How would you pitch watching Due South to someone who doesn't know it?

THE PREMISE: mountie from the northern reaches of canada goes to chicago to avenge dead dad (also a mountie), gets into buddy-cop shenanigans with a detective. said detective leaves the show in season 3 and gets replaced by another detective, shenanigans continue to ensue. there's also a dog. he's very cute.

THE PITCH: honestly, after being in the spn fandom and having most of popular culture awash with prestige shows (that are not spn, but like spn are typically dark and gritty and like killing characters off too) and having most of the popular media landscape try to cover their collective asses by having an aloof, 'you-can't-make-fun-of-this-because-we're-not-taking-it-seriously-ourselves' air, it was truly refreshing to sit down with a close friend of mine and check out this show.

i'm being completely serious when i say there's a certain je ne sais quoi about this show. is it because it's from the 90s? perhaps. is it because it's canadian? maybe. i wasn't even alive when this show first started airing and i'm not a media analyst. it basically takes the premise of the dudeley do-right cartoon and asks 'okay, but what if that was like, a real guy?' and fucking runs with it to the wildest heights. it's a comedy, but it's also so bizarre in some ways that it makes it a truly unique treat to watch. i love psych and brooklyn 99 for having a comedic procedural aspect, and neither of them are comparable in whatever it is that due south is doing.

there's honestly a lot of heart and soul in the entire show, and it has the ability to shift from just being comedic to having drama, mystery, and moments that pull at your heartstrings. it's a show that you can enjoy on the surface as a fun episodic show with fun characters and fun moments, but it also lends itself quite well to extrapolating on the characters, their motivations, etc. (and by etc i'm also including any shipping you might want to do).

i won't say it's a paragon of DEI, but again, i think it has a level of earnestness which makes any slip-ups it does have something i can kinda view with indulgence, versus shows that are making the same (or worse) mistakes 20+ years after this show already ended. these characters are treated with a level of dignity and respect, and i think overall the characterization is pretty consistent - there are some shifts happening between seasons 1-2 and 3-4, but i feel like it has more to do with budgets, a change in creative team, etc., versus writers not 'getting' certain characters.

there's also a lot of memorable episodes, scenes, bits. i think the latter seasons are more campy (my favorite) and some eps from s1 and 2 make for legitimately some great television. even the more mid episodes have something worthwhile, too. some of my fave moments in no order:

fraser (the mountie) saving and talking to? a rat in a strip club

also him going to a leather club

twice

and meeting a mountie in a latex version of his red serge uniform

using a tarp as a parachute

mafia egg conspiracy

aliens??

due south but make it silence of the lambs a little bit

performance arsonist

lake pirates? ghost ship?

also why are most of the major bad guys here doing some form of environmental crime? get your captain planet on ig, i'm into it

also fellow cops can also be bad guys. acab ig??

sick muscle cars eric kripke himself would've enjoyed. sometimes they get set on fire tho

due south but make it to wong foo thanks for everything

fraser running away from women so he doesn't have to kiss or interact with them

way too much time in closets, in general.

fellas is it gay to ask your new partner of one week maybe to pretend he's a woman so he can decide if he finds you attractive

there are red ships and green ships but no ships like partnerships :)

and to reiterate about the dog: there's a dog who's half wolf and all deaf and fraser can talk to him 'because he (the dog) reads lips'

his dead dad shows up too sometimes

anyway, it was really nice to watch this show for the first time, there are still moment i scream-laugh at because they're just so ridiculous and i'd never catch any other moments like that in any other show. i definitely see why there's still active fans for it thirty years later. there's also some wild shipping fodder here, which is at least partially why there are still fics getting written for these guys today. destiel if the cw weren't cowards etc etc. when i watched the finale, i cried tears of joy because while i'd miss the characters, they got an ending that actually seemed to fit, instead of it being a rush job, which is not unique to spn but, you know.

i like when the show portrays his difference in perspective as more than just the whole toxic masculinity colonizer thing

there wasnt ever really one Singular moment that made me go 'ok im obsessed now', it just kinda gradually happened and now here we are almost a year later

Ok here’s my criticism of the english: I think it needed to be either A Romance OR needed to have the romance entirely unspoken

#like a story that indulges much more in the romance and writes it more like a romance #i think they wanted to do a ‘connection transcends romance’ thing but instead it just feels like they’re copping out of Writing A Romance #vs if they had left the romance of it all unspoken (like mad max for example) then that would also have hit #like either write a romance and really commit or write a relationship that remains ambiguous #there were some stunning swoonworthy romantic moments! but the whole is not greater than the sum of the parts. to me #instead it reads less like they were trying to make an unrealized romance and more like the writers just couldn’t decide #I know this is a criticism that’s entirely arbitrary and just about my personal preferences but that’s what a blog is for #idk if I’ve even made sense here. that said overall pretty good show!#great to see a native american lead great to see the number of native americans in the cast and the number of unique characters they played #and the variety of perspectives they all had #and the cinematography was gorgeous #plot criticisms will have to wait until I’m feeling less lazy. but. I have plot criticisms for sure #very good watch tho #the english

alright besties. it took almost the whole session but i finally got myself to tell my therapist that i’ve been hurting myself

#it took the whole time for me to tell her so i didnt get any help :(#i doubt there's anything she could even really do to help tho #i've done lots of therapy cbt dbt etc and i only turned to sh because nothing else was working #i feel a lot better tho because i told her briefly about how i've struggled with sh for 6 years and it hasn't been bad in many years #but i have had small relapses on multiple occasions over the years #and i told her how i relapsed on sat and have done it again 5 times since sat #and i told her that i am going to do it again #it feels pretty good to not feel guilty or like im lying to my therapist and for someone other than me to know #i know this is not a great/healthy thing to post on here but im kinda really proud of myself for opening up a little bit to my therapist #it was kinda weird tho because it was the first time i ever talked about sh at least explicitly with this therapist before #she straight up asked me if i bled and i was like what of course #ik sh looks different for everyone but i just thought she had picked up on it because i showed her/mentioned the bandages on my arm #anyways i'm sorry for all this oversharing about this kind of stuff #tw self harm

it aint even october yet and im already kinda wanting to rewatch a season or two of american horror story

#i rewatched hotel last year #kinda thinking either freak show or roanoke this year #roanoke is kind of in the same boat as hotel #where when they were originally airing #i was just /pissed/ bc they weren't as good as the earlier seasons #and after rewatching hotel i came away liking it way more than i did back when it aired #mainly bc i still think the premise is strong as hell even if the execution wasnt all that great #so maybe roanoke will be the same #and freak show is up there too bc even tho i remember liking it when it originally aired #i remember virtually nothing about it asfhhdghdskfd #edit: it should be mentioned that i kind of loathe murder house now #for one i'm just so sick of it always coming back in one way or another #but also #tate langdon. just as a whole.#fuck him #fuck the horse he rode in on #and fuck the writers for portraying him as an uwu misunderstood baby who's actually a good person

#great book!#it's written really well #and the writing is so intelligent and witty and kind of pretentious but it fits with the setting of the story i think #just like... let's put six of the most dangerous and powerful and flawed characters in a library filled with enough knowledge to destroy #the whole world... the interactions between the characters was so good and AGH #as for my fav character i think that it has to be nico... he's kind of an idiot but also not... and he's so funny #istg i underlined so many of his lines in his chapters out of pure humor lmao #and callum's dark humor is funny too even tho he's questionable morally (or is he? that's the charm of the show!)#anyways... if ur a fan of fantasy and magic and dark academia i would recommend this book for u! it's a great read imo #can't wait for the second book ahhhhh #e.txt #yuereads

#It’s a great movie #The later part angered me tho as a Japanese american #Like.#They skipped over the actual bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki #Didn’t show it. Only mentioned it in the speech scene.#Didn’t even have the guts to show why the bomb was so bad #But to give them credit they DID talk about it.#Not enough for a whole ass 3 hour movie about the guy who created the bomb.#Anyqays #The sound design was SO GOOD. The soundtrack is amazing #I liked it. Hard watch but it was a good movie.#I didn’t watch it in a theater I watched at home

Oh man I have so much appreciation for voice acting you have no idea and I LOVE Tom Kenny like he does so many fuckin voices in everything but it doesn't bother me I cannot get tired of his voice it is so unique but also he has RANGE I can usually tell it's still him regardless but it's like crossing paths with an old friend everytime I notice it's him

#they got The Powerpuff Girls on Netflix now (I don't pay for it don't worry) and the whole time was basically me sitting and pointing #being like And that's Tom Kenny @ my Mom the entire time cuz holy shit he does a ton of voice work in that show it's incredible #I know Tara Strong does a buncha voice work as well she also does a ton of heavy lifting but I dunno #I can stomach her old work but smth about her current voice work is grating especially when she is doing Her Voice #if you know you know #it's somehow gotten sharper and louder it hurts to listen to #okay I didn't word the first part of that right I don't ''stomach'' her old work I'm not fighting for my life to watch it #I appreciate her old work and it doesn't hurt to listen to like Bubbles is great to listen to I have no issue listening to Bubbles #at least in the first season cuz that's where I'm at maybe it gets worse I dunno #but like I enjoy her voice for Bubbles it's sounds good does her character well #and y'know old Timmy Turner. Twilight Sparkle. old Raven. even Truffles! who I'm pretty sure is meant to be annoying and loud #I still have a great appreciation for her tho and all the work she does just kinda hard to listen to her work nowadays #I could also talk about various other voice actors whom I enjoy greatly but like those are the main ones I noticed in #the first season of The Powerpuff Girls as well as the Professors voice actor doin various voices as well #like if u just listen to the background characters it's mostly just the main cast using different voices which is common obviously #just fun to hear and point out when ya notice #OH btw just randomly remembered I was watching a buncha old Jack in the Box commercials and PRETTY SURE #pretty sure I heard Richard Horvitz in one of them randomly it hit me like a ton of bricks #not the first time I've noticed his voice work in the most RANDOM ass place #I could be totally wrong tbf it was a very short voice line but it sounded like him #oh man I really would love to do voice work but sadly that is one of the things I am not entirely confident in #I do not have confidence in my voice nor my acting capabilities but would be fun to fuck around in smth silly ig :P #you just have to get me a proper studio to voice act in cuz I could not voice act with others around me HEARING me talk #would be impossible for me I cannot take things seriously with others around me lmao

Plot: You try hide your pregnancy through Lando's large array of hoodies.

You sat in the bathroom crying your eyes out. You'd been feeling sick recently and didn't think the plane journey all the way to Las Vegas would be a good idea.

So you stayed behind while Lando went racing, you were now looking at the positive test in your hand.

You knew exactly when it was, it was. It was after his first race win in Brazil... you guys weren't as careful as you should have been.

"Fuck" you cried leaning your head against the wall of the bathroom, tears streaming down your face. It wasn't that you didn't want kids, or that you didn't want them with Lando it's just that you both agreed now wasn't the best time where he was in the height of his career.

You didn't know what to do, the only person you could think to call was Oscar's girlfriend Lily who you'd become best friends with ever since you met her at her first race appearance.

You waited while the phone rung, and rung until the line opened.

"Lily?" you sob into the phone but it's silent.

"Lily please, i need you!" you cry a little more.

"Y/N?" a male voice you knew too well answered. It was Oscar.

"Oscar?" you ask.

"Yeah, it's me Lily's just in the bathroom i didn't want it to go to a missed call!" he says before you here Lily ask who it is.

"Please Oscar, just hand me over to her" you say, Oscar could tell you were crying and he wanted to know what was wrong more than anything. He handed over the phone to his girlfriend with a worried look who answers right away.

"Y/N?" she asks with concern in your voice.

"Can you be alone right now, like without Oscar?" you say with labored breaths.

"Yeah, he's just leaving to get ready for FP3, weren't you babe!" she smiles giving him a look that tells him to leave.

Oscar, stops outside the door with a small panic.

What does he tell Lando?

Does he tell Lando?

He really had no idea what to say. Did he tell Lando that his girlfriend just got a call from Lando's girlfriend and he answered and she wa sobbing.

Would this make Lando spiral and have a bad race.

"Y/N please tell me what's happened!" Lily says back in Oscar's driver room.

"I'm pregnant" you sob and Lily's eyes widen.

"Congrats?" Lily says awkwardly and you just sob harder.

"Okay okay I'm sorry! I don't know what to say. How can i help!" she asks.

"I don't know, I think i just needed to tell someone!" you sniffle.

You continue to talk to Lily until she needs to leave to go watch Oscar and you agree you should probably watch Lando.

You walk past your shared room with Lando in your Monaco flat seeing one of his hoodies laying over the chair. You grab it and pull it over.

You spend the rest of the weekends watching shitty romcom's until you get a text from Lando.

Lando: I'm coming home, now

And that sent you into a full on spiral. Did Oscar or Lily talk and tell him, was hen angry at you...

Until he got home you were a nervous wreck having a ball of anxiety in your stomach.

"Baby?" Lando calls as he goes through the front door looking around for you. You were sat on the sofa, curled up in his lavender hoodie from his Quadrant range.

He walks in seeing you sat there, tears in your eyes as your trying not to look at him.

"Baby, look at me tell me why Oscar told me you called Lily in floods of tears... what's happened!" he asks, kneeling down in front of you trying to catch your gaze but you refused to look.

"Baby come on" he sighs. You take his hand, before standing up and walking him to the bathroom and showing him the test.

"Is this what I think it is?" he asks looking between the stick and you. You just nod, no words coming to your mouth.

"Baby, this is amazing! I know timing isn't great but i'll be here for you and them! I promise!" he says pulling you into a tight hug. He spent the whole evening talking to you about everything.

"You aren't leaving me?" you asked with a small sniffle.

"Baby, of course not... is that why you called Lily crying?" he asks with a frown and you nod.

"I was just worried, I know Mclaren have a really good car this year and that you and Oscar are a good team and we are still really young!" you admit and he nods.

"We are, but it's not anything we can't handle together..." he says pulling you in for a kiss, holding your hips before they snake up your body to get to the back of your neck.

"I love you so so much" he sighs leaning his forehead against yours, his eyes open watching you eyes.

"I love you too!" you sigh, all that built up anxiety just leaving and releasing from you.

"I don't think we should tell anyone but family" you say looking down and he frowns, not sure what you mean.

"Your going to stop coming to my races?" he asked, obviously he knew towards the end of your pregnancy you wouldn't be able to do the flight but right now you'd be safe and healthy to fly.

"No of course not! As long as we are on a jet I should be fine, why wouldn't eye?" you ask tilting your head in confusion.

"Well, baby ..." he gulps and you nearly start to laugh wondering where he's going with this.

"In a pregnancy you are growing a whole other human inside of you, so you'll ... you know get bigger?" he says as if its more of a question to you than anything.

"Yes, I'll have a bump" you giggle, placing his hand on your currently flat stomach.

"But you don't want to tell anyone? People will start to find out when they see it honey!" he laughs, rubbing your hips and stomach.

“I’ll just cover up with your hoodies” you say showing Jake how you look now.

“Mmmm my hoodies can only go so far” he laughs.

And that was the truth, you struggled in the heat in the hotter countries and ended up getting too big for even Lando’s hoodies.

Someone on twitter had got a picture of you, at an angle where Landos hand gripping your made the loose hoodie grab around your growing stomach and people started to go wild.
