Across the Spider-verse (2023) Dir. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson
What can i even say about this movie. It one i haven't stopped thinking about for the last few days. Everything in the movie is amazing, from the visual to the story to how it portrays the characters. And the charater design!!!!! Literally, the whole reason i saw the movie!!!! And that one chase scene!!!! The whole part was just an amazing and deffo my favourite part. From beginning to end, i was wrapped up in the story the movie is trying to tell. It is probably one of the best movies I've seen all year. (10/10)
Erin Brockovich (2000) Dir. Steven Soderbergh
I like this. I thought Julie Andrews was really good as Erin. It was good (7/10)
Misha and the wolves (2021)
It grand. I thought the story was really interesting but like noting amazeing. I kinda forgot i watched it lol so (5/10)
Do Revenge (2022) Dir. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
I love this movie. This is probaye the 3rd time i rewated it. I love Just everything about it, especially the fashion, like it just say so much about the character abd everthing(9/10)
The Big Short (2015) Dir. Adam McKay
I thought this was good. I like the editing a lot. I feel like it makes the story more interesting, I guess. With the story being about something as over complex and honesty, bordering banking, the fast-paced editing really sucks you into the story. That, as well as the acting, just makes it really good (8/10)
White chicks (2004) Kennen Ivory Wayans

The Convalescent By Jessica Anthony
This is such a strange book. To both read and think about. It surreal to read, and can confusing to think about (im still not 100% sure about what this book is tryin to say) since so many events in the book reads like folk-lore, which i do really like. This addtions to almost folk-lore like storys telling make the events toward the end of the book (were it really goes off the rails) feel like a natrual progression and one you could maybe even see coming. The to what isn't a terrble complated novel story wise. But it levase enough there to make you want to read on and see where the fuck there going at points. It can be confusing as hell, but i like that, how it not complety clear on what it trying to say. 7/10
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me By Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell
I got this book ages ago and deicded to reread it and god I love this book. The story is good, and if i were to just read it as a novel i proabyeb think it was grand, but god the art. The art of the book adds so much. I think it evaleds the story to the point of being amazing. I love small used of colour and the way the charater are draw just adds to there charaterisaton alot. (8/10)

Like every lesbian, i love this. It so cute to read about this two nerds bonding. I need them to kiss. Also i love how the artist draws charater, esalily there outfits. For the main girls, it feel like there chose in fashion says a lot alot them and why they like what they like (8/10)

Rookie-Critic's Film Review Weekend Wrap-Up - Week of 2/27-3/5/2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-The Sea Beast (2022, dir. Chris Williams) This was beyond fun. I'll admit my bias towards pirate-y/sailor-y stuff up front, but even aside from that this was just an amazingly crafted, beautifully animated film with a well-told story. The characters are well voice-acted and vibrantly full of character and life. Jared Harris' Captain Crow in particular was fantastic. This really gave me the vibes of the best animated adventure films from the 90s; it had that sense of wonder and heart that the film's from my childhood did and it struck a chord, for sure. Plus, any film that points out how history books might not be completely trustworthy if the ones holding the power are the ones that wrote the books is a win from me. The only reasons this isn't getting a full 10/10 is because of a few small plot devices that aren't explored fully and the fact that the story isn't anything super new or groundbreaking. Anyone who sees that this is nominated for an Oscar and thinks "why the hell is this here?" clearly hasn't seen it and I recommend that you do so immediately. Score: 9/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.
-Rocky (1976, dir. John G. Avildsen) [REWATCH] I've started a Rocky-thon of sorts in order to prepare to go see Creed III, so naturally, first up would be the original 1976 Best Picture winner. The story of street-kid Rocky Balboa's one-in-a-million chance at becoming a professional boxer almost mirrors writer/lead actor Sylvester Stallone's own journey in getting this very film made, and there is a ton to like about Rocky, even outside of the amazing final scene where he fights Apollo Creed for the first (but most certainly not the last, as we've all come to find out) time. The cinematic brilliance of that final fight and subsequent shouting of "ADRIAN!!" cannot be underplayed. No spoilers, of course (although if you're over the age of 20 and have never seen Rocky before, what are you even doing?). I think my biggest issue with the film is it feels very meandering in its first 90 minutes, even by character study standards, which this most definitely is. You get a feel for who Rocky is as a person pretty early on, then the rest is just watching him mumble-through awkward encounters with Talia Shire's Adrian until, miraculously, that blossoms into a relationship. I just had a hard time connecting with Rocky from a personality level, not to even mention the machismo that will continue to plague the franchise well into its lifespan. Also, and I'll get more into this in my other Rocky reviews, but I really, really don't like Paulie. He served a purpose in this film, but man, I've spent four films wishing someone would just deck him. I'm never gonna knock someone for liking Rocky and thinking it's amazing, because a lot of it is, but I found too much lacking in it to give it higher than the score I gave it. Score: 7/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.
-Rocky II (1979, dir. Sylvester Stallone) [REWATCH] Onto the second installment in this all-time classic franchise, and this time there's a rematch. Personally, the story in Rocky II, that is to say the first 90 minutes of film prior to the big fight, interested me way more than the original. Seeing Rocky struggle with the aftermath of success, and the aftermath of short-lived wealth was so compelling. The dichotomy of wanting to live a quiet, peaceful life with your partner and build something away from the quite dangerous world of boxing with the pull of this thing that has been your world for so long, this thing that is your true calling, made for a much more interesting film than the first. Combining that with an increased presence of Burgess Meredith, who was, without question, the best part of the entire film, had me more invested in the narrative through line of Rocky II more so than I ever was in Stallone's first outing. However, where Rocky II falters is in its attempts to recapture the magical moments of the original film. The training montage in this one is, frankly, just silly, and running up all those steps doesn't seem quite as impressive when a thousand children have also just followed you up there and don't look any worse for wear than you do. The fight at the end of the film, while still not bad, isn't nearly what the first film's was. I've heard fans of the franchise say that the fight in this one is one of the best parts of the film, but I just couldn't get hyped up like I was during Rocky's first match with Apollo Creed. Also, Paulie, who I already hated, has lost his purpose for existing in this world outside of to just be an annoyance and something to be tolerated and worked around, and he continues to be this in an ever-worsening way in the future installments. Overall, a better story, but worse in all of the places that made the first film iconic. Score: 7/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.
-Cocaine Bear (2023, dir. Elizabeth Banks) I won't dwell on this too long, as I posted a full review earlier on in the week. This movie is exactly what it advertises itself as, which is a fun, schlocky romp through B-movie horror-comedy territory. Plenty of vibe-conforming bad CGI and gory bits to please any and everyone who saw the trailer and thought "Well, I gotta see that!" Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. are all great, but Christian Convery is the true Cocaine Bear MVP. My complaints with it are more with the editing and the technical end of things, as well as not being the biggest fan of the film's surprisingly half-boring first act. This one is a fun, wacky, and harmless distraction of a film and I had a blast in the theater watching it. Score: 7/10 Only in theaters. Read my full review here.
-A House Made of Splinters (2022, dir. Simon Lereng Wilmont) This documentary about a temporary children's shelter located just a handful of kilometers away from the Ukraine/Russia war's front lines is heartbreaking and, at times, an incredibly tough watch. It shows a consequence of any war that doesn't necessarily always get a light shined on it, which makes this something truly unique. The Ukraine conflict almost exists only as a backdrop. It is clearly the reason for the sheer number of children being housed in this facility, but it is barely mentioned, nor is that particular war really the focus or the point of the documentary; that is placed squarely on the children. The resilience of these kids is truly wondrous, ranging from younger children who maintain their childlike playful nature, even in these extreme circumstances, to slightly older (but still very much young) children who have clearly had to grow up faster than any child should. As a small look into this tiny-but-not-so-tiny, unexplored corner of the war, A House Made of Splinters was a very eye-opening experience. Score: 8/10 Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.).
-Rocky III (1982, dir. Sylvester Stallone) [REWATCH] This is my favorite Rocky of the classic run, bar none, hands down, no contest. It is easily the most fun, easily the most purely entertaining, and has what, to me, is easily the best fight of those first four films. Mr. T is brilliant as Clubber Lang, and Burgess Meredith and Carl Weathers continue to be scene-stealing masters as Mickey and Apollo Creed. I've read that many, many people (both fans and critics alike) think this is the most rewatchable film in the Rocky franchise and I could not agree more. It's still not just a blazing masterpiece or anything; it falls prey to trying to recapture those iconic moments of the first one just like Rocky II did, although to a lesser degree, and Paulie continues to be a giant bag of useless crap that adds nothing to this franchise whatsoever, Stallone even sees fit to add "racist" to Paulie's seemingly never-ending list of (excuse my language) dogshit qualities, for good measure. All of that aside, I had an absolute blast with Rocky III. It's so close to being an 8/10 it can almost taste it, but there are too many things still dragging it down to earn that extra point. Score: 7/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.
-Magic Mike's Last Dance (2023, dir. Steven Soderbergh) How do you strip the magic out of Magic Mike (puns absolutely intended)? You reduce the supporting cast that made the first two entries, especially the second one, so much fun to mere cameos, and then you take Channing Tatum's Mike Lane to London and place him in a position where he only gets to fully dance twice in the entire film. You also throw in a really contrived and unnecessary voiceover and make the big set piece at the film's end, which has been sold to us as something that's supposed to be truly spectacular, a pretty fun strip show, but not one that's any better than the stuff we got at the end of the previous film. I was also surprised by an uncharacteristically sub-par turn from Salma Hayek Pinault, who is normally a great actress. I'm not entirely sure if it was that her character was poorly written, or if her acting was really not good even for the material she was given, but it shocked me to see a veteran actress like Hayek Pinault give something far below her usual. All was not completely lost, though, as the choreography was great, as usual, and the film has still got a trace of the humor that made XXL so fun. I didn't have the worst time with Magic Mike's Last Dance, but I was disappointed. Soderbergh can do better, and I kind of hope this is, indeed, Magic Mike's last dance. Score: 5/10 Only in theaters.
-Rocky IV (1985, dir. Sylvester Stallone) [REWATCH] I'm sorry, I know Rocky fans the world over consider this one of the good ones, but it's bad. It's pretty bad. The runtime is extremely padded with completely unnecessary montages, a couple of which are just music videos for songs on the film's soundtrack. The fight at the end is not worthy of the really good setup that Ivan Drago gets in the film's first half; it's not a bad fight, per se, but the buildup was so big (like I said, there are so many training montages) for a fight that was largely no more intense than the fight from the original film. Not to mention Paulie's robot, which he manages to insert his sexism into (and the film plays it all for laughs), the fact that both Rocky and Adrian abandon their child ON CHRISTMAS to go fight the big-bad Russian man, leaving little Rocky Jr. in the care of the freaking robot! There's also the unavoidable subject of this being a cold-war propaganda film, which might be the most disappointing part of the whole thing. The franchise seems to be a complete bastardization of itself at this point in its lifespan, and it's getting the points I am giving it for Carl Weathers and the great setup of Drago as a menacing villain alone, even if the payoff for that setup was lackluster. I understand Stallone released a director's cut of the film a couple years ago that re-contextualizes a lot of the film into more of a character study befitting the tone of the first few entries. I'd be very interested to watch that and see if that's true. Score: 4/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.
-The Wicker Man (2006, dir. Neal LaBute) The classic. The infamous. The "not the bees!" one. This was the latest film my college friend group watched as a part of our "Nicolas Cage Fridays" movie night. It is everything that people have built it up to be, although maybe not quite as absolute trash as I've heard. It isn't good by any means, but Cage's acting outside of those few beautiful moments where we get full-Cage isn't really that bad. It's not great, but it's pretty standard stuff. It's an interesting enough story, but none of it ever really comes together in a way that isn't unintentionally hilarious. Also, this has no bearing on my score, but I was not aware that there are two different cuts of this film, a theatrical and an unrated. We watched the theatrical version, apparently, so imagine my surprise when the end of the film comes along and that truly iconic line and scene is just completely skipped over. I was livid. Thankfully, that appears to be the only big difference between the two versions, so it was nothing a quick YouTube pull-up couldn't fix. I had a fun time with The Wicker Man, but I attribute most of that to watching it in a group setting and not to the film itself. I really want to watch the original Christopher Lee film from 1973 that this is a remake of, because I hear that is much better. Score: 4/10 Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) and on DVD and Blu-ray through Warner Bros.
-Children of the Corn (2023, dir. Kurt Wimmer) An unfortunate fun fact about me is that I have, regrettably, seen all 10 (now 11) entries in this godforsaken franchise. It's one of the unfortunate side-effects of being dedicated to watching all Stephen King-related media. I'm not proud of it, but it is a sunk cost fallacy that I cannot separate myself from. That being said, in the realm of horrible Children of the Corn films (which is basically all of them), this one at least had a decent production value and acting that wasn't laughably atrocious. I think more than anything, this entry suffers the most from being just kind of uninteresting. It comes from the angle of showing just how the town became children-of-the-corn'd, which is interesting, in a way, but once the proverbial shit hits the fan it's just more of the same that we've already seen a handful of times (or, if you're a normal person, maybe only seen once). I think the thing that I hate the most is that I know that, inevitably, there will be another one, and I will go see it, because I've made this bed of corn husks for myself, so I might as well lie in it. Score: 3/10 Only in theaters.
I saw Return to Seoul this morning, but don't feel like I've formed my opinion enough to even give a mini-review yet. That will most likely be a full-length one that I will type up tomorrow. I'm also currently in the middle of Argentina, 1985, so look out for that on next week's wrap-up.

The Freedom of Expression Ep 40 - Appeal for buzzword of the year.
K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru with this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome. Oh, thats noisy! *Adjusting chair*
J: Haha
K: How noisy.
J: I feel like I've been seeing you every day.
K: Yeah, what could that be?
T: Yeah.
J: Yeah, its strange.
K: Yeh, I feel like I saw you yesterday.
J: Thats right.
T: Yeah.
K: Did something happen, I wonder?
J: Yeah, something might have...
K: Haha.
J: Anyhow, I drank too much last night, and I have quite a hangover today.
K: Oh really? Yeh, your face somehow looks a bit swollen.
J: Right?
K: Haha
J: *To Tasai* Have you been drinking? For the end of the year?
T: Not at all.
J: Oh, you havn't? How about you Kaoru?
K: Oh, I have.
J: Have you? Not too much though?
K: No, I've been ok.
Kami: *sneezes*
J: I just heard a sneeze!
K,T: Hahaha.
J: Kami sneezed like, 'Ahhchoo'. Haha, what great timing to sneeze.
K: Ok, so this week, its still a little early, but lets  go with this topic. Joe, could you..?
J: Yes. 'Early predictions for buzzword of the year. The most symbolic word of the year is...?' Well, there have already been 30 nominations released for the buzzword of the year. But, well, there are predictions, and most of the words for 2020 are corona related. At the moment the prediction for #1 is 'social distance', #2 is 'the Three C's', #3 is 'Stay Home', #4 is 'Covid crisis', #6 is 'Abe no mask', #9 is 'Amaebi'..
K: Its 'Amabie'. (*This is the name of a spirit which is believed to ward off plagues*)
J: Ah, Amabie, yes. What did I say?
K: Ama ebi (*sweet shrimp*).
T: Very delicious stuff will come.
J: That sounds odd.
K: haha
J: Uh, #10 is 'State of Emergency'. 8 out of the top 10 are corona related. There are also others such as 'Go To Campaign', 'PCR test', and 'Self-restraint police' etc within the nominations.
K: I see.
J: What do you two think about a buzzword for this year?
T: Was there something..?
J: In terms of this show?
K: Oh, on this show?
J: Yeh, something from this show.
K: Well, there should be something.
J: Haha, yeah.
K: A lot of things were said off the cuff.
T: Yeah, haha.
J: I've a feeling our buzzword of the year might be something that Kami has said, haha.
T: There must be so many things, but..
K: You somehow can't remember, right?
T: Yeah, I can't remember.
J: Yeh, I can't remember either.
T: Its strange.
J: Does this mean the stuff Kami has said has left no impression on me?
K: Haha
J: Even though he talks a lot..
T: Yeah.
K: There must be something..
T: Yeah, there must be.
Kami: I say a lot of good stuff.
J: Good stuff?
Kami: Yeah, I say good stuff.
J: Im sorry Kami, you havn't left much of an impression.
Kami: I havn't?
J: Sorry.
K: He changes quite a lot doesn't he?
J: Yeah, he has no sense of consistency.
T: Haha, thats true.
J: ???*1
T: There is like '¥1000 p/h' with Kami.
J: '¥1000 p/h'!
T: One of Kami's words.
K: Or 'Night-shift'.
J: Oh, 'Night-shift', right.
T: He kinda has a 'Kani kōsen/The Crab Cannery Ship' feel to him. (*A 1929 proletarian novel by Kobayashi Takiji*)
J: Haha, he has a sense of Kobayashi Takiji, right?
T: Yeah, haha.
J: But as for this show, we did mention Hanshin quite a bit.
K: Hmmm, well...
J: Not enough to make it a buzzword of the year?
K: Sometimes.
J: Only sometimes? Does Tokyo Sports have anything, like articles that were a big hit, outside of corona?
T: Well, there was a surprising amount of negative news.
J: Right?
T: Things about all the suffering that took place this year.
J: Wasn't there any really silly Tokyo Sportsy stories that took off?
T: I don't think there was this year.
J: Wasn't there?
T: Because its always been about Tenryu.(*Former Pro-wrestler*)
K: Hahaha.
T: Sorry about that everyone, this new Reiwa era has been...
J: Is Tenryu still active?
T: Haha, no..
K: No, he's not.
T: The viewers might be ??? *2
J: By Tenryu, you mean Tenryu Genichiro, right?
T: Yes.
K: But he does appear on TV quite a bit.
T: For any one who doesn't know what we're taking about, we'll just say he's on tv sometimes.
K: Choshu san too, right? (*Former Pro-wrestler*)
T: Yeah.
J: Ah, Choshu san? Yeah.
T: We run stories about the secret 'Tenryu metal bat' incident, and stuff.
K: But we want that kind of thing, right?
J: Yeh, everyone expects its to be corona corona corona, but on the other hand if you go with Tenryu..
K: Haha, Tenryu for buzzword of the year??
J: Yeah, haha. Wouldn't it be great if our buzzword for the year was 'Tenryu'?
T: I think it would be for Tokyo Sports...Tenryu, or..'Big boobs' or something like that.
J: Ahh. Well, we need something for this show, The Freedom of Expression. Like, 'Night shift'?
T: Hmm, 'night shift' or..I feel like you've said quite a few puns, Joe.
J: I probably have.
K: But actually, last time...Kami was saying 'small boobs' quite a lot.
J, T: Hahaha
J: He was! The buzzword of the year: Small boobs?
T: There's quite a lot of things 'lacking' about this show too though, isn't there? Haha.
K: Yeh, lacking good taste. It can't be helped.
J: Well, yeh, Kami is vulgar. We can't change that. Isn't there anything you can think of, Kaoru? Anything unforgettable..a symbol of 2020?
K: I feel like there should be.
T: Oh, but there was Hosojimaya too!
J: Hosojimaya, yeh. Carbohydrate + carbohydrate.
K: That was your..
T: Your favourite set meal right?
J: I always end up saying that...Carbs + carbs.
T: Oh, I remember one. When Kaoru was eating ramen at Hosojimaya, he said 'I'm collecting all the onions in one spoon'.
K: Hahaha
J: Collecting all the onions in one spoon?
T: It was that delicious.
J: When you were drinking the soup?
K: Yeah.
T: Yeh, he was like, 'The onions are so good, I can get them all into one spoon!'. That one stands out for me.
J: Haha 'Collecting the onions in one spoon', the buzzword for 2020?
K: But I do sit there eating that for a long time, the onions and stuff.
T: Yeh, you were saying, 'This is so good'.
J: Why is that? You are not remembering being poor as a kid?
K: I just like onions.
J: You like onions?
T: They are delicious.
J: I like them too. I still go to Hosojimaya sometimes.
K: Oh, do you?
J: Yeah. They said they've had a few customers who saw the restaurant on this show. So thank you for that.
K: It'd be nice to go to some other places lIke that. A Chinese restaurant or something.
J: Yeah, it would. I wanna go to Chinese restaurants so much that the buzzword for the show next year will be 'Chinese restaurants'!
T: Haha
K: Im not sure about that just yet...
J: Oh, is that a bit too much? haha. But, I don't know why I said 'Sweet prawn' (amaebi), instead of Amabie. When I shake my head, I can feel the alcohol sploshing around.
K: But when this came out at first, we didn't know anything about it, did we?
T: I still don't really. What is it?
K: Im not that sure..
J: Its like a spirit to protect against infectious disease. I don't know where this came from. Its like a strange looking character. Amabie..
T: But Joe-style is Ama ebi.
K: Was sweet prawn a thing this year? haha.
J: I messed up..
K: Its the first I've heard of it!
T: Haha, yeh.
J: Well, yeh, sweet prawn didn't really come up in our lives during 2020. But don't you wanna come up with something that is unrelated to corona?
T: Yeah.
K: Well, yeh.
J: Kami, do you have any ideas?
Kami: As for me? I kinda want this one to do well...'Ojikun' (*A trend of younger women falling for middle aged men*). Its not in the nominations, is it?
T: Oh, Ojikyun, yeah.
J: What is Ojikyun?
T: There was this tv drama with a bunch of middle aged men, and the younger women thought they were cute. Like they fell for them.
K: Oh, I remember something like that.
T: Yeah, it was a manga too.
J: Ojikyun...that sounds good.
K: *points at Joe* You think you are old enough for Ojikyun?
J: I really want that to happen.
K: Well, that makes us all Ojikyun.
J: Haha, no no, thats totally me.
T: Joe, you are still young!
J: No no, really. Lets go with 'Ojikyun'.
K: You keep saying we should go with everything, haha.
J: Well, you see, the alcohol is affecting me today, it really is.
K: Ok, lets appeal for suggestions...
J: Oh, yeah.
K:...for this show's buzzword of the year.
T: Ah, I see.
K: Lets see which things have left an impression on the viewers.
T: Well, for me its Kaoru collecting all those onions. So, we want to know what other things have stood out to the viewers.
J: Yeah. I liked the hoodie.
T: Oh, the Tokyo Sports hoodie?
J: Yes.
T: Oh, thank you.
J: Tokyo Sports hoodie. Is it a buzzword, or maybe a trending item?
T: Oh, that makes me so happy.
K:  Is it selling?
T: Well, thanks to this show, and Joe modelling it..
J: No no no.
T: Joe, the fashion leader.
J: Im not a fashion leader at all. I only ever wear black.
K: Hahaha
T: Is it Kyary pamyu pamyu or Joe Yokomizu? haha
J: What are you talking about? haha. Okay, I'll go with 'Tokyo Sports Hoodie' for the buzzword.
T: Thank you. ??? *3
J: Haha. Thank you ???
T: Yeah.
J: So, lets ask the viewers for thier suggestions.
K: Yeah, lets.
J: Which was the best word on the show this year, or the most symbolic.
T: Sounds good.
K: So, should we choose the one with the most votes as the winner?
J: I guess thats how it would go.
T: Well, we can't forget about what Kami wants..
K: So, like we can choose one, and if we remember it...We won't just go by which had the most suggestions.
T, J: Yeh, yeh, yeh.
K: And we can give one of the radio stickers as a present to that person.
J: Oh, those stickers! Thats a good idea.
Kami: Um, this might be a bit different from a buzzword, but Dir en grey did that online live show, right?
T, K, J: Yes.
Kami: Not the online live, I mean the streamed setlist chosen by members.
T, K, J: Oh yes
Kami: When the new song 'World of Mercy' was played, everyone said, 'Its Tashiro!'. (*Controvesial former tv star Tashiro Masashi, nicknamed 'Marcy', prosecuted for filming up womens' skirts and drug use. Marcy/マーシー and Mercy/マーシー have the same pronunciation in Japanese.*)
T: Ah, I see, haha.
K: Oh, that. Marcy..
Kami: Yes, Marcy/Mercy, its Tashiro. Could that be a buzzword?
T: I mean, what can we say about that?
J: I guess it is...
K: Well, it is, but if a regular person saw it, they would think of that Marcy (*as opposed to Dir's Mercy).
J: Haha, 'that Marcy'? Should we include 'Tashiro'?
T: I mean, it is a thing amongst the fans.
Kami: Within this show...Tashiro.
T: Online slang is pretty interesting, right?
J: Yeah.
K: Lets just put this Mercy/Marcy talk to one side, shall we? Haha.
J: Really. We ended up talking about this kind of thing before we even realised it.
K: But yeah, Id like to decide on a buzzword for the year for the Freedom of Expression, so please send us your suggestions.
J: Where should they send them to?
K: Er, in the comments for this vid, or on my twitter. I'll write a tweet about this, so people can reply to that. Ok, well, lets finish here this week. Please subscribe. Thank you very much.

Weekly Update 28/02/2022
Good evening!
It's the end of February, coming into March, and I'm so excited for what I want to work on the next little while. Happy St David's Day for the 1st of March, if you celebrate, Cymru am byth!
The past week I've been playing Samurai Warriors 4, and to my delight it's even more homoerotic than Samurai Warriors 2 which I grew up with, with a lot more complexity to the characters and a lot of new characters and character angles too, so I'm really enjoying it. If you like that sort of hack-and-slash game, I definitely do recommend it, and I shall almost certainly be playing SW5 at some point.
I'm currently watching Halston, which is on Netflix and is a miniseries about the gay fashion designer, played by Ewan McGregor, which I definitely recommend if you want something a bit mindless to put on - it's trashy and it's fun, and while it's not very deep and doesn't do anything interesting with any of its characters, I've really been enjoying having it on in the background. Some other gems I've enjoyed this week are:
SHUDŌ (2015, dir. To-Anh Bach, Charles Badiller, and Hugo Weiss) - This is a short film, it's literally only a couple of minutes long, and it's about two samurai, once lovers, fighting to the death. Such a lot of emotion and heart packed into such a tiny little piece, and I can't recommend it enough.
The Wretched (2019, dir. Brett Pierce & Drew T. Pierce) - This is a teen horror flick that does some fun stuff with the conventions of monstrous witches, mind control, and some interesting character stuff. I really enjoyed the twist, and I really liked how real a lot of the characters feel - the protagonist in particular is flawed in ways I appreciated, and I liked that a lot.
They Live In The Grey (2022, dir. Abel Vang & Burlee Vang) - This is a new Shudder release, and I really liked it. It's quite slow-paced, so definitely put some time aside to really watch and digest it if you give it a go, but it did so much interesting work with trauma and the isolation of not being able to voice or verbalise that trauma, especially because you feel insecure about communicating it or don't know how to word it. I love what it does with ghosts and haunting, and all the dialogue and character interaction feels so real, to the point of being really quite painful.
The Silenced (2011, dir. Hwang Dong-hyuk) - This one is fucking heavy, but it's a drama based on real life, starring Gong Yoo as a teacher who comes to a school for Deaf children and uncovers several cases of CSA. It's primarily about the court case and the ways in which the process is unjust and corrupt, on top of being in various ways retraumatising for the victims - it's so well done, and Gong Yoo really does just. Nail the role, as is his wont.
Some other stuff from this week that I enjoyed were The Ice King, Nobody Knows I'm Here, District 9, Splinter, and The Hole.

May 1: The Prestige (2006) (Review)
Are you watching closely?
Tumblr media
This movie...this movie. I like Christopher Nolan, and he specializes in these mind-bending sort of films. Haven’t seen Memento yet, but Inception and Interstellar definitely fit that bill WELL. And Nolan’s definitely good at it, with this film now added to that list.
Gotta say, I wish there were more movies like this. You know, about magicians in the past. Plus, I’d really love to see a movie with more scientific magicians. Like, inventors who use their scientific acumen to perform insane feats. Really lean into that Arthur C. Clarke angle, y’know? I think it’d be pretty cool, honestly.
Tumblr media
Also, I haven’t seen The Greatest Showman, but I’m sure that Jackman gives off some similar vibes here. And before you say “YOU NEED TO SEE THEGREATESTSHOWMAAAAN”, I’m just gonna say: P.T Barnum does NOT deserve to have a musical made about him starring Hugh Jackman. Dude was an animal-abusing racist MONSTER, who did a LOT of fucked up shit in the pursuit of money. Dude rented a blind elderly black woman (while slavery was illegal in New York, mind you) and sold tickets to see her, claiming that she was the nurse of baby George Washington, and 161 years old. When she died of old age, he sold tickets to her fucking AUTOPSY! And that was the VERY BEGINNING of his career. FUCK P.T. BARNUM.
Tumblr media
...Anyway. Let’s talk about The Prestige, huh? Review time! Check out Part One and Part Two of the Recap, if you’re interested!
Review
Tumblr media
Cast and Acting: 9/10
Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, David Bowie, Andy Serkis, and Rebecca Hall. HOOOOO BABY! These six are the tanks of this movie, and they’re all excellent in their roles. I knew that Hugh Jackman had more acting range than he’s often given credit for, but this is the first time American audiences could see that range, and he’s fantastic with it. Bale is kind of Bale in some ways, but definitely disappears into the role of Borden pretty seamlessly. Which, again, is pretty much Christian Bale in general. I could say the same about Caine, but he REALLY disappeared into this role. Usually, I still see Michael Caine when I watch him, but this was all Cutter all the time here. Bowie as Tesla was surprisingly great, watching Andy Serkis’ Alley has fun, and Rebecca Hall’s tragic Sarah is basically the emotional core of the movie. But where’s Scarlett Johansson, you ask? Well, she was...OK. I really don’t think she was great in this movie, but it’s not like she was bad. Still, that’s where the missing point is; with her.
Tumblr media
Plot and Writing: 9/10
I mean...come on. This plot is top notch. Based on the book written by Christopher Priest, and adapted for film by Jonathan and Christopher Nolan, this is a great story, and the twists are fantastic throughout. Genuinely didn’t expect the Borden twist...although I did figure out the Angier plot point pretty quickly, one the purpose of the machine was revealed. Yeah, soon as I figured that out, it was all over. I think the Nolans figured that that would happen, though. In any case, this is still a well-written film, full of references to the truth throughout. If you’re interested, watch this movie FIRST, then go on YouTube and find some video essays. You’ll see what I mean pretty quickly.
Tumblr media
Directing and Cinematography: 8/10
I’ll be honest: I do like Christopher Nolan, but he’s never really struck me with a particular directorial style. The more notable part of his direction revolves around his film concepts than anything else. Now, that isn’t AT ALL to say that Nolan’s direction is bad. On the contrary: it’s quite good! But I’d also be lying if I said that the direction of The Prestige really stuck out to me. Much as I hate to take away any points here, this just wasn’t super-notable to me. Wally Pfister’s cinematography is also fantastic, but equally as notable. So, good grade here, but not perfect.
Tumblr media
Production and Art Design: 9/10
Given the fact that this film is almost solely dependent on the idea of good-looking tricks and costumes, this is a VERY well-produced and designed film. Chronistically authentic and convincing, this is simply a goo looking movie. And the electrical effects are cool! There’s a lot to love here, is what I’m saying.
Tumblr media
Music and Editing: 8/10
Music’s good, and definitely sets an eerie tone that fits the film. As I write these reviews, I listen to the soundtrack again to put me in the mood for the movie, and it works. This soundtrack is also VERY good at knowing when to use silence to emphasize something, as showcased especially well during the very end of the movie. As for the editing...OK, real talk? It’s good most of the time, but it’s also kinda choppy half of the time as well. I get that the plot is suppose to take you all over the place, but...sometimes I don’t know how necessary the edits are. Like, showing Borden reacting to the journal seemed unnecessary sometimes. A LOT of flashbacks, is what I’m saying.
Tumblr media
Y’know...I think an 86% Is pretty good.
But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I thought I’d like it...well, a little more. I mean, again, 86% is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s definitely lower than I expected. I think that, once the euphoria of the twists and the ending dies down, you’re still left with a great movie...but not a perfect one. And I think that’s still completely fine, because this movie is still a STELLAR film.
Do I recommend thisWATCHITNOW. Sorry, uh...yes. Yes, I recommend it whole-heartedly. It’s a fantastic goddamn movie, and you should see it at least once, for the experience. And trust me, when you watch it once, you’re gonna want to watch it twice. It’s that engaging, and it’s that good.
Tumblr media
So, now what? That’s the first of the lo-fi sci-fi done, and it’s focused upon an interesting technological advancement: cloning. What’s another good advancement to look at? Well...why not something a little more unusual? Something not seen in the films very commonly. Something...something...uh...wait. What was I saying?
I’ve forgotten.

Terminator Genisys (2015) dir. Alan Taylor. 7.5/10
Okay, at least this isn’t the same thing as The Terminator. This is a lot of time travel thinking that I could not have come up with.
I can’t believe Lee Byung Hun is in this.
Pops is my favorite.
O’Brien is probably me.
Spoiler: [About Judgement Day happening and Kyle Reese being born after it. One day, he gets saved from a Terminator by John Connor. He didn’t realize it was a Terminator since it now has skin. He grows up to fight alongside John and be his right hand man. Tonight, the Colorado Offensive will take down all of Skynet while a Los Angeles Assault will stop the weapon they will use after its destruction. John and Kyle join the LA assault. They talk of what they’ll do afterwards and Kyle wants to rebuild his parent’s home while John gets a cold beer. They infiltrate and fight as Skynet uses a time travel device to send in a Model 101/T-800 Terminator to kill Sarah Connor in 1984. Skynet gets shut down, but the Terminator is already in the past. Everyone volunteers to use the next charge to go save Sarah. John asks Kyle why he should get to go when he volunteers and he responds with how he knows Sarah from what John taught him. The Terminator gets to Griffith Observatory and goes to some men to get their clothing. He is attacked and fought by another Terminator though. He is eventually shot at and destroyed by Sarah Connor. Kyle goes through the machine and right before he leaves, he sees John getting attacked. On Kyle’s journey through time, he starts remembering memories from his alternate version self. It’s of his 13th birthday and of Sarah telling him to go in a straight line while pointing it out on his palm. His other self looks into the mirror and tells him that Genisys is Skynet and when it goes online, judgement day will occur. Kyle arrives in 1984 and steals a homeless man’s pants until a cop starts chasing him. The cop attacks him and Kyle discovers it to be a T-1000. Kyle runs into a clothing store and gets himself dressed. He’s pursued until two real cops arrest him. One of the cops gets killed by the T-1000 while the other hides with Kyle. Kyle is able to get him to uncuff him and let him know that it is a human killing robot. They are saved by a truck driven by Sarah Connor. The T-1000 pursues the truck. Kyle learns that Sarah knows about him, John, and the Terminators. She says that the original 1984 no longer exists and she got rid of the Terminator already. When Kyle sees the other Terminator that is helping Sarah, he goes to shoot him. This other Terminator knocks him unconscious. They drive on and he talks to her about mating with Kyle, but she says they have to fall in love and there are other things. Kyle wakes up and learns that this Terminator saved her life when she was 9 and it ages with him. It doesn’t know who sent him back because the files were erased. Kyle doesn’t trust him. Sarah calls him Pops. Pops manages to shoot off a hinge on the truck that the T-1000 used to track them. The T-1000 pursues them and they fight him off until it crashes and burns. They get to a warehouse and Kyle talks about seeing John attacked. The T-1000 then arrives and Pops fights it. The defeated Terminator is awoken again by the T-1000 and it fights Kyle. Kyle manages to decapitate it. Sarah gets ready for a trap she has been preparing. She then sees two Kyles approach her. They try to convince her that they are real and she shoots the T-1000 on the foot off of chance. She then gets Kyle to run and shoots the ceiling. It causes acid to rain down and inhibit the T-1000. Pops keeps the T-1000 in the rain by holding him up. Sarah and Pops show Kyle a time travel machine that they had created. They are to head to 1997 to stop Skynet for good. She doesn’t want to fulfill her destiny of just being saved and giving birth to the leader of the resistance. Kyle agrees, but says they should go to 2017 because of his memory. She doesn’t agree since it’s just a dream and Pops clears up that he is remembering a different past, which is their future. He says if John Connor was killed or compromised, Kyle would theoretically get the other memory. Kyle takes the chip and Sarah threatens him to give it back. Kyle convinces Sarah by pointing at her palm and telling her to go in a straight line. As they get changed to get into the
portal, Kyle tells Sarah about what John is like. He also says he’ll do anything for her. Sarah hugs Pops goodbye even though he says it is a meaningless gesture. Pops will live life the long way until he meets them in 2017 because he doesn’t have enough skin to last the time travel. In 2017, they appear in the middle of the freeway and cause an explosion and crashes. They are taken in by the police, who get them referred to Homeland Security since they believe it was terrorism. In the truck to the station, Sarah talks of being attacked by the liquid metal when she was younger. Her cabin in Big Bear exploded and her dad told her to swim in a straight line. When she got to the dock, Pops saved her. Detective O’Brien is dismissed by the lieutenants since they think he’s a drunk. O’Brien wants to see the suspects because he believes them to be time travelers and shows images of the scene and how it wasn’t a bomb. Kyle and Sarah are handcuffed as they are tended to by the doctors. The worker handling Sarah’s stitches talks about Genisys and they question him. They learn that it is a global operating system that controls everything. O’Brien talks to them and mentions that he’s met them before and that he was the cop from back then. The lieutenants know there is no record of Sarah and Kyle through their prints and facial recognition. They do connect Kyle to a Kyle Reese, who is 12. O’Brien understands. Kyle manages to steal a tool and releases him and Sarah from the cuffs when no one is around. They then see John Connor arrive. Pops arrives at the station with a teddy bear. John gets the cops to be inhibited as they escape. Sarah wants proof that this John isn’t a shapeshifter and he talks about memories with them that can only be true if he were him. Pops uses the security system to find them. John accidentally calls Kyle Dad and he learns his role. Pops shows up and shoots John. Kyle goes to hurt Pops, but is stopped by him. Sarah aims at Pops until they see John form back into shape. John explains that he’s not a machine or a man anymore. He’s become more than that when he was taken by Skynet. When Sarah brings up the argument that they can’t be killed or he’ll die, he says they’re now exiles in time and anyone can be killed. Pops fights John until they get stuck on a MRI machine because of the magnetic field. Sarah goes back for Pops and gets him out after Kyle shuts down the magnet. They then turn it back up on high to stop John. John wants Kyle to join him, but he leaves. As they drive away, Pops talks of a new infiltration unit that infects humans with machine phase matter. It can’t be reversed since it’s on a cellular level and John’s now a Terminator. John talks with the people working at Genisys and they thank him for the advanced code that helps their progress. Danny Dyson is the best at Genisys and doesn’t even understand the code. They’re currently working on a time travel machine. Danny talks during the opening to thank everyone and announces how a billion users preordered Genisys. Sarah brings Kyle to a safehouse that she showed Pops since her dad used to bring her here. It has many rooms that Pops filled up with weapons during their absence. They get ready and Sarah sees old memorabilia of her childhood that Pops kept. Kyle sees the aging in Pops’s body. They plan to blow up Genisys, but Pops didn’t know about John Connor. He brings down a large speaker and creates a contraption that can affect John Connor like the MRI did. It prevents his particles from scattering. Kyle talks to Sarah about how she lied about their relationship and she talks of how John had lied even longer. She mentions that Kyle would die after 2 days of her conceiving John and she doesn’t like having no choices in life. John shows up to the safe house and mentions that he knows that this is where she and grandpa used to come to. They fight John and cause an explosion as they escape by a school bus. John catches up to the bus and attacks them while cops pursue the bus. The brakes are pulled out and Sarah can’t stop the bus. Pops is taken
away from his contraption and follows in a police car. They eventually crash and are dangling off the SF Bay Bridge. Kyle gets the contraption and hits John. John falls to the edge of the bus. Kyle and Sarah are saved by Pops as the bus falls to the waters. They are then arrested. The 12 year Kyle and his family are brought in, but they don’t recognize Kyle besides him looking similar to the dad. Pops sees through the double sided window as a Terminator shoots the cops. Pops stops her as she wounds O’Brien. O’Brien saves Sarah as she sends off Kyle and his family. She tells Kyle to go in a straight line as she points on his palm. The group gathers weapons and gets away by helicopter. O’Brien is told to run while John comes to attack them. John then pursues them with a different helicopter. Pops exits the helicopter and causes John’s helicopter to crash. Kyle and Sarah crash at Genisys. John kills the witnesses and calls off the alarms at Genisys. Pops stops John momentarily as they go to set up bombs. Kyle learns of Genisys’s time machine. They set up the bombs and shoot the projections of Skynet trying to stop them. John manages to get to Sarah and hurts her. Sarah throws the detonator to Pops to blow them up, but he can’t kill Sarah Connor. He hands the detonator to Kyle, but John goes for it. They fight until Kyle and Sarah get stuck behind some doors. They have 4 minutes until Skynet is uploaded. John manages to stop Pops until Sarah and Kyle fight John together. Pops uses his contraption to hold onto John and get into the time machine. They turn on the field generator and Sarah is held back by Kyle as Pops has to stay in there with John. Pops tells Kyle to protect Sarah. Kyle and Sarah rush to get to the bunker that can survive the blasts. Pops falls out of the field and lands in mimetic polyalloy while John gets destroyed, along with the entire Genisys building. Kyle talks to Sarah about how she can choose her life now and Pops breaks into their room. He reveals that he’s even better now. They head to the 12 year Kyle and older Kyle tells him to repeat a message to himself constantly. Sarah and Kyle kiss.]

Best First Time Watches of April 2020
Casablanca (1942) (dir. Michael Curtiz) (USA)
Tumblr media
Yes, this is really my first time seeing it. Yes, it's incredible. Yes, the lines in the context of the film became more and more heartbreaking. Yes, I nearly burst into tears at Rick and Ilse's flashbacks. Yes, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are two of the greatest actors of Hollywood's Golden Age.
Come and See (1985) (dir. Elem Klimov) (Soviet Union)
Tumblr media
The most brutal and horrifying war film ever made. The sound editing and cinematography are borderline sickening at some points. Makes most other war films look like kid shit.
Goodbye, First Love (2011) (dir. Mia Hansen-Løve) (France)
Tumblr media
One of the best films about heartbreak. It's honest about the feelings that come after failed romance, especially after the first person one falls in love with. It's never conclusive, and moments with a new partner can feel unsatisfactory. Depressing, wonderful movie.
The Hunger (1983) (dir. Tony Scott) (USA)
Tumblr media
An erotic, visceral vampire film that starts off slow and seductive, and becomes a saddening film about aging, addiction, and wanting desperately to not be alone. The "Bela Lugosi's Dead" sequence is an all-timer. We miss you, Tony Scott.
The Lady Vanishes (1938) (dir. Alfred Hitchcock) (Britain)
Tumblr media
Hilarious and fun mystery film concerning the disappearance of a lady on a train. Each character is memorable, and this is surprisingly one of Hitch's funniest films.
Near Dark (1987) (dir. Kathryn Bigelow) (USA)
Tumblr media
A gory and beautifully shot vampire Western featuring some of the best music from Tangerine Dream. And Bill Paxton plays a jackass vampire. What the hell's not to love?
Pink Flamingos (1972) (dir. John Waters) (USA)
Tumblr media
One of the most disgusting films ever made. Incest, shit-eating, and the works are in this. It's also one of the funniest and most daring in terms of its content and filmmaking. Waters is a fucking genius.
Southland Tales (2007) (dir. Richard Kelly) (USA)
Tumblr media
Confusing? Yes. Weird and maybe a little too on the nose sometimes? Sure. But also one of the most interesting and honest looks at America post-9/11 and its blatant nationalism disguised as patriotism through war and media. Also hilarious as fuck.
Tomboy (2011) (dir. Cèline Sciamma) (France)
Tumblr media
One of the most empathetic and accepting films about with gender non-conformity I've seen. Zoè Heràn's performance is immaculate, it shows so much range, anxiety, and happiness.
What's Up, Doc? (1973) (dir. Peter Bogdonavich) (USA)
Tumblr media
This movie is hysterical. Every 30 seconds there was a joke that I couldn't stop laughing at. A caper, a screwball comedy, and an action film all at once, filled with incredible, side-splitting performances, some of the best set design of '70s cinema, and just pitch-perfect direction and blocking.

GET TO KNOW THE BLOGGER.
✧ can be used for RP and non-RP blogs to get to know a bit about the person behind the screen!
Tumblr media
1. FIRST NAME:  i used to go by my middle name, nina, but now i go by pacifica or paci.
2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: i have a bunch of weird ailments that honestly are just wild. like sometimes my nerves make me spasm or collapse or i’ll become hyperflexible. my kidneys decided they were lonely so they are... snuggled together... and i’ve had cancer a few times. it’s exhausting.
3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON:  - smile /  facial features. outside of aesthetics, you can tell if someone is superficial or genuine through the intensity of their smile, or if they’re fabricating their appearance or background. i wouldn’t want someone to pretend for me. i want them to be how they are. - personal care. i don’t have preferences on hair / grooming outside of being well-kempt. file your nails & clean them ( like if ur a mechanic or factory worker or other types of physical labor, i get it-- but like an office worker with black nails? ick ), brush/comb/finger detangle/style your hair, make sure your clothes are reasonably presentable... clean, like you actively tried to come up with an ensemble. - physique. not saying people need to be like 8 pack or straight out the gym. nor am i saying i need someone to be like mega massive or mega thin. but preferably someone who like... is comfortable in the skin they’re in, and cares about their body. at the least, cares about what goes in their body and how much their body does for them.
4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF:  haribo snacks.
5. A FOOD YOU HATE: i cannot handle the smell of mustard or mayonnaise. i will literally walk out of a room.
6. GUILTY PLEASURE:  i try to cut out needless carbs and snack foods, but y’all........ throw some good naan or pita at me and i’m a sucker. i love my hot cheetos and takis, pls don’t take them from me.
7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN:  a sweater and panties tbh. i’ve turned into that basic single person in their 20s. if i’m cold i’ll throw on sweatpants too.
8. SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS:  i vastly prefer serious relationships, but there’s got to be a lot of build up to it for me to pursue someone in that manner. that being said, idk why, apparently i seem unapproachable or intimidating, but i’ve always had to ask out the person i liked.... ask me out first, u fools. i’ve tried to do flings but like i always feel guilty afterward bc i’m not invested, i just pretend hoping maybe i’ll fool myself in the process and i don’t lmao. that being said, it’s been like over a year since i’ve last dated, and two years had passed between that partner and the previous one.
9. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: nothing. maybe switch my triple minor to an interdisciplinary double major because that sounds cooler in this point in my life. but other than that? i feel like i did well with the cards that were handed to me. they shaped me into who i am now. and now i’m trying to continue to be a person past me would be proud of. i want to live a life with little to no regrets. to pursue everything i can while i have the opportunity to.
10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: physically, yes. emotionally, it depends. my coworkers are always either thrilled to see me or are like “ it’s paci being over the top cute. ” i love coming into the room to give hugs or do random acts of service or to shower someone with surprise gifts just to say i appreciate them. however, i can be emotionally distant at times and i don’t like to involve people into things. i still feel guilty on most occasions when i vent,  even though i know it’s healthy to do. i feel like it’s not other people’s responsibility to deal with my problems or have to endure them, even if it’s as little involvement as listening. such an attitude isn’t great, but... at least i can recognize that now? lmao. u know. baby steps. i’m still learning to trust and let people in. when my former best friend broke my heart it really messed me up in a lot of ways.
11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: i love pocahontas, mulan, princess and the frog, and peter pan starring mary martin. i’ve been watching that specific peter pan since like..... birth......... and it’s still one of my favorite films.
12. FAVORITE BOOK:  dante’s divine comedy.
13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: a long-haired cat, preferably a tortoise color. i’ve always thought munchkin cats were the cutest. i’d want something that is as independent and self-sufficient as i am.
14. TOP FIVE FICTIONAL SHIPS [IF YOU ARE AN RP BLOG, YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN SHIPS AS WELL]:  yufi & age-appropriate love and joy. tseng also deserves love. & literally everyone in ace attorney could get it..... except dahlia hawthorne, forget her. also... all the important people in devil may cry deserve someone. so.... that’s what i have for you.
15. PIE OR CAKE: pie. i don’t eat nearly enough of it. kinda underrated in the pnw, i feel like? but in the midwest we loved pies... kinda miss that.
16. FAVORITE SCENT:  sandalwood, vanilla, lavender, and gentle scents like  ‘ ocean ’  or  ‘ linens ’.
17. CELEBRITY CRUSH:  shrugs? no one atm. i do not keep up with pop culture these days. can i count kyo from dir en grey? i’ve thought he was hot for the last 15 years and counting........ 14 y/o me was really like “ he’s the one ” too!!
18. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: i love visiting friends. and like... idk? japan is still interesting, as is italy and greece and jerusalem. but i don’t have like... a burning urge to go anywhere. i’d like to return to vietnam & cambodia at some point as well. people tell me melbourne is my kind of vibe, but... i’ll get there when i get there.
19. INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT:  ambivert. though for all that i project in personality, i do take a lot of time to myself to kind of recharge, as you will.
20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY:  i do. but i still like scary games bc i enjoy the thrill and chase. suspense is really cool-- gore is not, imo.
21. IPHONE OR ANDROID:  android. i’ve been using samsung galaxy phones since like 2013 and i’m not going back now. i had an ipad once and........ i’m over that. but i’m not like gonna participate in the dumb android vs apple debate........ we’re adults and it’s 2020, c’mon now. put ur energy into something else.

24. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS: pay off my loans, throw like half of it in savings for it to grow, give some to my mum bc she deserves to live comfortably, and..... take some time off work to just relax and rediscover myself. while work does give me purpose, it also takes away from my creative pursuits so like... that blows.

May felt longer than it needed to be. Thought I did finally get a job and finished my frist year of college. Now I just stuffed with the heat wait for work....
Tumblr media
'*•.¸♡ Movies♡¸.•*'
El Camnio Dir. Vince Gilligan
I watch this a few days after fishing brecking bad, and the only way i could describe it would be sadly satisfying. I'm just watching this chraater who was beaten down constantly by life and just desperately trying to move on, and it is just so good. I could talk for ages about how tod treats jesse and what it means. errgrgegegeg. 8/10
Tumblr media
Young Adult(2011) Dir. Jason Reitman
The Meyerowitz Stories Dir. Noah Baumbach
Knowing it from the one quote about parents you always see on Tumbler Post. Ya know the one. But ya it so good. I love how it expore, not nessaily abuse parents, but just shitty and how that lack of love or support can affect someone. Thought i would say that for one of the siblings (kinda spoliers?) it make a point about how I forgot they were in a way there sibilng never was and then... never gave them a story?? Like it was just like there were there, talk about their reasonship with there shitty father, and then move on to how it effcted the other two sllblings. While with the other two they showed many time there reaship with their father. I dont i was just confused that one part. It's still a good movie. I'm just kinda confused. 8/10
I liked this. It feels like watching a train wreck, someone who so stuck in the past that they think that everyone is as stuck as they are, and how that stubborn can affect every aspect of a person life. Idk i think it's really interesting to think about, esapalliy the main charater. 8/10
Tumblr media
White Chicks (2004) Dir. Keenen Ivory Wayans
Silly goofy thought it was funny. 2000 in the best and worst ways 5/10
Tumblr media
The Lovebirds Dir. Michael Showalter
ahh, this is probably the 5th timI've rewatched this flim. It is just my favrotie comfore movie. I i just love coming back to it. Probayeb, my favourite romcom ever. 9/10
Nightcrawler Dir. Dan Gilroy
This man would listen to business bro podcasts and be too into American pyhco. I liked it. The main thing i love was the music. It scored like of those big success stories, but everything shows Horrfic, so at times, can give you this very off-putting feeling. It is just everything about the story, and the main character was made to put you off in some way, and I love it. 7/10
˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚T.v shows˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚
I watched it all in a day while working on a painting, and it was ok??, idk, think it has that problem that i can't really put my figure on, but it is the same one that couldn't get me into fleagbag, i guess. I found the main couple be insuffable in a way that i didn't want them to end up together and actively hoped they ended off worse than when the show started. I like a lot of the secondary relationships thought. I read a bit about and it said that it was originally a play and i think probaly would have liked it more if i watch it as a play 5(maybe less the more i think about it)/10

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022, dir. Ryan Coogler) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Okay. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. As with all MCU reviews, this will be vague because I know at least some of y'all have not gotten a chance to see it yet. Does it live up to the near-insurmountable legacy the first one left behind? I think not. However, as mentioned, that was going to be almost impossible, and it shouldn't take away from how great Wakanda Forever really is. Firstly, and unsurprisingly, Wakanda Forever serves as a way to mourn the loss of Chadwick Boseman and King T'Challa, and it is in these moments that the film works best. It is unfortunate that this is mainly felt in the opening and closing scenes of the film. That's not to say it is only in those moments, because it's not, Boseman's presence is felt throughout the entire film, and I think that works both for and against it (even though the latter is not in any way the fault of the filmmakers).
Boseman is missed. Letitia Wright, great actor that she is, has the slightest amount of trouble carrying the film on her shoulders. Thankfully, she doesn't have to entirely. Angela Bassett, an absolute legend, gets to own her fair share of screen time reprising her role as Queen Ramonda, and, in a lot of ways, is just as important as Shuri is to the overall story of the film. Also really bringing it is newcomer Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, the Sub-Mariner, who is a character that has been hotly anticipated for quite awhile by comic book fans. Mejía was, without a doubt, my favorite part of the film. Following up a villain like Erik Killmonger/Prince N'Jadaka is no easy feat, and they pulled it off without even breaking a sweat. Mejía commands your attention, and his cause and reasoning for wanting to do what he wants to do is every bit as empathetic as Killmonger's was the first time around. Dominique Thorne is also incredible as Riri Williams (who comic book readers probably know better as the new-age hero Ironheart). Where Multiverse of Madness failed in their portrayal of America Chavez, Wakanda Forever absolutely succeeds in their portrayal of Riri, and I can't wait to see more of her in her upcoming solo series on Disney+.
It isn't without its problems: a lot of the late stage decisions/revelations feel a little unearned, a big bulk of the middle of the film feels unneeded (and at a whopping 2 hours and 41 minutes, there definitely could have been some fat trimmed), and I could have used about a million more percent M'Baku. Winston Duke is an absolute scene-stealer and deserves so much more screen time than he is given. Not only as a comedic character, but surprisingly as a dramatic one as well. In a way, I'm glad the movie did not try to beholden itself too much to the original, it helps it stand a little better on its own two feet. In another way, though, it loses a little of that magic that made the original one such a triumph of modern film making, even if it was only a little. Regardless, Wakanda Forever shines very bright, and I like to think that part of that is Chadwick beaming at how well his MCU family is doing in his absence.
Score: 9/10
Currently still playing in some theaters, but is probably on it's way out. Look for it soon on Disney+.
I'd also like to point out that this film is led almost entirely by women of color. Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Dominique Thorne could all be considered main characters in their own right here, and that is something worth majorly celebrating.

Wasn’t technically tagged but I was bored and this was short, so thank you @enchantedbyhiddles for the open tag.
Rule: Tag 9 people you want to know better
Top 3 Ships: oh jeez. So uh, I’m not actually that big a shipper believe it or not. I tend to ship things very lightly, especially in Marvel where there are so many characters interacting that I can’t seem to feel any are really attached outside of friendships due to insufficient character interactions.
I only have one true OTP, Napollya from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) dir. Guy Ritchie, but that movie I also have an OT3 from this film and can see AUs with an OT4 as well thanks to someone pointing out we all had a Hugh Grant phase so why isn’t he being considered. Napollya is the only ship tag I track here, and it’s really the only fanfiction I read anymore too. I’ve definitely considered writing some again just for this ship or OT3 or OT4.
I have to include Elio & Oliver from Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman and its film counterpart (2017) dir. Luca Guadagnino. However they will also be tied with Danny and Alex from the limited series London Spy (2015) written by Tom Rob Smith and triply tied with George and Jim from A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood and its film counterpart (2009) dir. Tom Ford. I have included all of them in the same slot because they all hold about the same place in my heart and fill my heart with as much love and happiness and PAIN.
And finally I select what was probably my very first ship outside Disney princesses and their princes, and that goes to Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner from the Pirates of the Caribbean series. They were definitely the first ship I really felt a connection existed between the characters and 100% ship to this day.
Honorable mentions go to Adam and Eve from Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) dir. Jim Jarmusch because their chemistry was absolutely beautiful, and of course to all my OC ships with my friends (shoutout to those with whom our AUs have AUs in particular!), most of whom have been tagged.
Lipstick or chapstick: Chapstick. I need it more and don’t use it enough.
Last song: “Iron” by Woodkid (left off on that while listening to his The Golden Age album last night)
Last movie: by choice? Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) dir. Doug Liman. What did I actually watch last? Otherhood (2019) dir. Cindy Chupack
Reading: Nothing at the moment but I want to change that I just...don’t have the energy. I last read a Napollya fic though, can’t remember what it was called but it was a Witcher AU. The last book I read was Dracula by Bram Stoker for a class.
Tagging 9 people: @ayzrules @artless-whimsy @danascullyrps @starkeeper6 @typinggently @jacubesilvora @detrimentalmentality @roctaku331 @sugar-free-byproducts & anyone else who wants to do it.

The Freedom of Expression Ep 1 - Haruna Fuuka files lawsuit against internet slanderers
*with Kaoru (K), Joe (J), Tasai (T) , who is a journalist writing for the newspaper Tokyo Sports, and Kami/god.*
Kaoru: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru. Have you heard of 'The Freedom of Expression' somewhere before?
Joe, Tasai : *noding*
K: I've a feeling we've done this before...
J: Thats right, yes...Its not a feeling, we actually did.
K: We are reviving the show we did on the radio station InterFM from 2015-16, on youtube this time.
J: Awesome
*applause*
J: I was really happy when I was first told about the revival.
K: I was also surprised *laughs*
J: Its not that you were made to revive the show though, right Kaoru?
K: The suggestion just came at me.
J: Oh really, like 'How about it?'
K: Like, 'Wanna tryy?' 1*
J: Ah, in a Kansai accent?
K:Yes yes
J: Like, 'Lets tryyy'..kind of thing...it started like that *laughs*
K: Yep
J: We did quite a lot (on InterFM). We even did a special edition
K, T : Yes, we did
J: We even made stickers
K: Brazil!
J:Yes
T: Ah, the live broadcast..at the Olympics
J: It was Dobashi san...Bishbash Dobashi san.
T: It would be good if we could do another live broadcast at this year's Tokyo Olympics.
J: On this You tube channel?
T: Yes *laughs*
J: A live broadcast might be a bit difficult legally, as for the Olymipcs *T laughs*
K: Um, thats *shhh*
J: Oh, its a secret!' *K laughing*  Maybe if were are asked by Tokyo Sports..?
K: Yes yes...So, as to the freedom of expression...
Kami/god: Wait, wait, wait..I've come down too.
J: Oh, Kami?
K: He's saying it from himself *laughs*..I thought he would come if we beckoned him though.
J: Thats what usually happened. He was the kind of god that would come down after we called him, but now a god that comes down on his own accord.
K: Wasn't he like that before too? Should we keep him in reseve a bit more?
J: He'll want to appear, we can't help it?
Kami: You were forgetting about me!
K: We are not forgetting you!
Kami: You musn't forget your god!
*laughing*
T: We are not forgetting you!
Kami: Its not good!
J: You are always in our hearts.
T: Yes, he is.
Kami: Yes, thats it..you have to think like that.
J: But, you are not in the studio today, kami?
Kami: Oh..um, im just getting off a night shift..
J: A night shift?!
K: Ah, but it was like that before..
Kami: Right.
J: You are doing night shift work again? *Tasai laughs*
Kami: yes, thats right.
K: That was a while ago wasn't it, how many years ago?
J: Oh, is this the night shift season?
Kami: No, its..
T: You worked for ¥1000 per hour right?
Kami: Yes, yes...my hourly rate has risen a bit though. They were telling me 'Take a rest, take a rest', so my income dropped.
J: Ahh, its what they called a 'reformed working style', right?
Kami: Right
J: Its tough for you too, Kami.
Kami: *laughs* Yes it is.
K: He's the same as ever...  so lets get started.
J, T: Please
K: Ah, by the way, Tasai san, as well as Bishbashi Dohashi san, wasn't there another person before (at InterFM)?
T: Yes..a beastly guy *K laughs* An old aquaintance of the listeners', a guy called Monster Hiranabe.
J: Its a strange story, but once when a certain celebrity died, Hiranabe-san called me up, and asked me if I had known the deceased guy...as soon as I said that I hadn't known him very well, he hung up on me straight away!
T: Thats awful!
J: He is awful
T: This very guy, Hiranabe, even got a promotion from the manager.
J: Eh? Promoted to what?!
T: To Director
J:Eh?! Really?
K: Is that okay??
J: No, it'll be terrible!
K: Right, lets move onto the main news...I'd like to get deeper into the concept of 'The Freedom of Expression'.
J: Right, so Haruna Fuuka has filed a lawsuit againts those who engage in 'internet slander'.
A tweet stated 'Both her parents created a failure'.
On Jan 14th, 18 year old Haruna and her mother filed a lawsuit at Yokohama district court demanding ¥2,654,000 in damages from a person engaged in spreading falsehoods which have damaged her dignity.
On the acknowledgement that these tweets went beyond what was deemed acceptable by society at large, on Nov 1st the internet provider was ordered to make public the persons name and address etc.
Haruna has been tweeting since the age of 9, giving her opinion at random about society's problems, and creating a stir. She now has over 200,000 followers and is fighting 10 years of slander. Kaoru, what do you think about this?
K: Well..I mean, naturally, you'd feel like that..
J: Hmm, but I don't know the details but..the name of the defendant has been withheld...well, its a common problem that as a person speaking in the public eye, you are going to get criticism along with praise...like a 'fame tax'.  That said, how far do you go before honour is damaged? On SNS, you are of course free to express yourself, you can write what you want, but the issue is what constitutes damage to honour. This might be a very difficult area in which to draw a legal line, but on the other hand, if you don't draw a legal line, things may escalate out of control...Kaoru, what do you think?
K: Well for example, if banter between friends is written down...controlling that...Its best not to look at whats written in the first place.
J: Ah, the person in question right? By the way Kaoru, its a strange question, but do you search for yourself online?
K: No, not really. I hear things, the office staff will tell me.
J: Oh, if anything is being said?
T: In the world of fame its quite true, that even if 98 or 99 opinions out of 100 are good, the one negative thing will stand out.
K: Well, yes, its the bad things that..
J: On the other hand, from the writers'  perspective at Tokyo Sports, how far are you willing to slander someone? You could write an article in a good or bad way..
T: Of course balance is important, but of course, if the courts want to complain to us, they can call us, and start an exchange, but in the case of slanders on the internet, its like, who do you complain to? So, if you ask celebrities, they will say Tokyo Sports slander is better than anonymous online slander because at least they can complain to our face.
J: Mm, absolutely. Just how far do we protect these tweets, these freedoms of expression? Its difficult.
K: Are these really 'expressions'?
J: Well, esentially, yes. When you say 'tweets' you think of nonsense, but really its media expressing things, or artists expressing things..
K: Yes, yes, you can get a sense of individual expression.
J: And this especially has the power to influence...
K: Yes, and people get swept up in it.
J: I think this is universal, but at the moment I think Japan is bit like a geyser, people will rush towards any incident and some will start complaining, I mean, I think its important to say what you feel, but its complaining without trying to solve anything, only satisfying yourself.
K: Thats it
J: Its sounds strange to say, but it ends like masturbation. If it turns into something towards a soloution its ok, but just creating thoughtless slander to satisfy yourself is questionable.
K: So its often said, if you continue the conversation only looking at the bad things, it can't be helped. There are also good people out there..you know, put more importance on those people. How to put it...its like we said before, if you focus too much on that one out of a hundred, its kind of rude to the other 99.
J: I see. Still this person has over 200,000 followers and its said she has been fighting slander for ten years.
T: She's always been a bit of a talking point online. I'll just search for her.
J: I also have Instagram, I do stuff to do with societal problems on The Dave Fromm show's youtube channel, and whenever I upload about it (on IG), my followers decrease!  *everyone laughs* Outrageously decrease! Im serious, despite getting so far, that channel updates every week, and with every update my followers decrease. Maybe people hate reading about societal problems..*to Tasai* What did you find?
T: So for example there was that thing recently about regulating gamers to 60mins per session, she had quite a few things to say about that, playing vs learning etc.
J: I see..Young people do complain, well you can't really tell here, but on the other hand, young people these days, i know they would hate us old guys talking about this, but young people apparently have three main taboos. The first is talking about sex, they dont follow this, the second is politics, they don't follow this either, and the other one is, they don't like being made to talk about the kind of things that they really need to be talking about...there seems to be this kind of trend. So i think in this way...theres a chance Haruna is getting right to the point of this. But certainly, applying the law in a way that recognises infringement/damage to honour by way of personal utterances has the potential to lead to restrictions on the freedom of expression. Its a difficult play off, isnt it?
T: Yes, it really is
J: Obviously, when it comes to race, or racial discrimination, there has come to be rules concerning hate speech and so on, but how far can you regulate one-to-one slandering, or..how far can you protect the person being attacked? Should the country or the judiciary decide this? Its difficult.
K: Kami, what do you think? Are you there?
Kami: Well, I hear slanders towards me all the time *everyone laughs* Like, god tells lies, god is useless, or even that there is no such thing as god!
J: Ahh, i see. They deny you!
Kami: Yes, thats it. If I care about those things, I lose!
J: Do you search for yourself online?
Kami: I do. *everyone laughs* ..and whenever I do its only ever those things that come up.
J: Ah of course...Kami, you have an exceptionally good handle on social media  dont you?
T: He's great
Kami: Ive got a good handle on it.
J: Do you use an iphone?
Kami: I have two.
J: God has two iphones! Thats brilliant.
Kami: Yep, I have two...im not allowed to use them while im working.
T: Does he have a contract? With his address and such?
J: I can't tell whether he's great, or whether he's not so great...
Kami: If i care, I lose...I prefer them to hate me, rather than to be indifferent to me.
K: Kami, what do you think about playing computer games for one hour?
Kami: If the kid is good at it, they should keep doing it.
T: I see, i see.
J: Ohh not sure about that. That seems a bit out.
Kami: No, i really think so. Skilled kids can carry on playing.
K: Should unskilled ones give up?
Kami: Yes, they shouldn't do it...When they play all day, and they just can't clear the level..that kind of kid.
K: Its a waste of time right?
Kami: Exactly, its a waste.
J: They should do something else?
Kami: Yes
K: You should quit if you have no talent for it?
Kami: Yes, yes, its talent.
J: Well, just getting off a nightshift must be tiring.
K: For us too, you know, we should try not to say 'stop it' too quickly...we have to keep it interesting.
Kami: It was interesting though, I was listening.
T: Oh thank you.
Kami: But don't tell lies about me.
T: If you thought it was interesting, you should write about it on your social media.
Kami: Yeh, everyone pretends on social media anyway, they won't know its me.
K: Well, that was the first episode of 'The Freedom of Expression' but, should I ask how it was..? *laughs*
J: But, being together again after a while was refreshing..
K,T: Yes, thats right
T: Im happy.
J: So am I.
K: Well, so we started in this vein....Tune in next time to see how it goes.  So this time, only this camera, theres nothing here *gestures behind*, but if lots of people watch, we could go different places, increase our cameras. I still don't know about your fee, Joe.
J: Eh?! What do you mean? It says here my fee will stay the same!
K: I might have to lower it *laughs*
J: *coughs* You're only lowering mine?...But everyone please subscribe.
K: Yes please. Please look forward to next time. Thank you very much.
1* They are saying 'How about this?' in a Kansai accent, how to translate that??

Halloween 2019 Run-Down
Tumblr media
Well, Halloween is well and truly over. It’s been a few years since we managed the one-a-day challenge, managing just 17 films this year, with a personal best of 33. The goal was quality over quality - let’s see how that goes...
1. The Invisible Man (1933)
Dir. James Whale
Tumblr media
It is unreal how well this film holds up at 86 years old. Me and my girlfriend both enjoyed this film, and it’s down to James Whales undeniable craft and Claude Rain’s endlessly entertaining performance.
2. Friday the 13th (2009)
Dir. Marcus Nispel
Tumblr media
I fell in to the same trap as I did with the Conan remake by being convinced, by a documentary on the franchise, that this would be worth my time. It’s not terrible but not nearly good enough to rival the charm the original series has just by virtue of being 80s crap rather than 2000s crap.
3. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Dir. George A. Romero
Tumblr media
I hadn’t realised how long it had been since I watched this. Maybe it was zombie-fatigue, or maybe that I usually throw on Night of the Living Dead this time of year. DotD is just a brilliantly crafted film, and I feel like I fully appreciated the commentary on consumerism this time around, rather than just knowing that was what the film was “about”.
4. Scream 2 (1997)
Dir. Wes Craven
Tumblr media
This was not nearly as good as I remember. My entire memory of this was the discussion of sequel tropes, and I think that brief moment of doing the thing Scream did was about all I enjoyed from it. While the original is as solid as ever in my opinon, even Buffy wasn’t enough to save this for me.
5. The Child (1977)
Robert Voskanian
Tumblr media
A random purchase, this film was a gem of a find. Its low-budget 70s aesthetic really added to the atmosphere of this oddball movie and made some sequences especially creepy, tappinh into a truly nightmarish vibe so seldom found in cinema. Fans of Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things should make efforts to track this one down.
6. Candyman (1992)
Dir. Bernard Rose
Tumblr media
Quickly realising this wasn’t standard slasher fare, the opening had me very excited for this film. However, it went on to do relatively little for me. I won’t deny it had some unsettling moments, I just felt it wasn’t holding together as satisfyingly as I wanted it to. Whilst I feel I should give this another chance, I doubt I will soon.
7. It (1990)
Dir. Tommy Lee Wallace
Tumblr media
I’d never seen an It film. I found myself loving the original for its character work - rare in a horror film - and disturbing concept. For some reason the thought of being haunted by something your whole life really creeps me out. Despite its age and budget, the dual storyline and efforts taken to portray the personal impact of the horror in this film go a long way to make this very effective. Very chilling, very good.
8. The People Under the Stairs (1991)
Dir. Wes Craven
Tumblr media
There are good things about this film but it suffers from very weak cinematography (like many 90s horror films) and the fact that satire in horror has been much more interesting and sophistacted in years previous to and since the making of this film.
9. Phantasm (1979)
Dir. Don Coscarelli
Tumblr media
I was well aware I needed to revisit this often over-looked franchise which I have always championed. Way back when, I began with the sequel, which bowled me over, and then watched the original. My memories was that the 1979 film was a purer horror film with a very singular tone. Watching it again, it wasn’t the perfect nightmare I’d remembered but is still a must-see for its original aesthetic, unique storyline and chilling moments.
10. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Dir. Kenny Ortega
Tumblr media
Despite being a recent addition to the roster, it wouldn’t be Halloween without Sarah Jessica Parker’s cleav- I mean... without Hocus Pocus.
11. Halloween (2018)
Dir. David Gordon Green
Tumblr media
Originally wowed by this lovingly crafted follow up to the original Halloween I was concerned that a second viewing might bring me down without the benefit of my initial low expectations. Not so! The characters make this film, and the care taken to blend the old and the new is palpable. I still love this film and believe it’s about as a good as a Halloween sequel could be.
12. Phantasm II (1988)
Dir. Don Coscarelli

While Phantasm (1979), if not disappointing, wasn’t all I’d hoped for revisiting it Phantasm II was just as glorious as I remember. Gory, dreamy and mad as a box of frogs, I can’t recommend this enough and I maintain it works well having not seen the original (like my first time) as it only accentuates its nightmare-like rythm, wooziness and insanity.
13. The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942)
Dir. Erle C. Kenton
Tumblr media
I knew this wasn’t going to live up the previous three but you can’t be a bit of Frankenstein for October, and Universal Monsters always hit the spot. What this film lacked in directorial tightness - Boris Karloff - it made up for with bombastic set pieces, wacky plot points and the return of a brilliant peformances by Lugosi as Igor.
14. Suspiria (1977)
Dir. Dario Argento
Tumblr media
My thoughts on this film have changed a lot over the years. Initially, upon recommendations from people such as Mark Kermode, I adored it on first viewing, yet recent watches have left me thinking it no longer really did it for me. Viewing it on the big screen (for the second time), stepping in on a chance passing by the Prince Charles Cinema, I’ve come full circle to thinking it is (aside from visually beautiful) pretty perfect as a disturbing, hysterical, dream-like (original opinon, I know) fairytale for adults.
16. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
Dir. Jim Strenson
Tumblr media
Whilst inevitably not as good as I remembered from my childhood, revisiting this was a perfectly seasonal treat and in spite of some ridiculousness its combination of hijinks and genuinely creepy moments definitely peg this as one of, if not the best of the Scooby Doo feature films.
17. Halloween (1978)
Dir. John Carpenter
Tumblr media
I don’t fully understand why, but Halloween is a film I’ve changed my mind on massively over the years. Maybe it’s because I saw it, for the first time, long after all the other John Carpenter films I’d watched and loved, or maybe because so many films borrowed its formula that the impact of the original was diluted but those first few viewings left me lukewarm on the film. Yet over the years I have appreciated this film more and more, now to the point where - after this year’s Blu-Ray viewing - I think it’s pretty fucking perfect, remarkably atmospheric and actually very scary.

“Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places...”
Tumblr media
I was thinking of certain scary movies I revisit around this time of year and why, and ended up writing some stuff below.
The Dead Zone (1983, Dir. David Cronenberg)
This one isn't strictly horror but captures the bleak, wintry New England vibe of early Stephen King perfectly, and has what is to my mind Christopher Walken's most moving performance. One of the few times Cronenberg has cared less about disturbing you or ramming a philosophical point home than in using a solid narrative to explore the emotional experience of a man caught up in an extraordinary situation. One of those films that deepens in your mind the more you live with it.
The Haunting (1963, Dir. Robert Wise)
Shot widescreen in gorgeous black and white, this one is one of the crown jewels of haunted house pictures. From the first moments it has a rich sense of foreboding, like a whisper that sends chills down your spine. Great performances, especially from Julie Harris as a young woman who was never quite right slowly going insane.
The Spiral Staircase (1946, Dir. Robert Siodmak)
A small gem from the 40's, in which a young mute woman is terrorized by a shadowy killer in a big house during a thunderstorm (do these films exist in any other conditions?). Small town scares with a bit of a noir feel, and a very creepy score. One that you see and instantly calls to the part of your mind that remembers that one time you ran home a little faster as the sun went down, a breeze kicked up, and you were just sure there was something moving back there in the shadows.
Frankenstein (1931, Dir. James Whale)
An obvious choice, but no less incredible because of it. I deeply love the first batch of Universal monster films because of how simple and pure and cinematic they are. Limited production values but MASSIVE amounts of atmosphere and feeling. Some people might feel they are dated but I think love them even more because of that. I love history, and the dark corners of these pictures carry a sense of not just film history, but of the old world itself, and the rhythms it had before it was overrun with technology. Terrific performances by Boris Karloff and Colin Clive, plus a very evocative and theatrical "introduction" before the film begins.
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, Dir. James Whale)
Same as above, though this is a much more polished, eccentric and entertaining film. James Whale had free reign to do what he wanted, and he cut loose, aided by a gorgeous Franz Waxman score and indelible work by Karloff and Clive (again), Elsa Lanchester and Ernest Thesiger (whose prissy Dr. Pretorious is one for the ages).
The Mummy (1932, Dir. Karl Fruend)
A different type of monster, but just as eerie and surreal. Another of my longtime fascinations is the culture of ancient Egypt (don't get me started on "Land of the Pharaohs" or "The Ten Commandments"), which this quick film indulges along with a dash of the inherent creepiness that was completely missing (IMHO) in any of that stuff Brendan Fraser did. Again, the stilted nature of some dialogue and performance is all part of the allure, making it all feels so alien as to fit the mood of the story perfectly.
The Innocents (1961, Dir. Jack Clayton)
Another black and white widescreen beauty, this one a more subtle, ethereal ghost story centered on a pair of children that a well meaning but naive nanny (Deborah Kerr) has been hired to look after. Buried secrets are uncovered and dark forces unleashed, but in a much more subtle and emotional way (for a modern equivalent, look at something like "The Others").  The use of shadow and space here will make your knees buckle in spots, and the general aura of uneasiness will raise the hairs on your neck.
The Changeling (1980, Dir. Peter Medak)
George C. Scott loses his wife and daughter in an accident, then moves into a large, foreboding mansion in Seattle to focus on his musical compositions and recovering emotionally. Obviously, things don't go as well as planned. The trappings of the haunted house genre are given a real emotional grounding, and the backstory feels organic and engrossing rather than just an excuse to throw in loud noises. Wonderfully acted, designed and photographed, a quiet nail biter.
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983, Dir. Jack Clayton)
Though a bit Disneyfied, this one is still a perennial because of how it captures that mixture of wonder and fear that Ray Bradbury's work had, pitting ordinary people up against sinister forces closing in on the spaces we consider the safest (in this case, a Midwestern town where the only thing that changes are the seasons) and crystallizing the moment when a parent realizes how little power they have to protect their kids. Driven by two wonderful performances, from Jason Robards (weary and homespun) and Jonathan Pryce (deliciously malevolent), this film has a genuine feel for small town life, the way that autumn can seem both hopeful and menacing, and the perils of both wanting to grow up too fast and wanting to be young again.
Salem's Lot (1979, Dir. Tobe Hooper)
The first thing that I remember absolutely scaring the shit out of me as a kid was a moment in this TV production involving nails scratching a child's window in the middle of the night. I won't say more about THAT, but I will say that despite this being made for late 70's television, with all of the restrictions inherent to that time, it's still pretty damn creepy, which is both a testament to Stephen King's original book and to the level of skill and atmosphere Tobe Hooper was able to give it. The depth of creepiness and history isn't as rich as in the book, but there is an approximation of the story's eccentric sprawl that draws you in, plus the eccentric, nostalgic vibe you get from late 70's TV.
Go To The Head of the Class (from "Amazing Stories") (1986, Dir. Robert Zemeckis)
A spooky, spirited lark made just after "Back to the Future" became huge. Nothing ground breaking, just a fast, funny goof made with Zemeckis' characteristic visual spark for Spielberg's mid 80's TV show and featuring a wonderfully cracked performance by Christopher Lloyd pitched somewhere between Doc Brown and Judge Doom (roles he played on either side of this one).
Curse of the Demon (1957, Dir. Jacques Tourneur)
The fact that my own family was menaced by Satanists (angry at my father for hauling one of their leaders into jail) when I was 9 probably has a lot to do with why I respond to this film, in addition to the general air of menace and atmosphere that Tourneur was great at (see "Cat People" and "Out of the Past"). Concerning the curse put on a man who debunks cults by the nefarious leader of one, this is a quick, creepy psychological ride with a classy script that doesn't scrimp on jolts.
Horror of Dracula (1958, Dir. Terrence Fisher)
Innumerable vampire films litter the history of scary movies, and there are certainly some that may have more ingenuity and pizazz than this one. But something about this early Hammer film, with its chilly, heightened gothic atmosphere and a sense of reality being peeled away in front of your eyes, sticks with you. It may be Terrence Fisher's brisk, efficient skill for building horror, or it may be the iconic performances of Peter Cushing and the great Christopher Lee. Or it may just be that particular, peculiar English sense of impending doom these films have. I first saw this one on during an AMC marathon (before they ever had commercials) hosted by the director of the next film on this list, and it's easy to understand how it spoke to his own feeling for the inevitability of a malevolent force slowly closing in on you.
The Thing (1982, Dir. John Carpenter)
Cold, stark and unsparingly tense, I saw this at a drive in when I was 7, and it sunk its teeth into me before I ever knew who John Carpenter was. The sense of isolation and foreboding built into the Antarctic location extends to the feeling of the direction, acting, photography and even the musical score (a mix of Ennio Morricone and Carpenter himself). At its core is the idea that you can't trust anything, whether it's the physical elements around you, the man sitting beside you or even your own sense of self. The opening sequence, of a dog being chased by a helicopter in the snow, is just gorgeous and evocative, and Dean Cundey's photography throughout is lithe and lurking. I think this film is so powerful for me because it came at a very formative time, the period between 8 and 11 where I was developing an understanding of the larger forces in the world that were not benevolent, that did not have any compassion, and did in fact want to kill you.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982, Dir. Tommy Lee Wallace)
This one got a unduly bad rap out of the gate, as it went in a wildly different direction in terms of its story and had nothing to do with Michael Myers. Aside from that, though, this is very much in the early 80's Carpenter spirit, directed by schoolmate/editor Tommy Lee Wallace, shot by Dean Cundey and driven by an unsettling, dread soaked score by Carpenter himself. True, there is a definite B-movie spirit to it, with obligatory kill scenes that feel too calculated and acting (aside from lead Tom Atkins and the wonderful bad guy Dan O'Herlihy) that can be a little shaky, but overall it's a creepy, entertaining story about modern day witchcraft (with a TV jingle that will get in your head and stay there forever). Again, part of its appeal may go back to where I grew up, in a small, rural place where something always felt a little off, where bad things might be happening at any moment right under your nose, and the dark carried a powerful emotional force.
