Evolution of Gus' magic (pt2/2) SEASON 2

[S2E02] This is the second time he creates illusions of people outside of him and his friends, and the first time he uses illusions as disguises! This helps set up ep5, where he will do both of these things, and more...

[S2E05] This is the big one In this episode, Gus makes his largest illusion by far, and creates many illusions at once, with many moving parts. He puts an illusion over the entire graveyard, which allows him to make real objects in that space look like they are moving and changing, when in reality, the objects stay the same and the only moving things are his own illusions. He does this on the statues, where he makes their heads (appear to) turn and eyes glow and cry blood, he does it on Bria, where he makes her spell circles look like they disappear and aren't working, he even makes her hands appear to turn to stone and fall off. He uses the disguise trick from ep2 where he disguises himself as Bria, allowing him to grab her and make her think an illusion did it, and become scared because she now thinks illusions are much more capable of fighting than they actually are. He also did all of this while shrouding the entire graveyard in fog. Gus is immensely tired at the end of this, but he pulled it all off without any of his illusions breaking during the whole scene.

[S2E18] This is the second big one The Gus Has Trauma episode: in this one, we learn that illusions are a massive part of Gus' life even when he doesn't want them to be, as they appear when he's stressed/panicking: his eyes will glow blue and a sphere of... illusion-space will appear around him, which feels like a seperate world where his thoughts can haunt him in illusion form. This isn't an ability of his that he's learned, but it does affect other people when it's strong enough, as it takes over the school, forcing everyone else to be in his illusion world as well. People who are nearest his Ball Of Trauma will get their own worst thoughts projected into their mind. This happens with Adrian Graye and then Hunter: their eyes will glow blue too, just like Gus.

Also in this episode, we learn that Gus is able to see if something is an illusion if he concentrates. When he looks at Edric almost getting branded, he realises Adrian is wearing a coven branding glove that is invisible. Using a spell circle, Gus also whooses this illusion off of Adrian so everyone can see.

Later in the episode, Gus steals Adrian's magnifying glass-looking tool. He will use this in future... :)

[S2E20] Gus uses the illusion tool to inspect Blight Manor and spot invisible coven scouts guarding it. In ep18, he was able to spot invisible things if he concentrated enough, but the tool makes this easier because here he just has to draw a spell circle with it to see these things.

Later, he does disguises again. In ep2, he disguised himself, Luz and Willow as Hexside teachers walking into the school. In ep5, he disguised himself as a creepy stone version of Bria. In this episode, he disguises Hunter and Luz as each other, while he, Hunter, Luz and the others are all engaging in a fight! This is much more difficult and impressive to pull off because of how much he has to concentrate on at once, so he is very tired by the end of the fight, but the whole time it was working, it was 100% convincing. Even when Hunter teleported in the fight, the illusion still worked on him.

[S2E21] Here Gus uses the illusion tool for the second time. Instead of using the Object Finder function, he uses the Mental Torture function: when holding it and activating his glowy eyes from ep18, he can make Monster Belos relive his worst memories from the past 400 years!! :D This is very difficult, as his spell circle wavers more and more as he does this. I don't fully know how this works but I think the illusion tool is working with Gus' illusion-world-sphere power from ep18 because Gus' eyes glow the same, and Gus is seeing Belos' memories play out in front of him, just like how Adrian and Hunter were forced to see their own worst memories when they were near Gus' illusion ball in ep18. So, illusion magic isn't capable of affecting the real world to the same extent as plant and abomination magic for example. But it can affect people's minds: this is where illusion magic is strongest. It can disguise you and other people, making people think you're someone else, bigger than you are, more powerful than you are. It can't change the real world but it can appear to: if an illusion is put over a large space, you can make anything appear to happen in that space. In the last few episodes of season 2, starting at Labyrinth Runners, illusions are much more clearly shown how they work with the mind: Gus gets haunted by his own illusions. Once he gets Adrian's tool, he can force this experience onto others. Horrible, but fascinating! Gus can't physically hurt you with is illusions, but he can mentally hurt you, and the damage that causes can be the same if not worse than the physical kind.

In the finale of season 2, the thing that hurts Belos the most (aside from... the Collector splattering him) isn't Willow's vines, Amity's abomination limbs or Luz's ice spikes, it's Gus, standing in front of him, not touching him, projecting painful memories into his mind.

Evolution of Gus' magic (pt1/2)

Since my post about the development of Amity's magic had suddenly been noticed by people, I gained the motivation to do the same for Gustopher! :D (and then I lost it, but then I gained it again today finally!)

SEASON 1

[S1E05] Can do a teleportation spell where he moves about 1 metre. We don't know if he can go longer distances than this.

[S1E09] Can create an illusion that stays "alive" long enough to sit through his classes. The illusion takes notes, but because S2E05 says that illusions can't do things in the real world, I think the paper and pen might be illusions as well. His illusion isn't fully obediant, as this one shows Gus he's not listening in class. It has emotions because it's mischevious enough to find not listening in class funny, and gets scared when Gus threatens to kill it. Gus says in this episode that he moved up "a couple" of grades, so the skill to make illusions of yourself like this - even though it's disobediant - seems to be something that students of his age normally wouldn't know yet.

Also, he can create several illusions at once, of himself and other people. He did this in the detention pit, where he created ones of himself and Luz as a distraction. These illusions had different poses, but didn't move or speak.

[S1E13] Can make illusions to say phrases, but he's not good at getting the right phrase to show up... Also, he can enhance other people's magic: he adds arms to Willow's plant so that it can punch.

[S1E14] This moment is very brief but here we learn that he can make illusions that have sound! He summons a noisy vaccum cleaner to scare the animals. [S1E15] Makes his second illusion that makes noise: one of himself, which looks and sounds exactly like him. We don't know if the one in ep9 could talk too, but this one can.

We also see in this episode that Gus knows the light spell: this is a basic spell, but Gus uses it here in ways we hadn't seen before with Luz. He summons a large ball of light while extinguishing all other light in the room at the same time, and he can split up this ball into a dozen smaller ones which he spreads out.

[S1E17] Not only can he create a dozen illusions at once, but he can make them all move at once! This is much more advanced than what he did in the dentention pit in ep9. Gus didn't get much action in this episode but I think this scene with his illusions helps lead into the next episode, where he takes this cloning ability further...

Also in this episode, he creates a moving illusion that plays out a demo of a grudgby game, with several moving parts such as the player, ball and fireworks, which I think is pretty neato

[S1E18] Following on from the people illusions he could create in episodes 9, 15 and 17, here he makes ones of himself, Luz and Willow, which I assume he makes walk to the school boat (and then disappear once getting on). He also makes an illusion of Kikimora walk, point and... repeatedly flop. The previous people illusions we've seen him make hadn't walked, so this might be a first! He seemed to need a lot of concentration with his eyes closed to make the illusions of him and friends, but was fine when doing Kiki. Maybe it requires more concentration the further away he is from the illusion(s), and/or the more illusions he makes.

a pet headcanon of mine is that after they're done with the sigil removal, emira expands her horizons and starts studying the psychological side of healing, pulling in some resources from the human realm and combining it with boiling isles methods (i imagine the field of psychology in the boiling isles, while existent, was often pushed aside as just a lesser branch of the healing coven back when belos was in charge. i do imagine there's often magic like the memory tweezers involved)

and i imagine she ends up focusing in on like, art therapy and self-expression, because she knows how important that can be, after having her individuality stifled so hard when she was young
