More art from my Year of Lyrics project! Another one from pretty early on so not as much color but some other weirdness going on! Fun fact: when I first discovered this song I listened to it nonstop for over a week including when I was going to sleep (and took until this year to accept I was neurodivergent)

i saw someone was sending you asks about songs that remind them of lmk! mine are submarine symphonika by the submarines & the sun shines at night by the same band! i think the overall themes of the songs work for the show, but some of the song lyrics dont fit super well! and like a star by mike krol! a lot of mike krols songs are good with lmk just because its astro rock and it fits well with a lot of the sun/moon motifs in lmk! anyway sorry for rambling lol
I think "Submarine Symphonika" is a very SWK song, being someone who basically lost everyone he cared about and then became a mentor to MK:
Say what you will Love a heart that's been broken Love finds you even when, You've given up Say what you will Say it again and again Until the whole world knows about it Love finds you even when, You've given up
It's also just a banger.
Then "The Sun Shines at Night" (also a banger):
We hold on tight We had the summer of our lives But your doubts, they hold strong And my hope it burns too long So don't go
If you completely ignore the romantic implications, I really like it for Mei and MK, especially with their leaving motif!
Speaking of leaving...
I'm like a star I'm burning out fast I try to shine But it's never gonna last Can't you see you're just letting me down? With all my friends, I'll make a picture But in the morning I'll be gone
"Like a Star" I think is very MK, for no particular reason. Real quick, if you could just take a sec and walk with me over to this gif:

Pulling You Under
An Obiyuki Week 2022 Day 2 Playlist (for @snowwhite-andtheknight)
Tumblr media
Dug through some old ocean/deep sea themed playlists and found songs that perfectly fit the selkie and home themes! Didn’t initially think about the story when arranging the songs, but the bittersweet songs could represent Obi being concerned about selkie Shirayuki wanting to return to her previous life in the ocean where he can’t follow...
As you guys know, I always put my favorite songs in the playlists so I can listen to them non-stop and this playlist would be a good introduction to all of my favorites!
Submarine Symphonika- The Submarines Tides Change- The Hush Sound Waves that Rolled You Under- Young Summer Down By the Water- The Decemberists Marvelous Things- Eisley Is It Safe- Matt Pond PA Waltz on Water- Copeland Palm Reading- Fialta Under the Tide- CHVRCHES Deep Sea- Snail Mail
Summary lyrics are posted after the bonus mermaid Shirayuki!
Tumblr media
Submarine Symphonika- The Submarines
Say what you will Love finds you even when you've given it up
But now that you've promised never again It's exactly when you'll fall in
You say home's where you'll be But soon your own sweet love Who needs you will be lying in your arms
Tides Change- The Hush Sound
The tides changed, it's time to go home The waves said I should go The wind began to blow and the water got tall And that's when I went home
Going back to the boat With fresh oars, I will row Going back to unknown This SOS will never reach the coast
Waves that Rolled You Under- Young Summer
It was all a thrill I got locked in but I had to go The balcony was closed, but our minds were open
Go on and touch, don't think too deep in Don't be so scared of the things you love
Diving into waves over deeper waters Fools from far away close enough to fall in Well I never could say what I wanted I never could see the waves that rolled you under
It hits me still when you're distant Out there alone While the world is stretched we go But this time holding strong
Down By the Water- The Decemberists
See this ancient riverbed See where all the follies led Down by the water and Down by the old main drag
The season rubs me wrong The summer swells anon So knock me down, tear me up But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Marvelous Things- Eisley
Dark night, hold tight And sleep tight my baby Morning light shall burst bright And keep us here safely
I followed a rabbit Through rows of mermaid-entwined shrubbery
Oh, lying in the sun Everyday feeling all of the magic in life and the wonder
Is It Safe- Matt Pond PA
Let's go for a swim Out into the waves When the lifeguards leave It's ours for the day
Let's feel like we're brave Let's give it some meaning Even if it is shallow Even if it is fake
It is safe as long as I see you way out in the water With no thought of going under We could be out here for hours
Lying in the sand I fall asleep And dream of the summer When we'd slip behind the pool And go with nature
If you're looking for something Out in the waves At least it is something You know that you're safe
It is sound as long as I see you way out in the water With no thought of going under We could be out here for hours
I see birds above the waves sit on the air And wait for something I know someday I'll be done with all this waiting
Waltz on Water- Copeland
Step lightly, we might sink in
We're waltzing on the water now I'm drowning here on solid ground We're fumbling on our common ground
I'll step lightly lest I grow tired Of the search for the cure For apathy, was it her? But by the time she returned I was fast asleep, come lay with me 'Cause I can't slow my dreaming
Palm Reading- Fialta
Wading out into the ocean As you read the palm in my hand Lazy holiday in motion Sifting all the salt from the sand
Many hours you sing for me, you know what I like
Will you have the time, will you wait for me?
Under the Tide- CHVRCHES
I'm watching you run Run from the sidelines Take in a breath, fill in your lungs Keeping you alive No fear, I'll be your eyes I'll be your lifeline And if I can be, I'll be your strength And it won't be long now
Head up, head up Keep holding, holding
Don't you take another step away from here "I would go anywhere with you" What a lie I'll break down, but you will never see Tell me, are you happy? Are you really happy?
Deep Sea- Snail Mail
Deep sea dive Got down, but you stayed alive It's only you down there You and the bends
Lose your mind Lose track of breathing in time It's only you down there Sleep with the tides
We can be anyone It took so long to know someone like you And age in the dying sun Wake only to bathe in greens and blues

Music recs? Music recs.
These are a sampling of albums I’ve come across in recent years that I’ve spent far too much time listening to. To limit myself, I’m not including soundtracks or other things that are part of pop culture. This is strictly for music from artists I’d never heard of before stumbling across these albums and deciding to keep them because of the music's own merits.
In order of most recently discovered to longest kept:
El Club del BGI 3 by Marcel Casellas i La Principal de la Nit
Catalan dance club music that is very catchy and also makes me feel like I’m actually in a club listening to this being performed live (side note: I have never been inside a club so do not take this assessment as gospel).
Honeysuckle Weeks by The Submarines
I don't usually gravitate to love songs, but this American indie rock duo are so earnest about their love and they express it in a musically interesting way I really vibe with.
Mambo! by Yma Sumac
Yma Sumac had incredible range and was an absolute force to be reckoned with and I wish I'd heard of this Peruvian icon sooner.
Tiger Run by Sally Nyolo
This Cameroonian-born singer incorporates a bunch of international influences into an album that I don't know how to properly categorize, but I just have so much fun listening to her.
TSLC by The Silver Lake Chorus
Californian choir that mostly sings about life being kinda a mess while sounding amazing. (the final song on this album can be pretty depressing, though, so keep that in mind if you listen to the other songs on this album)
Musiche per Spiritus-Aqua-Vita by Progetto Arcana
The least Easter-sounding Easter music you’ve ever heard.
Sugungga by Leenalchi
This South Korean alternative rock group keeps throwing down banger after banger.
Kawaipunahele by Keali’i Reichel
Hawaiian music (with some covers of pop songs) that feels like getting a warm hug from someone who loves you.
Mayumi Kato Piano Works by Paul Barton
Japanese composer Mayumi Kato wrote these evocative and lovely pieces for the piano, which are performed by her friend Paul Barton. I think these CDs might be out of stock at the moment, but the music is all on YouTube (and they usually have the sheet music downloadable for free for all you pianists out there).
youtube
Ascendit Deus by Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, the Dmitri Ensemble, Graham Ross
Choir and organ performing religious-ish music that is truly epic and will probably intimidate all the peasants.

"Private submarine carrying several billionaire tourists goes missing while surveying the wreckage of the Titanic."
Well, it had to happen eventually. This is where big-ticket extreme tourism and shooting untrained assholes into space and such was always going to lead – frankly, it's surprising that it took this long for a major incident to crop up.
"One of the missing passengers is the president and CEO of the company that owns and operates the submarine."
Huh. Well, points for putting his money where his mouth is, I guess. I wonder if–
"The missing CEO's name is Stockton Rush."
Oh, bullshit. That's not a real person – that's the name of a guy who builds an inexplicably 1950s-themed underwater theme park and then gets eaten by a shark in a cautionary tale about the perils of libertarianism. That's the name of a guy who carries off an oceanfront real estate scam that somehow ends with Superman fighting a telepathic squid. Fucking "Stockton Rush". Unbelievable.

this whole oceangate submarine fiasco has actually led to a lot of interesting talks and debates about the grey area of human empathy vs the inclination to recoil at the bizarre behaviors of the ultra wealthy and how people struggle with both ideas and is actually very interesting to watch play out in different types of people
