So I wanted to post this because, among other reasons, I find the possible implications of this so funny and interesting.

A more thorough explanation of everything under the cut, but TL;DR: Suki wants to avoid embarrassing Toph in front of everyone and only has a panicked moment to come up with something.

(This is kinda a cheesy move, but please reblog this because I really want to see people's thoughts on this. Also, feel free to use this as a prompt or inspiration for art or a fic or anything.)

So, anyone seeing this will likely know the context here, but let me give a quick summary. Toph, who can't swim, falls into the water. Sokka yells that he'll save her, but Suki jumps in first and saves her. Toph kisses her as thanks, thinking it's Sokka, Suki corrects her, Toph wants to drown in embarrassment.

Now the main "what if" regarding this scene (primarily due to Tokka shippers such as myself) is that Sokka jumps in instead of Suki. But this one is a much smaller change, yet offers just as much, if not more, potential plot divergence.

Toph misses the cheek and kisses her lips, leaving a mark. Suki still clarifies the situation and Toph is still embarrassed. (Suki and Toph don't notice or clean off the mark because, frankly, they have more important things going on.) They return to the crew on the shore and someone, really anyone, asks something along the lines of "what happened?" Suki and Toph get a little nervous thinking they saw the kiss, then Suki has a momentary panic attack upon seeing the lipstick and suddenly has a dilemma on her hands.

Already, this scenario is hilarious, but how it develops from there is what really tickles my brain. So what does Suki do?

A) Tell (mostly) the truth and say that Toph thought it was 'someone else.'

B) Say it was an accident in the churning waves.

C) Panic and say that she and Toph confessed to each other in order to save Toph from embarrassment.

All of these could be interesting, so let's explore them a little.

A) The "Truth"

"Well, she thought I was someone else, and she was so thankful, and... well..."

So this opens the most shipping doors because it could implant the question 'who did she think it was?' into everyone's minds. However, Sokka did yell out pretty clearly, so I'd say you'd have to change a bit more for this to go any other way than everyone figuring out that Toph likes Sokka. Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing, since this would create some drama and put the ball firmly in Sokka's court.

B) It was the waves!

"Oh yeah, the sea is pretty rough. It happened to push her into me at just the right time and uh... Y'know..."

With this one, it's easy enough for everyone to just go 'if you say so' warily and move on, business as usual. However, with a close call in front of everyone like that, it's harder for this to get swept under the rug. Suki actively hid Toph's crush on her boyfriend(?) to save Toph's feelings. What now? How does Toph's dynamic with Suki change? Does Toph have two crushes now? Does Suki now feel inferior or less qualified to be with Sokka because Toph is actually traveling with him and is more powerful? I see this leading to more unspoken, slow-burn, internal strife.

C) Sorry Sokka...

"I- Y'see- It's like... We'remadlyinlove."

Silly? Yes. Hilarious? Yesser. Convoluted? It's the yessiest! There are any number of haphazard stories Suki could concoct on the spot. They've been romantic pen pals for years. They met on a diplomatic trip and hit it off. They had a stunning realization when they held each other just then. Whatever the story, the end result is the same; Suki is now fake-dating Toph.

With this one, it can evolve and change in any number of ways. It's my personal favorite if only for the comedy of it. Until the situation resolves (which can be a LONG ASS TIME) it's a situation rife with comedic, dramatic, and romantic potential.

“Y’know, I’m starting to think you have a thing for women in uniform.” Toph said, with a shit-eating grin. “I mean, Sukki, now me… probably other cases we don’t know about…”

“Pfft, that’s totally inaccurate.” Sokka instantly replied, only making her snicker even more.

“Oh, yeah? Where am I wrong, then?”

“I have a thing for people in uniform, thank you very much.” She lifted her middle finger when he said that, still keeping an amused expression nonetheless. “But you know what’s better than in uniform?”

“Sheesh, if you say something cheesy like ‘out of uniform’ or so…”

Silence fell, and Toph may not be able to see his expression, but there was no need either; she could almost sense the pout on Sokka’s face. Silence fell, but it didn’t last very long as a couple of minutes later they were both laughing.

“So you don’t want me to say it.” He then said, absent-mindedly tapping the part of her armor that covered her right shoulder.

“Nah.” She agreed, cupping his face between her hands, an easy task given how Toph was currently sitting on his lap. “But… let’s stop pretending we don’t wanna put it into practice, though.” Those last words were accompanied with a hungry, deep kiss, so intense there was no way to doubt about the intent behind it.

Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)

My Favorite Ships:

• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3

• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!

• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3

• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3

• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!

Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:

• Zutara - A pretty good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do occasionally seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer seeing/writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!

• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!

• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭

• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3

• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.

• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.

Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):

• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!

• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!

• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!

• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!

• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!

• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.

• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.

• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!

(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)

• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.

Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!

• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3

• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!

• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!

• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!

• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!

• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.

• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!

• Hakoda and Zuko - I thrive in this section of the fandom!! They have exactly one (1) frame together in canon, but I ADORE Dadkoda adopting Zuko! Something about it is just so wholesome and cute!!! My very very fav ATLA fics are this trope!!#LetHakodaBitchSlapOzaiAndAdoptZuko2024

• Uncle Iroh and Zuko - God they make me so ALSNDKSNXNCNSNSNXNX, y’know?

• The Gaang as a whole - Obvious I know, but I really do love them😭They all bonded sm and I adore their little family!! I eat up fanart of the Gaang cuddling like CANDY omg. And yes Suki is included in the Gaang because WHY WOULDN’T SHE BE!

Who's your favorite Beifong? And who do you ship them with?

First of all, I already love you to the 'yue' and back for this ♡ Ty, I'm virtually holding your hand rn!

"Who's your favorite Beifong?" Now that.. requires a huge @$$ long answer, babe! Grab a coffee and seat down. ☕️ — I have three different answers to this, organized by category, because I can't simply just choose one Beifong, so.. ◇ My favorite based on "emotional attachment" is definitely Suyin (kinda of an unpopular choice). I simply can't help but love every aspect of her, she's so beautiful, bright and collected - I love how against all odds she overcame her traumas the healthiest way she could, rebuilt her whole life, never gave up on reconnecting with the people she loved and missed after all, etc. I have an immense amount of respect for her - she's the personification of growth, maturity and forgiveness. And I love that for her for many reasons! Her adult self reminds me a bit of Sokka in a way, that probably helped to establish my "emotional attachment" towards her as well! ◇ My favorite based on "complexity and strength" would be obviously Lin. Lin is the character I validate and understand the most too, I enjoy analyzing her whole story and personality. I'm a Psychology student, so it makes sense to me that I loved her instantly and so much (apart from being a Toph seed), she was presented to us as the typical tough character ofc but I was amazed how many layers she turned out to have, how profound and complicated her traumas, choices and path turned out to be. I love and respect Lin for reasons that are completely different from Su (they are completely opposites). Lin's psychological strength (physical too, ofc), courage and endlessly emphaty always get me. I would fight anyone just to protect her! ◇ And of course, my number one girl.. Ultimate Favorite in the entire franchise.. the ORIGINAL Beifong; TOPH!! I don't even think I need to explain myself on this one, do I?? Everything I listed about her daughters comes from Toph Beifong and even her imperfections are kinda perfect to me, she is one of the most brilliant characters in the franchise hand down. In fact I believe their daughters inherited a lot of Toph's values, beliefs and characteristics. They are her legacy in a way, probably part of the reason I love them so much too. But anyways.

That's my favorite Beifong; TophLinSu!♡

"And who do you ship them with?" That's piece of cake! For Su; Suyin/Baatar Sr. ◇ For Lin; Linzin & Kyalin, maybe Linzumi too — I do think Lin & Tenzin are soulmates who could never be though (This is actually a can of worms, 'cause I have A LOT to say regarding this entire ship!). ◇ And for Toph; Tokka yesterday, Tokka today and Tokka for always!♡ I can't actually picture Toph with anyone else, for some reason. I tried (with her other love interests and all).. But It's just not it for me. Kanto we've never even seen & Satoru was more of a simp - nothing against it but it kills the mood for me that he's a fanboy who'd spend their whole relationship praising her & kissing the ground she steps on, not into that for Toph (or any human being) in a relationship. — While with Sokka (even tho it was just a childhood crush & he was a bit older) I think they were a perfect match for a future relationship; They were opposites in the right amount, but also pretty similar (in terms of sense of humor and some values). I love how they completed each other in their dynamic, how Sokka was so kind, supportive and understanding - they had a real profound bond and he was always offering to help her out (if needed) or trying to protect her, even tho she hated to be treated like that; he was her exception. And Toph genuinely respected him (jokes apart) & would consider his opinions, even embracing his stupid ideas. It was simple and sweet. Not to mention the fact that Sokka would never pick fights with her (not that I remember), whenever Katara would ask him to intervene in their fights he'd be like "Nah, leave me out of this" and I do think that that's what intrigued Toph, he would listen to her & validate her feelings since Day 1. Then we cut to TLOK; at Yakone's trial when Sokka is giving that sentenced speech and start praising Toph for developing the Metalbending skill by herself; his facial expression immediately changes to something more affectionate (genuinely smiling at her), then Old Toph telling Korra about when she taught Aang earthbending and feeling the need to mention what happened to Sokka that day (should've been insignificant, but she kept that memory from that day) and then Suyin & Lin's small details or characteristics that were related to Sokka in ATLA (Like their usage of adapted metal swords to fight, Su's collection of meteorites, how Sokka was always praising Toph for inventing the Metalbending and later Su building a whole city out of it where Toph's achievement would be praised and immortalized for once and all, not to mention Su & some members of the family looking like Sokka, I'm pretty sure that was purposely done by the creators in a way to keep Sokka's design, idk & it makes me the happiest that it was done in the Beifong family). It's impossible not to acknowledge the impact Sokka had on Toph, they truly loved each other and loved being around each other. Romantically or not, canon or not - it's impossible for me not to ship them.♡

for the relationship ask game - 11 (Barry & Cisco), 34, & 47

11. [Barry and Cisco] have just stumbled into a fairy ring, and they've forgotten they ever knew each other! What happens now?

My mind went right to that episode of s3 where Barry got amnesia and fell in love with Iris all over again. In a world with Barrisco endgame...he'd be falling for Cisco (all over again, ofc, because he had a crush on Cisco the whole time in this version of events). And since both of them lose their memories, Cisco would be gushing about Barry too.

But of course they'd both try to disguise it as "friendly banter," because neither of them wanna scare off the cute guy who seems to really like them (platonically, they think. Oh, these lovable idiots).

Caitlin and Iris realize that these two will get their memories back by kissing. And both of them know that Barry and Cisco have been crushing on each other for ages, and are still flirting now, but...how to convince them to go for it?

So shenanigans ensue, in which Caitlin and Iris try to set them up, except those plans go a bit awry. But also, in a way, those plans still succeed, because Barrisco fall more in love with each other until one day they go for it and kiss. And all is well!

(Except they "forgot" where the fairy circle was, so the following week, Caitlin and Iris get stuck there 😉)

fanfic relationships ask game!

Okay AtLA/Tokka fans, help me decide which WIP/idea to focus on because I have way too many. If any of these tickle your fancy, let me know!

WIP #1: Cactus Juice! Young adult Toph and Sokka (who is newly single) go on vacation with the rest of the gang. Shenanigans ensue [tone: fun, lighthearted, buckets of innuendo]

WIP #2: Canon divergent AU sequel to my fic 'As Long As You Need Me', in which Toph chooses Sokka and happiness. This fic would be set years in the future and be told from the perspective of Suyin, the second youngest of five [tone: probably mostly lighthearted but with some bittersweet moments]

WIP #3: When Toph finds herself pregnant [with Lin], she worries about what might happen if her child is blind and not an earthbender. Sokka makes it his mission to help her with this and they fall madly in love [tone: romaaaantic]

Idea #1: 'Kiss me like it's the first time' -- A series of moments over the years, starting with older versions of Toph and Sokka with each scene going deeper into the past [tone: probably lighthearted but could contain some angst]

Idea #2: Strictly canon-compliant story where Toph and Sokka get together in their late 30s but can't figure their shit out. Just another Suyin origin story [tone: extreeeeme angst]

Idea #3: I saw a list of prompts a while back and I had an idea to smoosh them all into a single fic. Something something injury/coma; I haven't really fleshed this one out XD [tone: probably mixed]

Idea #4: Before Toph decides to join the gaang during the war, a mysterious blue box appears in her garden... [tone: action and adventure!] [obv not Tokka XD]

Other misc ideas: 'Ruins of the Empire' fix-it fic, full novelization of AtLA (yeah, I know that one's batshit insane), AtLA except different regions speak unique languages (I saw this on a tumble post actually; would love to do something with it)

Honestly it’s not surprising that Zutar@ manages to fuck up and be annoying to ships that commit the crime of ‘getting in their way’. But it also treats the ships they claim to like along with their own as garbage as well.

I’m talking of course about Taang and Sukka.

I genuinely like Taang myself. A lot actually. At points it’s even my favourite Atla ship.

But you can really really tell when someone doesn’t ship it because they like both Toph and Aang as characters and find their dynamics and backgrounds and even potential spiritual links interesting: but are instead using it as an excuse to get Aang out of the way.

Their barely hidden contempt for Aang especially when they spout tripe like ‘Toph wouldn’t take any crap from him’ . All while posting a fic scenario which has Aang, someone who genuinely tries to understand people most of the time and even has a genuine religious philosophy: instead seem to have an understanding about friendship or forgiveness more akin to a three year old. Or like has shit like momtara and dadko scenarios (excuse me while I throw up) where he sneaks off to date Toph as if he had to ask these KIDS his PEERS his FRIENDS for permission in their deranged nuclear family take on the gaang. Yeah it was a ‘joke’ but they actually think of the gaang as working that way. Fucking straightest fandom imaginable frankly. Can’t think of dynamics in any other way without making some kids into the mother and father.

Because to them Katara and Zuko are 40 to Aang’s 12 I guess. Sure. 👌 Zuko who is ultimately and obviously the least mature member of the gaang. Katara who enjoys having fun and needs to be reconnected to being a kid again and gets that from Aang in the first episode. Sure. Sure. They can’t even fucking have Katara and Aang be the equals and friends they are.

Overall it really makes them show their ass when they attempt to spew out how much better it would be for Aang to be with Toph and this happens. It’s extremely frustrating trying to find Taang content sometimes because for every genuinely good piece you find there’s like five or more of this utter garbage. It leaves me cold honestly. I’m not sure how a genuine Taang shipper could not have at least some contempt for the louder parts of the Zk fandom.

Sukka doesn’t get it much better, though at least they don’t seem to hate one or more of its members. I have to admit I’m not really a fan of Sukka myself. I don’t hate it. The opposite actually. I don’t generally have any strong feelings one way or the other. It’s perfectly inoffensive but I’m not really into it.

But it’s kind of amazing that Zk fans try to say it’s ‘the only good canon ship’ when they make basically next to no art or fics of it apart from being heavily heavily in the background or in group shots.

It’s not the only ‘group ship’ fandom guilty of this mind you. Not even just in this fandom. Hell, arguably and oddly not even the only group that does this with Sukka.

But it’s fucking hilarious how full of shit they are. They don’t make any actual content of it! They don’t actually care for it any more than I do! It just doesn’t get in the way so they leave it alone except to use it to make posts to shit on the (lbr more interesting) Kataang and Maiko. Wild. I mean I don’t care for Tokka much either which sometimes gets thrown in as Maiko and Kataangs group: but at least people seem to actually and genuinely like that ship and have made content for it.

I just sometimes think about when Sokka says ‘You talk too much’ before kissing Suki: which in context isn’t anything to be mad at, clearly. But we all know it would have gotten Aang eviscerated by them if he’d said it to Katara in the exact same context.

Also ZKs would be crowing with glee that ‘See!!! Zuko can’t stand anything coming out of her rancid mouth!!! She’s so abusive!!! He kisses her to shut her up!!!!’ If Zuko had said it to Mai. You’re not slick. You’re not clever. Everyone can see the truth. Sukka is a prop to you and nothing more.

Leave Taang and Sukka out of your ship posts when it’s clear to everyone with a brain cell that you don’t care anything about them. They deserve better. Or at least Taang does. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a single person for whom Sukka is the ultimate ride or die OTP. But they probably exist you know? It’s a decently sized fandom after all. They’re unfortunately probably buried by all your garbage hot takes. And even if I don’t care for it, you’re probably fucking up what could be a fun experience for them.

I don't usually do requests unless I'm in the mood for them. (Tokka is the most irresistible.) I'm afraid I'm a little tapped out on Kataang at the moment.

Right now my #1 project is a 100-page Tokka comic that I started years ago and am finally going to finish. If you're interested in that, you can see behind the scenes posts on my main blog, Maivry. On Tuesdays I post an ATLA screenshot redraw. I may post extra fanart as well - ATLA or otherwise - but I'm still getting back into the drawing habit.

What makes you prefer Yukka and Tokka over S/ukka? I often get annoyed when some ATLA fans try to say they were the best canon couple, considering how Suki had the least amount of depth amongst the main cast. Even Yue and Jet were expanded upon, despite having less screen-time.

you gave one of my reasons! one is that I do find suki bland in terms of her not getting a lot to her character, no flaws or anything. I kind of get it since she wasn’t meant to be a character who appeared more than once. and she is a great inspirational character but I find it hard to ship her with someone like sokka who has a lot more depth

another is the complete lack of development. “best developed canon ship” WHEREEEE. they’re the definition of background ship. people ignore that sokka forgot about suki multiple times really😭 the timing of their kisses and even the cheek kisses were unrealistic imo

the main thing is simply chemistry though. I won’t pick apart scenes right now but yeahh I can’t envision anything in the future for them either. they just give me friendship vibes. ship what you want but that’s my unpopular opinion (although I feel it isn’t as unpopular as everyone thinks it is), yukka, tokka and tyluki supremacy>

19. One person stopping a kiss to ask “Do you want to do this?”, only to have the other person answer with a deeper, more passionate kiss. hmmm... really testing me on other ships. I love it! Will admit I’ve never been a huge fan of Tokka, but not opposed to the idea of them. I guess we’ll see if that actually comes through on my writing or not.

There was always this undeniable connect that Sokka and Toph had. Though, it never manifested in anything romantic, until tonight.

Sokka had come over to Toph’s apartment in Republic City to see how she was holding up after Yakone bloodbent everyone in the trial. And what had started out as a friendly hug turned into a kiss when Toph’s sightless eyes gazed up at Sokka’s blue orbs with affection behind them.

Her eyes drew him in, and before he knew it, his lips lightly touched Toph’s surprisingly soft lips. She wasn’t pulling away from him, but she also wasn’t responding to his advance.

A second before he pulled away, her lips responded to his sweet kiss and melded perfectly to his. This kiss that Sokka had thought about doing more times than he cared to admit was more than he could have dreamed of. Where Toph’s exterior was hard and abrasive, her kisses were gentle and soothing. 

Before he thought to go further, the counsilman pulled away from her heavenly lips and asked, “Do you want to do this?” 

Instead of her pulling away and punching him in the arm like he expected, she wrapped her arms round his neck and pushed his back onto the seat cushions of the sofa and fervently kissed him, with her legs straddling his waist.

Hello Anon! You know, Tokka is not one of my top atla ships but I’m going to embrace this opportunity to push myself to write something I normally wouldn’t, so thank you for that. I was only going to do one, but as I started writing I realized both fit for what I was envisioning, so I hope you enjoy!

33. An unexpected kiss that shocks the one receiving it.

18. Teasing kisses where one person blows air into the other’s mouth and runs away.

Prior to meeting the Avatar, Toph’s primary source of happiness was in her bending. Not only was it her way of “seeing” the world, but the moments where she was surrounded by her element, pummeling rocks into the ground, were some of the happiest moments of her childhood.

After joining the Avatar’s group, Toph found happiness in new moments, moments she never thought possible. She loved going with Katara to the Fancy Lady Day Spa, choosing to embrace her feminine side for herself, not because her parents forced her to. She enjoyed teaching Aang earthbending, and found the joy mixed with pride every time he mastered a new move. 

After the war, Toph often caught herself smiling for no reason other than the fact that she was content. Whether she was enjoying tea with Gramps, harassing Zuko’s council, or pounding her metalbending students into the ground, she realized she was happier than she ever dreamed she could be.

As much as Katara teased her for it, Toph refused to admit that any significant part of her joy came from the fact that Sokka was now single.

Once Sokka and Suki started dating, Toph willed her crush to go away. She did not enjoy feeling like a lovesick puppy everytime he complimented her, or led her around, or-

So Toph got over him. At least, that’s what she told herself. 

Now though, he was single, had been for several months in fact, and  visiting her metalbending academy, and it was taking every bit of her willpower not to say something stupid. 

(Though, she reminded herself, she could never top Zuko’s incredibly hilarious confession of his feelings for Katara.)

“Toph?” Sokka asked, and she mentally cursed, realizing he had asked her a question.

“Sorry, what’s up?” Toph crossed her arms over her chest, hoping she sounded nonchalant. She tilted her head, picking up an odd shift in Sokka’s heartbeat.

“I uh, Well. I was wondering if- Well..”

Toph held her breath, waiting for him to finish whatever thought he was trying to force out. She was shocked when he stopped rambling and instead, softly pressed his lips against hers. Too shocked to kiss him back, she stood tfrozen until Sokka pulled away.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have- I should have asked if you-”

Toph cut him off, grabbing his tunic and pulling him back down to her. She kissed him deeply, standing on her tiptoes to pull him closer. 

“So,” Sokka said when they came up for air, “is it safe to say you’d be willing to go on a date with me?”

Toph punched his arm softly. “Of course, idiot.”

“Hey!” He said, but it sounded like he was smiling. Toph grinned and pulled him down as if to kiss him again, but this time she blew a puff of air in his mouth. As he stood spluttering she ran away. 

“Pick me up at 6!” Toph called over her shoulder. She felt a little bad for fleeing, but she needed time to sort through her feelings, to allow herself to enjoy the fact that yes, Sokka kissed her.

Besides, she had to get ready for their date.
