Folk Alliance International Conference 2023 Highlights

MEMPHIS WAS THE FIRST “CITY OF HONOR��

KANSAS CITY, MO — The folk music old guard that dominated the Folk Alliance International conferences for the past 35 years has passed the guitar to a new generation that is younger, energized, and mostly female and non-white.

And the kids are all right.

In the BC years (before covid), the annual five-day conference that draws more than 1,000 musicians from around the world was largely the province of aging performers and music lovers.

This year, the beat has changed. Most of the performers were young, female, and non-white lending a whole new energy to the event that was held this past weekend in Kansas City. The LGBTQI community was also well-represented.

Memphis was everywhere, chosen as the “First City of Honor” with Memphis-oriented workshops, speakers, and a slew of talented performers including Amy LaVere, Bailey Biggers, Talibah Safiya, Yella P of Memphisissippi Sound, violinist Alice Hasen and the brilliant Aquarian Blood.

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, poet, and actor Valerie June astounded with her keynote speech that said love and hope can defeat hate and fear.

As she spoke about the global crisis, the “technological hacking of the human mind and body” and nuclear war, she abruptly stopped and flashed her trademark smile. She walked to center stage, picked up a banjo, and played a delicate version of “What A Wonderful World” in defiance of the doomsayers.

Wherever she walked she was treated like royalty. Women and children rushed up and hugged her.

She now lives in Brooklyn but said she would always consider Memphis her home.

Like the rest of us, June went from concert to concert to hear the young artists.

The annual gathering is designed to allow music critics, agents, disc jockeys, and concert and festival bookers to get up close and personal with new artists and discover new talent.

It’s also a chance for singers and musicians to strut their stuff in the smaller, intimate venues of the Westin Hotel and gather new fans. There are organized workshops and concerts during the day and evening, though much of the action started at 10:30 p.m. and continued almost to daybreak in hundreds of hotel rooms converted into makeshift music spots. Sometimes a performer played for just one or two people, a memorable experience.

There were a few older performers here, like Tom Paxton and Janis Ian, who acted in more of a non-performing, advisory capacity. Ian received a well-deserved lifetime achievement award. Paxton said he was just there to be inspired by the young people.

Instead of the usual performances by folk icons like Livingston Taylor, John McCutcheon and Eliza Gilkyson, visitors chose between blues singers from Memphis, storytellers from Ireland, brash bands from Australia, and new Americana voices from everywhere,

The toughest challenge is choosing who to see since every concert choice means missing hundreds of other mini-concerts going on elsewhere.

In one, Josh White Jr. seemed a little baffled when his co-performer, 92-year-old jazz genius, composer, and orchestra conductor David Amram asked him to play “House of the Rising Sun” a second time. But he smiled and acquiesced.

Amram impulsively invited young musicians he just met hours earlier to join them. Violinist Rahel-Liis Aasrand of Estonia and percussionist Natalia Miranda from Guatemala nervously joined Amram and White in an impromptu jazz number, as if they had played together for years.

Amy Lavere has a voice much larger than her lithe frame which was dwarfed by the stand-up bass she played. Her voice is at once sweet and powerful and her accompanying guitarist and violinist could not have been better.

Alice Hasen and showed just how versatile the violin could be, switching gears from classical to folk to almost hip-hop.

There was music around every corner. In one room, Brit Shane Hennessey played an instrumental tribute to Chet Atkins. In another, the laid-back Aquarian Blood’s J.B. Horrell played the guitar upright between his knees while his wife, Laurel, sang along.

And the talent goes on and on, stretching out through the halls and into the early morning hours as it expands the definition of folk music far, far beyond the notion of a guy with a guitar.

The Verizon Heritage - Hitting A Ball And Having A Ball On Hilton Head Island

A little sand, a little surf, and a lot of golf. That's the recipe for the week of April 14-20th 2008 on Hilton Head Island, otherwise known as Verizon Heritage week around these parts. If your are headed this way as a Heritage player or spectator, let it be known that Hilton Head knows what hospitality and a good time is all about - on and off the greens. The Verizon Heritage Golf Tournament has been played on the famed Harbour Town Golf Links at the Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head Island, SC every year since 1969. The host course was designed by Pete Dye, with input from Jack Nicklaus. Known to locals as "The Heritage", South Carolina's only PGA TOUR event has been scheduled during the week following the Masters since 1983. This year's Verizon Heritage will be April 14 -20, 2008.

The tournament's Pro-Am is a great way to entertain clients as well as spend time with a PGA professional. The price for the Pro-Am event includes a free round of golf, eight clubhouse badges, weekly parking pass, gift packages, and much more. The Heritage Classic Foundation is the general sponsor of the tournament. The local support of generous sponsors, helpful volunteers, and countless spectators make this a must attend event every year. Since it was founded in 1987 as a not-for-profit organization, the Foundation has helped thousands of people in need throughout the area and state. In 2007, the Heritage Classic Foundation was honored to donate $1.8 million dollars, bringing the total to more than $16.6 million since it was organized. Past winners of the Heritage include Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Payne Stewart, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Hale Irwin, Davis Love III, and Jack Nicklaus. A record purse of $5.5 million dollars, with $990,000 going to the winner, makes this year's tournament win more sought after than ever.

If you've never played at Harbourtown, give yourself a treat and come in a few days early or stay a few days after the tournament to get in a round at this much hailed course. Just walking up the green on the 18th will make you feel like tipping your hat to the invisible crowd.

But, contrary to popular belief, man (and woman) cannot live by golf alone. Hilton Head Island has made it pretty easy to enjoy every moment you are here on our little paradise, from relaxing in great accommodations to hopping on a dolphin tour to getting a champion level massage. For great ocean front hotel accommodations, there is the Westin Resort and Spa, the Hilton Oceanside Resort and the Marriott Resort and Spa, along with a host of several smaller or less expensive choices for your stay. Long island web design The Holiday Inn Oceanfront is a nice choice for families, with plenty of white sand beach on which to run and play, while claiming one of the more famous watering holes on the island - namely the Tiki Hut. For a more quiet and yes, romantic respite, the Main Street Inn is quaint, beautifully decorated and brimming with hospitality. Hotel rooms are at a premium during the Heritage, and as expected the prices are higher as well. Don't let that scare you - it's not that much more. Besides, you deserve it.

You've got a great place to stay during the Heritage, now, what to eat... while at the tournament, there will be quite a few delectable dining opportunities for you, but face it, you're either in a tent or standing up while you eat. So, here are some options:

Breakfast

Palmetto Bay Marina Sunrise Cafe - like the name says, they open at sunrise, making this a perfect place for the tournament early bird. They make their own Hollandaise Sauce (this is important to me) and the view isn't bad either. Just around the circle from sea Pines Plantation is Skillets, located in Coligny Plaza. Open at 7 am, and offering a nice menu of your breakfast favorites, Skillets is a great place for a hearty start to your day on the course. If you're really hungry, try "The Kitchen Sink" - no, it's really, really good. If you really want to eat like a local, try Harold's Diner midway down the island right on William Hilton Parkway. I can't really explain Harold's, you just need to go there and eat for yourself.

Lunch

Conveniently located in Sea Pines at the Sea Pines Center, Calibogue Cafe & Trading Co. is a good lunch joint, and a great place (the deli part) to grab a few goodies for snacking on later. Feel like one of the "Brat Pack" at Frankie Bones, located on Main Street on the north end of Hilton Head Island. Great themed menu items, a full bar and really fun atmosphere make for a nice getaway from the golf course. The Boathouse II serves up an American and Seafood menu, but it's really all about the view here. No greens, just miles and miles of intra coastal waterway to gaze at while you dine.

Dinner

For an old tried-and-true favorite, Alexander's in Palmetto Dunes is a great choice for American, Seafood, and a fantastic view. Aqua Grille and Lounge is new school, serving up beautiful seafood dishes in a trendy atmosphere (Guess the color scheme.) In the mood for a great steak? Crane's Tavern on New Orleans Road has been doing it right for a long time now. Nearly every restaurant here is casual, even if the menu is not - no need for the tux. Just make sure to bring something besides shorts to wear.

The choices for dinner dining are nearly endless, from ethnic to seafood to fast food. However, this is a resort town, and we tend to see a lot of comings and goings on the restaurant scene. I don't want to get you all excited about some place, then you find it no longer exists when you get here. Needless to say, something just as yummy usually takes its place, so no need to worry, you definitely won't go hungry on Hilton Head.

Hilton Head Golf

If watching all that championship golf has you itching to get out there and hit a few yourself, Hilton Head Island has around 30 courses to help you scratch it. Here is just a sampling:

The Heritage Collection features 4 locations and a total of 9 courses for you to play. Palmetto Hall has two championship courses, Oyster Reef - one, Port Royal has three and Shipyard has three 9 hole courses (in case you only have time for 9 since you are here for the Heritage, aren't you?) all are only a short distance apart and are impeccably maintained. Sea Pines Resort offers the Sea Marsh and Ocean Courses, just down the way from Harbourtown. Hilton Head National has challenging 9 hole courses and is off the Heritage beaten path a bit just over the bridge in Bluffton. Everyone is going to try and squeeze a round in while they are here, so try to decide where you want to play before you get here and book as early as they will let you. Don't worry if it rains - you won't melt.

Water Activities

Hilton Head Island is well known for it's championship golf courses, but heck, did you check the name? It is an ISLAND, so you better believe there are plenty of opportunities to grab some sun, surf and fish while you are here. Outside Hilton Head offers everything from Kayak tours to charter fishing excursions. These guys are all about the great outdoors, especially the part that is all wet, and can even plan a day long excursion for groups or families. Commander Zodiac will give you the coolest dolphin tour ever, as you speed along in these cool little red boats designed for water rescue operations. Great guides, and a fun ride between dolphin sightings. They also rent jet skis and offer indulgent kids programs as well.

There are just a million and one things to do on the water, including sitting on one of the white sand beaches and just looking at it. Be careful, you may never get back to the tournament.

World Class Tennis Courts

For as much as we love our golf here on Hilton Head Island, we really do love our tennis too. You won't need to travel far to find one of hundreds of the well maintained tennis courts here. Shipyard Plantation is home to world renown Van Der Meer Tennis Academy, so everyone can look good on the court. Palmetto Dunes as well as Port Royal also sport beautiful tennis facilities. Clay or hard court, day or night, we have a tennis court for you. Yes, we take tennis pretty seriously here, we even have a court named after the great (and now local) Stan Smith. That doesn't mean you can't have a little fun and play a match or two. Just don't let Stan see you, could get embarrassing.

Nightlife

After a day in the sun at Harbour Town, a fun night on the island is around every corner (wait, islands don't have corners, do they?) Anyway, the choices for your night time activities is endless on Hilton Head. There are several sports bars to relive the day's tournament activities and have a cold Barley Pop (that's beer for you non-midwesterners) For some sweet sounds, check out the Jazz Corner in the Village at Wexford. My choice for people watching is the upscale Metropolitan, where the Martini is king and golf shirts are not, or the gritty Ryders, where the abundance of leather clothing and vodka shots will make you not mind the really loud music. Shelter Cove has a number of places right on the water that you can walk to. And if you are feeling a little on the wild side, check out the area fondly known as the Barmuda Triangle - just outside the gates of Sea Pines. You can catch a local band or guitar strummin singer almost any night of the week, inside or out.

There are three movie theaters on the island for a more subdued evening out, and feel downright cultured with tickets to a local theatrical production. The South Carolina Repertory Company, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and Main Street Youth Theater are all here, and at least one of them will have something entertaining for your to view during your Heritage visit.

Plus, there is always just taking a stroll on the beach - it's a lot less crowded than during the day, and the sound of the tides is the perfect lullaby. Just remember napping on the beach is all right - making it your hotel room is not.

Tourist Attractions

Well, let's see... we have a big ocean, and lots of white sand beaches, and dolphins and championship golf courses. Do you need anything else? Here are some options in case you are one of those hard to please sorts.

You really should check out the unofficial symbol of Hilton Head Island, the Harbour Town Lighthouse while you are at the Heritage. It's just down the road, and it doesn't take all that long to climb to the top and check out the amazing view of beach, ocean and greens. Neat little gift shop to wander through at the top as you try to hide while you catch your breath. The Liberty Oak Tree is a fabulous spot for a photo, and during the summer is the place to be with the kids for fun filled concerts. There may well be some entertainment under those century old boughs during the Heritage also - check it out when you get here.

The Coastal Discovery Museum is small, but is a great place for all you out-of-towners to learn about the local flora and fauna, as well as island history. There are signs of the Hilton Head's involvement in the Civil War, and the Gullah influence, in several areas on the island. For a deeper understanding of how it's roots, make sure to take one of the many tours offered. Plus, the Museum's nature tours are not to be missed. Unless you're playing golf, of course. We know your priorities.

Take in the island beauty and see inside many of the "Plantations" (communities ) as you bicycle through the 45 miles of trails that weave in and around the island. Ride though Pines, Palmettos and Spanish Moss draped Live Oaks, as well as gorgeous marshes and lagoons. The terrain is easy on the legs, even little guys with little bikes can handle it. If you are feeling really adventurous, historic Savannah, Georgia is only about an hour's drive (go during the off hours) from the island. A taste of the true south, you can stroll by stunning architecture, moss draped oaks and monuments to the town's history. If you go, make time for a cemetery tour in this very haunted city and take lots of pictures. You never know what you might capture on film...

For an attraction that requires no walking, listening, dancing or learning of any kind, visit the Salty Dog in South Beach Marina. Push yourself and read about Jake, the bravest dog south of the Mason-Dixon line, while you drink some fruity concoction or lick up the drips of your ice cream cone.

The ‘70s Turn 50: Celebrating the Decade that Broke the Mold

The Los Angeles Conservancy celebrates the 1970s’ golden anniversary with The ‘70s Turn 50, an exciting initiative exploring the decade’s lasting imprint on L.A. County’s built environment. This yearlong campaign will raise public awareness and educate Angelenos about 1970s architectural and cultural heritage sites in Los Angeles.

Why Fifty Years?

The fifty-year mark is significant in historic preservation. One of the criteria for designation on the National Register of Historic Places states that properties under the age of fifty should not be considered eligible unless they are of “exceptional importance.” While there is no age limit in Los Angeles for local landmark designation, the fifty-year rule remains a benchmark for examining buildings and structures from a period not yet long-gone. It serves as a rallying cry for preservationists anxious to spotlight places that may be at risk.

In 2010, the Conservancy leveraged the 1960s’ fiftieth birthday to shine a light on the growing number of lost or threatened buildings from that decade. Increasing public awareness and pressure helped spare some threatened ‘60s buildings.

The 1966 Fairmont Century Plaza (formerly, the Century Plaza Hotel), which had faced potential demolition, was successfully saved thanks to massive public support and a sensitive redevelopment plan brokered by the Conservancy and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Instilling value for structures not yet in our collective consciousness is half the battle when it comes to preserving them. However, those most in need of attention are in constant flux, moving targets based on the time and changing trends.

Threats to the ‘70s

In the decade since the Conservancy launched its efforts to preserve resources from the 1960s, structures from the 1970s have moved increasingly into the cross-hairs—especially those made with faltering building materials.

Gasoline shortages caused by the 1973 oil embargo quickly curtailed the postwar housing explosion in the United States, a boom that had resulted in the construction of roughly six million housing units in California. Construction shrank as ‘stagflation,’ a term coined in the ‘70s to describe the simultaneous occurrence of slow economic growth and high rates of inflation, gripped the country. The subsequent emphasis on cheap construction materials resulted in buildings that were difficult and expensive to maintain.

1970s buildings also face an increased threat due to a lack of enthusiasm for the aesthetics of the era. The design features and fads iconic to it (shag carpet, faux wood-grain paneling, platform shoes, and macramé) tend to be polarizing ones, and its architecture may be equally difficult for many to embrace.

A Time of Experimentation

Yet in Southern California, the ‘70s marked a time of unprecedented architectural exploration, and the structures left in its wake are some of the finest examples of that creative spirit. Large architectural firms expanded beyond the plain International Style glass box with a variety of building shapes and experimented with glass-skinned exteriors that gave their corporate commissions a simple yet beautiful aesthetic.

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel (John Portman, 1976), the colorful Pacific Design Center (Pelli and Gruen Associates, 1975), and the Federal Aviation Administration Headquarters (César Pelli, Anthony J. Lumsden, DMJM, 1972) exemplify the originality of the decade.

Simultaneously, schools of architecture, such as the newly formed Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA; the School of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; and the radical Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), joined the ranks of the University of Southern California’s established architecture school in producing many of the leading architects of the time. Craig Hodgetts, Robert Mangurian, Thom Mayne, Michael Rotondi, Eric Owen Moss, Eugene Kupper, and Frederick Fisher all taught at these institutions, which provided them the means to experiment despite limited budgets.

Frank Gehry’s 1978 re-design of his Santa Monica residence using cheap and accessible materials was the first project to bring him significant attention. It catapulted the Los Angeles Deconstructivism movement onto the national stage.

Movers and Shakers

On the social and cultural front, the ‘70s were a crucible for movements. The Los Angeles Conservancy, Whittier Conservancy, Pasadena Heritage, and many other preservation and heritage groups were founded in the 1970s in response to the demolition and threatened destruction of historic sites across the County. Similarly, the environmental movement, which gained national attention with landmark legislation, such as the National Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act, solidified in Los Angeles through the efforts of new organizations like TreePeople and the California Conservation Corps.

Begun in the ‘60s, the battle for civil rights continued, now in tandem with and alongside anti-Vietnam War marches and protests. The Chicano Moratorium took place in 1970, imprinting East Los Angeles with the memories of its message, marchers, and casualties. In the following years, both the women’s and LGBTQ+ liberation movements would make their presence known across Southern California, as well. Despite Tom Wolf’s descriptor of the 1970s as the “Me” decade, Los Angeles retained strong elements of civic engagement and activism.

Celebrating the ‘70s

The Conservancy will explore all of this and much more through The ‘70s Turn 50 initiative. Throughout 2020, we will tell the stories and explore the legacies of the 1970s in a variety of ways, including:

Holding a yearlong tour and discussion series at significant ‘70s buildings across the County.

Hosting special tours of buildings and sites of architectural and cultural importance.

Nominating structures from the decade for landmark designations.

Launching a social media campaign and a new ‘70s-centered microsite.

Most importantly, we will build a coalition of fellow organizations eager to join us in this enterprise. We hope that Conservancy members and citizens of Los Angeles County will create a force for valuing and preserving the rich heritage and unique culture of the 1970s.

You fell into a deep sleep that night. All the excitement from telling Jimmy and the fact that you were growing a person inside of you had worn you out. But a humming had woke you up, and it was quick to place who it belonged to. It was just hard pull yourself to wake up.

The smell of his cologne got closer and that’s when you felt his hand gently run over your cheek and into your hair. He waited for you to open your eyes before he said anything.

“Morning, sweetie.”

“Morning.”

“You hungry?” Right before he asked you that is when you could smell something that made your stomach grumble, but you couldn’t place it since his cologne was the top smell you caught.

“Yeah.”

“Good.” The bed dipped down as he sat next to you, grabbing a try from the nightstand. “I made.....pretty much every type of breakfast food.” You giggled softly as you sat up, looking down at the plates.

“We got pancakes, bacon, sausage, fruit, toast and I also brought orange juice and coffee. Don’t worry, it’s decaf.” he added as he set the tray in your lap, the retractable legs holding it up on either side of your legs. “I would have made waffles but I couldn’t find the waffle iron. It’s hiding in a box somewhere, I’ll find it later.”

“Thanks, babe.”

“You’re welcome.” he leaned down, kissing your forehead before moving over to the closet and pulling out a tie.

“You have to go to work?”

“Yeah.” his answer only adding to your disappointment. “But don’t worry...” he turned around, fixing his tie as he smiled at you. “I’m only going in for an hour.” That made you feel a little better.

“Maybe two.” he sneaked in there before kissing you. “But definitely no longer than that. I promise.”

“Okay.” He cupped your cheek, looking into your eyes for a moment with the same admiration he’s had since day one.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” His smile grew before he leaned in, kissing you once more.

“I’ll be back!” he yelled as he left the room and you soon heard his shoes take on the steps and then the front door shut not long after.

“No more than two hours.” you mumbled, telling yourself you can make it two hours alone. No problem. Right?

“Hey!” Sam was pleasantly surprised to see that Charlie was the mystery visitor who was just knocking on the bunkers door. “What are you doing here?” Standing from his seat, he wasted no time in hugging the red head.

“Well, a few weeks back I ran into your guy, Garth.”

“And how’d that go?” Dean couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of the two of them together.

“He’s......interesting.” Sam and Dean shared a glance, a matching smirk on both their faces as they both took a seat. “But anyway....” she pulled her bag off her shoulder and set it on the table, her hands resting on the rough fabric as she looked between the guys.

“He told me about your girl.”

“Y/N?” She gave Dean a nod before opening her bag and pulling out a handful of papers and her laptop.

“What I’ve found is a long shot, but...I was in the neighborhood and figured I’d stop by and say hi anyway.” A half smile pulled at Dean’s lips.

“Well it’s always good to see you, Charlie.” She looked at the elder Winchester with a playful grin and then began shifting through her papers.

“Now, have either of you met her husband?” Dean glanced in Sam’s direction, answering for them both.

“No.”

“Why?” Sam asked right after Dean answered her.

“Just wondering if he seemed like a nice guy or not. Because....” After finding a specific paper she popped open her computer, the link she wanted already up and ready to go.

“When Garth was telling me her problem it reminded me of this story I heard a while back.” she slid a piece of paper to each of the brothers.

“Her name was Sarah Blage. She fell in love with a wealthy business owner, Tom Westin and later on got engaged and moved in with him.” Sam and Dean looked over the article in their hand, seeing a few pictures on there too.

“But, after they got engaged all these weird things started happening to her. A few pictures would fly off the walls, doors slamming shut and at one point the engagement ring around her finger felt as if it had shrunk. She said it was cutting off circulation and her finger had even turned purple.”

“Cursed object?” Sam threw out there, not sure if he was right or not.

“Not exactly.” Confused, both brothers turned their attention to Charlie now. “She finally got the ring off but then a week later she started to see a woman in her house. Clearly a ghost.” Grabbing another sheet of paper, she slid that one to the guys.

“Meet Amanda Sattun. She was previously married to Tom but about a year after getting married to him she fell down the stairs in their California home. She broke her neck, inevitably ending her life.” Sam and Dean thought what everyone else thought.

“Was Tom questioned?” Sam asked, looking up from the picture.

“Yes. Extensively.” That’s when Charlie slid them a newspaper clipping. “But with no solid evidence, they couldn’t be sure if he was responsible or not, so he was let go. Now, I called Sarah and thankfully after a little begging, I got her to talk to me. She confirmed all the things I heard plus some.” Grabbing another piece of paper, Charlie looked down at her handwriting.

“She said that a woman had come to their house and told her that she believes that Sarah’s in danger and going on telling her that Amanda’s death wasn’t an accident, and that’s when she found out that the entire town believed Tom had killed his wife. But she loved him, and she wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, so she questioned him about it later on.”

“How did that go over?” Dean questioned.

“He seemed to have an answer for everything.”

“Of course he did.”

“She added that she saw Amanda constantly around the house and in the end, she says that she believes she saved her life. Because one sleepless night she decided to head downstairs and watch some tv, leaving Tom asleep in bed. But as she hit the stairs....Amanda appeared at the bottom, and she said that she crawled up them, getting right in her face before telling her to look in the nightstand.” Charlie threw up a finger, having the guys hang there while she grabbed another paper.

“Having to look of course, she snuck back in the bedroom and found this in the nightstand.” she slid it between them, both their gazes instantly dropping to it.

“Tom had taken out a two point five million dollar life insurance policy in Sarah’s name making him the beneficiary.”

“Amanda was trying to warn her.” Sam spoke softly, it matching the grim story.

“Yeah.”

“So Tom killed his wife, got the money and the house just to get engaged to Sarah later on and planned on doing the same thing.”

“Pretty much.” Charlie squeaked, the horror of the story filling the air and making everyone a little on edge.

“So, what? You’re thinking that Y/N might be dealing with the same thing?” Sam was questionable, because Charlie was right, it was a long shot.

“I don’t know.” Charlie shrugged as she looked over at Sam. “I don’t know Y/N or her husband, I just figured you weren’t getting anything else so...I gave it a shot.” Sam looked over at his brother, seeing a troubled look on his face.

“Dean, no.”

“What!?”

“You heard Charlie, it’s a long shot. I mean seriously, what are the odds of that being the case?”

“In our life? More than half!”

“Oh, come on...” Sam groaned and as Charlie watched the two bicker back and forth, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She pulled her laptop over and opened a new page.

“Guys!” They both paused, looking over at her. “What’s her husbands name?”

“Jimmy Larz.” Dean answered and without saying anything, she typed away. “Maybe these spirits are trying to warn her, just like Amanda did.”

“What about the kids?”

“What do you mean, what about the kids!? They’re trying to warn her too!”

“Right! With fire and water, that makes sense!”

“Jesus, Sam! Why is it so hard for you to believe that it could be a possibility!?”

“Well for one, I’ve looked up Jimmy and have found nothing! No other marriages, no kids!” Defeated, Dean finally backed off. “I’m sorry, Dean. I know you want some kind of answer, but....this isn’t it.”

“Actually...” Charlie’s voice caught their attention again, their eyes locking on her. “Dean may be right.”

“What?” Curious, both brothers moved to stand behind Charlie, looking at the computer screen.

“Sam, you were right, there’s not much on Jimmy, but...” she tapped a few keys. “I looked up suspicious deaths where the husband could have been involved and I found this.”

“Distraught husband mourns the loss of wife and son.” Dean read aloud. “Steven Kline says he left his wife and son on the deck of the cruise ship while he went to grab them a drink and when he came back, they were gone. He alerted the ships security and a search was immediately put into motion, but the pair were never found.” The three of them looked at the picture of the deceased woman and boy and the picture right next to it was the husband/father, but it wasn’t a great shot. He was clearly upset, his face in his hands while police officers stood around him.

“What about that one.” Sam pointed to another link at the bottom of the page. He saw a little girl wearing a purple dress and it reminded him of the girl you’d been seeing. Charlie clicked on the link, Dean reading this one out loud too.

“Husband and father being questioned in connection to house fire.” Charlie scrolled down the page, passed all the ads to get to the actual story.

“Kenneth Adams claims to have come home to his house ablaze which held his wife and daughter inside. After questioning him, Nashville police have cleared him of any involvement.” Dean cocked his head to the right before straightening in his spot.

“Well, that would explain the boy spitting up water and flame girl.”

“But it’s two different men, Dean.” Sam grumbled.

“Well lets see.” Charlie spoke up, hoping to put an end to the guys arguing.

She pulled up the photo of Kenneth, the husband who came home to his house on fire and then looked for a better picture of Steven, though none of them were great but she made do with what she had.

“They could be.....”

“Or it could be two men that look a lot alike.” Dean glared at his brother for a moment but then rested his hand on Charlie’s shoulder.

“Why don’t you pull up Jimmy.”

“Kay.” As Charlie went back to searching your husband Sam brought up what he found on him before hand.

“Look, Dean, Jimmy is a CEO of a big company, has been for at least ten years.”

“Yeah, and where was he before that?” Sam wanted to push his point that this couldn’t be what they were looking for, but after his brother asked him that he slowly realized he found nothing on Jimmy before his employment with the company he was at. “That’s what I thought.”

“Uh...guys.” Both pairs of eyes dropped down to the red head but then quickly went to the computer screen. “I’m not the only one seeing this right?”

The images in front of the three of them were horrifying and brought on a major uneasy feeling in all of them, but Dean was quick to push passed it, snatching his keys from his pocket and heading for the door.

“Sam, call Y/N and tell her to pack a bag! Just the essentials!”

“Dean...”

“Just do it! Tell her I’m on my way!”
