#to one film that shares a similar technique just bothers me

I've been doing NaNoWriMo for over a decade (long before I ever got my ADHD diagnosis!) and I've picked a few tricks up along the way that I wanted to share! ♥ These might not work for everybody, but they work for me, so I hope they can help some other people too ♡⸜(˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝ Word Sprints/Wars Word wars and sprints are kinda the same these days, but I'm specifically talking about warring/sprinting with other people! Competition is a good motivator for me so I really only write in wars 99% of the time.
There are Discord bots (sprint-bot etc) to make sprints easier w/ other people. I like to do them for 10 mins, so I can take a break to reset my focus and then go back, but you might like longer!
If you have Scrivener, I like to use the Session Targets goal to set a realistic goal for myself in a sprint, and use that as motivation to write quicker. Fifty Headed Hydra
500 words. 5 minutes. That's all it is. You can do them alone or with other people (competition makes my brain go brrrrr) and if you don't hit the 500, who cares? Words are words!
Five minutes of focus is super easy, and if writing feels like pulling teeth, it's only five minutes - you can go back to whatever is pulling your attention afterwards. Much more palatable than an hour long writing marathon!
Word Crawls
Word crawls are like lots of little writing challenges all packaged up in story format. Longer ones can be helpful and provide enough variation to help you reach higher word counts without feeling like you've been doing it for ages, but shorter ones can help me get tons of words in a shorter timeframe.
There's also self-care crawls if you wind up with bad posture etc, and tons of crawls themed around shows/games/films/etc. The variation in WHY you're writing might be enough to keep your attention! :D
Do writing in tiny chunks
I've never been able to sit down and write for a solid hour. Ever. Too much focus needed, too many distractions available. Pomodoro is a technique for doing X for Y minutes, and then getting a break. Personally I find Pomodoro doesn't work for me, but if I do 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, another 5... it adds up and I can hit my wordcount goals! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
There are marathons for 3/5/10 hours that people do, but I always find myself struggling after 10 or so minutes. So, if you want to do a marathon, break it up into chunks if you need to. Allocating a chunk of time and cutting it into 5/10/20 minute blocks can be useful!
ColdTurkey/Distraction blockers
If you could focus for a longer space of time, but get endlessly distracted by social media, Discord, Steam... use software like ColdTurkey to block your access to the distractions!
Many of them can be set up to block access at specific times of day, too, so if habits are something you can build, you can block out an hour each day at the same time to build a habit! ♥
Body-doubling
Body-doubling is the practice of having someone 'in the trenches' with you, or just... there. You can do them virtually in a Discord call or similar if you don't want to or can't go out in person. This is something I find useful for all aspects of my life, not just writing - having someone working on similar goals as me, at the same time, SUPER USEFUL!
Last but not least...
Leave the inner editor at the door
Don't bother with backspacing. For NaNoWriMo, if you just want the 50k, ignore anything 'wrong'. Add in highlights or big bolded notes to tell yourself it needs redoing after November.
If you find that you absolutely cannot silence the inner editor, there's ways around that! Ilys is a (paid) website that only lets you see the last letter you types. Scrivener (on Mac) apparently has a similar setting to see only the last line etc. You could always set your font size really big, too.
Obviously if you're looking to have a polished manuscript at the end of the month, this might not work for you - but first drafts are meant to just exist, not be perfect, so do whatever works!
I think that's everything for now!! Some of these definitely won't work for everybody but they work for me :> I hope they're useful!

zarlie was not queerbait (yes, them having an unaired kiss also doesn’t mean it’s queerbait even if it did air) nor will esperastra be if they don’t become canonically romantic because they showrunners never said otherwise. fans tend queerbaiting themselves because they interpret things differently than how the writers actually intended.
Hey anon! Thanks for writing in.
I figured my analysis wouldn’t be without criticism, as anything you post on this site is bound to be disagreeable to some. However, I will politely disagree with you here.
Firstly, I do strongly dislike the implication that people “queerbait themselves” since the use of queerbaiting has been a harmful marketing technique for quite awhile now. Sure, people like to joke around and say they are doing it to themselves. Heck, my friends do! However, I don’t typically say something is queerbaiting unless I strongly feel that it is, because I do believe there is an overuse of the word at times. In this instance, I do believe that the writers knew exactly what they were doing.
The exact definition of the word from Wiki is “a marketing technique for fiction and entertainment in which the creators hint at, but then do not actually depict, same-sex romance or other LGBT representation.” So how does Zarlie fall under this then?
Well, it all comes down to acting and dialogue choices, now doesn’t it? Zarlie itself, according to the fandom wiki which could be wrong, says that it’s the 9th most written pair from Legends of Tomorrow. Okay, interesting, considering how much content there is to write for. Especially since in all technicality, Zarlie was really only a ship for 1 season when you really think about it, since the OG Zari disappears after the season 4 finale. But sorry, that’s off track. Back to the main point.
The fact is, they added in dialogue that purposely suggested to the viewers certain things. Having Zari admit to finding Amaya hot, not correct Charlie when asked if she was straight or not, those things are intentional. Then of course there is the acting choices, which could have been corrected had the showrunners and producers felt they were too romantically coded, yet they didn’t. Charlie was constantly looking Zari up and down, biting their lip around her, and purposeful touching and close proximity to her at nearly all times. And the fact is, the fans were asking for more because of how much they loved the pairing. Then the mid-season finale happened, and when the show came back, they still teased fans with Zarlie even AFTER Steelhacker became canon. If it was just teasing and flirting between the two, that’s one thing. But the fact is clearly Charlie was never over Zari, which is why they shared the deleted kiss. Maisie has been on record saying multiple times that she was pushing for Zarlie, as was Tala. And of course the kiss. Now saying that if it did happen it wouldn’t have been bait is not entirely true, nor is it false. But in this case? Yes, it is baiting. Why bother filming it at all if you’re only going to say “oh it doesn’t fit the scene?” and cut it out? I bet my bottom dollar Maisie and Tala fought for that scene, and they chose to cut it out. Plus, since they made a point of saying that Zari 1.0 and Behrad lived out a similar life, if not the same life, aboard the Waverider, than the implication that Charlie was into Zari that way is there right in front of our eyes. Lastly, fans were really excited to see a couple that were two people of colour, since that hadn’t been done often, therefore it was also drawing the attention of queer people of colour.
So long story short, Zarlie was queerbaited because even after one member of the pair was put into a romantic relationship with someone else, they never stopped using the chemistry between the two actors to draw people’s attention to the characters. Zarlie was queerbaited because the writers and directors could have asked the actors to not do specific choices but did not. Zarlie was queerbaited, plain and simple.
And only because you mentioned them, I didn’t explicitly say Esperastra was queerbaiting as of now, however some of the choices they’re doing does parallel Zarlie and other romantic tropes. It’s how they continue to write them from here on out that determines that for me. Right now, I’d say they’re friends to lightly queercoded, but that could change.

So when he rolled up to the nurse’s station at 6PM just before she gave report to night shift, a stolen pudding cup in hand and cheeks rosy from the cold chill of Gibby’s hospital room. Harry grins at her, “Let me drive you to my place, yeah? I’m making dinner tonight.”
Her brows raise, a smile teases her mouth as she finishes writing down a cheat sheet for each room that she can give to the nurse coming in (she’s a bit new, and doesn’t know the flow of the floor very well yet, so Y/N tries to help when she can) “Yeah? Didn’t know you could cook.”
A gasp leaves him, “Oi, of course I can cook! I could make a Sunday roast that would put any Nan on the block to shame.”

vii.
“Holy fuck.”
Y/N had been equal parts nervous and excited when Harry invited her to his flat, a mere four days after they returned from Sweden. In all their time together, and in what they had gone through in the past few months, Y/N had not even so much as been extended the offer to go to his flat, let alone actually be privy to it. To no fault of his own -- Y/N reckons that the last thing on his mind was a tour of his home when someone was threatening to rob their company blind and murder his boss -- but that never meant she wasn’t curious.
She was excited because she thrived off visiting people’s places for the first time and learning what their decorating techniques consisted of. Ever since they’d started chatting past the nurse/family relationship, Y/N had been intrigued to know what his place looked like, and would even theorize about it sometimes if she had a moment to spare. Harry had very offhandedly mentioned that he had a Tanuki statue stationed to the right of his door as soon as you walked in, and Y/N (who also had a Tanuki statue) had her interest piqued immediately. Did she and Harry have similar decorating styles or just equivalent odd taste in staple items? Was that his only piece of decoration?
Some boys she considered complete psychopaths and had barren walls besides maybe a flag or a singular sports poster -- that’s why she’s nervous. Hell, she’d love him all the same if he was repping a Manchester football poster but visiting his flat would be a bit of a struggle.
“Better watch your mouth, Miss. Gregory has a keen sense of hearing and would beg to differ.” She clicks her pen shut, looking up to where he was leaning against the counter, “I’ll let you drive me, yeah, but can we stop by my place so I can grab Ubbe and a change of clothes? Reckon you don’t want the scent of hospital clouding your flat.”
‘Yes we can stop to grab Ubbe, no you may not grab any clothes. Want you in mine.”
Y/N pulls her bottom lip into her mouth, fixing a response for him in her head but Johnathan just about trips over himself with a convenience store cappuccino and a reusable grocery bag with his lunch, “I’m so sorry m’late, my bloody dog decided he was going to wee on my scrubs.”
“Well, I hope you changed out of them.” Harry notes and Y/N snorts, rolling her eyes before she rolls her chair over to him and starts her shift report.
Things had been calm since they returned from Sweden. Or as calm as they can be post-kidnapping, attempted murder, gang fiasco they had encountered there. When Y/N saw Gibson after it had happened, he pulled her into his body closely and squeezed her tight enough that she had a bit of trouble breathing. Y/N couldn’t lie, she was immensely happy to see him, and despite what she had learned about his relationship between him and his son, she let herself enjoy the cuddle.  Even the kiss that he pushed to her temple, before holding tight on her shoulders, “I am not a man who fears many things,” he had started slowly, “Nor am I a man who cares about many things, but you -- I care about you,” he cradles her cheeks in his palms, patting it gently, “I’m glad you’re safe.”
Gibson -- just as Harry -- had a knack for making her feel like a very important addition to their lives. He was relieved to know that she would be his main nurse for the day, and Y/N it’s so he could keep an eye on her. She couldn’t fault him for it though because she beckons Harry around so that she can keep an eye on him. Niall doesn’t think anything is out of the ordinary regarding it, since they usually traveled in something short of a pack. The only reference to the night before that he made (other than asking about her hand, which she had promptly explained that she drunkenly broke a vase and tried to clean it up with her hands) was squeezing her shoulders and uttering, “Champagne turns you into a lightweight, ey? Harry treat you right?” Harry smiled a bit to himself and Y/N cleared her throat, tucking the hair behind her ear.
“Tucked me in, got me water, nursed my hangover, the whole nine.”
Niall patted Harry on the shoulder, “Nice then, mate. Hear one thing about you hurtin’ her and I’ll have to do ya in.”
Harry pouted, “What’s with all the threats my way?”
The night before had felt surreal; a bad, hyper-realistic dream that stuck with her like syrup to a plate. There wasn’t much on the agenda for them since the wedding had passed so they all kind of lingered in Niall and Gibson’s room. They ordered room service, rented a horror film (Gibson was something short of a horror buff, it turned out), and relaxed for the first time in a very long time. It felt like everyone had collectively let out a sigh (apart from Niall, who remained blissfully unaware and fast asleep most of the day).
Harry allowed the others to love upon her for a majority of the time they spent in Gibson’s room. She alternated from being close to where Gibson sat, to leaning against Mickey, and hell she even hung out with Niall a bit when he bothered to wake up. The only bits alone they had together were when she would take Ubbe out for a wee, which normally Mickey might want to accompany her during, but Harry was insistent that he be the one. Had practically pushed her over attempting to get up before Mickey could even think to say that he wanted to go, which he later apologized for.
“I just. . .it won’t be like this for long, but I just -- I wanna be near you, y’know?”
She did know -- because she didn’t want him out of her sight. The few moments that she had to spend, leaving him behind with someone who would ( did) harm him given the chance -- she couldn’t stand it. Could have crawled out of her skin even -- and she knows he must have felt the same, if not worse. Y/N was even more thankful now than ever that they were sharing a hotel room.
Because by the end of the night, when Y/N gave Gibson his nighttime meds, tucked Niall in, and pecked a kiss to Mickey’s scruffy cheek -- they got to flee together. Popped open the door to their room, Ubbe ran in first and beat them to the bed, and Harry suggested a cheeky shower together which -- well, Y/N said if he didn’t mind her in a shower cap (she couldn’t be arsed to wash her hair) then they could go right ahead and do it.
So they did, and Y/N doesn’t think she’s ever been this close with someone before. She helps him tie a plastic baggy over his thigh so that the bandage didn’t get wet before she changed it, and in turn, he helped her tie her own around her hand, “It’s good that I’m here, hm? How else would you clean this arm if you didn’t have me?”
“Niall is dexterous enough.” She teased him.
“I can assure you that I’m far more adept with my fingers than Niall.”
Nothing but bare, smooth skin that their hungry eyes drink each other in. Harry had a lot of tattoos and she can’t help but outline them with her gaze, though she does attempt not to let them wander too far downward -- she would feel bad to stare at his bits, even if he was getting a good look at hers. She did take a whack at his peachy bottom when he leaned over to turn the shower on, and he squeaked, putting his hand over it palm outward, “Aish, that hurt!” Y/N went for him again, a little harder on the other cheek until he straightened out and pivoted, looking at her with furrowed brows, “I’ll spank your bum, see how you like it.”
(Y/N reckons she would like it.)
The shower had been good; it was hot, steamy, and they hadn’t even done anything sexual. They just enjoyed one another, soaked in the hot pelts of water against their skin as they both took turns with who was in the direct line of the water. Harry cleaned her, sudsed her up with strawberry-scented soap, and made her all bubbly before nudging her back into the water. He sang obnoxiously loud, ticked her when he could, and he did get her back with a few swats on her wet bum, leaving a resounding smack that bounced off the walls in an echo. She had fun, and when he bent down to slide their lips together for an innocent little peck, she was over the moon.
It was just good to be with him, and she was happy that her feelings were finally able to be expressed. And he had almost immediately quelled her worries when she thought that maybe this was just a Sweden thing -- maybe they would go home, Harry would not feel the need to be around her constantly since the initial threat had been dealt with and he could go on about his normal life. When she really thought about it, she was sort of just a wrench in his normal plans -- an unnecessary addition and disruption, having accidentally gotten involved in their whole scenario.
But almost as soon as they landed, an hour or two after they had all parted ways to unpack and destress, Harry rang her phone and when she answered she got a, “I don’t think m’quite ready to not be around you 24/7 -- can I come over?”
With a grin that threatened to split her cheeks, she told him to hurry up.
While things were calm now, Y/N still strayed from going out too late at night or lollygagging when she went on her walks with Ubbe. She’s cautious still, of course, but it doesn’t feel like she has to keep looking over her shoulder. They were still taking care of some things, tying off the problem with a nice, neat little bow, and figuring out the semantics of what Elias had left behind with the people he’d hired. From what she understood they were paying them off with a suitable amount to make sure whatever they had discovered or heard wouldn’t be discussed, along with the looming threat that they had actually kidnapped her, and they shouldn’t be a problem any longer. Especially given the fact that they had no emotional ties to the whole situation.
There were still a few questions she might have and confusion on some parts of what happened, but Harry opens up and explains it to her if she asks him anything.
And now she was outside his flat, after climbing seven flights of steps with an ecstatic Ubbe who was beside himself with the new smells. It was a nice area -- a rich one, at that -- the kind of place that she would press her nose up against the window glass as they pass, before looking it up later and realizing that it’s a month’s salary for rent alone. The outer exterior was all sleek and white, about a thousand windows that decorated the building and peered into the lives of the residents. There were balconies as well, each flat had one and from where she could see when they were driving around it toward the parking garage, they were evenly spaced far apart from each other. Which she reasoned that they would be decently large on the inside.
They could have taken the elevator but Y/N felt too guilty to drag Ubbe in when there was an older woman and her friends stepping in, so they took the stairs.  When Y/N had suggested it she hadn’t known he was on the seventh fucking floor, but she trudged up and huffed every time he giggled and teased her, even though he huffed and puffed himself.
He was quick with his keys, the slide of the teeth into the lock was smooth and clicked in a fluid motion that she envied (she had to jiggle and jangle her own), but he paused before he twisted the knob, and turned toward her, “Listen -- this is. . .new for me. I don’t invite people over ever . . .not even like hookups or anything, so other than the movers and the occasional Mitch  -- nobody else has been here. This is my own little safe space, y’know, I try not to sully it with all the shite I’m in but you -- I just can’t get the thought of you in here out of my head. Needed to see it for myself.”
Her heart was full upon entry, which she hadn’t known if that was his intent or if he just needed her to know beforehand that he wasn’t used to having other people in his flat and he might be a little squirrely. Either or, she leaned forward and nudged her forehead against his shoulder (her hands were full with a wriggling Ubbe so at the time it had been her only option to show affection). She was still a little nervous about initiating the kisses -- Harry was typically the one to initiate it and Y/N melts into them.
Harry opened his door and Y/N was almost immediately greeted with the beloved Racoon dog statue. He told her to go ahead and let Ubbe run amuck (he was her good boy though, he wouldn’t climb any couches or beds without explicitly being told he was allowed to) as she was looking around the small foyer-like entrance. Right away she could tell that Harry had somewhat of an eye for interior design -- everything was cohesive in color and sense of style, he easily put her flat to shame. The sofa was facing away from the door and loveseat was caddy corner to it, both large, and a light grey that looked incredibly pricey but lived on -- there were blankets rumpled atop of it like he might have napped there, the pillows only kind of positioned correctly on the couch. They sat on a rug that is a lighter grey in tone, atop of smooth pine flooring. Behind the sofa, there was a dark console table that stretched along the length of it with a modern square lamp on either end. To the left at the end of the couch, he had an electric fireplace installed into a wall of what appeared to be marble, and above it his tv was fixed to the wall, far bigger than what she was used to. His coffee table looked like it was made of black glass, magazines and books were halfheartedly thrown in the middle.
But what really takes her, that she’s trying to drink in entirely, is the wall of windows that is opposite of where she stood. It was clearly the way to the balcony that looked far larger than it did from the car, the panes of glass were so clear that she would probably slam right into them. They only stopped when it reached the kitchen, because of its open concept she could see it from where she stood and it was all sleek, marble counters and black appliances that all looked incredibly new. There was an island counter with bar stools that she reckons he eats at. On the opposite end of the flat, there was a hallway that she believes led to what she presumes was the rooms and bathrooms.
“Holy fuck.” That’s where she was now, her brows raised as she turned to face him, “We’ve been at my crowded, old, rickety flat when you’ve had this just laying around?”
His brows furrow deeply, “Oi, I love your flat. It’s cozy and comfortable, don’t you dare talk about her like that.”
Y/N is too enamored with what she’s seeing to pay much mind to his words. She’s looking around with her face permanently stuck with her lips in an ‘o’ as she looks up and around, taking in the artwork that he had chosen, how it smelled like him, the way it appeared well lived in yet still pristine and polished, “If I lived here, I reckon I wouldn’t leave,” she continues, reaching out, letting her fingertips stroke against the couch wondering how the material could just feel expensive, “I’d be one of those nurses that answers panicked calls from parents at like 3AM ‘cos their kid sneezed.”
A snort leaves him, but he shakes his head all the same, “S’not that great. Gets a bit lonely.” Her face is pressed against the cool glass of the windows, looking out on the dazzling lights that twinkle from the city below them, but his words and the sad inflection in his voice drags her from it. She turns to face him, where he’s setting his things down on his coffee table before sliding up beside her, “It looks much better with you stalking around it though.”
She laughs, leaning her head against his shoulder, “I’ll come stalk about whenever you want then.”
Harry maneuvers them, kisses his teeth to garner her attention before stealing her lips in a kiss when she turns to face him. Her nose scrunches up and she giggles -- he’d let his facial hair grow out some, and it tickled her face when he pressed their mouths together. She sinks into it though as she always does, and Harry can only kiss her for a few moments before he begins to smile against her, and withdraws, “Christ,” he pecks another kiss against her mouth, “Alright, I’ll show you how to operate my shower, and I’ll have some clothes out for you to change into. Will you teach me how I should wash your scrubs?”
His bathroom is just as modern and seemingly hi-tech as the rest of his flat. He surpasses the one in the hall in favor of taking her to his own through the master bedroom, which has a Hilma af Klint painting (he and Mitch have similar tastes), a bed the size of a room that she’d grown up in (it felt like at the very least) that was made, with a black comforter and about thirty thousand pillows. The headboard was large, rectangular, and a dark stained wood that his other furniture matched. Across from his bed, there is another TV affixed to the wall, with a screen saver of a night sky during a thunderstorm. It smells like lavender and Harry -- she’s comforted by it.
There’s a sleek, black tub, an entirely separate shower that came straight from the ceiling, his sink counter is large -- like, several people could keep their morning and nightly skincare routines on there. He shows her how to use the shower (there was a fucking touch screen on the wall that she used to decide the settings), makes a cheeky joke about watching her undress before he left her be to shower.
It was unlike any showering experience she’d ever had before. He showed her the rainfall setting, gave her a spare loofah to scrub with and he let her use the rose-scented body soap he had a huge container full of. She scrubbed her skin raw, washed away every bit of the day. Harry had told her there was a surprise about the towel when she was finished, which she was soon to find that he had a heated rack. The towel is warm, big, and soft as she wraps it around her body, and she finds that he had left her some clothes to change into. It was a grey soft, worn Harley Davidson shirt and sweatpants. Y/N wriggled them on and left the bathroom. Harry told her he would be in the living room, so she ventured out from his bathroom, but she pauses when her eyes flicker across his dresser.
Set on his drawer chest, there was a photo frame that made her heart swell.
Y/N very vaguely remembers taking it -- the night of the bonfire, when she was scared to be alone and that man who’d been following her turned up at the park when she was there. Harry had come to get her, made her feel safe and soft. It was the first night she had met everyone, hung out with them, drank with them until she got sleepy, and managed to slump into Harry’s body. She remembers being lulled to sleep by the steady drum of his heart, how nice it sounded, how warm she felt, and she remembered how he accommodated her body with his arm around her while he let her rest. All of that she remembers quite vividly, however, the picture that was taken is what she has to dig through her thoughts to be reminded of. It was right after Harry had woken her up, called her snoozy, and patted her bum before letting her lean against him so they could walk to the car. Just before they had started their venture to the car, she remembers Mickey stopping them, having been trigger happy with a camera the entire night.
“Big smiles! This one’s for the books.”
Y/N’s eyes shut and she smiled sleepily, her fingers thrown in a peace sign and Harry grinned wide, a dimple dotting his cheek. The ember glow of the fire outlines them in an orange-ish tint as the flash illuminates them in the night, and Y/N wonders what possessed either of them to wear ripped jeans when she was almost certain that night it was below freezing.
“Tha’s my favorite photo,” Harry’s voice rings from behind her and she nearly startled out of her skin, turning her head to look at him, the frame in hand, “Mickey gave it to me like a month or two after he had developed it, I thought we were right cute.”
“We are,” she thumbs the wooden frame, the ridges dabbing into her skin, “This is the night you first stayed at my flat.”
“After you practically tore me a new one for suggesting otherwise,” his chin hooks on her shoulder, nose dipping into the curve of her throat, “You look nice in my clothes.”
“Reckon?” She leans back, melting into his touch, “They’re very soft, kinda feels like cuddling with you. Guess if I have your shirts I don’t have to bother with the body and your freezing toes.”
“Oi,” he grumbles, sliding his arms around her waist, “Be nice, Pet, or I’ll take ‘em right back. Besides, clothes can’t pet on you, or feed Ubbe, or even turn on the godforsaken vampire film or cook dinner.”
A gasp leaves her as she spun in his arms, “You put on Twilight?”
“Of course I did, you wouldn’t shut up about it before, which had me wondering if I remembered it correctly. Figure after you we eat and you tell me about all the gross shite you had to deal with today, we could watch it.”
It was true -- on the way to his flat, she had not so subtly mentioned that it felt like she was being invited into a vampire’s home before delving into a scene by scene explanation of the better half of Twilight. Harry had openly admitted to not really liking the film but he let’s her rant and rave anyway, even offered his commentary on what he did remember from it. Y/N thinks it’s the first time anyone other than her mother let her express the teenage nostalgia that still resonated with her and the movies as a whole.
And for him to put it on for them to watch? In his beautiful flat that smelled like him? Where she would be fed, be able to chat about her day with someone other than Ubbe, feel warm and happy? She couldn’t think of a better way to spend her time.
“As long as we can cuddle, I think this might be the perfect night.” She tells him and he rolls his eyes playfully, teasing her with a squeeze at her ticklish sides.
“Of course, we’re going to cuddle. You think I spent the last four months pining after you, just for us not to cuddle?”
Y/N lets her eyes flutter shut, leans into him, and smiles.

Euphories (Sykkuno x reader imagine)
well hello everyone, its me. It’s my first post here, so I kinda don’t know how to act, well, I’m trying to be natural but as you can see, I failed on the start so maybe we can skip this awkward attempt to make a good impression.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
summary: You always liked video games and vintage aesthetic, so when you saw a strange signboard informing about small shop with games and videotapes in your town, you can’t help but go there and check it out. They say that curiosity killed the cat, but when you entered the shop you weren’t sure if you’re dying from curiosity, but maybe from the cuteness in stranger’s smile.
based on the plot from “Euphories” Videoclub
Tumblr media
It was getting darker, when you left your apartment and went for a small walk. You always liked to catch fresh air before sleep, and even more you liked summer sunsets and evenings. It was something magical in beautiful view, accompaned by natural sounds of your small town - quiet music from restaurants, laughing kids, jingles from trams. For others it could be bothering, but for you, it was not. Delicate ambient sounds was calming your nerves and taking your mind away from busy day of working you had just finished. You wandered the narrow streets and watched light plays on the walls of apartment houses around you. The air started to get cooler and more fresh, so you breathed it deeper. You know this town like your own pocket - you grew up here and have great memories from your childhood, which returned to you during walks like this. Sometimes you were playing outdoors with your friends, sometimes when the weather were not that good you stayed  home and played video games with your older brother. You smiled when you recalled this memories - you shared this passion with your brother and you both were spending a lot of time breaking records and learning new techniques. It was fun. You were lost in memories when you heard little squeak from your left side. Your head turned in direction of the sound and you started searching source of it. You spotted something fluffy under the small signboard that was standing in archway to apartment house. Small creature looked at you from it’s place, watching you with big, cat eyes and squeaked again.  - Oh, hi buddy. - you cooed at this poor thing, your eyes roaming surroundings and catch the better sight of signboard. Join us on the time travel, was written on dark surface with pale letters. Under text was drawing of video tapes and gaming pad, and the signboard was wrapped in the colorful lights. You didn’t know that it was shop like this in your town, so you immediately grew curious. It was quiet again, you looked around but there was no signs of a cat. You shrugged shoulders.
- Hope you have a place to sleep, kitty. - you murmured as if it could hear or understand you. Your thoughts returned to mysterious signboard and you take a look at it again. There was small arrow pointed at the dark archway. You took a few steps closer to look inside and you spotted another signboard - this one was with neon letters, which were saying: Video Games And Film Tapes. You calculated in your mind if checking this shop will be worth your time, but your curiosity won the battle and you started to walk down the archway. Neon sign stayed behind you as you walked, echo of your steps getting louder. When you get to the end of this tunnel, in front of your eyes appeared warmly lit up shop window with small, colorful posters of game heroes and movie stars. Window was huge and encouraged you to enter the shop. Before you geto to the door, you started to be afraid if the shop is still open for today. But you didn’t spotted any signs, so you grab the doorknoob and twisted it. To your joy door opened and soon you were inside the shop. Small bell jingled and announced your entering. When you took your surroundings, you gasped with delight. Colorful tree lights and posters were hanging on the walls, making a magical, warm athmosphere. Behind the counter you saw old man, probably the owner of the shop. At first you thought he was talking with someone, but seconds after the realization hit you. You giggled when you realized that sounds he was making actually was snoring and man was deep asleep. But then you started to worry - what if someone was there before you, stole something and this man will wake up and will acuse you of this? Before you even can make any sound or move, you heard someone approaching you.
- Uhm... he- hello. - you turned in the direction of soft boyish voice. In front of you was standing young man, you could say that you both were on similar age, but you have never seen him before. He has dark hair with forelock almost falling on his eyes, and before you could make any statement about this boy in your head, you have to admit that he is extremely cute.
- It is very nice seeing you here, can I help you with something? - he asked with this soft voice, almost avoiding eye contact. You blushed, because your heart almost melted at his words. You knew that he probably welcomed every client here with this phrase, but something in his voice made you feel special.
- Oh, I’m... I came here just to look. - your tongue tangled with words when you realised you are actually supposed to answer his question if you want to make good impression. - I just saw the signboard and thought this place has to be interesting. I really like old video games.  - you said, smiling softly at the boy. He looked away again and you saw small blush creeping his neck. He laughs nervously, automaticly covering up his smiling mouth with his hand.
- Uhm, me too. That’s why I started to working there. - he said and finally looked into your eyes. You knew that your thoughts probably sounded cliche, but you could swear that there was something sparkling in his eyes, something that awaken butterflies under your heart. You were rather shy with new people and you never know how you found the courage to keep the conversation going, but quiet voice in your head were whispering to you to not waste this opportunity.
- Actually if I am here...- you started, not knowing if it’s a good idea, but it was your only idea to spend some more time with cute stranger. - ... I can take a look of games that you have here. Could you show me the way?
The boy’s eyes sparkled with joy at your question and you again almost melted when you’ve heard his giggle.
- Okay, let me show you. - your heart swelled with hope and excitment at his words. He let you to the video games section and you gasp with astonishment. It looked like alley in the library, but the showcases were lower, reaching your shoulders, and not with books, but with games. Some positions were highlighted with small led lamps, some were set in special showcases with small retro gadgets - figurines of game heroes, key chains, models etc. - Wow, you’ve got here every parts of the Legends of Astoria! - you gasped, mindlessly pointing at the shelf with your beloved game. - It was my favourite, till the Prince in Distress were announced!
- Oh, I see you’ve played as much as me. - your companion chuckled soflty. - My favourite game was Space Ruler.
- Oh, really? - you asked, really amazed. - I loved it, I had every VHS in my special collection. I always adore princess Aria, she was my favourite heroine of all the time. Boy stayed silent for a moment, looking at you with contemplative face. Then he turned away and started to look for something on the lowest shelf.
- Hmm, I’m pretty sure you didn’t have this part. - he said finally, turning his face to you and coming a bit closer. - It is a special edition, limited. This is one from four avaliable pieces of this part.
You couldn’t believe your ears, when you heard his statement. It sounded ubelievable, but he was right - you have never seen this piece and you were sure of it.
- Oh my...- you whispered, gently reaching to touch the cover of cassette. Your fingers gently brushed plastic surface. For a second you had a prickling sensation, but it finished faster than you could say.
- Do you want to hold it? - boy asked, looking at you with warm smile. Something like hope were glistening in his eyes.
- Can I? - you really wanted to feel VHS in your hands. From what boy were saying and your own thoughts you were sure that this cassette is worth a fortune. He nodded in answer and held out his hand. When you catch game with your palm, somethins strange happened. Suddenly you were not holding game, but boy’s hand, and your surroundings started to spin and flicker. You didn’t know whats happening, and then you started to fall. Air was ruffling your hair and you started to scream. You looked around and spotted your companion. He had a really shocked expression on his face, and you saw a guilt in his eyes.
- Close your eyes and don’t let go of my hand! - he tried to shout, but you had a feeling that his voice was to soft to do this, but you understood him anyway. You can’t do much in this situation, you could just hold him for your dear life and pray to stay alive. part 2
[INTERVIEW] Lay - 200819 Rolling Stone India: “How Lay Zhang Claimed The Throne of M-pop”
"The singer-songwriter and producer offers an in-depth look into his latest record ‘Lit,’ his evolution as an artist and finding the balance between East and West
Tumblr media
When I last spoke to Lay Zhang in 2018, he was embarking on an ambitious but daunting journey to bring Mandarin pop aka M-pop to the world. “I hope they think, ‘This artist isn’t bad,’” he had said with some trepidation in his voice. “I hope that they find my music special and maybe… they’ll want to learn more about me and Chinese music.” The singer-songwriter and producer aspired to create a true hybrid of traditional and modern music, a sound that defines our generation’s ability to package the past for the future.
Zhang, more commonly known by his stage name LAY, first debuted in 2012 as a member of world-famous K-pop group, EXO. Although he remains a member of the group, he’s spent the last couple of years in China to focus on a solo career and spotlight his own country’s burgeoning pop scene. It’s a process he kicked off with his second studio album Namanana in 2018, but he was still some time away from realizing his dream of pushing Chinese pop to a global stage.
It’s been nearly two years since our conversation for Rolling Stone India’s November 2018 cover feature, and any signs of trepidation are a thing of the past for LAY. We could chalk it up to him being two years older and wiser, but I’d like to think it’s because he kept his promise to bring M-pop to the world. If Namanana was just a dip in the pool of fusion experimentation, his latest studio album Lit is the deep dive.
“It is the evolution of M-pop for me,” LAY explains. “I wanted to take it to another level. When you hear the Chinese instruments, you know it is a different sound and vibe. The style is more pop, R&B, and hip-hop influenced with the Chinese instruments thoughtfully mixed in.” Comprising a total of 12 songs (all written and co-produced by LAY) Lit was released as two EPs instead of one LP; the first dropped in June while the second made its appearance in July. Nearly every track presents a fresh blend of traditional Chinese instruments like the hulusi, guzheng, flutes and gong with modern genres like trap, R&B, soul, hip-hop, future bass, dubstep and more. It’s a complex, refined and intricate record, utilizing production techniques that clearly outline LAY’s growth as an artist over the past two years. In retrospect, Namanana comes across a slightly more naive record–innocent and optimistic with a hope that international audiences would embrace both M-pop and LAY. Lit however seeks to take a different path and carves out the future LAY envisions with cool confidence and fearless production.
Tumblr media
The tracks seesaw smoothly from Mandarin to English and back, with LAY showcasing both his vocal and rap skills. It’s an extremely powerful and expansive album, hair-raising at some moments due to the sheer surprises the artist packs in (at one point I hear what sounds like the tabla on “Call My Name” and it catches me totally off-guard.) Some of the collaborators on the record include big names like hip-hop hitmaker Murda Beatz, Grammy Award-winning producer Scott Storch, composer and producer Mitchell Owens and Grammy-nominated songwriter Mike Daley to name a few. For the title track “Lit,” LAY recruited China-native Anti-General who created a vicious and chilling trap/dubstep beat to complement lyrics that decimate LAY’s haters, gossip-mongers and the media, challenging them to come forward and take him down if they dare. The track sees the singer-songwriter rightfully crown himself a ‘king’ and leader in the music industry.
If that wasn’t enough, the music video for “Lit” is without a doubt one of the best released in 2020. With hundreds of extras, dancers, impeccable CGI and a compelling storyline, it’s more movie than music video, portraying LAY as a warrior king who refuses to be defeated. As executive producer, music director and co-choreographer on the project, LAY pays homage to China’s rich history and culture with tons of historical references and traditional symbolism. I tell him I particularly loved the symbolism of a white lotus emerging untouched and pure from the black ink–representing LAY’s rise in the industry–and he shares that the magnificent dragon that appears at the end was his personal favorite. “It was super important that we added it in,” he says. “It represents my wishes, aspirations and my relentless desire to always pursue perfection in the works that I create. I want my dancing, visuals, and music to be the very best it possibly can be.”
Lit is also thematically more complex and layered than any of LAY’s previous works, exploring concepts that revolve around confidence, love, fame, the media, success and more. “The album continues to explore chasing your dream,” the singer explains. “This time it’s about more personal things in my life. Like hometown, family and self-doubt.” A phonetic play on the word for lotus (莲 / lian) in Mandarin, ‘lit’ is a clever pun used to describe LAY’s similarity to a lotus and his prowess as a musician. He named the album after the lotus because of the symbolism of it growing and blossoming from dirt or mud. The lotus also continues the theme of duality with Lit’s two-part release, and, according to LAY’s team, “represents a new birth plus a new sound in the midst of all his past achievements.”
The album’s success more than speaks for itself– when the pre-order for Lit went live on China’s QQ Music streaming platform, nine certification records were instantly broken as it surpassed 1.5 million pre-orders within seven minutes and 19 seconds. This immediately pushed the EP to Number One on QQ Music’s daily and weekly album sales charts. Lit has also made LAY the best-selling artist in China in 2020, with a whopping 2.5 million records sold. It’s a testament to his drive and determination as an artist, the attention to detail and refusal to back down. The record’s international success was no less, hitting top 10 positions on iTunes charts across 32 countries, bagging 21 Number One spots and firmly cementing LAY’s position as the global megastar that he is.
Tumblr media
Some things however, never change; brand deals, TV shows, multiple singles, EPs and collaborations keep his schedule completely booked and– just like back in 2018– it’s extremely tough to pin him down for a conversation. He’s currently in the middle of filming a reality show and has several other projects in the pipeline, but still makes the time to catch up and answer a few questions for Rolling Stone India. In this exclusive interview, LAY details his most successful record yet, the journey of finding the balance between East and West, dealing with the dark side of media attention and why the relationship between an artist and their fans needs to be a two-way street.
Congratulations on the release and tremendous success of Lit! It is an absolutely phenomenal record and I was thrilled to see you explore so many new streams of production. Can you tell me a little bit about the process of making this album and do you feel you met your own expectations for it?
For this album I wanted to mix in Chinese traditional instruments and tell Chinese stories. It is the evolution of M-pop for me. I wanted to take it to another level. When you hear the Chinese instruments you know it is a different sound and vibe. It is hard to say if I met my own expectations. As an artist you never ever feel your work is perfect. You can always find spots where you can improve. But I think what I was able to do with my team in the time we had was great.
You dove deeper into the fusion of tradition and modernity on this album than Namanana—there was a larger variety of Chinese instruments used as well as bilingual wordplay with language in the lyrics. In what ways do you feel you’ve evolved as a producer and songwriter since that album to Lit?
I am still trying to find the right style and combination to share my music and Chinese culture with the world. Lit was an example of my growth. I had this desire to include traditional stories and instruments from Chinese culture. Trying to find the balance with the Western music was challenging. I had to think and spend a lot of time arranging the chords around and fitting everything together. Also with this album I am talking about things in a more personal level and taking time to explain with more of an artistic style. I feel like I am growing up on this journey.
Lit is the first part of a series of EPs which will make a whole LP—why did you want to release it in this format and when did you begin working on the record?
I split it into two parts to give time to people to listen to it. I feel like if I released 12 songs at once, people may not give enough time to listen to each track. But when there are just six tracks each time, then it gives people time to listen more carefully. I started this project maybe early 2019.
The title track “Lit” is about your battle with the media, hateful netizens and malicious comments/rumors. Does it get easier over time to deal with this obsessive analysis of your life or does it never really ebb away?
It will always bother you, but over time you learn to deal with it. You focus on it less and less and back on what you love doing. When I make my music or learn dance or do anything I love, I kind of forget about it. Just focus on your goals and dreams and everything else becomes background noise.
The music for “Lit” is, in my opinion, the best of 2020 so far. Can you tell me a little about your role as the executive producer and music director on this project? How did the concept come about?
I was very involved in the project. I oversaw a lot of things that happened and discussed with almost everyone on the team on how to achieve my vision. When I was making the song I was thinking about how do we share Chinese culture. I thought filming in an ancient palace would catch people’s attention. It took off from there when discussing with the director. We started adding more and more elements of Chinese culture. We were trying to tell the story of Xiang Yu, a warlord who rebelled against the mighty Qin Dynasty but wasn’t able to conquer China. I’m Xiang Yu, but I’m trying to change my fate and succeed in my goal.
You incorporated Chinese Peking Opera in the music video version of the track and visual elements of Peking Opera in the album art for “Jade”–What was the motivation behind that decision and is there a particular story that the opera section references?
I wanted to bring people back in time to ancient China. I reference the traditional Chinese story of Xiang Yu and his love, Concubine Yu, so then I added in select passages from the Peking Opera Farewell My Concubine which tells their tragic story.
You displayed your incredible skills in dancing in this music video and you recently talked about how dancing was a way for you to show the audience who you are. Did you feel a sense of relief that the audience can see you or understand you a bit better after the release of “Lit”? Can the audience ever truly understand an artist?
It feels good to know people can see me and understand me more. I don’t think people can ever understand an artist completely. But they can relate to many things. I think that is a challenge for an artist to see how they can use their music to connect with people. It is a worthy challenge.
How do you hope that the artist you are today crafts the Lay Zhang of tomorrow?
I always believe in working hard and improving. I hope that the Lay Zhang of tomorrow continues to keep looking for ways to improve his art. I hope he never gives up his dreams.
Last time we spoke, we talked about Asian traditions represented in global mainstream pop culture. Now as you’ve grown as a megastar, you are one of the leading names in pop filling that space, bringing your heritage to the stage. Why is it important for our generation to see ourselves and our histories represented on these platforms by artists?
It is important for people to remember where they come from. They should know their own history and how their culture came to be. Also, it lets other people know another culture and have a deeper understanding. It can stop miscommunication and it helps people be closer to each other.
Tumblr media
Why do fans need to see themselves in an artist? Does it work the same on the other side, do you as an artist see yourself in your fans?
I want fans to be able to relate with an artist. It is important for a fan to see themselves in artist and an artist to see themselves in a fan. When you can see each other you are able to understand each other better. You can connect with each other and really feel things.
I absolutely love the ‘Re-Reaction’ videos you have been doing for years and it means a lot to your fans that you take the time to do it. Why did you want to do this series and what does it mean to you to be able to connect with your fans like this and see them react to your work?
I am curious to know what fans and people think of my work. I want to know where I can improve. I want to keep growing as an artist. But also I want to let my fans know that I am reading their comments and I see everything they say.
Other than releasing more music, what are the rest of your plans for 2020? Do you have any film projects that you’re looking at taking up or are you planning on doing something completely different?
I am busy filming a TV drama and a few reality TV shows for the rest of 2020. A very busy schedule.”
Type of ship ━ Familial, siblings
Words to describe the ship ━ Caring, low-key, common interest
Song to describe the ship ━ Stay by Ateez
These two are a lot closer than people believe them to be. However, compared to the relationship Perrie has with the other Dream members, it is easy to believe these two aren't as close. However, out of all the members, Perrie is most similar to Renjun in likes and dislikes. The two share very similar hobbies and these are actually what brought them closer to one another. The two of them both really like drawing, painting, etc and they like to share and do this together because they have different techniques and ideas.
The two do not spend a lot of one on one time together but whenever Perrie was in Dream or when she was visiting the Dream members, she always made sure to take care of him and watch out for him just like she did for the other members. Since Perrie is the oldest in Dream, she feels like she has to live up to that role and take care of her members. While they all try to make it easier on her, Renjun is someone who tries to help her out the most since he is the third oldest.
When Renjun first started to get to know Perrie and when he learned about her BPD, he was a bit confused on how to act around her and it did cause some slight awkwardness but that was quickly fixed with the help of the other members. Honestly, he felt bad that she had to deal with that on top of the hate and everything she gets. Therefore, it set his resolve to help her out more.
The fans really want to the two to release a song together. They have actually gotten snippets of what seemed like a song, but nothing has ever been released or announced. However, Perrie has mentioned that she likes to use Renjun's voice for her demos - especially when it comes to slower and more emotional songs. Perrie thinks that he does a very good job at capturing emotions in a song so she likes to include him in it. They also come up with concept art together sometimes. Although, it has never been used yet but Perrie has shown previous work they've done together on Vlive.
Honestly, one of the most underrated friendships. The two have called each other their best friends multiple times. While they may not always have a lot of obvious on screen moments, if you look close enough you can see them subtly taking care of one another - especially Jeno. As a result many people have pointed out how Jeno is very tsundere like with her. Whenever she is struggling with something, he is always one of the first to help but he doesn't make a big deal of it. However, Perrie is still a very affection person and Jeno is someone who will always accept it. It is not uncommon to see Perrie leaning against him or resting her head on him.
Both have very chill personalities and are usually the more docile ones out of the Dreamies, so the two tend to be together a lot. As a result, the two have gotten very close to one another. The two tend to rant towards one another whenever they need to get something off of their chests. Whenever, this happens one person will just listen and offer the other person any type of comfort they want. This usually led to them ordering in food and watching a film until they fell asleep. He has also convinced her to play video games with him some of these times.  As a result of this, the two have a very good understanding of one another and can read one another very well.
While compared to Perrie, he might not be as physically affection, but he has claimed the spot as Perrie's #1 fan. She's released a song? He's already heard it. She has a moment on stage? He's seen it. He just seems to know everything about her and keeps an eye on her even when they are not together. He constantly supporting her in both obvious and less obvious ways.
The two have multiple matching jewelrys. The main ones are their ear piercings and the rings they were on their pinky fingers. They got custom rings and made them to fit their pinky finger because they have a handshake that require them to connect them. They also tend to kiss each others rings before going on stage as a pre-stage ritual.
Type of ship ━ Flirty, close friends, Romantic, Philia
Words to describe the ship ━ Loving, affectionate, caring, doting
Song to describe the ship ━ Let me love you by Ne-Yo.
Are they dating? Or are they just best friends? With their friendship, there are time people are 50% sure there is something going on, and then the other time people are 50% sure that they are just close friends. The both are very affectionate people and Jaemin was actually one of the first members to be physically affectionate with her so he kind of broke that awkwardness between her and the rest of the boys being affectionate.
Jaemin is someone who dotes on the people he cares off, so it is not uncommon to see him dotting and taking care of Perrie. Perrie does the same but her ways seems abit more harsh. She really worries about him and his habits - especially his coffee - so she tries to make sure he is taking care of himself. She has on a few occasions where he ate nothing and tried to drink coffee, thrown away his drink when he wasn't looking. When he went on his hiatus, Perrie made sure to keep in contact with him so that he would not feel or harder any negative feelings like feeling that he was letting the other members down by not being able to promote. Then when Perrie went on her Hiatus, he wanted to do the same thing but was unsure about how to approach the situation since they were quite different.
When Perrie got back from her hiatus, there was a change in Jaemin that not many people would notice. He was obviously caring beforehand, but after her hiatus he seemed to make it his mission to keep her happy and as a result sometime he would treat her like she was younger than him. However, even if this bothered her sometimes, she tried not to say anything after she learned why he was acting this way.
One thing many fans have pointed out is the way he looks and acts towards her. Whenever she is talking or trying to get others to listen - like the dreamies - he will always give her his undivided attention. The two of them are also very unfiltered with one another. If he ever has a questions, no matter how embarrassing or personal they are, Perrie is one of the first ones he will go to.
Song to describe the ship ━ Brave by Sara Bareilles
Sometimes he is her favorite child, other times he is the annoying little brother your stuck with but still adore and would do anything for. First off do not sadden, anger, or hurt him because Perrie will not hold back on protecting him and making sure he is happy and laughing. Since he is one of the youngest of the group, Perrie feels like she needs to watch out for him and make sure the idol life isn't affecting him to much.
Perrie is someone who ends up teaching him a lot without even realizing. Perrie is someone who can be very blunt and honest, so she doesn't tend to sugarcoat many things like other people do and this has lead Chenle to learn things from her both directly and indirectly. Fans have pointed out the Chenle seemed to have adapted many of her mannerisms and way of talking, which many find quite adorable.
The two have a very pure and loving relationship. Perrie is very affectionate and Chenle is someone who will soak up her affection and is never shy about rubbing it in the other member's faces. Chenle really loves her voice and he has a playlist on her phone that is composed of just her songs or songs she was featured in. His ringtone is also one of his favorite songs that he got Perrie to sing for him.
No one know this except fo the other members, but when Perrie had to get surgery, all of the 127 members were busy so Chenle ended up staying with her almost everyday at the hospital with her. He nearly convinced her to stay at his house for a little bit but Perrie in the end said no because she did not want to intrude on his parents, even though she talks to them regularly - most to let them know about how Chenle is doing.
Type of ship ━ Familial, brother-sister
Words to describe the ship ━ loving, clingy, family
Song to describe the ship ━ stand by you by Rachel Platten
Perrie may not admit that she has a favorite member, but many people suspect that it is Jisung. Towards debut and before, the two of them were very close and many people noticed how he tended to stick by her. This was because she was actually the first person he met when he entered SM. However, there were some people who spun this out of control and said their friendship was odd because of the age difference. People went after Hannah calling her names because she openly cared for him - more so compared to other members - and others went after him calling him a moocher because of how he tended to gravitate towards her in a lot of situation.
However, after a few years people noticed that two were getting closer again. Whenever it comes to affection, he usually doesn't like being babied, but when it comes to Hannah that is a completely different story. She will baby him like no one else and in the end he always melts and allows it. However, it is never in a way that make him feel like a toddler, but rather just someone who Hannah adores. Like with Chenle, Hannah will do anything to make sure he is happy and not being disrespected.
There is just a difference with their friendship compared to others. They have a very soft friendship and many people notice how important their friendship is with one another. Hannah is someone who he has no problem opening up to and he really does depend on her whenever he is feeling stressed or missing his family. Hannah wants the younger members to have something similar to a childhood so she will spoil them, but especially Jisung because he is the youngest. Anything he wants, he will get. If he wants to go out at 2 in the morning and no one else will, even if she is sick or tired she will still agree.
The two of them love dancing with one another. He really looks up to her when it comes to dancing and will always ask for her input and help. He prefers when its is just the two of them together in the studio so he will always try to convince her to tell the other members to leave - since most of the time they will listen to her. People are continually asking for a video of them dancing together. The two of them joined 'Why not the dancer?" together.
Reflections on Mulan
It took me a long time to cherish my Taiwanese-American heritage. Growing up in the United States, it wasn’t a facet of my identity that I attached any importance to. As a child, I even actively denied that part of me. Whenever my family went out to eat Chinese food, I threw a temper tantrum and would only eat if we stopped by fast food first. I didn’t bother speaking Chinese; I replied to my Mom’s Mandarin in English and I consistently repeated the entry level class for my Saturday Chinese-school until I was not compelled to go anymore. The only attempt to understand the vast history and traditions of my culture was acknowledging the bare minimum to profit off of the New Years.
While there are many reasons for my delayed acceptance of my culture and identity, the portrayal of Asians in Western Society was definitely a significant factor. Similar to many young children, I was deeply impacted by television and movies. My weeks were organized by TV show airtimes and the few times I was able to go to the movies were momentous occasions. I idolized the heroes on screen, wishing to become just like them. However, what I saw on the screen never closely resembled me. Almost all Western media featured white protagonists, and in the few moments there was somebody of Chinese descent, they were essentially a one-dimensional caricature that was completely unrelatable (for men, choose either kung fu master or a super nerd, and for women, choose an exotic hypersexualized love interest or submissive wallflower). Many values are actively defined and imprinted at a societal level, and this one was no different. The messaging from Hollywood was loud and clear: there is nothing valuable about being Asian American; this culture only deserves to be simplified to basic tropes.
To my delight, as my own relationship with my culture deepened and flourished over the decades, it seemed that the media’s portrayal of Asians were finally evolving as well. First starting on the fringes, with Asian-American content creators using new platforms such as YouTube to reach directly to their audience, then slowly creeping into the mainstream, with sitcoms and major blockbuster films. Finally, Asian-Americans can be cast as characters that were complex and interesting. Their only defining feature wasn’t just that they were Asian! Similar to white actors and actresses, it was just another part of their identity. Witnessing Asians star in these multifaceted roles has been amazing given how the landscape was just a few years prior.
I also understand that at the end of the day media is a business, and for this movement to not be temporary, Asians need to throw their full support when these things happen. Personally, I watched Crazy Rich Asians four times (two times in theaters, once on a plane, and then renting again at home to show my mom), and I’ve been subscribed to Wong Fu’s Patreon ever since I’ve learned of it. So of course, given this momentous live-action remaking of Mulan, I’ve been at the edge of my seat, excited and ready to support.
Especially given the cultural phenomenon that was Black Panther, I was ecstatic that Disney was going to take on Mulan again. While many were bemoaning the exclusion of Mushu, Shang and those classic songs, I actually grew more excited since the director stated that she made those decisions to be more faithful to the original legend. The anticipation kept growing and growing as the pandemic forcibly pushed back the release again and again. Until finally, this past Friday’s release on Disney+, where I eagerly paid the additional $30 premium access to be among the first to support the movie.
My disappointment was immeasurable.
While there are many major flaws to dive deep into regarding this movie (especially the superpowers that weaken the narrative of a woman fighting to be seen as an equal in a patriarchal society), I wanted to spend some time to speak on some smaller details that yanked me out of the immersion by how grossly misrepresented it was. In life, it’s the small actions that build up to communicate your intent. Love is shown by showing care and consistency in the tiniest of details; however, in this case, the small details accumulated to disrespect and disregard instead. These cultural details clearly didn’t matter to the people designing this film.
Warning slight spoilers ahead, but nothing too major if you’re familiar with the story.
The villagers from Mulan’s hometown all lived together in a Tulou (土樓), a circular earthen hut that can house many families. However these buildings are a facet of the Hakka people living in Fujian originating from the 12th century. Mulan’s story takes place in the Northern Wei Dynasty; which occurs during 386 to 534 AD and is, as the name describes, in the northern part of China. Not only is it geographically inaccurate, but there is a time difference of 600+ years there! That would be akin to placing a modern skyscraper penthouse into the Renaissance.
As someone who is learning more about Chinese tea to connect to their culture, the teapot used during the matchmaking scene was equally jarring. The teapot was a Yokode kyusu, a teapot that has a side handle 90 degrees from the sprout. While Japanese tea culture was originally imported from China during the Song Dynasty, the cultures have significantly diverged. Each has their unique vessels, tools, and processing techniques worthy of celebrating (matcha vs pu’er, sencha vs oolong, yokode kyusu vs yixing). However, maybe to the creators of this movie, east Asian culture is just all the same to them.
The phoenix was a central character in the movie, and to the chagrin of many fans of the original, Mushu’s replacement. As the Hua family’s ancestral guardian spirit, it provided a nice symbolism for Mulan, as her character’s male persona dies and she is reborn as Hua Mulan. What is egregious is that Phoenixes are not even an animal within Chinese folklore, that’s a Western (Greek) myth! While some may point out that there is a Chinese mythical bird called the Fenghuang (鳳凰), these are immortal birds that only choose to visit regions when there is peace and prosperity. What it definitely is NOT is a reincarnating bird leading warriors into the heat of battle. Sure, Fenghuang are genderfluid and that does match Mulan, but why was the only emphasized trait of the bird the aspect from Greek lore? Why bother taking out Mushu to be closer to the original if it’s replacement is a Western myth?
Finally, I have to bring up the obvious change in accents that happened when Mulan changed from a kid to an adult. Why cast a child actor with an American accent if the main character has a Chinese accent? There is no way that any other movie with a 200M+ budget would have allowed a white child actor to speak with an American accent, to then change it to a British accent when that character grew up and not even acknowledge it. Are we just supposed to be okay with it since they’re at least both Chinese looking?
No movie will ever be picture perfect in representing any culture, trade-offs are inevitable. However, I can’t see how those choices above added anything. Why would you make the villagers live in a Tulou? Was it critical to the plot? Every other Mulan adaptation is fine without a Greek Phoenix, why make it so necessary to this re-telling? Those small details exposed the attitude that I was all too familiar with growing up: who cares about representing actual Chinese culture?
After watching that movie, it felt as if the creative process was a room of white people gathered together, cherry-picking what fit their own narrative, sprinkling some Asian artifacts throughout, shrugging and saying to each other “That’s Chinese-y right? Good enough for me!” Imagine my lack of surprise when I checked to see that none of the screenwriters, producers or director had an Asian background. Chinese culture is the longest continuing culture in the world. It deserves to be shared for what it is (warts and all), not to be trivialized into a simplified palette that’s easiest to digest. Chinese representation in Western media should be about collaborating with us as peers, not to be used as a tool to extract the growing affluence of the Chinese and it’s diaspora.
I so badly wanted this to be a celebration, but now it’s a lose-lose situation. I wouldn’t want the younger version of me to watch this. It would have pushed me further away from my culture; I would either not relate to the characters alluding to “honor” every other sentence, or I would see that my culture isn’t worth even having just one person in this $200M major blockbuster film correct the gross cultural inaccuracies. On the other hand, I also don’t want critics to point at bad numbers and proclaim that Asian representation isn’t worth the investment.
I just wish for us to be portrayed as who we truly are.
200819 How Lay Zhang Claimed The Throne of M-pop
When I last spoke to Lay Zhang in 2018, he was embarking on an ambitious but daunting journey to bring Mandarin pop aka M-pop to the world. “I hope they think, ‘This artist isn’t bad,’” he had said with some trepidation in his voice. “I hope that they find my music special and maybe… they’ll want to learn more about me and Chinese music.” The singer-songwriter and producer aspired to create a true hybrid of traditional and modern music, a sound that defines our generation’s ability to package the past for the future.
Zhang, more commonly known by his stage name LAY, first debuted in 2012 as a member of world-famous K-pop group, EXO. Although he remains a member of the group, he’s spent the last couple of years in China to focus on a solo career and spotlight his own country’s burgeoning pop scene. It’s a process he kicked off with his second studio album Namanana in 2018, but he was still some time away from realizing his dream of pushing Chinese pop to a global stage.
It’s been nearly two years since our conversation for Rolling Stone India’s November 2018 cover feature, and any signs of trepidation are a thing of the past for LAY. We could chalk it up to him being two years older and wiser, but I’d like to think it’s because he kept his promise to bring M-pop to the world. If Namanana was just a dip in the pool of fusion experimentation, his latest studio album Lit is the deep dive.
“It is the evolution of M-pop for me,” LAY explains. “I wanted to take it to another level. When you hear the Chinese instruments, you know it is a different sound and vibe. The style is more pop, R&B, and hip-hop influenced with the Chinese instruments thoughtfully mixed in.” Comprising a total of 12 songs (all written and co-produced by LAY) Lit was released as two EPs instead of one LP; the first dropped in June while the second made its appearance in July. Nearly every track presents a fresh blend of traditional Chinese instruments like the hulusi, guzheng, flutes and gong with modern genres like trap, R&B, soul, hip-hop, future bass, dubstep and more. It’s a complex, refined and intricate record, utilizing production techniques that clearly outline LAY’s growth as an artist over the past two years. In retrospect, Namanana comes across a slightly more naive record–innocent and optimistic with a hope that international audiences would embrace both M-pop and LAY. Lit however seeks to take a different path and carves out the future LAY envisions with cool confidence and fearless production.
“’Lit’ continues to explore chasing your dream. This time it’s about more personal things in my life. Like hometown, family and self-doubt.” Photo: Courtesy of Zhang Yixing Studio
The tracks seesaw smoothly from Mandarin to English and back, with LAY showcasing both his vocal and rap skills. It’s an extremely powerful and expansive album, hair-raising at some moments due to the sheer surprises the artist packs in (at one point I hear what sounds like the tabla on “Call My Name” and it catches me totally off-guard.) Some of the collaborators on the record include big names like hip-hop hitmaker Murda Beatz, Grammy Award-winning producer Scott Storch, composer and producer Mitchell Owens and Grammy-nominated songwriter Mike Daley to name a few. For the title track “Lit,” LAY recruited China-native Anti-General who created a vicious and chilling trap/dubstep beat to complement lyrics that decimate LAY’s haters, gossip-mongers and the media, challenging them to come forward and take him down if they dare. The track sees the singer-songwriter rightfully crown himself a ‘king’ and leader in the music industry.
If that wasn’t enough, the music video for “Lit” is without a doubt one of the best released in 2020. With hundreds of extras, dancers, impeccable CGI and a compelling storyline, it’s more movie than music video, portraying LAY as a warrior king who refuses to be defeated. As executive producer, music director and co-choreographer on the project, LAY pays homage to China’s rich history and culture with tons of historical references and traditional symbolism. I tell him I particularly loved the symbolism of a white lotus emerging untouched and pure from the black ink–representing LAY’s rise in the industry–and he shares that the magnificent dragon that appears at the end was his personal favorite. “It was super important that we added it in,” he says. “It represents my wishes, aspirations and my relentless desire to always pursue perfection in the works that I create. I want my dancing, visuals, and music to be the very best it possibly can be.”
Lit is also thematically more complex and layered than any of LAY’s previous works, exploring concepts that revolve around confidence, love, fame, the media, success and more. “The album continues to explore chasing your dream,” the singer explains. “This time it’s about more personal things in my life. Like hometown, family and self-doubt.” A phonetic play on the word for lotus (莲 / lian) in Mandarin, ‘lit’ is a clever pun used to describe LAY’s similarity to a lotus and his prowess as a musician. He named the album after the lotus because of the symbolism of it growing and blossoming from dirt or mud. The lotus also continues the theme of duality with Lit’s two-part release, and, according to LAY’s team, “represents a new birth plus a new sound in the midst of all his past achievements.”
The album’s success more than speaks for itself– when the pre-order for Lit went live on China’s QQ Music streaming platform, nine certification records were instantly broken as it surpassed 1.5 million pre-orders within seven minutes and 19 seconds. This immediately pushed the EP to Number One on QQ Music’s daily and weekly album sales charts. Lit has also made LAY the best-selling artist in China in 2020, with a whopping 2.5 million records sold. It’s a testament to his drive and determination as an artist, the attention to detail and refusal to back down. The record’s international success was no less, hitting top 10 positions on iTunes charts across 32 countries, bagging 21 Number One spots and firmly cementing LAY’s position as the global megastar that he is.
“I don’t think people can ever understand an artist completely. But they can relate to many things. I think that is a challenge for an artist to see how they can use their music to connect with people. It is a worthy challenge.” Photo: Courtesy of Zhang Yixing Studio
Some things however, never change; brand deals, TV shows, multiple singles, EPs and collaborations keep his schedule completely booked and– just like back in 2018– it’s extremely tough to pin him down for a conversation. He’s currently in the middle of filming a reality show and has several other projects in the pipeline, but still makes the time to catch up and answer a few questions for Rolling Stone India. In this exclusive interview, LAY details his most successful record yet, the journey of finding the balance between East and West, dealing with the dark side of media attention and why the relationship between an artist and their fans needs to be a two-way street.
Congratulations on the release and tremendous success of Lit! It is an absolutely phenomenal record and I was thrilled to see you explore so many new streams of production. Can you tell me a little bit about the process of making this album and do you feel you met your own expectations for it?
For this album I wanted to mix in Chinese traditional instruments and tell Chinese stories. It is the evolution of M-pop for me. I wanted to take it to another level. When you hear the Chinese instruments you know it is a different sound and vibe. It is hard to say if I met my own expectations. As an artist you never ever feel your work is perfect. You can always find spots where you can improve. But I think what I was able to do with my team in the time we had was great.
You dove deeper into the fusion of tradition and modernity on this album than Namanana—there was a larger variety of Chinese instruments used as well as bilingual wordplay with language in the lyrics. In what ways do you feel you’ve evolved as a producer and songwriter since that album to Lit?
I am still trying to find the right style and combination to share my music and Chinese culture with the world. Lit was an example of my growth. I had this desire to include traditional stories and instruments from Chinese culture. Trying to find the balance with the Western music was challenging. I had to think and spend a lot of time arranging the chords around and fitting everything together. Also with this album I am talking about things in a more personal level and taking time to explain with more of an artistic style. I feel like I am growing up on this journey.
Lit is the first part of a series of EPs which will make a whole LP—why did you want to release it in this format and when did you begin working on the record?
I split it into two parts to give time to people to listen to it. I feel like if I released 12 songs at once, people may not give enough time to listen to each track. But when there are just six tracks each time, then it gives people time to listen more carefully. I started this project maybe early 2019.
The title track “Lit” is about your battle with the media, hateful netizens and malicious comments/rumors. Does it get easier over time to deal with this obsessive analysis of your life or does it never really ebb away?
It will always bother you, but over time you learn to deal with it. You focus on it less and less and back on what you love doing. When I make my music or learn dance or do anything I love, I kind of forget about it. Just focus on your goals and dreams and everything else becomes background noise.
The music for “Lit” is, in my opinion, the best of 2020 so far. Can you tell me a little about your role as the executive producer and music director on this project? How did the concept come about?
I was very involved in the project. I oversaw a lot of things that happened and discussed with almost everyone on the team on how to achieve my vision. When I was making the song I was thinking about how do we share Chinese culture. I thought filming in an ancient palace would catch people’s attention. It took off from there when discussing with the director. We started adding more and more elements of Chinese culture. We were trying to tell the story of Xiang Yu, a warlord who rebelled against the mighty Qin Dynasty but wasn’t able to conquer China. I’m Xiang Yu, but I’m trying to change my fate and succeed in my goal.
You incorporated Chinese Peking Opera in the music video version of the track and visual elements of Peking Opera in the album art for “Jade”–What was the motivation behind that decision and is there a particular story that the opera section references?
I wanted to bring people back in time to ancient China. I reference the traditional Chinese story of Xiang Yu and his love, Concubine Yu, so then I added in select passages from the Peking Opera Farewell My Concubine which tells their tragic story.
You displayed your incredible skills in dancing in this music video and you recently talked about how dancing was a way for you to show the audience who you are. Did you feel a sense of relief that the audience can see you or understand you a bit better after the release of “Lit”? Can the audience ever truly understand an artist?
It feels good to know people can see me and understand me more. I don’t think people can ever understand an artist completely. But they can relate to many things. I think that is a challenge for an artist to see how they can use their music to connect with people. It is a worthy challenge.
How do you hope that the artist you are today crafts the Lay Zhang of tomorrow?
I always believe in working hard and improving. I hope that the Lay Zhang of tomorrow continues to keep looking for ways to improve his art. I hope he never gives up his dreams.
Last time we spoke, we talked about Asian traditions represented in global mainstream pop culture. Now as you’ve grown as a megastar, you are one of the leading names in pop filling that space, bringing your heritage to the stage. Why is it important for our generation to see ourselves and our histories represented on these platforms by artists?
It is important for people to remember where they come from. They should know their own history and how their culture came to be. Also, it lets other people know another culture and have a deeper understanding. It can stop miscommunication and it helps people be closer to each other.
“I want to keep growing as an artist. But also I want to let my fans know that I am reading their comments and I see everything they say.” Photo: Courtesy of Zhang Yixing Studio
Why do fans need to see themselves in an artist? Does it work the same on the other side, do you as an artist see yourself in your fans?
I want fans to be able to relate with an artist. It is important for a fan to see themselves in artist and an artist to see themselves in a fan. When you can see each other you are able to understand each other better. You can connect with each other and really feel things.
I absolutely love the ‘Re-Reaction’ videos you have been doing for years and it means a lot to your fans that you take the time to do it. Why did you want to do this series and what does it mean to you to be able to connect with your fans like this and see them react to your work?
I am curious to know what fans and people think of my work. I want to know where I can improve. I want to keep growing as an artist. But also I want to let my fans know that I am reading their comments and I see everything they say.
Other than releasing more music, what are the rest of your plans for 2020? Do you have any film projects that you’re looking at taking up or are you planning on doing something completely different?
I am busy filming a TV drama and a few reality TV shows for the rest of 2020. A very busy schedule.
can you give me advice on how to be a good reader in college? (annotating, reading “critically”, analyzing)?
you have no idea how excited I was to answer this ask! Close reading techniques is something I’ve been working hard at, but a lot of my classes have included techniques on how read closely/critically and assignments focused on developing those skills. Your profs won’t assume you’re an experienced close reader in a 100- or even 200-level course, so don’t stress too much about it.
That said, there are a few things that I find to be really helpful to me when I’m going about some reading!
Focus on the weird. I think of this Isaac Asimov quote all the time - “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but “That’s funny …” This, to me, holds true for literature as well. My best work hasn’t come out of any big epiphanies, but something that seemed weird, or maybe confused me at first. Half the time I’ll read through a work and think “well, this is stupid” and then force myself to do a little more digging and I’ll find something really interesting! If it’s confusing, frustrating, or just odd, try spending a little more time with it or talking to a prof or TA about why it’s bothering you. That’s where almost all of my good stuff has come from.
Learn how to read challenging stuff. Some forms of writing, like plays, or anything with ye olde Englishe Speling, is gonna be hard to get through no matter how good of a reader you are. Try reading the really tough-to-follow stuff aloud to yourself (which, as a bonus, also helps you get a feel for any rhythm in the piece!). And for the love of god, watch plays. Don’t just read them. Watch them with the book open beside you. Your college’s library probably gives you access to filmed productions either on DVDs or online. Make use of them! Not only will it make your workload lighter, it’ll give you a new way to see the text.
Annotate as you go. Annotating when I’m reading helps me remember stuff later for passage identification in exams, and also helps you get a hold of reoccurring themes you might start to pick up on. I would recommend either annotating in the book/pdf/whatever you’re working within the margins, or having a separate file/journal for writing down quotes that intrigue you or seem significant. The first time you read through, it’s good to get initial thoughts or impressions, and not try to get too deep into symbols or whatever until you’ve finished the piece. Then, if you have time, go over it, identify any motifs or themes you might have missed, and go a little deeper if you can. This will probably leave you with at least something vaguely interesting to say in class for participation marks. I personally don’t annotate shorter works, like short poems, when I’m in a survey course that combines different forms, but I do find annotating longer works or similar works helps me remember them. You’ll find what works for you!
Fake it till you make it. Invaluable advice in all scenarios, but especially in close reading assignments and essays. Sometimes, you’ll get assigned a passage or a topic to analyze that’s giving you nothing, and you won’t feel like there’s anything interesting to pounce on. That’s ok! There are a lot of ways to fake start the process once you have a passage you’re interested in. A good prof or TA will tell you their favourite cheats if you ask, but here are some of mine. Pick an interesting word and look up the definition and etymology. Using the implications or other meanings will probably give you something interesting to consider. This is especially useful when reading in Old/Middle English. Make it about sex. Sword? Phallic. Nature? Erotic. Hotel? Trivago. Make use of any innuendo. Anything that uses the word “pricked”. It’s so easy to do, and honestly, whatever you’re reading is probably at least a little horny so it’s ok. Get some historical context. This one obviously depends on the class, but sometimes doing a little more research into a certain person’s life or the time when the work was written will give you some ideas and connections.
Hopefully some of this helps, but like I said, you’ll have support from your TAs and profs to help you become a better reader. Best of luck!
A few resources:
The Harvard Writing Centre has a few guides up, including one on essay writing that I have used. It also has specific info for writing in History, English, Psychology, ect., so it’s really a great all around resource.
I’ve had a prof recommend How To Write a Sentence: And How To Read One by Stanley Fish, not only to improve your own writing but to get a better idea of how to analyze grammar. I haven’t read it yet, but I figured I’d mention it. Ditto George Orwell’s essay Politics and the English Language. Kind of a writing guide, but it might help you learn to think critically on the elements of language and writing.
If you dm me I’d also be happy to share some of my own writing that’s done well so you get an idea of what’s expected from an undergraduate English student.
Interprofessional learning and practise. APT010l003Y (1443 words)
Dramatherapists, whether you’re still in training or have been a registered practitioner in this field for years, we all ‘kind of’ know that other arts therapies’ techniques can creep into our work. We are often encouraging our clients to embody their experiences and feelings and I’m sure you have a stack of arts materials, a box of small world objects and a drum (at the very least) that all make regular appearances in your sessions. We borrow from other modalities regularly, but what’s the link? How relevant are the skills found in the related professions to the work we do with our clients, and to us as therapist? And why is it that they cross over into our field of work seemingly so easily?
I’ve got two left feet, never got the end of ‘three blind mice’ on the recorder at school and can barely draw a half decent stick man, so how can I incorporate dance movement psychotherapy, music therapy, art psychotherapy and or play therapy into my work as a dramatherapist? And should I even bother? Can’t we just stick to what we know and draw on our knowledge and experience using character, story and script work?
I had the opportunity to attend workshops for all other modalities within arts therapy with the aim of gaining some further understanding of why I often incorporate at least some of their techniques in my own work with clients of all ages, across broad and varied settings. The first thing that really struck me about the arts therapies is that they all encourage a type of creativity that often comes naturally to children. When thinking about the development of a very young child before any sort of cognitive understanding or clarity, there often comes sound, movement, play and creativity, all of which can be linked to a means of communication. This concept resonated with Sue Jennings’s developmental paradigm of ‘Embodiment, Projection and Role’ and lectures and research suddenly came hurtling back and reminding me of the importance of understanding a client’s early interactions in relation to self and other.
One of the first things mentioned in the music therapy workshop was the idea of being ‘along side’ a client without the use of words, communicating through a ‘transcendence of language’ and ‘music links with our innermost emotional, spiritual and most private selves, and yet is also a social experience.’ (Stige and Bunt, 2014)
I learnt that a lot of research has been done into the very earliest stages of communication and there is an inherent musicality in pre-verbal infant/carer interactions. During this particular workshop I was struck by the realisation of how powerful and evocative music can be in relation to feelings. You know, every time you hear that specific song and you suddenly feel like you’re headlining your very own world tour? Or the moment in a film when you’re holding back tears and then the music starts and suddenly your popcorn is swimming in a small salty river of your own making? And haven’t we all stared moodily out of the window of a bus or car and imagined ourselves in a music video? No? Just me? Well, if we admit it or not, music can affect us. It can move us, and it can be a vital tool in helping us connect to emotions we may not be able to vocalise and sometimes they may even be feelings we aren’t fully aware of.
(the picture shows just some of the instruments used during the music therapy workshop)
Tumblr media
I found a similar connection during my participation in the dance movement psychotherapy workshop. I learnt that the therapists’ intention is for the client to embody an experience rather than rely solely on words. We were invited to take part in a pair exercise where one person leads, moving as they wish with a motivation or an emotion in mind, and their partner aims to simply be ‘along-side.’ They are not controlling or changing the client’s behaviour but taking the time to notice and support them physically. After all, the therapists’ role is not to try to ‘fix’ but to be ‘with’ the client. This reinforced for me, the importance of considering the whole person when working therapeutically. I have personally found I difficult at times to work in the body both in training to be a dramatherapist and in my previous training as an actor but I also respect and understand how important it is for this type of creative therapeutic work. It is vital we learn to notice what a client is communicating beyond what they may or may not be saying and developing these skills can be particularly important, especially when working with clients who are none verbal or who have limited verbal communication skills. The idea of working with the whole client in therapy, establishing a link between body and mind, which is less commonly found in more traditional and more cognitive therapeutic approaches, appeared paramount across all the arts therapies and is an idea supported by Bessel van der Kolk, in ‘The body keeps the score.’ This book explores how trauma is manifested in the body, it has links to some illness and disease, and it is interesting to see how that may influence our work with our clients.
I experienced a theme of transcendence of language across all the arts therapies as each workshop focused at some point on the therapists’ ability to be along side the client in their expression of self. It was clearly less important to focus on what the client created and much more about what they were communicating. The importance is not on the creation of a piece of music, a dance or a sculpt but it is the lived experience between the client and therapist that offers the most value and space for therapeutic change.
The play therapy workshop put emphasis on giving the child permission, not to change or question their choices but to be alongside, to allow them to play and to be creative. This brought up my desire to ‘fix’ or to ‘make better’ and I often find myself wanting to step into the role of the rescuer and regularly explore this in supervision. The notion that there is no right and wrong is an idea I found, present throughout all modalities and something I learnt in each of these workshops. I found this vital in helping to establish not only a safe space for the child or client to work but also to enable a relationship between client and therapist to form. Arguably one of the most important factors for therapy.
I entered these workshops with concern over my ability, or lack thereof (thanks shadow) and thoughts such as, ‘I can’t dance, am I too fat for leggings? I’m no good at art. I can’t play an instrument and what if I play out of tune?’ all allowed my self-judgement to creep in before I’d even started. It made me think of how our life experiences, including experience of trauma, contribute to the development and growth of the shadow and what this can mean in terms of our relationship to creativity, and in turn, therapy.
The art therapist began by sharing a quote from the Peter London book, ‘No more second-hand art’ and stated ‘Meaning, not beauty, is what we are after.’ This really resonated with my own sense of judgement and the pressure I place on myself to be ‘good enough.’ In relation to my clients, I noticed how important it is to allow their feelings to be present and how a non-judgemental and permissive approach found throughout the arts therapies can help to hold a client throughout the work.
So, how and why do we incorporate these other modalities in our work? Well, I realised through attending these workshops that, in one way or another that they all go hand in hand. Creativity is not limited. It isn’t about choosing and rigidly sticking to one form or the other. As creative therapists we have a set of tools which change and grow as we learn and understand and they can be adapted to our clients. We, as humans are not mind then body. We are one whole being, we feel as well as think. Our emotions live in us and not apart from us. Creativity is usually the first and the most natural, innate means of communication and if we can keep this in mind and continue to understand its importance, we can enable our clients to work with their emotion, their life experiences, their trauma and pave the way for understanding, permission and positive change.
mechanics sort and target crowd over
over 10 years notwithstanding pretty much
occurring in a similar area and
featuring similar characters considerably more
intriguing is that for certain special cases
you can tell that these games are made
by devotees of the books with enthusiasm for
the source material even the awful games
are disappointments as transformations or as
engaging games as opposed to a disappointment
to get what made the books and
film so uncommon to a huge number of individuals
all throughout the planet there's one issue of
course this series is enormous
to the extent interesting passages go forms of
each game that are appropriate applicants
for singular investigation instead of
simply ports of a similar game to another
stage there are 23 games just based
on the films delivered among 2001 and
2011 that is not including Harry Potter
Quidditch World Cup and its form for
Gameboy Advance the Lego Harry Potter
games their handheld forms magnificent
book of spells superb book of mixtures
Harry Potter for Kinect and in case we're
being truly liberal I surmise we could
consider Pottermore an electronic video
game - obviously we will not be taking a gander at
each variant of each game I'm not
totally insane just somewhat all things considered
I've picked one game for each film in addition to
Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup for a
all out of nine games which I believe is a
pleasant choice without getting carried away
so we should begin with the GameCube
rendition a Harry Potter and the
Scholar's Stone
[Music]
by making a film tie-in game there
are as a rule two unique
approaches to approach adjusting the film's
story
the first and most normal way is to
treat the story as window-dressing
introducing it in cutscenes mixed
with whatever interactivity the architects
need the subsequent choice is to make the
player feel like they're playing the
film reproducing activity scenes from the
film inside the levels and telling a
more precise adaptation of the film's
story the Harry Potter computer games
for the most part strike a trade off between
these two styles with fluctuating levels of
achievement on account of the GameCube
adaptation of Philosopher's Stone the way
it adjusts the story is the first of numerous
failings the manner in which the story is introduced
is unquestionably divided with pieces
missing implications made to occasions that
never happen and perilous presumptions
made about how much the crowd is
acquainted with the world and characters
this specific point is a cardinal sin
in my book even as somebody who is very
acquainted with the source material
skipping character improvement or appropriate
presentations since you know the
crowd realizes that characters is a
messy lethargic composing easy route it resembles
paying attention to a mainstream tune aside from the
just verses are those two lines from the
theme that everyone knows while it's
very enticing to tear separated the story
piece by piece this survey is going to
be long enough for what it's worth
so all things being equal I must zero in on a couple
explicit models the most clear this
is scene from the book where Harry and
Ron read about a break-in at the wizard
Bank
Gringotts the most basic place of
that scene is that the vault being
ransacked was the very one that Hagrid had
exhausted while getting Harry his spending
cash for school not exclusively Harry and
Hagrid never go to Gringotts in
the game yet Harry discusses the occasion
like he did there are other
head-scratching decisions that are less of
a debilitation to understanding the plot
like the choice to incorporate bothers
the phantom who was cut from the
film's as being superfluous than doing
literally nothing with him not even as
a supervisor battle generally while there are
some great
Aaron of decisions the variation neglects to
appropriately convert the tale of either the
book or film into a palatable
activity experience game Harry Potter and
the Philosopher's Stone figures out how to wreck
up even its straightforward show there
are some entirely perceptible framerate
issues with the game habitually tipping
under 30 casings each second notwithstanding
running locally at 60 I additionally took note
many obtrusively incomplete parts
of the game, for example, the trolls with the
incomplete surface as I brought up
prior or one particularly terrible cutscene
where Ron transports out of the room in
full perspective on the camera the dreadful bugs
inappropriate lighting terrible sound blending and
inferior quality surfaces makes the game look
inadequate
in any event, for a GameCube dispatch title let
alone a game from 2003 for reasons I
try not to have the opportunity to clarify here the
gamecube rendition of Philosopher's Stone
came out one year after the game based
on Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Privileged insights
as such the games share a comparative motor
however Philosopher's Stone was made by a
diverse designer and it shows the
base interactivity between the two is the
same Hogwarts is treated as a goliath
overworld where Harry learns new spells
what's more, classes that take after prisons from
The Legend of Zelda the game likewise permits
Harry to zoom around Hogwarts on the
Glow 2000 which is intriguing at
first yet becomes dreary once the
infertile Hogwarts scene destroys its
welcome it rapidly turns out to be certain that
the interactivity in Philosopher's Stone is
undeniably less cleaned projecting spells feels
inconvenient and a few spells, for example, to
Findo and wipe Fi should be charged
before utilize the game attempts to adjust the
Zelda style lock-on battle however the
camera never repays to zero in on the
adversary Harry is focusing on prompting numerous
circumstances who are Harry will be
blindingly terminating spells at an adversary the
player can't see the riddles in the
different prisons went from excessively simple to
unexpectedly troublesome because of terrible
plan I wound up
to utilize an aide for the last 50% of the
game in light of the fact that the level plan did an
outstandingly helpless occupation of directing the
player where to go
there are likewise covertness areas which
are frightfully planned with arbitrarily
producing monitors that make technique
silly I wound up blindingly running
past them over and over until the AI
chosen to act moronically obviously
when I got to the end supervisor battle
against Professor Quirrell
I was more alleviated than glad to see my
place who hands I regularly don't care for
being so obtuse in my audits yet the
GameCube rendition of Harry Potter and the
Logician's Stone is trash it looks
terrible it plays far more atrocious and is by one way or another
actually sub-par compared to the Chamber of
Privileged insights notwithstanding coming out one year
later there is no motivation to purchase this
game as the PlayStation and PC adaptations
while imperfect do an undeniably more affable work
of catching the wizardry of Hogwarts Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone gets
a 1 out of 5 and no love lost
so have you played Harry Potter and the
Rationalist's Stone and assuming this is the case what did
you consider it make certain to LIKE remark
also, buy in to my channel have your
feeling truly liberal
why not get me to my patreon page
go along with me next an ideal opportunity for another survey and
it gets you energized for that I have a
enchantment stunt ready for you I'm going to
make a bunny appear out of nowhere goodness hello
doing little mate pretty charming
The Marketing wins
8 substance advertising speedy successes that will help your business
For the unenlightened, content advertising speedy successes are not especially simple to stop by. It will in general be more about the long game, consistently sustaining a group of people while reproducing reliability and brand acknowledgment.
Tumblr media
All things considered, as each advertiser knows, now and again the tension builds from no place and you need a snappy success. You might be dispatching another item rapidly or reacting to a pattern. Or on the other hand perhaps you're simply beginning and need to make your essence felt.
Whichever way you may end up going after a snappy win from your substance advertising. That is fine. Simply recall – it's not an opportunity to toss your substance system out the window.
Try not to be enticed to feel that perhaps life can generally be this way – discarding the arranging and rather getting up each day and bringing a heap of leads as though by wizardry. Lamentably that is not actually the way content promoting, or life, works.
In the event that you've recently begun a substance showcasing procedure, be set up to confront a daunting struggle and swim through boggy waters for some time. It will take three to a half year or maybe more before you begin to see the advantage of your substance, especially if it's evergreen and SEO centered composition.
Frequently you'll normally encounter a substance showcasing speedy win toward the beginning of your methodology. Normally, the best thoughts are focused on first, and when that substance arrived on friendly you likely encountered some humble achievement.
Following a 24-hour cycle however, it will have dropped off a bluff and afterward the possibility of composing heaps of substance around long tail catchphrases, reliably creating drawing in video and connecting with your crowd each day begins to occur to on you.
At the point when you think back following a half year and begin to see the SEO advantage in your natural references I guarantee there will be a warm inclination. Yet, that can feel a way off.
So for when you do require a pick-me-upper – here's a couple of tips for a lift.
8 substance showcasing fast successes
#1 Blog more
Alright so this won't feel like a speedy win. In any case, I ensure that when most advertisers (or individuals answerable for the promoting) can't help thinking about why they aren't seeing any footing this is on the grounds that their last blog entry was over a fortnight prior.
Furthermore, therefore, they haven't posted anything of significant worth on LinkedIn for a fortnight. Or on the other hand Twitter or Facebook or Instagram or whichever social stage bodes well for your business. That is the point at which they begin to look for content advertising fast successes.
Submit more to your substance schedule or creation plan. In case you're an independent company, it's elusive the time. However, until you ensure you're delivering content that is focused at the crowd you need to reach on a reliable premise, you're not going to accomplish a lot of beside having a couple of blog entries a few recordings to look good.
So return to the planning phase and conceptualize what content you will create over a three to half year time frame and focus on it. I appreciate this won't feel like a speedy win. In any case, in any event, delivering content for seven days you'll begin to see gains. Take it from that point.
I'm not going to go over the way toward conceptualizing content presently, however do the trick to say it relies upon what your objectives are and what area you are working in. In the event that you as of now have a procedure set up that includes focusing on long tail catchphrases with composed substance, focus on the substance that you think will biggestly affect social.
#2 Harness the UGC directly before you
What could be a speedier substance showcasing snappy win than having individuals make content for you. For nothing.
We're encircled by client produced content we scarcely contact yet each one of those surveys, web-based media posts and pictures you've been sent have esteem. Repackage them on your site into a page of tributes – individuals are significantly less prone to purchase with no audits to investigate, so present them in a simple to discover place.
On the off chance that you have an after on Instagram repacking ongoing posts others have made about your image (especially in case you're B2C). Screen capture their posts and gather them into a story for a simple piece of commitment.
#3 Give something away free of charge
Presumably the substance advertising speedy win that accompanies the greatest assurance of accomplishment – everyone prefers free stuff. Particularly in the event that it accompanies worth and its helpful.
Tumblr media
Part with your insight
The most well-known technique is that you compose, record or film something helpful for your intended interest group. Viably you're parting with your insight. This will most likely be in your procedure in any case since it's a major piece of everyone's substance advertising ethos.
All things considered, you're most likely keeping something down. Something you're covertly trusting individuals will come and purchase from you that you're prodding them with. Consider parting with it – or possibly think about a way you could possibly.
For instance, you work in a B2B climate and you're a specialist in law. You've recently gone through years assembling your GDPR information and you view yourself as a specialist.
You've been contributing to a blog for quite a long time about the GDPR entanglements and cautioning signs. Presently it's an ideal opportunity to guide your LinkedIn crowd precisely about it, or if nothing else a component of it. Try not to be reluctant to give something free of charge. Individuals will in any case purchase from you.
Run an opposition
On the off chance that your business is more item than administration orientated, you may need to move into rivalry region to scrounge up interest rapidly.
Think cautiously however – however the automatic response may be to just part with your item, does that truly serve your advantage best? How does that find as you would prefer to new crowds?
All things being equal, search for organizations that share the sort of crowd you pine for yet you don't normally rival. Would you be able to collaborate and give something for them to part with as a trade off for the equivalent?
That way you're running a similar rivalry yet viably with twice the crowd. Utilize these connections for your potential benefit and ensure they backlink to your site.
#4 Use the information readily available
Take a gander at the information you hang on your area or your clients. Does it recount a story? On the off chance that you don't hold that sort of information – would you be able to go out and get it? What worth may it hold in PR?
This probably won't be the best model given the size of the association being referred to yet it shows the point. A report by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association found that individuals basically were not setting aside sufficient cash for retirement any longer. Looking back it's news esteem is clear and a decent PR will have presumably guided the report toward that path. Yet, it shows the worth that the PLSA (an exchange body) has on it's individuals – and it's offered an incentive to those individuals by catapulting the issue into the public press.
What number of more individuals will currently move a stage along the way to improving benefits, or focusing on saving more because of the inclusion?
#5 Identify the holes in the purchaser venture
This substance showcasing fast win can be deciphered severally. First glance at your substance yield. What is it focused on? Is there a phase in the purchasing venture that you haven't recognized or focused on yet?
For instance – you sell running coaches. A great deal of your substance is pointed toward getting individuals to redesign their mentors. What about "How to recognize when your mentors don't fit any more?".
Or then again, "how to know whether your mentors are giving you a physical issue". Or then again perhaps you ought to focus on a phase later in the cycle – "The most well known shading coaches the stars will be wearing in 2019".
Presently, this is as yet focused on SEO – however the advantages of doing this routinely can't be overlooked. In case you're criminological about it, you'll distinguish a purchasing venture opening that will presumably be a hit with your crowd on friendly.
#6 Upgrade your substance
Inside, you should take a gander at your site's client experience. Where would you be able to embed substance to make the excursion more joyful? Use Google Analytics to recognize your leave pages. For amateurs, that is here:
Where are your most elevated leave pages? What would you be able to do on those leave pages to stop individuals leaving? Is the substance too slender on those pages? Does it need more substance to persuade individuals regarding your item's quality? Similarly, which greeting pages are failing to meet expectations? How might you make more crowd on these pages to pull in more crowd? What substance would you be able to make that connects to those pages?
In case you're utilizing WordPress there's a convenient module called Yoast which will naturally stack in your page and post pages in WordPress, and give you bit by bit directions on improving the SEO of those pages.
Here and there the exhortation will be 'compose more substance' – which may be actually what you need to hear. Why bother doing all that rich substance advertising if when individuals come to purchase from you they discover your site ailing in data and mastery?
From a specialized angle (moving into unadulterated SEO now) it could merit utilizing a crawler program like Screaming Frog, which will investigate everywhere of your site searching for SEO issues and encourage you on the most proficient method to battle them.
#7 Combine your substance
In the event that you have slender substance on your webpage (let's be honest, those 500-word sites you took out in 2014 aren't glancing so beautiful in your investigation currently are they?) at that point it very well may be an ideal opportunity to get freed or consolidate it.
Believe it or not – erasing ineffectively performing substance will frequently help your Google game. In the event that Google spots flimsy substance on your site it's probably going to downsize your site in search.
Nonetheless, those 300 magnificently made words need not go to squander. Does it fit with another theme you've covered or supplement something different you've expounded on? Do you have a few pieces that look somewhat light
Both of these organizations are online destinations that you can make shopping and discover things like gadgets, design, expressions, and so forth.
Tumblr media
Flipkart Internet shopping additionally has its impediments. To start with, misrepresentation and security concerns. Given the absence of capacity to review the product before buy, buyers are at higher danger of extortion with respect to the dealer than in a physical store. Traders additionally hazard fake buys utilizing taken Mastercards or deceitful renouncement of the online buy. With a stockroom rather than a retail customer-facing facade, shippers face less danger from physical robbery. Security is another disservice of internet shopping. The security of individual data is a huge issue for certain shoppers. Numerous buyers wish to dodge spam and selling which could come about because of providing contact data to an online vendor.
You can discover coupons and vouchers for surely understand brands, for example, Flipkart, Jabong, Myntra, Fashion and you, Amazon, and some more. A portion of their markdown offers is as high as 60% creating is extraordinary compared to other arrangement objections in the domains of web-based shopping. Besides, they additionally give certain coupons and arrangements that are solely accessible just on the Flipkart site.
With bubbly, wedding, and birthday season going all out, settle on shrewd online arrangements and deal accessible at Flipkart.com and appreciate the endowment of giving.
At long last the cost and determination. One bit of leeway of shopping on the web is having the option to rapidly search out arrangements for things or administrations with various merchants. Delivery costs (if relevant) decrease the value bit of leeway of online products.
For a very long time, I have opposed the allurement of Flilpkart.com online retail shopping. I don't have a clue why yet I had my {weird} explanations behind opposing it. The Myth of the Perfect Family
Flipping with a cooking publication just recently, I quit to check out a short article about cook Nancy Richer's Christmastime dishes and practices. Yearly, Nancy and also her husband host their two lots or two children and also grandchildren in their upstate New york city farmhouse, and the household 'invests nearly every second with each other,' according to the article-taking sleigh trips, playing hockey in the barn, having rest parties as well as a huge vacation supper. 'When I take a look around the table at everybody, it almost makes me cry,' Nancy is priced quote as saying.
Part of me scoffs at this picture-perfect picture, however an additional part of me wants for it. Articles similar to this, TELEVISION shows like Parent, and also films like Dan in Reality play on our deeply rooted needs for belonging as well as for the long-lasting safety of a synergistic tribe. They're idyllic depictions of caring extensive families whose members might not constantly agree on everything yet always discover their way back to each other after a problem, and also have each other's back regardless of what. It's no wonder we're drawn towards these circumstances, in a time when Americans invest approximately only 18 hrs per month-less than a hr a day-with family members members.
It's frequently around the holidays when we feel the pull of exactly what we're missing, or visualize we're missing. In a research study of adults estranged from their moms and dads or brother or sisters, 90 percent reported finding the holiday challenging. And also it feels like a natural following action at fault ourselves for the absence of sleigh trips and also slumber parties-but we don't should go there. Leo Tolstoy's well-known declaration that 'pleased households are alike' was patently incorrect, they could look a million various ways.
' My household was simply my mama, father, and me,' states yoga educator Cyndi Lee, creator of OM Yoga exercise and also yoga exercise instructor trainings. 'We got on truly well, and mostly I bear in mind a whole lot of laughing. We didn't make a big deal regarding 'family members'- we simply naturally did a great deal of things together because my moms and dads shared their interests with me. The extended household really did not live near us, so possibly that's one reason we were such a close device.'
By comparison, Shari Cavalier, my all-time favored vinyasa instructor, expanded up in a close household of six youngsters and states they all proceed to have a deep link with each other, despite navigating some bumps along the way.
' Now that I am nearing 53, I see our differences a lot more plainly,' she claims. 'When I was in my 30s, this bothered me a lot. I yearned for everybody to count on the very same traits, be enthusiastic about the very same things, etc. It had not been up until my mid-40s that I started to accept them for who they are, to understand that I couldn't change them and they could not alter me. There were some quite big blowups at family gatherings around points like faith, national politics, money, elevating children. We had to discover how to consent to differ.'
So just how do we practice allowing go of the fantasy as well as accepting exactly what's truly in front of us? Right here are a couple of ideas for bringing more happiness and also empathy to our incomplete reality.
Remember, it's not personal. The psychological imprints of the generations before us notify that our moms and dads are, that we are, and also that our brother or sisters are, claims Mark Wolynn, supervisor of the Family members Constellation Institute and also writer of It Didn't Beginning with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes That We Are And also Just how To Finish The Cycle. 'Each brother or sister brings a different piece of the family members system and also is drawn by a different force, even with comparable parenting,' Wolynn states. 'The injuries of generations prior enter into our unconscious inheritance.' Instead of taking your mom's quibbling personally, think about just how her mommy's perfectionism affected her. Might your sibling's propensity for recommending you on ways to manage your finances originate from his deep-rooted desire for stability since your parents' divorce? Might your sister's snottiness about your spouse be covering her instability concerning not being in a long-term connection? Once we comprehend our relative a little better, we could stop obtaining triggered as well as attune to empathy instead.
Practice loving-kindness meditation, additionally referred to as 'genuine kindness.' 'This is an extraordinary practice to contact when you remain in the middle of household challenges,' Lee says. 'This technique means that you pertain to everybody as a buddy, regardless of what. Have a go at to see that individual as themselves, with all their fears as well as joys as well as sadness and also benefits. You see them as they are, excrescences as well as all, and also you start to see the reality of truth, which is that we are all connectioned.' She additionally advises exercising 'mindfulness meditation right away'- noticing and allowing go of judgmental ideas or feelings of inconvenience as they arise, via stopping and also bringing attention to the breath. 'This takes around 2 seconds, however it can create a gap between stimulations as well as feedback as well as, in that space, there is a tremendous possibility for you making favorable options regarding your speech and also activity,' she says.
Take time alone to rebalance. When she's with her extended family members for greater than a day or 2, Cavalier stays focused by discovering a silent place in your house to unroll her yoga floor covering, or taking an introspective run or walk. 'I sneak away for an hour approximately when things are reaching be too much for me,' she says. 'Generally, no one knows where I am as well as that I practice there. It is my little oasis.' She might practice a mantra-inhaling on 'peace' as well as exhaling on 'love,' or breathing in on 'let' and breathing out on 'go.' Among her preferred pranayama practices for generating the relaxation response is merely inhaling for a matter of four and also breathing out for a count of seven.
Receive what there is to receive. Not everyone has the ability to share love in a perfect means, however that does not mean they do not feel it. Learning how to accept and bask in the love that member of the family have the ability to give-rather than what you desire they would certainly give-is a substantial step towards recovery incomplete partnerships. 'If your moms and dads resemble a tap whose love only flows at 2 percent, can you place your cup under that tap as well as load it up One Hundred Percent?' Wolynn asks. 'If your mom's only method of loving you is to purchase you presents, take the presents. If it's cooking blintzes, delight in the blintzes.'
Fast and Furiosa: Analysing and Comparing the Action in the Fast & Furious
Tumblr media
If you had read my review of the Fate of the Furious, you will realise the minimal attention given to its action set pieces. That’s not because there weren’t any; there were a plethora of action sequences, but because of just how unspectacular it all was. From the choreography to the stakes involved – action scenes were forced, illogical and lacking in direction that makes a scene engaging. It got me thinking about how severely this long-running franchise has fallen from grace. It could really learn a lesson or two from action movies that have mastered vehicle combat and car chases. Do be informed there will inevitably be some major spoilers ahead!
Geography
Filmmaking is an art, and action scenes are no exception. In fact, vehicular action sequences may just be its most demanding form. As with any action scene, it requires the camera to capture impact, heft, velocity and all that’s technical. Most challengingly, there is constant moment across long distances. These are a lot of complicated elements to be conveyed on-screen. It is important for filmmakers to communicate clearly so that viewers can quickly process the information being delivered.
Tumblr media
George Miller’s masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road taught us that when it comes to large-scale vehicular warfare, viewers need an awareness of the geography of the battlefield. The film takes time with its birds-eye view sweeping shots, to survey the landscape and highlight to its viewers where each faction is in relation to each other. This greatly aids our understanding of any situation within the set piece, as we know exactly what is happening in any time and space. We are able to anticipate and never become confused by the complex movement and developments in the action never seem like an afterthought.
It’s worth realising that this much attention to layout is paid to a one-dimensional battlefield – an empty desert. In comparison, we have a key action set piece in the Fate of the Furious that takes place in Manhattan, a location far more complex due to its verticality and infrastructure. There is so much more to process. Perhaps the usage of drones like Mad Max: Fury Road may not be feasible, but this is where the studio’s obsession with CGI would come in really useful. As the action unfolds with Dom ripping through the streets, we have no clue where his objectives are, nor the position of those stopping him. This crucially reduces any suspense as we couldn’t even guess if the target was near. Our lack of awareness of the surrounding detracts from the film’s credibility as well, as Dom’s methods of evasion reveal themselves as conveniences rather than moments of surprising instinct. Such is his prompt decision to drive through a glass corner store upon the arrival of the team he betrayed. We had no idea it was there; it was as if it magically materialised for his emergency escape.
Tumblr media
In many ways, the final chase in the Fate of the Furious along the frozen lake borrows heavily from Mad Max: Fury Road. Change in temperate, but it shares a similar vastness for vehicular warfare. Here, the geography established with surveying shots across the ice is undermined by the ill-disciplined logic of the film. It’s a lack of logic that defeats the purpose of establishing geography. Cars trailing far behind amazingly catch up to join the chase. Distances are neglected, as the “10 kilometers” of ice towards the gate seem to run for an eternity, much like the ridiculous runway in Fast 6. There was no excuse for that. It’s important to pair action with some sort of consistency in order to allow audiences to understand the stakes – like the threat of the aircraft taking off any moment now. This gives urgency and a reason to take any action scene seriously.
Seriousness
All that talk about absurdity brings us to the point that the franchise needs to inject some seriousness.We are not talking about realism. It’s completely fine that our protagonists always come out alive after pulling off the unthinkable, but their lack of concern gives us little reason to be. It takes away the intensity from each scene.
Tumblr media
This has been the case since the sticky introduction of Hobbs, the unbreakable Rock. In Fast 6, he tells his partner nonchalantly to take the wheel, only to leap off great heights in an attempt to land on another vehicle – unharmed.  Ironically, we soon frown with cynicism when Fast 7 sees Hobbs injured and hospitalised for the majority of the film, only to cause us to completely question the meaning of all this when he decides to bring in the “calvary” and flex off his cast. The lack of fear introduces him as an utter badass to begin with, but when the hype settles, takes away our need to worry about our protagonists.
A suitable comparison is another ridiculous car chase where impossible things happen. The Moscow car chase in the Bourne Supremacy remains the favourite car chase of all time because of its staggering level of detail, and the amount of genuine emotions expressed by the similarly unstoppable agent. He’s done plenty of badass things, but this scene is so intense because he gives us no reason to take survival for granted.
Tumblr media
While cars in Fast would simply turn the wheel to execute complicated actions making it seem easy, the cinematography in Supremacy goes to great lengths to capture the difficulty in any equally impossible manoeuvre. The Moscow chase’s most intricate – and crazy – stunt is the finishing T-bone against a road divider in the tunnel. It is an elaborate sequence packed with skilful techniques and moments of genius. This involves Bourne’s taxi and the asset’s off-roader trading paint (gotta loveBurnout) upon entry, followed by a nudge from the asset that brings Bourne’s car sliding perpendicular to the flow of traffic. The editing is lightning quick, and the camera is hysterical, but the filmmakers communicate Bourne’s decisive actions so clearly – changing gears, turning the wheel, firing at the asset’s wheels – all to cause his own taxi to spin, niftily positioning the asset’s vehicle in the T-bone, only to slam it against an approaching divider. It’s a masterful sequence with a supreme level of detail and vision. An eye for detail – not skimming over action procedures – goes a long way to let viewers know that the film doesn’t dish out the ridiculous casually. It earns its outrageous outcome by creating a logical process by which it could be possible.
Tumblr media
It isn’t just detail that lends credibility to the absurd; as countless vehicles slam violently into Bourne, the film bothers to capture genuine fear and panic. He doesn’t purse his lips and flex his muscles as if to absorb the impact, instead he is gritting and frantically spinning the wheel to reposition the car because his life depends on it. He is clearly nervous and unsure. The camera frequently observes his eye movement, he’s not taking his options for granted but constantly identifying outlets to evade the persistent asset, whom he never underestimates. Bourne lends drama and believability in terms of character to an implausible action set piece. So much so that we invest in it and desperately yearn for his success. It is the reason why the Bourne films are able to frequently deliver ludicrous action sequences while we buy into it and ask for more.
Progressive Storytelling
Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a massive submarine storming down a frozen lake in pursuit of our heroes? It didn’t have to happen, but it did. Much of the action in Fast and Furious seems for the sake of spectacle. It’s a treat for viewers, but becoming a trend over the past few films has inculcated a taste for excess and exaggeration that is manifested from its action to its plot. Gratuitous as set pieces can be, it’s important that this time is used productively in a way that informs the plot, otherwise it disrupts the flow of the story with scenes completely irrelevant.
Tumblr media
Plot progression amidst action is essential in Mad Max: Fury Road. Any prolonged action sequence runs the risk of disengagement, even more so if your film is basically a 2-hour long chase. In spite of the chaos, Fury Road masterfully builds the narrative through visual cues and informative dialogue. As Max and Furiosa battle through the canyon, there is constant development in their relationship, as these two damaged individuals with trust issues depend on each other’s ability and sincerity to survive the punishing pursuit. They’re constantly engaged in action, but plot-wise, every action furthers the plot; we see the two exchanging tools, modifying each other’s weapons on the go, and literally providing support (Max lends her his shoulder to stabilise her killer snipe). Action and character development go hand in hand. Plot advances.
Plot takes a pause whenever action breaks in the Fast and the Furious. Those who were family before the action remain as family afterwards – there is no development injected into these scenes that value-add to our knowledge of any character. They morph into unbreakable punching bags for action to unfold upon. There is little to surprise us, based on what we already know about the characters. Tej is nerding out, Roman is whining, Dom is being a badass and is gonna jump out of the car soon to save someone in mid-air and the Rock is unbeatable. In the end, everyone celebrates. They do what they are expected of them, and little else. For most of the action, you can literally switch channels and return once it ends. You wouldn’t have missed out any crucial plot points.
Convoluted Stakes
Finally, factors that motivate and drive the action are just as important as its execution. Audiences need to be invested in whatever characters are fighting for – to root for them. This way, there is more at stake; scenes will become that much more interesting.
Tumblr media
Let’s shake things up, we are gonna compare the stakes of the Fate of the Furious with one of its own, the fantastic Fast Five. Fast Five is proof that with effort and a real incentive to innovate, the Fast franchise has actually got what it takes to do brilliant work. Fast Five finds our crew in a desperate place. The crimes of the past are catching up and they need a fresh start – the clichéd clean slate. They decide to steal from a big drug lord – not the most moral thing to do – but nevertheless the deep connection we feel for these characters who want a fresh start to do good makes us root for them (who would’ve known it kick-started their career as driving superheroes).
As for the Fate of the Furious, the whole betrayal gimmick is problematic from the start. Having preached the value of family since the get go, it seems pretty amazing that the claim of a child would send Dom rogue. Not just rogue, but he displays a clear willingness to put his real family’s lives in danger. Characters in the film may be immune to collisions, but we are pretty sure flipping cars (Letty’s car!) onto each other runs the risk of severe injury.
Tumblr media
Simply put, Dom was willing to kill Letty for Elsa and his child. Its entire premise spits on the face of the family, and provides no foundation that should drive the action. Therefore the action builds with little at stake, while we become increasingly infuriated at Dom’s moral laxity and question his loyalty to his family. Personally, we didn’t care if he made it anymore.
So there we have it: these are our issues with the factors that drive the action in the recent Fast and Furious films. We are car-nerds ourselves and are all for car chases – often our favourite action scene in films. It’s upsetting to know that the world’s go-to franchise for thrilling car chases is producing action that’s substandard.
The Things Movie Web Geeks Don't Want You To Know
At the point when I originally began composition for news sources four years prior, I never knew how incredible the assessments of film fans truly were. I was dumbfounded to discover that studios fly journalists out for nothing to talk with superstars on set visits. I was much increasingly flabbergasted about 'Free drinks' film industry occasions, yet the greatest thing that astonished me was that web nerds have fans. At the point when I opened my first fan mail 4 years prior, I realized that putting my composing on the web would have been fun, testing, and an incredible chance to fabricate my resume. It was additionally something I needed to exceed expectations at. In the wake of composing for a couple of years, I before long found the little-known techniques. Perusers of well known news sources find a workable pace positive things journalists find a workable pace. We make companions, we find a good pace, we love to engage you in the most ideal manner we know conceivable. Be that as it may, we are human and none of us are perfect....especially film web nerds. We as a whole generally share similar imperfections and abnormal eccentricities that we don't care to concede, and you will as a rule discover us rationalizing them on the off chance that they're brought up to us. So here are a few things that you may jump at the chance to think about us that we might all want to take to the grave.
1. WE GET STARSTRUCK
Numerous individuals assume that online film columnists are extremely proficient and never lose their cool while talking with somebody known in media outlets, yet most occasions we put our game faces on for interviews. A ton of us that compose are only simply humble film nerds that have been allowed to compose for a film site. Odds are during a meeting, the primary idea in web nerds heads is thinking about whether and how they can unresponsively request an image with the entertainer/on-screen character a while later. As a matter of fact, from individual experience I have seen that web essayists don't typically get apprehensive over the A-rundown entertainers. It's the faction/B-list entertainers that truly find a workable pace. Truly, I have met a couple of notable on-screen characters, however when I met Greg Nicotero at a show, I got so bothered and humiliated https://gomovies-online.vip/latest . WE ARE PRESS WHORES
Truly, we do like seeing our names on famous web crawlers. In any case, there are 3 things we as a whole fantasy about observing our names on: Movie Posters, t.v. spots, and DVD fronts. We will do anything just to get an ad spot that will in the long run control individuals into seeing the film. We may over adorn audits for the expectation that it will be taken a gander at. (We as a whole know there are essayists out there that will even level out lie about frightful motion pictures just to get a decent ad spot.) We likewise know the correct expressions that will make for a decent ad spot. We realize that motion pictures like being contrasted with other well known motion pictures. (For instance on the off chance that you find in an audit, "It's (FILL IN THE BLANK film) meets (FILL IN THE BLANK film)!" it's a pre reflected ad spot.) Yup, we may deny it, however we have all done this some time.
3. WE ARE TERRITORIAL
A great deal of us now and then overlook that we are extremely common right now, this is obvious when you perceive how regional a few of us can get. It couldn't be any more obvious, the vast majority of us are simply just in-your-face film fans with a stunning mental ability to store unlimited measures of trifling film information who like to think we are "film elitists." This generally turns out when authors from various locales meet up for occasions or celebrations. Obviously, we for the most part invest the majority of the energy sharing our perspectives on the most recent film news. In any case, get a lot of film web geeks together long enough, and the discussion will undoubtedly transform into a clash of the brains. (Or on the other hand "Who's the greatest virgin?" is the thing that I like to call it.) The once agreeable babble transforms into a horrendous discussion over darken motion pictures and eventually, somebody generally winds up ridiculing a kindred author for not adoring a little known faction on-screen character who truly is only a glamorized extra with sickening dread movies. Since I am a lady, I am generally tested on my film information each screening or occasion I go to.
4. WE LOVE THE COMMENT SECTION
As much as some of you are dependent on composing remarks, we are significantly progressively dependent on understanding them. After specific articles/publications, we will utilize RSS channels and continually revive the website page, just to check whether there is anything new. Truly, I have been in dates or make out meetings and continually pondering what individuals are composing on the site. It doesn't make a difference if the criticism is fortunate or unfortunate, we simply need to see the quantity of remarks go up!! It is a fanatical urgent propensity lion's share of us have.
5. WE ARE INSANELY COMPETITIVE!
At the point when you compose for well known news sources, you warm up to different essayists from various sites when you spread similar occasions, celebrations and set visits. Typically you possibly find a workable pace individuals when you are working, so it's extremely fun when you do see them. Be that as it may, nobody likes to concede this, however when we are covering similar occasions, we are EXTREMELY serious with each other. It turns out to be even more a race than an occupation truly. It's everything about who can get more photograph operations, meetings, special features, and better inclusion! We may have a great time at the after gatherings and love finding each other, yet trust me, when we're not around different scholars, we will race to our inns to transfer recordings and pictures, and compose our articles in the expectations that our pieces are the FIRST thing you find in the Google web crawler (a.k.a. all sites' closest companion) for whatever occasion we are covering.
6. WE DO CARE WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT US
In all honesty, your assessments truly do make a difference to us. (That is correct, we are on the whole like Mark Wahlberg from 'The Big Hit') Your messages or remarks can either represent the deciding moment our day. Without a doubt, a few of us start debate in our articles, yet we would like to be preferred. (Regardless of whether we leave approach to make that almost inconceivable. :P) For each ten individuals who read our articles, we realize that there is continually going to be in any event one individual who doesn't care for or down right HATES what we need to state. Once in a while the negative messages or remarks are so totally nonsensical and over the top, it's difficult to be annoyed by them. (As a matter of fact for those ones we print out for our companions to giggle at)
Be that as it may, despite the fact that we have assembled a tough skin, there are some negative comments that do get under it. Now and then they will set us feeling sharp throughout the day. ( After all,no one loves being known as a douche for preferring a specific film!) However, the positive input is the thing that drives us to continue composing. It puts a grin on our countenances to realize that we put a grin on yours. (As silly as that sounds!)
