I've been working on this beautiful 1916 treadle machine for 7 months whenever I've had the time. Even though it's been hard and had lots of hurdles, I'm proud to say that as of today: It's officially working!

could antiques dealers PLEASE stop assuming everyone who wants to buy a mechanical clock or an old sewing machine or any sort of Device only wants it for decorative purposes?
Does It Work should be a question you're able to accurately answer before you put an old machine out on the floor
(this post brought to you by: I bought an antique clock as a Christmas gift to myself and my parents just took it to the Clock Guy for me. it was advertised as working, and did indeed tick when wound, but WAY too fast.)
(turns out it has no pendulum. there's literally no way to know if it's actually working or not- apparently ticking when wound means nothing in terms of functionality without a pendulum)
(not only was this not disclosed, but the shopkeeper wouldn't even let me take the clock out of the CASE until I bought it. let alone open the back and see what the situation was. it's possible they hadn't even opened the back when they bought it, and didn't know it was missing a crucial piece)
(it said "working" and had a key, and you don't assume the worst of every antiques dealer you meet, so I trusted them. I'm tempted to leave a negative review even though I love the clock- I factored in repairs when I budgeted to buy it, so that's fine, but what if I hadn't? I'd have a very expensive 25-pound paperweight when I expected a working timepiece)

Literally missing the treadle tho... And arguably a distaff for accuracy. But solid rendering, Larian Studios.
9/10 will be looking for more now.

Brought a spindle to the spinning competition (didn't know it was today so I didn't bring my wheel as it's not a travel wheel) and got renamed Drop Spindle Guy. RIP

Today I will learn all about threading my machine and take a crash course in tension, including what it is and how to fix it with no understanding, context, or experience
We are already off to a great start, where I am quickly realizing that when I someday learn to thread this thing quickly and without looking at the book, I might qualify for some sort of high tier educational certificate in an undecided field

Today's fiber arts update: Guardy goes *AAAAA* about spinning tools.
I'm working on the third single of that merino yarn I'm making, and that leaves me with ample time to think - in this case about my wheel, and how it's simultaneously nearly perfect and a huge pain.
I love my wheel. It is small, it is a perfect combination of form and function, it is very familiar to me, and it cost me 40$. I love spinning on it.
But that 6:1 fixed ratio is a nightmare.
So sometimes I dream of a 14:1 wheel, leisurely spinning fine singles with some flavor of long draw, knowing that I'll get a yarn that'll hold together without having to treadle like I'm trying to set a speed record.
I'm gonna earn myself some extra money over the course of the holiday season, and I do want to put some of that into my hobbies, but I still neither have the extra space nor budget for an entire second wheel - and getting new parts made for old wheels is a complicated thing and I have no idea if I could even find someone to do that within Germany.
There isn't really a point to this aside from me being annoyed that my wheel limits my spinning speed so much.
