tl;dr root a is dumb and stupid and i don’t like it
Tumblr media
gee whickers @just-another-tokyo-ghoul-fan i’m glad you asked!! my hater self’s gonna jump out now and i apologize in advance. under the cut:
Root A is a textbook definition of wasted potential, and I’m not just talking about the animation! It also is a detriment to its own story!
I remember when they announced Root A (flashes my “old guy” card) and the staff said it was gonna be “anime original.” GASP, a reason to watch the anime besides so-so animated versions of iconic TG fights? Sign me up!
The first episode was honestly pretty alright! The last few minutes, where Kaneki says “I’m going to Aogiri lmao”, is really cool! Soundtrack? Banger! Yutaka Yamada hitting it out of the park as usual (his work on Vinland Saga is particularly immaculate. Highly recommend both the soundtrack and the anime itself. Very nice!).
Cut to the Cochlea raid. Which, in Root A, happens after the 11th ward raid. Instead of simultaneously. WHAT. The writers literally made Aogiri dumber just so that Kaneki could get a ripoff Shachi fight. Eto showing up in her kakuja was kinda cool, but I digress.
Basically, Root A refuses to engage with the raw potential of Kaneki joining Aogiri to kill the One-Eyed King. It fundamentally changes the tragedy aspect of Tokyo Ghoul in the manga, because Kaneki is now surrounded by actual functioning members of Aogiri and not psychopaths like Yamori or even his own twisted version of Aogiri in his head.
See, an actual “Kaneki joins Aogiri” story would inevitably have to address the disparity between the real Aogiri Tree and Yamori’s torturous tendencies that Kaneki projects onto the organization as a whole. Ayato is there. Miza, Yumitsu, Eto, Tatara-- they are all there and are fighting for “a world for ghouls.” It would have to flip Kaneki’s mindset on its head because what he’s fighting for is actively detrimental to his own mental health and also doesn’t even help Anteiku; Aogiri only attacked the 20th ward in the first place to find Rize, a Washuu that could bypass CCG RC scanners. A second insider agent besides Arima (Eto being Takatsuki strikes her off the list), who could come and go without raising a single alarm (remember that false positives happen all the time because of the Washuu and the Garden kids and aren’t questioned).
The reason Tokyo Ghoul the manga doesn’t have Kaneki join Aogiri is because it is a tragedy; the whole point is that he is fighting a pointless battle that he constructed in his head. It’s why Touka calls him out when they finally talk. It’s why Aogiri doesn’t attack Anteiku again. It’s the perfect set-up for his tragic flaw that catches up to him in the end. If he did join Aogiri, that whole mental battle has to get upended because Aogiri’s ultimate goal is actually beneficial to the ghouls of Anteiku. Everyone else is just too blinded by the targeted violence to realize that.
God, I might actually just write this myself out of spite.

2YOU Magazine Interview
In this interview, Koki talks about his music, his background, and his fans, which gave me new respect and appreciation of what he experienced and what he is doing. I really would like more people to read this interview!!
Original interview in Japanese http://2youmagazine.com/2020/11/koki-3/
(Sorry for the bad translation as I am native in neither English or Japanese. But I just really want to share this with his fans.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Koki Tanaka has released the single as "KOKI" and "JOKER." Koki Tanaka, since the breakup of the band, solo activity, and now completely self-produced/self-promoted. He has continued to voice. Even now with covid-19 and live activities have been limited, he uses youtube as a tool to voice. He has become the person to help us to remember that it is normal to laugh, to set us free, and to allow us to get back to normal. Koki has been putting the release aside but now finally he made a new self split EP with "2U" by KOKI and "Oh yeah~chapter3~" by JOKER. He said that this time is for him to help those who helped him. Let's see the Koki that bears his past and unleashes the new self.
2YOU: All the artists have their activities been limited because of covid-19. However, it seems like you still have a lot of activities to make fans happy. KOKI: Japan has been pretty brutal about it, isn't it? When I open SNS, there is always this tension which I hate. Of course, I also got messages like "you have to tell people to stay home!" So I started to think about what I can do at home and that's why I started things like youtube or thinking that I have to do something and wrote songs. Corona is a natural disaster so it is not like I can release my anger to a person. So it is better to think of something that will make people happy. That is the reason I continue to shoot youtube videos.
2YOU: You also had quite a few shows canceled, rights?
KOKI: About 20 of them. Actually, I didn't think it is that big of a deal around March. However, little by little as we got more information and shows have been canceled. I started to realize I might not be able to sing anymore. Although it is an abstract feeling, it is very scary.
2YOU: Singing is everything to you. It is difficult to think that would be forbidden, right? KOKI: Yeah! Actually, because of Corona, there are bands broke up or members are separated. It is very scary that the things we think are normal are disappearing. 2YOU: For those dying live house or band friends, you have been very active in helping them.
KOKI: When I was troubled, they were the one who saved me. So when they become the ones that need to be saved, of course I need to do whatever it takes to help them. If I don't do something now, I will regret it for the rest of my life. Now is the only time to give back. When thinking about giving back, it is difficult to find the right timing, right? So I believe this time is the perfect timing for me to give back.
2YOU: Because of Corona, it is difficult to laugh anymore. But watching Koki's stuff does make us burst out laughing. For example, I was laughing hard at the "Anybody can do home training" youtube video. When I saw you said, "after all, I guess no one can do it..." I was thinking "wow. I really laughed out loud at this."
KOKI: Well, I guess making people laugh is the goal or part of the goal. In a good way, I want people to think Corona is not a big deal. Of course we really need to be careful and do the right thing. However, Corona shouldn't be everything. I am also doing my things as usual and fighting as usual. If people see me, the person who starts from zero, are able to laugh at me, beef with me, and if all those turn into laughter, it would be the best thing.
2YOU: The beef between you and sports newspaper is the best!
KOKI: You mean Tokyo Sports Newspaper, right? LOL. Those kinds of gossip newspapers always like to write random stuff, don’t they? Sometimes I read and think "what? you call this news?" I also have been the target many times. Instead of being angry and challenging them "this is NOT true, you bastard!" it is my job as an entertainer to transform this into a joke.
2YOU: Oooh. Like the Hip of Hip-Hop?
KOKI: Exactly. Basically battling where everyone can see. I was thinking if I can do that with Tokyo Sport, that would be fun. You can say this is Hip-Hop or even ROCK. When I experience that kind of culture, I am like a child and get super excited. You know like the beef between ZEEBRA and KJ. That is exactly what Tokyo Sport and me....I guess? LOL.
2YOU: I guess Hip-Hop and ROCK have been a big impact on shaping who you are. What is your music root?
KOKI: Completely Hip-Hop! I totally fell for it when I first heard 人間発電所 by BUDDHA BRAND when I was in 7th grade. At the time I thought people who sing rap in a rock band are pretty frivolous, but later when I start to listen to Yamaraashi, UZMK, RIZE, DRAGON ASH, I was totally into it. Of course iconic artists/bands like Slipknot, NIRVANA and hide had a big impact on me as well.
2YOU: And you showed that in your music even at the time, didn't you?
KOKI: Yeah, I wanted to. I was very active in the pop culture world at the time. There were a lot of people who listened to my music, women, people who just happened to hear it somewhere...etc. I was thinking it must be so cool to sing the rap to them. Actually recently when I was talking to JYU from UZMK and NOBUYA from ROTTENGRAFFTY, they told me that they felt that influence in my music at the time. So I did send a clear message. My policy at that time was being an idol and doing not idol-alike things. If people like it, I succeed. 2YOU: Was that why you became bald? Haha. KOKI: That was the way I showed antithesis. I was being scolded because I shaved my head though. LOL. But my male fans also increased because I became bald. So in that way it was a very successful move. LOL
2YOU: This time you included a song as JOKER called "Oh year~chapter3~" KOKI: I was in a band then I was doing solo. Starting this year, I left the agency and am completely doing things on my own. I started to think that I really had thrown away what I have built, my idol past. I wanted to show "I am a band man" so I didn't want people to connect me with idol. Now I wanted to continue the series that I have been working on since the idol period. I want to carry it and fight the world as a band man. So I released this as JOKER. Plus the song 2U which I released as KOKI. This is a song that shows what I have been doing (powerful band music) with mainly rap. There is a lyric I wrote "mazugomi(a wordplay of masukomi. masukomi in Japanese is mass media. mazui means bad. gomi means trash. So I think KOKI wanted to show that the mass media is like trash here." Because of Corona, we can see clearly what is good and what is bad. There is information in the mass media that really saves people's lives. There is also information like trash just being played.
2YOU: So you wrote the lyrics "do not think they are partners in crime."
KOKI: Exactly. 2YOU MAGAZINE has helped me so much and I wanted to be the media to help others. I wanted to be the media helping people who are tracing the dream, people who are working hard, people who are supporting those people. That is why I decided to name this song from 2YOU(magazine) to 2U. Even we are called "media" but do not think we are the same as other media. That is why I wrote those lyrics.
2YOU: This lyric is from hide's DOUBT, right?
KOKI: Ahahahaah. Yes, you got it! I was thinking I definitely need to put hide's lyrics when I work with 2YOU.
2YOU: Your "F.O.M.O." has ROCKET DIVE's lyric in it. This HIP-HOP kind of playfulness makes people chuckle.
KOKI: You mean the lyric "Sail away" from F.O.M.O. right? LOL. I enjoy when I applied my root and people actually discover it. It makes me happy. I would like both the music element and the entertainment element in my work.
2YOU: Your single "Oh year~chapter3~" also has a strong color. This series is always erotic. LOL
KOKI: SUPER erotic. LOL. The past songs in the series were also like that. I even had this performance that I put a bed on the stage and danced with a female dancer. However, I got complaints from the parent-child seat. LOL.
2YOU: Ahahahaaha. I wouldn't say it is good for their education. LOL.
KOKI: Yeah. There were like, "this is not something for the children." Haha. However, this is also something I have always challenged myself to do since the idol period. So I wanted to carry my past and complete this song which became "Oh year~chapter3~."
2YOU: For the fans who have been supporting from that time, it must be really nice present for them.
KOKI: There are people who became my fans when I started band. There are also people who became my fans recently. However, the ones who really support me through all the ups and downs are the fans from idol period. To be honest, there are so many chances for them to give up on me, but they decided to stick with me. So I really appreciate them. For them, this is a gift that I put all my music life in.
2YOU: It would be awesome if the fans who were sitting at the parent-child seat became adults and listen to the song now.
KOKI: THey probably already thought like an adult and understood at the time. Haha. Or they started to know when they turn into adults. They might just think it is a cool song but didn't really know what it means at the time. Haha. If you thought about it, music is so amazing! Depending on when you hear the song, you would have different feelings and memories about it. In a way, it is like music is always right beside you.
2YOU: Well, in terms of right beside you, Koki's music is everything about Koki, right?
KOKI: Well, this is all I've got. Haha. Actually, after my incident, I also thought about doing other things. However, as a result, I cannot think of anything else to express other than expressing it through lyrics and songs. This is the only way I know how to express and how to fight. When I was young, I was being bullied. Even at the time, I couldn't fight back and yelled "asshole!" However, through music, I can. This is my way of fighting.
2YOU: It is difficult to find your way of fighting.
KOKI: For most people, what we want to do and what we have to do are usually not the same. However, luckily, it happens to be the same for me. So even people look down and doubt "you are still doing it?" I wouldn't give it up for the world.
2YOU: Sorry if I offended you but it is very convincing from someone who has failed. I believe those who are troubled can really hear you.
KOKI: Yeah! It is true! I think it is very rare that people have a worry-free life. There are so many people who are worried and troubled. I think I am confident that I can convince them I am the living proof. "Look at me! Checked how many times I have failed! And look at me now!" Of course in order to convince them and convince myself, I need to continue to work hard. I am not sure what is success for me but I know I have to succeed. This is important for me and for those who look up to me.

Theory on Rinkaku and Magayasou
These theories make sense until you realise that the key chapters had not even been released when Kyo wrote those songs, which must have been ages before ARCHE came out hah. The difference is technically just a couple of months though sometimes...
It all started when I watched Tokyo Ghoul:re and that the characters spoke of “Frame Out” out of nowhere. I knew that expression had appeared in one of Dir en grey’s lyrics, and indeed it was my favourite Magayasou.
A quick Google search shows that “Frame Out” is not really used all that much to refer to anything in particular, so it would be odd even by Japanese standards. And yet, framing out, breaking through too many levels/frames of your power, is iconic of one of the characters from Tokyo Ghoul:re, Urie Kuki. However, considering the concept, the lyrics do not have to refer to that character specifically.
Tumblr media
I did not read the manga at all beside researching this “Frame Out” utilization, but Magayasou does refer to “red tsura tsura” too, which could be an onomatopea used in a comic. The lyrics mention bloodshot eye(s) as well, which could be said of the ghoul eyes.
Then, I realized that Tokyo Ghoul’s main character, Kaneki Ken, has the ghoul Rize’s kagune (power) which is a Rinkaku type. Of course, silhouette and scale are written with different symbols, but Kyo is also known to play on words. Plus, now those short tentacles or whatever protruding from his Rinkaku artwork seem to make sense...?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also keeping in mind that Kyo is a confirmed otaku.
Anyway. Unfortunately nothing sticks very clearly due to the risk of anachronism, and he definitely went beyond Tokyo Ghoul’s story in his writing.

Notes on Gender, Ethnicity, and Culture
At the heart of the etoneki conflict/drama is nothing more than culture clash.
Eto may be amazing at studying others and have replicated humanity well enough to be a respected author among humans without anyone finding any clues to her ghoul nature, not even Haise in RE: - but she is still someone who was raised by ghouls. Her base nature is as a ghoul, from the 24th ward specifically. Naturally, there’s going to be some confusion between her and Kaneki, who was raised by humans.
But that leaves the good good question of what those differences should be. Clearly, some should be tiny, but there NEED to be huge misunderstandings bc I live for that kind of drama. Also, it’s a slowburn, so. that’s how it is.
this is long, and tagged for spoilers for a good reason. nothing specific, but if u like being surprised by the plot in ur grapefruit, go no further as of chapter 5
1) Ghouls have ABO while humans do not. Sure, there was a decently long time where Kaneki lived among ghouls, but can u picture early chapter Touka willingly sitting him down and giving the birds and the bees and the grasshoppers and also the spiders Talk? I think not. Maybe Kouma? Itori would. Like, they’d both kill him dead with it, but they would. And knowing the contexts within another culture doesn’t mean that you have assimilated those words/concepts to your own yourself, or that you actually know every single social detail, especially as it applies to others.
...but Eto does. And human gender/sexuality is fairly simple on the whole, except when it isn’t, so she has a leg up on him there.
plus, the way I have the ABO structured, it makes a bit more sense for him to be less aware of it, since his gender, as perceived by ghouls, is the most privileged one. Especially since its associated with deliberate power gain, which he totally played into during the later half of the first TG, so it would be a natural assumption for ghouls to make that he understood that he was acting exactly as his gender is socially expected to. and in a way that would socially cement his powerful omega status.
Tsukiyama would totally say something about it, since with the whole affluent family thing he’d probably be very aware of gender and social dynamics, but anything shuu says can be followed by “and he called me a cabbage in French last week, so okay shuu, whatever poetics ‘omega’ means to u, go ahead, have your fun buddy.” Banjou, who was involved with Rize, would be too worried about offending him or making it embarrassing to say anything. and as a ghoul even lower than shuu, he’d be super conservative about getting up in an omega’s business. It would just be this ambiguous open secret that everyone but Kaneki is totally, painfully aware of. the gasmask trio find this hilarious. Hina is a wee bab whose parent was a doctor for ghouls, so she just accepts her big bro as is.
so there’s eto’s expectations to be basically an underling to someone powerful as a normal, comfortable relationship dynamic, pitted against kaneki’s human-embedded inclination toward monogamy and not something that feels like weird bdsm domination stuff. they each are expecting a certain treatment from one another, and not getting it. eto feels neglected, since he isn’t all in her business and allowing her to settle in the shadow of his power and just ride things out, and kaneki, with only human expectations for sex, gender, and whatever the hell just happened, expects the worst from her as the “““male”““ in the relationship who manipulated him.
the conflict is that neither happens.
all of the power is on his side of the court, but in human terms, it feels like the opposite - vis a vis, human misogyny and all the horrible expectations for a sex and reproduction based marriage system that go along with that.
which is why i’ve inverted all that to make myself feel better :)
2) i kicked knots out bc idk about that business, but there have to be other physical differences. there have to be, or its boring. and then again, since both are hybrids, what should either have?
i’ve decided eto will have all physical differences or a learned equivalent due to ghoul socialization, while kaneki should have none but whatever was forced on him through his kakuhou - ie, pheromone stuff, but nothing more.
ghouls can purr, bc i am weak to that shit. Kaneki is aware of this. it’s just a Thing that they do. he’s read to Hina and she’s fallen asleep purring before and it was adorable. irimi purrs very quietly when she cleans things. uta is a purr machine when he makes masks, and it knocks yomo out unless he’s drunk, then he just purrs like a truck engine from the floor near uta’s desk for three hours. touka hasn’t purred since ayato left
eto purrs when she’s satisfied with her writing flow, which is one of the main reasons she prefers to work alone in her apartment and keep shiono out. otherwise, she doesn’t mind company. she also purrs when happy, like most ghouls. kaneki does not. i can site Haise’s RC scan on this: since he never took damage to the throat, he never had a chance to heal ‘more ghoul’ in that area.
so the exchange of a happy eto, deeply content with their uneasy peace, purring to express such delight, meets a blank wall that doesn’t agree. her social expression of happiness clashes up against kaneki only maybe leaning toward physical affection and being quiet. he can understand that she is happy, and she can understand that he can’t respond in the same way, but the dynamics of their relationship make her doubt her actions and get instinctually afraid of doing something wrong and upsetting someone much more powerful than her who also decides if she is allowed to reproduce with him or not. and stops purring and gets unsettled. kaneki is only confused and maybe she doesn’t like being touched? time to touch less. oh no, she did do Something Wrong and now omega is mad at her!! interpersonal drama escalates on both sides >:3c
ghouls have great night vision. kaneki also does and you know why. youve read the series. full ghouls have tapetum lucidum in both eyes, but eto only has it in her single ghoul eye. her vision is unbalanced in the dark but due to her learning to compensate for the slight reduction in light capture on one side she gets by just fine. it also parallels nicely with arima’s poor eyesight and learning to compensate for it.
ghouls are crepuscular while humans are diurnal, but this doesn’t matter since neither of etoneki know what a sleep schedule is. and the 24th ward doesn’t experience day/night cycles, so they have their own issues with sleeping when safe, do not sleep when not safe.
ghouls tend toward pack structure, but not in a rigid way where there can only be one omega/powerful ghoul per unit. as long as everybody gets along personally, its fine. omega don’t see each other as competition. alpha toss themselves at their feet without prompting. they’re not a scarce resource. alpha don’t even really fight over omega unless completely affected by heat and rut cycles and unable to grasp the concept of maybe next time. but even that is rare, mostly only those who are jealous as a person attempt this. if alpha fight over an omega and one wins, the omega might just kill them for taking away some of their prospects, or might be impressed by the show of strength. or annoyed by it, bc they want weak underlings. depends on the person. (eto is more than a bit possessive, at least for his first heat.)
more on this point as i think of it.
3)  I haven’t specified kaneki’s personal gender identity for a reason. that reason is that i’m not sure what direction i want to go. this is strictly for maman, not Sugar, which is trans girl Sasako forever. for this piece of feti/sh garbage? whom knows! (I know. and until word of god says otherwise - i’m god - every character is trans.)
but really, there’s options. and i love them all.
A) kaneki was trans all along. hide is best bi bud. aunt was a bitch, but nothing worse than canon since he was closeted at the time, although he doubly prepared to never speak to her again. (true neutral)
B) woke up a ghoul and with new parts. why believe a species change but not a sex change, eh? heightens the early game confusion and search for id as a person whose major ids have changed against his will. (lawful neutral)
C) gradual transformation. like how he came into his strength as a ghoul slowly. read a doujin like this once. was okay. quality art, big titties, 8/10. ngl would read the sequel. (Perhaps I am writing the sequel? aren’t we all just chasing our Brands across the lonely internet, hopping from one computer virus to the next? maybe u die reading hentai, or u live long enough to see urself post to ao3.) (chaotic neutral)
D) heals himself a new set of parts due to intense damage. see the haise RC chart, which has a ton of pathways around the hips/torso area. parallels with cutting eto in half?? (also lawful neutral)
E) started happening as a transformation when eto’s pheromones triggered his heat cycle for the first time. boy would he be pissed at her X2 lmao (lawful evil)
F) transformation during #240 time due to losing all memory and only having instinct to structure his body with, and just enough RC pathways to make a hormone based transformation possible. Chiba would have had a field day, but also would have torn out his horrible bowl cut in confusion. get rekt bud. not even #240 knows wtf goin on (neutral evil)
G) maybe he just wanted a vag! thought about that?? learns he is supposed to be able to manipulate his flesh like his kagune, which he is canonically great at, and just Goes For It. it works. he is a strong, dependent idiot who don’t need no dick. (iconic)
H) same as above, but that’s just what Haise does when he has the reigns. looks deep into his pastless self and asks ‘do i have to put up with this cis nonsense? not today.’ (chaotic iconic)
I) it happens suddenly when he activates his kakuja for the first time. queer the monster transformation u wish to see in the world. just. so confused. but also there’s Guilt to be felt about banjou and amon and such, so that’s back burner. (chaotic evil)
okay, so in like fifteen minutes i was able to name 9 perfect opportunities for ishida to carry though the motif of 1)iding with female ghouls 2)paralleling with canon trans man mutsuki 3)litcherally having a female ghoul organ donation fiasco 4)being associated with vacillating between masculine yang and feminine yin black/white 5)having a narrative that revolved around accepting his body and learning to find his own strength and id that is different than what he was born with - but coward ishida stopped sixty miles short of the mark. fool. I Cannot Feast Upon Crumbs, Sir. Sir, You Have Given Me Airplane Peanuts For Supper. Sir, I Am Starving And Antagonistic At Best.
(i shouldn’t call him a coward. three huge series magically having the same Wife And Kids ending all during the time shinzou abe is in office? probably not a coincidence. hope they got a good payout for it. i’d sell out for that $$$ too tbh)
eto is just an alpha. her human social id is a Normal Human Female Who Is Totally Cis and Straight for maximum social acceptance and ease of integration, but that’s only her mask. her personal id is an alpha, which is cis by ghoul standards, and she uses she/her pronouns bc she feels like it. she has the power to id as above alpha, but she enjoys the social invisibility it gives her, since she can blend in the background whereever and noone looks at her presumably weak ass twice. like chie, but for nefarious purposes.
....does that make her the equivalent of a ghoul feminist? i’m getting Too Deep
4) the wards can be isolated and far apart, and its been explored in canon with the Three Blades family and the white suites - congrats u 2 - and ghoul organizations that have a home ward having distinct cultural differences from one another. small ethnic groups and isolated diaspora? natives? subset?? of whatever the 24th ward ghouls - sorry, tokyo humans - are.
this sort of thing is only tangentially related to kaneki. if someone with a texas accent teaches someone to speak english, that person will have that accent, whether they’v ever been to texas or not. so he has some of the social mannerisms of a 20th ward ghoul, but generally still has a lot of ingrained human attributes to confuse them.
5) i’m still fascinated by the half finished thought about there are just some ghouls who become binge eaters in canon. like Rize wasn’t special for it. I think shinohara mentioned this?? but. it makes sense. general food insecurity, lack of permanent social support, total oppression, absurd power levels, plenty of humans to take it out on...ye.
and kaneki has the kakuhou of an adult binge eater. there’s cool hints of the kakuhou being parasitic, so a mature one would def fall into the biological fulfillment of binge eating for strength and carry that genetic knowledge into a new host. and from there, it would induce cravings, serotonin reward systems, and all that good stuff to get what its come to like.... like, mayhaps, a cordycepts? ;)
well, i’ve put ‘binge eater’ down as just a general omega trait, since it feels authentic to do so, so we’ll see what i do with this in the future. i will also see, since i too am ignorant of my own self. what will my horny subconscious do next? i am usually the last to know.
anyway,
peace

Top Five Kana Hanazawa Roles
Does anyone know whether she’s still dating Kensho Ono? I’m kind of curious now. I hope everything worked out for the both of them. If they get married, they will be an iconic seiyuu duo for sure.
I won’t be including anime that I haven’t watched in its entirety, so that means I will be excluding Nadeko Sengoku from the Monogatari series (that means no Renai Circulation), Naho Takamiya from Orange, Akane Tsunemori from Psycho-Pass (I’ll watch that eventually), and Mayuri Shiina from Steins;Gate. And by “entirety”, I mean I have watched at least one season.
I even had to narrow down my honourable mentions. Kana Hanazawa has that many good roles. A lot of the ones I took out were either because I didn’t like the anime themselves (ex. Danganronpa’s Chiaki Nanami) or I didn’t like the characters themselves (ex. Zetsuen no Tempest’s Aika Fuwa). Actually, I didn’t like Zetsuen no Tempest at all in both characters and stories. Bones can only do so much to animate their way out of a garbage can.
Honourable Mentions (That I Have Watched)
Seryuu Ubiquitous - Akame Ga Kill
Tumblr media
Nobody likes this character, and that’s okay. I have a soft spot for some crazy anime characters when they’re done right, so I didn’t mind her at all. Twisted as she is, I don’t think you’re supposed to like this character, but I’ve got to admit, she was a badass. Sure, she killed a lot of people, but that dog was kind of cute when it wasn’t committing a massacre. Also, she had some awesome fight scenes and a great death scene paired with it. That’s barely even a spoiler. We all knew where this anime was going. It rivals AOT with its death count. Here are “All Deaths Under 15 Minutes”.
Kougyoku Ren - Magi
Tumblr media
At the end of it all, she’s just a teenage girl who had a crush on a guy that didn’t like her back and was notorious for being a f***boi. That’s okay though. Here’s another badass with awesome powers that can kill a lot of people. She’s responsible for one of the most iconic moments in the series despite being a supporting character, and she has a lot of cute moments. She’s one of those girls who can make flower crowns and beat you in a fight. She’s also a princess. Here’s a video (it’s basically a compilation of her relationship with Alibaba in the anime) and here’s another with a fight scene.
Shiemi Moriyama - Ao no Exorcist
Tumblr media
(This moment alone makes me want to watch the anime again even though it wasn’t very good)
Shiemi may not be the best character, but she’s way better than poop eyebrows (I have a feeling no one knows who I’m talking about, but she’s her classmate who’s an absolute bitch). Here are some ship moments, and here’s some brutal friendzoning.
Anri Sonohara - Durarara!!
Tumblr media
(She’s the girl on the right. I couldn’t just not use this gif.)
Durarara is a weirdly enjoyable random hodgepodge of random ideas put together. Her, Mikado, and Kida get stuck in a whole lot of weird stuff, but I definitely didn’t expect some of those turns.
Natsume Tsuchimikado - Tokyo Ravens
Tumblr media
Okay, maybe this anime was a pile of crap from a critical perspective, but I still enjoyed it besides some of the cringy moments. I was expecting Natsume to be more of a badass, but at least she can summon a dragon, right? She also did some stuff near the end... I guess.
Top Five
5. Rize Kamishiro - Tokyo Ghoul
Tumblr media
Name a worse first date. Kaneki ended up nearly getting killed by her, but that doesn’t matter. A bunch of other shady stuff happens, and it doesn’t make sense until you read the manga. Isn’t that nice? Anyway, it’s just nice to see the insane range in this role, and even though Tokyo Ghoul (anime) is kind of dumb, at least we know there’s a good cast backing it up.
4. Kanade Tachibana - Angel Beats!!
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched this in ages since it was one of the first anime I watched, but this role is kind of feels-worthy, so yeah, it’s going to be on the list. Sure, she has no emotion most of the time, but she’s oddly mysterious and has some things going for her. I mean, she’s one of the only characters to get proper development out of that large cast. And that last scene with her and Otonashi is known to be quite the moment.
3. Kosaki Onodera - Nisekoi
Tumblr media
Because casting is so important, somehow this role made it all the way up here. While I didn’t like Kouki Uchiyama being cast as Raku (I don’t like Raku as a character either), I thought Kana as Onodera was a good choice, and she did it well. I didn’t like Nisekoi. A lot of its humour was derived from Raku getting the crap beat out of him, and the romance part is just utter torture. If you’re keeping track who the “best girl” is (between Chitoge and Kosaki) I would choose Kosaki any day of the week. I would prefer not to get beat to a pulp. But at the end of the day, I still can’t believe Raku made the wrong decision.
2. Roka Shibasaki - D-Frag
Tumblr media
Wow. Two harems back to back. You know, this one didn’t even say it was a harem, and to be fair, that’s because the majority of the series is surrounded by the game club and the comedy writing of the show. I actually liked the cast of this show, and it did make me laugh. I didn’t like the romance part of it too much because I felt like they shouldn’t have included it if they weren’t going to go beyond where they did. But Roka is still a funny character. Who knew that a loli would be the underground boss that can intimidate delinquents?
1. Shiro - Deadman Wonderland
Tumblr media
Deadman Wonderland is not as bad as people make it out to be. Sure, there is a rough beginning that makes practically no sense, but I’m sure they explain it further in the manga somewhere. Shiro is a weirdly insane girl who just wants to be with Ganta. She may or may not have committed mass and/or serial murders, but when has that ever stopped her? Kana Hanazawa was great in this role, and I wouldn’t want to watch the dub just because I feel like the original duo (Romi Park and Kana Hanazawa) are great the way they are.

Dan and Phil Tag
I was tagged by @jorzuela and since I haven’t done one of these in a while, I decided to do it!
Under the cut because it’s vvvv long
What made you subscribe to Phil? Dan? I’m gonna be honest, I have literally zero memory of ever subscribing to Phil. Like, as weird as that sounds, I honestly don’t know how I ever found him or when I ever subscribed to him. So I don’t know but I think it was because I had been watching Dan for a while that I subscribed to Phil by default. As for Dan, I was really into Dan as a Youtuber because I found him to be super relatable and he could make me laugh super easily so he won by subscription.
How or when did you discover Phil? Dan? I first discovered Dan in 2013 and it was because I had been suggested a video from him and it happened to be the one where he waxes his legs with Louise lol and I fell in love with him as a person. I thought he was hilarious and funny and I was like ‘how did I not find him sooner?’ As for Phil, I’m assuming I found him through Dan but like I said above, I have no memory of anything that has to do with how I found Phil.
Does Phil have a particular mannerism you find endearing? Dan? Dan’s charm is what I find super endearing. Because he has this natural charm and easily becomes the most charming mother fucker you’ll ever see. And he’s also so nice and kind and soft and like, when I met them, I was so beyond nervous but his voice was so soothing and comforting and he made jokes to make me laugh as I stood there almost in tears. As for Phil, it’s his laugh. That cute laugh where his tongue pokes out between his teeth when he finds something super funny. Like, ugh, I’d die for that man.
Favorite Dan Video: Hm...I think my favorite Dan video of all time has to be either “I mumble” or “What NOT to do at University” because they both are videos that make me laugh cry.
Favorite Phil Video: “Why I changed my Emo hair” and “Reacting to my deleted videos”. I know they’re both recent but I love the level of comfort that he gives us now in videos and these videos are just iconic and I love them.
Favorite Gaming Video: OMG UNDERTALLLLLEEEE! AHHH! I could watch them play Undertale literally allllllll the time! It’s one of my favorite gaming series from any of the gaming YouTuber’s I watch. I also like Golf with Friends but Undertale is just...the best.
Favorite Dan Photo:
Tumblr media
^^^^ This one obviously
Favorite Phil Photo:

^^^ these two lol
Favorite Dan and Phil Photo:

Favorite Dan Instagram Story:
Tumblr media
This one where he eats the donut but there is already a bite in it
Favorite Phil Instagram Story:
Tumblr media
The one where he goes to take a selfie but it’s a video instead and he’s wearing the plaid jacket
Faborite Dan Tweet: "I wonder how biology can explain the physical pain you feel in your chest when all you want to do is be with someone D:” November 22nd, 2009
Favorite Phil Tweet: "OMG some old woman opposite us is making Voldemort noises on the train and dan keeps saying Harryyy and it hurts not to laugh” August 12, 2011
Favorite Dan Live (ie-Live Show, Live Stream, Radio 1) Moment: The one right before they moved out of their apartment and he kept being giggly and jiggling keys
Favorite Phil Live (ie-Live Show, Live Stream, Radio 1) Moment: When he and Dan were on Rize and he told Dan he could say vagina
Favorite Dan and Phil Live (ie-Live Show, Live Shows, Radio 1) Moment: The liveshow where they are both in their underwear and try hiding it by moving the camera every time the other one got up from the blanket
Favorite Fan Artist: I actually don’t have one! Sorry!
Favorite Fanfiction Author: @iihappydaysii , @waveydnp , @phandomsub , and many many more!
Favorite Fanfiction Story: Hands down, Disturb the Universe by iihappydaysii and Equilibrium by Phan_anon!
Who should Dan collaborate with next? Phil? Together? Safiya Nygaard! I would literally do anything to see them collab with her! Could you imagine the type of video her and Phil would make? It would be ICONIC. I also really want them to do a gaming collab with jacksepticeye! One where they play just like Mario Kart or something because I feel like they all would have a great time playing together.
What should Dan’s next merch include? Phil? Together? I want some nice minimilst clothing from Dan that looks designer but isn’t. I want more of his personality and style to reflect his clothing. As for Phil, I’d prefer a better variety of colors. Like, not just white but maybe a powdery blue or lavender colored t-shirt or sweatshirt. I’m also not a big fan of the socks (sorry) so I think maybe other things that could replace the socks (not like, replace them but have more than just that for people who want an accessory and not socks).
What song best describes Dan? Is it sad that the only song that came to mind was ‘Stronger’ by Kanye West despite Kanye being cancelled?
What song best describes Phil? I don’t know why, but 80’s songs are coming to mind so yeah, something from the 80’s lol
What song best describes their relationship? “A moment like this” by Kelly Clarkson! Was literally just telling Claire about this the other day because every time I hear this song, I think of them.
What should their next baking video be? I want them to do something super complex. like maybe follow a Rosanna Pansino recipe or something!
And to finish, If you could tell them one thing: I didn’t get a chance to literally say anything to you both when I met you but I honestly want to thank you for allowing me to be part of this place where I can finally feel like I belong. I want to thank you for being the reason I smile and laugh and the reason why I’m even happy any more. Also, I’m very sorry about how when Dan said to me “Thank you for watching our videos and supporting us, we really appreciate it” that my reply was ‘No problem’.
TAGGED: I’ll tag @laddyplester , @phloridas , @optimistphan , @daisydanyul , and @knlalla !

Another Munday Prompt
Remember to repost, not reblog !
Name:   jun , junie , my parents were very creative for their little gemini and i was just as creative in using my real name as my alias
Preferred pronouns:   she / her
Selectivity:  idk honestly i just follow people i’m interested in ? i immediately follow blogs that belong to my friends or are from fandoms i love !! i’m bad at graphics myself so i don’t look too much at the aesthetic but i do expect some attention to theme organization and icon quality (if they are used) .
Favorite animal:  san
Favorite muse you’ve had so far ever:  ok like ... san is so beautiful and was my everything as a kid so i adore her to death as a character (i have a fuckin tattoo of her) but she’s a bit hard to write for as a muse . i used to write senjougahara hitagi from the monogatari series and that was really fun !! i fell out of love with the overall franchise but at the time only two or three of the shows were out and i loved her so much rehuirwjfekld lelouch was also a lot of fun in terms of the interactions , but writing was never easy .
Muse you kinda wanna pick up:  ummm just from ghibli films i want to write howl again , lady eboshi , and ashitaka . from video games , 2b and accord from nier/drakengard , and a bunch from lol (ahri ofc , camille , xayah) . i’ve also wanted to write naoko from norwegian wood by haruki murakami for a loooong time ! i’m working on a kanba takakura blog (mawaru penguindrum) , and want to make a rize (tg) when i eventually finish reading the series . in general i feel a lot of muse for a bunch of niche characters , like yuuko kanoe (tasogare otome x amnesia) , furudo erika (umineko) , makishima shogo (psycho-pass) , togame (katanagatari) , maron kusakabe (kamikaze kaitou jeanne) , isuzu sohma (fruits basket) , shizuka hio (vk) and train heartnet (black cat) . also i want to write half the gintama cast lmao (kagura , kamui , kouka , sougo , tsukuyo) and a bunch of characters that would require a partner (taki from kimi no na wa , nozaki from gsnk) . do yall now see why i have 4052 “active” blogs
Most identifiable fictional character:  actually asuka from evangelion and kamui from gintama come to mind ? kamui esp even though i’m not a sadistic killer type lol ? idk i just felt like i understood where his rage towards his family came from and how he has difficulty coming to terms with loss and embracing forgiveness .as a kid i really related to san but i grew out of that when i was hit with real life heh
What color your aura is/think it is:  red ?
Personality stuff you agree with (astrology, mbti, Hogwarts house, etc be as specific as you want!):  just mbti i guess ? i’m a pretty stereotypical entp lol i don’t think i’m super gemini tho
Do you think you’re a good driver:  good enough
Favorite minor discourse:   i’m an entp i have a problem with everything
Favorite vine and/or meme:   LOOK AT ALL OF THESE CHICKENS
Why did you choose this muse:   my desire to write was dying and going to a muse that i obsessively loved from childhood seemed like it would save me ?
Favorite rp memory:   idk honestly i like making playlists and shipping with my friends heheh ( rachel and howl will always be a favorite ) and memeing on lelouch with my dumb friends was nice
Favorite thing you’ve written, in rp or not: probably my shippy things with shizu???
Give a shout-out to someone:   i love myself and shizu and all the other cute friends i have but i talked about shizu a lot and i just woke up so hi shizu idk if you’ll see this

David LaChapelle was born in Connecticut in 1963 and attended high school at North Carolina School of The Arts.  Originally enrolled as a painter, David began to experiment in the medium of photography developing an analogue technique of hand-painting his own negatives to achieve a sublime spectrum of color before processing his film.
At age 17, LaChapelle moved to New York City.  Following his first photography show at Gallery 303, he was hired by Andy Warhol to work at Interview Magazine.
Through his mastery of color, unique composition, and imaginative narratives, LaChapelle began to expand the vernacular of photography.  His staged tableau, portrait and still life works challenged devices of traditional photography and his work quickly gained international interest. By 1991, The New York Times predicted, “LaChapelle is certain to influence the work of a new generation...in the same way that Mr. Avedon pioneered so much of what is familiar today.”
In the decades since, LaChapelle has become one of the most published photographers throughout the world with an anthology of books including LaChapelle Land (1996), Hotel LaChapelle (1999), Heaven to Hell (2006), Lost & Found, and Good News (2017).  Simultaneously, his work has expanded into music video, film and stage projects.  His 2005 feature film, Rize was released theatrically in 17 countries. Many of his still and film works have become iconic archetypes of America in the 21st Century.

Some Thoughts on TG Movie
Hi friends, so the movie’s officially out in my country only on the 24th or something, but by tearing apart my wallet I managed to get the tickets to the special premier and cosplay event woohoo. I wrote what I honestly thought about the movie and it got kinda long + spoilers so I left it under the cut.
In short, is it a great adaptation? Nah. In this arc itself, it’s also hard to say if it did better than the anime (if we ignore the anime’s weird chronology). But I went in with no expectations at all so I enjoyed the movie while I was watching it and it’s only after thinking through and talking about it over dinner did I notice certain issues.
The movie covered events from Volume 1 to the end of Volume 3 in the span of 2 hours which naturally means a lot of things had to be cut. There were stuff I’m bitter about that’s cut but I see why they did it and I decided not to bother too much. I also would like to add that I’m not too familiar with Volumes 1 and 2 since the only volume I’ve really read recently from the pre-Aogiri period is Volume 3 so spare any mistakes I might make from what I recall from the manga.
I’d like to highlight that these are mere first impressions. A re-watch might change my opinions on certain things and by no way are my opinions absolute and final. It’s clear a lot of work was put into this and it was really taken seriously, so I do applaud the team.
Spoiler warning: Yes, there are spoilers because this movie is not a 100% reenactment of the manga. There are original scenes and there are scenes that were dropped. If you don’t like to read spoilers because you’re planing to watch the movie, I advise you not to read even if you know this entire arc in the manga by heart. With that done, let’s start! / (='x'=) \
More under the cut!
Since I’m the most bothered about the portrayal of Touka, I’ll begin with that. I feel that Touka was somewhat shallow in this adaptation. There isn’t the scene with her killing the creep who was messing with her so Kaneki found out she’s a ghoul only after she stopped Nishiki from trying to kill Kaneki. She still offers Kaneki the meat relatively nicely, but he rejects and runs away. Touka’s cold to Kaneki from this point onwards and there’s still the whole part about her asking him about how cake and all tastes like. But there’s nothing about her saying that it’s been hell for her since she was born nor was there the part where he called her a monster, so this kinda made Touka’s character seem harsh simply due to bitterness over the fact that he used to be human, which is clearly not the case in the manga. Just this earlier bit itself doesn’t seem to really convey any of Touka’s suffering as a ghoul, nor does it really portray Kaneki’s fear of these ‘monsters’ as deep as the manga does. So clearly, the beginning to Touken’s relationship itself here lacks the depth and complexity from the manga. Instead of really having deeply-rooted sentiments against each other which led to a friendship after the Hinami ordeal, it becomes more of a ‘I can’t stand you at all.’ on Touka’s part to eventually being comfortable around him.
The other bit that got me really pissed off was the fight against Mado. They took out the newspaper bit as well so Hinami left the place because she smelt Ryouko instead of her own fears and insecurities, which also meant that whole scene with Touka hugging and comforting Hinami was removed as well, which I was really upset with since I was looking forward to that a lot.
The fight was basically Touka getting wrecked most of the time and absolutely no mention of Touka having the potential to be as troublesome as Owl. Touka has her speech where she talks about ghouls wanting to live on and all but they didn’t include her flashback of Hikari (they didn’t include the Ayato flashback as well actually) and I was expecting this to be cut out like the anime did but I was really sad because I wanted those Kirishima feels lmao. Oh wells. But more importantly, due to the earlier exclusions of Touka talking about how shitty her life was this speech felt a little less heavy than it did in the manga.
Now, the part that really ticked me off was the end. After Hinami attacks Mado, Touka asks her to kill him off, which Hinami refuses to. In the original, Touka doesn’t do anything and only rushes to kill him right as he was going to attack Hinami. But in the movie, he was struggling to go to his quinique and hadn’t even reached it. Touka’s decision to kill Mado felt really flat to me because it doesn’t seem like she killed him to protect Hinami. It seems more like her killing him just because Hinami refuses to do it, which also makes it a little iffy to me because I’ve always enjoyed how the Touka’s part in this arc is a transition from a tale of revenge to one of protection.
Oh, but Touka’s relationship with Yoriko was adorable and one thing I liked about this movie was when Yoriko came to Anteiku to bring some food for Touka and she ate it. The whole part about her not wanting to vomit it out in the bathroom happened in Anteiku as well, with Kaneki standing outside and listening to her. It’s kinda creepy to think he’s listening to a girl in the bathroom but I like how Kaneki managed to notice from this bit how Touka’s struggling to maintain her balance in the world-- they took out the bit about Uta talking to him about Touka so I guess this was how Kaneki realized how hard she was working.
That was long but let’s move on.
They missed out the iconic part where Kaneki narrates about how it’s be a tragedy if he was the protagonist of a story, but I suppose it suits the feel of the movie because the movie itself didn’t end with tragedy since it concluded at the end of Hinami arc.
Hide’s convo with Kaneki in the beginning is cut by a lot actually and it seems he already knows Rize is Kaneki’s crush (he points her out to Kaneki when she walked in). He was trying to get Kaneki to ask her out on a date which is completely different from the manga. I think the movie was really trying to go with a ‘normal kid’ Hide because he doesn’t really show that much intuition as he does in the manga/anime. Though Nishiki still mentioned that he’s a little wary of Hide. But, according to the subs, Hide seemed more scared that Nishiki might ‘chew him out’ for work-related issues rather than because he felt suspicious of Nishiki as a person. Also, it’s hard to tell if Hide knew Kaneki became a ghoul because instead of bringing him to Anteiku, they brought him to the hospital and he was unconscious until quite later on in the movie. There’s no interaction between him and Kaneki as well after that because Yoshimura told him to stay away from Hide, which is also completely different from the manga since in the manga it’s Kaneki who thought he had to stay apart from Hide. Anyway, the complexity of Hide’s character seemed absent, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt since it’s only the Fueguchi Arc after all.
Also, Hidekane fans rejoice, there’s one scene where Kaneki just licks Hide’s face repeatedly.
Another thing that made me go “????” was the CCG’s investigation methods and how they tracked Hinami and her mother down from her father. I won’t say too much but my friend who went with me was commenting that even CSI doesn’t do it that way so it’s either CSI super backdated or the CCG has some pretty high tech stuff they’re keeping from everyone else. This is a joke of a point. Let’s move on.
Amoneki fight scene was a let down at the end because they failed to deliver the final bit appropriately. They did have Kaneki not wanting to become a murderer but Amon didn’t respond nor did they hold a conversation. Also, Kaneki ran off and remained sane enough to join Touka and Hinami and help them out. It’s a pity the bit with Yomo was left out because if I recall right, that’s the first time Yomo called him by his name?
AND, I have to mentioned this. In Root A, Ken cried blood tears for Hide. In here, he cried it with Amon. Amoneki shippers can rejoice as well.
Also, I have no idea why Mado’s the one who’s always munching on doughnuts instead of Amon.
Let’s go to the good bits of the movie.
DUDE THE ACTING. I really loved it. I expected Kubota to be able to pull it off and he delivered it as I thought he would. Shimizu wasn’t too bad as well, honestly.
But I have to give special mention to Mado’s actor. One thing I take away from 6 years of being in Drama is that if you’re a villain and you make the audience truly hate your character, you’re a great actor. Oizumi really pulled off the role so well that I have newfound hatred for Mado right now. It’s amazing really, to the point that it felt like Mado really overshadowed Amon a lot due to sheer quality of the acting.
Hinami’s actress as well deserves another special mention because oh my god, I felt so sad for her. The scene where she’s crying over her mother’s death is one of the best scenes in the movie because it felt so real and amazing. I’m really so impressed and god, she’s just 14??? This girl is talented as hell. Also, I’m glad they got a 14 year old girl to act as Hinami so thank god we didn’t get the 9 year old vibe from the anime.
Not to say the rest were bad, Hinami and Mado were just really good. Which also makes that one scene when they were together another one of my favorite scenes.
Moving on. If I have to be honest, this movie is super gross and eerie and I LOVE THIS. The scene when Kaneki first discovers he’s a ghoul has him lying sprawled amidst scattered food and his own vomit when some hallucination of Rize comes, pins him down and kinda messes with him and licks his eyeball (just like Eto did, yes). And while this was happening, the shadow on the wall formed a centipede and while at this point in time in the manga the imagery hadn’t appeared yet, I really loved this bit. And right as it disappeared, he rushes to the bathroom to clean himself up and that’s when he sees his kakugan on the eye imaginary Rize just licked. Kaneki walks around Tokyo when he just changed with his hands so obscenely (in a way) in his mouth and saliva like all over (I think it was saliva, I might be wrong). I think there was one part he went to sleep like that as well.
Other than this, in fights and all those other scenes, the blood and all tend to be really messy and all over the place. The blood’s super thick and you can just see how sticky it is so it’s really super gross when you see it like dripping out of their mouths.
The sound effects were pretty good as well. Fueguchi 1 makes a really creepy noise whenever it’s being used and it’s somewhat annoying yet it adds to the whole intensity of the scenes. When Touka broke Kaneki’s finger the crack was resonating everywhere. It’s probably due to my own bad experience with broken bones, but I cringed so badly at this. And I think there were a little more bone breaking in their whole training segment because Touka mentioned that they heal fast from fractures and they didn’t have to worry about breaking bones in fight. It happened in Amoneki fight as well, I believe. I really loved how chilling the sound effect was.
Also, the focus on that finger when Touka was stepping and breaking it. It’s so disturbing. (Again it might be me being bad with bones, but I was grimacing the entire time and I hated it so much it’s amazing, I think?)
The kagunes vary because I loved Kaneki’s and Ryouko’s but Touka’s kagune felt really plain to me. I didn’t like how it seemed really solidified because the Kirishimas’ kagune aren’t actually like that unless they crystalize it. The flowy-ness and glow was absent, which was what I really loved from their kagune so I found that a pity. In a way, Touka’s kagune felt a little creepy, just like all the kagunes did, which in my opinion was a little off because her kagune is supposed to be quite beautiful. Like they couldn’t really deliever the duality of the kagune, in a way...? If that makes sense. Nishiki’s was really nice too but it was a little too big and powerful. It looked like how it’s like in :re (and yet he got wrecked by Kaneki lmao). But overall they did a good job with the kagune!
Also, the kakugans were well done. I loved the glowing red eyes when Rize first showed her eyes. (And I have to add, the sudden change in her voice was amazing as well.)
The fight scenes were pretty weird though because clearly most of it was CGI. But there were also a lot of slow-mo sequences that were really awkward to look at, but it’s not too bad frankly. I did find Touka’s speed a little too unrealistic because she was practically being the Flash, which is a huge contrast to her Root A run but still a bit off.
There’s a lot more of course, but this is what I recall mostly. Well, this is only my first watch so it’s merely first impressions. I don’t know if I’m going in for a second time when the movie is officially out but a second watch might be better. There were also a bit of original scenes, like one of Kaneki at Fueguchi’s grave, but I decided not to talk about them since they actually fit into the story quite a bit and added on to the whole emotions and settings. The grave scene and the scenes preceding it were really sweet actually.
To be honest, I wouldn’t mind a part 2 made from them or even if they decided to turn the entire thing into a movie or something. I would love to see the Gourmet arc and Tsukiyama. The ghoul restaurant would be amazingly disgusting, I just know it. And Aogiri!!! The Jason torture + 103 bones scene would be perfect. I’d probably close my eyes and ears during the 103 bones scene but whatever screaming Ayato-kun is never a bad thing.
Anyway, it’s late. I should sleep. :p If anyone’s gonna watch the movie, I hope you have fun! Do go in and enjoy yourselves and not be too cynical about stuff. ^^

Built For Counterterrorism, This High-Tech Machine Is Now Used To Detect Fentanyl

Sarah Mackin runs a cotton swab around the inside of a tiny plastic baggie that appears empty. She spreads whatever residue the swab picked up onto a test strip that resembles a Band-Aid, then slides the strip into a buzzing machine about the size of a boxed, take-home pie. Then she waits, hoping for information that she can share with Boston’s community of opioid users.
Mackin is using an MX908, a mass spectrometer initially marketed as a counterterrorism tool. The machine can help military teams looking for traces from biological or chemical weapons, or hazardous material specialists trying to identify materials present in spills or explosions. But now the MX908 has been commandeered in the fight against fentanyl, one of Boston’s — and the nation’s — top killers.
The machine rapidly analyzes a sample of drugs and can detect and identify dozens of types of fentanyl — a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin. Increasingly, fentanyl is mixed with heroin and cocaine, often without the user’s knowledge, and it has become a major contributor to fatal drug overdoses in recent years.
It’s too early to know how helpful the MX908 could be in lowering the mortality rate in the country’s ongoing drug abuse epidemic. But that’s why Mackin, the director of harm reduction services at the Boston Public Health Commission, is field-testing the machine.
Mackin looks down at a screen that spans the top of the MX908 and taps an icon labeled “drug hunter.”

“This is something that was sold as heroin,” Mackin said, dangling the baggie as the machine whirs through its cycle. The MX908 can identify 70 specific types of fentanyl in a tiny sample, and alert users about the presence of more than 2,000 not-yet-named fentanyl analogues.
It also detects the presence of MDMA, cocaine and meth — all based on tiny samples left at the tip of a needle, or even wiped onto a cotton ball. About 30 seconds after starting the test, Mackin watches red and yellow warning symbols flash across the screen.
“Oh yeah,” Mackin said, nodding her head. “So, there’s multiple kinds of opioid analgesics and multiple kinds of synthetic fentanyls in this sample that was sold as ‘heroin.’ It’s kind of an example of what the drug landscape looks like here.”
The illicit street drugs sold in Boston probably crossed international borders. They may have been cut and remixed multiple times as they moved along the supply chain. Drug users rarely know for sure what they are buying. Drug-testing devices like the MX908 can help identify additives that raise the risk of overdose.

Take the experience of a woman named Bri. (KHN and NPR are using only Bri’s first name because she uses illegal drugs.) One day last July, Bri brought in residue from some of her drugs when the machine was set up in downtown Boston. On that day, she had three different samples. Bri had already overdosed on a hit from one of the bags.
“That’s why I wanted it tested,” Bri said. “I thought there was carfentanil in it.”
Carfentanil, sometimes called the elephant tranquilizer, shows up in the Boston drug supply sporadically, along with other increasingly powerful and deadly forms of fentanyl.
In Bri’s case, one of her samples showed no trace of drugs at all, one tested positive for a medical-grade fentanyl, and the third showed traces of a substance in the potency range of carfentanil.
“Now, I’m going to be honest,” Bri said. “If I was sick and I had one bag of dope on me and you told me there’s carfentanil in there, I’m not going to lie and say I wouldn’t use it. But I would know to not put the entire thing in.”
Bri said she knows ingesting that particular sample would be a very risky move. But with that knowledge, there are steps she can take to reduce the risk of death: She can use the drugs in the presence of a buddy who can observe her for signs of overdose. Bri also carries naloxone, a drug used to quickly reverse an opioid overdose.
These precautions can help Bri moderate her risk of overdose, and research shows that is one main way that drug testing saves lives — whether it’s done through a machine like the MX908 or lower-tech methods like fentanyl test strips.

The Value Of Drug-Checking
Another way drug-checking can save lives is by alerting local authorities, like the Boston Public Health Commission, that deadly concentrations of opioids have been found in the local drug supply.
It’s complicated, however. Addiction is such a powerful disease that such warnings might actually spur use, unintentional advertising that draws people seeking an ever-more powerful high.
But Traci Green, a researcher in emergency medicine at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University, said her research, as well as some European studies, show that drug-testing is ultimately beneficial: When drug users have the power to test what they buy, they seek out drug dealers with the safest supply.
“So this improvement in consumer knowledge and confidence in what they’re getting, and how to use it, can improve the safety of the larger supply,” Green said.
Green will evaluate this trial run of the MX908 in Boston. She said she’s especially interested in learning whether its deployment can attract hard-to-reach drug users, the ones who traditionally avoid contact with any institutions or medical care. Access to the MX908 might bring them into a setting where they begin to interact with outreach workers, and possibly begin a conversation about treatment.
A Steep Price Tag And Legal Issues
One other city, Chicago, also is testing the MX908 as a harm reduction tool for the opioid crisis. But there are reasons why it may not be more widely adopted. One is the price tag: $65,000.
In Boston, the city paid for the device through a grant from RIZE Massachusetts, a foundation focused on combating the opioid epidemic.
“Cost is one concern,” said RIZE CEO Julie Burns. “But what is the value of a human life? If we decide through the evaluation that this is something that is reducing overdoses, I believe it is worth the investment.”
Still, there are cheaper ways to find out if a drug baggie contains fentanyl.
Street outreach workers have been distributing fentanyl test strips, which cost about $1 apiece, for more than two years. The current Massachusetts state budget includes $150,000 to expand access to these test strips.
Like the MX908, the strips show the presence or absence of fentanyl — though the machine can offer much greater detail, as well as information about the presence of several types of stimulants. (Neither the machine nor the test strips can reveal how much fentanyl is in a baggie.)
For now, harm reduction programs will have to decide which drug-testing tool is most cost-effective, based on their goals and budget, said Greg Scott, who leads the Chicago Recovery Alliance, or CRA. The CRA began an extensive drug-checking program in March that includes two MX908s.
Scott said that, so far, the MX908 is delivering on two goals: helping people use drugs more safely and offering real-time information about the drug supply in Chicago. But Scott said unless drug-checking becomes much more widespread, it won’t force drug dealers and suppliers to “clean up” the drug supply.
“Getting to that scale and that level of impact is a very costly endeavor,” Scott said.
Another reason public health workers may hesitate to use the MX908 is that doing so may be illegal in their jurisdiction.
“Drug-checking is a legal gray area,” said Northeastern University law professor Leo Beletsky. “There are provisions in Massachusetts law and the laws of pretty much every other state that might be interpreted to consider drug-checking devices as ‘drug paraphernalia.'”
That includes fentanyl test strips. Illinois enacted legislation in August that exempts people who test their drugs from prosecution. In Massachusetts, lawmakers are reviewing a proposal to make use of drug-checking tools legal.
Boston police said they aren’t involved in the MX908 pilot and referred questions to the city’s public health commission. The U.S. attorney’s office in Massachusetts declined a request for its perspective on the use of this device for public health purposes.
The MX908 is also used in more traditional ways by police, fire and hazmat teams across Massachusetts. Even they have found that the leading enemy agent is fentanyl, said David DiGregorio, who directs the hazardous materials emergency response division at the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. His department has about a dozen of the machines.
“If you had asked me if I was going to be involved in drugs five years ago, I would have said, ‘No, it’s not my job.’ It’s become my job,” DiGregorio said. “Hazmat calls are up in the last two years, exponentially, and a lot of that has to do with drug calls, because we can identify these powders in the field.”
This story is part of a partnership that includes WBUR, NPR and Kaiser Health News.
