"Palestine is a story away.” This is what Refaat Alareer wrote on my copy of the short story anthology he edited in 2014, Gaza Writes Back. The contributors were his students at the Islamic University of Gaza.

When I published my poetry book, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear: Poems from Gaza, in 2022, the first person I gave a copy to in Gaza was Refaat. I signed the copy by writing, “Palestine is a poem away.”

Now Refaat is a world away. He was assassinated on December 6 by the Israeli army. The only weapon in his Gaza apartment was an EXPO marker. If the Israeli soldiers were to raid his house, he said, he would throw it at them, while crying, “We are helpless.”

I don't often feel small. But on the days I do, I look for things that remind me I'm not alone, and that I'm not small, and that no one else is either.

DC Comics has a wonderful tribute to Rachel Pollack in the Pride anthology from 2023, where I got to hear different anecdotes and thoughts on her work and her character. I've never heard of this woman before. But as I finished my reading on this section of the collection with newfound appreciation, I went back to the first person that spoke of her personally (because for someone to write so beautifully and paced leaves an impression i wanted to revist right after my visited interest in this woman was quenched), and I was caught on seeing your name.

Thank you for talking about your experiences with a woman that clearly shared so many stories and carried so many more. It let me learn something with everyone's little window into her life, and yours was especially heartwarming.

I have looked up to you ever since I watched your Masterclass. A little silly, to listen to someone I had never gotten to read. But I'm changing that now lately. It's good to be changing it.

I want to write comics someday. There's times I think I won't get to. But it's important to remind ourselves there's all types of people writing these stories of justice and change. That I can dream to write, and we can dream to dream, and it's special to know there's creators like you and Rachel Pollack and Josh Trujillo and so many more out there that think so too.

Thank you for doing that step to remember others. And thank you for writing so much to care about.

Rachel was a special person, and I'm so glad her life inspired you.

reading about edmund curll, an important figure in erotic literature, and didn't know i was about to stumble across the most chaotic wikipedia page ever... i love historical literary drama

critics have always been the same

and of course where there is 1700s literary drama, alexander pope is always involved. no wonder byron idolized him and was involved in a seven-year long public debate concerning him... honoring him the way he'd like to be remembered (see: the pope-bowles controversy). don juan rly was a tribute to him. we need a series about the restoration era (behn/wilmot/dryden/etc) & of course the young romantics (byron/shelleys/keats/etc) and now we also need the augustan era (pope/montagu/now curll, etc.). someone please pplease please let me do an anthology series (in the vein of ahs or black mirror) about literary communities throughout history already!

the most informative thing i've learned from edmund curll's wiki page is that in the 1700s, the name of the U.S. state "maryland" inspired a whole genre of erotica novels based on puns of the idea of a "[woman's name]-land," as evidenced by "bettyland." staples of the genre included colonization as a metaphor for patriarchal sexual conquest, & erotic descriptions of the female body which borrow from descriptions of natural landscape. much to think about re: postcolonial feminism - this quite literally proves the idea that colonization is inherently patriarchal

Now that some of Marvel Pride Allies Variant covers are posted, I want to make a few quick notes in anticipation of variant cover roast to follow:

A) What series of systemic failures occurred for editorial to sign off on this? Inquiring minds would like to know. At least mine would. (Even if it turns out it was just a misleading name, which I doubt but is the best outcome, it's still a serious marketing fail. )

B) If you want to see a better Pride anthology from a big company -- go look at DC's line-up for this year. Not only a Pride anthology, but a separate tribute to Rachel Pollack, some YA graphic novels lined up, along with some absolutely lovely variants this year.

Mark Lewisohn really wants to overturn narratives and “Get Back” accidentally gave us incredible insight into how little it takes to make him smoothly and confidently wrong

Great AKOM. Maybe too good because it left basically nothing to add on the primary topic. This show followed my own notes more than any so far—but I had not caught the John quote being about the Maharishi—chef's kiss. 👩‍🍳💋

However... it does give me a chance to riff off something they touched on that I've also been thinking about for awhile: Mark Lewisohn's big desire to overturn narratives, and how wrong he gets it when he runs into a fact check we can all see with our own eyes.

Pre-“Get Back” Mark Lewisohn previewed some of the narratives he was itching to overturn, and off the top explained that no one had really told the Get Back sessions correctly. By trying to ingest all that Nagra audio on a sort of anniversary-tribute calendar schedule—(which is insane, impossible, and hubristic beyond words)—he was prepared to make news on a few fronts. (All clips of him are from 2019.)

First of all, no one has told the "Get Back" sessions story right. Yet.

But after binging the Nagras once the expert is ready to “write it differently”

Redeeming Magic Alex

In this tweet is a hidden wink-wink-hint at the new Magic Alex storyline Lewisohn was queuing up. Although if he hadn't tipped us off in the podcast the “not so bad then” would be meaningless. As it is, we have the key.

Magic Alex has been slandered, his studio was fine, and the Nagras — especially George's good vibes — prove it.

Honestly, just imagine what we would be reading from him if “Get Back” didn't exist. This is the flimsy nonsense he builds entire storylines around. Because he prioritizes flipping narratives second only to deifying John. And like a reporter with a thesis he interviews and searches out sources to prop up that thesis. But unlike a reporter he has no checks. No imperative to give competing evidence. Answers to no one. Is wholly opaque about sources. And most certainly doesn't concern himself with adhering to even the most basic UK and US ethical guidelines for historians.

And so this is possibly the best peek we will ever get into how his process works and just how incredibly flimsy it is.

Paul didn't want to go up on the roof—he was the one who had to be persuaded—because it wasn't enough of a climax

Apparently even Anthology was trying to pull the wool over our eyes about Paul and the rooftop concert, but Lewisohn was ready to rewrite history and tell the truth about Paul not wanting to go up on the roof.

The last clip isn't of Mark Lewisohn, but references him as an expert. The final arbiter of fact. And it fits. Because at this point if Mark Lewisohn says it, no matter how ridiculous it is, it becomes cannon. And it pains me to see anyone—especially Beatles' fans—parroting nonsense and looking foolish.

Mark Lewisohn, heroin expert

It is so clear that Mark Lewisohn is going to handle John and Yoko's heroin issue by feigned expertise blended with apologia and creepy idolatry. (See Prellies in Tune In.) How he thinks he's expert enough to opine on the effects of heroin is beyond me, but that's never stopped him before. I really don't think he ever even questions himself or his superior knowledge of anything, despite zero experience or study. His expertise at extricating John from all hard truths is enough, and will make us all stupider. (Also playing now because I am inching up to pointing out something on those Nagras.)

Repeating Mark Lewisohn: the "Two Junkies" interview (where John literally had to stop to throw up) was from a heroin hangover because John and Yoko weren't messed up enough to actually be doing heroin on set

Here's a fun idea

What about a Hunger Games animated anthology series similar to Marvel's What If or AHS Series. The series not only explores different scenarios and what ifs, but also the lives of the victors and what happened to them after the games, as well as some of our beloved tributes from both 74th and 75th Games, like what were their lives back in the districts before the games.

Each season can be 12 episodes and 3 episodes can used for each story.

Example, in season one, the first 3 episodes can explore Haymitch's Hunger Games and in the next 3 episodes can explore what happened if the 74th Games got prematurely cancelled because the rebellion happened earlier.

Of course, Suzanne Collins should be the head writer and the showrunner. Whatever animation style they want to do with that show should be her decision. Also, this is totally not an excuse to have Jack Quaid voice Young Haymitch or a Young Finnick.

"DC Power" Returns for 2024

DC Power is an anthology from DC Comics that pays tribute to DC's black super heroes. The comic is a 104-page prestige format one-shot.

DC Power will contain new stories, as well as the epilogue to Far Sector from writer N.K. Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell, which will show the first meeting between Green Lanterns Sojourner "Jo" Mullein and John Stewart.
