Hi!! I hope it's okay to ask, which university are you/were you attending? I want to study animation in university but i have no idea which one to choose, so can you please tell me about yours?👉👈

I go to CSUF! It’s definitely one of the cheapest places to get a degree in animation in California, if not the US.

Only a handful of the California State schools offer animation, and most of the ones that do are 3D only, and I wanted to learn 2D.

SJSU has a good 2D anim program, and they’re the only state school in the bay area that does, BUT last I checked you need something like a 3.9 GPA to get in?????? like HELLO these are animation students. who are you fooling

the other schools I considered were CSULB and CSUN.

CSULB has a strong animation program! They have the guy that literally created the worldwide 24 Hour Animation Challenge. However, they required ONE extra art history class that none of the other CSUs needed, and I didn’t have it, and I wasn’t about to prolong transferring a whole other semester just to take it. (It was prehistoric art history, I think, which I admit sounds cool as fuck)

The reason I chose CSUF, beyond liking their curriculum better than CSUN, was because I heard about the Pencil Mileage Club. It’s the largest student-run animation club in Southern California. I’d argue that networking is almost more important than your actual skill. I’ll admit, the faculty is probably not doing as much for the students as other schools, but PMC more than makes up for it. I’ve made all my friends (and girlfriend teehee) through this club. I was president of my Art Club at my community college, so it was important to me to be part of PMC’s council. I’m now an event coordinator and so I help organize and run events and studio tours and guest speakers! :)) Clubs and extracurriculars look fantastic on resumes, so wherever you go, look into what’s available.

Things I should note: when you start at CSUF, whether as a freshman or through transferring, you will not be an animation major yet. You have to do the portfolio review first, and you can’t have any of the prerequisite classes in-progress when you apply. The portfolio requirement is only a few years old, too, and therefore it’s not nearly as competitive as, say… calarts or sheridan. I often say, students make the program better, not the other way around. the higher the level of students that apply, the higher the overall education quality will need to be to match that. Though this does mean that the higher quality a program is, the more people will be excluded, unfortunately.

CSUF’s aniamtion program itself is…. a little silly. You take storyboarding and character design after doing your short film ? for some reason? The new department head started at the school the same semester I did, and she’s definitely trying to make it better. She held a screening of the production classes’ finished films, and she told me she plans to have the curriculum restructured by 2025 (after I graduate, lol).

I’ll also mention that the art buildings are in the process of getting demolished and rebuilt. The first wave of new buildings won’t be done until the end of this year, and once that’s finished, they’ll tear down the remaining two buildings and start remodeling those. For now, we do a lot of our classes in the modular buildings jdhshfjs 🫡

We also have a mated pair of gay ducks that come every spring. Their names are Pebble and Rock. They are beloved by the art students.

And really, you don’t NEED a degree in animation to get into the industry. There are SO many online resources out there, a lot that are free, that can give you just as good of an education (in fact, several of my professors’ lectures have just been playing youtube videos and pulling up articles). BUT your classmates WILL be your future coworkers. If you’re not establishing relationships with people in some way on your own, you definitely need to make that bigger priority. After all, you won’t be working by yourself when you’re in the industry.

reflections on the year, my plans for the future, some studies i did, and wips for the next year all down below for those who are interested

oh dear lord it's been another year. 2024! can you believe it! i don't talk much on this blog because i have a tendency to talk too much, but it's my little new year's treat, so here we go.

RECAP

i started taking drawing "seriously" in December of 2020, starting to do studies and stuff, and each year since i've ramped it up more and more. this year, i did. a lot of studies. there's probably like at least 200 more in my folder now (not including the 300 days worth of gesture drawings i did), with things like painting, faces, feet, poses, etc. anything i was struggling with, i went right into studying it. my art has been mediocre for a pretty long time now, and it's only the past few months where i feel i'm starting to get the hang of it, which is exciting!

more importantly, i started posting a lot more on this blog. i really like documenting my progress, looking on where i was before and seeing how i've improved. everytime i draw some fanart, im like, oooghh i can't wait to show my (: followers (: !! lots of locked tomb art of course. i've been trying to nail the energy of the different characters, which is why i enjoy books so much, because you get a lot of creative control. drawing ianthe is my fav of course, cause she's my lil nasty, but also i enjoyed doing designs for characters i hadnt thought about before, like judith.

in addition to the locked tomb, we had some new fandoms that got brief moments in between iantheposting: Fear and Hunger, Postal, Faith The Unholy Trinity, and a couple of old ones too, like We Have Always Lived In The Castle and The Merciless.

i posted about 115 times this year, although most of those are shitposts LOL i love posting stuff on my blog and showing people my stuff <3

THE FUTURE

my plans? do more ianthe art, of course. ill be working on more studies, probably going to work on developing a style, and figuring out how to paint. i'd like to do more actually finished pieces, but let's be honest, it'll still be mostly shitpost doodles. i'd like to do more weird stuff. i've been messing around with some gore and NSFW near the end of the year, and it's fun to draw for me. i like idk art that evokes some type of emotion, especially discomfort, and so i find that type of art fun to do, so if you don't enjoy what i've done thus far in that direction, perhaps this isn't the blog for you. i really like horror media, and so i want to do some stuff like that too.

for specifics, i like western type art, a comic book-esque style i'd like to aim for. but i'd like it to be a little more. weird with it. i find comic books often draw all the characters the same, and make all the characters traditionally attractive, and that's boring to me so i'll have to work on finding a way to keep things weird, while also appealing in a graphic sense. the worst thing my art could be is bland and forgettable.

locked tomb wise... more tridentarii art. need to be really weird with it. i have lots of wips planned, like i have a whole page worth of just thumbnails, so i wanna get some of those done. also i had a few animatics i wanted to do. mostly stupid shit, once i learn how to do animatics, then we'll do actual serious ones. id also like to do more comics. i have some comics storyboarded out with my girlies, i like telling a story so, need practice on that. id also like to develop a way to consistently draw them, for convenience sakes, so i'm not fighting for my life every single time i draw these characters. oh and i wanna do some outfit stuff. i draw them in like. generic clothes everytime but i'd like to come up with a few actual outfit designs, that i can just reference back to. and, of course, more shitposts. lots of stupid shit in 2024 for sure. there was something else i wanted to say here but i can't remember.

oki enough rambling, here's some IMAGES for yall to look at i know everyone loves to look at images.

began this year by warming up with gesture sketches (almost) every day. i started with 20 poses (30 seconds each), and then in november i was like. ugh my hands suck i need to get better at hands, so i switched to doing 10 hand sketches (60 seconds each). i want my art to be very energetic so it's important that i do these !!

anatomy studies of extremities because i'm flopping at those -_- ive gotten better with hands but they're still a struggle. i hate feet tho still

need to get my painting game up. i joined an art forum to get advice, and the biggest suggestion i got was working on my values, so i did various value studies. also lots of faces because my faces flop !!

random doodles to work on drawing from imagination. on my "sketchbook" pages, as i like to call them, i'm usually pretty loose and messy, since the point is just to be drawing so often these will suck, but that's fine. i don't think very much when i draw faces on here either so they end up being in my Instinctive Style i suppose you could say

ianthe wip. i was planning to do a few drawings based on the idea of her having Missing Arm nightmares, but the lineart was intimidating to me so i haven't worked on this one more yet /: also there was going to be a toontown gay homosexual toxic yuri comic that i was gonna put here with it but the page is way too long so umm guess that'll have to wait.

10. What's your favourite piece of fanart for Kevin / Rolf?

For Kevin I'd say any fanart by guainumbi, like this one. (Fun fact - although they deactivated ages ago I found the artist on insta and I got in touch with them... they were really happy to hear of people still enjoying their old fanart 😊). Another honorable mention is chocowhomps' awesome stuff, their transmasc Kev AU is kinda out there, but you gotta respect that kind of passion and commitment.

For Rolf I'm thinking this this Rolf galore by mariekanker, they always draw him sooo scrunkly shsjdshjd💥. And shape101's portrayals of Rolf's family and all the OCs they made were fun to see.

11. What's your favourite piece of fanart for kevrolf?

It's gotta be this masterpiece. It blows my mind that it's got WAY much more notes than any other kevrolf fanart (getting close to 1k I think! wtf, that's like top eene posts... well, apart from that ship we don't talk about). I'm also fond of this doodle thing, maybe one of the first ones I ever saw, and it's so ancient I used to think it was done by a storyboard artist, but someone confirmed to me it came from Brah-J (kik0thek1ller) on deviantart (they did fanart way back when the show was still on I think)

12. What's the funniest or craziest AU idea you've ever come up with?

In my deeper brainrot moments I've definitely imagined some zombie survival AU, mostly to entertain myself. It's a common AU idea, I know (oh no, now I'm remembering @torra-and-the-toons's unfinished In The Ed comic, oh the memories... *rubs eyes*)

16. Do people irl know you participate in fandom?

No way haha, I'm kinda reserved about how I spend my time, let alone being in a 20+ year old cartoon fandom. But I guess I could have some fun chats with my big sis about it cause she knows me well for the loonie I am 🤣 and she's a tv show addict anyway.

22. Give us a headcanon for Kevin / Rolf

-Kevin is a bit touch-starved (surprise surprise, I keep drawing parallels between him and Eddy lol), it's kinda self-inflicted because of the tough guy persona he puts up, and how high-strung he secretly is while pretending to be "chill". I think Nazz in her sensitivity might realize this eventually and help him be more genuine with himself and others. Rolf and her should give him some surprise hugs 😁 although it would annoy him (this fanart is sweet btw)

-Despite his frustrations, deep down Rolf is very grateful of his surroundings and how tolerant and friendly everyone is with him, and he grows more conscious of this as he grows up. He could have been a lot more unlucky, especially in school, a kid like that would be a prime target for bullying.

50 Questions about Koisuru Boukun

(Interview with Takanaga Hinako from the Koisuru Boukun Art book, published in 2013 while vol 9 was being publish in Gush)

Q1: How did you create the challengers and Boukun characters? When you were creating "Goukaku Kigan" had you already created Souichi-san?

How? ...Well, when I made my debut work, Goukaku Kigan, I really felt the weight on my shoulders to make a good BL manga, since it was my first 32 pages of a real original manga! Thinking back on it now I think I had a lot of preconceptions about what a BL should be during those planning stages. I thought things like the seme needs to be a great guy! and the uke should be the cute type.... Though I feel like once I had finished the storyboard I had already deviated from that... (He was a pathetic seme, not a great guy...)

For Souichi, after my first work had been published I got permission from my editor to continue it. So he's a character I came up with as I happily thought about how to continue it. Since I wanted a character to interfere with the main couple. And Morinaga-kun naturally came about as I developed Souichi's character.

Q2: I want to know how you came up with the title!

I really wanted to use the word "Boukun (Tyrant)" so I came up with a few candidates but my editor at the time didn't like them and so I remember that we were discussing what to do over the phone and I just casually suggested "maybe Koisuru Boukun (Tyrant in love)..." and my editor instantly said "That works!" and ran with it. Maybe I was influenced by "Koisuru Wakusei..." (lit Planet in love, Japanese title of Chungking Express) I believe in my original candidates there were also other movie influenced titles, stuff like "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" (lol). I don't have my notes from back then anymore though, so I don't know what they were.

Q03: What was the most difficult thing you experienced while writing Koisuru Boukun and what was the thing that made you the happiest?

The most difficult thing... I don't know. There was a lot of stuff I can't talk about... (lol) The thing that made me that happiest was definitely the fact I'm able to put out an art book like this and have people read it!

Q04: You've written Koisuru Boukun for a long time, is there anything you felt as you've continued the story?

The style of call phone they used in the first volume was really old so I thought I should upgrade their phones at one point but now I feel like they have to have smart phones? That's the way of the times. But in the story it has only been one year... They're working students who are constantly changing their phones. Oh dear...!

Q05: Between Morinaga and Souichi-san, tell us honestly, which one do you like more?

I said this about the characters in Little Butterfly too, but honestly they're both really important characters to me. I've written them for so long they feel like family to me... But if I had to choose... then I guess I'd have to say Souichi-san because he's hotter (lol)

Q06: Do you have an idea of what you think Souichi-san and Morinaga-kun's image song's should be?

Hmm... I've never really thought about their image songs before... For Morinaga-kun I think a sad love song would suit him. For Souichi-san a song with words doesn't really seem like him... Oh! I know! Dorae...

Q07: Please tell us which color illustration is your favorite?

The one where Souichi-san is biting the ice cream... having Souichi-san colorized in a tanktop gives off an unusually refreshing feeling so I quite like it. Also the one with them in casual coles in the leaves. For a more recently one then I also like the color illustration that was for GUSH's 100th issue celebration too ♪

Q8: Is there any backstory for the characters that hasn't made it into the story?

Of course there's a lot of stuff that hasn't made it into the story yet! But since I'm not sure whether any of it will make it into the story from here on or not I can't say. I'm sorry!

Q09: Souichi-san is a rare uke with long hair in BL. Are there times when you think it's a pain to draw?

Souichi-san's hair isn't a pain to draw at all. His hair is white and I'm good at drawing long hair... Morinaga-kun's hair is much harder. Colored hair with shine is hard. Colored hair with shine is hard for everyone! It makes my right hand hurt...!

Q10: Are there any types of characters that you thought wanted to include but don't have any plans on including from here on out?

Back during challengers there were some I thought about but since they wouldn't suit the Boukun setting they went away. Hmm but since they just went away because of that problem I shouldn't really talk about them here...

Q11: Were there any characters you used as models for the characters in Boukun?

There weren't!

Q12: Out of all the characters in Boukun, please tell us who is the easiest and hardest character to draw.

Just from a drawing standpoint? I think the easiest is definitely Souichi-san. The hardest is Morinaga-kun... Kunihiro-san and Masaki-san are quite easy. But when it comes to expressing thoughts and characterization, Souichi-san is hard. His way of thinking is biased and comes to abrupt stops and since he's not the main character there are limits to his monologues...

Q13: Which character out of all of Boukun do you think is the best looking?

I think the most beautiful one is Masaki-san but the most handsome one is definitely Souichi-san. (Where does that leave the seme Morinaga-kun...?)

Q14: I'm interested to know which scene is the most memorable to you out of everything so far? Or maybe there's a certain line?

The series of scenes at the business hotel in volume 4 were really a turning point so it's really memorable. I also really like the scene in volume 6 in the washroom of Matsuda's house...

Q15: If it were you, which character in Boukun would you want to date? Or who would you definitely not want to date?

The one I'd want to date is definitely Morinaga-kun. He's better looking than average, really smart, kind, and amazing at housework...! It's to the point where I wonder "just what is Souichi-san so dissatisfied with!?"... (it's because he's a guy) His super sticky clinginess is a bit of a pain but if you return his love he's much calmer. The one I don't want to date is... unsurprisingly Souichi-san... (lol) Oh and I also wouldn't want to date Kunihiro before he got divorced either.

Q16: I want to know what type of person Souichi-san likes.

His type... It's touched on it a little bit in the current serialization, but I don't think he's thought about it much himself. Probably someone who's not too clingy. I think he'd like a capable woman who was really open minded? He lost his mother at an early age so I feel like he probably has a bit of a mother complex...

Q17: This is a question about Souichi-san. His hair is pretty and long but why did he start growing it out?

You can assume it's because of what was stated in the extra for volume 2...

Q18: What brand of cigarettes does Souichi-san smoke?

I've probably never clearly shown it anywhere but I vaguely remember deciding they were Marlboros at the beginning... But I could have drawn them wrong at some point so don't take that too seriously please!

Q19: Since Kurokawa-san and Isogai-san were classmates in university, I'd like to know about how they met.

Ah, this was briefly mentioned in the pamphlet for challengers but Isogai-san was working at the beer hall when the owner was looking for good looking guys to work there and so he asked him to tell people he knew if they were interested. So then Kurokawa-san got roped into working there because he saw a posting on the University bulletin board because he was desperately searching for a decent part time job.

Q20: Will Isogai-san be happy in the future? What type of woman does Isogai-san like?

I'm sure he will someday... I think he would like an open minded woman who would accept his hobbies... or even better a beautiful woman who would enjoy them together with him.

Q21: He was sent model guns as a present from Kurokawa-san and he can sing all the anime songs from top to bottom so is Isogai-san... actually quite an otaku? I want to know his hobbies.

No matter how you think about it he's an otaku (lol) I'm sure he likes manga, anime, and games but I think he's much more of a manly otaku? Like he's more of a military and pro wrestling fan? Probably something like that. But he likes to observe and mess with the people around him so I think he's pretty extroverted for an otaku?

Q22: Kurokawa-san quit his job and went to the USA. Has he been a house husband since then?

I have decided that he's a waiter at a cafe, but since Tomoe-kun is so busy at work I think it's only a part time job and he's essentially a house husband.

Q23: How long have Hiroto-kun and Morinaga-kun known each other?

Since Morinaga-kun came to Nagoya (when he entered university) so, about 5 years? Morinaga-kun was looking for a gay bar as soon as he came to Nagoya...

Q24: How is Matsuda-san related to the Tatsumi family? She's always looking after the Tatsumi siblings like a parent so I'd like to know more about Matsuda-san.

Umm she's their relative. She's their mother's (Hana-san's) older sister. In other words she's their aunt but since they call her Matsuda-san... you can't really tell... Actually I originally intended for Matsuda-san to be their "Aunt from Matsuda". In my family we called relatives by the place they lived like "my Aunt from 〇〇(place name)" so it was supposed to be borrowing from that. (In other words Matsuda was a place name) But for some reason at some point that became her name... I wonder why. By the time I realized it I couldn't fix it anymore... I thought at the very least I should have Soujin-san call her by her given name but if Soujin-san called her that then the kids would too... So then I decided it was a lost cause and she had to stay Matsuda-san... This might be the biggest mistake I've made in the Boukun series. I'm sorry...

I figure Matsuda-san is the name of her husband that passed away. She got married and lived far away but after her husband died Hana-san got sick and so she moved nearby. Since she never had kids of her own and her younger sister's children were so cute she couldn't help but look after them... that's what I decided.

Q25: Kanako-chan wants to go to a high school outside of the prefecture (one with a dorm even) so does she already have a dream for the future that she's aiming for?

I figured she liked the school because of the variety of subjects they offer or that she was interested in the school culture. I think she does have a dream but it's not that specific yet.

Q26: We were told that Soujin-san's job is insect research but I'd like to know more about it.

I'm not an expert on this and I haven't done that much research on it so I don't want to delve too deeply into it but I guess after he got his doctorate at university he started traveling around the world... and publishing research papers... Because of his achievements in his research he probably had a sponsor and he's probably written a lot of books. (Something roughly like this...)

I think when he's in Japan he probably teaches students at a University? Huh? Maybe not? Maybe he researches how certain insects behave in detail...?

Q27: What was Hana-san, Souichi-san's mother, like? I'm sure she was a wonderful mother.

She was someone who wanted to take care of the household well so that Soujin-san could do what he wanted without having to worry. It's really too bad that she got sick and died early. Kanako-chan was only able to be with her for a very short time.

Q28: Did the Morinaga brothers have a normal, good relationship between siblings before what happened with Masaki-san?

I think they were close when they were little but I don't think they did once they reached adolescence. It's not because of what happened with Masaki-san. I think that it's like Morinaga-kun put up a wall between him and his family when he realized his sexuality. Though I don't think his parents or Kunihiro-san realized anything until it was exposed so I don't think anything really happened until then either.

Q29: Morinaga-kun's best friend Yamaguchi-kun. I'd like to know more details about him.

I haven't really decided anything besides... what's... in the story... (sweat)

Q30: I'm really interested in the past relationship history of Morinaga-kun and Souichi-san.

If I talk about that here then... there could possibly be... a lot of spoilers for the future...

Q31: Souichi-san seems to be sensitive around his ears and neck but where is Morinaga-kun sensitive?

I wonder... For him I'd say it's more mental? Rather than being teased anywhere, being satisfied mentally is what's best for him. Also I would like to add that while Souichi-san is sensitive around his ears and neck, He's also sensitive from his armpits to his waist, and his inner thighs. Inside his mouth and his nipples are also weak spots, and recently he's started to be able to come just from the ba- (cut off)

Q32 I'd like to know why Morinaga-kun and Souichi-san chose the university they did and their major.

I think it's because they both had things they wanted to do.

But Souichi chose the highest level school in the area because his circumstances prevented him from leaving his hometown. I believe that Souichi-san could have gotten into a much higher level school in the Tokyo area if he wanted to...

Morinaga-kun had to leave Kyuushu so I think he probably applied to a few different universities. And N University was just the one he got into.

But if you mean why did I make this the setting then it's because it's my hometown so it's easy for me to collect reference material and I knew someone in real life who was in the agricultural department so it was easy for me to ask them things about it.

Q33: What were Morinaga-kun and Souichi-san like when they were little?

Since Souichi lost his mother early, he had to look after his younger siblings so he was a tough and demanding child.... like a mini version of the current Souichi (lol)

Before Morinaga-kun entered adolescence he was probably a cheerful, pampered child, but I feel like once he realized his sexuality he just became agreeable and closed off.

Q34 I'm sure that Souichi-san and Morinaga-kun are always busy with research but what do they do on the weekends?

I feel like they don't really rest. Morinaga-kun probably takes care of housework that has accumulated... and Souichi probably lives at the school even on the weekends...

Q35: In the afterword for Challengers volume 3 there was a 4 panel comic of Morinaga-kun giving Souichi-san presents but are there any other presents that Morinaga-kun gave him?

I'm sure there's many more. I might make a short comic about it if I get the chance someday!

Q36: I want to know Souichi-san and Morinaga-kun's favorite colors! Also what image colors do you think of for them? Souichi-san: I think he likes white... and his image color is the same. Since he wears a white coat a lot. And white shirts look good on him. Morinaga-kun: He wears a lot of orange, red, and brown clothes so I think he probably likes earth tones.

Q37: Where do they get money?

They get money from their parents. Morinaga-kun probably also works temp jobs sometimes too.

Q38: I think Morinaga-kun is quite good looking, so is he quite popular at the university?

I think he is. I just wrote about that (Volume 9/currently being published in Gush) in the story! (In May 2013)

Q39: How did Souichi-san end up with such an eccentric personality?

I think it's the result of having lost his mother early and him taking his strong sense of responsibility of needing to protect his siblings to the extremes...

Q40: I'd like to know the layout of their apartment! And how much is their rent?

The layout is in this artbook so please check it there! I haven't decided what their rent is but I think places in Nagoya near N University are around... 80 to 100 thousand yen?

Q41: Morinaga-kun and Souichi-san both go to the same university but which one of them is smarter? Is it Souichi-san?

I think Souichi-san is definitely much smarter. But in exchange he's prejudiced. It's like he devotes so much of his brain capacity to his research that the rest of his brain is in shambles...

You could say that too much of Morinaga-kun's brain is occupied by his love life but I think overall he has quite a good balance.

Q42: Do Morinaga-kun and Souichi-san like Japanese food? Or western food? Also what's their favorite alcohol?

I think Souichi-san likes Japanese food and he likes dry sake.

I think Morinaga-kun matches his eating habits to Souichi-san but he actually likes things like omurice, naporitan, and salisbury steak. He has childish tastes. And so he also likes sweet alcohol too♪

Q43: Where would Souichi-san recommend to go sightseeing in Nagoya?

There honestly aren't that many places to sightsee in Nagoya...

Hmm, there's pretty much just Nagoya Castle... maybe Higashiyama Zoo or Oosu Kannon?

I guess there's a lot of gourmet food places in Nagoya like Kissa Mountain...

But Souichi-san doesn't care about sightseeing locations...

You said you worked on tmmt 2012 for a bit, do you have any stories from there? What it was like working on it, workplace stories, etc? It’s one of my favorite shows, (and literally my entire childhood) so i would love to hear anything you have to say about it :D

hey! i'm happy to hear that, tmnt was a huge part of my career. it taught me a lot about workflow because of the sheer amount of action shots we had to animate in such a short amount of time. i wasn't about to work for free in order to finish my shots on time (bardel, the studio i worked at on tmnt, didn't and still does not pay overtime) and i wanted to go home every day at 6, so i made sure i had the cleanest and most efficient workflow possible to make that happen lol

i was on tmnt for about 5 years (seasons 1-4) and honestly one of the best things about it was the crew. i've crossed paths with a bunch of old tmnt coworkers throughout the years after it finished and we still consider each other old tmnt bros, no matter what we've gone on to work on afterwards haha, we were a tight crew

the number one best thing about tmnt though, is it's where i met my partner, who i've been with for about seven and a half years now. he's also an anim lead on across the spider-verse :)

tmnt was a really fun show to work on! i always looked forward to watching new animatics when they came in, there was always a great mix of acting and action stuff to work on, i loved the designs of the turtles and splinter (they made really appealing shapes when posing them), their weapons were really nicely rigged and had lots of controls to make them do cool graphic smear shapes, and the storyboards were always super clear and easy to work from

my favourite thing i animated was actually after i had finished on the show; i left when season 5 started but came back for a special tmnt music video that i worked on with one other animator for a few months. when we were done, i had some free time so i did a bit of an alternate ending that the showrunner ended up posting publicly on his instagram. you can see my username cgratzlaff in the bottom left of that video lol

sometimes i wish i could open up one of the turtle rigs again just to play around with it haha i miss those turts

first off I'm so so delighted that I picked up FE3H last summer and that it led me to finding your writing & especially this fic. what an amazing experience, what a treat with every update, I have all these fun memories now of places I was when I got the update email (and screamed internally every time). a little collection of sense memories colored in.

as for the actual question: very curious about your process. did you have an outline going in? I have to imagine yes (or else you're braver than black friday shoppers). how did you go about structuring this, ie did you have a series of Moments in your head that you wrote around and connected, or did you try to build scenes to fit the arcs you had in mind, or a mix of the two? anything and everything you want to share, I'm 🤲

as for the actual question, indeed. hahaha. ha. i delayed answering this for so long because it kept devolving into an essay about the emotional experience of writing a novel for the first time. well i give up. this is now two posts. one is the actual answer to your question, only ten times longer than it needs to be. the other is an essay about the emotional experience of writing a novel for the first time. so… caveat lector.

first part under the cut. ← not kidding about the caveat!!!!!!

i've talked a little about the process before, so i'll piggyback on that post and dig a little more into the differences between the original idea and the finished product, including spoilers i couldn't get into when i'd only posted 55k. ("only." god.)

technically this did start with an outline. technically because at the time i was brand-new to fe3h and hadn't written anything but a few friend-ficlets in about 8 years. thought "skating au!!", spent a fevered weekend outlining all the major scenes, started in on the writing, and…. very quickly realized that i was nowhere near competent enough to actually. write it. "intensely frustrating" does not even scratch the surface, lmao, of what it felt like to have this thing in my head and only be able to produce what felt like the worst clumsiest tritest version of it. very apropos for skating, actually.

looking back on that outline, it had almost nothing to do with the finished product, especially on felix's side. it didn't have the nationals flounce, the timeskip, training in vancouver, the lake, the nhk trophy sports anime climax, the backstory reveal meltdown. (it did have the redemptive healing free skate.) what, critically, it did have was sylvain's personal arc—burned out, desperate to quit, wants to go to college. it ended at exactly the same place as the actual story, with sylvain and dorothea's final skate together. the last line was one of the earliest things i wrote.

in other words, even though almost everything between the first and last scene changed WILDLY in the process of writing, i always knew exactly what i was working towards and that was invaluable.

insert two year timeskip here! during which i would occasionally reopen the skating doc, take a stab at another scene, feel this ominous sense of foreboding, and give up lol. you can thank the 2022 winter olympics for making me get serious, specifically 1) yuzuru hanyu going out in a blaze of bittersweet doomed quad axel glory 2) shoma uno losing to some eighteen year old. i believe my exact words were (consults notes) "anyway time to go back to my fic where i control the narrative and i decide who wins." idk what made this attempt different than any of the others—right time, right inspiration, right circumstances—but this time it caught fire. in uh. in a big way.

so that's when i wrote what i refer to in that post as a skeleton draft and what i've since come to think of as a storyboard on steroids. this is when felix's arc really took shape, beyond "he is sad… he is mad… he is perfectly positioned to see right through sylvain." the fallout from nationals crystallizing, in particular, was one of the things that snapped felix into place and helped determine the tone and focus of the story overall. (that initial outline had much more of a romcom/classic fwb-to-lovers feel.)

the other thing that did this, of course, was sylvain's narrative voice. when i committed to "burnout who is controlling every single word of every thought to avoid admitting that he is burned out" was when this story became what it is. the voice dictated every single scene, the tone, the shape, what was revealed, what was implied, what was never making it on the page. it led me places i didn't anticipate. it made the cuts for me! cute scene you've got in that outline lol sylvain would never.

i see past me in that post dancing around the length, lmao. well the ""storyboard"", the skeleton, whatever you want to call it, was over 100k. and yet even then, EVEN WITH 100K ON PAPER, there was still so much i had no fucking clue was coming! felix pushing sylvain on what he wants was there, but sylvain never explained what happened. my oc jm gautier (thanks for nothing, three hopes!!!) was an ominous presence, but he wasn't the final boss. there was no memory of the first time sylvain and dorothea met. (<- insane.) there was no glenn skate. i had to write to discover all of that.

so like—i cannot emphasize how much i grew as a writer through the experience of writing this story. prose, structure, character arcs, thematic arcs. i was harder on myself than i've ever been. and if i hadn't had that end goal in sight i don't know if i would have made it through all those iterations—storyboarding, drafting, rewriting, editing. wanting to deliver that moment powered me through any amount of frustration/exhaustion/bewilderment.

wow this post sounds almost normal. nothing about this experience was normal. which is why you're getting a part 2.

Hi, marciabrady! You know so much about the princesses, perhaps you’ll be able to help me with something... I was wondering, where do the rumors about certain princesses’ age come from? I mean, of course Aurora is 16, as she’s cursed to fall asleep at 16. But why is everyone so certain Snow White is 14? And why everyone says her prince is 30-31? If you search about it on Google, you can only find people talking about it/making articles about it/putting it on wikis with NO SOURCES, and it’s maddening 😭 I’m using Snow White as an example specifically because her age gap with her prince is the most criticized, but I always wondered how people know all the princes and princesses’ ages.

Thank you so much for your question! For Snow White, the number 14 was brought up in the storyboard meetings by only one of the many, many writers who were brought on to do Snow White and that writer just used that age as a type of like...descriptor/synonym/mood tone to describe how innocent they wanted Snow White (I've mentioned before that many of the artists wanted to sexualize Snow White and Disney kept maintaining that he'd prefer her to be treated more kindly and for her innocence to be the focus as opposed to her physical beauty, so it's possible that the age was even mentioned to protect Snow White from pandering too much to the grown male gaze). However, Walt wanted to ensure that Snow White didn't have a canonical age since the film was actually catered toward adults and he wanted it to appeal to as many people as possible. He didn't want it to be kid's stuff and to be more indicative of the human experience as opposed to something hyper-realistic like "Snow White is fourteen so she must be a freshman in high school" lol

I will also mention both Snow White and Sleeping Beauty's tales are allegories for womanhood, so even if Snow White was technically fourteen in the beginning of her film (which, again, was not the artistic intention and isn't canonical as it isn't stated anywhere in the film or in the Disney publicity material of the time, which even stated the Dwarfs were "hundreds" of years old but never once brought up Snow White's age!), I do have a ton of 30s novelizations where the Disney team states Snow White knows it'll be a long while before she can marry the Prince because they're both too young- but this was written intentionally in the novelization because it's meant to build the narrative arc that Snow White is a woman by the end of the movie, in a way to parallel the original story's themes and it works because they make it a good while that Snow White is at the Dwarfs' cottage, whereas in the film it's technically only for one night. Also, Marge Champion was around that age when she modeled for Snow White but this also needs to be addressed because it doesn't mean Snow White is that age! Marge also modeled for Dopey and Dopey definitely isn't fourteen lol Adriana Caselotti was the physical basis for Snow White and she even did live action reference a few times but Marge was used for the dancing and movements because Adriana wasn't a dancer. So that could be where else the age is coming from. Plus in some versions of the Brothers Grimm story she's mentioned to be anywhere from seven to fourteen but, again, that isn't the Disney version and shouldn't be taken as such. Adriana, herself, was in her twenties by the time the movie was completed.

Now, when it comes to the Prince, again it might be that was the live action reference model's age or because I know the voice, Harry Stockwell, was in his thirties at the time. But it's not even stated on model sheets so the Prince truly has no age at all. And, honestly, people make things up (about Snow White specifically) because they just want more reasons to hate a film that's over eighty years old. We've gotten to this point where we're obsessed with villainizing totally innocuous things and attempt to reframe the intent of certain media to brainwash us into some horrific movement when that just isn't the case, like in this specific instance. Now, with Aurora, this is also something I want to say- yes, technically it's her sixteenth birthday in the film, but as I mentioned above that's fairytale shorthand for "becoming a woman." She was voiced by a much older Mary Costa and even Helene Stanley, the reference model, was much older. They included it as a nod to the original story, the way they'll include things like making Cinderella's dress blue in the live action as a nod to the marketing from the original, but it's not meant to be taken too too literally. They even redrew Aurora and went back and reanimated her, because the approach was originally someone who was much younger and then they decided to go with Mary Costa's look, which had more volume in the chin and was older. Even so, Aurora and Snow White don't actually get married in their movies, so even if that was the take, there's not a single thing on screen that's wrong in either of these instances! Now, where I think we get into trouble is when we take too literal of an approach- Elle Fanning was literally fourteen when she was in Maleficent and to apply that story to her but take out the notion of true love and just have her pretend to be unconscious while hundreds of random men kissed her on the lips who weren't meant to be her true love...now that's really uncomfortable and those are the conversations we should be having. Not banning Snow White, an ageless princess in her fantasy animated movie, for being kissed respectfully by one man that she sings of as her "prince" who she hopes will one day come as an anecdote for a curse.

First, Catra's little self-indulgent pity party for herself at Scorpia

But yeah Catra's acting all nihilist as fuck in this episode just all "I don't give a shit about anything" in that way that makes it painfully obvious she in fact gives many shits about many things and is trying to convince herself as much as anyone else

Anyway at the end of the bar Huntara's previous friend are like UGH THAT SHE-RA BITCH and Catra literally says, "Are you kidding me?"

"not that like, I care, or anything, but where'd they go"

Scorpia: uhhhh why are we asking about them when that's not what we're here for???

to be fair to Catra this is in fact correct

her little emo speech here is so cringey

that said I am in fact amused that they did a close up on her butt

(lol I was LITERALLY just talking to @corpseauthority about the scene in Steven Universe where Peridot pulls the little alien shorts over her butt while giggling, and I found the post I made about it at the time)

Adora, Huntara, Bow, and Glimmer are poking around Mara's abandoned old ship, which has had most of its guts stolen for parts, but you can still hear Mara's voice saying "She-Ra. Etheria. Gone." It's spooky

(I assume this is a character name they were stuck with from the original series, and I've noticed they mostly avoid lampshading the goofy names but sometimes you just have to)

and the message cuts out and the room goes dark again.

Hi, I’m Bleu, and welcome to my other blog! This one’s simply to keep track of all my FoE stuff, as well as allow suggestions from outsiders as to how I should continue the story. Here’s a basic description and some rules (Please read the full post, if you have the time)

General Summary

15 year old Emberlyn Sharp has just lived through the worst year of her life. Her parents just got a divorce, her sister went off to college on the other side of the country, her best friend moved away, she has to spend every day in English literature sitting shoulder to shoulder with her god awful excuse of an “ex girlfriend,” and worst of all, strange, almost paranormal events have been happening all around town. People are waking up to their mailboxes dissolved into acidic black sludge. Completely unidentifiable plants are showing up everywhere. But worst of all, a mysterious crystal she found in the woods when she was little starts making these god-awful screeching noises every time she opens its case.

Conveniently, suspiciously, around this time, a rumor starts spreading around the school that hidden within the restricted section of the library, there rests an old book containing a spell that will send anyone unfortunate enough to read its pages to hell. Now, under normal circumstances, Emberlyn would pass these rumors as a load of bullcrap, but with all the weird, paranormal events going on around her, her curiosity can’t help but be sparked. So, with a fully-packed suitcase, her mysterious screaming rock, and some help from the other school designated weird girl, she brakes into the school, and makes her trip to the library at 10:00 o’clock at night.

Little did she know, all those rumors would turn out to be true. Well, minus the portal to hell part.

Instead of hell, the floor gives way to a completely new world. One that is undeniably beautiful, but torn to shreds by war, disease, and natural disasters. She is thrust headfirst into a wasteland of warring nations, a plague that causes people to grow poisonous flowers out of their bodies, shadow demons falling from the sun, colonialism, and a crooked world history built upon lies. All tracing back to a god amongst gods who calls herself Enselia, hell-bent on tearing this world to shreds. But why, if Enselia is the high celestial, a creature whose duty is to be the all-seeing-eye and protector of this place, be trying to destroy it? Why does she hate this place so much? And is she even supposed to be the high celestial all along? Well, this angry little lesbian and five other cool people wanted dead by god are about to find out!

Oh yeah, and that screaming rock of hers? Turns out it’s a sentient dagger with enough energy to cause the highest of high celestials to spontaneously combust! How fun :D

Planning

So, my plans for this absolute mess of a series is to make it into a webcomic series, and a rather expansive one at that! Yes, I did say series. I intend to make Fall of Enselia into a multi-volume series with a planned 6-7 books (not including side material.) I doubt it’ll ever go into print, but it still feels more natural to me to structure each page and book like a physical comic book, so sadly, you’re not getting any infinite scrolls from me. If you’re wondering where you’ll be able to find it, I’ll be posting each chapter on Webtoon under the username Im_Tired1124. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to keep a consistent update schedule, but my current plan is to try and post one chapter every two months once I get the storyboards, script, and plot nailed down. As of writing this, I’m still working on the storyboard and script for the prologue of book one. Though I’ve had this story slowly forming in my head for about 2-4 years now, I kind of did the thing where you write down nothing about your story, while planning out every book, character beat, villain motivation, animated spin-off, and anime opening for your story lol. It’s definitely not going to be out for a while, but my current plan is to, hopefully, get the prologue and first three chapters published in the timeframe of July-December of 2024. In the meantime, I’ll be using this account to publish concept art, reference sheets, work in progress, and lore notes while working on the main event. This story revolves heavily around different cultures and marginalized people trying to resist oppression and forced hegemony. However, I am fully aware that as a moderately culturally detatched half-Jamaican who hasn’t had to face too much racism or scrutiny for my appearance and cultural background, I can very easily screw things up. So, constructive criticism is always welcome ^•^

Genuinely, I have no problem with fan works, and I’d be absolutely overjoyed to see people engaging in my work in these ways! However I do still have standards within my ToS, so…

Spread misinformation about myself, my motives, the story, or other people I associate with just because you don’t like them. You have better things to do with your life, so stop making shit up and go outside. Don’t like, don’t engage.

For the love of Mangoes, under no circumstances is anyone allowed to make NSFW of my characters. Nope, not even the adults. Not only are most of the lead characters in FoE teenagers, but I also based there personalities and life experiences of of my own, as well as the experiences of friends and family of mine. Look, I hate to use the, “As a minor, this makes me uncomfortable,” card, but god damnit, as a minor this makes me real uncomfortable! Now, this ban may lift (AT LEAST ON ADULT CHARACTERS) once I get older, and am more comfortable with people interpreting my works that way, but right now, no. Don’t do it. Keep those ideas in the rough draft bin of your brain. That’s nasty. Don’t do it. Granted, I don’t have a problem with sexual humor in fan works, my sense of humor irl is already pretty… let’s just say, risqué, anyways, but as has already been established, don’t write or draw any of my characters getting it on.

Which was the first episode you ever watched? This immediately made you a fan?

Or which is your fav episode and why?

The first episode I remember watching was back when I was around five years old (I think). I was watching it on Cartoon Network in one of the few times I got to go on the channel (my mom wasn't a fan of CN or Nickelodeon, so at some point when I was 7 she scared me into avoiding the channels alltogether lol I was very dramatic growing up).

It was the episode "Hot Buttered Ed". The details of the episode REALLY stayed with me. The fact that Kevin took their spot by the lake, the depiction of the heat, the Eds transversing the top of the rocky hill, the way they get sunburnt at the end. Even though I wasn't an avid watcher of the network or the show, this really stuck with me! Seeing the episode now, I still enjoy it a lot. I like seeing the Eds camping in their yard. Very cute : )

Another episode I remember viscerally is the beginning portion of "Mirror Mirror, on The Ed." Specifically, the scene of the kids playing spin-the-bottle. The part where it is Jimmy's turn and Kevin dares him to give away his turn was so funny to me. Every time spin-the-bottle comed up as a subject, I think about that scene and Jimmy's "aw :(" of disappointment.

Neither of these episodes made me a "fan" though. Honestly, what made me a fan was when I decided I should watch the show on a whim and started on "The Edtouchables". It was so funny and down-to-earth in a really refreshing way despite it being now 25 years old (happy birthday!!!) I rewatched it some time ago, and it is still is really fun. Learning about it in tandem with how the show was pitched is so interesting to me as someone who wants to go into the field of animation.

As for the other question, selecting a favorite episode is super difficult. I love so many. I guess "Rent-a-Ed" is the one I rewatch the most. I just find the whole concept super funny, and the way the punchline expands is so good. Love it when the Eds doing one unconsequential thing leads to a bigger problem that ends with huge destruction. If I had to choose an episode to introduce the show to people, it would probably be that one. Other episodes I like are "Ed, Ed and Away" and "Don't Rain on My Ed". I like it when all three Eds are trying to reach a goal, and Murphy's Law is enacted. It is really funny. I dig how the show uses it as a way to explore the neighborhood. It's amazing how such a small location can feel so big depending on the context. "An Ed is Born" is also both narratively and technically fantastic. The storyboarding and cinematography are so complex, and it deepens a bit of Eddy's relationship with Bro. There is a lot to enjoy. (Plus, as a film buff, it tickles me seeing kids making home videos. I love that shit) Yeah, this is a huge list, sorry. It is really hard to choose. Hopefully, I can narrow it down soon.

hey libra! (it's libra right??) i already loved your elejah abortion fic but now that i've watched s4 and have context of the whole Cure nonsense that everyone was fighting over... like it's an even better fic now you did such a good job <3

if i didn't know better and expected anything from the vd writers i'd actually have thought the cure was just a metaphor for abortion and elena & rebekah's struggles was the metaphor for abortion rights lol. either way s4 is actually so chillingly relevant to 2022 society because it was literally so many episodes of just women being constantly stripped of agency and denied a choice by male characters :/ like at least elijah's motivations were pure even tho i disliked that he got to make the decision for a grown woman and "test" her... and klaus would have been genuinely inconvenienced by silas's manipulation and abuse if rebekah had been given the cure so i guess that's like, semi okay? (but also he was always selfish and mean when it came to rebekah regardless of whether he experienced harm to his well being or not)... and the salvatores were just awful lol like that torture ep made me so uncomfortable especially how elena seemed fine after having just experienced hours of abuse from her exboyfriends

My animosity towards the cure is unmatched, not just because I hate it as a concept and everything it turned the characters into but also because, like that fuckin little AI mf from t100 it refused to exit the show with any grace.

I'm currently working on storyboarding more of what did you bury? (my love letter to no humanity Elena + American Gothic) and there’s just so much wrong with s4 it’s honestly hard to know where to begin. The torture episode is horrifying for so many reasons but it also provides one of the most interesting and heartbreaking looks into Elena’s psych because it lets us actually see her rage at the Salvatore’s and honestly might be the last sighting of in- character Elena Gilbert we ever get.

Like people can disagree if they want but as far as I’m concerned anything an emotionless vampire says is the truth (at least their truth) they have no humanity, no care and no reason to lie. This is especially true for Elena in the torture ep, and it’s awful.

Plus what it reveals for the salv bros, both of them use this torture as an outlet for the frustration Elena’s caused them since she was forced- by them- to turn off her humanity (I mean, we been knew they were abusive but this is definitely the most outright moment). Also like- Caroline, Bonnie, Matt are just... fine with this. Like yeah Caroline leaves because she doesn’t wanna hear it but no one makes any move to stop it or question if this is really the way to go. (Bonnie get’s a pass here bc she’s being mind controlled and Elena ripped her throat open but- everyone else...)

The actual scene of her turning it back in is genuinely the most upsetting in the show to me. It’s like every subtle manipulation and mistreatment from the first four seasons turned up to 11 and its disgusting. Just seeing her, this fuckin eighteen year old girl that has lost everything, lose the last remaining thread to her childhood, to her life before the salvatores arrived. And the way she just shatters while they watch- this moment that’s horrifying and awful and they won’t ever let her go and she knows this and it means nothing to them. It’s just a tactic, something she’ll get over because she has no choice but too.

I hate it. (this hate being what made me write plastic crown in the first place lmao)

But yeah the whole things gross and this didn’t really build off your point even though I completely agree.

As for the Elijah/Rebekah/Klaus aspect, I do find the test situation to be more about Elijah insuring Rebekah is actually prepared for what taking the cure would mean. Still a bit icky and codependent but it’s the Mikaelsons so I don’t expect much else. I do love the energy of

ALRIGHT so I finished the rest of tgamm's S2 eps so far and to both test out this read more trick that I haven't learned how to use even after all these years and for everyone's convenience, my long thoughts will be in the read more.

My abridged thoughts, are that the eps were p good! Very solid batch all around and I'm sure the later eps will be just as fun, maybe even more! 👍!

Aaaaas for the longer thoughts, well they're not that longer tbh.

I was a bit. Hm. Not disappointed but more, surprised? I guess, that they focused a lot more on the main cast rather than some side character and their story but that's not a bad thing, I just find that some of my fav eps from S1 tended to do that tho! And thankfully, the writing like usual managed to be good enough that I didn't really think that much about it, while watching it.

Anyways, Scratch's backstory that was literally shown for less than a minute. OOOH. OHHH THAT WAS GOOD. LEGIT WAS SO GOOD. It perfectly captured that touching emotion that S1 had looooots of moments with. Also worth noting is that the soda was founded (I think?) in 1909, so Scratch probs isn't that old. Ooh man I hope the theories from way back about how his sailor themed memorabilia is actually for a purpose!

Oh yea, Scratch as chairman. Neat. Hm. Not bad, but hm. Just kinda neat I guess imo of course. Eh ya know what, now that I think about it, the show has been handling it rather well, its not an instant problem solver and it hasnt gotten in the way so far, yea its p neat. He spent the first half of the ep just being like "enjoy yourr afterliiiife [:○)" just to drift to "GET OUTTA MY HOUSE" and that was funny.

Oh yea and as always, the backgrounds were colorfully delightful, the voice acting was top knotch, the animation and different storyboard artists' styles were great and the music remains baller. Reaaaally hope it gets more appreciation this time around!

I FORGOT LOL Scratch's ass being plot relevant is fantastic. Like. Wow.

Sharon's episode was great!!!!!! I love the real emotion of unsure fear, uncertainty, but being able to overcome it due to support from loved one. GGGRHH THIS SHOW AND THE FAMILY WRITING WOO. They always nail it. Seriously I hope that this ep gets more recognition among fans.

Andrea's ep was also fun! Really stuck to their idea of her just being a bit misguided, not really mean hearted. I also love that they chose to talk about how convenient enterprises can unfortunately take over independent businesses and that it's up to the people to choose those independent businesses, not the corporate world.

Libby's ep was p fun! Very nice that she's getting more attention, and that they had an ep based on her love of her family library.

Molly overworked herself, again, but at least by the end she got to have fun 👍

Darryl's was p okay, definitely better than his last one, but I kinda feel like maybe Darryl also could have learned something? Buut then again he's just a kid and his parents accepting him for who he is, is a wonderful message so it all evens out :^).

As for the Chens, they're okay! I like June, autism blast has been deployed and that's rad. Ollie is okay, DEFINITELY overhated like geez he's literally just some guy. Granted, I'm not sure how this whole ghost hunter thing is gunna turn out tho. Considering that Scratch IS family, it makes for a neat obstacle I suppose.

And as for the thing that's been the main talk of recent, The Ship.

Reuben and Pete.

Gotta say it's p good, good on Pete.

Oh yea and molly and ollie is okay? I guess. Not really bad, not all that interesting imo tbh but it's really harmless. It clicks in a bit too much for my taste. Like Molly has been shown to be a bit too optimistic for people, then some guy shows up and is almost exactly like her. Ehhhh, again, not bad but some people DEFINITELY need to calm down, after all the show is mainly centered around the family and love between them, not romance. Just not my cup of milk ya know?

The actual in characters in the show, in their real life shipping them tho, was, hm. Don't. Don't quite know how to feel about that.

Pete and Reuben tho. C'mon.

Oh yea, new antagonist on the way too ig, he's voiced by Jeff Bennett so good for him!

Iiiii guess that's about it! Overall, p good batch! Hopefully the rest will be either just as good, or even better!
