Forgot To Lock The Door
Hey, I'm also doing sk8 the infinity agere stuff! I haven't watched it in a while though, so i may get some things wrong. please tell me if i do!
Tw: mentions agere getting mixed up in Fet*sh
The school day was extremely long. Reki just wanted to go home. He was so exhausted. Everything was so boring and he just felt depressed. He needed to mentally prepare if he was going to go to S tonight. So before Langa could even meet up with him, he was already riding his skateboard home.
Right when he entered his house, his mom was in the kitchen baking cookies. She greeted him but he barely said anything back. Reki went straight to his room and threw his bag in the corner and shut the door.
You could say Reki wasn’t your “normal” teenage boy. Sure he was a skater and “cool” dude, but that all hid his weakest side. His little side. Reki was an age regressor. He acted young when he needed to cope.
Since the day tired him out so much, he was feeling very small. Going on all fours, he reached under his bed and pulled out a diaper and backpack. His bladder tended to weaken when he was regressed and he did not want to risk having any accidents. Plus the padding was super comfy! He dug through his bag and pulled out his stuffed bear and paci.
Reki hugged the stuffed bear and put the pacifier in his mouth. Next came putting on his diaper. He wasn’t the best at this. One side was always tighter than the other. But he tried his best.
Once he was finished, he took out his tech deck and began playing with it, doing cool tricks. It was very relaxing and helped him a lot.
After he began to become bored of the tech deck, he got out his crayons and some paper. He drew a picture of him and Langa skating together. Then he drew some cartoon characters and small doodles.
Suddenly, he saw the doorknob begin to turn. He had forgotten to lock his doors. He tried to get up to hold it shut, but tripped on his own feet and fell.
“Reki? Are you okay?” Langa. Luckily, he stopped opening the door when he tripped.
“Uh yeah! I’m fine!” he answered back nervously after spitting out his pacifier.
“I don’t believe you. You forgot to meet up with me after school, you never forget,” Langa said. He truly was worried.
“I’m fine, Langa! Go away!” Reki got up to go lock the door but Langa opened it, seeing Reki with his padded butt, teddy bear, and pacifier clipped to his hoodie. Langa gasped out of shock, not expecting to see his boyfriend like this.
“Babe, what’s going on? Why are you dressed like this?” He questioned. Reki stood like a deer in headlights before he broke down crying. He didn’t want anyone to know about this. Especially not his boyfriend! He’ll probably break up with him or think its some kind of fetish.
“Hey, it’s okay, I’m not mad or upset, I’m just a bit confused and worried,” Langa tried to comfort him.
He let Reki cry it out, figuring it would be best since Reki often didn’t cry. Once he was done, Langa rubbed his back.
“I- I age dream and regress. So i act like a baby or toddler to cope or I mentally revert back to a younger state of mind,” Reki answered when he felt like he could speak.
“Ohh, is that what this is? You can do that, baby, I don’t mind. Do you need to be taken care of? I don’t think babies can go without a parent or caregiver,” Langa said. He somewhat understood what was going on. He wasn’t going to judge his boyfriend, and instead would support him in any way.
“If you’re okay with that, I’d love to! I always wanted a caregiver!” Reki answered. Langa patted his head
“I can do that for you, honey,” Langa gave him a kiss on the forehead, making him giggle, “What were you drawing?”
Reki crawled over to his picture and showed him what he drew. He held it up proudly, showing it off.
“Wow, sweetie, this looks great!”
Reki smiled brightly before putting his paci back in his mouth and started coloring another one.
They spent the rest of the afternoon playing, coloring and cuddling. Reki didn’t want to age back up but they were going to S tonight and knew Langa was waiting all week for it. So he crawled out of his new caregivers arms and started putting away his stuff.
“Whats the matter, baby boy?” Langa asked.
“We have S tonight, I need to get ready,” he answered.
“How about we skip it for tonight. We’ve been going there a lot, maybe we should take a break,” He suggested. He knew that Reki was having some problems with his mental health and anxiety and just wanted him to feel better.
Reki immediately dropped his stuff and crawled right back into Langa’s lap. It was nice to finally have a break.

@cauterisen
He couldn't help but chuckle then. So they were going back to their toddler years were they? It was something that they did when they were that age constantly. Was always race toward the destination that they were going to while saying that phrase. Of course someone always ended up having to start way earlier than the other person though. That's always how it seemed anyway.
"On the count of three then?" Reki asked. He gets his skateboard ready to go to race her there. But he has a feeling that she might end up leaving before he even gets to three.

Hasegawa Family
Tumblr media
Hasegawa family consisted of three members, Oliver, the father, from Canada, Nanako, the mother, from Japan, and Langa, their son, who all three together lived in Canada. When Oliver died, Nanako and Langa moved to Okinawa, Japan, Nanako's hometown. They're currently caring for a dog that Langa and Reki found and fed, whom they named Buddy, as he was very friendly. Buddy followed Langa to the apartment, Nanako let him stay for one night and he eventually stayed with them until today.
Many of the characters are constantly changing, such as hair, eyes, facial features, to make them look more like the canon, but keeping our way of making sims, so the appearance may vary a little over time.
Names marked with * are unofficial characters. Characters marked with ✩ are the most common ones to appear in our stories.
~All the family under the cut line~
Disclaimer: English and Japanese is not our native language, so it's possible that we have writed and/or translated some things incorrectly. 🙇💦
馳河ランガ (Hasegawa Langa) ✩
Tumblr media
First name: ランガ (Langa)
Last name: 馳河 (Hasegawa)
Paternal last name: ???
Ocupation: High School Student (高校生)
Job: Part-time job at Dope Sketch
"S" Name: スノー (Snow)
Stance (Snowboard/Skateboard): Goofy
Birthday: February, 8th
Zodiac sign: Aquarius
Blood type: AB
Weight: 64kg
Height: 178cm
Age: 17
Langa is the son of Nanako and Oliver. He came to Okinawa with his mother from Canada after his father passed away. He had been very attached to both of them as they were a very close family, spending many days snowboarding together, since he was very young, until his father died. He tried to go back to snowboarding, but without him by his side, alone, it was practically impossible to feel the same passion as before.
Once in Okinawa, he met many people, starting with Reki, a guy who is a classmate from the same school, to whom one day his skateboard went down the street, finding him Langa and becoming interested in the sport and Reki.
Since he was a child he has been playing sports encouraged by his father and mother, he started practicing snowboarding with his father, he's very good at many sports if not all of them, but in spite of that, the one he has the most fun and practices the most is skateboarding, because in a way it is similar to snowboarding but without snow and being able to practice it freely and infinitely in a lot of different terrains.
He's a genius in studies and also when it comes to snowboarding and skateboarding, but in Japanese calligraphy and language still has a lot of room for improvement. In spite of that in English he's a fast reader and is able to read many books. Sometimes he seems very innocent but it's just the way he is, since he was a child has only been interested in snowboarding and nowadays in skateboarding, so can be lost in those things he doesn't understand or he's not that interested in (this can also be applied to hamburgers and his poutine or food in general).
He's an independent guy, whenever he stays home alone knows how to handle the household chores. As for music, he likes and listens to Hip Hop, some songs he tries to sing, although feels a little embarrassed at the thought of doing it in front of other people. He doesn't really like DJ music, which sometimes makes him have small deep conversations with Reki, when he talks about those styles, since Reki likes them, but they soon pass when start talking about skateboarding.
Among the activities he likes to practice are singing and dancing, he says that one day wants to do like ADAM and dance on his skateboard, but he hasn't mastered dancing very well yet. He likes to look for flowers and climb, activities that he has long since abandoned, since they were two things he used to do with his father and mother.
His favorite colors are red, blue and yellow.

馳河菜々子 (Hasegawa Nanako)
Tumblr media
First name: 菜々子 (Nanako)
Last name: 馳河 (Hasegawa)
Job: Nurse
Age: ???
Oliver's widowed wife and Langa's mother. After death of her husband Oliver, she was worried about their son's mental and physical health. From that day on, she was afraid that he wouldn't make it and would remain in sadness, even though he always told her that everything was fine. She saw that it was not so, since Langa had no friends and always went out alone, so when some time passed, she thought that a change of place would be good for both of them and so they packed their bags and traveled to Okinawa, Japan, the land where she was born and grew up. There Langa met a guy, Reki, and she realized that her son was once again lively and happy.
Nanako is a nurse and like almost all nurses she always has a smile and positive, cheerful words for her patients and their families. She's very familiar, so much so that even if Oliver is not present with them, she always asks him for advice on almost every new decision she makes in life or that has to do with their son.
She doesn't like blues music very much, every time listens to it changes the music station. Lately she has become very fond of playing video games, especially with her son. Her least favorite color is blue… poor son of hers. As for decorations, the basic one is the one likes the most and therefore the apartment where they live is full of furniture of that style.
Oliver
Tumblr media
First name: Oliver
Last name: ???
Job: ???
Stance (Snowboard/Skateboard): Goofy
Status: Deceased
Age: ???
Husband of Nanako, and father of Langa, the three of them lived together in Canada. He was an expert snowboarder. He taught Langa from a very young age and they would go snowboarding as a family. As the years passed he died and Nanako and Langa left Canada behind and moved to Okinawa. He was a very optimistic, patient and family oriented person.
Buddy*
Tumblr media
Name: Buddy
Last name: 馳河 (Hasegawa)
Type: Mixed Breed Dog
Buddy is a dog that Reki and Langa found in the street, inside a small box. They fed him and named Buddy, as he was always looking to be pampered by both of them, he barked in response to their questions and got on Langa and Reki's skateboard to skate. That day when they both skateboarded back to their own homes, Buddy stealthily followed Langa to his apartment. Nanako, seeing the situation, let Buddy stay alone for the night and promised Langa to find another place for him to stay. The next day Langa and Reki talked to each other, they tried to convince Reki's mother, but she flatly refused, as there were already too many members in the Kyan family and for the moment it would be impossible for them to have a pet. Then they tried to talk to Oka, and he told them that Sketchy would not accept anyone else in DOPE SKETCH, since he was the owner of that territory. Besides not getting along very well when they brought Buddy to the place. They searched and searched for different options, and at the end they both went to the landlord of the apartments where Langa and Nanako lived to beg him to let Buddy stay with them for a while until they could finally find him a place. To this day he still lives with the Hasegawa family.
Next family will be Chinen Family. See you on Tuesday! 🐈🛹

Oh oh! Can we get some hedcanons about cherry adopting a girl who is around miya's age. Like how close would they be and how would others feel about her being his daughter now. Bonus points if uncel Joe and little missy mess with daddy blossom
Xoxo love your work so far, keep it up💙
➯ A/N: This was such an amazing request, I had so much fun writing it! Hope you enjoy :)
Also, i started watching Your Lie in April today, and its AMAZING! So much more than what I was expecting
➯ With a daughter
➯ Characters: Kaoru Sakurayashiki with a young daughter. Reki, Langa and co. are mentioned throughout!
➯ Warnings: none:)
Tumblr media
Having a child had never crossed Kaoru’s mind before, but when Joe had teased him about how “you treat Carla better than you would a child!”, the idea kind of stuck with him. And so, he’d spent countless nights awake, wondering to himself if it was something he truly wanted?
He’d pass parks, seeing parents with spewing babies and toddlers throwing tantrums, wondering if he could actually put up with that? But as he passed the shops, he came across a mother and her daughter, who looked around 12. He watched them pass, a grin on the child’s face as she looked into her shopping bag, examining her haul for that day. And so it was settled
He wanted a baby girl he could spoil absolutely rotten
And the search for a child carried on, and this time instead of baby shops and websites, he was browsing the shelves of Claires and other tween clothing stores. It had only occurred to him over a bottle of wine with Joe, as they were discussing if Kaoru was truly ready for something like this. Instead of a crying baby or a messy toddler, he could simply adopt someone a bit older!
It made sense too. For a single parent, an older child seemed much more doable. Of course, he wouldn’t be alone. Joe was always telling him how he’d help out, yknow, if he actually went through with the damn thing.
Not to mention, the older you get, the more difficult it is to get adopted. Babies and young children will get adopted left right and centre, whereas the child he will take home will have been there for a while. Finally, they will have a place to call a home
He spent months trying to get the approval for adoption, and one fateful day he finally got the letter that yes he could go ahead and take one home. He was ecstatic, spending the next few days finding out the location of every orphanage around his area of Japan. He messaged every single one, asking when their next visiting day was
And so it was set: Kaoru would not rest until he had found his perfect little girl
He went through orphanage after orphanage, searching for someone he could call his own. However, none of the children were lighting that paternal flame inside him. It wasn’t their fault of course, they just didn’t click with him, staring at him any time he tried to talk to them. Visit after visit, he’d go to Joe’s, ready to tell him about his recent fail.
It wasn’t until Joe came up to him with a phone number, asking if he’d been to this particular orphanage yet. Apparently they had a few children aged 12 and up, and were available for visit that Saturday. And so there he was, packing a bag and getting ready to travel to the house. This time felt different, somehow. He could feel his palms sweat, as if he could sense he would take one of them home
When he finally made it to the house, he was a nervous wreck. The lady of the house let him in with a smile, telling him the children were in the backyard playing while she bounced a baby on her hip. Cherry winced as the baby gurgled at him, glad he opted for an older child
She led him outside, gesturing at the children who were sprinting around in the vast field, hiding behind trees and bushes. It was clear they were playing a game of hide and seek. He smiled as he scanned over them, but it quickly disappeared when he noticed one little girl sitting on the step, head in her lap while her shoulders gently shook with tears
He walked over to her, bending down with a soft smile. He didn’t know where this sudden calmness came from, but that was his last priority right now. A little gash sat on the girls knee, caked with blood as it trickled down her shin. He frowned, pulling out a tissue to gently wipe it. She jumped, wincing with shock from the fresh wave of pain, and surprise. Kaoru gently wiped at her knee once more before looking up at her to attempt a conversation
“Hello, is your knee alright?” She shook her head frantically, wiping a tear away from her face. A small breathy laugh escaped him as he watched the child stand, gesturing to her leg
“Nope, not at all. I think its broken, if you ask me. All cause of that stupid thing!” She threw her arm out, gesturing to a pink board Kaoru hadn’t noticed before. A skateboard.
That’s when Kaoru realised it: I want this one
Suddenly he felt a new sense of importance, like he had to make a good impression. He walked over to the board, tutting as he looked down at it. “This is what hurt you?” He looked at it with disdain as the little girl nodded her head violently. Kaoru could see how she hurt herself, the thing was massive, especially for someone her age. It looked around the size of a board he would use.
Grinning, he picked up the board. “Well, want to see something cool?” She watched in wonder as kaoru stood on it, pushing off and turning quickly, popping an ollie over a stray toy. The little girl jumped, throwing her arms up as she cheered Kaoru on. He finished with a flourish, coming back to stand beside her. “What did you think?” She was speechless, simply moving her hands, saying scattered “wows” and making various sound effects. Kaoru smiled, certain that he could teach her more.
When he realized visiting time was coming to a close, he proposed the idea to the girl, who’s name he had come to know was Lily: he’d come back next week, and he’d bring his board. He even promised to find her a smaller boar perfect for her to learn on, saying he knew a friend who could make her one. From there he would teach her the basics of skateboarding, even a couple of tricks once she got that down. She was delighted, bouncing up and down and declaring she couldn’t wait, all the energy of someone much younger than her. Kaoru found he couldn’t stop smiling himself either
He made his way back through the house, Lily skipping alongside him. He explained the plan to the Lady, that he would come back next week for another visit. Just as he was about to leave, he turned to the lady to request one final thing from her
“Make sure no one snatches her up from me while I’m gone, yeah?”
Needless to say a bottle of wine was opened at Joe’s that night in celebration of Lily, the potential daughter
And so the weeks turned into months, and Kaoru returned each week with his board and some sweets for her and the other children, teaching her everything she needed to know about skateboarding. After a month or so she could confidently ollie without bailing, and next time he visited she displayed it with delight, watching Kaoru’s face light up with pride.
She had taken a real liking to Kaoru, according to the Lady. She refused to pay any other visitors any notice, declaring they “simply weren’t Kaoru.” This is what finally made him realise that maybe it was time to ask if she’d like to live with him from now on, where she could practice with him every day.
When he asked her, Kaoru could’ve sworn he actually saw stars in her eyes. She simply lit up, throwing herself at Kaoru, tears streaming down her face as she shouted yes, of course she would. she wasn’t the only one crying, Kaoru could barely see from the tears in his own eyes, the lady dabbing at hers with a tissue
Once the paperwork was complete and Lily was his, he felt a weight had been taken off his shoulders. He had packed her a new change of clothes the day he went to collect her, bringing Joe along with him for emotional support. Lily came flying at him the second he got out of his car, wrinkling her nose at Joe
“You never told me you had a boyfriend, Kaoru” she stuck her tongue out at him from over his shoulder while they both tried to convince her that no, they weren’t a couple, before she ran upstairs to get changed. Joe turned to Kaoru, an almost offended look on his face
“Why were you so adamant that we weren’t together??” “I dont need her worrying she’s going home to a Gorrila” “HEY”
Once they all got home, they threw a little party at Joe’s who had closed a little early specially for it. Kaoru didn’t let her out of his sight, making sure she wasn’t uncomfortable with all the new people. Of course, it was only Joe, Shadow, Reki, Langa and Miya, all of whom she would meet eventually, but he still worried in case she got overwhelmed.
She made quick friends with Reki, who was ecstatic from the moment he realised she could skate. The two bonded over it, talking about tricks they’d learned, Reki shouting over at Kaoru because why hadn’t he taught him anything??
Miya was a bit standoffish at first, but when she saw the switch in his hand, the two were instantly bonding over who had better villagers in Animal Crossing, and who had passed more levels in Mario with three stars
As the months went on, Lily really settled into her new life in Okinawa, starting at school in Miyas class. The two were joined at the hip, Miya often coming home to Kaoru’s so they could practice together, or simply study and watch some movies. Reki constantly teased the shit out of the two, talking about how he heard “wedding bells”. This comment earned him a swift whack into the skull from Kaoru, warning him not to tease his little girl
Soon enough Kaoru was making her own skateboard with built-in Carla, who helped her skating improve insanely. As Kaoru said, she was definitely a chip off the old block. Langa and Reki would take her to the skate park with them, helping her land new tricks and would take videos of her to send to Kaoru
Shadow was like a chill uncle to her, bringing her flowers for her room and taking her out to get some clothes and ice cream. Joe was like an uncle too, but a much more untrustworthy one. Would he take her to the park, or would he take her to parts of downtown she definitely shouldn’t have been? Who knows, certainly not Kaoru...
Poor Kaoru can never get a minutes peace. Every second of the day she’s plotting something, waiting for him to let his guard down so she can pounce, scaring the shit out of him. When the others are around its 10x worse, all of them ganging up on him to pull pranks
As well as skateboarding, Kaoru tried to teach her how to do calligraphy. She ended up being awful, blotting the ink and smearing it with her hand. But hey, it was a fun art project that made it onto the fridge
At S, she was watched like a hawk. When Kaoru was competing, the others would be like her bodyguard, making sure no one got within 5 feet of her. She’d watch her dad with wonder, the look of awe never leaving her face since the first day she saw him skate. She can’t wait for the day she can compete, maybe even beating her own dad
The first time Lily called Kaoru “dad” was when he won a race, showing off some amazing skills and winning the insanely close match by a hair. He picked up his board, looking around for Lily. He saw her in the crowd, throwing her arms up and cheering “THATS MY DAD!! LOOK, RIGHT THERE, THATS MY DAD!” When she spotted him, a large grin spread across her face. “Nice job out there dad! You did amazing!! D’you think I can do that one day?”
Everyone was staring at her, she hadn’t even realised she had said anything out of the ordinary. Soon enough Kaoru was lunging at her, picking her up in a hug so she didn’t see the tears quickly forming on his face. With a smile he pulled away, his voice dripping with pride
“Of course you could. You’re my daughter, aren’t you?”

it’s been a while since the request but here I am with
Matchablossom hcs
for @arsonchaosandgayness
Okay, so we know that Matchablossom are canonical kindergarten friends
so just picture them pairing up for projects such as coloring and those little toddler writing activities
picture 5 y/o Kaoru and Kojiro learning to write each other’s names after learning how to write their own
all the little poorly colored pictures they gave each other
they playing house together and Kaoru going out to “work” while Kojiro cooked
also I think they were classmates during all their school time
and even their moms knew there were no such thing as separating them
during middle school they were always lab partners
Kaoru helped Kojiro with maths and writing while Kojiro helped Kaoru with humanity sciences and biology/chemistry
they got onto skating after playing a Tony Hawk game in 8th grade
they met Ainosuke around freshman year
(aka the year Kaoru got his piercings)
(and the year Kojiro really picked up on cooking)
Kojiro would use Kaoru as a test subject for new dishes
Kaoru pretends to be annoyed but secretly loves it
sophomore year was the year Kojiro realized his feelings for Kaoru
Also he realized how his best friend obviously had a thing for Ainosuke
(said feelings went away pretty quickly, once Ainosuke threw a guy off a cliff)
(but Kojiro didn’t notice that)
(hence like 10 years of pining)
friends turn rivals around senior year when Ainosuke moves to america
Kojiro’s feelings are still there
and Kaoru finally notices feelings of his own
they distance themselves, Kaoru goes to Tokyo, Kojiro to Italy
the both come back to Okinawa once they finish college, and Kojiro opens Sia La Luce
they return to S and become quite common figures there, a few of the people recognizing them as two of the founders
timeskip to canon, Joe takes a liking to Miya as soon as he meets him
same thing with Cherry and Reki
fast forward again to the beef with Adam
that night, in the hospital, a very tired and very impatient Kaoru blurts out his feelings for his best friend
Kojiro is so surprised bc “how the fuck the awesome amazing perfect badass guy I’ve liked for over 10 years likes me back?”
he freaks out a bit and almost falls off his chair
(obviously Kaoru didn’t miss the chance to call him a dumb dense gorilla, affection so clear in his voice)

renga pet-related headcanons !
reki
- certified cat lover he has pet all of the cats in his area EVERY SINGLE ONE (including miya)
- he got into a fight with his mom when he was in junior high school (“no you can’t keep any cats i already have enough mouths to feed!”) so he instead volunteers at pet shelters nearby
- isn’t as fond of dogs as he is of cats, probably got chased by one as a child and while he’s not reluctant to be with dogs, he prefers cats
- (this differs him slightly from miya who is canonically both a cat lover and a dog lover)
- very obsessed with other kinds of pets as well! he also likes reptiles and birds; the parrots at the shelter are oddly keen on him
langa
- his family had a dog when he was a toddler, but he doesn’t have too many fond memories of the dog because he was still too little
- it was a larger breed, along the lines of a husky or a malamute, and it lived to around 11 to 12 years of age
- doesn’t remember much of the old family dog but the fluffiness imprinted on him and so he likes large floofy dogs now
- picked up volunteering from reki and they go together a lot; he’s immediate best friends with many of the big dogs to the point where it makes reki jealous
- the cats tend to stick to him too (reki has a photo album of langa napping with the cats that langa doesn’t know about shh)

Langa: You know, Reki looks so stupid when he smiles.
Miya: Yeah, and when he giggles, he sounds like a toddler.
Langa: He is so short.
Miya: Mnhm, but he is the perfect size to hug.
Langa: Yes he is. And when he smiles or giggles, he looks brighter than the sun.
Langa & Miya: God, I love him.
[Awkward silence]
Miya: Never mention this again.
Langa: Agreed.

Summer Time (Family) Madness
Hi. So it's nothing new but have this rewritten chapter 1 :) Accept these 8.5k words that I've used to fight writer's block :)
Chapter 1 | Next >
AO3 | Original Chapter 1  | Original Chapter 2 | Original Chapter 3 | Original Chapter 4
Langa ran a hand through his hair, glancing around as he stepped out of the apartment complex. The sun was bright, blinding even, but it wouldn’t stop him from spotting what he was searching for. He didn’t necessarily want to be searching for blond pigtails catching in the wind, but he promised his mother that he would. He made a promise to his mother and he wasn’t going to back out now. And anyway, she shouldn’t have been hard to spot; in the year he had been living in Okinawa, Langa had come to the conclusion that blond locks weren’t quite as common around here as they were back in Canada. At least, natural blond locks weren’t a common sight among the streets of the island.
It wasn’t long before he was spotting the girl. Her face was practically pressed to the window of a small shop a little further own the street, her brown eyes reflecting against the glass. She looked like a toddler left unsupervised in a toy shop, excitement exuding from her being. And that alone had Langa letting out a sigh as he made his way to her and tapped her on the shoulder.
“I told you to wait for me.”
“Where’s your boyfriend?”
Langa felt his insides squeeze at the words. Surely, it wasn’t the first time she had teased him about his apparently not so subtle crush – it was one of the first things she had said to him when she first arrived in the country, having heard through a game of familial broken telephone that he had found himself a best friend – but it didn’t make it any easier to deal with. With every little joke, every little jab, every teasing edge to the girl’s words, Langa felt himself choke up a little bit. With every little remark, he knew that his feelings for Reki were becoming more and more evident to the girl, but that didn’t mean that he was going to give her the satisfaction of knowing that she was reading him correctly. If anything, her all-to-knowing grin only made his desire to shove her aside grow.
“Reki,” Langa turned the name in his mouth a few times, muttering it under his breath. It was weird, saying it in English rather than Japanese. He hadn’t lost the language – he never would, he knew that – but it didn’t feel right. It felt… off, saying the boy’s name in a language that was not hit own. It felt off, in a similar way that his name was always pronounced weirdly back in Canada, teachers squinting at their attendance sheets and hesitating over the two syllables. “Reki,” Langa finally said, pronouncing it in Japanese as he was used to before switching back to English, “is busy today. Also,” his eyes narrowed onto the girl who was still grinning like a fool, “he is not my boyfriend, Emmy.”
Emily hummed, her grin stretching even wider as she rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet. She feigned innocence as she looked ahead, a look that annoyed Langa to the highest degree. “Yet. He’s not your boyfriend yet. Unless,” a glint of mischief flashed in her eyes as she glanced at the boy, “you have another boyfriend and he’s just the side chick. Side dude? What the equivalent—”
“I’m not in a relationship!” It wasn’t like Langa to lose his cool. He wasn’t the type to snap, especially not for something as lowly as idle gossip. He wasn’t someone who particularly cared what others thought of him but this? This was too much for him. This was too much for him to handle. He wasn’t ready to have this conversation. He was not ready to have it again; explaining to his mother that he and Reki really were just best friends was more than enough. “So just drop it.”
Emily huffed as she stuffed her hands in her pocket and settled next to Langa. She didn’t push any further which honestly surprised Langa. They weren’t quite as close as they once had been, but if there was one thing that Langa knew about the girl, it was that she always did as she pleased. No one had authority over her unless she was willing to conform; it had to come from here, no amount of intimidation would force her to do as desired. Emily was a force of nature that calmed for no one except herself, so not getting a retort from her felt unnatural. Langa waited for it, he waited for the snarky comment to come and bit him, but it didn’t come. There was no shit-storm released on him but still, he waited for it, a defensive anxiety forming in him. No retort was said but it still hung in the air, the sword of Damocles hanging over his head.
Langa’s pace was fast as they started making their way down the street. Normally, he would have slowed for Emily, a little shift in his pace to accommodate the girl next to him, but with annoyance blocking his rationality, he couldn’t find it in himself to think about her. He couldn’t be bothered to slow down – she was practically jogging next to him, not that he cared. In all honesty, Langa was less than thrilled to have Emily around.
Perhaps they had been best friends when they were children, but it had been years since then. A million things changed since the last time they had been close, two little kids who naturally gravitated towards each other during the summer months and family gatherings. It had been years since the last time Langa had hidden behind the girl while they were at the park, two grade-school-aged children being approached by others their age. It had been years since they had stopped being close friends, falling back into that unfamiliarity of cousins who were almost strangers.
For the 10 first years of his life, Langa has spent day after day under the warm Canadian summer sun with the girl. Every day, their parents would drop them off in the morning at their shared grandparents and would pick them up around dinner time. Summer after summer, Langa and Emily had spent their days together, playing all around the house. For years, they had been the only other kids in each other’s lives, or at least, Emily had been the only other kid in Langa’s life for so many years. She was all he knew, having practically grown up with the girl. But her twelfth summer marked a shift.
At the age of 12, Emily no longer wanted to spend her summer being babysat by her grandparents. She wanted to go to her friends’ houses. She wanted to spend more time at the studio, practicing for her ballet recitals. She wanted to do things that didn’t include Langa anymore. By the age of 12, Emily had truly started having a life outside of the family. By the age of 12, she had truly started having a life outside of Langa and that was when the rift began. Emily had friends and Langa did not. Emily, by the age of 13, had so many people surrounding her and Langa, by his eleventh summer, had no one.
Their grandparents had tried encouraging Langa to go make friends at the park, encouraged him to keep doing what he normally did when Emily was around, but without the bubbly girl at his side, Langa found no appeal in going out. Without Emily, there was no point in going to the park. She was the one talking to everyone and becoming best friends for the day with them; Langa always just hide behind her, sticking to her, afraid to talk to the other kids. Langa had never been the most successful kid on the playground. He had never exactly been the most extroverted kid. He usually hung the background until someone – Emily – pulled him out front, including him in whatever was happening around them. And without her to pull him front and center, going out to see other kids was pointless for Langa. What fun could be found in sitting on the swings all alone, going back and forth for hours until the sun started to set over the hill in the distance? With Emily starting to fade, Langa had nothing. Without the only other kid in the family, Langa was alone.
“Could you slow down, you giant twig!”
“Huh?”
Langa came to a stop as Emily panted next to him. She was bent over, hands on her knees, as she tried to catch her breath. Under the stray locks of blonde hair, Langa could see how flushed her cheeks were; she looked like she was burned in the face, her whole face red from the exertion. Or maybe she looked like she had just run a marathon. Regardless of what she may have looked like, Langa knew that she wasn’t pleased by her flushed cheeks or by the sweat sticking wisps of hair to her forehead.
“Aren’t you supposed to be a ballerina or something? Shouldn’t you… not be winded from walking?”
Emily snapped her head up, brown eyes narrowing onto her cousin’s face. A tinge of fear struck the boy as she glared at him, rosy cheeks seeming blood red now. “Yeah, a ballerina! Not an Olympic sprinter, you ass!” She straightened out, now standing as tall as she can next to Langa. “You’re like 6’10”! One step for you is like six of mine!”
Langa blinked at the girl. She was still glaring at him, annoyance straining her features. She almost looked intimidating like that. She could have been the epitome of intimidation had she not been so small next to him. She really could have seemed so much scarier, but honestly, she just looked like an annoyed and spoiled cocker Spaniel with her blond pigtails rising and falling with her huffed breaths. She looked like an angry puppy that thought it knew best.
“That’s not true. I’m not that tall.” Langa paused, eyes still glued to the girl. Nothing came from her. “One step of mine is…” He took one step forward before turning back to the girl. His fingers curled around the little white wrist and tugged her towards him, causing her to stumble. “About a step and a half of yours.”
“You…” Emily sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose. “Thank you, Captain Obvious. Glad you haven’t changed one bit.” Her sharp features softened with her eyes which seemed to be pleading now. “Just slow down, won’t you? Please?”
Langa gave her a curt nod, now paying careful attention to the speed of his steps. He had lost the habit of matching others’ speeds; Reki had never been bothered by his fast pace, matching it even. Together, they went fast. And on their skateboards, well, they would fly.
“You thinking of your boyfriend again?”
Emily’s grin was huge, her eyes bright and teasing. She knew that she had hit a nerve with Langa, but she made sure to exploit that vein. While most people would avoid topics that caused friction, Emily dived in head first, even after being told to stop. She, unlike Langa, lived for provocation and strong reactions. She specifically sought out sensitive topics, all for the thrill of being annoying. She, unlike Langa, highly enjoyed the annoying gossip. She, unlike Langa, wanted to know everything that was happening in other people’s lives, even when nothing was happening. She would invent stories if she had to. But Langa was not going to give her the satisfaction of annoying him as he turned his head to her, a deadpan expression on his face.
“I said drop it.”
“Fine!” Emily sighed once more as crossed her arms and rested them over her head. Her eyes fell shut as she tilted her chin up, soaking up the warm summer sun. She seemed content like that, walking blindly ahead. “Not like your love life would be interesting to me anyway. You’re too useless to give me any juicy gossip. You probably th—”
Her eyes snapped open as she stumbled back. Langa’s fingers had curled around her arm, tugging her back onto the sidewalk, back next to him. Emily blinked a few times, staring at the street before them. Had Langa done nothing to stop her, she would have wandered into the traffic with her eyes closed. While Langa was renowned for being the spacy and reckless one of the family, Emily really wasn’t much better than him. He may have been known for jumping head first into danger, but that didn’t mean that Emily avoided it. She just happened to waltz right into it without even realizing what she was doing. She didn’t look where she was going, only surprised when she found herself being brought to a halt before misfortune could touch her.
It was a miracle neither one of them had had a trip to the hospital yet.
“Hey, Langa?”
Langa hummed as a slender finger curled around a lock of his blue hair. He felt the girl’s gaze, felt her scrutinizing him, but he tried his best to make nothing of it. He simply stood still, occasionally glancing between her face – the freckles chaotically scattered across her face, the intensity in her brown eyes, the crease in her brow, the scrunch of her nose – and the cars that zipped by them. Neither one scared Langa, but he also knew that both were dangerous. Car or Emily, which one could be more unpredictable?
“You still dye your hair?”
Still dyeing his hair? Now who was being Captain Obvious, asking a question with such an obvious answer? Everyone knew what the answer was: there was no way his color was natural. No one thought it otherwise; no one thought it was natural, and not only because his light brown roots were starting to show once more. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Langa’s hair was dyed on a regular basis, though he must admit that his latest touch-up was more than overdue now.
“No.” Emily knitted her eyebrows together. “This is all-natural. I cried one night until my fairy godmother showed up and I wished for my hair to be naturally this blue. And since she pitied me, she granted me my wish and I’ve been blue ever since.”
Langa yelped as the lock of hair was tugged, Emily’s voice piercing the hazy urban sounds he had grown used to. He should have expected the violence – her fingers hadn’t left his hair and she was notorious for pulling hair back when they were kids – but it didn’t occur to him until it happened, his head jerking down with the tug.
“Asshole! I was seven when that happened! It’s not my fault I was told fairy tales my whole life and thought fairy godmothers were real!” She gave Langa’s hair one last tug, pulling another yelp out of him as he gripped the lock in hopes of lessening the pain, before letting her hand fall away completely. Her brown eyes narrowed onto him once more, but they weren’t filled with annoyance or petty anger. There was something else in her eyes, a look verging onto concern, though Langa wasn’t totally sure if that was it or not. “You’re gonna end up killing your hair like that, you know.” Emily crossed her arms over her chest. “You’re supposed to let it breathe everyone once in a while.”
Langa passed a hand through his hair, smoothing it out. It was still soft, despite the years of dyeing it. It was still soft, soft like when he was little. It was soft as it slipped through his fingers, his nails grazing his scalp. The feeling was funny; it was almost as if he remembered someone doing the same to him some time ago, soft fingers in his hair, calming him and lulling him to sleep. The feeling was strange, but as his hand fell aside, he forgot about it, the forming memory vanishing just as quickly as it had formed.
“It’s not like I bleach it. Just color. It’ll be fine.” There was a pause, a small smile pulling at the corner of Langa’s mouth as he poked his cousin’s cheek. “Also, this is your fault. You started this.”
The girl huffed, her arms still crossed over her chest. She rolled her eyes back but she didn’t bother concealing her smile. “You’d think that after three years, you’d grow out of the color.” She shook her head as her arms fell to the side, fingers curling around the strap of her little bag. “No 15-year-old’s decision is ever a good one.”
“You were 17 when you did this to me. I was just stupid enough to agree to let you touch my hair.”
Emily gasped, eyebrows pulled together. She gasped, vocalizing her offense, but it didn’t last long. It wasn’t long before the two were muffling their laughter, the corners of their eyes crinkling from the giggle fits. They giggled, Emily leaning onto her cousin. They giggled as they walked through the memory that felt both so close and so distant.
It was Christmas, another holiday spent at their grandparents, as usual. The family had come together once more, the adults gathered around the dining room table to chat, mostly in Japanese. Although the English and the Japanese were weaved together as if they formed a single language, it was necessary to master both languages to understand what was happening. And while Langa understood both those languages, even being able to speak it rather fluently, Emily had fallen out of the habit of speaking it. Unlike Langa who lives in a household where English and Japanese coexisted, Emily lived in a purely English household and had lost the language she had grown up in. As a child, she was just as fluent as Langa, spending her days with her grandparents who mostly spoke Japanese around the house, but as she grew up, a decade had gone by without uttering a single word in Japanese, losing the language completely. And just like that, Emily had found herself isolated from the family, spending her evenings in a corner of the living room, never participating in any of the conversations despite her bubbly personality.
It was Christmas, a Christmas like every other. Emily was on her phone, not bothering to even try to integrate herself with the rest of the family. And Langa, Langa who felt awkward no matter who he was with, stood on the side as well, simply nodding and smiling whenever his grandmother asked him questions, trying his best to draw the least possible attention to himself. Both tried to disappear in the background, but for vastly different reasons. And despite their desperate attempts at disappearing, they stood out, though not to the family. They stood out to one another and in a moment of delusion – or so he would say – Langa found himself approaching his cousin, peering over her shoulder to see what was captivating her so much.
He knew he should have just sat beside the girl and asked her instead of trying to sneak a look at her screen, but asking felt too awkward. And if she happened to be texting her boyfriend– Did she have one of those? She seemed the type that would, but they never talked about that sort of thing. Actually, they didn’t talk about much in general, their interests far too different. What similarities were there between snowboarding and ballet? How could two people so different connect on anything? There was nothing that could connect them, even if they had once been so close as children. But still, Langa tried. Langa tried to talk to the girl. He tried to make conversation with her, find some common ground. Maybe it would make the night less lonely and painful.
There was no boyfriend on the girl’s screen. She was just scrolling through Instagram, scrolling through reels and posts. They were all related to hair in some way or another: dyeing, styling, cutting. Reel after reel, the girl scrolled mindlessly, liking more or less one out of three posts. It was all about hair tutorials and, despite his cluelessness about the subject, Langa tried to connect with his cousin over that. Despite only knowing that he needed a haircut – at least according to his grandmother he needed a haircut, reminding him every time he saw her by pulling on his hair – he tentatively tried to start a conversation. At least he’d have tried something.
“You looking into doing something to your hair?”
Emily looked up from her phone, brown eyes fixated on her cousin who was now sitting next to her. There was a funny look in her eyes, and thinking back to that moment, it was most likely bashfulness. She seemed a little embarrassed as her eyes trailed back to her phone.
“Oh, well…” She looked back to Langa who hadn’t moved. “Not really? I mean, I’d like to but also… I just, with all my recitals and stuff, I just can’t have crazy hair, y’know? So I just… I like looking at the videos. I like looking at all the colors and stuff. It’s enough.”
“Wanna do something to mine?”
Langa had never seen her eyes light up the way they had at that moment. Her defeated look turned to something excited, stars almost sparkling in her eyes. And as she clicked her phone shut and jumped to her feet, Langa felt himself pierced with fear. It wasn’t anything terrible, but just like that, his heart was hammering in his chest as she was hauling up to his feet, almost bouncing in place. Was it fear or was it excitement?
“The pharmacy is still open, so we can get you a color you like!” She had dragged him by the wrist all the way to the door. Her smile was huge and somewhat contagious. “Like…” She furrowed her brow before breaking into a bright grin. “Like blue! You like blue, right? Or maybe red? Green? No.” She shook her head before taking a step back and framed Langa’s face with her fingers. “Blue would suit you best, with your eyes and all.”
Langa sighed as he pulled his coat and boots on. He sighed as the girl bounced next to him, listing off all the different possibilities. He sighed as he let himself be dragged out of the house, the door shutting softly behind them. And once they were out in the winter snow, snowflakes dancing in the cold air, he knew he was in for something special, be it a good or bad special. Whatever was going to happen from this point on as they walked side-by-side, making their way to the little pharmacy a few blocks away, Langa had no say in it. He would just agree with whatever Emily proposed, nodding as she proposed a box of cornflower blue dye. He would just nod as she asked him if that was all and that was how they found themselves half running back to the house before locking themselves in the bathroom no one ever used.
It had been a messy project. They had made a horrible mess in the bathroom – Langa’s white button-down had been thoroughly stained in the cross and Emily looked like she had strangled a Smurf, her fingers a bright blue from the lack of glove usage – but it had been fun. It had been the most fun they had had together since their childhood. Behind that closed bathroom door, they had laughed and talked, acting as if no time had passed since the last time they had played together, all those years ago. Behind that closed door, they had sounded like friends; Langa actually talked, saying more than two words at a time, and Emily had been bubbly again, just as he remembered her. Their mess had been so much fun, even if they had caused a commotion when they were called to the dinner table.
No one tried to conceal their shock when the two teenagers came down to eat. Everyone had had their opinion to share, from Langa’s mother gasping in shock to Emily’s father scolding her for her impulsivity and bad influence – no one even too a moment to consider that this was perhaps Langa’s idea. They were yelled at, scolded, and pinched, but that didn’t take away from the fun they had had. All of it, from the ruined clothes to the scolding, it had all been worth it. And three years later, Langa was still dyeing his hair that same cornflower blue that Emily had picked out that Christmas night; not once did he even think about changing the color, be it to another blue or another color completely. He’d never say it out loud, but the blue was special to him. He’d never admit it, but it made him smile every time he dyed his hair, thinking back to the fun they had had that night.
“I remember being grounded for a whole month after that.” Emily laughed into her hands, muffling the sound. “I don’t think Grandma ever forgave me for ruining her precious little Langa. I mean, she still brings it up whenever I see her. And I really think she’d like it if you grew back into your natural color. Like,” Emily calmed, stretching her arms over her head one again and resting her hands on the top of her head as she had the habit of doing, “she keeps going on and on about how you’re now an adult and how you’re never going to find a wife looking like,” she gestured Langa, up and down, over and over again, “that.”
Langa blinked at the girl. “But I don’t what a wife.” A pause, the whole world having fallen silent. “She knows that. At least… I think she does, right? I know she’s not exactly cool with the whole thing, but she is aware that I’m not…?”
“Yeah, yeah, I think the whole country is aware that you’re the most useless homosexual ever.” She nudged Langa, but she didn't manage to make him stumble to the side. “Remember that one amateur competition where you blurted out that you were 14 and gay? The poor guy had no idea what to say after that.”
“I got nervous! And I… It was new to me. It was new, the whole,” Langa’s voice dropped to a whisper, “the whole gay thing?”
The quietness of Langa’s voice drew Emily’s attention back to him. His eyes had flittered away from the girl, staring straight at a tree. He couldn’t look at her anymore, not without a sense of guilt. It wasn’t her fault – not at all – but there was something about his sexuality that had his insides twisting. And it wasn’t that he was rejecting it or that he was ashamed about it – far from that, really! If anything, he completely embraced the fact that he was gay and he wasn’t going to take anyone’s shit, not even from his grandmother who insisted on finding him a lovely wife – but still, there was a discomfort with it now. It felt weird now. It felt weird, weirder than it ever had.
Back in Canada, it was rather easy to be out. Sure, it wasn’t the easiest thing, there always was that one homophobic jackass that made it their mission to ruin everyone’s day, but it was far from being a taboo subject. Sexuality was something that was constantly being discussed between the students, be it actual verbal conversations or through small displays such as pins on backpacks and pencil cases, or bracelets, or color-coded accessories representing certain flags. Sure, it seemed to be a lot easier for the girls to be out, but that didn’t stop some of the boys from saying that girls weren’t their thing. Liking boys or girls had never really been a problem back in school since most people were so open to it. It was almost more common to not be straight than it was to be.
But here, in Japan, Langa didn’t know how people would react. From what he had heard, it wasn’t exactly the most open place in the world when it came to sexuality. It wasn’t like Canada where gay jokes could be thrown around without being malicious. And here in Japan, he was the new kid. He was in a completely new environment. He was a blank sheet of paper, no colors splattered across his skin. He didn’t have the pins on his backpack anymore and he didn’t have the rainbow string bracelet tied to his keys either. He had left it all behind as he stepped across the border, stepped into a new life. Here, he was just Langa. A blank slate, a seemingly straight boy. Here, he was the boy that got confessions every other week, confessions he turned down time and time again. Here, his rejections were never associated with his sexuality. Never once did he hear whispers about his rejections being potentially related to him just not being into the girls; all he ever heard was that he was so dreamy and he was just waiting to find someone who could match his beauty.
His head must have been in the clouds once more, not noticing Emily tugging him to a quieter part in the little park. Langa hadn’t noticed their movement through the world until the girl was pulling him down rather forcefully, causing him to stumble in the grass. And once on his knees, everything came flooding in. The whole world suddenly appeared before him, including Emily sitting cross-legged, her back to a tree as she fanned her heat-flushed face with her hand.
“You know, sunscreen is going to be your best friend this summer, so I suggest you get used to having some on you at all times. I also suggest you get used to putting some on in the morning before going out.”
“Is that why you’re so pale?” Emily grinned as she poked Langa’s cheek. “You should tan. You’ll stop looking like a snow monster.”
Langa sighed as he got comfortable next to the girl. The tree’s trunk wasn’t exactly big enough for two people to lean against, but with a bit of squeezing, they managed just fine.
“You know I don’t tan. I just burn.”
“Sucks to be you then. But,” Langa glanced at the girl as she let her head fall on his shoulder, her knees pulled to her chest, “are you out here? Like, do people know, or is that super-secret information that only your mom knows? And me, of course.” Langa rolled his eyes at the girl who was beaming. But her cockiness quickly dissipated as she relaxed once more, her head back on his shoulder. “Like, does… what’s name? That boy, the red-head there, does he know?”
Langa knew that silence wasn’t an answer. He had been told on far too many occasions that he had to voice out his answers, not just stay quiet and hope that people would understand. All his life he had been told to speak up, but for once, in his situation, his silence was the loudest of answers. For once, his silence was more than enough for Emily to understand.
“I’m sorry, Langa.”
“What for?”
“For teasing you about… y’know. I just… If you had told me, I wouldn’t have… At least not in front of him. I would have kept all my teasing for when it was only Auntie Nanako. But like,” Emily sat back up, back straight until she was slouching against the tree behind them, “you’ve never hidden it. Like, I don’t even think you had a denial phase. You just accepted it on the spot and seemed pretty happy to put it on display, be it just out of spite.”
“I did not put my sexuality on display and most definitely not out of spite.”
Emily glanced at him, a dead-pan expression crossing her face. “Right. Right, so your last board wasn’t the gay flag colors and it wasn’t a custom design because someone had told you that being gay was wrong. Right. Of course. And you totally did not make your sexuality your whole personality, obviously.”
“I don’t make it my whole personality.”
If she didn’t look impressed before, Emily looked even less impressed down. If she was willing to believe Langa before, there was no way she was believing him now. And as she held her hand out, gesturing a handshake as she spoke, Langa felt the heat in his cheeks, heat that wasn’t from the summer sun.
“‘Hi, I’m Langa and I’m gay.’” Langa swatted at the girl as she burst into giggles. She ducked her head as if that would save her from Langa’s shoving. “Alright, alright, I get it! You don’t make it your whole personality!” She straightened out again, back in her original sitting position. “But like, I thought you’d tell your friend. Or at least your best friend slash crush.”
Langa rolled his eyes as Emily leaned into him. She was trying to pull a reaction from him but he wasn’t going to give it to her. “Not my crush.”
“Uh-huh, sure. Whatever you say. But you’re never gonna have a shot with him if you keep that part of yourself a secret. And like, it’s a pretty big part of yourself.”
“It’s not like I’m purposefully withholding the information.” Langa sighed as he slumped back against the tree. The sky was clear and blue, and it looked like it went on forever. And maybe it did. Maybe it did go on and on and on. “It just… It just never came up. We’ve never talked about that sort of thing.” And the endless sky, just like the endless ocean Langa had seen just once since his arrival in Japan, had all his attention once more. “And anyway, he likes girls. So either way, no chance for me.”
“You ever thought about, oh, I don’t know, bisexuality?” Emily nudged Langa’s shoulder, drawing his attention from the sky back to her. She had a strange look in her eyes, a look Langa couldn’t exactly decipher. He never prided himself on his ability to read expressions, but this one, this one was a true mystery to him. “Langa! My man! My favorite cousin” It looked like she was about to cry. Was it annoyance? Was she annoyed? “Have you not seen the way he looked at you? He looks at you like you’re the sun!”
“So he squints at me? And looks away because it’s wrong? Also, I’m you’re only cousin.”
“No! No.” She dropped her head in her hands, whimpering a little. “That’s beside the point, Langa. And you know it.” She lifted her head once more, a new determination sparkling in her eyes. “I mean, I’ve just never seen a kid smile so big. Like, it’s actually blinding. And he just- Ugh, I don’t know! But if you stopped being Mr. Ice Cold, maybe you’d have a shot with him!”
“Look,” it was Langa’s turn to pull his knees to his chest and to rest his chin there as he stared ahead. He let the blade of grass with which he had been fiddling fall to the ground, blending into the endless acres of grass. Well now. The grass wasn’t endless. The grass was confined, unlike the sky. “I’m okay with just being friends. At least I get to have him in my life which is what’s important. I don’t need to date him or whatever. And anyway, relationships are overrated.”
“Oh my god, you sound just lik— You know what, never mind. You’re just,” Emily sighed again, sounding even more defeated than before. “You’re useless, you know that?”
“Gee, thanks.”
“At least answer me this: you like him, right?”
He tried to stay offended, faking most of his annoyance, but the question caught him off guard, causing him to drop the show completely. He should have expected it – Emily has been saying it since she first got her – but hearing her say it so plainly, it was different from her normal teasing. This time, there was no teasing at all. This time, she was asking him seriously, expecting an equally serious answer.
“I… I guess? Maybe?” A pause, Langa contemplating his answer once more. “Yeah.”
“And you’d kiss his adorable puppy-dog face?”
Langa had never felt himself flush so deeply. This was worse than the conversation he had had with his mother all those months ago. It was worst than his mother’s surprise when he honestly admitted to her that it was Reki, that he did like Reki a little more than just platonically. It was so much worse because, with his mother, there was no elaboration. It was an acknowledgment and they didn’t talk about it further. But with Emily? She wanted more. She always wanted more. She wanted to push the subject, even if Langa had long come to terms with the fact that he and Reki would be nothing more than just friends. Which was completely fine! There was nothing wrong with just being friends. In fact, there was not enough importance put on platonic relationships and Langa was going to remediate that. He was going to correct the misconception that friends were less important than lovers.
He had meant it when he said that relationships were overrated. So what if Reki was never going to love him the way he loved Reki? So what if his heart skipped a beat every time Reki smiled at him in a certain way, the smile where he didn’t try to hide his teeth. It didn’t mean anything. Friends could make each other’s hearts skip a beat. And friends could think about pressing kisses to the other’s forehead. Or to their freckly cheek. Or to their scrunched nose. Or to their mouth which— No. No, Langa was not thinking about kissing Reki. Langa was most definitely not thinking about the way Reki’s lips would feel. Nope, no way. And his palms were definitely not suddenly sweaty. It was the heat. It was nothing more than the heat getting to his head.
“Langa has a crush! Langa has a crush! Langa has a big, fat crush on his best friend!”
Mortified didn’t even begin to describe what Langa was feeling at the moment. Mortification wasn’t strong enough of a word to describe what Emily’s chanting was doing to him. Her teasing only got worse with time and now it was too much. It was way too much as Langa buried his face in his knees, his words muffled by his jeans.
“What are you? Four?”
His vision was mostly obstructed, but he still managed to catch a glance at the grin on the girl’s face. Langa would have glared at her if he didn’t feel like sinking a thousand feet under the grass on which he was sitting. It was hard to seem mad when all he felt was embarrassment.
“20, but that’s beside the point.” Emily grinned even wider as she leaned onto Langa once more. “You have a whole summer of enduring me, so get used to it!”
Langa groaned into his jeans as she shifted her weight the other way, her body hitting the ground with a thump. She was probably staring up the infinite sky, much as Langa had returned to doing as silence enveloped the two. It was the first time it was completely silent between them; despite being naturally quiet, Emily had the ability to rouse him up, getting at least a small gasp of a reaction out of him. And if he wasn’t the one making the slightest of sounds to fill the air, then she was. With Emily around, it was as if silence had never been an option.
Extroverted and loud, Emily was the polar opposite of Langa. She was constantly filling the silence with her chatter, endless words strung together into semi-coherent sentences. In that way, she was a little bit like Reki, and maybe that was why Langa had never minded his rambling. Maybe that was why he found comfort in those rambles, Reki going on and on about skating and the boards he was making and the art he had in his many sketchbooks. He could go on for hours about whatever it was that passed through his head and Langa would never get bored of it. Reki could talk for hours on end and Langa would never stop them. And while he thought it was because Reki truly was just that interesting, perhaps there was something else to it. Maybe it was just that Langa had always loved listening to his favorite people talk. Maybe it was that he had just always liked listening because listening meant he didn’t have to fill the silence. Listening meant that Langa could soak up all the words thrown his way, soak in the passion others had, and that more often than not had him smiling.
“You know—" Langa lifted his head at the sound of Emily’s voice, turning to the girl still lying in the grass— “I always assumed you’d have a boyfriend before me. You’re such a people-pleaser that it was only a matter of time before you found a guy you’d be head-over-heels in love with and you’d run off together and get married or whatever.”
“People-pleaser?” Langa blinked. “Me?”
“Yeah, you!” Emily propped herself up on her elbows to look at Langa. “You’re always so polite and you have these amazing grades and you’re just… perfect! Or at least, that’s what Grandma makes it sound like, with all her idolization of you. She just… You’re her only grandson and we both know how it is.” Emily flopped down, and with her went her voice and mood. “Boys are perfect, especially when they’re fluent in Japanese and they live in the country that’s still somehow home, despite not having lived there in like half a century. And again, you’re perfectly polite and you have the grades I wished I could have. And there was the whole snowboarding thing? Like…” Something twisted in Langa as the girl draped her arm over her eyes. “You could have gone pro, been an Olympic athlete, and just…!”
“None of that is true, you do know that, right?” Another beat of silence, one Langa was stuck filling himself. “I barely interact with people because I don’t know how to be social like you and I don’t actually really like being all that social. And I’m only polite because then I don’t have to keep a conversation going and all I do is repeat the same things over and over again as I nod. And my grades are ass, if we’re being completely honest here. And the only reason you think I’m this amazing is because… You said it, grandma. She likes me because I’m a boy and that’s it. I hold the family name and that’s it. She just wants me to pass it down and she’s favoring me because of that. But she should be favoring you, not me.”
Emily hummed, a hum that sounded a little less choked than her last sentence. If she was crying, she was hiding it relatively well, but Langa wasn’t going to ask. He never knew what to do when people cried, so if he could avoid it, he would. He rather fill the silence than clumsily comfort his cousin, so he continued talking.
“You’ve always been the one to help her. You used to help her make lunch when we were kids and you used to hang around her, have tea and have real conversations with her. You always tried so hard to please her. You did everything right but she’s just… She’s so tough on you and it’s unfair. And…” Langa bit the inside of his cheek as his voice also dropped, barely loud enough for anyone to hear him. “I’m, I’m not gonna run off with some guy and get eloped. I don’t… I don’t even think I’m gonna get married. But you on the other hand?” He nudged the girl in the side, causing her to jump up with a yelp. She had in fact been crying, her eyeliner now smudged around her eyes, but neither one acknowledged her tears. Langa wasn’t going to say anything, but he was still going to try to cheer her up. “You always dreamed of a big wedding, didn’t you? With the whole family there and that stupidly big dress you’ve been dreaming of since you were a little kid? And if you’re the bride, there’s no doubt that it’s gonna be the biggest party of the decade.” A small smile pulled at the corner of Langa’s mouth. “Of the century.”
“I—” Emily choked and rubbed at her eyes. Her smile was shaky, but it was still there, which was enough for Langa. “T’was just a stupid kid’s dream. M’over it. Would rather be planning your wedding with the cute boy you like.”
It was involuntary, the scoff that Langa let out. Normally, he would have grumbled at the insinuation that he had a crush on Reki, but this time, he let the girl indulge herself in such a fantasy. He didn’t contradict her this time; he knew that no matter what he said, there was no getting it off of her mind. And, even if he would never admit it out loud, he kind of liked being able to talk about it with someone. He liked being able to talk about what he was feeling with someone who wasn’t his mother. He liked being able to speak English again, speak the language he had grown up with, the language that was so much easier for him, the language that now felt like a secret code.
“Fine. Indulge me with this hypothetical wedding I’m sure you’ve already planned out completely. Tell me all about these crazy romantic gestures I never would have thought about in a thousand years since, y’know, I’m not good with romance and traditions and all that. How would this hypothetical wedding go?”
“White and red. And royal blue, of course, to tie it all together. Now, I don’t know anything about traditional Japanese weddings, so we’re gonna go western with this one.” Emily scrunched her nose as she stared at Langa. And when a light flickered in her eyes, he gulped, knowing he was in for quite the show. “You’d definitely have a white suit since you look good in white.” Langa tensed as the girl shifted onto her knees, her fingers diving for his hair and pulling it back. “Yeah, yeah, you’d have your hair tied back or slicked back, anything to get it out of your face.” Her hand fell aside, letting his bangs fall into his eyes. “Otherwise, you’ll be nervously fiddling with your hair the whole day or it’s gonna be in your face and it’ll ruin the pictures. Well, the other option is that you cut it, which you might do. I don’t know what you want to do with your hair when you’re older or when this wedding would be. Now, your hypothetical husband-to-be. It was Reki, right? His name’s Reki, right?” Langa flushed once more as he gave her a curt nod. “Yeah, okay, so he’d have a black suit, because contrasts. I’d also force you to have flowers somewhere on you, just because I know it would piss you off.”
“Thank. Real sweet of you.”
Emily giggled as Langa glared at her, but it didn’t last long. It wasn’t long before he was giggling along with her; despite hating that she was assuming something he denied more than once, it was a little bit fun to come up with this hypothetical situation. And she seemed to be having fun, so who was Langa to take that away from her?
“And…” She bit her thumb, eyebrows pulled together in concentration. “What do people need for weddings?”
“A venue?”
“Right! Yes!” She hummed once again, fiddling with a few blades of grass. “Where could you get married? You’re probably not much for a church wedding and it’s not like you can get married in a skatepark or anything.”
Langa snorted at the mental image: a wedding in a skatepark. A wedding at S. A midnight wedding at the top of the abandoned mine, all of his friends and close family gathered in the most chaotic place he knew. It was definitely the worst place to have a wedding, but now that he had started imagining it, Langa couldn’t get it out of his head. Now that he had been imagining how it would be, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. Would they be dressed nicely as Emily had suggested or would they all be dressed in their usual S clothes? Regardless of the choice, it would be a disaster. But despite knowing that it would be horribly chaotic, Langa couldn’t think of a better place. If he was to marry Reki, it had to be—
“Okay, okay,” Langa shook his head, trying to shake all the images away as he pushed his cousin aside. “Enough about hypothetical weddings. Not like it’ll happen anyway. So just, don’t get my hopes up.”
“You know,” Emily bounced right back up, her head back on his shoulder as she looked up at him with the biggest eyes Langa had ever seen, “you really should tell him how you feel because it’ll bite you in the ass someday if you don’t. It won’t do you any good if you bottle it all up. And like,” she sat back up, but Langa was still staring at her, “if he doesn’t take it well, you can tell him it was a dare or something. Or you can be honest with him and tell him that telling him how you feel was the only way for you to properly move on. And sure, maybe your friendship will be a little bit weird for a few days, but if he really is your best friend, then you should be totally fine. And, in the impossible event that you do end up getting hurt, then you can rant to me. I’m here all summer, after all.”
“You are the worst.” Langa sighed but a fond smile still pulled at the corner of his mouth as he opened his arms for a hug. Without any hesitation, Emily fell into his embrace, hooking her chin over his shoulder as he hugged her. “The worst cousin ever. The pushiest brat.”
“And you’re the most stubborn asshole I know.”

They let rekis sisters do their hair. Koyomi practices fancy styles with langa's hair and gets better as he grows it out. The twins just put a bunch of pony tails, hairclips and glitter in rekis hair cause it's too short to do much else (also they're toddlers)

Sk8 Headcanons: Reki's Childhood Edition!
As a baby he was loud, whiney, rowdy, and a little rascal. Once he learned how to walk, he would find anything that was interesting to him and play with it, even dangerous things. Once he learned how to run, Reki would almost run into walls with how fast he would scurry around. His mom had so much trouble keeping up with him that she would practically always have to carry him in her arms to make sure he wasn't getting into anything that would harm him. Whenever Reki would go to daycare, he would try to interact with the other toddlers but no one really wanted to hang out with him, sadly. So he was left to color some coloring pages by himself in a corner or play with trucks and dolls by himself.
On his first day of elementary school, Reki got to make a couple of friends assigned at his table with him. They all shared common interests as any six year old would, drawing, playing with toys, and the current most popular kids show at the time. This little group of friends would often disrupt the classroom throughout the day, so they were all quickly moved to separate tables. Reki was pouty about this and whined to his mom when she picked him up from school that day. Those two friends he made on the first day had stayed his friends all throughout elementary school. At some point, Reki had a little crush on one of them but he always kept it a secret because he was too shy.
Going into middle school, the friend he had a crush on had moved away, so Reki became a little sad at this time because he didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. His other friend, on the other hand, had started to talk more and more about skateboarding, which got Reki a little interested. One day afterschool, his friend brought his skateboard, helmet, kneepads, and elbow pads to teach Reki how to skateboard himself. Reki was really slow learning how to skate board but he eventually got the hang of it. In the next schoolyear, he finally convinced his mom to buy him a skateboard. Reki was so happy to get his own skateboard so him and his friend could go to the skatepark together and practice some tricks. One day, though, Reki had suggested for his friend to try something really dangerous and accidentally got his friend really hurt. His friend's mom then didn't want Reki to hang out with him and cut ties with both Reki and his mom. His friend was in the hospital for a while and when he finally came back at the start of their ninth grade year, Reki's old friend just avoided him and didn't talk to him at all. Throughout the entirety of his last year of middle school, Reki wasn't really as focused as he should've been and instead of studying, he was doodling designs of what he'd want his own skateboard to look like. Reki would sometimes fall asleep at his desk in his bedroom with his sketchbook open and his mom came to check on him one night to find the abundance of sketches he made. She suspected he wanted to make his own board and decided they had no use for the shed in their backyard so she eventually surprised Reki with his very own workspace for making his own skateboard. He was so very grateful and by the end of his ninth grade year, he made his very own skateboard.
Reki started his first year of highschool pretty lonely and still feeling incredibly guilty about what had happened to his old friend. Reki hadn't seen him after a few weeks, so he thought he had moved. He would start to skate to school and despite it being lonely, he actually liked this time to clear his mind a little. One morning when Reki was riding his skateboard from school to home, he came across a man who was chasing after a skateboard that was coming towards Reki. Reki had picked it up for the guy and handed it to him. The guy introduced himself as Oka, he noticed Reki had a skateboard and asked him if he'd be interested in working at a skate shop. Reki was obviously interested but he'd have to ask his mom if he could work even first. A week later, Reki found himself working at Dope Sketch, he wasn't exactly making much, but he enjoyed having a job nonetheless. It didn't take long until Oka had him run deliveries of custom boards with him and introduced him to 'S' (of course he had to get that little pin first).
[Sorry if the ending is a little cut-off, I guess, I just didn't know how to end this giant head canon.]
