introducing - our tonsi flag ( len sitelen pi kulupu tonsi ! ) 'tonsi' is a toki pona word that, roughly, means "a gender experience not fully described by 'mije' [man] or 'meli' [woman]." context + design explanation under the cut 🌈❤️

🗣❗️ : toki pona is a minimalist conlang, which this post assumes very basic knowledge of. if youd like, u can read the wikipedia page (linked above), or this article from the atlantic, "Toki Pona: A Language With a Hundred Words."

some background on the creation of 'tonsi' - toki pona started development around 2001, and was 1st published in 2014, with 120 "canon" words - including the 2 gender words, meli & mije. however , toki pona is a living language, + words come about as the community needs them - the community came together to create 'tonsi' in a grassroots effort c. 2019 to fill a lexical gap that existed for describing ppl who fell outside the meli-mije duality.

etomologically, the word is from mandarin 同志 'tóngzhì' (meaning "comrade", & commonly used to mean gay / LGBTQ - though "tonsi" itself is generally agreed refer to gender.) some people use it exclusively to mean "nonbinary / genderqueer" , but expanded usage to also include all trans & gnc people (who choose to identify as tonsi) is very common, + is a definition i endorse ( & created the flag in mind with ! ) the word was officialized as an essential word in 2021 w./ the release of the toki pona dictionary

the sitelen pona ( logographic / hieroglyph writing system ) glyph for 'tonsi'

as for the design & symbolism of the flag - the central blue symbol represents the sitelen pona glyph for tonsi (shown above), in the blue of the toki pona logo - the 3 segments (colored pink, green, and purple) were roughly inspired by colors on the trans, gq, & nonbinary flags - as a whole, the flag symbolizes the way the tonsi community unites people of all different gender experiences & primary-language terms.

toki pona philosophy is all about capturing universal concepts in a way that allows for clear and simple communication, and gender variance is absolutely a universal concept. tonsi is a beautiful + necessary word, & with this flag, i wanted 2 focus not on granular inclusions of which groups fall under tonsi , but rather the unity the term presents, and how it allows us to unite by what we have in common , rather than pick over the terminology we choose.

to my knowledge, no one else has made an effort 2 create a dedicated tonsi flag, but reception to having one has been positive thru the toki pona speakers ive shown the design - much thnx to the people on discord who gave their thoughts, as well as @epikulupu for consulting - sina ale li epiku mute a ❤️ ( ill also be posting a lili version of this post on r/tokipona soon + will add a link when i do 🌈 )

so i tried to tokipona-fy the names of the hermits

⚠️I am still a beginner in toki pona, so if anything here violates the language/phonics rules, IM SORRY I tried⚠️

Under the cut is a brief explanation of toki pona and how the words and letters are pronounced, and reblogged after it is a list I've made (with some credited help) of each hermit, their tokipona-fied name, their combined sign, and an explanation of why I chose what I chose.

For those of you who don't know what toki pona is, it's a minimalist language with only 120 official words and ~135 widespread words. It's got only 14 letters and 14 phonemes (sounds). For comparison, the english language has roughly 1 million words, 26 letters, and 44 phonemes.

Toki pona does not have the english letters b, c, d, f, g, h, q, r, v, x, y, or z. You may now be realizing how difficult (impossible) it would be to mimic a name like Bdubs in this language. Not only do B and D not exist in toki pona, but the U here makes the "uh" sound, a sound that ALSO isnt in toki pona.

Each letter in toki pona makes one, and only one, sound. J is pronounced like english Y as in "yikes". A is pronounced like "fAr", E is pronounced like "bEt", I sounds like "whEEE!" (or according to some like "bIt"), O is pronounced like "Or", and U is pronounced like "mOOn".

In addition, there's several specific phonics rules for toki pona. You can't end any syllable with a consonant other than N (although vowels are allowed) and the phonomes Wu, Wo, Ji, and Ti are illegal.

Toki pona uses 14 latin letters (a,e,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,s,t,u,w), but it also has a separate glyphic form called sitelen pona.

For each hermit, I'm going to give their tokipona-fied name, a combined glyph, the name of the words in the glyph, a meaning for those words, and then an explanation for Everything.

okay so. this part is here because the rain world fandom and toki pona fandom have (seemingly) very little overlap, and i want as many people as possible to understand this steaming pile of nonsense. so for this i am going to assume you know nothing about either rain world or toki pona.

on panel 2, spearmaster (the purple one) is trying to participate, but does not have a mouth, so they can only moan unintelligibly.

on panel 3, saint (the green one) says the sitelen pona glyph for "wawa", which in toki pona means something like "strength" or "energy". saint can speak a glyph because they are more powerful than the other slugcats.

on panel 4, rivulet (the blue one) is about to be ascended (aka killed but harder) by saint. in other words, saint is about to commit an act of violence.

oh also! since you're here, at some point during production i wanted to let this comic fade from my memory so i could review it with fresh eyes, so here's the thing i drew to cover this comic so i didnt accidentally look at it!

on top is the latin and sitelen pona for "len". its root definition refers to clothing, and other definitions come from aspects of said root definition. definitions such as "cloth", "covering", and "layer of privacy". guess which definition is being used in this context!

on bottom is saint. saint has a long tongue that they use to grapple around. i just think they're neat!

OK so the first thing you gotta know is that all three of these are the daughters of the Unreaper, the save I had that I have apparently completely lost in the reset and had never published to Sporepedia. I am still pondering what this means diegetically for all of them but it's relevant

The Unreaper were my first experiment into the Murder Herbivore – they were a Harmony empire but a completely unearned one. They also had the traits of strangely oriented arms, deer antlers, and their starfarer foremost the Omnipotent had a strong penchant for throwing herself repeatedly into war, forgoing assembling a fleet and abusing her respawn mechanic to one-man terrorize worlds

The Harp is a Zealot empire of antlered, winged pack hunters. The Harpy have gone red-red-green-green and as a species have had a long, long history of being fucking annoying. The mechanics of their pack dynamics are not well understood and the Harp is not forthcoming, but those packs/flocks/swarms have uncanny capability to coordinate (especially for the sake of mobbing some motherfucker), and no individual Harpy has been documented very extensively – their recording of history is deeply collectivist, and individual Harpy do not usually have names or stable epithets. They are somewhat oddballs among the Way of Spode – they lack many of the hardliner tendencies and have only erratically and mostly superficially adopted the Galactic standard practices of Spode, even having different practices around prosletyzation, as enthusiastic as they are about it – the Harp places almost no value on prosletyzation as beneficial to the recipient but instead treats convincing and being convinced as a ritual act in and of itself.

Some of the Harp's oddnesses are best exemplified in the Taking, the intervention that ended the Amahani-Aepox war. The Amahani Empire was the Harp's first interstellar contact, and was also a theocracy under Spode – the Amahani Empire and the Harp were close allies for a long time, and when the Amahani began to lose the conflict with the Aepox, the Harp was a frontline negotiator, and freely welcomed refugees. Eventually, though, the Amahani were pushed back to their home world, and followed there. The Harp officially annexed the remains of the Amahani rather than let them be destroyed – via induction of planet-wide religious frenzy by way of the Zealot superweapon.

In the time since, Harpy delegations sent to mend relations after that breach of the Galactic code have integrated extremely effectively, especially in Chance empires.

The Ikka'vetu, the First Step Unto the Land, are omnivores with much less pack definition than the New Transcendent and certainly than the Harp. I am going to say more about them later but basically they are also a Harmony empire which annoys me bc I wanted them to be Life rn I am going to TTRPG

The Empire of New Transcendence are my longest save and a weird one. They didn't come from one guy but two – after meeting a hostile creature, my herbivorous guys developed a symbiotic bond with an in-game Maxis-created creature that was much more statted for attack. The Senta (me-created) and the Kakuta (this is derived from "Kowkutter" which is the name of the Spore creatures in question but that isn't a diegetic name in The Lore) proceeded to develop side by side as a societal unit under the banner of New Transcendence. They r for all intents and purposes one society. New Transcendence is a Harmony empire, and does as such very much value The Significance Of All Life In The Universe, but being a Spore empire, they are not, despite this, antiviolent.

The infrastructure this society does build produces the crew of the Great Star of New Transcendence. They are a very expected bunch, consisting of the commonplace unit of Senta and Kakuta and also coming very much From Power. Releasing a bunch of very questionable graduates into space proceeds to cause several problems as pride and greed immediately show themselves as core motivators with more than one fatal result. But their pride too is affected by the Harmony philosophy – they dabble eventually in uplifting the Flowerdrifter Fairies... who come into their own as a Force empire and proceed to demand the eradication of another empire. The Great Star, which is functionally a warlord merc, initially accepts the bribe – but the reason is a new low of petty and unjustifiable, and the rush of completion immediately gives way to horror not just at this but at all the terrorism and murder they'd committed before. Shaken, the Great Star commits to a vow of peace.

ok first thank you for this epic ask. my answer is long so it's under the cut.

I'm currently primarily learning Russian. I am sorta learning Swahili, but I haven't come any far yet.

I'm also continuing to learn french, but I'm already pretty good at french so it's pretty much just reading stuff in french.

I'm sorta learning northern Sami or Sami languages (multiple), but I haven't gotten far.

I'm not sure which languages I want to be fluent in. I guess french, I'm definitely not on a C1 level yet but I know a lot so it's probably the easiest. But I just want to take things as they come a bit. Sami languages (probably northern Sami has most materials) are a candidate, because decolonization and stuff, plus it's a new language family to me which interests me a lot. Though I'll likely try one I know people who speak.

but for learning in general I am considering/currently learning:

- Arabic (maybe Egyptian)

- Swahili

- French

- Russian

- Chinese (probably mandarin)

- Urdu

- Sámi language (unsure which)

- Norwegian sign language

- international sign language

- Usamerican sign language (ASL)

- Thai

And of course I'm probably gonna update this list. (metaphorically speaking, not physically this list in this post)

Where I learn:

So for french I learned primarily in a classroom setting, but honestly that has left me with very weak like audio processing for french.

For Russian I've been using Duolingo which is pretty good, though as people talk about I don't understand the grammar so if I want to use it formally I'm probably gonna diversify. (not sure what I'll do yet)

For Swahili I'm using language transfer. But I struggle to motivate myself to do language transfer lessons. They're primarily audio based and I'm genuinely addicted to music so I'm not always in the mood.

I've also used Polygloss, which is an image description game type thing where you get feedback on your language skills from other users. I would probably recommend this one if it sounds at all interesting to you. This has many languages btw, even toki Pona.

I've used drops but that app fuckings sucks ass. It's difficult to remember stuff in complete isolation. It's like the opposite of reading wikipedia in the target language.

For Thai I've used "Thai drill", which seems pretty good, I haven't gotten far with thai though because I've focused on other languages.

I've used lingodeer the short time I learned japanese, I've heard it's supposed to be really good for that.

I also like using texts, for Russian I've used a lot of wikipedia, trying to just read articles in Russian and see what I understand. For french I've used magazines and lemonde. For Sami I've used just the regular news.

I've tried chatting apps for language learning but I haven't really stuck to them too much so idk if that's for me. I think people like those though.

I've tried YouTube for Norwegian sign language and I find myself less likely to use youtube for language learning, but it definitely helps with getting access to resources when there's little.

Also miscellaneous websites. For Norwegian sign language, Russian and French I've used websites and it's helped at least a bit.

Translation services are essential! Like yeah don't just put everything through translation, but if you need a specific word or want to check your grammar it can be very helpful. I use it a lot in french.

On whether to learn Norwegian that depends what you value.

Some options are: novelty (different language family? unfamiliar writing system?), easiness (similar? are there apps? are there complex conjugations?), practical use (can you watch tv in the language? do you know anyone who speaks it?), different culture (will it give you access to a world radically different to your own?), decolonization (is it a colonized language?)

But personally I'm inclined to say yeah please learn my language. I can recommend resources and help teach you if you chose it, so the easiness is high (plus it's on Duolingo). the practical use, though lowered by the fact that most Norwegians speak english, is decent because it's easy to access free books online in Norwegian, plus news (that may be different like with Palestine - the free national news report does not have to be approved by isnotreal). And in general Norway values freedom of speech. The easiness is raised by you speaking English, and Norwegian also doesn't gender anything depending on subject's gender (unlike french), only grammatical gender, and you can choose between 2 & 3 genders. For novelty it's probably not that interesting though. For decolonization it's a colonizer language, Norway colonized a part of Sápmi and forced them to speak like us, no one colonized Norway. wait actually there might be more than Sápmi? idk I found this about Denmark-Norway, it might be wrong to pin it on just the Danes even though they had the upper hand historically, idk (there was centralized royal rule based in Copenhagen in Denmark). But yeah that last part idk if it really matters, it's not immoral to learn a "evil" language (of any kind), it's more that I consider it extra moral to learn a colonized language. (I wouldn't necessarily consider Norwegian evil but you get what I'm getting at).

For languages I wouldn't learn, honestly there's not many. I'm skeptical towards learning more languages like french because it's hyper gendered & usually non-binary excluding, but I think Spanish for example is one of them and it's so widely spoken it's kinda worth it.

The most difficult thing for me when learning a language, I guess staying consistent. I only have like one perfect month on Duolingo, and for other languages like Norwegian sign language I've not been consistent at all, not even reaching a rate of one lesson a month.

My day is going pretty well, especially after answering this ask :)
