Still thinking about a Star trek TOS Firefly au. So I'm gonna have fun writing it out.

I love the dynamic between Mal, Zoe, and Wash, so that's certainly becoming the triumvirate. Mal > Jim, Zoe > Spock, Wash > Bones. However Wash's job doesn't make sense for Bones so he's going to change to doctor.

Jim was on Tarsus 4 and suffered the same as in canon, famine leads to who lives lottery and he wasn't chosen but survived anyway. I think that makes perfect sense in the Firefly universe too, but I think unlike in trek Kodos is celebrated by the federation in Firefly for making tough choices and leading in a strong way. So he's not on the run, he's a constant background side threat who's still in power. The face of the federation in this version, but not the head of it. You feel me

After Tarsus, Jim and Bones met and became mates. I think Bones moved to a big fancy planet for his wife and child after a bit. In the meant time, we have Spock!

Spock is the result of eugenic experiments (there's no aliens in Firefly 😢) like the serenity thing that the og story is about (but generational eugenics not brain poking)(because I want there to be many others, just also in hiding and with their own political factions and opinions) but his resulted in Vulcan-like stuff. I think he's still got the pointy ears and has excessively strong emotions that he's learnt to hide completely cos he was raised in a medical facility by cold scientists instead of parents and love. There's schools of thought about them, some want to integrate, some want them exterminated, some want them to form their own society. The federation stance is these eugenic things don't exist and if you see one kill it because it officially doesn't exist. So Spock is forced into hiding and hasn't really had a chance to form his broader opinion, cos it's academic anyway. They're all hiding now.

So, Spock's escaped (more on that later) and in hiding. He meets Jim and they click, probably meeting in some silly battle. I reckon Spock has ways to get away from the feds that Jim wants to learn, so Jim pushes for them to team up. They spend some time together either on someone else's ship or on a smaller ship just them two.

After a while that comes to an end and they put together a crew and buy a ship together. They hire Sulu and Chekhov who are a criminal team who need to get off this rock very fast please. Chekhov can fly wonderfully and has enough engineering knowledge that they're like hey we maybe don't need someone in the engine room!

Sulu is a jack of all trades. It takes a few months for them to realise how useful he is, he always has a skill they need and always knows someone who'll play as a contact. Absolutely invaluable.

Eventually the engine breaks beyond Chekhov's skill to fix and they've all heard of Scotty. Everyone knows about Scotty. I think this would make a good episode one.

They work Sulu's contacts and find Scotty who is, lo and behold, having a drink with his mate disgraced Doctor McCoy. Spock, immediate dislike, this guy is a doctor. Jim, holy shit! Bones! Why the fuck aren't you emailing me back!?

Turns out Bones has gotten divorced and threw a bit of a fit in a hospital and can't work on a core planet anymore. He agrees to join the crew and Scotty has some issue that forms most of the episode plot and joins too cos hey, crims gotta keep moving

The ep ends with meeting Uhura, who manages a lot of the residual resistance movement's comms. She's the most political of the bunch, but Jim is absolutely in agreement and so chuffed to meet her even tho he's never been too war-y before. Scotty and Sulu already know her. She takes a kind of Inara role on the ship, but she's not companioning, she's boosted the comms in the shuttle and is continuing this work. It's great for her cos she gets to move around and be hard to catch, and it's great for the ship cos it gives them access to loads of underground people who aren't the hated federation

I also think she helped Spock break out back in the day. I'm not sure if she was part of it and they've met, or if she helped run things so she knows Spock but he doesn't know her. She's gonna be their reason for getting accidentally involved in larger things in the story and why they get more altruistic with their jobs. Spock also pulls them into some of the eugenic stuff

I reckon episode two needs some Spock eugenic stuff to happen so that Bones can solidify himself as on team Spock in action even if he has a go at Spock. Cos everyone else follows Jim's orders and Jim is team Spock, so I think Bones needs a chance to prove it. To great danger to himself ofc.

Repeat characters (like in Firefly they have Badger and Saffron who rock up as major non crew characters) are Chapel and Rand. I think Chapel is still on a core planet as a nurse. I would have her join the crew in season two, to look for her missing husband. But in season one she can be an insider informant for the hospital heist episode, which they do mainly for the medical equipment cos Bones has like nothing to treat people with. And maybe Spock has some additional medical needs that Bones needs to learn (Spock hates this)

Rand is like a bit of Saffron energy but less totally untrustworthy. I think she works them for her benefit but in a way where when they meet again they're like hey Janice you're not allowed on the ship but it's great to see you! Like, maybe she hijacks them to get her somewhere or stows away super inconveniently. Or maybe she just steals from them old school style and has a very all's fair in love and war vibe about it. She just doesn't hold any resentment, so it's hard to resent her

If I were to cast this show I'd cast Bones and Jim and women because I think it needs more women, might as well put them in positions of power, and honestly I think Spock's character with the emotional repression and all would change being cast as a woman whereas the others wouldn't. Spock's character in this is gonna be playing into stereotypes and expectation to stay in hiding, and those change as a woman

I've definitely got less tension on board than Firefly. There's no Jayne equivalent making life hard for everyone, but you could write an arc in for Chekhov like that if you wanted to. He could go from disliking the danger Spock and Uhura bring to absolutely admiring them over like two seasons. Could be interesting, but it's not got much to do with trek really

There's no shipboard romance here either. There could be something cool in the Scotty/Uhura that happened later in trek canon. Maybe they've got romantic history, so when she joins the ship there's tension and they just fall into bed together pretty quickly. But I'd only put that in if it added something else to the story, which it might! I'm not actually writing, I'm brainstorming

And similar to what the did in Firefly I think Spock/Bones makes the most sense. Cos we don't need proof that Spock and Jim understand each other, they're captain and first officer. They have each other's back absolutely. And similarly with Jim and Bones, they'd have old loyalty and friendship to draw on. And I think they also just obviously get along. But Spock and Bones could do with some plot prodding along, so I'd do something like the Simon/Kaylee romance where there's tension and clear desire but they're bad at making it happen. There's too much in the way. But it adds reason for Bones to have Spock's back (cos we're coming at at the start of their friendship, not years into their five years mission) and you can occasionally see Spock relaxing the emotional wall with someone other than Jim as he develops more serious a crush

I want to see! The Niska episode where Jim and Spock get nicked and tortured, and Bones goes in to trade for them back. He can only afford one but true to the Empath ep he just trades himself and volunteers for the torture.

I also want to see a Jaynestown style ep where Scotty or Sulu are the hero. I think probably Scotty. He'd be easy to write as selfish in a he only cares about tech kinda way and then to find that he accidentally did this would be funny. He also likes to keep a low profile generally so it's extra hilarious

Hospital heist ep, with Chapel cameo. I don't think anyone's handing Spock over to the feds, but maybe they get caught and Chekhov tries to trade Spock for their freedom? Not in a pre planned malicious, but more that he just doesn't prioritise Spock's safety over everyone else's. He sees it as a last ditch leverage effort, for the greater good. Could be good drama

Saffron style ep with Rand but she steals from them. I do think that's hilarious, showing them be the mark. And I'd let her win, leave them stranded without whatever thing it is she fleeced and having to find a new magical tech engine bit. But hey she left some booze as an apology and made out with Jim so it's not too bad

OHHHH this is such a good question okay okay okay. let's see.

what do i look for? primarily, kon having an actual character voice. that's the lowest bar to clear (and yet already takes out... a good chunk of the fics ive seen in the kon character tag 😭😭). he needs to be silly, geeky, deeply kind, earnest, etc. not every fic featuring him will necessarily get into the way he's also existentially lonely and has a Lot of sadness and self-esteem issues (esp after rex leech's roller coaster incident. this has been on my mind today. ough. his self-image never recovered after that one!) but by GOD does he have his issues, so if its a fic going into emotions i want it to do right by his. will def admit thats smth im incredibly picky about.

as for stuff i want him doing? honestly i am here for so much!! i want soft simple character studies. i want action showcasing how fucking powerful ttk can be, especially with a dose of creativity to its use. i want wacky yj space adventures. i want good good whump and hurt/comfort. i want him getting swept off his feet. you could sell me on almost any plot if it's well-written.

re: characteristics... i don't really split them up quite like that, i think! he's a well-rounded character, and that includes both strengths and flaws. ideally, a good fic will include both of these and represent them fairly (like, he's not perfect by any means, and he can do stupid things and struggle with personal issues, but on the other hand very few things tick me off more than portrayals where he's just completely incompetent and dumb as a rock, lmao).

BUT REGARDING MY OWN WRITING. ohhohoohoohooho three things i ALWAYS have to include? a) geek-ass loser (affectionate). i think it is SO endearing and also very humanizing as a quality that he's a trekkie/wendy fan/star wars nerd/etc. b) mixed-race metaphors. they may not be overt depending on the piece but the "child of two worlds that doesn't quite fit into either" thing is Deeply intentional. and c) HES A JUGGERNAUT!!!! i firmly believe adult fully realized kon (a kryptonian, with full kryptonian powers, WITH TTK) is a force of fucking nature. i like this so much and i specifically also always like it when he is at any given moment about 0.4 seconds from freaking the fuck out about how it's Too much strength.

to me, kon is a character made of some very delicious contradictions. he's so painfully human and yet grapples hard with his own personhood and humanity. he's a kryptonian and an alien but he's a child of earth. he's terrified of his own power. he wants nothing more than to protect everyone he loves (and everyone he doesn't love, too). he's always ready to crack a joke or make a silly reference, but he is deeply sad and spent so much of his early life suicidal. he contains multitudes. (and this isn't even getting into my hcs on his gender/sexuality crisis! ksjdhf)

i feel like a gripe i often find myself having when looking for kon fics is that he often gets slotted into the role of "emotional support boyfriend with no personality or role of his own" though, which i guess is why "does he have a distinct character voice?" is my first litmus test for whether i'd want to keep reading or not.

a good kon fic will embrace all his contradictions, i think. (a good fic for any character, really, should show them as well-rounded and three-dimensional.) and i for one love his Problems and Issues, bc man, it's a very fun space to play in! <3

HEHEHEHEHH OF COURSE!!! and the reason for that is probably bc i haven’t posted very many details about them!! most of my rambles have been contained to dms with two of my friends and a currently 2.4k word doc of word and idea vomit 👍

anything posted before the most recent ask hasn’t been tagged correctly either, iirc i had a brief summary of the group a while ago though, tagged with “nightcord wxs” i think?? cause i didn’t have a name for them yet at the time. not changing it cause i’ve figured out more stuff since then so it’s sort of outdated. there’s probably a few posts lost in the marlo’s stuff tag, though that i didn’t tag properly but it’s okay those rambles are probably somewhere in my google doc.

anyway, since you didn’t rlly specify something in particular i’m probably just gonna ramble about whatever comes to mind. once again under the cut cause i can tell this is probably gonna get a bit long:

hollow ☆ wonderland is an online music group, and their videos are like kikuo style ones. but not necessarily ones like you are a useless child and aishite, more ones like and then you became the moon, welcome to the star inn, don’t look at me in that way, etc. pretty cutesy and happy sounding with a cute art style and then the lyrics tell a pretty dark story. that’s their general vibe. there’s a few songs i associate with them like judas by abuse (like i mentioned before) but i can’t confidently say it’s the kind of music they’d make. maybe that’ll change though we’ll see.

the group is composed of hoshi (tsukasa) the main lyricist, koki (emu), the artist, tako (rui) the animator and eventual co-lyricist, and kurage (nene), the composer.

they’re all silly online friends who like making music videos together and while none of them really talk about their issues pre-main story given that they’re not super close/don’t know each other super well yet, they still enjoy doing this together and care at least a little bit about each other.

i’m still figuring out how exactly the main story goes, but i’ve definitely made more progress now so HOPEFULLY i figure out a coherent story soon. i rlly do want to write a fic for them but don’t get your hopes up too much.

a few basic ideas i do have currently are some stuff like tsukasa, despite also being on his last hopes like the rest of them, is going to be the one to really encourage them all to start theater again. their sekai is a rundown theme park with lots of fireflies around, all the plushies are still there but they’re also worn down and have lots of patches and stuff on them. wonder stage has been closed down already, but it hasn’t been like torn down or replaced with a new attraction or anything. will it make a comeback? will hw be using it? we will see :)

i think the world hasn’t even started yet is still gonna be their untitled too. i’m thinking for their unit fits it’s gonna be something similar to the circus jester set cards? or at least the face paint thing. i’m absolutely giving them the face paint thing. and then there’s some other plot ideas i have but i’m not totally sure about them yet and i dunno how much sense they make on their own so i’m not gonna add them here.

uh. tsukasas name is hoshi since it means star iirc? so obviously he gets that name. koki meant something like to glitter, to shine, and i think emu would have liked that enough to choose it. and i already mentioned why rui and nenes names are what they are 👍

raised with manners, so they're very respectful. especially of their elders and women. they don't eat first when elders are present, they offer assistance with tasks ( normally being the first to jump to help someone ), they tend to offer to listen to someones worries, etc.

since their power is based on internal balance an yin and yang, they can be found doing a lot of activities around campus to clear their mind from time to time. ranging from yoga in the morning, to sketching, jogging, endurance workouts, forcing themself to relax, and burning incense. think uncle iroh but as a modern day, 23 year old college student. when their energy ( chi ) isn't balanced, they experience disharmony, a very tiring process that causes the typical results of disharmony except ... personified. so gender switching to female, being depressed, stressed and anxious with tummy issues ( normal hot girl sh*t imo ) all at the same time and against their will etc.

contrary to how i explain them, they are not as calm, collected nor as wise as uncle iroh. they more so have the personality of zuko, around when he started being hot and also sokka. so sarcastic, awkward, still a hot head, playfully, clumsy, and always cracking a joke or two. the vibes of a beloved leader that probably shouldn’t be leading.

they're wanderlust coded. i have this weird headcanon of them, where its a day off and they just turn off their phone at night and go for a walk in the city and just exist, looking at the city lights, sitting and looking at the river, grabbing ice cream even though its cold out side and then eventually heading back to the dorms as if they didn't just disappear for a few hours without a word. they definitely do this often too, while eating some cheap buy buy one get one snack they bought at the a convenience store.

despite how they may act sometimes, they love skinship; on that note, physical touch & quality time are their love languages.

silly but their side of the dorm follows the rules of feng shui and they’d probably playfully nag their roommate ( or any friend really ) to let them just to rearrange one of their things so their stuff fits in the room a little better.

following the ( TW ) death of their grandmother, they fell into the deepest depression and stopped wearing the patch for a while, ( no longer than a month ). the extremely negative emotions they faced kept them female the entire time, but soon enough they caught feelings for someone. feeling happier, they started the went back on the patch again. in the crudest tldr; they got their heart broken pretty badly. they decided to go off of the nullivi patch one last time after falling head over heels for a normal person. the showed them their ability, and just to be completely truthful about who they were, they shifted. it backfired pretty quickly and they were shunned, shamed and rejected. this is one incident they still struggle with letting go, and it currently affects how they view / form relationships.

they don't hate nullivi but they don't like it either. it messes with their internal balance which can make it tough to use their powers later and requires a pretty strict regimen when off of nullivi to balance their energies again.

They actively seek connections. They’d give anything to connect and have someone understand them, deeply and intrinsically without feeling like they’re being judged for who they are. They want to be able to open up and have someone see them for them; for whats really the inside and not just whats the outside, no matter what form they may take.

CRUSH : it starts with those shy glances across the room and before they know it , all of a sudden all of the songs they listen to were about your muse. for some reason, your muse has caught jinsol's eye. your muse gives them butterflies, hope even, but they don't call it a crush for nothing. ( possible routes: unrequited & requited ) SPRING FLING : what you had was quick and fun, and meaningless. in the end, there was a clear agreement from both sides that it was no strings attached, hence a clean break was expected. so why does it feel weird watching you walk by them without a word? and why does it sting to see you with someone else? THE DREADED GROUP PROJECT : lets be real, no one in this group ever really liked each other. Since the start of the semester they've kept a pretty good distance from each other, but despite their best efforts, this year they share a class and even worse they've been partnered together for a group project. their final grade is literally dependent on them working together and fast. will they do suck it up long enough to pass ? ( 0 / 2 ) A RIVAL : no need for formalities here. this is someone they just can't seem to see eye to eye with. your muse is someone who sees their presence as a threat and/or vice versa. it could be a friendly rivalry, or a genuine grudge filled feud. whatever it is, bring on the angst ! ( * would be great for rival muses in other rally houses ) TRAINER: someone they can honestly throw down with. as a member of samjoko, they're constantly trying to find new ways to use their abilities to their advantage. whether its through regular hand to hand combat or testing the limits of their powers, they crave the power to propel samjoko's reputation further and feel like its their sole responsibility to harness said power. EX: a recent ex that broke them / or / the person they broke . the first person they sorta came out to about everything. their playlist has to be full of sad-ish songs for a reason right? this person is the reason, the reason for their glow up in public, and glow down in private. the break up could've been they're fault, could've been the other persons. all they know is... they hate that they still think about your muse as often as they do. OTHERS : fellow members of samjoko, other residents in blue dorm, the usual fwb/ewb, enemies, childhood friend, friend groups, acquaintances, roommate etc connections. maybe people in the same major/classes, or another club of some kind?

okay so. HEAR ME OUT. the villianization of cdream was always a little too much. DONT GET ME WRONG— he was very much a villian and a little freak but people would stress “he’s abusing a child” soooo freaking much and the cwilbur existed prancing around like the freak he is and NO ONE EVVVERRRR brought up the child abuse with him. he employed his little brothers and his son into war. he made them child soldiers. SO HE COULD SELL DRUGS. he waged war with children fighting for him SO HE COULD SELL DRUGS. and everyone was like awww ccrime so cute and I’m like boy ur all crying cdream child abuse and then love wil so much what the hell. Anyway I’ve always been into cwilburs wow he really sucks-ness because I’m such a cfundy stan. dude he was such a fucking awful dad I actually kinda loved it. because that was the point. That he really really sucked. cfundy could never say anything around his dad because cwil would just TALK OVER HIM. I have so many drawings of cfundy where he’s living in his dads shadow or trying to talk to him and getting absolutely fucking ignored and shit. fundy was and would always be fucking fourth in line of importance to whatever cwil would be doing. cwil would be oh I love my son sooo much and then cfundy comes over and can never speak a freaking word. cwil always loved the idea of a child to own and that is his rather than having raised a person to care about. Cfundy is a pitiful daughter of a wretched father and he will ALWAYS be in his dads shadow. cfundy my sweet prince….. the decanonization of trans fundy was so sad btw. but it’s okay it’s still canon to Me. In my head.

anywya to reiterate- cdream still a CRAAAZY bastard but all the shit that was put on him that could also be put into other characters but weren’t was always so annoying. anyway cdream forever I wish he killed everyone or at least made them all go away so he could live in piece on his own land. cdream the eternal… cdream the wild…… he is the earth and you dare steal that ??? no wonder he hates you. Wow.

csbiers we’re kinda crazy all the time so glad I was a cdream team stan. oh my fucked up little trio. munchy forevrr rlly. did you know cbadboyhalo destroyed the world because he loved his husband so much? yeah. imagine being csapnap. ur dad absolutely fucks over the world because he loved ur other dad so much. bruh moment. especially because csap had the biggest fucking always second best issues. miss cgeorge too he was THE WORST!!!!!! I loved him so much. he was the most petulant of princesses he was Awful and I loved him. he was so selfish and apathetic. big war is going on and cgeorge is just off making a house. his house gets burned down a few days later and he goes whining and crying DREEEEEAM TOMMY BURNED MY HOUSE DOWN KILL HIM. and dreams like okaaay george rolls his eyes. cdream makes cgeorge king and he’s like okay. Whatever. Then he complains about it and cdream is like OKAY DONT BE KING THEN and then cgeorge throws the biggest fucking fit about it GOD I LOVED HIM SO…. peolle we’re always so annoying about George lore which was nuts that shit was GOLD. some of it was silly yeah but the blowing up the smp stream was amazing. it was the perfect show for his apathy and selfishness and how he always wanted and wanted and wanted and wanted and nothing was EEEEVER enough for him. he wants dream under his finger forever and hates that they aren’t like that anymore. he wants to kill his friends. he’s jealous of dream and techno so he kills them. he then kills most of his friends for lols. he wants to kill the dragon but ends up killing god instead. well. he tried. anyway the reception to that lore stream was like BUt itS LAme iTs a dREam. dude if he did any of that shit slash real everyone would’ve thrown a hissyfit about it. at least we get to see how fucked up he is for real for real.

how did this go from complaining about biases over ccs influencing outlooks on characters to a cgeorge love letter. that’s not actually much of a question cgeorge just has my heart forever. fuckin freak.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE ASH CHIOMA(he/she/they prns !) IN @original-character-championship !!! aka the Big Info Post

an average sillyguy protag, surrounded by characters who may have been better fitted to be main in the average media. Do you love this trope? So do I. Here's some random facts about Ash: he's a sociology student, they work at a flower shop, he dyes his hair to match the feathers it isn't natural, she unironically likes dad rock, their fav author is Asimov or whatever equivalent this universe has(I refuse to not have the laws of robotics) and her partners are a witch and a demon(that that witch accidentally summoned), and his flatmates are a person who can see ghosts and a borderline mad scientist(also several ghosts they aren't aware of who, sadly, don't pay rent.) Right! A parrot ! in my oc world, witch magic has become known and widespread, and many hospitals have witches in and use magic. Magic has become part of science. Did you know parrots breathe with two lungs and airsacs? While witches can't comfortably control only the lungs, their magic is connected to nature, and thus turning a person part animal is more easily and with less risk done. Ash was turned part parrot to help with a lung condition !

(They also have a robotic tail they sometimes wear to help with balance issues from the wings which is super swagful though hes embarrassed to wear it most the time)

If you're voting here, I'm guessing you love ocs. Here's what I have for you: oc-ception. following my inability to let go of my old world for Ash(she's been in my mind since I was 11, doodling when I had a pink, a blue and a yellow marker(so no, the pan flag thing was not intentional however it is welcome) on hand in a boring class, and I don't still want to think about the same stories), I've canonized it as his world for a story he's writing ! In my mind, the format for my oc world as a story would be as if you're in Ash's diary: watching back their memories and his impressions of things from their pov. There would be specials with his oc world, with characters growing to parallel people from his life more and more as she gets to know them and foreshadowing actual story events. Ok, so for anyone who may be interested I thought I’d list some of my personal headcanon’s for some ff7 characters. Just as an FYI, my headcanon’s tend to fit into canon, this isn’t because I think ALL headcanon’s should fit into canon but because my autistic brain just really likes it when things fit together. People may disagree, that’s perfectly fine but some headcanon’s crop up in my fanfic all the time so wanted to share. Reno: My main headcanon for Reno is that he’s from the slums, an orphan and was homeless for a time before being picked up by Veld to become a Turk. This is because in all the FF7 canon material out there Reno has an obsession with family (The Kids Are Alright, he is very insistent with making Rufus reconcile with his half-brother) and home. To me it just feels right that he’s like this because he didn’t have a family of his own. I think it could also be used to explain some of his other behaviors, being homeless as a child would have been extremely dangerous. It’s dangerous if you’re an adult, so I assume it’s worse for a kid. I am obsessed with the possible idea that Reno actually encountered Aerith before he joined the Turks. (there is absolutely NO reasoning in canon for this, I just like the idea). He would have been a teenager and she would have been very young. But following my previous headcanon of him being slum-born they do have that in common so possible bonding over that. They also have a very sibling-like relationship in the remake, they bicker like brother and sister. He considers the Turks (and later Rufus) as his family. This is implied pretty heavily in canon (at least to me) but also found family is just so good. This next one doesn’t have any basis in canon at all but it’s an idea I like; Reno was the leader of a small gang of other homeless children. In a kind of Peter Pan/Lost Boys kind of way. Makes sense, there’s safety in numbers and kids will gravitate towards others their age anyway. Reno is a functioning alcoholic. Ok, I KNOW a lot of people may have issues with this but I can’t see Reno having many healthy coping mechanisms and he’s also human and therefore has emotions in a job that involves a LOT of very dark things. Shinra doesn’t seem like the kind of company that would be willing to provide care for the mental health of it’s employees either. So no therapy for the Turks. Alcohol is easy to get hold of too, bars are everywhere. It seems like the simplest of vices to give him tbh. You can’t tell me Reno helps murder thousands of people and walks away without being affected at all, the plate drop was one instance in what is likely many traumatizing jobs he’s had to do. Reno is artistic or otherwise creative. I don’t think he paints or draws (although I did put that into one of my fics I believe) regularly but I like to imagine he can if he wanted. This is mostly because I like people having surprising talents. I feel like he might be good at lots of creative pursuits, the kind of annoying person who can pick up something creative and be good it at it with minimal practice. Also the job of being a Turk likely involves a certain amount of creativity anyway, so it’s not such a huge leap to imagine. Also, and I know this sounds silly, but look at his hands. He has long fingers, fine bones etc...I dunno if anyone else has had this but I’ve had people tell me I have artists hands (I mean, I DO because I am an artist) because although I’m very small my fingers are quite long...sorry, it’s a weird one I know, lol. So, these are just some headcanon’s I have for Reno. I will do others later. As a side note: everyone’s headcanon’s are valid.

I fucking hate my life, i want to die, I've been having so so many suicidal thoughts and urges but I've never been able to cut because I'm not allowed privacy. I feel like I'm running out of time, my heart is in my throat every single second, i can never relax, i always feel like I'm on the verge of a mental breakdown and I desperately need one but this one thought always fucks me up, "what if they know" and I would rather kill myself over living than let them know that I'm not okay. My mother, although decent at times, is manipulative, makes me feel like shit, fat shames me, shames me for not knowing something I never studied. I can never feel calm around my family. My biggest problem is my dad, I'm basically fatherless with a sperm donor. He's NEVER, NEVER at home; he's always out on the roads, hanging out with women that he's probably shagging, throwing the little money we have on fucking clothes and my mother ALWAYS fucking defends him by saying "oh he just works so hard for us that he isn't home usually" and I hate it because clearly, when he's not working, he's NEVER home and he doesn't even try to conceal the fact that he throws away the money we don't really have on fucking clothes while he hasn't bought his only daughter (i have an older brother) ANY clothes for the past 5+ years. I already have more than enough to deal with (my own ignored mental health, my issues, my grades, school etc) and to be a good friend, I always try to be there for everyone and make everyone happy but I've got to reach my breaking point sometime, have I not? I'm the therapist friend, I'm the mom friend, I'm the mature friend always; I ALWAYS help the people I call friends when they're sad but I never share my issues with anyone just because I think I'm a burden and for the past 4 years, I've bottled all my shit up and just swallowed my depression down to help the others. I'm so fucking tired of life, i wanna die, i seriously am on the verge of just doing it at this point. I have so many undiagnosed mental health issues which are CLEARLY present in me and when I try to communicate them, I'm always shut down and said to be a silly little kid because apparently, people under the age of 150 don't have problems.

Well, here's my whole ordeal: I've been abused, raped (i have a history with sa), manipulated and assaulted (domestic violence) all my life and I was raised religiously but I didn't agree with the religion I was raised in so I was an atheist for a long time and then I finally fucking found a religion that I agreed with and in which the gods and participants actually accepted me for who I was and now, everyone hates me because i fit into a ‘taboo’ religion. I'm demisexual, I find comfort in macabre and sin, I own my fucking sexuality, I like girls more than men, I use she/they pronouns and I'm a goth witch.” she sighs, “i'm a hopeless romantic and I have BPD, ADHD, insomnia, maladaptive daydreaming, psychosis, chronic depression, sociopathy and anxiety. I'm disgustingly selfless and I cut myself. I was neglected since I was a child. I'm a burntout gifted kid. My dad cheated on my mom and ever since I was 2 fucking years old, I had to endure all of their arguments and be their confidant all of the time when none of them supported me. I was expected to be perfect and always at the top of my class when it was always clear I'm more creative than academic. I was bullied all my school life and I had no fucking friends. I was too nice so everyone used me and I just went along because I cared for them and not for me. Because of all this, I am literally incapable of accepting healthy and nice connections. I'm not used to good physical touch, i always lean away from a hug and give them a nasty stare like "wtf are you doing" because I'm so ruined that i haven't ever received nice physical touch. I need extreme reassurance because I will always believe I am doing it wrong. Disgusting trust issues, I hear these fucking voices and shit which everyone believes to be an affect of the light, I'm undiagnosed when i clearly exhibit every symptom.

I hate this.

surprisingly no! i usually would be the type of person to do that but, silly autism moment, i kinda just wear the same outfit everyday because it’s comforting for me sensory and texture wise. so. it’s the most comfortable thing for me besides pajamas so no need to change. the only thing i do is take off my piles of accessories i wear everyday bc they get kinda overstimulating by the end of the day LMAO.

this works with the last part! yes so many omg i wear the exact same jewelry every day and can’t live without it. BUT. if there’s one piece i really can not part with it’s probably my key necklace! i got it at a random punk rock flea market stall but i literally love it sm for no reason. the other jewelry i wear are satanic rings, a thick tight chain (very dog like), a thinner longer chain thats not even a necklace i safety pin it together, and a multitude of baphomet / pentagram necklaces!

omg i explained this a bit before but i love my url so i’ll gladly explain more!! basically a very key part of why i am Dog is bc of dog motifs and poetry associated with it. and my mom who is very silly and i love dearly, has her own motif she accidentally created that’s stuck with me. she compared mental illness and being around it as sick dogs. sometimes you have a sick dog, you love the dog, you wanna be around the dog, but the dog keeps hurting you and biting you. you can’t be around the dog because it keeps hurting you even if you love the dog and the dog loves you back. the dog is just sick and can’t be around others. and it resonated with me so deeply because i have such a strong reactionary instinct and horrible anger issues due to neurodivergence and trauma. i love people and i wanna be around people but sometimes i’m just a sick dog and cling to a sense of isolation. also i just love the word maundering! it has two meanings, endlessly wandering around and rambling about unintelligible nonsense. and both fit me quite well tbh! so! sick-dog-maunders. i am just a sick dead dog rambling about nothing and wandering around the woods!

Headcanons for my fem!Lambert and fem!Aiden

Lambert: If there ever was a poster child for bodily autonomy issues and resentment for how your body determines your life/status in society, she is it, baby! It’s part of why I felt compelled to write fem!Laiden in the first place because I wanted to explore how being female would affect her self-perception, feelings, and motivations

I think she resents the mutations less than male Lambert. She’d have been a feral, vicious creature even if she had stayed human, but witcher strength means she’ll never be treated the way her mother was, and it helped her go kill her father. It was one of the deciding factors in her Choice

Has complicated feelings about the forced sterilization. On the one hand, she’d never really considered having kids, but on the other, she sees it as yet another violation the witchers committed against her autonomy (and she does like kids --Lambert and Ciri are the bestest of bros)

She still learned how to make contraceptive and abortifacient potions though, and (I have no idea who started the “Lambert is amazing at alchemy” hc but bless them) has improved the recipes to make them incredibly effective. She sells them in towns/temples to make extra money

Will eat fucking anything. But her favorite food is quail eggs, and she can fit approximately 27 of them in her mouth at a time

Loves spankings almost as much as she hates asking for them

Annoyingly sensitive nipples. She tried to pierce them in hopes to reduce them, which backfired spectacularly because they got even more sensitive. Aiden is delighted, but still buys her soft, silky tunics so she doesn’t chafe

Gnaws on whatever part of Aiden is closest to show her affection. Just find a spot and chomps until Aiden kisses her forehead

Refused to teach Aiden to brew her improved potions for a reaaaaally long time because 1) she wants to show affection 2) she likes caring for Aiden and 3) she still feels she needs to be useful to be loved

Aiden: disaster bisexual who is persistent above all. Most of what we know about Aiden comes from the fact that she somehow managed to befriend Lambert on a deep enough level to be violently avenged, so we’re sticking with that theme

Has some issues with privacy and boundaries. For all that I think the Cat Caravan under Guxart would have been a healthier place to grow up, emotionally, they’re probably more than a little enmeshed. Aiden doesn’t always understand when Lambert needs to be left alone

This is partly inspired by @round--robin‘s lovely fic, Brothers First, but I definitely think Aiden was parentified by the older Cats --having to take care of younger kits, even when she was still a child. I imagine this to be partly just Caravan communal-raising culture, amplified by how busy the older Cats would have been re-establishing Dyn Marv. Very eldest-daughter situation.

This made her incredibly self-sufficient and vicious (will defend her little siblings to the death), but she’s also very secretly nurturing in a way that Lambert is baffled by. This woman will sing babies to sleep and say it’s no big deal while Lambert stands there in total shock

Also very into acts of service as a love language, giving and receiving. The first time Lambert hands her a bowl of cut fruit, she cries.

Presents herself as laid-back, but Is Not. She very much needs to be in control of the situation and will not stop until she has whatever it is she wants. It’s part of why I usually make her such a dom in my smut fics

Has incredibly ticklish inner thighs. Lambert abuses this whenever she feels like being a brat (read: getting a spanking)

Was overjoyed at having Lambert meet her family but also obsessively scented her and left visible hickeys wherever possible. She’s possessive

Starting with L!!

L! I love this man, fucky lil cryptid man. L Lawliet or Rue Ryuzaki (I use both interchangeably at times.) is the world's greatest and slimiest detective. He takes up THREE whole ass slots and he sits like a weirdo. He is nothing BUT cryptid energy and gender envy to me. He's such a mary sue, but in the way that everyone who's important to the narrative and against Kira way. Honestly, Light is a mary sue too-. But that's beside the point. He is also almost always the only adult in the room. Which is funny as shit when you realize he's the most childish. Like, he holds the most authority and has the most reasonable line of thinking, while eating like three gingerbread houses with maraschino cherry syrup coating his shirt. I love him, he's a fucking bastard. He's done so many fucking crimes though. Every government is willing to believe he's Kira before they would let him on a case, which is honestly an accurate gauged of his character. He really would make something like the Kira case cuz he's board.

But GOD when you actually pull back the curtain of his actions and his Autism Stare™, you actually realize he's a little fucked up. And not in the fun way. I mean in the "Oh god, get him into therapy RIGHT NOW" way. This boy doesn't even understand the idea of opulence because he lives with the bare minimum so fucking often. It's doubtful if he even knows the comfort of a stable living quarters because he's been moving from hotel to hotel since he BECAME L. There's a high ass likelihood he doesn't even really want to be L anymore but keeps it up because it's the only thing he knows to do.

The author of DN really looked at L and went "I can fit so much autism and golden child syndrome into this man" and then didn't ask for approval. I love Ryuzaki,,, so fucking much. He's a neat character to disect, I promise.

NOW! Zib Membrane!!!

I can write like three essays about him. 90% of what I know about him is head canon, but like dude. You gotta understand, he's not okay. This is a man who caused the heat death of an entire universe in a single night BY ACCIDENT. He needs so much therapy. Not to mention he is basically a walking gender and identity crisis. He doesn't even like the name Zib. It was thrust onto him. Poor boy.

Does being part Irken count as cryptid swag? I say yes. And there's also a possibility he's also part vampire bee too. Zib does so much wrong though. Can't blame him, he's basically like a chihuahua. He's tiny and filled with enough spite to kill god. The only issue is the fact that he would 100% be bodied by earth's natural gravity.

He has enough blood on his hands to be considered fucking insane but like in his defense he's a bastard. His gender is unknowable, and that's sexy me thinks. I would mug him of his gender, it would end with him dead by accident cuz I sneezed on him. I both beloath and belove him. He's the worst.💖

All of this to say, he's my muse. He was sent to me on a pyre of wood and salt, and I love him. I hold him close to me even as he carves crescents into my fingertips with his jagged teeth. I cradle him as I show him off to all who will acknowledge him, even if he's trying to break each digit in my hand with the brute strength he most defiantly doesn't own. I make him wear silly little dresses as he screams curses. I love him a lot. 💖Although the feeling is most defiantly not mutual.

Ah!! Next rat bastard, Ciel Phantomhive!

OI! SOMEONE GET THIS SASSY CHILD—.

Okay enough playing around. Ciel Phantomhive, the most normal character I own in my list. Which is saying something because he has suffered straight up abuse. And not just the verbal kind.

The storyline of Black Butler is just there to show you how fucked up one traumatized 13-year-old kid can get. And like, yeah that shit tracks. Wish trauma wasn't on the docket per each arch, but much like Sebastain, I sorta reveal in it. It's cathartic to me somehow. I can't explain it, but I do like seeing Ciel lose his shit and be pathetic a lot. I also like seeing his demon butler take care of him, because Ciel is only 13.

Ciel has committed literal crimes. Like, murder is defiantly something he's partaken in at least three times since the beginning of the Madame Red Arc alone. And he is basically a nervous dog with enough spite to kill god. Or at the very least, kill his dear butler, Sebastian. Which almost happened thanks to the Undertaker. God I almost feel bad for that demon. Almost.

His gender is something I do crave though. Something about the opulent style mixed with the clearly childish outfits is super cute! Not to mention the dark gothic vibes. Like these fantasy outfits are so cute and I agree with the art team during that one arc that was super serious. I miss Ciel in very flashy, eye-catching, Victorian inspired clothing. His clothing style inspired my very hyper specific gender need of complex cute and girlish outfits but tailored for boys in specific.

That is to say, Ciel is a muse to me outfit wise. And making art of him. Also character study wise. I relate to his struggles a lot, and he's helped me learn how to more reasonably respond to trauma. I... don't know how that works, seeing as he's a repressed traumatic mess with PTSD. But I guess sometimes you need a character that is a wreck to show you how to not be one.

I love him, so much. I hope the kiddo gets to die a fairly peacefully death in the end. Since ya know, he was dead before the narrative even started going. And at the current moment, that's the only way I see the storyline ending. It would suck and yet it would be only natural. Although if we get canon Demon!Ciel I wouldn't be opposed to it in the slighest!

Matsuda!!!

It is him, the "just a guy" of guys. He literally starts out the manga looking in his thirties and by the time he is seen in the one shot with his hair grown back out he looks like he turned 21 yesterday. You straight up overlook him in the manga for so long until one day BAM he's in your face and he's being cute.

He is literally trying his best at all times, and I love him for it. He's currently in my brain 24/7. I am making a whole ass fic about him and Beyond, and I'm getting a birthday present about him once more. I love him. He's literally babygirl.

Of course, a man who is perfectly well adjusted is not a part of my blorbo list. And I can promise you, Matsuda Touta is not well adjusted. He's just a sunshine boy though. He's that one person who is actually deeply traumatized and when opens up about it, people are questioning how he isn't a depressed ball on the floor. Because, like, he really should be? He haunted by both L and Soichiro's death but he just sorta pushes on anyways?

He bounces back and looks happy and acts it a lot. But he really is suffering on the inside. He's like a repressed time bomb that doesn't even know he's repressed. And lord help him by the time the one shots roll around. You almost wonder how many break downs he's had in private post Light's death. And yet he's still a police officer, who seemingly didn't learn a damn thing from the Kira case. Still bright eyed and willing to jump off a building if it meant securing the outcome of for the case.

Gotta love him. His gender is so aggressively just a guy™. He really shouldn't have been in such a dark piece of media. He's written as comic relief, but he really starts out the manga thinking he's in a normal murder mystery manga. Only to meet L and decide that he's now in a dorky comedy. Only to have Light be put on the team and then is CONVINCED it's a romcom. Man can't get any breaks because he only realizes it's a tragedy he's been put into once L is dead.

If anyone in death note deserves a soft epilogue it's Matsuda and the rest of the task force. They went through so much shit, and for what? Light's ego trip into ego death? Not far.

I think a good little follow up for Matsuda would be him being domestic and helping out what remines of the SPK. He needs a rich authority figure anyways. Plus Near could use the company too.

Finally, the puppy in a human's(?) body! Luo Binghe!!

Somehow, he isn't normal. Like at all.

I can't really say much about him because all I know is stuff about him in passing and from the first few chapter(s?) of the book because Riku read it to me. I'm a disaster case and it was the only way to get me to read the story. Legally.

But like the artists who did the official art on the books got me smitten with him. Like look, his hair is so curly and long, and he's just so cute. He's an oversized dog who's in love with his less than good teacher. It's cute, a little messy, but cute.

He's also in the wrong story aggressively. He was literally written to be a stallion novel protag. His real story (the one that's closer to how SVSSS is written as) should be an idiot plot with countless misunderstanding. Like Romeo and Juliet mixed with the tale of Orpheus. No, I'm not kidding. It would be funny though.

Unfortunately, not much to say here, since I actually should learn more about him. But like, I'm sorry. He's unironically so fucking cute. I want him to have the world. He deserves it all.

Thomas and Friends Season 1 Review: Gorgeous Uniquely British Rail Based Insanity (Comission for lachievpoststhings)

Hello all you happy good engines! I”m Jake I review stuff and today we got another comission and for the first time in a while someone liked my work enough to comission me out of the blue.. and when I say a while I mean in the three years i’ve been doing comissions this is the first to not come from Kev or Emma so i’m pleased as punch it happened.

This one is out of my element as this is both a show meant for preschoolers (something i’ve only covered once thus far for my three cabs retrospective) and a franchise i knew nothing about going in: Thomas the Tank Engine, though Lachiev, the nice guy comissoining this was happy to give me some background info and the rest I dug up was fascenating. Add in the fact the show , which I knew as CGI in the present was STOP MOTION, an artform I always love, and narrated by ringo star, who took time out of personally responding to all his fan mail to work on this show, and I was intrigued enough to agree.

And what I got was a mix of delightful model work.. and a rollercoaster of fairly standard, if often charming, episdoes for a show like this.. and insane ones that involve train crashes, attempted murder and bricking a sentient being inside a tunnel “forever and ever” for being naughty and only letting him out when you’ve succesfully broken his spirit.

Nope! Join me under the cut as we take a vacay to the isle of Sodor to visit some silly little engines.

Background

Thomas the Tank Engine started life as a series of books, the Railway series, by Reverend Wilbert Awdry, which is one of the most delightfully british names i’ve ever heard. He was by all accounts a lovely man and, given the series adherence to how railways really worked despite the trains being sentient beings with faces who when angry can bore deep into my soul making holes that willl never heel, it’s not a big suprise he was huge into trains and railways and in retirment still championed for railway preservation.

And some evidence of this is how the books came about. In 1942, yes the stories are that old, Wilbert and his wife were trying to keep their 2 1/2 year old son christopher intertained as he was laid up with measles. Most of their stories failed to help the child.. but he was drawn to the silly rhymes his dad made up about trains, leading to wilbur telling him more stories and elaborating on the ones he had. His wife thought they were good enough she urged him to publish them and after adding a happier ending to one of their stories because without that sequel the execs were rightfulyl worried it’d send every child who read int into depressive crying fits, more on that story later, it was a huge hit. Chris still enjoyed the stories and wanted a mockup of Gordon, the biggest of the train, but since that was impossible for wilbur he instead made a tank engine the boy crhistned thomas.. and the rest as they way was history. The second book was a huge hit and while Wilbur intended to stop after that he continued for the reasons you’d expect

I can’t blame him: He had a family to think of, he clearly loved trains and judging by this series, which is as far as I can tell as straight as they could adapt them, the quality didn’t remotely dip. He continued this into the 70′s before retiring and the series sat dormant. There were attempts to adapt it.. but the timing just wasn’t right: animation was the only way it could go but by the time it had gotten to being on tv the series had been dead for years.

But then lightning struck when tv exec Britt Alcroft saw a reading of the stories and after reading the books herself, saw gold and bought the rights, workign with the reverened and his now grown son to make the show. Chris had not only shared his dad’s love of engines but of thomas, but had wanted to continue the stories, something his dad happily agreed to. Sadly it woudln’t end great iwth rights issues nad creative diffrences sinking it despite his attempts to continue, but it was succesful enough at the time that many of chris’ stories got adapted alongside his fathers.

The series used models, which were made with a combination of actual train models nad resent, carefully put together and used on real tracks. This lead to the series very unique animation style: it is somewhat limited with only the characters faces moving and when they do move it’s clearly like any other model train, and the human characters are just well carved mintiures. Yet.. it works. The faces are incredibly expressive,w ith diffrent ones built, the model train sets are gorgeous, especailly the snow ones to the point I coudln’t tell it was just powdered sugar for most of the first time they used it, and while the characters are only narrated by Ringo, he does so with enough gusto and whismy it comes off charming. Despite a small budget the series FEELS magical and feels like a story book brought to life, with the limited animation feeding into that, the still bits feeling like the imageso n a page. It’s truly awe inspiring they made something so wholesome and fun to watch with just a few simple tricks and a lot of still images. But that’s all the techincals and stuff, what’s the show like in motion?

Stupid Train Children

Thomas and Friends takes place on the british isle of Sodor, based on the isle of man. The reason for picking an island was simple: it allowed the good reverened to still use UK trains, but have an area where he could world build with. Granted this mostly amounts here to just a diffrent assortment of train lines in the series, but it still shows: Sodor feels like it has a specific geography to it and thus feels more alive.

The show follows Thomas and a number of other sentient trains, to the point thomas is often absent from episodes, as they go about their days and usual fuck up and learn some sort of lesson. Their essentially, as lachiev himself brilliantly called them “Stupid Train Children”, with their dad being the Fat Controller. And that’s not me being an ass , that’ what they really call him. As a fat reviewer, I can sympathize.. but I will also call him that over tottinghat because it amuses me.

The show follows a number of basic setups

1) One of the trains gets full of themselves and in their arrogance fucks up horribly and gets humilated for their hubris.

2) One of the trains gets into a silly situation (rarer) 3) One of the trains is a dick to another train or people and general and gets punished for their hubris, with the train or other object with a horrifying flesh face they mocked getting some form of victory, wether it be saving their ass or just showing their useful.

It’s standard kids show stuff, especially for the time. This was the same time period where we got the get along gang, aka OBEY THE MAJORITY CHILDREN OR GOD WILL PUNISH YOU FOR THINE AROGANCE. Or for my fellow 90′s kids, what the buddy bears was making fun of. But it does avoid the pitfalls of shows like said get along conformist half hour. Which is the rare show I will cricize sight unseen because it’s entire purpose is laughably horrible, so there. Here the problem isn’t conformity or anything: it’s just “be kind, don’t get cocky kid, and hang in there even if people are an ass to you, you’ll shine”. There lessons for everyone and even if i’m about 10 times the age of the target demo, there’s still a charm to it. I can see WHY this series has a massive fanbase to this day: it’s simple, but it works perfectly. And frankly that’s the best way to do a preschool show.

As for characters... while there are a lot of them their really pretty one note outside of thomas, who while hot headed and cheeky is a good sort deep down , cares for his carriages annie and clarabel, and will do the right thing and the Fat Controller who while.. very questionable early on, evolves into a loving father figure, to the point he adopts a train he met on vacation. Otherwise the characters are mostly one note or no notes whatsoever, but given the series both moves fast and the purpose of said characters is more to teach specific lessons or show off diffrent types of trains and sometimes other vehicles, I can let it slide. The show is great for what it is and I look forward to seeing more of it. Now I COULD end the review there but that’d be underselling this show. So instead i’m going to go over the season 1 episodes one at a time like I do for venture bros, though instead of in depth analysis i’m going to give a quick review. Some quicker than others. I’ll also be doing only one entry for stories that are two parter.

Episode Guide

Thomas and Gordon

This story was moved up as given the title, they wanted to spotlight the main character and all. This one has Thomas be a bit cheeky to Gordon, the biggest train on the line and also a massive egotistical prick.... and thunder clashed the second I heard that so clearly gordon heard me so if this review is published posthumously, you’ll know why. Thomas chides Gordon saying he wants to pull trains and stuff and Gordon teaches him a lesson as you would.. by doing the train equilvent of tying him to the bumper of a car and letting him fly in the road like a bob stoolie. I mean Thomas stays attached to the train but the principal is the same and he learns the valuable lesson that gordon is to both be hated and feared. I”m also going to be keeping some counts. Sadly not one for accidnetal inneundos though for the record there’s about 127 this season, so it’d be a bit exausting, but for when Gordon’s an Egotisticla prick, and That Seems A Bit Unresonable for when the punishment outweighs what the train did

The Sad Story of Henry/Edward Gordon and Henry

And now we’ve come to the big one. While the first story caught me off guard for how insane it was, this one REALLY uped the ante. This one is easily both the most cruel and the most insane at once and is thus infamous. And rightfully so, even if it’s direct sequel helps with the sting a bit the sad story of henry is still PROFUNDLY fucked up and is indeed the story Is aid had to have a sequel just to get published and for good damn reason.

So the SSOH starts simple enough: Henry is a train whose being a small bit of a wanker (and yes I know what that actually means, it was intetional) and refuses to leave his tunnel as to not get wet, refusing to listen to his goddadboss fat controller and attempts to push him fail. So the fat Controller’s response? Take away the track in front of said tunnel and brick him up in there, “For always and always”.

Yes this does happen and in the version I watched those are the exact terms. The US version, naturally changed the narration to that. It also left out the part where the narrator says “I think he deserved it don’t you”

Yeah. And while apparently it’s a sore spot to imply henry never got out, and he does next episode and once again punishes gordon for his hubris.. it dosen’t take away the fact the Fat Contorller’s response to an issue was to imprison a train and only let him out because the experimnce of being trapped for DAYS mentally broke him into obedience. I’m not even being cheeky myself, that’s entirely what happens from context: Henry feels bad and is unsuaully helpful after. I can chock this up to early instalment weirdness and the good reverend having been not used to writing on his end, but how EVERYONE working on the show thought this was okay to translate 1:1 is beyond me.

Thomas’ Train

Thomas gets to pull freight but accidently leaves his cars behind. Gordon isn’t a dick for once and this episode isn’t that intresting. Concidence?

Thomas and the Trucks

This one was the title for the first tape I watched, as Lacheiv had me watch some old VHS Rips, which was charming, including the fact that between segments they just had this weird bit showing off the entire cast... including several characters who don’t debut till the second or last tapes.

Fun fact asides this is a decent one enough: Thomas gets to haul trucks, who decide to shove him around and nearly cause an accident because every sentient being in this franchise has to be an asshole for at least one segment. And yes EVERY car or truck on a train is sentient

Not bad, pretty standard stuff.

Thomas and the Breakdown Train

We meet henry, a shiny new train whose basically, at least for now, thomas but red. Another fairly standard ep, Thomas feels bad about himself, but is able to prove himself by saving henry, but it’s still INCREDIBLY important in the grand scheme of things, as this is where Thomas gets his own train line i.e. going from just pushing things around to carrying passengers and his story begins in earnest.

James and the Coaches/Troublesome Trucks

A two parter, this one spotlights james more and again James comes off a lot like thomas, likely because at this stage which train was which only mattered for the bigger trains. The first has james fuck up again first accidently destroying the fat controller’s hat, then angry over that taking it out on his coaches and thus going super fast, annoying and endgagering his guests.. and then literally brekaing down. This also leads to his condcutor needing a guy’s shoe lace to repair james.. and this guy leads to another count I feel i’m going to need especially for the future: Side Character Idociy Count as the guy REFUSES. For no real reason other than to be obscrutive and obnoxious.. which tracks with real life. Thankfully the res to fthe passngers rage is enough to get him to reconsider lest they tie him to a diffrent set of train tracks and wait for nature to take it’s course.

As a result James is confined to a shed though the resulting story is awesome: James admits he was wrong, gets freed to push trucks and works his ass off despite said trucks not wanting to work with a “big red monster”, succesfully winning back the fat controller’s trust. It honestly got me hooked into it, wanting to see james succeed and this two parter feels like a far better version of the henry story: a train screws up thanks to his own ego and has to work his way back, just without the horrifying tourture.

James and the Express

One more james story, with James getting mocked by Gordon.. only for the egotistical prick to get lost himself, leading to a great comeback by james.

Thomas and the Guard

Thomas accidently forgets his guard, i.e. the guy looking after the train on the inside. Thomas’ coaches annie and clarabell get flehsed out some more. So.. yeah not a lot in this one. LIke I said some are shorter than other so er.. have this.

Yeah that’ll do.

Thomas Goes Fishing

As you can tell by the image of a bunch of grown men fishing inside a horrified looking train car with danger, keep away signs all around him, this is a weird one. Thomas wants to try going fishing.. and is punished for his.. hubris? Is it even hubris to want to try fishing? I mean he is a sapient being and he could probably hold a fishing pole in there? Like.. the story treats this like some moral failing but... he did nothing but want to fish. And as a result he gets a fish in his tank that his conductor and guard have to fish out and utterly humilated? What?

And it gets even weirder: They EAT the fish, having a meal of fish and chips. Yes really. I’m no fish expert but i’m pretty sure a fish you fished out of a train’s boiler should be endeible at best and stomach imploding at worse.

Thomas, Terrance and the Snow

We meet Terrance, a tractor who Thomas insults because Thomas is also a bit of a prick sometimes, if not as much as Gordon. Thomas also has to have a snowplow installed and looks like he wants to murder everyone, but learns his lesson as not having him leaves him snowbound and gives him a new respect of terrance for saving his ass from his own stupidity and stuborness.

This one’s also notable because like I said the set is REALLY fucking goregous. I don’t know how they covered the set in snow so well, as it’s clearly the same sets they used meaning they either made a double, not an easy feat i’m sure, or had to clean all that up. THey get two stories out of it too, so it’s not like it was for a ton or they coudln’t of just skipped this one to avoid the expense, but they did it anywya nad i’m glad they did. This is easily the best looking the series has been up to this point and will be for the rest of the season. Truly top notch work and a fun time.

Thomas and Bertie

Easily my faviorite of season one and for once not a morality tale or anything. This one just has Thomas form a rivarly with a bus who mocks him, and the two and their drivers agree to a race, which kept my attention the whole time. I figured, correctly, thomas would probably win, but it was still fun to watch each twist and turn as both’s natural disadvantages (thomas’ long refuling, bertie having to take longer routes and stop for traffic, thomas picking up more speed as time went on) made for a nailbiting race and the two becoming friends at the end was adorable.

Tenders and Turntables/Trouble in The Shed/ Percy Runs Away

So this one is just... hilaroius. So gordon, henry, his conditiong having worn off and james go on strike as their pissed smaller trains are doing coach jobs while they have to do some of the pushign cars and stuff work. Like a commmener. The fat controller naturally has none of this and grounds them, and just busy a new train, Percy, to show them their not replaceable. Which would be dickish if he were say doing it due to low wages (do these trains even get paid? is this slavery? how ethical is this operation?.. that that’ sgoing to keep me up to night) and not just being egotistical pricks.

They learn their lesson, and Percy later gets into shenanginas because he was too eager to work and nearly runs into gordon.. who for once shows some humiltiya nd is impressed Percy manages to RUN BACKWARDS AWYA FROM HIM. I am too holy shit percy. As you can tell percy became an instant faviorite of mine. All in all a truly fun and hilarious set of episodes.

Coal/The Flying Kipper

Oh you thought the series was DONE torturing poor henry?

Nope! This two parter.. ish... is here to pile more suffering on the poor engine. In the first Henry is sick, with his box just not burning as well these days and spends most of the short either exausted or being mocked or harassed by the other trains for “not working hard enough”, and once again is threatned by the fat controller. .though this time it’s with replacement as since the conditioning from the tourture wore off he deemed it ineffective. IT’s honestly the meanest he’s been since that ep.

That being said he does quickly redeem himself as once he realizes it really is a tehcnical issue, he not only apologizes but when needing expensive welsh coal to fix it, he gladly foots the bill. Granted it’s because it’s more practical than getting a replacement train but still, compared to the guy who at the start of the season walled him up forever as a punishment for “can’t make me don’t wanna” it’s progress.

The second part is mostly unrelated but does solve the welsh coal thing: Henry goes on a winter run to deliver the flying kipper, the island’s fish truck... but dosne’t get signaled about danger ahead because the signal’s frozen over. So he HORIFICALLY CRASHES because god regretted the day he made henry and aims to correct his mistake. That said while I assumed there’d be more abuse heaped on the poor engine, instead the Fat Controller shows how much he’s grown again by understanding and having henry rebuilt with a new frame and a better engine. It really makes The Sad Tale of Henry episode more baffling as the character is hardly recognizable by this point in the stories, so why’d they keep him so cruel for that one?

Whistles and Sneezes

What a suprise, Gordon is an egotistical prick, this time getting on henry for whistling now he gets to pull the express. Gordon, like god apparently hates it when Henry has any joy in his life. So are the local kids who break Henry’s windows when he whistles at them, but he gets back at them by sneezing on them, covering them in soot and causing them to die of colera as they brought on themselves. Also Gordon gets his compuance when his own whistle breaks.

Toby and the Stout Gentleman/Thomas in Trouble

This is a nice one where, while a two part story, you don’t get how their connected till halfway through.

The first half spotlights toby and his carriage henrietta (she has no face.. yet but apparently their a couple later. That’s lovely), an outdated train whose sadly being put out of work as the line he’s on in essex no longer needs him. Thankfully he finds a new dad in the form of the Fat Controller whose on vacatoin as the Stout Tentleman and admires toby’s gentle nature and work ethic and since he can always use more stupid train children, he plans to buy him.

And just in time too since Thomas runs afoul of the police. The old kind officer on one of thomas’ routes is replaced with your typical police officer: i.e. a regulation and violation loving asshole woh penalizes thomas for minor things like not having a cowcatcher, even though they’ve never seen any cattle on the route.

Thankfully toby meets the requirements and blows his whistle at the prick so justice is had and Toby gets a new home. All in all a really lovely story. Toby is really likeable even if the non round faces on vehicles creep me th efuck out, he’s the exceptoin. He’s just so sweet and it’s so nice of the fat controller to basically adopt hima nd his wife. Just wholesome and heartwarming all around.

Dirty Objects

James mocks god’s faviorite son Toby for his apperance and is judged by getting covered in muck and humilaited.

Off the Rails

Gordon is an egotistical prick.. again

First teasing James who you THINK would deserve some teasing given how he acted last ep... and yo’ud be wrong as gordon does so whiile saying nothing bad EVER happens to him... with James pointing out his own stupid mishaps to no avail. Then Gordon takes it up another notch by being a picky dickhead , refusing to pull special trucks because i’ts “beneath him”.. and getting stuck in a bog as a result. The fat controller leaves him there to be laughed at till evening as he brought it on himself. I laugh, You laugh, we all laugh. As we should.

Down the Mine

The last vhs title. This time Thomas mocks gordon as he should then gets stuck in a mine due to his own stupidity. This sure was an episode that happened.

Thomas’ Christmas Party

This one is just sweet and a high note to end on. It’s christmas time and Thomas and co are feeling the spirit, and Thomas wants to invite Miss Kyndly to a christmas party. If you don’t remember her don’t be blue, this is her first apperance. And I checked the incident where she helped thomas mentoined hadn’t happened. But she helped him so when she gets snowed in the trains and co all pull together to get her to christmas. It’s a simple, heartwarming christmas tale and seeing the set decked out for chrismtas, as wlel as the image above with all the trains in little santa hats really warms my heart. I may look this one up next christmas, a true treat .

So that finishes season 1. Will I be back for season 2?

Lachiev has already told me be plans to do it in a few months and frankly this was fun. It was good modelwork combined with easily mockable insanity. Just the perfect mix for the work I do.
