personally a lot of my favorites were tragically slain in the first round. just goes to show how good these words for cat really are…

I think you shouldn't allow any of the words that reached the semi finals to compete again. That's what most tournament blogs do
ooo good idea. for reference that would disqualify kisse (swedish), koteczek (polish), 小猫 (mandarin chinese), and miu (ancient egyptian).
i think i’m gonna make polls for this and any future suggestions because i want this to be a democracy not a dictatorship also i’m bad at making decisions

I just wanna say.
When I was a kid and then teen, I was obsessed with knowing every word for "cat." Like a party trick.
Nowadays I'm almost 30 and one of my beloved hobbies is languages. I still know "cat" in nearly every (but probably never ALL) language. Cats are an essential staple in my life, and I also just happen to study languages for fun.
And then this blog happened.
And I was (and still am) full of pure DELIGHT about the polls.
Not only did I learn EVEN MORE words for cats, I got to learn other silly colloquial words that I never even thought to look into.
I hope you don't delete this blog once the competition has ended. Just for the sake of archiving I guess idk.
Maybe you could go through it all again? With more followers you can get a larger sample size. You could change up the number of options, or change which word competes again which in the early stages? Idk just ideas.
Anyway. My point is. This blog means a lot to me. Thank you very very very much for doing all of this.

anyways this is a very sweet thing to say!! i’m glad the competition brought you as much joy as it did me. deleting the blog never crossed my mind so don’t worry about that.
the final point is an interesting one. we’re currently at 800 followers exactly, so there is a much larger sample size than we started with. furthermore, a lot of people have expressed the sentiment of “man i wish i found this earlier, i would have submitted [x]”. would you guys be interested in seeing this run again? i could use the same words, or keep the words but open it up for new submissions, or reset it entirely. in that case i would likely let words that competed the first time compete again, just because of the sheer amount of words we had. i’m open to thoughts!

It's so charming how the linguistic names of cats in many languages usually derive from the sounds they make, much how like words for "mother" are derived from sounds babies would first use as they try to talk.
"Miut" -- Ancient Egyptian feline goddess, derived from the high meowing sound cats make.
"Mao" Chinese Mandarin, for the sound cats make as well.
"Hurairah" --Old Arabic, word for kitten that seems to have derived from the sound of how cats purr.
"Pishik" Azeri, seems to be from a cat's purr as well, and similar to the Persian words for cat "Pishi" and "Mamooshi", and Kurdish "Pishila".
"Nwanwa" -- Igbo for kitten. "Pusi" is the word for an adult cat.
"Billee" is Hindi for cat, also seems to have the vowel ending many cultures have for the feline species. There have been studies as to how cats are more likely to respond to names ending in "ee" than any others.
It's interesting how some words are similar to the "purr" sound, as opposed to the harsher and more plaintive "meow" sounds used in other cultures.

SEMIFINALS - THE CONTESTANTS!
well, folks, it's been a long ride. the finish line is in sight. the semifinals come out TOMORROW AT NOON CENTRAL TIME. but before we get there, let's honor our final four contestants and the fights they've won to get this far! good luck to each, and may the best cat word win!
first we have miu, all the way from ancient egyptian! to get to the semifinals, miu had to defeat मार्जार, kisumirri, बिल्ली, cicuska, and even its twin Mau!
against miu is koteczek, the last of the many polish words we saw in the tournament! on its way here, koteczek eliminated kuting, kocik, кішка, قطة, and macska!
next up is kisse, from swedish -- and the final "kissy" word in the running! in order to stay in the bracket, kisse kicked out kisa, minino, koťátko, cath, kočička, and the internet's beloved puisín!
lastly, going head to head with kisse is 小猫, from mandarin chinese! before the semifinals, 小猫 swiftly took out köttur, にゃんこ, kissekatt, pisică, and kisumisu!
