hiii! In regards to the "Guillermo del Toro Says “We Have to Rescue” Studio Animation From “Emoji-Style Behavior”" article/statement, do u have examples of animation that specifically is & is not this type of expression/animation? Bc it's rly hard for me to actually picture this and like I need examples ahaha

Disclaimer - I was not at this specific talk, so I don't have the full context and I know from reliable sources - friends of mine that DID attend it - that it's not all he said there, so that article is pretty much only relying spicy chosen bits. That being said, I will focus on this paragraph.

Getting more specific, he went on to detail what he despises about certain lazy proclivities in commercial animation, notably how characters and emotions are “codified into a sort of teenage rom-com, almost emoji-style behavior.” He added, “[If] I see a character raising his fucking eyebrow, or crossing his arms, having a sassy pose — oh, I hate that shit. [Why] does everything act as if they’re in a sitcom? I think it is emotional pornography. All the families are happy and sassy and quick, everyone has a one-liner. Well, my dad was boring. I was boring. Everybody in my family was boring. We had no one-liners. We’re all fucked up. That’s what I want to see animated. I would love to see real life in animation. I actually think it’s urgent. think it’s urgent to see real life in animation.”

What he talks about here is something I find omnipresent in modern American animation, or from studios that are funded by and/or trying to sell to americans (ex: Illumination McGuff). Here del Toro specifically mentions characters and emotions and how they are codified, which would include how characters are written, how animated their emotions and body language are, how they interact... He also mentions studio animation, an important distinction - this does not include indie animators!

A few things, adding * to those he's specifically calling out here, and more of my own that are not stated but I feel match the style

*one liners

*the "dreamworks face"

*sassy attitude

*quick banter

*taking poses

looking into the camera

overtly smooth, cartoony body language

characters explaining their emotions, plot resolutions around this

I will now get to examples, starting by a comparison between two animated films. Both of these films are contemporary, family-audience, french animated films. They share similarities in setting, being medieval fantasy fairytales about female heroes. One of these films was made with an american audience in mind (Pil), and the other caters to a french audience (Dragon Princess). You can compare how the characters act in both trailers:

Try and only focus on dialog, body language and expressions, barring art style and story!

Feature films that, in my opinion, also fit that "emoji style behaviour" (* for those I have not fully watched) any why:

Turning Red: the sass, the one liners, body language, camera looking, quick banter, plot resolution with characters explaining their emotions. The whole film fits

Puss in Boots: The last wish: sass, one liners, body language, banter, characters explaining their emotions. Scenes like Puss meeting his past lives and the dog's dialog are strong offenders

The emperor's new groove: sass, one liners, posing, banter

Encanto: sass, posing, banter; the explaining their emotions to drive the plot is ridiculously present to the point where I'd say del Toro was vagueing that one with the family example

Klaus: posing, banter, body language, explaining their emotions

*Nimona: sass, posing, banter, expressions...I only watched the trailer so can't say much but it leans HARD into the rapid fire quip territory with emotional resolution

*Trolls: sass, posing, banter, body language, camera looking...

Regarding films that do not do this, the quick answer would be...watch foreign (=not american) and/or older films. Nowadays with internet a massive catalogue is available, although the USA has such a monopoly on animation via its advertising budget other countries don't have that those films can be harder to find especially if you only use english-speaking internet.

As most studio animation is for a young or family audience and my entire example list above is, I will give some recommendations of films that are also for such an audience, but with older and worldwide picks. Some of these films are fully available on YouTube (although not in english always), so I'll be linking that when possible!

Mom is pouring rain (France, 2020s) (trailer): A shorter film about a little girl sent to live with her grandmother while her mom heals from depression. Has emotions front and center but expressed and animated in a way typical of modern french animation, with cartoony designs but subtler, more "boring" acting

The little prince and the eight headed dragon (Japan, 1960s): Beautifully animated in a style distinct from anime, this is a simple folktale adaptation. Fully on YouTube, albeit in its original english dub who's quality is frankly not great.

Next! (UK, 1990s): Stop motion short by an animator who specifically explores subtler, harder to animate expressions, as well as the art of theater, represented here by a Shakespear puppet playing out his works as a one-man show.

Ramayana (India, 1990s): Animated version of the legend of the same name, coupling a Ghibli art style with your ancient legend's large scale battles and polite heroes.

Ne Zha (China, 2010s)(trailer): that trailer is dead serious, it's actually a pretty damn silly movie! Including this one because as a big CGI animated film it's interesting to compare to what Pixar/Dreamworks/etc is doing.

...I'm realizing that I included a whole lot of animated folk tales so for modern chinese animation I'll also name Legend of Hei (2020s)(trailer), an original fantasy film with indie origins and a whole lot of over the top action.

As for films from the US that do NOT match that style? As a country the US has a rich history of animation asides of Disney! I personally grew up on Tex Avery and Looney Tunes cartoons who (pre-90s) are great examples of this.

hey ollie!! I’ve been seeing a few… mixed reviews for this last episode, and as someone that liked it, I wanted your opinion. I’ve been hearing a lot of people call this fight ‘clumsy’ and ‘railroading’ and ‘boring’, considering the only trigger to end the fight was one specific PC doing one specific thing, and making it feel like ‘imogen is the only PC that matters, regardless of her prior reluctance in giving into her powers’ (real take I saw here on tunglr dot com). I for one was expecting a TPK followed by a group-vision, so the fact that only two are dead so far is actually doing better than anticipated. thoughts? comments? concerns?

i have happily missed all of those kinds of comments & when i stumbled on one rather harsh criticism that drifted into my world i blocked that person. i don’t rly talk about stuff like this? im more of a “lurk in the shadows & throw my writing out” person. but i have seen some ice cold takes so yeah fuck it, i’ll talk abt my impression of the episode

i really really liked it

matt has a stupidly difficult job balancing encounters for SEVEN PLAYERS. i have three players at my table & i still struggle to give them a real challenge sometimes. in my opinion, he did both the set up & the encounter brilliantly.

first of all, he set up the mythology of otohan thull in the last eight episodes or so—everything the paragons call said about her in passing, the vibes of imogen’s dreams, the fact that she was somehow in the feywild, the fact that she’s working with daleth (who WE the audience know to be Very Powerful), what ashton told the party about her being a famed warrior—& made it concrete. there is a reason she’s a famed warrior, there’s a reason she’s the head of the paragons call, there’s a reason she lunged at imogen & imogen thought she died. otohan thull is a boss level character who has the ability to kill all of them. she is Supposed to be powerful, she was set up to be powerful not just to challenge the players but also narratively. it wouldn’t make sense in the context of the world & the aggressive, martial basuras if this person wasn’t stupidly scary & stupidly proficient at murder, yknow?

secondly, the encounter. a nail biter. this one made me think of - i know people have alluded to the stress of the first vecna fight but i was thinking about raishan because that one nearly made me break my teeth clenching my jaw as hard as i did. it’s a good episode to link to (because it fucks severely & keyleth is incredible) because it’s a one-against-everyone PLUS allies & it’s one of those episodes where everyone seems to drop & get back up & by the end two revivifies were used (one failed) & they had to res ritual someone after (for those of you who don’t know, when someone has been dead for longer than a minute, they have to use the resurrection spell instead of revivify & it’s a whole extended ritual & it’s amazing RP always).

if they had fought thull tomorrow, they could have won. today was already knocked by the FCG fight, imogen used a spell to try activate the feywild shard, laudna used hunger of the shadow, fearne used heat metal & she & FCG used some healing spells too. they’d already tapped into some of their spells & abilities & then again in the chaos of the attack on the call.

if they had doubled down & fought thull & had better initiatives (though the STORY it tells of thull going first, the assassin being quicker, the person who has fought wars being scrappier & quicker on the draw) they could maybe have won. matt was saying at the end that she looked “ragged-ish” & i agree with him when he points out they spent those first vital actions running away. they didn’t know when they started that she had legendary actions/reactions. they didn’t know that she could cross this battlefield in a bonus action if she wanted to.

when you think of an encounter, it’s never just about the stats—it’s about the story. especially when it comes to matt’s world, especially when it comes to these players who balance class skills with character choices. otohan thull came out alone to fight them—she’s arrogant, but not undeservedly so, as we find out. brennan lee mulligan said the scariest encounters are the ones in which you give your bad guys a goal to complete. in this encounter, the goal was imogen—to break her, change her, recruit her? dunno—&, like everything else about otohan thull, that had been Hinted at but couldn’t be confirmed until the fight.

im gonna join this with the third point

third, concerning the idea of a dream or vision: when each encounter is a fragment of story, what does it mean that the battlefield was otherwise empty? is it just otohan’s arrogance? or does it mean something that matt didn’t describe people scurrying out of the periphery of the fight, or anyone in the building imogen tried to escape from. does the sandstorm mean anything? it didn’t have a mechanical effect in this fight when it did in the previous encounter. was that just because it died down a little or does it hint toward it being a dream/vision as people have said?

personally, i think it was real & in the immediate aftermath i did say to a friend that a dream/vision would undercut the story for me. i don’t think that anymore. dreams have been such a point of visceral terror for imogen continuously through the campaign so far that i think it would be horrifying to realise that it was a dream, to have matt play around with the limits of a dream—which is SUCH a powerful thing in the fantasy genre to use dreams as exploration or invitation or corruption, to be in dreams that are on the cusp of prophecy, dreams that are a little too real—so if that’s what they end up doing i’m totally onboard. that being said, i don’t think it is. they’ve always been direct with deaths & that sort of thing & i think that it’s a very real moment that is supposed to emphasise how they are in over their heads. orym made a very nice speech about how they’re the only ones who know the threads of what is being done & that they have to stop it—and now this. eight hours later. they’re a little group (in world, at least) of squishy scrappy adventurers & they’re getting their narrative comeuppance for hubris, & a distinct lack of caution. hardly any health potions? a healer on the fritz? very little reconnaissance? no real allies? their attention divided between personal & everything else? i think it’s real, i think it’s very deadly, & i think like molly’s death it’s going to make for a more sombre & driven party. otohan’s goal for this encounter was imogen. narratively, the goal of this encounter (i suspect we will find in the coming months) was to be a hydraulic press & squash them into one party with one goal

fourth, main character imogen. this is bullshit straight up. i could leave it there but i’ll keep going bc i love women & i’ll take any chance to defend their right to take up space & tell their stories. laura makes the most awesome characters & frankly didn’t get Huge amounts of time dedicated solely to her story line in c1 & c2. it’s cool, it’s fine, she tells amazing stories in the time she gets & is a vital part of the story they’re all writing together, but as soon as we found out that purple-eyed, anime-haired, horse girl, night-terror, lightning-handed imogen was a thing i fell to my knees & wept in gratitude with the knowledge that laura was gonna get narratively whammied & whammied Hard by matthew mercer & his plot stick this campaign, as she well deserves.

do people complain about the briarwood arc? something that revolves entirely around percy’s backstory? or is it so beloved that they made a whole animated series about it? on a smaller scale—because of nott, the mighty nein left the empire & trekked into xhorhas; because of fjord, the mighty nein went & became pirates & explored sunken ruins, or went to uthodurn & nearly fought a dragon to make him a cool sword.

characters get their time to shine. it can’t always be about everyone all the time—matt gives a player a gift & the whole table comes together to react to that gift, following the player it was intended for. that’s the fun of storytelling together, that’s the fun of building characters & handing it over to your DM, the expectation that for a session, a couple of sessions, a small arc, you are the main character. your story matters. that’s what this is for imogen/laura—it’s at once a story beat for everyone, one of those pivotal moments where they realise they’re outmatched, but it’s also a turning point for imogen where we don’t know where she goes next. im sure that it also functions as a way for matt to introduce whatever lore he has about ruidis born up his sleeve for us.

AM thinking of writing a fic for this

the whole premise is a best friends to lovers for mark in highschool and for some strange reason your friend group has a running joke that you guys would look cute together or that mark likes you. but then you never rly know ... BUT LET ME KNOW IF U WOULD LIKE THIS IDK idk

It’s movie night at Jaemin’s house, and everyone’s gathered together to watch Midsommar- Everyone’s on the couch save for you, Mark and Minji, who had no choice but to sit on the floor.

“It’s so cold,” you complain, and Mark, without missing a beat, dramatically stretches his arm upwards, before beginning to place it around you.

But before he actually pulls you in closer to him, he stops, retracting his hand back into himself to scratch his head in pretense. The laughter that erupts from all your friends watching just bursts the little bubble of thoughts you were in, and you gather yourself quickly enough to laugh along, and hide the disappointment that almost rises to your face. You shove him away playfully, and he’s laughing so hard that it kind of hurts how much he’s playing into this.

“No, but really, can we turn up the AC, or something?”

“Hold on, I’ll get you a sweater.” Jaemin stands and disappears into a room to get one, Minji running to steal his seat, and there are a million thoughts running through your mind, yet this one seems to be the only one you can focus on: if Mark shows any signs of irritation from this- just a huff of annoyance, or a purse of lips, or anything that remotely resembles an eye roll- maybe it’s a sign that you have hope that he actually likes you that way. Just maybe. You don’t know where you’ve gotten this idea, but maybe all the Rom-Coms and Romance Novels have just indoctrinated you to believe that jealousy means he cares.

If he’s indifferent to it…. then maybe you should be re-evaluating everything that you have ever thought about Mark and the interactions you have with him. Because, damnit, he’s one of your closest friends, and maybe you’re just crazy for thinking he would ever like you like this.

“Boooooo. You should’ve offered your sweater, Mark!” Donghyuck on the couch behind Mark, and tsks when he flicks at his head.

“What? No way! I’m cold too, and Y/N doesn't deserve to get her clumsy hands on any of my clothes, she’d probably find some way to get it dirty.” He huffs, and you guess that’s all you have to know about what he feels about you.

“One, that was so unprovoked, and two, totally untrue! It literally has only happened once.”

Mark’s been asking you to come study at the library a few times every weekend ever since the new term started. Alone. With only him. Him only.

The first time, you had asked him if anyone else was coming along, and he said all the other guys weren’t free- something about Jaemin and Haechan and Student Council, and Jeno with his girlfriend- then you asked Ryujin and Minji, and they were (very unfortunately) busy too.

So you had no choice but to go and accept an offer to sit, for a good five hours, with your best friend and your bubbling feelings for him. Of course, you probably could’ve said no, but he probably would have pestered you into coming because he knows you’re free.

To be honest, it wasn’t all that bad: it really was just studying, and it was good since you were genuinely being productive, and it’s better than being cooped up at home completely alone.

Then he asked you the next week, and then the next week, and then it just compounded into multiple study sessions (that he kept jokingly calling study dates, which, just, ugh) that were too helpful for you to say no to. Sometimes, the others tagged along too, but not without teasingly voicing their skepticism about third-wheeling the both of you.

And you continue to go, since hanging out with Mark is fun anyways, and your study breaks are filled with watching stupid YouTube videos and competing on Minesweeper, which he hasn’t actually won yet, and complains that your average time is too high to actually beat. He kicks at your leg from underneath the table when you use your phone for too long, and you stare at him in annoyance whenever he starts shaking his leg so violently that the entire table vibrates with him.

Your relationship, in the sense of being associated with one another and not actually being in a relationship together, with him is conflicting, confusing, and complex, especially because everytime you think it’ll be awkward around him, the nervousness just melts away because of how comfortable you actually are with him.

Also because you pep-talk and psyche yourself in the mirror whenever you go for bathroom breaks. Especially on the days where you sit across from him instead of beside him, and stare at his pretty hands twirling his Apple Pen, or accidentally lock eyes and he scrunches his face at you. Or when he comes all the way across the table to your side to peek at whatever you’re doing, or to whisper into your ear his help for the Math question you posed him, his face so incredibly near yours, that you almost get a shock when you turn to look at him.

(Okay, maybe you weren’t as cool as you were with him as you thought you were.) On these days you have to go just to smile all the giddiness out of your system before you meet him just to get ready and steel yourself for the rest of the day.

Nothing could ever prepare you to expect whatever just happened, though.

It started off as a normal day, and you saw his string of texts when you woke up.

Then you met and got lunch as usual, and then headed to the library, and then started work, and it almost felt as if it was like clockwork. He’s sitting next to you today, and Mark keeps swearing whenever he loses on Minesweeper. You ask him how to twirl your pen the way he does, and he holds your hand through it, literally, gripping your fingers to turn the pen after multiple failed attempts that made your pen drop with a clang onto the table. This lady from across the table keeps staring daggers at the two of you and you can’t exactly blame her because of how much of a ruckus you’re causing, laughing whenever you can’t get it right.

And now he has his head on your shoulder. Yeah. What the fuck.

You’re both trying to get the Statistics homework done today, but neither of you can get past a question about Agatha and her unnecessary calculations for how many different ways she can arrange her employees in a meeting room.

It’s six-forty and you’ve both finished the rest of the questions and have returned to this one for a good thirty minutes but to no avail, and after another failed attempt to get to the answer, Mark lets out a whispered cry, shifts his rolling chair closer to yours, and plops his head onto your shoulder.

“Oh my God, man, Agatha should just let them sit wherever they freaking want! What is wrong with her?!”

You’re too stunned to even reply or laugh- the library is freezing cold but you’re sure you’re about to combust, there’s heat rising to your face yet also a shiver running down your spine. Your heart is really going to beat out of your chest if he doesn’t pull away soon, and you’re praying he can’t hear or feel the palpitations.

He rolls his head around your shoulder even more, and he shifts even closer to almost snuggle into your neck. Oh my God, how dare he. “Dude, your shoulder bone is so sharp. That hurt.”

“Then stop leaning on it, jeez.” You take this opportunity to shrug him off just before you really explode at the contact.

He pouts at you with the cutest fucking face ever, and you sneer, and he complains about how he’s hungry and that you should just call it a day, and you agree, because you don’t know if you can stand anymore of his unintentional flirting in one day.

The signals Mark gives are so incredibly mixed and convoluted and sometimes you wonder if you should really just ask him. It’s hard enough swimming lost in a sea of your feelings for him, and it’s even harder when he catches you off guard with waves that almost make you drown and fall further in like, but then also drains almost all your hope of him ever reciprocating.

hi dreamie ! this may be a long shot but if you still do some idol chart readings, is there anything in kai's chart that makes him tend to refer to himself in the third person? could it be perhaps in relation to what you said before about him being being rly aware of public perception vs being a v private person so he's putting some distance with himself or smth? heyyy!! i still do idol chart readings i've just been so busy lately rippp (i have a few txt readings in my drafts that i completely forgot about omg) but this is actually really interesting!

in my prev reading for kai, i mention his moon sq mars aspect and how kai is generally a private person who may wear a "mask" or put on a front to hide his true feelings. and very briefly, a minor aspect: venus quincunx ascendent, to mention how he might view public perceptions of himself; which i'll be talking a bit more about here...

kai has his 8H libra venus at 8° quincunx his pisces ascendant at 7°. in astrology, to have two planets quincunx each other, simply means that they don't get along, they sorta contradict each other. it's a 'hard' or 'negative' aspect like the major aspect square. look at it like this: kai's libra venus [planet of love, appreciation n acceptance] is at an odds with his pisces ascendant [simply, himself]. it's said that those with venus quincunx ascendant might overcompensate in order to be accepted by others. i think because kai is a pisces rising and a libra venus, he might be more susceptible to the opinions of others, especially given his career.

now bare with me because things are a bit jumbled in my mind n I'm trying my best to get my point across: kai practically lives for his privacy (scorpio moon + pisces rising), however his job is his literal life (while 10H is career, I'm looking towards his 6H sun—which is work, specifically working and doing things for others; reminding the class of kai's sun square moon: 6H sun (work n training) at odds with his 9H moon (comfort) though I think his moon being in the 9H (traveling, culture, learning, etc) might soften this/making it all worth it). thus, my conclusion is that kai might play up the character (being an idol) a little bit to feel more accepted as he might not be totally comfortable with being entirely himself, yet. thinking that he might slip away from his 'self' to become what others want him to be. [i think i remember hearing a story about how during training he would 'play up' being cute n everything because staff said something about it—though please correct me if im wrong about that]

Tbh bb bc this blog is a side blog, I don’t follow any royal blogs (haven’t done for years, it’s not bc I don’t want to it’s bc I didnt want my main being connected to this one when I reopened it). So I only visit the ppls blogs that I actually wanna see. That means I don’t see a full view of the fandom so I can’t rly answer that. I think bc cancer touches a lot of ppls lives, it makes it more real and they wanna defend k8 more. I know for one someone I know was diagnosed recently so K8s news had me reacting in a way I wouldn’t a month ago maybe. I also think it’s been a rly long time for some ppl in this fandom, like 13 years of discussing her. So that’s a pretty long “relationship”. Idk it’s hard to say bc I don’t know who ur talking about (u can tell me and I won’t post the name if u want). But I can’t say ur heartless, we all react differently and as long as ur not being an asshole about it, ur fine! Xo

I feel like Yukio would just be dumbfounded and have a lot of internal thoughts like, ‘am I not good enough?’ Or, ‘am I a bad brother?’

Mephisto would obviously think this was absolutely hilarious and find this manhunt really entertaining."

I'll be honest, this addition is pure GOLD. And I agree with every bit of it. Everyone is either confused, angsty, amused or stressed. Arthur is all three.

Oh poor, poor Arthur. He basically became the single father of a teenager. Now don't get him wrong, he loves Rin like a brother. But for the love of god he's exhausted. Not only can he remember jackshit, he also believes they have possibly hundrets of enemies out for their blood. Obviously those enemies are just other exorcists trying to help them but Arthur doesn't know that. And as if that's not enought he also has to protect Rin who is too kind for his own good.

Yet another reason for why Arthur is going to have grey hair before even comming close to being an old man is because demons are still after them. Only they also forgot what demons even are or how to defeat them. And Rin, obvious , kind and inoccent Rin, wants to pet them all. Arthur can't remember but he's pretty sure he never ran so fast in his life than when Rin thought it was great to try to befriend some weird animal that looked like it had rabbies. (he swears to god he's about to cuff Rin to his arm to make sure he doesn't accidentally kill himself)

While Arthur tries to navigate his life while trying to protect his a kid, Yukio has one hell of an angsty time. It starts out bad enought when Rin is missing with Yukio blaming himself but when he and Arthur show up again ? Oh it get's SO MUCH WORSE. Ofcourse Yukio goes out to help and get his brother back. There he also meets Jeremiah trying to get Arthur back. Things go south when they meet Rin and Arthur again and they have no idea who Yukio or Jeremiah are. Jeremiah is expecially taken aback when Arthur who is well known for hating anything that has to do with demons shields Rin with his own body as if they would hurt them.

As @junkopoprocks already thought off, Yukio thinks Rin replaced him. He has real issues , mostly because he can understand Rin. He thinks back on how he acted with Rin in the past and realises that he's been horrible to his brother. He goes as far to beg Rin to please return back with him and that he will be better. Jeremiah at first assumes Arthur is posessed or smth. He has no idea what in all that's holy is going on with his brother. Jeremiah asks Arthur why he's protecting a litteral spawn of Satan , Arthur asummes he just wanted to insult Rin and not that the other meant it litteraly. The amnesiac proceeds to vigorously defend Rin and calls Jerimiah a "child hating , bitter old man". The other was so confused he didn't have time to react when Arthur grabben Rin and fled in light speed.

Rin doesn't always understand what is going on. He just relies on Arthur for the thinking. But that doesn't mean he is completly helpless, he tries to support the older any way he can and often makes first contact with people. He also makes sure Arthur still eats and sleeps since he tends to negelct himself in favor of making sure Rin is okay and trying to gather clues about who they are. (Finding out who they are is acctualy rly hard since they think that the Exorcists are enemies and thus avoid anything vaguely looking like them. They pretty much just travel around without a real plan and asks around and look for clues)

After they woke up and figured out their names Arthur took all the paper money he had and got them some basic camping equiptment. They travel around by riding trains or busses (not necessarily legally) and camp outside in the nights. That way they find out that Rin is great at cooking even with limited ingridients. The younger takes over taking care of their food, mostly because Arthur is shitty at doing so but also to take atleast a little off of Arthur's plate.

The whole idea is fluffy crack with a little Yukio angst. Arthur and Rin grow close and Arthur has like these nice little moments between all the stress where Rin maybe falls asleep on his shoulder or when Rin does his best to make a good meal for them and Arthur decides that everything he does to protect Rin and help him is worth it. Meanwhile Jeremiah gets more confused by the day of why Arthur acts like this and Yukio angsts over "driving away" his brother.

1. What memory would your OC rather just forget?

xarrai:

see i could give you a cop out answer and just say The First Sixteen Years Of Her Life. but that isn't entirely true. there's an element there of like.... yes she would like to forget, but the memory is the only thing standing between her and becoming the exact thing she hates. she clings to the memory of her early life in mulmaster because she fears she'll give in to temptation without it. and also like. who would she be without it? there's no "before" for her, she was like four or five when the zhentarim bought her, she doesn't Have any memories that aren't bane's church or what came after so. idk. it's complicated. all of them and none of them?

or, funny answer: one time she fully poured wine down the front of nysene eomane’s dress at a party. it was like 85% an accident. and while xarrai is stunningly hard to embarrass that one DID get her (partially because nysene’s brother would not let her live it down)

oh man. when ieriyn was like 11 or 12 he got into an argument with his older brother that resulted in a wild surge that burned down a wing of their manor and left his brother badly injured. thankfully the fire was contained fairly quickly and ieriyn and his brother were the only ones hurt (and ieriyn not even all that badly) it was far from his first wild surge (that was when he accidentally turned his older sister and one of the cats on their estate into ducks when he was really young) but it was the first one that made him really truly afraid of what he's capable of.

funny answer for ieriyn as well: the time he got caught trying to sneak back into his house drunk after sneaking out with a couple of friends when he was like 16 and one of house staff found him in the bushes trying to figure out how to cast levitate to get back to the second floor window. the staff member ratted him out to his dad and he was in trouble for weeeeks

25. What is your favorite thing about your OC?

xarrai is my baby i love everything about them and they've never done anything wrong in their whole life. no notes. okay but honestly though, and i guess this is less about Them specifically but whatever, i really like the way their story fits into the plotline of the game and into the world as it stands. i really lucked into it honestly bc i was making shit up as i went but they slot so well into the world and mesh well with the party and their personal story feels just similar enough to the other characters' that it works. and part of that is because i have just stolen a bunch of pieces of the durge plot and made it bane flavored so of course it's going to work, but i also only did that because that's the direction their story was starting to take anyway. also i love bards i love little guys who make music and tell stories because i'm a little guy who makes music and tells stories :) i don't talk about that part of xar's life as much on tumblr dot com bc i'm busy talking about them fucking nasty or arguing with astarion but like. they truly do love playing music and singing songs and telling stories and writing their own poetry and ballads it's and they looooove the attention of performing tbqh :) i love bards :))))

i love wild magic i love wild magic i love wild magic. also i love the shape his arc is starting to take and i'm having so much fun getting him there. i started with a general idea of where ieriyn starts (selfish spoiled rich kid and black sheep of his family) and where he's going to end up (someone who is willing to blow himself up With gale in the final battle (this may or may not happen for his canon. but the important part is he will be willing to do it.)) and left myself a big space to play in in the middle and rly let his rolls drive his story and now i'm getting to Discover Who He Is. also. i love wild magic. i loooove when magic is big and scary and dangerous and unpredictable and i love when its wielders rise to the challenge instead of trying to contain it :^)

10. What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?

xarrai:

i am constantly constantly constantly rotating the ascended!astarion/absolute!xarrai au in my mind. granted i have basically no idea how the absolute ending actually goes because i haven't played or watched it myself so it's all like vague squishy ideas and Vibes in my head but i am deeeeeply obsessed with it. i'm not sure what series of events would have to happen for it to actually play out, because honestly with xarrai's anger issues and codependency with astarion i think the most likely outcome of him ascending is them flying off the handle and more or less forcing him into killing them (a very "if we can't be better than what made us i'm at least gonna try to take you down with me" vibe) BUT. assuming they do not. i could see xarrai looking at astarion's ascension as more or less confirmation that they also have no chance at true freedom and they may as well embrace what they have and so they turn back to bane. there's lore here i am Not going to explain bc it would take like four paragraphs of rambling but the crux of it is like. they Are in canon offered a chance to regain bane's favor in act 3 so there is precedent here and a way it would work plot wise for their story i think.

anyway i think they don't actually tell anyone Aside from gortash that they are back on their banite bullshit and they do actually let astarion turn them because they know it will lull him into a false sense of security and let him feel like he's won. they know the tadpole will preserve their free will and they're not too concerned about actually being vampire spawn because they Have A Plan. so they play the long game and let astarion believe he owns them and start playing out all his little power fantasies until they get to the morphic pool. the whole time they're telling everyone they're going to kill gortash when they get there and by the time anyone realizes they're lying it's too late :) and then. idk what happens bc idk how the absolute ending works other than gortash beefs it at some point. (which works well bc xarrai was DEFINITELY gonna betray him asap. he's a weak tyrant if he's willing to share that power w/anyone but bane himself. that's Tyranny 101) but the general idea is that xarrai and astarion become each others' worst nightmares and are locked in a toxic power struggle astarion has no hope of winning while the world around them descends into chaos. they both embrace what they were meant to be and make everything infinitely worse for it. :) in my ideal world there would be a way for xarrai to use the netherbrain to usurp bane himself and then destroy the brain after (or maybe for them to just recover and reforge the crown of karsus on their own and skip becoming the absolute/using the brain entirely who knows) and it would be a kinda god gale situation because like. the important part for them is not dominating every realm it's destroying what hurt them and on the top of that list is 1. bane and 2. astarion. and i think the dynamic that would exist between god of tyranny!xarrai and ascended!astarion would be like. delicious. he prayed to all the gods and none answered except the one he made with his own two hands. :) he thought he could own them and instead he's at their mercy :) they put their faith in him as their second chance at freedom and when he let them down they decided to make the same choice he did :)

as a bonus i think gale would be fucking livid if xarrai gave him their whole big speech about Not Becoming A God only to literally turn around and become a god. like that would be really fucking funny.

i'll be so real right now i have no idea. i haven't even finished the game with him yet so i feel like i need to like. figure out what his canon actually is before i'm thinking too hard about AUs BUTTTT i could see a very stereotypical coffee shop au working for gale/ieriyn. i am deeply not a coffee shop au girlie but barista ieriyn trying his best to seduce professor gale when he comes in every morning for his latte could be so cute. ieriyn 100% has "i'm going to get that old man pregnant" energy that i don't get to explore enough in canon because he's busy being traumatized or whatever :/ (not that gale is an old man. but larian isn't giving ieriyn many options for beautiful older men to lure in with his autistic tboy swag and prettyboy looks so he will have to count)
