Ash and Darby's story arcs explore two different flavours of parent-instilled/worsened internalized ableism.
Ash
Ash developed mental illness as a child, while completely dependent on people who didn't believe it existed. Her parents decided she was "doing it on purpose" (and told her as much). Their treatment of her kept making her worse, and the worse she got the more they blamed it on her.
Ash's parents were the only people she was really close to throughout most of her life. Her anxiety (and eventually C-PTSD resulting from their actions) largely discouraged her from building relationships with anyone else. So, lacking strong examples to the contrary, she fully internalized everything they told her.
As she got older and used the Internet more, Ash learned about disability activism, including for mental illness. However, she doesn't apply it to herself. She's convinced she's the exception, someone who actually could have overcome her problems with a bit of effort.
Eventually, with help from people who understand her issues and let her talk about them, she gets out of this mindset.
Darby
Darby and her father Cevare both have the same condition. Thing is, Cevare was never diagnosed and thinks all his symptoms are "normal". So he didn't bat an eye when Darby had them too.
Neither did Darby, for a long time. If her father said random pain and joint subluxations were something that everyone experienced, then it must be normal. If bruising easily was just a "little quirk" she'd inherited from him ("like how you got your pink hair from your mother", as he explained it), surely it didn't warrant further investigation.
This keeps Darby from seeking help for a long time. Even when she's walking stiff-legged and trying to avoid bending down because her knees keep shifting out of place, she still kind of believes it's "just a thing that happens to people sometimes"* and doesn't consider it worthy of mention.
When she finds out she has a connective tissue disorder, it takes her a while to accept that she is, in fact, disabled. Yeah, she's been diagnosed with a lifelong condition that requires accommodations and treatment, but being disabled is, like... a whole thing. Does she really count if she's been doing fine, never even suspecting anything, for most of her life? And if she's disabled, then Cevare is too, and it's just too weird to think in those terms.
Eventually she gets over it as well (less clear on how exactly).
*Well, this is true, but not in the sense she's thinking of.

people seriously pretending EEAAO is overrated suddenly bc it swept awards? it swept awards largely because it is very very very good. I cried like someone who's just had a religious revelation BOTH times I watched it bc it touched something raw and real and beautiful but it was also just very, very funny. everyone's performance kills and the concept is creative and interesting and doesn't distract from the emotional core. you guys are just contrarian.

i love the extras of dungeon meshi in how it fleshes out the world because they make it so much more evident how race affects every part of the story while avoiding the zootopia racism problem. like obv a main theme of the story is like, humanity and desire, 'to eat is to live', etc, but since the majority of it takes place in the dungeon isolated from society and thru the lens of laios, the racial aspects play out more like shadows on a wall for most of the story.
then in the extras we get comics like this
Tumblr media
which at a glance fleshes out the racial aspects via a character explaining the racial rules of universe - humans have x amount of bones, while orcs and kobolds have more. however, if u take it less straightforwardly, it points out how the concept of 'human' is a constructed concept in the world. the fact that there are different categories of human in different parts of the world based off of what types of humanoids occur there is already a demonstration of this. in response, the bones explanation seems to kabru and the characters as an objective way of measuring humans vs nonhumans.
but obv, when the culture was deciding what humanoids were humans and nonhumans, they weren't blindly analyzing skeletons and then deciding. just visually, one can glean that orcs and kobolds look less like the ingroup of tallmen, elves, dwarves, gnomes, etc. the bones explanation appears as a justification for that immediate prejudice under a scientific guise - I'm sure that one could come up with the same number of physical differences between a gnome and an elf that they would find between a tallman and an orc. it sounds a lot better to say 'well, an orc has 230 bones while a human has 206' then 'well, an orc looks ewwww yucky yucky to me while a human looks normal'.
and what i like abt the comic is that the characters take the explanation at face value for the most part. when a contradiction is brought up in the oni, kabru can neatly slot them into the predetermined number of bones framework. bc that's kinda how it works irl - there r cultural prejudices that we can posthumously justify, and if we find something outside of it, we can twist it to fit into our predetermined binary. however, since the reader does not live in a world where there are orcs and kobolds to be prejudiced against, we can see that flaw in the cultural logic. when the party encounters the orcs, the number of bones has no bearing on their humanity. They r shown to be cliquish and distrusting of outsiders, but not any more than the elves are later in the story.
tldr dungeon meshi worldbuilding is so good

honestly love when artists draw copious amounts of fanart for a character and then start adding more and more personal touches or headcanons to how they depict them and then just change their name and adopt them as an original character. its like watching nature heal in real time

"For a moment or two I could see nothing, as the shadow of a cloud obscured St. Mary’s Church and all around it. Then as the cloud passed I could see the ruins of the abbey coming into view; and as the edge of a narrow band of light as sharp as a sword-cut moved along, the church and the churchyard became gradually visible. Whatever my expectation was, it was not disappointed, for there, on our favourite seat, the silver light of the moon struck a half-reclining figure, snowy white."

katsuki wakes up to little fingers walking up the curve of his bicep.
his son is sitting there at the head of the bed, right next to him, waiting, and when katsuki opens one bleary eye to peek up at him, the little boy very casually says,
"hey, dad."
it's the middle of the day. katsuki's been on night patrol for the past week and it's, unfortunately, starting to finally catch up to him; through the first few days, he was able to keep constant with you and your son's schedule, even if he was exhausted, but he'd hit the couch the minute he'd come inside this morning and, truthfully, he doesn't remember getting up for the bed at all.
when katsuki gives a little grunt of acknowledgement, the little boy continues, scooching close enough that his knees are pressed against his dad's arm. "um, can i play that jumping game on your phone?"
even half-asleep, katsuki snorts. there's a small puddle of drool that's gathered on the pillow under his head, and he frowns, stretching out his arms before rolling onto his back. "not right now."
the little boy lets out a heavy sigh, as if the answer has greatly disappointed him, but he says, "okay."
katsuki nearly falls back to sleep—even though his son scoots closer, until they're touching again—but he raises his head at the soft sound of your voice.
"hey, c'mon," you murmur from the foot of the bed, holding out your arms even if the little boy is too big to be babied anymore. "let daddy sleep, come sit with me while i wait for your stinky clothes to finish washing."
you're pretty, katsuki thinks, taking a long look at the jeans hugging your hips, how the color of your shirt compliments your skin, and he cements it to the forefront of his mind as he drops his head back down. it's easier to relax like this: thinking of you, gentle and safe inside your home.
but the little boy at his side whines, grouchy enough that katsuki peeks one eye at him again. "no," he grumbles, scooting into the crevice of his dad's armpit when you reach a little further for him. "i wanna take a nap, too."
you let out a little sigh. "oh, you do? little boy, you never want to take a nap."
"yes i do!"
"hey," katsuki croaks, frowning at his son for the arguing—and the boy knows it; he shuts his lips, casting you a quick look before laying back, head resting on katsuki's shoulder. "'s'fine," he tells you, shaking his head when you pout at him apologetically. "he says he's gonna nap, he's gonna nap."
your son nods, the soft of his hair ruffling against katsuki's nose. "mommy can nap, too."
"yeah," katsuki pats the bed through his yawn, dropping his head back one final time, as his eyes shut. "can nap, too."
"mommy has things to do," you press a kiss to katsuki's forehead, and then lean over to press another onto your son. "but you gotta sleep, okay? no goofing around."
katsuki feels the nudge of his son's nose as he turns his head into him, hair tickling him again as he nods—and for a while, he's still, quiet enough that katsuki can mostly fall back to sleep.
but after a few minutes, he can hear the soft sounds of his lips moving as he talks to himself, whispers little stories katsuki knows you've told him before, and he even lightly touches his fingers to the scar beneath katsuki's eye; poking at the ones on his shoulders; the edge of the one on his chest, peeking up over the blanket.
the little boy doesn't sleep, and katsuki doesn't either, really, but—he doesn't mind too much.

The Fall of the House of Usher is many things and I'm making a conscious choice to not scream about every single one of them rn, but what left me staring at a wall in tears is just... kindness. Death was kind. She gave every choice, every reason to stop. She would take these kids anyway but she also regretted having to take them like that. She cared when nobody else would, even though they kept making the wrong choices.
She's never cruel for cruelty's sake. She wasn't cruel to Lenore. She just sent a child to sleep as lovingly as she could, with kind words and kinder touch.
And I don't even know how to express the absolute heartbreak with blinding warmth among the cracks, when Death herself kneels before one man, worst man, honest man, who refused her offer – and thanks him with such respect.
Mike Flanagan, you fucking did it again. Carla Gugino, you... I don't even have words for you. That's a whole-ass masterpiece of human soul, meaning, and searching right there.

If I had to describe the central message of the Verdantland Trilogy, it would be “not everything is about humans”.
The villains, the “Verdantloggers”, are a group who wish to destroy the Verdantland. If you ask them, the forest is “too dangerous” because some of its life-forms are toxic and some will maul you if you get too close (same as any other place, really) and “largely useless” because only a small fraction of what lives there is useful to humans.
Of course, this view comes from an extremely anthropocentric, and what I would call “anthropo-separatist”, place. The Verdantloggers fail to realize that they are products of the same nature / phenomenon which gave rise to the life-forms they hate and fear, and any attempt to destroy the forest will ultimately end in harming themselves (and other life-forms they approve of).

i'm sorry for talking about this yet again but i literally never see ANYONE mention the fact that photoposts are fucking gone when they're complaining about tumblr updates.
(in case you didn't know-- you literally cannot make photo type posts anymore, which is really frustrating for anyone who posts photo/gifsets in a custom theme)
