Well, it had to happen eventually. This is where big-ticket extreme tourism and shooting untrained assholes into space and such was always going to lead – frankly, it's surprising that it took this long for a major incident to crop up.

"One of the missing passengers is the president and CEO of the company that owns and operates the submarine."

Huh. Well, points for putting his money where his mouth is, I guess. I wonder if–

"The missing CEO's name is Stockton Rush."

Oh, bullshit. That's not a real person – that's the name of a guy who builds an inexplicably 1950s-themed underwater theme park and then gets eaten by a shark in a cautionary tale about the perils of libertarianism. That's the name of a guy who carries off an oceanfront real estate scam that somehow ends with Superman fighting a telepathic squid. Fucking "Stockton Rush". Unbelievable.

Ah. With all the clues like past complaints about hull thickness and buckling, and the sub never auto resurfacing as designed, I'd been silently leaning towards the scenario it imploded back when the mother ship lost contact. So, with the debris field they found today...

It's better than slowly dying in a freezing sardine tin, but it's still a death I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

In a 2017 press release for OceanGate's first crewed submersible expedition to the wreck of the Titanic, Rush described what he saw as the appeal of such a trip: "Fewer than 200 people have ever visited the wreck, far fewer than have flown to space or climbed Mount Everest," he said. How to set yourself apart from the other ultrawealthy, merely by spending some more money.

i want to visit my friend (and some family too) that lives in barcelona and i dont think northern europeans can understand how little i want to go during tourist season. other times i had a place to stay but this time i would have to look at places i could stay and move through the city and jesus christ yall cannot understand the pain that it is

#the last times ive been in bcn (and that ive been able to go by myself etc) have been these last 4 yrs #and yall.... its literally hell. like specifically coming from a big city with decent public transport and decently walkable too #going to bcn is horrible bc its infested by tourists. one time i had to go run errands and buy stuff. and i couldnt even do that without #running into tourists on the bus (again. it was NOT a line that went anywhere famous)#and hanging out w ppl.... everything is extremely overpriced and going out to eat costs you an arm and a leg #and everytime i go i feel SO SORRY for the locals that have to live like this 24/7. thank god that my family used to live #in a barely-touristic place and there were still many local shops bc if i had experienced bcn's mass tourism when i was younger #i would hate tourists even more now #xarraire

#m/cc #just found out Demi Lovato went back to using she/her and people are saying she was lying #like. a) nonbinary people can use she/they or just she/her #b) people can have fluid identities or pronouns or experiment with their identities #c) if she's in the spotlight we have no idea what all reactions or pressure she might've gotten to go back to she/her #(including being denied work or just being misgendered all the time anyway)#and d: CIS PEOPLE CAN STILL USE THEY/THEM #like I GET it the concept of 'queer tourism' sucks (though for the record SHE STILL IDENTIFIES AS NONBINARY!!)#but also like even if she was cis the whole time SHE STILL WOULD BE 'ALLOWED' TO USE THEY/THEM #I had a cis woman prof who used they/them to avoid misogynistic biases in academia!#I've known cis male drag queens who used they/them to avoid the question of pronouns when switching in and out of drag!#I've had friends who identify as fully cis but 'my gender/sex/identity is none of your business screw off' they/them #not even mentioning the litany of people who are binary because they don't feel extremely Not Binary (the 'eh sure' cis folks)#the gender nonconforming people for whom not conforming extends to not using those pronouns #the people who use they/them as a personal or political statement #the folks who are questioning and are 'tentatively/theoretically cis'#yelling that cis people aren't 'allowed to' use neutral pronouns is the opposite of 'abolishing gender'#like congrats you're making this space less safe for cis AND nonbinary people! you've helped neither group #anyway. cis people are allowed to try out pronouns and change their mind and use multiple pronouns and do any kind of combo they want #I understand why it's frustrating to see a celebrity 'try out' they/them and go back to she/her when she got tired of it #but that's not a reason to put up this weird gate that makes EVERYONE less safe as a result #it's 3 AM and I'm tired
