Sarah Salvatore TO ME would’ve been a great example for the Salvatore brothers and the fans to realize how inserting themselves in someone’s life like for example Elena/Sarah can ruin things. That not listening to someone’s wants or needs does have consequences whether you mean well or not lol.

Here's the thing about Legacies

Like TVD, I think Legacies had the potential to be a supernatural power house like BTVS was before it but they were so stuck in the formula and doing what they'd always done before that they refused to take risks and apart of that was refusing to get rid of Julie Plec as a writer.

The TVDU was/is in desperate need of some new blood to actually take the series where it should've been taken.

Both TVD and Legacies biggest strengths were its female characters and how powerful they were capable of being but unfortunately Julie Plague had this disgusting habit of stripping them of their power just to hand it off to a male character to prop them up constantly.

She did this with Bonnie and Elena (& sometimes but not too much with Caroline) - stripping them entirely of their autonomy, turning them into a damsel in distress just so she could prop up the Salvatores.

I knew from the second it was announced Nina Dobrev was leaving the show that she was going to do with to Bonnie.

I'd hoped there would've been someone to stop her from this but I didn't hold my breath for it because we all know the TVDU writers room are just Julie Plex yes men.

Caroline was mostly spared from this (only finding herself in the whole damsel and distressing in the beginning of S01 and S07) but I think it's that way because Julie started using her as a self-insert for herself after S03 when she became oddly fixated with the Salvatore Brothers that creeped me out.

I think if I could change one thing about Legacies is make it more about female empowerment like Buffy always was. Get rid of all that stuff where they sacrifice all of Hope's storylines for ship stuff.

I mean, I love Landon and all his dorkiness. I mean I love Landon, all his dorkiness included.

But characters should be able to exist on their own without there being so reliant on who they are currently dating and that's the problem with Julie Plec. She cannot write a character without them being defined by who they are dating and she completely massacre's them when their already established as being interesting on their own and removes everything until there is nothing left but who they are in love with.

It makes me so angry that she does this and it's why I don't really accept anything that happened on TVD as cannon after she became the head writer.

if i didn't know better and expected anything from the vd writers i'd actually have thought the cure was just a metaphor for abortion and elena & rebekah's struggles was the metaphor for abortion rights lol. either way s4 is actually so chillingly relevant to 2022 society because it was literally so many episodes of just women being constantly stripped of agency and denied a choice by male characters :/ like at least elijah's motivations were pure even tho i disliked that he got to make the decision for a grown woman and "test" her... and klaus would have been genuinely inconvenienced by silas's manipulation and abuse if rebekah had been given the cure so i guess that's like, semi okay? (but also he was always selfish and mean when it came to rebekah regardless of whether he experienced harm to his well being or not)... and the salvatores were just awful lol like that torture ep made me so uncomfortable especially how elena seemed fine after having just experienced hours of abuse from her exboyfriends

My animosity towards the cure is unmatched, not just because I hate it as a concept and everything it turned the characters into but also because, like that fuckin little AI mf from t100 it refused to exit the show with any grace.

I'm currently working on storyboarding more of what did you bury? (my love letter to no humanity Elena + American Gothic) and there’s just so much wrong with s4 it’s honestly hard to know where to begin. The torture episode is horrifying for so many reasons but it also provides one of the most interesting and heartbreaking looks into Elena’s psych because it lets us actually see her rage at the Salvatore’s and honestly might be the last sighting of in- character Elena Gilbert we ever get.   

Like people can disagree if they want but as far as I’m concerned anything an emotionless vampire says is the truth (at least their truth) they have no humanity, no care and no reason to lie. This is especially true for Elena in the torture ep, and it’s awful. 

Plus what it reveals for the salv bros, both of them use this torture as an outlet for the frustration Elena’s caused them since she was forced- by them- to turn off her humanity (I mean, we been knew they were abusive but this is definitely the most outright moment). Also like- Caroline, Bonnie, Matt are just... fine with this. Like yeah Caroline leaves because she doesn’t wanna hear it but no one makes any move to stop it or question if this is really the way to go. (Bonnie get’s a pass here bc she’s being mind controlled and Elena ripped her throat open but- everyone else...)

The actual scene of her turning it back in is genuinely the most upsetting in the show to me. It’s like every subtle manipulation and mistreatment from the first four seasons turned up to 11 and its disgusting. Just seeing her, this fuckin eighteen year old girl that has lost everything, lose the last remaining thread to her childhood, to her life before the salvatores arrived. And the way she just shatters while they watch- this moment that’s horrifying and awful and they won’t ever let her go and she knows this and it means nothing to them. It’s just a tactic, something she’ll get over because she has no choice but too.

I hate it. (this hate being what made me write plastic crown in the first place lmao)

But yeah the whole things gross and this didn’t really build off your point even though I completely agree. 

As for the Elijah/Rebekah/Klaus aspect, I do find the test situation to be more about Elijah insuring Rebekah is actually prepared for what taking the cure would mean. Still a bit icky and codependent but it’s the Mikaelsons so I don’t expect much else. I do love the energy of

Stefan: wants revenge on Klaus for the shit he pulled on him, even going as far as to almost drive the love of his life off of Wickery Bridge. Knowing that that her parents almost died and where she almost died.

Fandom: Stefan has every right to hate Klaus!!! He didn’t actually do it!!! His humanity was off (it was on and yes he was dealing with the guilt and pain, but I’m not gonna go dismiss my baby girl’s trauma either).

Tyler: wants revenge on Klaus for killing him, forcing him into becoming a hybrid, making him into his slave, forced him to bite his gf, killed his mother (aka his last living family member) because Tyler dared to save innocent hybrids from being sired, killed his pack, and drove him out of his hometown. Tearfully leaves because while he loves Caroline, he doesn’t want to live under a psychopath’s thumb and wants justice. Keep in mind that he didn’t abuse Caroline in the process unlike something a certain Salvatore brother did to the love of his life.

Fandom: T-Tyler is such a dick! He chose revenge over Caroline! He hates Klaus more than he loves Caroline! How dare he not grieve the way his girlfriend wanted him to! Klaus/Stefan would never!

I hate the addition/explanation to the sire bond lore that we got was so horrible. I like it better as something that just happened rarely. I couldve been so intrested to see they power dynamics of a sire bond within a relationship but no they had to say that sire bonds exist because the human was in love with the vampire that turned them. And like even that is something you can poke holes in. Like if they wanted to make soulmates make ‘em. It was in the book. Because if you think abt sire lines too hard it don’t make sense. Like Tyler ain’t know that man from Adam when he became that mans first hybrid and his first sired hybrid. Imma poke a hole in the whole you have to have pre existing feelings for the vampire to become sired because we’ve had multiple examples where that wasn’t true and multiple examples where humans had feelings for the vampire that turned them and didn’t become sired so that ain’t canon to me.

Another crazy thing is Julie Plec saying Bonnie is too good for Kol and that he's too evil for her, then pairing him with a white witch.... (no hate to Davina, but if he's irredeemable for Bonnie, then he’d irredeemable for Davina, too)

It's crazy because she also paired Bonnie with Enzo, a vampire who if I'm not wrong did abuse/kinda terrorize her friends, maybe not to the extent Klaus or Damon did but regardless (only if my memory serves me right; I don't remember much from Enzo, hence why I'm currently rewatching season five.)

Kol literally killed Davina and we're supposed to buy he's the better choice for her? Whether you're mind controlled or not, having your blood sucked out of your body by your boyfriend would leave a scarr for sure and the fact that Davina never got any trauma from it is insane. Bonnie went through worse stuff every season, of course, but she was never allowed to show any emotion onscreen, especially if it was against her white friends.

Saying Bonnie is "too pure" or has "too strong morals" to be with any Mikaelson or Salvatore is just stupid and clearly wrong. Elena and Caroline hated Damon and Klaus, until they didn't, it's easy to see women are being constantly retconned to fit into this shows storylines yet no one ever bats an eye until it comes to the main black woman from The Vampire Diaries.

And this isn't just with romances either. Fans believe Bonnie would hate Rebekah, when there isn't literally any proof to corroborate this and they haven't even interacted, they think she would hate Hope for being a Mikaelson when Bonnie has never been that kind of person. They're desperate to prove she's an anti vampires or generally a prude simply because she's traumatized and rightfully so. She decides to not be nice to the Salvatore brothers in season one after they got her grandmother killed and she's turned into some sort of supervillain because of it.

If Bonnie's actress had been white, I'm pretty sure her character and bloodline would have been in Mikaelson level by the show and fandom.

ok this ask might be all over the place, it feels more like multiple asks tbh, but I’m watching supernatural (for the first time) and some of your posts have been coming to mind. the time old “who else could have played damon?”, or “how would you have written damon?” asks. and your breakdown of the brothers’ chemistry compared to defan.

essentially jensen’s portrayal of dean has me comparing to damon on occasion. acting-wise I feel jensen brings out aspects of dean that damon was meant to have. similarly to your comparisons to chuck/klaus/jack sparrow, dean has a charisma, but I specifically feel that jensen manages to pull off damon type humour, and “guy’s guy” “ladies man” type bravado without me wanting to roll my eyes. i think it’s partly because he doesn’t take himself too seriously? supernatural let’s dean be the butt of the joke, without taking away from his character while tvd tries to be like “*sigh* damon being damon”, but without committing? i think it could have really worked to have a through line or bit of everyone be like “*sigh* DAMON” when he’s being “damon” (almost xander like lol). it’s not enough to hold him accountable but it might have worked as levity/acknowledgement of damon within the group dynamic? many of dean’s character flaws align with damon’s, but i feel like it’s better portrayed through dean? i’m just curious what you might think regarding dean vs damon or how jensen might portray aspects of damon?

tbh there’s more that I want to ask/discuss/hear your thoughts on regarding the brother dynamics and dean’s writing compared to tvd, but this feels messy and long enough lmao. I’m only on S2, and i don’t mind spoilers, but I don’t know how my thoughts will hold up regarding the show’s writing so… possibly more supernatural asks to come (if you don’t mind discussing it).

I don't mind discussing it at all, but again, my knowledge of the show is limited, like seasons 1-5 and I could maybe talk a bit about seasons 6 and 7, I just know anons got really passionate when I spoke about SPN before because there's, like, vehement anti-Dean or anti-Sam rhetoric on tumblr -- one anon told me once that they used to like me until I said that I liked Dean when I watched Supernatural so they had to unfollow me -- like I just went through both tags, which was interesting just because of how passionately the fandoms are, and I don't take the show seriously enough to argue that passionately about it so I'm saying this more for other anons than for you.

In terms of Dean/Damon, I have a post that discusses the parallels/similarities between Dean and Stefan actually in terms of character (although Stefan is not as overbearing as Dean, he's just relentlessly sacrificial for Damon and Stefan doesn't have a misogyny problem) and I briefly state how in terms of personality Damon is a less charming Dean

and so Jensen is effortless as Dean and I think that goes a long way, I think people underestimate what an actor at least making it seem like they're effortlessly charming and charismatic does for a character, Dean is anything but a subtle character but Jensen made subtle choices with Dean and that's why he can pull off the 'guy's guy' bravado, the posturing, the humour

and Damon is just infuriating because Ian tries too hard

and when Jensen is "bigger" it's for very specific comic reasons

But I think for me, it's less about Dean being the butt of the joke and more about the way Jensen and the show demonstrate his layers, good and bad, and how things can be looked at from another perspective

so it digs into the darker aspects of his personality,

his fears and insecurities

or his secret desires

because they show what the bravado is trying to cover up and Jensen is good at demonstrating the vulnerabilities that Dean has or the darkness that Dean has and it's more complicated than I kill and/or harm innocent people when women reject me or tell me that I can be a better person, like Damon just did not have to do this

but Elena hugged him and that was too much pressure so, you know, Jessica's gotta die.

And then they do things with his character retroactively that Dean's character was built on from Day One, so now, all the way in season 6 suddenly Damon was protective of Stefan with Giuseppe when they were growing up and did everything he could to protect him from his ire and Stefan never really saw that side of Giuseppe

When that doesn't really add up with what we saw in season 1?

there’s nothing that suggests that Stefan was the golden son while Damon was cast off —  Giuseppe being disappointed in Damon for being a deserter is actually just typical, it would be more surprising if he wasn’t disappointed — but Giuseppe was stern and distant with them both and trusted both of them with the same information and killed both of them in equal measure

whereas from the moment we meet Dean, he's carrying Sam as a child out of a fire,

and again as an adult

it's drilled into his head, into our head that his number one priority, his number one job is taking care of Sam,

which is why he goes to hell for him, not a supernatural limbo with a friend where he thinks he's being tortured by reliving the day he murdered a bunch of pregnant women because his brother was accurate about him and he makes blueberry pancakes as atonement,

no, he was literally ripped to shreds by hellhounds

and sent to hell because he couldn't let Sam die

and comes back traumatized and also with another layer to his personality because it turned out he was really good at torturing in hell so that's more guilt added to the already substantial guilt he carried and again, this protection and love for Sam is also codependence, which is problematic

So, like, his narrative is more complicated than Damon's and Jensen's acting is better and he has a natural charisma.

It is pretty interesting to see how Caroline slowly evolved into Plec’s self insert character. I mean she’s basically had a thing with every eligible guy in the show. Damon, Matt, Tyler, Klaus, Enzo (flirtation), Stefan, and Alaric. The only one she missed was Jeremy who always felt like too much of a “little brother” to be taken seriously as a love interest (probably the reason his and Bonnie’s relationship felt so chaste).

Is it interesting? I'm not sure what you mean. In season 1, Caroline was like the cliché pretty, blonde, popular girl with low self-esteem, always passed up for the prettier "not like other girls" girl next door Elena. She wanted Stefan but he didn't want her, she was raped and used by Damon, who didn't care about her in the slightest so it wasn't really having a "thing" with him, and she liked Matt who was Elena's ex. All the guys she liked at first liked Elena better or used to be with Elena. Then, after Caroline became a vampire, and also more popular on the show I assume, they gave her more proper love interests, such as Tyler and Klaus. This happened naturally since Matt was a human and she wasn't anymore so their relationship organically came to an end after a couple of seasons. Plus, Tyler's last love interest had been Vicki back in season 1, and Klaus liking Caroline made him more likable (and there was the Tyler/Klaus sire drama to capitalize on). I'm not sure how any of this makes Caroline a self-insert character.

As for Enzo, he also dated Bonnie. You have to remember there were only 3 lead female characters on TVD and a lot of men. Enzo liked Caroline probably to show she was a catch and that Stefan should notice her. Also, Caroline liked Stefan who didn't notice her at first and that fed into Enzo's hatred of Stefan in season's 5 and 6, so Enzo liking Caroline served that purpose. Also, I never took Enzo's feelings for Caroline very seriously. He was just a loyal person who admired Caroline's kindness and loyalty - she reminded him of the woman he used to love, the one Damon killed. They had nice chemistry too.

Anyway, once Stefan and Elena were finally over, he needed another love interest. The writers had the choice to either bring someone new in or choose between Bonnie and Caroline. Since Bonnie was already with Jeremy and generally anti-vampires, but Caroline was single and already close to Stefan, she was the obvious choice (also, it came full circle from season 1).

As for Alaric, after Candice got pregnant they had to get creative. In seasons 7 and 8 she was pretty much the Elena of the show, and since Stefan had a thing with another girl, I guess Alaric ended up with Caroline. But the point was that neither Stefan nor Caroline wanted to be with someone else only with each other.

There's mostly a reason for all of Caroline's love interests, such as her being one of the three female leads on the show and Elena already being taken by the Salvatore brothers. If you don't ignore the context of these relationships, they all developed naturally so I fail to see how that makes Caroline a self-insert character. I think she was the most self-insert-y between seasons 4 and 6 with the big bad Klaus liking only her and Stefan realizing she was great, but did that make her any different from Elena? It's a teen drama, so "self-insert" characters are bound to exist to some extent - in fact, they exist in most shows.

I also don't think Bonnie and Jeremy's relationship felt that chaste. It wasn't much different from Jeremy's relationships with Vicki or Anna. I just think the actor wasn't great and didn't have great chemistry with anyone.

"Damon deserves better than Elena"

bonnie pushed back the hellfire from mystic falls back into the maxwell bell, back to hell itself, mystic falls was saved from it’s once prophecied complete annilation that once doomed our matt donovan from his demonic roots. he did not become the anti-christ like he was born for. having closed the hellmouth gate entirely, matt’s powers were ultimately severed from it’s source, thus making him weaker and lost most of his cambion abilities bare a weak few. his powers stemming from a mixture of his unique blood as well as a connection toa hellmouth itself. with cade dead, it is also revealed that he is not, the actual devil but instead, had been given that role as the king of hell whilst lucifer was freed to roam whenever he wanted. it is unclear if matt could regain his powers and resume his fate to become the anti-christ or next king of hell, but he has choses against it. rejecting predetermined ideas about his future. his mothers soul, returned to be damned by hell and his sister vicki, finally is allowed to find peace in the afterlife, having only been held in hell as something to hold against and manipulate matt. it is unclear now where lucifer is and if he is coming to meet matt himself.

after the gate closes, matt came to the realisation that mystic falls itself, was his own personal hell and he was actally, much happier away from his hometown despite feeling loyalty to a town that had only made him sad his entire life. with the death of tyler, matt cannot stand to be in mystic falls without his best friend and thus post series, he moves to persue a career in becoming a PI DECTIVE, to use the remaining gifts and his extensive gathered knowledge of the supernatural world, to help those in need so that never again, people would hopefully not feel the way he did when his sister first died and he didn’t believe her about vampires.

and thus, matt grows colder and distant to his friends, especially after stefan’s funeral. that was the last real time all of his friens were together. having moved across the states, now persuing his PI career, over the years, matt slowly started to visit mystic falls less and less. only for important ocassion’s such as lizzie and josie’s birthdays. though now having a perminant home in sanfransico, matt is dotted around the country on case by case calls or to offer his assitence in cases he suspects has supernatural orgin/basis.

when matt does decide to vist town, it’s usually because he’s someplace near home, visiting his step-mother and younger half-brother. matt also, has adopted a young teenager named nolan, who was left orphaned after one of his first few cases went seriously wrong. though very busy, matt has found solace in having someone he can call his family again having lost so much. in a lot of ways, his son’s own life parallels parts of his own and his best friend tyler’s and thus, couldn’t leave him. matt will sometime let nolan stay for short times at the salvatore school to mingle with other kids so he knows the distincition between good and bad supernatural creates. 

matt, if he has the time, will also teach classes on detective work for students who are interested with the permission of the current headmaster. he is still very close with dorian also as they game online sometimes

okay but like the fact that damon acts as if katherine victimized him and uses her "mistreatment" of him to rationalize his bad actions is so repulsive tho?? like my dude my buddy my guy you literally begged katherine to turn you and the fact that you murdered a bunch of people afterwards isn't her fault, it's not like she forced you to do anything or used a sirebond to control your actions lol. vicki's death is damon's fault. every single murder d*mon ever comitted is damon's fault.

and like this man is so pathetic and petty and spiteful that he tortured katherine, a dying woman, by basically victim-shaming her at a point where she was vulnerable and fragile, forcing her to relive the trauma of her family's death, and claiming that it was her fault??? just leave her alone already ffs

Over a thousand year span there's a myth. A myth of vampires witches and werewolves. Are they really yes, but to most if the world they're fiction made up. The origin of vampires is complicated and a long story. It also brings up memories that I never want to relive so here's the short version. A thousand years ago a woman and her husband lost a child to a plague. The woman went to her trusted friend who told her of a mystical land. A land where there were men who turned into beasts. They would be known in the new world as werewolves. The woman and her husband moved there and had six more children, their names were Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik. Then there was a witch the witch was the one who told the woman and her husband about the mystical land. Her name was Anaya Bennett, she was my mother, as well as my protector. She was only trying to live. Her name was Katerina Petrova or as she's now known Katherine Peirce. I have a child by Elijah, his brother. I had her during the 1900s. 1907 to be exact. I wasn't ready to be a mother and the only person who knows about her is my sister Rebekah, who's wanted children for a thousand years so I let her raise her. I became the aunt to my daughter. She got put under a sleeping spell and well..... She didn't wake up for a while, so when she woke up I put an anti-ageing spell on her. Rebekah fell in love with him but Mikael ruined it as always. We had to flea and Nik daggered Rebekah so I had to take Roselind back to England for a while. When Rebekah woke she asked for her to turn her so we did after a bunch of convincing. She was still hidden last I checked and Rebekah was giving me updates when she could.
