Me, age 86 : the difference between good and evil in chainsaw man is quite clear actually. The 'good guys' see others as humans, they acknowledge the humanity of those around and treat them with that basic minimum dignity. Which is why Denji, Power, Aki and the others may work for Makima but they will always be separate for her. Because Makima doesnt see others as people, she sees them as objects to use and discard as per her benefit. It is not a coincidence that she is a government agent, the government establishments that we worship in popular media do not see you as a person either. When push comes to shove they will not care about protecting you, you will always be an object to them to use for gaining power and respect , and then discarding as deemed fit. Only certain types of people seek, gain and can maintain power in beurocracies, and these are people who should never be trusted fully. This is the moral of chainsaw man.
The attendant at the nursing home that is going to put me down in a few days because the world has run out of drinkable water or the capacity to grow food so now the right to survival is guaranteed only to those rich enough to afford it: ok grandma let's get you to bed

One of the themes in Goncharov I found fascinating considering its timeframe and setting is the idea of surviving despite everything. Despite the violence, the destruction, the uncertainty, you can still make it through. It also ties into the theme of how the characters' perpetuate a cycle of violence. Circumstances may change, but the method of handling it stay the same.
This is highlighted by the two gangs featured, one affiliated with the Russian Mafia and the other the Italian Mafia. The two groups were changed by the events of WW2, and had adapted to survive in the new society they found themselves in. Still, their methods of how to handle things stay the same throughout it all, which at its core is violence.
The characters go through this in their own ways. Everyone ends up resorting to violence to deal with their circumstances. However, this ends up being a, literally, fatal flaw for them. They lean too much into their ways and they end up facing brutal consequences. Ice Pick Joe's murders come back to him and he dies with his weapon in hand. Goncharov is killed after having betrayed everyone, getting a taste of his own medicine. Katya can make anyone disappear, but that leads to her own unknown status.
What they all fail to realize is that they needed to survive, not just succeed. They were so deep in what they thought was their only choice that they couldn't see the opportunities they could have taken to change these circumstances.
Sofia, however, seems to be the only character to break her own cycle. Everyone else dies in the end, but she was able to look away from everything just long enough to accept these opportunities. This is why she ends up as the sole survivor of the film. It can seem like an act of cowardice, like she ran away from her problems, but I believe it was a successful act of self preservation. She realised it wasn't worth sticking around to see if things got better. You can't help anyone if you're dead.

Since it’s finally getting the attention it deserves, I thought I would take a moment to highlight some of my favorite video essays about Goncharov.
- “In the shadow of Goncharov” by Jacob Geller, about the effect of German expressionism on the set design, and how this film would go on to change modern video-game design sensibilities forever.
- “The movie that (almost) killed Scorsese” by Kaz Rowe, a really interesting look into what a disaster the production was and how close it came to being shut down. (Warning for explicit descriptions of what happens when someone is pulled into a reel-to-reel camera. There’s a reason this movie has an entire page in the OSHA film set guidelines devoted to it.)
- “Cigarettes and unwound clocks” by orsonwellsstan69. A really good queer reading of the film, along with some history about how it was an underground queer hit at the time. (just uh. Don’t look through the rest of their catalog. They have some really weird problematic takes about citizen Kane.)
I hope you enjoy; I especially wanted to boost these because that stupid “The Anya theory solves everything” video is circulating again. such anti-intellectual bullshit

Okayokay so i have this friend who was literally the last person you'd expect to know anything about smth like goncharov bc she's like always so serious and doesn't have any social media and all that (at least that we know of)
... Except today i joked about goncharov while she was still at class which (as far as i can remember) was the first time it happened (we had talked about goncharov before but i dont think she was there). And she whipped her head and was like wtf are you talking about (she DOESN'T do that, take my word) and we were like ah nothing just goncharov, the greatest mafia movie ever made lol expecting her to be either wtf what is that movie or like cool never heard about it
But... She didn't do that. She stopped for a moment like she had short circuited... And then she exclaimed with like x4 her regular voice volume, "Oh yes I love that movie!! The *something* scene is awesome!!!" Before running away before i could ask what was that something that i didnt really catch (i got smth about monkeys i think? Idk) and then when the next class finished she had already left (she's in another class)
She has tumblr right? I mean all the signs are there... Istg im in shock and idrk how to approach her about that (imma probably just ask its not even close to a secret between my friends that i have tumblr) but like..... Wow. Wow wowowowow. Im genuinely surprised, i couldn't concentrate at all in the next class

pictured here, trending on tumblr in the year 2022: the 125-year-old novel we've been reading for the past few months and the infamously obscure movie we collectively decided to care about almost 50 years after its original release

Lmaoooo
Nah I getchu. So this post has been circulating for like two years:
Tumblr media
Link to post.
But yesterday, it had inspired someone to do this:
Tumblr media
Link to post.
Next thing I knew there were fake Letterboxed reviews.
Goncharov moodboards. Really good ones.
Tumblr media
Link to post.
Meta analysis. So many fake meta essays. Disturbingly good ones. And of course the memes. (Edit: HAVE I SAID THIS SHIT IS DISTURBING)
As you can see, the myth just started to grow, characters and ships and tropes being added one after the other, almost bizzarely without contradiction, until there was enough of shape to the whole thing for people to start posting fanfic about it on AO3. "No beta we die like ice-pick Joe" is already a tag.
Tumblr media
Link to post.
It was hilarious in the beginning, but the way it's developed within less than a day, kind of like it's being willed into existence, is freaking me out a bit. We're toying with powers beyond our comprehension. 😂😂😂
Tumblr media
Link to post.
Of course, there could be an ulterior motive as well.
Tumblr media
Link to post (tags mine).
Edit: guys, please tag these posts "unreality" so people with disassociation issues can filter them out (not this one, this is an explainer). <3
----------------------------------------------
Edit 2: Aparently the boots in the original post are actually referring to a movie called Gomorrah that came out in 2008, directed by Mateo Garrone, based on the Scampia Feud. And other people had also been making posts about the fake movie for a while before the poster took off.
found by @thepotch
Tumblr media
Edit 3: Explainer: why did those boots have this movie on them anyway?
Edit 4: Alt text added to all images courtesy of @valentineish ❤️
Edit 5: Turns out tumblr has done this kind of thing before. Nine years in this hell place and I had to have "Squiddles" and penis smp explained in the replies.
Edit 6: This post collects the Lore so far.
Edit 7: Lynda Carter (real one)/ earns more/ Tumblr cred.
Edit 8: Holy shit y'all we have the theme music. With sheet music. And it's on Spotify!
Edit 9: THERE IS A TRAILER WITH THE THEME MUSIC
----------------------------------------------
I made this post 18 hours after the movie poster went up. Closed edits 27 hours after first posting. So all of the above happened within 45 hours of the movie poster going up.
Edit 10: Google document live-compiling all the lore so far (Day 3)
Edit 11: Masterpost of Goncharov soundtracks (Day 3)
Edit 12: Entertainment news articles covering the Gonch-posting (real) (Contd from yday)
Edit 13: The music from the masterpost all compiled into a 31-minute original score with video edits on YouTube (edit: unfortunately taken down)
Edit 14: Staff's Goncharov art showcase for Tumblr Tuesday
As of closing on Day 3 there are 371 works in the AO3 tag.
-----
Updating with Day 3 shenanigans I missed yesterday:
Edit 15: Goncharov TV Tropes page
Edit 16: Ethics of Gonchposting
Important PSA 1 (how to reduce harm to Tumblr's neurodivergents)
Important PSA 2 (reality affirmation, anti-bullying)
Important PSA 3 (why you should stop trying to vandalise legit information sites)
Edit 17: Character lore from beezlebub whose poster they originated from
Edit 18: What we know about/ Director Matteo JWHJ0715 (#unreality)
Edit 19: Link to post with screenshotted and described NYT article (scroll down) and this golden exerpt from BuzzFeed: 💀
Tumblr media
(alt text included)
End of Day 4 there are now 485 works in the Goncharov tag on AO3
----
Didn't get to update this on Day 5, so these are the Day 5 doings:
More trailers!
Trailer 1 (My favourite)
Trailer 2
Trailer 3
Trailer 4
I also just found out about the Goncharov Game Jam.
Tumblr media
It appears this opened a day after after the meme took off.
Goncharov was first entered into Wikipedia between Day 4 and 5 (attempts to vandalise it with fake info don't count, incidentally – please knock that shit off) under List of Internet Phenomena. This was then expanded into its own Wikipedia page at the end of Day 5 because, according to the talk history: "the topic now meets the notability threshold for its own artice due to significant coverage in The New York Times and other sources cited." We're on Wikipedia, people!
And then we made The Guardian half a day later. So while the meme is definitely dying down to embers by now, it still stays winning.
YouTube channels with episodes on the meme:
InformOverlord (4:30)
Lessons in Meme Culture (2:43)
End of Day of 5 there were 511 works on AO3, and End of Day 6 (today) there are 556.

🚨BREAKING 🚨 from Martin Scorsese's daughter's TikTok (real actual)
tw: unreality:
We did it you guys!
Clarification: Francesca Scorcese asked her Dad about the meme and Martin played along. Please reblog this PSA to help Tumblr people with psychosis. Thanks.
Final edit: Day 8. Media reactions to Scorcese's TikTok (everyone from Forbes to Vulture). That one Tumblr user who said they'd do a screenplay if their post got notes has promised to shoot a single scene, but please don't be dicks just because you reblogged it; leave them alone until they get around to it themselves. As of end of Day 8 there are 609 works in the AO3 tag. I love all you lunatics. Peace! ❤️
