The fallout show isn’t NOT anticapitalist, but it’s anticapitalist in that way that a lot of recent media goes for, where it makes vague gestures towards ideas like ‘There Is Wealth Inequality, Perhaps’, or ‘maybe a few dozen people having more money than god Isn’t A Good Thing, Actually’. But ultimately it kinda just tiptoes around commenting on anything systemic by offloading the blame onto its shadowy cabal of the ultra-rich, and turning the wastelander underclass into a constant running joke that the audience is expected to laugh along at. Which like. Fine. That’s honestly more than I was expecting I guess. But bad-appling fallout feels like missing the point extra hard, given how much it absolves the US of its role in everything, up to and including literal nuclear armageddon

hi penny! im sure im not the first person to ask this, but- is there a reason the psychonauts dub didnt pan out? super excited for the kingdom hearts dub!! just curious as to why that particular dub idea wasn't seen through?
it was a few reasons! i honestly just lost a lot of steam for it once i started recording the footage. if i had to guess it was a combination of life circumstances not really being Ideal for me at the time, but also the more obvious setback is just that.... the game doesn't really NEED the fandub treatment??? at all?
not to say that any game ever "NEEDS" our stupid bits layered on top of it in the most literal sense, but there are certain dynamics when it comes to picking a game for the format that i have to take into account. what's the tone of the original work, what is the dialogue pacing like, how story heavy is it even to begin with, etc. Psychonauts has the disadvantage (specifically for dubbing purposes) of being a game that already feels almost like a parody of itself. it's EXTREMELY funny just on its own. RTF as a format, i think, is most effective when the source material's original tone and dramatic weight is juxtaposed with improvisational humor in SOME way. Sonic games have a heightened otherwordly shonen vibe that becomes uncannily hilarious when paired with the inherent candidness of improv. Until Dawn and RE2 are dark, atmospheric horror titles that pair well with improv purely through the GULF in tonal dissonance being inherently funny. Spider-Man is a superhero blockbuster story, and RTF lessens the scope EXCEEDINGLY in incredibly dumb and endearing ways (instead of peter needing an anti-serum to cure a deadly plague ravaging the city, he needs it to keep himself from turning into a table). And so on and so forth.
I basically just ended up feeling like there's really not much we could do to bring value to the project of a Psychonauts dub that wouldn't be energy better spent on games that were a better fit overall. Cause, yknow, at the end of the day these already take SO long to come out. I really gotta be economical with the game choices nowadays.

This scene with the assault on Nami goes on for several pages, and I'd forgotten that it's intercut with an Usopp fart gag...which also goes on for several pages. And while One Piece is not above a bit low-brow humor from time to time, the extent shown here is usually regulated to an SBS. Even removed from the tonal dissonance of the scene, it just isn't funny.
It is so utterly bizarre to see how poorly the subplot with Nami and Absalom (and later Sanji) is handled compared to the Cindry and Hogback stuff when the underlying issues they're exploring are quite similar

what is it about javert's death scene that is so hard to depict tactfully. the stage adaptation and concerts manage fine. the 2018 miniseries, for all of its faults, handles it very well. but in the 1998 version he handcuffs himself and falls backwards like he's getting baptized, and it's literally in the finale of the trailer as if it's this triumphant moment. in the 2012 version there's a million quick cuts of him falling which serves to build anticipation only for him to hit the water with a deafening crack that never fails to make me laugh. in the 1978 version he does a fucking frontflip accompanied by a trumpet blast. that's THREE funny adaptations of a very serious scene (and those are only the ones i'm aware of). i feel bad laughing at this shit but like come ON dude!! you can't have your antagonist do a sick flip as he kills himself and NOT expect me to laugh at the complete tonal dissonance of the act!!

thought abt that actor au a little more. i just think theyre neat
some fun facts below the cut
raph’s real eye gets a contact lens while the “krang eye” ie the one in the goop is CG. the eyepiece can be removed separate from the actual makeup to allow him to not have to wear it between takes and also so it can be cleaned easier
both donnies prescription lenses and raph’s fashion ones give them headaches. some days its worse than others
casey jr can, in fact, cry on command
jokes about mikey and leo dying are near constants on set
sometimes krang prime will do other peoples lines in his Evil Voice (tm). his favorite ones are mikey’s cause of how generally positive they tend to be, so the tonal dissonance is really funny
originally casey Sr was gonna have the Casey part in the film, but she got busy with another project, so her nephew took the role instead. they ended up rewriting a bit of the script around that
“future leo”‘s height difference was achieved mostly by having leo stand on  a box whenever he and casey jr were in the same shot, although for the few shots where both their full bodies were visible it was a mix of editing and some carefully placed camera angles (think like the lord of the rings movies)
krang prime tends to not wear the armor when he’s just out and about (he considers it “chafing”) but he can’t leave it unattended for too long or one of the turtles will try to steal it. donnie almost succeeded and leo did. mikey was too short to actually fit it well enough to move it.

thinking about Autocracy as the backstory of the Rodimus we see in MTMTE works surprisingly well in very broad strokes, given the tonal dissonance between the two iterations, it's true; understanding the Rodimus we see in MTMTE as being in part driven by a sense of inadequacy relating to very real prior experiences and perceived failures that he refuses to like, explain to anyone as context for his actions and emotional bad decisions... it works surprisingly smoothly in an abstract sense. has some real pathos to it too.
however. it does make me think about the idea of everyone on the LL who largely just knows him through the events of MTMTE and reputation as an impulsive asshole and so on. finding out that Rodimus' pre-war experience was very specifically as the leader of, basically, a terrorist cell, and a very successful one by certain metrics, and honestly i think that would be really fucking funny i'm not gonna lie. drift fully did not realise this at all. he has been assuming rodimus was like, an early middle class autobot sympathizer who went straight to high command or something and now he feels kind of privately guilty oops.

Lady of the Shard is a comic about an acolyte in love with the goddess she serves.
Note: This comic contains content that may be objectionable to some readers.  Discretion is advised.
[Spoilers] Content warnings include:
body horror imagery sexualized manipulation/mind control forgiveness for an abusive character
happy femslash february here's a... webcomic-type thing with a lot of pages, but I'd clock reading time as definitely probably under half an hour (?). it's a classic, ggdg released it in 2016 and it kind of defies description. like the summary says, lady of the shard is about an acolyte that falls in love with a goddess. they are also in space. the art is very unique and super cool--ggdg formatted it for fullscreen desktop itchio viewing, and they use the medium VERY well with color and composition. there's a lot of truly superb tonal dissonance with serious life-or-death stakes and the acolyte being just a little guy that endears herself to like. every powerful woman she meets. it's so funny. it's SO funny. I think all the time about the end where [redacted] just goes 'wow you're pretty stupid huh.' lady of the shard is a very striking story that posits: sometimes being cute and stupid is enough. if it's one you can read I definitely recommend checking it out.
regarding the warnings, heed them in general? it gets somewhat heavy but I'd say the tone overall lighthearted without what I would consider gratuitous focus or depiction of the content warnings. I'll also clarify that the abusive character that gets forgiven is not the love interest.
ggdg is currently on tumblr at pallisia but that account isn't centered on their work as ggdg--at the moment they're working on a vn, which I'm looking forward to ^^

Legacy is not Legend of Korra
Was listening to the Teen Talk today (I want to know about SEASON 3 TELL ME ABOUT SEASON 3) and Anthony was talking about like "oh everyone didn't like season 2 as much as season 1, just like Avatar the last Airbender and the Legend of Korra, and I'm okay with that". And sorry to have hard let's play podcast opinions on main but I don't think of it as a Legend of Korra; I think of it as a TAZ: Amnesty.
And the thing in my opinion about TAZ: Balance and TAZ: Amnesty is that Amnesty was better. I know this will be controversial but I genuinely think this is true. TAZ Balance was, while amazing, also consisted of Griffin McElroy pulling together a fantastic finale out of his ass from the irreverent gaffs and bits his brothers and father had been making for 30 ish episodes. Without that hard work and railroading on the DM's behalf, Balance would've become disjointed and aimless. This is fine, this happens, but it means that TAZ Balance is not the pinnacle of the show that many people make it out to be. Yes, it's what a lot of people started with, but the nostalgia often time overrides what it actual was, which was an insane disjointed ride that was brought together by the power of a DM's storytelling ability, not a masterpiece.
By season 2 of both shows, the players knew what they were doing from the gate, they had an established interpersonal dynamic, they made sure the world was set up before starting, they were still riding an emotional high while also cognizant of their problems the first time around. Which resulted in a season that - while chaotic - was consistent and focused from the start. This is not the same with TAZ Balance or Odyssey, because those they spent 20-40 episodes getting their improv/TTRPG footing, resulting in a lot of bits and goofs that, while funny and great for engagement, resulted in egregious detours and tonal dissonance. By season 2 of both TAZ and DnDads, they know enough to know what bits and goofs will hurt the story and characters, and therefore how to interact with them.
Yes, I will say that Legacy did not have as clean as a plotline than Odyssey, but I do think considering what Anthony and everyone else was working with, and the story they had decided to tell, that was going to happen. It was a hard sell from the beginning. And despite that, and despite all the dropped plotlines and Hermie dying and being forgotten, it was still pretty damn good, and a worthwhile addition to the series. And even if it wasn't, the players enjoyed it, and that matters a lot more than if we the audience think it was the best storytelling ever, because when it comes to let's plays like this, the game can exist without us the audience, and still give value to people's lives, it's just the creators' lives not ours. It's cool we get to watch, but we are not the goal so much as in other story telling mediums.

Does Gon have green hair or black hair? What colour are Killua's eyes? Which version of the anime do you like better?
Hi, thanks for the fun questions!
I like to go off the manga as the actual canon because that's the most direct way of seeing Togashi's intentions, rather than decisions made by an anime production crew. Togashi tends to color Gon's hair as either black or green or both. (Just some examples, there are many, many more out there of course!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of the frequency with which he uses green, I think it's fair to see Gon's hair as either a very dark green verging on black, or black at the roots and then green towards the tips. Of course not a "natural" hair color in our world, but neither is Killua's or that of multiple other characters, so I'm sure there's a wider variation of natural hair colors in the HxH world. (Obviously, this is a very common thing in anime and manga, haha.)
Togashi occasionally colors Killua's eyes brown for whatever reason, but he uses blue considerably more (and so does the colored version of the manga/both anime adaptations) so I definitely think blue is his intended choice for Killua's eyes.
As for which anime version I prefer--ultimately I prefer 2011 because it follows the manga much more closely and I absolutely love how it adapted Greed Island through Election Arc especially. It really hit its stride through those arcs. I've also written about issues I have with the characterization of Gon and Killua in the 1999 anime. That said, I think both series have pros and cons, and I do enjoy both and also have issues with both to some degree as well.
Some of 2011's pros and cons in my view:
Pros:
Follows more of the manga
Follows the manga much more closely than 1999
Amazing voice acting--particularly from Megumi Han and Mariya Ise (Gon and Killua), but there are tons of other phenomenal performances as well!
Really impressive animation in many scenes
Amazing production consistency for a series with as long of a run as it had, gets even better as it goes!
A nice soundtrack and OP/EDs
Overall polished and satisfying series and overall well-adapted from the source material
Even increases the emotional impact of some of the scenes
Added cute Gon and Killua content that I personally enjoy (Huncyclopedia, trailers, some added scenes, etc.)
Cons:
Doesn't leave out a lot, but what it does leave out is strange and frustrating (Kite stuff, Kon, Leorio scenes, etc.)
The aesthetic could be better IMHO. The character designs are fine, but I would have preferred them be just a bit more grounded in some cases (think like 1999). The color palette is very bright and cheery and looks somewhat fake or artificial in a way.
Feels overly light at the beginning when compared to the manga, oddly tonally dissonant with the later parts of the series and makes the series hard to recommend to some people IMHO
Some strange uses of the soundtrack, early in the series in particular
1999's pros and cons:
Pros:
Really gorgeous aesthetic and use of cel animation
Often amazing visual direction
I love the character designs overall, particularly as drawn by some of the specific animation directors who worked on it
Darker, immersive atmosphere
Some of the soundtrack is beautiful!
Some of the added content is neat and/or funny
LeoPika city
Nice OPs/EDs
Fun and sometimes goofy additional content like the musical, radio shows, etc.
Cons:
Adds a LOT of original content and changes things from the manga, definitely not all of which I like or agree with. Some of the additions/changes are frustrating to me.
Gon and Killua's characters and dynamic in particular are changed a fair bit in ways I don't always enjoy
Slooooowwww pacing
Too visually dark at times and can be hard to discern what's happening
Weird fight choreography at times
Even with how much I love that era of anime, it sometimes feels really dated--even older than it actually is, IMHO
These are overly simplified and I'm certain I'm leaving out a lot, but hopefully that gives you an idea of how I feel about each!
I sometimes wish we could have an anime that mixes together the pros from both and erases some of the cons. I feel like a theoretical blend of both versions would potentially be amazing, but at the same time I know we're very lucky as a fandom to have two anime adaptations with their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and I'm grateful for that!

literally the tonal dissonance in the perspectives of the main characters in the first episodes of shl is so funny bc it's like
zzs: I came to the jianghu to drink wine and die and I'm all out of fucking wine
wkx: they said be gay do crimes so I took it as a challenge
gx: hello world! I'm a real human girl!
zcl: I made friends with a beggar and now my family's dead

I think an interesting facet of the storytelling of Rick and Morty is the way that you’re intended to view Rick as a main character. It’s inarguable that both Rick and Morty are the main characters of this show (although, season 6 left Morty feeling a bit neglected, in my opinion). That being said, there are some things that I’ve found interesting regarding the way that Rick is intended to be perceived.
Tumblr media
Generally, when you’re consuming a piece of fiction, there is a compulsion to like the main character. At the very least, you’re used to empathizing with them on most things. Now, I’m obviously not trying to say that main characters can’t be bad people. That wouldn’t exactly be a generalizable statement. In fact, I think that it is a marvelous tool in fiction to follow a protagonist who is very obviously doing the wrong thing. Main characters are allowed to be villains.
I guess what I’m getting at here is that I’m used to liking main characters as people (not just their presence on the page or screen, dialogue, or personality) even when they’re consumed by a villain arc. I really loved the tonal shift that took place in the last episode of season 6 of Rick and Morty, because they really challenged me on that. They flipped the script, in a way.
(Disclaimer: I love Rick. I'm just angry with him at the moment.)
I think the only other piece of media I’ve consumed in the genre that I’ve felt executed this same earth-shattering disappointment of being denied a main character you like was Bojack Horseman. Bojack is the main character. He’s funny, charismatic, empathetic, tormented. As the viewer, you want to like him. You’re waiting for a reason to be able to love him, but… it’s never enough. It never comes. No matter how many grand gestures he attempts or how well the groundwork is laid out for a redeemable character, as he says, “You have to be dependably good.”
That fundamental dissonance is something that I can’t help likening to Rick.
All the pieces are there, but he can't quite put them together.
I’ve even found myself waiting for the moment Morty gets to deliver a confrontational monologue to Rick with the same emotional significance of Todd’s.
“You can’t keep doing shitty things, and then feel sorry for yourself like that makes it okay. You have to be better.”
I truly felt, for the first time, that I wasn’t supposed to like Rick. I was supposed to hate him. ‘A Rick in King Mortur’s Mort’ and ‘Ricktional Mortpoon’s Rickmas Mortcation’ were both episodes told quintessentially from Morty’s perspective. This meant that, of course, I loved Rick’s screen presence, what he offered the narrative, his dialogue, and comedy; but also that I found myself hating him as a person. I was so angry with him.
These were episodes told from the perspective of a victim, but with the gift of adult/outside perspective on the situation, which Morty doesn’t have.
It was truly a brilliantly executed narrative device. As the viewer, I was begging Morty not to go down into that lab. I was urging Morty to realize that none of this is normal or acceptable or something he had to go along with.
On the other hand, Rick is a deeply tormented character that is incredibly easy to empathize with, but it’s very clear that he’s not who you’re meant to be rooting for anymore.
With all of this in context, it makes more sense to me why Morty was pushed to the background to highlight Rick’s growth as a character. It’s a lot easier to empathize with an abuser- to feel bad for them and be on their side- when you’re consuming a narrative about their healing from their warped perspective. It’s a lot easier to like them as a person when you’re not facing the direct consequences of their actions on their victim.
I think that’s why there’s something so eerie about the ending of ‘Ricktional Mortpoon’s Rickmas Mortcation’ to me. It left me feeling nauseous and anxious; consumed by this anxiety from watching an unknowing child fall victim to circumstance, manipulation, and abuse.
Rick’s drunkenness in that final scene isn’t played for laughs, like in the pilot or ‘The Rickshank Redemption,’ nor is Morty’s hesitance. There’s this harsh reality that he isn’t frantically stumbling and running away in terror, like he did in earlier seasons. Instead, he’s just uncomfortable. This is something he’s used to. His normal is dealing with his grandfather’s drunken, violent mania. His normal is accepting his role- his destiny to be a sidekick.
This shot of Morty’s face is actually what reduced me to tears while watching the finale. There is something so unsettling about this look of, ‘Nothing has changed.’ Something heartbreaking.
Tumblr media
Rick’s role is to fuck Morty up, and Morty’s role is to forgive him for it.
And Morty is accepting his role…
For now.
It’s a harsh reality to accept that your beloved protagonist is destined to become a villain, and I can’t help but feel that we’ve rounded a corner with this series where Rick is fated to be the villain in Morty’s story.
Evil Morty and Rick Prime might be the facetious faces of the ‘big bad,’ but I have this sinking feeling that our bad guy has been hiding in plain sight for a long time- whether or not it’s his intention.
