I lied. One more little scream about Lust, Caution:
The thing I really liked actually was that she did not do the right thing.
Putting aside the moral question of whether it is right to murder a man like Yee, her choice caused everyone to die except for the man who tortured people because of their political views, and the guy who sent in university students to do his dirty work and had no intention of getting her out of there alive. Which sort of disqualitfies it from being the right choice if you ask me.
And I liked that this was how the story went. Yes, it can be great when the tragedy of an ending is that someone makes the hard but right decision. But to me, it was refreshing to see the main character go "fuck this, it might be stupid, but you are more important to me than literally any other thing in the world, including common sense and morality". Babygirl is getting a standing ovation from me lol

I find it so funny how the movie made such a big deal out of Cleo and Deuce having broken up, and it’s this whole dramatic angsty thing and the first piece of info that’s given to us about these characters
And then in the cartoon show it’s just like. “yeah we dated for a bit but we’re defs better as friends, anyway-“ at like. episode 29.

I honestly don't remember who I saw the link from, but I just found Bret Devereaux's analysis of the Siege of Gondor in the LOTR films and the book (the part most relevant to my Stewardist interests is here, but I read the whole thing once I started!). I don't agree with all his interpretations on the literary level, but they're generally defensible and the military analysis is fascinating.
An excerpt:
In contrast to the film, the book shows Faramir and Denethor’s handling of the battle as nothing short of a masterful execution of defense in depth. At each stage, the army of Mordor is forced to sustain casualties and disorder to surmount one set of defenses, only to be presented with fresh defenses and troops. At the end of it, Denethor’s sortie shatters Mordor’s vanguard and buys the escape of Faramir’s force. Thus for all of their pains and delays, the Army of Mordor faces a Minas Tirith fully defended, having lost the chance to destroy a good part of the army of Gondor in the field.

Idk if its just me but ive never seen tigress and po as romantic or even like. Implied to be? Like when i was a kid but also upon rewatching the movies even now i dont really see them as anything other then like... A close friendship. I cant really think of any scenes where their relationship had romantic tones to it

after i wake up tomorrow, i know I'm gonna have to yap about Ramattra. for a moment i had been considering to make yips over on twitter cuz i kinda did already do a bit of brain dumping over there-
but then i quickly reminded myself how shit twitter is as a platform for spewing over fandom stuff, so expect my rambles to be on here instead. i totally need the space to just howl into the abyss over a probable new fixation forming/re-encouraging an already deep fixation for mecha in general hhhh

About 10 mins into The Avengers rewatch, title card shows and these thoughts so far:
- This movie gets sometimes critiqued for looking flat/like a tv production and... yeah. It kinda does. But also look very comic book. It chooses a lot of fun angles and poses and just... it feels VERY well matched with the energy of a fun comic book superhero story. For example comparing it to Thor 1 which I think looks better on its own, that also is trying to match a different tone.
- This script is efficient. All the lines are quotable but in general I think what strikes me is how efficient and tbh simple a lot of the script is. But it also makes it accessible which leads to the next point,
- This will be even more clear when we get to all the introductions but this movie is so "beginner" friendly. Ofc this was a hit. You could see it with limited knowledge of the characters and still understand the vibe and the basic plot.
Yeah. This movie gets it.
