal adhesive-yuck. And at first, I thought maybe I'd end up making them into said hypothetical book project in time for MerMay...except that felt a little cheap in combination with my lack of uploads. Did I really want to come back with a book project featuring mermaids I didn't even draw? And for MerMay of all things? So I sat on the idea and left the stickers out where I could see them, and eventually I sat down and took a closer look at them. The art style, upon further inspection, actually didn't look like it would be too far outside my usual art-making realms...Most of the coloring looks a lot like watercolor, except for the skin which I thought was flat and smooth like alcohol marker and the glitter accents which from my perspective pretty much had to be digital, but could potentially be replicated with glittery/metallic supplies... And that was the moment the idea hatched.  I decided I'd try drawing a mermaid myself in the same style. This would work for MerMay, have something to do with the stickers, and based on my plans would work well for me as a mixed-media project, which as I'm sure I've said before is where I think my artistic talent shines best. I thought the scariest part was going to be replicating the looser and less strict line style, and to a point it was, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I find it's usually kind of tricky to explain this, but really what this part of the process boils down to for me (if I'm replicating an existing style and not using my own), is really just studying the original artwork(s) and looking for patterns, then trying to stick to those patterns. For example, the style here features fairly large & rounded faces, and the hands are more like hand-shaped mittens (which was great news by the way because hands are always a pain in the butt for me), so I did my best to emulate those features. As per usual, I did start with a sketch, but I tried to keep it looser than usual, and then when I did the inking I started with my 0.2 Micron, again trying to keep things loose and no be too fussy if I could help it. Then I went back with a brush tip liner from Prismacolor to get more natural variation in the lines and to force myself to not have quite so much control over the line weight. I was also very careful with my choice of liners because I knew pretty much everything except the skin was going to see a lot of watercolors, which meant the lines had to be waterproof. And of course, I went with watercolor paper (my nice 100% cotton stuff this time) to make sure I didn't have any issues with blending or layering. Now, at this stage, I didn't know what I was going to do for the background, though I was leaning towards the idea of making one separately and placing the mermaid on top afterward, as sort of a nod to the original mermaids being stickers. But I wasn't totally sure yet. What I was sure of was how scared I was to just dive into coloring. The sketching and inking and gone so well I was thinking I was in for a rude awakening at any moment. So, just in case, I scanned my uncolored lines as a fall-back if I royally screwed up. With my paranoid mind set at ease (for the most part), I could begin with color application. I started with the skin since it was the easiest; Just one good layer of alcohol marker, leaving a little white space here and there like the artwork I was emulating. Although 1. The marker color turned out a bit darker than I was expecting and later blended too well with her tail, so I had to lighten it in Photoshop, and 2. because watercolor paper really soaks up the ink, I ended up with less white space than I thought I would. But beyond that, this step went off without a hitch. So then came the second-scariest part: The watercolor. I used a mixture of my Master's Touch watercolors and Mermaid Markers (yes, that was a very conscious supply choice ) and tried to take my time and be mindful of the color balance I was looking for. I'd decided ahead of time that I wanted to try and stick with a soft-ish palette like the original art, but I still wanted my choices to be different. Since yellow/gold is featured in the original but not used for a tail color, that's what I went with, and I opted for the blue-y-purple hair since a soft blue and purple are also prominent in the original and based on color-theory would be a nice contrast to the gold-orange tail. Though I did also try to get some pink in both the tail and the hair for a bit of unity and calling back to the pink in the original art. The trickiest part with the coloring was actually the tiny lips and blush spots. I ended up using a fluorescent pink for that turned out as more of a red originally and had to be touched-up via Photoshop because of that and also because of the lightening I did to the skin. It's more that it was a bit of a challenge to get the shapes of these much smaller areas right and in the correct place, since I had to use very minimal pencil markings, lest I end up with nasty graphite marks mixed into the paint. Getting the hair to be dark enough without being extreme compared to the rest of the drawing was also a great test of patience, but it ultimately worked out, I think. I also had a hard time deciding what color the piece of coral in her hair should be, which is why it ended up as this vague dusky-orange color. And I got more pink on the sand dollar next to it than I intended, but neither of those things is a huge deal. While I waited for all that to dry though, I had to decide how I was going to go about tackling all that extreme sparkle the original art had. I could have just added it in digitally and not even attempted it traditionally, but everything else had gone so smoothly that I decided to push my luck this time. Originally, I started with just glittery gel pens, but I found pretty quickly that they were sinking back into the colors underneath them too much and thus just weren't doing what I wanted. I wanted high-impact sparkle. After some brief consideration, I turned to the metallic watercolor sets I have made by Art Philosophy, which are very high-impact metallic and pretty opaque, which would work well over my failed gel pen and would work wonders for the areas where I wanted that high-impact over an opposing color. (I.E. Where I wanted the blue sparkle over a very orange-yellow area, which would normally make brown mud if the color on top wasn't opaque.) The funny part about that is that I originally used a different shade of purple and gold for those areas of sparkle that I ended up completely covering with different shades (the purple needed to be lighter and the gold needed to be darker/more gold and less yellow). And her eye shadow cover saw all three colors before I settled; The purple just seemed wrong, and the gold blended too well with her skin. I thought the blue wouldn't work so close to her blue hair, but it actually ended up looking the best out of the three. Although, I do have to make a full disclosure that the high-impact sparkle you see here is in fact where I went in and re-did it digitally once I scanned the artwork in. Unfortunately, glitter and metallic supplies just don't scan very well and usually end up looking too dark, dull, or flat by comparison. The metallic paints work just fine in person since you can move the art and see how they reflect the light, but it just doesn't work in a still image that's been captured by having a bright light uniformly shined over it. Still, re-tooling the sparkle digitally ended up being an interesting challenge, especially since it's been a fairly long time since I was messing with digital textures like this. Also worth noting is that I had to re-paint some of the metallic areas because they weirdly lifted off onto the plastic cover I used to protect the art when I pressed it onto the background to make the glue stick. I'm not sure if it's because those were the extra-layered areas and they hadn't fully dried all the way down to the paper, or if that particularly plastic just picks up this metallic paint really easily or what. And speaking of that background... Like I said earlier, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do for a background for a while, but after reviewing my mermaid-centric Pinterest board I decided a simple rock seat and something to vaguely suggest the ocean/water without getting too detailed would suffice just fine. Based on that, I felt like using gouache would work nicely (and I just really felt like using the gouache since I don't find a lot of opportunities to use it) and that a color scheme that flipped her hair and tail colors would be best for the effect I wanted. I've found I really like the Strathmore 400 series mixed media paper for gouache because of how smooth it is, so I cut a piece down to size and got busy. For the most part, I just kind of went in with the colors doing whatever felt right, and trying to use some gouache I'd already mixed from past projects (since gouache can be reactivated and I've found this kind, in particular, seems to reactivate really nicely) either on their own or to mix the colors I felt like I needed. And I also tried to do a lot of blending straight on the paper to get more variations in color and make things a bit more lively. Oddly enough, this ended up being a good example of gouache's covering power because I accidentally started applying the colors upside down--using more greens and blues on top and more pinky-purple on the bottom--and not only had to flip the paper around but also had to do a fair amount of covering the colors I'd already put down with colors you don't really want to mix with them because they don't make very pretty results.  But it worked out just fine, so yay! I also added some clouds for a little extra ambiance, which I think looks quite nice. Believe it or not, the most difficult thing about the background was the rocks. I spent far longer than I care to admit (or bothered to document, for that matter) trying and in many ways failing to mix the proper shades of gray I wanted, and the end result didn't turn out quite as clean and graphic as I had hoped, but by the time I put the mermaid on top, you really can't tell because you can only see a fraction of what's actually there.  And I mean, the end result isn't terrible, it's just not quite what I was picturing in my mind's eye is all. Personally, I know it's kind of an odd choice, but I really like how there's no defining line between the water and the sky, and yet you still get a clear idea that they're separate and the rocks aren't just floating in space. I'm not sure how, but I think I'd like to work with this kind of ambiguity more often. It's like a step between abstract and more structured art. Anyway. With the background done, the next step was to attach the mermaid, which I felt like doing in a more 3D and less flat manner, so I chopped up a cardboard box that previously held a chocolate bunny I had on hand and glued some pieces together to boost the mermaid up a bit. This where those deep shadows between her and the background are coming from.   Here I feel the need to insert a comment about how difficult it was to get my tacky glue to dispense the glue for me, though there's a chance this is because I need to poke the opening in the tip to be a bit wider. (You have to poke it open yourself and I always felt like I never did get it open quite enough...unless you like strenuous hand exercises...) Of course, once all the above was done then I had to scan the art in, which I was admittedly a bit nervous about after the incident with the plastic cover peeling off the metallic paint (though fortunately, the scanner glass didn't have the same effect), and then all that was left wad the digital retouches. Overall, I'm really happy with how this turned out. It doesn't blend in as well as I originally wanted it to with the original art, but in the end, that doesn't really bother me. It's just a nice piece of art on its own that is also unique from what I normally do...except it's still got a lot of similar elements to how I normally make art. It feels a lot like the days when all I made was fanart. The key difference here is that I know myself better as an artist now and thus can use that knowledge to my advantage. I can't promise this a return to regular posting for me, though I do hope it's a gateway to me posting more frequently at least, but I can say I do intend on getting back to working on art more often and therefore being more present online again. Tips and Tricks: Watercolors Edition.
It always surprises me that more current cartoonists don’t use watercolors. I know that Will McPhail and Carolita Johnson use them, but watercolors haven’t really popped up much in the dozens upon dozens of interviews I’ve conducted over the past several years. Of course they show up more in interviews I’ve done with cover illustrators (Barry Blitt, John Cuneo, etc.), but I think a lot more cartoonists would find a whole world of opportunities in watercolor, if they were to experiment with them a bit. I’ve been painting a lot of watercolor pet portraits recently, and thinking of (and using!) some tips and tricks that I have found useful over the years, but that haven’t come up in any of the interviews that I’ve conducted on this blog, so I thought I would take the time to share them!

-Watercolor has a similar look to ink wash, but is less permanent. You put down a layer of ink wash and you’re stuck with it. But if you use watercolor, you can take a wet rag and practically erase it! Plus, if you don’t feel confident doing linework with a brush, you can still use ink or a pen for that. Look at this landscape that I did a few years back. The shadowy sand was done by putting down opaque watercolor, letting it dry, and then scrubbing most of it away!

-If you have discovered the joys of lifting up watercolor mistakes, but have gone about it a bit over zealously, and caused your paper to pill up (but haven’t fully dug a hole through the fibers), I have discovered that the Cliceraser, a Japanese tool that Roz Chast recommended in her Case as an ink eraser, is your savior. If your paper is still wet, blast it with a hairdryer until it’s fully dry, and then gently sand off any errant paper fiber until it’s smooth enough to paint on again. Now, this would not work on printer paper (you shouldn’t be using watercolor on there anyways—I generally work on heavy cotton watercolor block), but this has helped me on more occasions than I care to admit. It is basically a grainy eraser. I haven’t tried using sandpaper, but I think the Cliceraser is more gentle, and would allow for more precision.

-Frank Cotham uses water-soluble crayons, which have a very unique look to them, but I’ve discovered that they can sometimes cause an unwanted glow in photographs. Say you spent ages painting a landscape, and thought it would be a great idea to use water-soluble  crayons to paint the leaves. Everything looks uniform and tied together, but when you try to capture an image for your portfolio, you discover that your subtle fall foliage is garishly glaring. Devastation. Use water-soluble crayons with caution, especially when you're doing mixed media, and perhaps take photos of your work as you go along, to make sure that what you see through the camera matches what you see in front of you (or at least to ensure that you won’t be faced with any horrifying realizations at the last second).
-Speaking of water solubility, a very versatile tool that hasn’t been mentioned in any Case interview is one of my favorites, and one that I think would make a lot of cartoonists’ lives a lot easier: watercolor pencils. They blend really well with regular watercolor paint, and work great for detail work, for building up an area quickly, and for outlines (though I sometimes like to have graphite peeking through in a painting, using it for initial sketches can be helpful, especially when using light tones, because you can seamlessly blend your lines into your painting).
A lot of cartoonists will use gouache straight out of the tube for highlights, but that can require extreme precision, and sometimes, watercolor paper will eat up the paint! However, if you use a very sharp white watercolor pencil instead, the highlights won’t get absorbed. If you’re feeling fancy (or using grainy paper), you can trace over the watercolor pencil with white gouache.

Watercolor pencils can also be used for building up an area quickly. I find that if I’m using a thick cotton paper, it can be hard to get colors dark enough, so sometimes I’ll just lay down some watercolor pencil in whatever color is best suited for the task at hand, and then go over that with watercolor paint, which can lead to some interesting textures. I do that often with rocks.

-My rock painting leads me to my next tip, which is if you struggle with drawing something, that’s all the more reason to draw it. I used to struggle with painting rocks, so I sat down and said, “I’m going to paint a very rock-heavy painting,” (well, the painting itself is very light). Did I regret this decision greatly while painting all of those rocks? Yes! But I am now able to paint rocks fairly easily, so it ended up being worth the agony. This applies to many things in life besides watercolors, of course!
-Another tip (which also applies to the above rock painting) is to use the paint’s texture to your advantage. There are some really interesting paints with high levels of mineral separation, that can create beautiful grainy effects. You can do a light wash of a grainy paint over a flat wash of paint, and end up with a fascinating texture with minimal effort. This is an especially great technique for painting dirt.

-Try to use shadows effectively rather than accurately. With portraiture, as with cartooning, you are telling a story. Such as writers use various devices (metaphors, etc.) to tell their tales, we do the same thing with how we use tones. If I’m painting a dog, I want all of the information in the image to go towards showing the dog. Part of this can be using background tones. In my average pet painting, I’m not going to try to make a meticulously true to life shadow, but rather use shading to either convey space or make the dog stand out from the background. If I am painting a pet with light fur, I am generally going to paint a more expressive background in darker tones that contrast with their fur. If I’m painting a chocolate lab, I will do a light shadow to convey that they are occupying space of some sort, but that won't cause them to blend into a dark background. I always want to make sure that the darkest (or sometimes lightest, if everything else is rather dark) color on the page is on the part of the painting that I want you to see first. Cartoonists do the same thing, but in a way that leads the viewer’s eye to the joke.
-If buying a whole set of watercolors is cost-prohibitive, I recommend buying a cheap set, and then buying a nicer tube here or there as you are able. That’s what I did. A lot of high quality companies also offer smaller sized tubes, that are often significantly cheaper than the large sizes with scary prices. Coupons are also your best friend. I’ve used a coupon on almost every single tube of paint I have ever bought. Plus if you work mostly in black and white, you only need two tubes!

Devlog #34 - Status Update, Character Design, and UI

Hello! It's time for another update on the development status of Brassica. It’s also our first actual devlog purely about Brassica!
After working on separate projects for a while, we are now in the process of getting back on track working on the same game again. Because of that we're happy to announce that the rest of Brassica's Act 2 will be released in March!
It grew a bit in size from what we originally planned but that just means more game for you~
The exact date will be announced when we can more clearly estimate how long the remaining tasks will take but we're in the process of finishing everything up so it shouldn't be too long.
As for Act 3, our current plan is to release it in April. From now on development should be a lot faster but because we mainly worked on it on the side until now, that is still only a rough estimate. We'll definitely keep you updated on any developments regarding the release dates though!
Well, and that's about it for the status update. Because it's been a while since our devlogs actually described much of our development process (and we haven't shared much about our thought processes behind Brassica), we decided to bring that back with today's devlog.
PECTIN will tell you a bit about Saffron and his design while eZombo describes the development of the UI. So without further ado, here we go:
Art - PECTIN
Saffron is the curious prince the player takes control of in Brassica. Before I began concepting him Felix and I defined his character. At this point we already knew he would be one of the princes Sappho tricks into going on the journey. (And would then fall in love with another prince because YaoiJam'18). We soon agreed on naming him Saffron. So I already associated the colours of the spice "saffron" with him here. We also wanted to make him a protagonist with his own personality. Thinking of the player who role-plays him we thought it would be cool to have his character split into three separate personalities he could have: - the cunning and a bit wild prince     -  the typical goody two-shoes type of hero     - and the soft boi who's overwhelmed by the whole predicament and really needs a hug Another external influence was, my intention  to try and fuse traditional things with modern sportswear. Brassica is a fairytale but it's told in a contemporary voice. That's where the idea came from. ...Okay. So I had his name, colours I could associate with him, the three archetypes and my goal to fuse sportswear with traditional clothing. Having all of these "pointers" I began looking for reference pictures. I browsed through online stores of popular sports brands to find things that would fit the character. Due to Saffron's character ranging from cute to rather untamed (in the sense that he would climb a tree without hesitation) I thought that wearing shorts would be most suitable and comfy. But for the top and the overall outfit I wanted to let myself get inspired by traditional elements. The name "Saffron" reminded me  of the spice and then its use in Indian culture. I never designed a character with Indian influences before and thought researching into that would be interesting. I found a lot of stuff I could translate into the design. Even the leggings Saffron wears were intially inspired by my findings about Indian culture. Here's a visual breakdown of what inspired what (excuse my srawly handwriting >-<):

During the process of drawing out his design, as I always do, I thought about how each component of the outfit would "flow". There're lot's of lines and intersections in his outfit that guide the eyes along the his body:

And here is our boy again as a sprite. Not much different right? Here I put one of his hands in his shorts' pocket, because I think it would suit someone who is either unsure and does that or feels liking hiding something.

That's it about Saffron! I could go on about his colours but I'll save that for when I explain the general artstyle of Brassica! :3
UI - eZombo
Because Brassica was planned as an entry for Yaoi Jam 2018, we thought about ways to keep the scope small. One idea we came up with was to reduce the size of the screen that shows backgrounds and characters so producing the art is a bit faster than filling a full HD 16:9 canvas. One inspiration for that was Sticky Zeitgeist by Porpentine & Rook but something like the Undertale console version where the graphics at the border of the screen change based on the in-game location was also something we considered.
When it came to actually planning the screen, Undertale's influence came through again, because the main area of the screen actually has an aspect ratio of 4:3. This obviously leaves a lot of unused screen space but one thing we knew we could definitely use to fill this was the text box. Having it separate from the main screen also made sure that it didn't overlap with the characters or backgrounds so the space that was reserved for that could be used to its full potential.
With two elements already on the screen, we still had the sides to fill with content. Just using graphics as borders definitely was an option but because Brassica's story plays out a bit like a road movie, we thought having a map of the game world would definitely add to the feeling of that. And to make the UI visually more balanced again, the last bit of free space was then filled with some information on the time of day and how many days were left for the quest of the princes which basically added all the important context for what is going on in the center of the screen.

Around that time, we also developed the idea of presenting the whole game screen like a paper or puppet theater. This seemed like a good way to bring all these different elements together while still supporting the colorful fantasy-ish look of the game art.
I did a quick sketch of how this could look, which turned the mock-up into this:

Aside from adding some more purely graphical elements, I adjusted the text box and the flag that showed the name of the character that is currently speaking. The map was graphical now instead of just a list (which would have given away future locations) and I was overall fairly happy with the direction the UI was going in. A few of the border elements overlapped with the main screen now but I tried to make sure it only happens in areas where we wouldn't put any focus.
After getting some feedback from PECTIN I then went on to work on the final lineart while also trying to simplify all the shapes. By then, the characters were also being concepted so instead of Luke I could put Ode into the mock-up (along with a reference for a possible background style).

As you can see, some unnecessary lines, elements, and text were removed to simplify the look of the UI and make sure that the important elements aren't overshadowed by anything else. Overall I tried to keep the lines clean without making them look overly sterile, so any round shapes are generally drawn freehand instead of using any vector shapes. Except for the compass, moon, and their enclosing arcs. Those just looked sloppy when they weren't exact. Not using fixed line widths was another way to make the lines more organic even when they were perfectly straight. The idea to use different colored flags for each character also came into play now, although Ode's color here is actually used by Hans now…

Colors were next on the agenda. First a basic pass, followed by some adjustments and line colors to make the lines fade more into the background. Having the concepts for the three princes was very helpful for this step because it was important that the UI colors fit into the overall color scheme while keeping the focus on the actual game art. That's why red is only used close to the center and for important UI elements (the current location on the map is also marked in red). The rest of the colors are rather muted and monochrome on purpose with only a little bit of gold to break it up.

Throughout the whole process my main references were old paper theaters but especially during the coloring process I deviated from these references in favor of using colors that would match with most backgrounds.

Once we were happy with the colors, I did a relatively quick shading pass, just adding shadows with a fairly abstract light source to keep most shadows parallel to the lines. I also added some subtle noise to make everything look a bit more organic.
For the most part it still looked too clean though, so PECTIN suggested overlaying the UI with some watercolor textures.

Which lead to this final mock-up and not only solved the problem but also gave the UI a more painterly look that didn't interfere as much with the general artstyle.
Well, but as always, there are still a few things that changed on the way into the engine.

The map was obviously added (which could probably fill a devlog by itself), the text on the side was changed to better reflect the current quest of the princes (although the other sign may or may not return in future acts...), I added a CTC icon and updated the quick menu (although I can't remember why "Load" was removed so maybe that will return again), but most importantly: The text box was reduced from three to two lines of text. This wasn't as much an active decision as it was caused by the fact that small line spacing in Ren'Py cuts of parts of some letters until all lines of text are displayed. There are some games that still do this but personally I don't really like how it looks while the text appears. Increasing the textbox would have caused a lot of work because I would have had to shift around more elements of the UI to keep a balanced layout so it was simply easier to remove a line of text and increase the line spacing.
This had a pretty strong effect on the writing because sentences have to be fairly short now or if that doesn't work, broken up into multiple lines. Even if it wasn't exactly planned, it still influenced the writing style of Brassica and further distinguished it from our other games (although there's more to say on that one) and in hindsight, only two lines of text also look a lot cleaner in this layout.
I could go on about the actual implementation of the UI but this has already been a pretty lengthy post so maybe I'll save it for another devlog.

Do any of your muses have tattoos? If so, give some details.
Andrew has a tattoo for Ronan, Essa, Cara, and Nora. It’s small, five ace of spades lined up in a row and one is shaded in. All of them have/had the same tattoo with different one shaded in (it was based on their age in the group) and Nora will get the same tattoo with the last one shaded in when she’s in her twenties and no longer under Cara’s watchful eye.
Aurélie has a few and she’s not going to be the first person on Denmark’s throne with tattoos either. She has the word ‘Luz’ on her left wrist and the lion from the Danish coat of arms on her right foot, though people that only glance at it briefly may think it’s a lizard. Then Elie has a cheeky little heart tattoo on her right booty cheek, but shh, only someone really special would know about that because it’s even covered in panties and bikini bottoms.
Emir has gotten a tattoo in every city he’s been deployed to since his enlistment, almost all of which are locations in the Middle East. This is the makings of a sleeve on his left arm. Kind of frowned upon, but it is covered in his military uniform.
Kailani has a dreamcatcher on her right ribcage. It hurt enough for her to not think about getting any more tattoos.
Nathaniel has quotes from his favorite books and poems, his favorite constellations, and a few simple line art tattoos. They’re all covered up when he’s at work so long as his shirt is buttoned up correctly, but they all hold significant meaning for him and he’s typically pretty reluctant to talk to most women about them. You definitely wouldn’t expect as many tattoos as he has until you see him without a shirt on.
Octavius has more tattoos than most of my characters. Many are family related: symbols for his father, mother, and sister; the family crest. He also has the national seal from the Mexican flag; a woman with her face painted in the sugar skull style while surrounded by Mexican marigolds and dahlias; and a small monarch butterfly.
Quin/Teague used to canonically have tattoos, but the more I thought about it the less I pictured him with them. He’s too clever and self-obsessed. I’m sure he had one for a past relationship, which he’s since had removed. In his mind this makes him more difficult to identify on CCTV.
Solena has the “heavy soul” in small print under her left breast, a lily (the national flower of Italy) on her left forearm, her mother’s name copied from a letter on her left wrist. Sol definitely has plans for more, but she’s very intentional about them.
Tadgh has a small-ish capital ‘T’ over his heart that is overlaid three times in black, red, and blue. One for his name, once for his late wife Tris, and one for his late son Tomás. Depending on the verse there may be others. For example, he would have an S overlaid twice in green and red in his Sea Glass Saga universe; once in green for Selene and once in red for Sorcha. I’d guess that would be on his wrist where you’d check for a pulse.
Taney is very dedicated to her ‘she is Satan’ shtick and as such has a few amusing tattoos, such as a simply cross on her middle finger that is positioned intentionally to be upside down when she flicks people off. “Made in Hell” in a stamp style tattoo on the bottom of her right foot. A watercolor lion on her right ribcage, a watercolor dragon on her shoulder blade, a Wednesday Addams tattoo, and a few other morbid oddities are all verse-dependent. It’s always safe to just assume she has tattoos and ask me if you want specifics.
Thaddeus has way too many tattoos to address in on one post. He has full sleeves on both arms, some tattoos on his chest and back (I’d say about half his back is covered and the upper part of his chest is done), and he has a few on his hands.
Charlie has a clover (for her last name) behind her right ear. She’s pretty whimsical so I’m sure she’ll have more down the road but never anything that would be very obvious or showy because of her job.
Hazel kinda lucked out. I love Zoë’s tattoos so they’re all the same.
If one of my characters isn’t on here then they either don’t have tattoos or they just flat out refuse to tell me about them.

Tattoo/Flower Shop Stenbrough
Bill was always voted the most artistic
Whenever the teacher needed something drawn on the board, he could almost hear the comically cartoon-ish whipping of everyone’s heads in sync
He had learned young that while he could not always rely on his voice, that didn’t mean he couldn’t rely on his words
He started with stories, stories of ghosts and wolves and adventure
He eventually turned to comics to tell his narratives in color and action
at some point, the pictures take over the comics, and soon Bill is spending just as much time drawing in sketchbooks as he is writing out small novels in his journals
He takes to watercolor in particular, beautifully layering the ink
He goes to community college for writing, but he also knows that he needs a more stable income, too
So Bill searches for a more practical use of his talent, at least in his mind, and somehow ends up in a small tattoo parlor in Jersey
Tattoos weren’t even his passion when he found himself there, but then he starts as an apprentice, and he’s enthralled
Because every person that comes into that shop is the narrative, they are the story, and he gets to help them tell a piece of that story
His love for watercolor is definitely present in his work, he prefers color tattoos over black and white
And after a few years, he’s grown close with the owner, and taken over the shop with two other guys. with all the playful banter between them while at the shop, they kind of feel like brothers to him
(Older brothers, he thinks. or brothers of the same age. He doesn’t dare think of younger brothers, or why it was he ran from his home in Maine in the first place)
The town is cozy and familiar, he walks the same path to work each day
There’s lots of commercial stores, but the small mom and pop shops are really what stands out to him
The bakery on 7th, where every middle school girl in their town dreams of working 
The organic shop that specializes in hand made soaps and fresh jams
And then there’s the flower shop, right on the corner of broad, busy and bright and always a warm welcome
Bill passes the shop, expecting to wave to the old man that runs it, but has to catch his breath instead
There’s a beautiful boy inside
That’s it, that’s all Bill can describe that moment as. a beautiful boy
He wears a light blue sweater that’s loose against his collar, with neat shoes and beige pants, and his curls
All Bill wants to do is pet his hair
And this boy looks stern, lips pressed together into a line, but if you look at his eyes you can see them sparkle
(Yes, Bill is going with sparkle.)
He lights up as he looks at all the flowers, and Bill wants to stay to find out which flowers he ends up choosing, but he can’t
He has to get to work, and he’s been stood still on the pavement in front of this flower shop for far too long to just be waving
All day at work he thinks of that boy, and to every customer that comes in without a reference, he suggests flowers to
Most of them laugh, because they know Big Bill,  and Big Bill knows them - knows that flowers aren’t their style, thinks he’s pulling their leg
It happens again once later in the week, and a third time the week after
After the first, Bill looks back to see if he can catch a glimpse of a bouquet, but every time the man leaves his hands are empty
Five weeks in, Bill let’s his coworkers know he’s gonna be a little late. He’s only ever seen this man on his Monday and Wednesday morning walks, but once he knew what he was looking for, Bill starting noticing him there on those same days every week
This time he walks slowly, stops at a shop to grab tea
Coffee never really suited him
He leans against the wall next to the flower shop, pretend for a second he could be smooth, and waits for this mystery guy to come out
“Y-y-you’ve been in t-there how many times, and you n-never get any f-flowers”
The boy turns around, eyes raised and mouth flat, somehow managing to look surprised and completely exasperated all at once
“I’m sorry?”
“How am I sup-po-po-posed to know which f-flowers to buy you if you n-n-never leave with any”
Bill has never called himself smooth, but he has always been steady
He looks determined while he talks, and smiles openly
Bill is rewarded will a short “tsk” but the boy is smiling back at him, so it’s definitely a win, right?
“You don’t even know my name.”
“So t-tell me.”
“Stan.”
It’s definitely a win.
They start walking together, somehow, away from Bill’s work and back towards a cafe that Bill knows is popular for large windows and a beautiful atmosphere
“How come I’ve n-never seen you in there be-f-f-for?”
Turns out Stan was running from his own past, had only started working there three weeks ago. Before that, he was still being interviewed - as if the old man didn’t already love Stan from his flower knowledge alone
They talk for two hours, and it takes them until midway through for Bill to realize he never gave his own name
When Stan asks him what he does, Bill smiles and rolls up his sleeves, getting to show off some of his favorite pieces
Most of them are sentimental. Vague symbols that depict different parts of his life
Stan’s eyes go wide, and he enthusiastically starts asking Bill about the individual illustrations
Bill can’t believe Stan is so interested in his story, but he happily answers all of his questions
“and the ghost?”
“He thrusts his f-fist against the p-p-post, and s-still insists he sees the g-ghost”
Stan looks cute when his eyebrows scrunch together
He holds up his hand as if to signify Bill to continue.
“Just something my m-mom had me practice to t-t-try and help my s-stutter”
“It obviously worked well”
There’s no malice there, and Bill laughs, he can laugh, because here’s someone who doesn’t skirt around him, who pushes back, while still being genuinely interested in what Bill has to say
When they do leave, they shake hands, as if this was a formal meeting instead of a happenstance meeting
By the time Bill actually gets to work, everyone knows something is up, and he tries not to listen to his friends fuss over him
They know
They’ve met “flower shop boy”
Told him alllll about Bill
And Bill’s first thought is that Stan still pretended he knew nothing about Bill, nothing in the slightest
“T-that little shit!”
Everyone is laughing, and everyone is happy for Bill, because boy is Bill happy
He meets Stan again two days later, and boy, just one day seemed like agony
They start going on regular dates at casual places around town
Stan brings flowers over to Bill’s shop once every two weeks, because he knows no one else is there taking care of the plants, but the shop looks so much better with flowers in it
Eventually Stan brings over bright blue and purple succulents in addition to the flowers
Sometimes, when the schedules get flipped, Stan will bring flowers over on a day where Bill isn’t there
He’s always hesitant to leave the flowers, as if Bill won’t see them when he comes in the next day, won’t know that it was Stan that brought them over, but pride keeps him from taking his flowers and leaving
(Bill thinks this is incredibly cute, when he hears about this. He’s so far gone on this flower boy, it hurts)
When Stan hesitantly asks Bill if he’d like to accompany him outside the city to do some bird watching, Bill’s heart just fucking melts
The entire day is peaceful, and both feel like they’ve completely left behind their regular life
Bill asks Stan at some point if he’d ever get a tattoo
Bill gets a solid ‘maybe’
He asks Stan what he would get, and Stan tells him he’d get a small Bohemian Waxwing
Bill was definitely expecting a flower
But a waxwing was the first bird Stan ever identified when he was little and in the boy scouts. He’d just gotten his book, and he’d spent days outside in the cold winter air looking for birds. But there were hardly any out, and he could only flip through the pages so fast, and he definitely didn’t know birds well enough yet to not need the book
Bill is smitten
Absolutely smitten
He leans over slowly, and rolls his eyes at the slow pace before leaning in himself to meet Bill halfway
That’s their first kiss, in the gentle end-of-summer breeze, warm wind and orange sunlight dancing across their skin as their lips touch
They’re both in love, and they get to stay that way for their rest of their lives
Happy, in love, and together

MOSAIC
A mosaic is an art form wherein small pieces are used to make a picture.
I started with collecting eggshells and pistachio shells. The eggshells stank a lot because apparently you have to remove the membrane first. Afterwards, I bought a 15" x 20" illustration board and trimmed it into an A3.
I also decided to not use the nut shells because I figured they would be too difficult to deal with.

I searched up some reference photos and then I sketched the initial layout on the board.

I proceeded to do a few tests using the leftover cutouts. Since eggshells are only white, I had to put some pigment on them.
I tried using watercolors and saw that it wasn’t very pigmented. I also had to use the inner side of the shells because the paint didn’t really stick much. Maybe I'll use them for lighter shades.
I also bought poster colors and they worked better than watercolors.

Now it's time to glue the shells on the board.
Mmmmmm. ... Honestly it feels incredibly overwhelming. But'cha know, I have to start somewhere.

I don't know anymore. What is time? I can't feel my hands. Yet onward I go! Sir Bilog’s smile and cheery attitude gets me going.

I really don’t know what I’m doing. I just decided to fill in some spaces.

I finally figured out what I’m doing. The spirits of byzantine mosaic artists guided me. It seems like I needed to start with the outlines.

Anyways, I finished the outline and I intended to paint them first because they might get lost.

Woaahh it looks like the eggshells are dancing. I think someone's watching me. The eggshells are trying to tell me something...

I decided to cut the huge parts into sections so I don’t get as much of a mental breakdown.

It's dark... It's cold... There’s a storm outside... yet here I am cracking eggshells into small rectangles.

The face is more detailed so I had to make smaller pieces. They're excruciatingly microscopic. They're still bigger than my self esteem.

My back hurts.
FINALLY DONE WITH THE SHELL GLUING. It is life-changing. I now understand the working conditions of enslaved children in China. I now know the suffering of Filipino workers who died building the Manila Film Center.
Time to color! Ooh the fun part!

I mixed yellow and brown watercolors to make a golden-ish background (I tried).
I used a golden metallic pen for the nimbus. I actually kinda regretted doing that because it made it less visible.
I used the leftover dirty water from painting the background to paint the skin. 
I used copic markers to add details to the face, add shadow to the neck, emphasize the colors on the robe, and add details to the neck accessory.
I used brown poster paint and yellow watercolor for the hair.
I used blue watercolor and blue poster paint for the wings.
Aaaaanndd that’s about it.
Approximate time: Thirty-two hours and twenty minutes. If I ever see another egg shell, I am going to explode.

Hello friends! Not dead just checkin in
ive been working on a lot of irl stuff which means I havent been on the comp as much but also means that I'm gonna post pics soon! Ive been slowly but surely working on that lagoona with her eyes carved out and now she has NO LEGS bc I'm turning her into a mermaid and ive just about to ished her face up and stand I think and I still need to make her a wig or do something w her hair and try my hand at eyes lololol (its v intimidating to try the stuff u know bc u see all these great ones and u want urs to look like that but its also the first time u have tried them and u get me lol)
but yeee plus I HAVE been drawing and doing stuff in my sketchbook and I got a new watercolor set recently too so I wanna try that out yeeee
AND ALSO ive been doing a lot of accessory painting and fancying up so thats a thing too

The 9th Annual L.A.O.K Awards
I’m no artist, but I did love art class growing up, and let’s just say I’ve won a few coloring contests in my day (God did I live for coloring contests). Let’s also say that in high school I did a watercolor of one of my stepmom’s nature photographs, and let’s say that it ended up in the yearbook. That watercolor was the crowning achievement of my many classes with Ms. Warren, our high school art teacher. Let me paint a picture of Ms. Warren for you: short spiky blonde hair, this pattern Gap button down every day, long denim skirt, and the unfaltering attitude of someone who was born to be an artist but instead ended up teaching ungrateful teenagers who called things “gay” around you even though you were clearly a lesbian.
Months after completing that watercolor, I began work on acrylic painting I’ll admit was uninspired, but I still gave it my best. The composition featured a bird on a branch in narrow focus, so that everything in the background was blurry, and I had planned on giving it to my mom as a Mother’s Day present. The problem was that I had no idea how to paint something out of focus, and instead of doing any research or asking my teacher how to do that, I just dove right in and painted from memory and tried to make the lines really soft. Here is that painting, which still hangs in my mother’s bedroom to my everlasting shame.

If you look closely, you might recognize that I cut my losses on this one. That’s because it was at this point in my progress when I fully realized I was in over my head and decided to ask Ms. Warren for some tips. She came over to my desk, looked at the painting for a good 10 seconds, and finally uttered two sentences I’ll never forget: “Garrett, sometimes in art you hit, and sometimes you miss. Your watercolor was a hit.” And she was off to the next student.
That said, sometimes a year in movies is a hit, and sometimes it’s a miss. 2017 was a hit. Now on to the next desk:  
Best Film Eighth Grade The Favourite First Man Mary Queen of Scots Sicario: Day of the Soldado
First off, anyone who didn’t like Mary Queen of Scots can meet me in a laundry cottage halfway between England and Scotland in negative 460 years for another asskicking. What is there not to like about this movie? According to Ben Friday, extreme historical inaccuracy. Okay, if anyone comes up with any non-nerd reasons, please let me know. The second film in my top five that you’re going “Guh, what?” to: Sicario: Day of the Soldado, was actually very good, and it turns out everyone is wrong for thinking it’s not. Wow, definitive proof here (https://letterboxd.com/g_baby9000/film/sicario-day-of-the-soldado/). I also loved First Man’s slow burn. La La Land was a misstep for me from Damien Chazelle, but now I’m right back on the Chazelle train. Bravo for making an unconventional, understated historical biopic, which drives through its seeming monotony with an ever building tension that keeps it compelling from start to finish. Then there’s The Favourite, which continues Yorgos Lanthimos’s reign over this annual list. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when the dictum came down to the Fox marketing department that they were going to go wide with this movie.

In the lead up to Eighth Grade I thought two things: 1) I hope it’s not that good because Bo Burnham’s age and career make me feel inadequate, and 2) It probably isn’t that good because everyone’s talking about how good it is. In LA, if you don’t see a movie until after its release date you are a total loser, and I went even a few weeks after that, so it was already sufficiently hyped. I honestly didn’t expect much from it, and it totally blew me away with it’s humor and heartwarmingness in a way that no other film matched in 2018. I’ll talk more about this great film below.

Not to retread the obvious, but I think about Eighth Grade and its screenplay in much the same way as Avatar. Predictability and the use of stock plotting does not equate to bad writing, and even if you know exactly what’s going to happen (Kayla must end up with Gabe) it can be done in such a satisfying way that the story still sings (which is the reason why the same story lines continue to be retread). From early on, we can guess pretty much what Kayla’s arc will be, but the fact that it plays out in just the right way, so that you can’t really imagine it had the potential to be anything else, is what makes it such a high mark in screenwriting. Getting to this point in a screenplay is very difficult, because it’s usually only after figuring out the 50 paths not to go down that you realize the obviously correct one. When it finally clicks which Scene B should follow Scene A, the screenwriter too realizes that it couldn’t have been any other way, it just takes a lot of work to get there. I put Eighth Grade on for my second viewing while building an IKEA dresser a week or two ago, and it filled me with such glee. I was doubled over with laughter more than once and had to watch some scenes five times before I could move on.

Like I said above, I don’t really know anything about the historicity of this movie. Apparently the rabble-rousing preacher that everyone was supposed to hate actually was cool and founded my own church’s denomination? Anyway, I loved the way this was paced, only parsing out the information you absolutely needed and trusting you to catch up through its many jumps in time, expertly illustrated via cutbacks to Queen Elizabeth. The characters were complex (especially Elizabeth) and the dialogue was snappy. There’s nothing better than seeing someone in an authority position take someone’s shit just long enough before thoroughly dressing them down at the exact appropriate time, and Mary gets many such chances to shine thusly.

Was tempted after another viewing to switch this to Damien Chazelle, but I had already written the following paragraph, and I’m too lazy to redo it. From the opening shot of Roma, two things are clear: you’re in the hands of a great director, and it’s a damn good thing you’re in a theater because it’s gonna be a long, slow ride. If you watched this on Netflix from start to finish without looking at your phone, I salute you (and I’ll say the same for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). If you haven’t seen it on the big screen and live in LA, it’s currently playing at the Landmark and Vista, so check it out. Also how insane is it that Cuaron will likely win the Oscar in this category this year, making Mexican directors winners in this category 5 out of the last 6 years? Specifically, Cuaron, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Guillermo del Toro, who were already known as the Three Amigos long before going on this stretch?

I’ve talked about this before, but it seems so many years I struggle to come up with a good list of best actresses (while supporting actress overflows with abundance). I had wondered if I was just a misogynist, but it became clear to me over time that there just weren’t nearly as many films with females in starring roles, let along female protagonists. However, not only did I have trouble paring down my favorites to five this year, there were many more female-driven films I could have drawn from. I really felt like this was a year for women in film, and it was great. The idea that women/minority leads can’t drive box office success seems finally to be a thing of the past, and it’s about damn time. This all probably comes across as liberal posturing, but if you know me well you’ll understand it’s really born from my own selfishness. First, I don’t want special treatment over anyone because I highly value fairness, and the reason highly value fairness is mainly because I don’t want anyone else to get special treatment over me. Second, I don’t care if a story is about women, black people, Asian people, aliens, some fish, or a fuckin’ toaster, a good story is a good story, and I don’t want to miss out one because some marketing executive wants to save his ass. Not once have I ever been not able to get into a film because the protagonist was a different age/race/gender than me. Even though some of them aren’t on this list, Annihilation, Ocean’s 8, Thoroughbreds, Suspiria, Roma, The Favourite, Widows, and Mary Queen of Scots not only had female leads, but fully female-centric casts, and all were either da bomb, fairly da bomb, or da bomb-ish.

Pretty thrilled TBoBS is on Netflix, because I recently went back just to watch my favorite two segments: “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “The Mortal Remains.” Still not really sure what “The Mortal Remains” is all about ‘cause I’m not that smart about that kind of stuff, but damn did all five of them chew up the scenery, and none more so than Tyne Daly.

I didn’t hate Vice, but it seems like everyone else did. I also didn’t love The Big Short, but it also seems like everyone else did, somehow causing the people who loved The Big Short to hate the Vice. But I don’t think you can deny Christian Bale on this one, or at least I don’t think you can triumph Gary Oldman in The Final Hour or whatever it was called, but deny Christian Bale in Vice. Best Documentary The Dawn Wall Minding the Gap RBG Three Identical Strangers Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Syeeeke. Did I say I was done coming up with things to write? ‘Cause I got lots to say about this. First let’s get it out of the way. Free Solo is a mediocre documentary about some excellent subject matter. Jimmy Chin made another one of my favorite documentaries, Meru, that definitely did not get the acclaim it deserved, so if he finds that acclaim with Free Solo, then super. And if it wins the Oscar, I won’t be sad about it. What I will be sad about, is that another documentary, also about climbing El Capitan, The Dawn Wall, got totally overshadowed be Free Solo. I watched The Dawn Wall first, and I think that may have something to do with shaping how I felt about Free Solo, but The Dawn Wall had a better, more interesting, more likable protagonist, with a more interesting story to tell about himself and his climbing attempt and way better climbing material! Now, there’s no denying that climbing the full height of El Capitan without a rope is riveting, awe-inspiring, and completely insane, and the 5-10 minutes of Free Solo that actually cover that feat are impossible to top, but if for the other 90 minutes (both films are exactly 1:40) you’d like to watch a doc about climbing El Capitan, it has to be The Dawn Wall. If you’d like those 90 minutes to instead be about a whiny guy who lives in van, then by all means, champion Free Solo. I don’t want to say too much more about why I think it’s better, because I want people to see it and experience it. Hopefully it starts streaming soon. (And if you did see and like Free Solo, please check out Meru, which is currently streaming on Netflix.) The other docs were also great, and what a shame that Won’t You Be My Neighbor? didn’t get nominated for an Oscar, which made me cry evertim.

Refuse to Watch Any more Clint Eastwood Movies
The 15:17 to Paris was truly a straw-that-broke-the-camel’s-back-breakingly bad movie. Literally worse acting and writing than some student films I’ve seen. And I’m not talking about the Student Academy Awards, I’m talking about the ones I watched from my own peers in my own undergrad film classes. And I’m not talking about some USC or UCLA film classes, I’m talking about University of Oklahoma film classes, where they actively did not give us film equipment to use, because we were a studies program and not a production program, even though no one there wanted to do anything but be writer/directors, and they seemed to resent us all for that fact so we had an edit bay in like an old closet or something and it was on one of the original iMacs with the hockey puck mouse and everything. The last tolerable Clint Eastwood move was Mystic River don’t @ me.

Hmm, a New Wave Anit-Western starring Robert Pattinson with folk dancing and real-life weirdo non-actors, an obvious grand slam slam dunk, right? Wrong. Boy do I wish I had known the Zellner Brothers were also the ones behind Kumiko the Treasure Hunter before going into this. I could have at least prepared myself for all the meandering. I don’t really mind meandering if it serves a story/theme, say like in another seminal film in the genre, Meek’s Cutoff, but you can miss me wit dat meandering for meandering’s sake. The script for Damsel is a great example of an antithesis for what made Eighth Grade so great. The meandering here is not only in the physical sense, but also in the story sense, where no scene absolutely had to happen, and nothing in particular means anything. You would think that a character strapping dynamite to themselves and walking a few miles would fill a theater with Hitchcockian dread and similarly provide a Hitchcockian catharsis when that character eventually blows up. Instead, it’s just one more in a long line of things happening that never add up to what we would call a “story.” Like in Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, the interesting parts that never make up a whole are in themselves still interesting, and I’ll forever be grateful for that film’s gift of the discovery of the Yamasuki Singers. In the same way, I’ll forever be grateful to Damsel’s opening credits sequence, the chance for another stellar character performance from R Patt, the incredible mise-en-scène, and for giving Mia Wasikowska another opportunity to put a mediocre film on her back and carry it to the finish line (what if some day she starred in a good movie??). Perhaps my harshest criticism of Damsel is also one of my proudest film-watching moments. The film’s true lead isn’t even featured on the poster; it’s a character named Parson Henry, portrayed by David Zellner. About 3/4 of the way in, I thought to myself, this actor is so absolutely lacking of anything you could call charisma, I bet it’s the director and he cast himself in the lead role, and you know what? It was. *sunglasses emoji*

Most Surreal Movie-Watching Moment When me and Becca and Joe and Natalie went to see Rampage kind of as a joke when we had our Moviepasses so it was like whatev, and the theater was PACKED even though it was a week or two after it came out, and at one point The Rock is going in for a pound with the big white gorilla that he trained, and the gorilla fakes the pound, then flips off The Rock and starts gorilla-laughing at its gorilla antics, and the audience went. fucking. NUTS. Like it was the purest moment of comedy that ever existed. It was a Sullivan’s Travels-level eye-opener for me. Give the dumb galoots what they want, and what they want, is to see a gorilla give The Rock the finger.
