.50 Caliber 3D Platformer Post #7

Environment AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART:

Finally, I've gotten around to making the environment art for the one level that I've got rn. I've been playing the system shock remake, and I really love how that game creates the illusion of grungy detail that reveals itself to be very low-resolution textures up-close. I knew I wanted the game to look like of grungy for a while now, but I didn't know exactly how I would go about achieving it. I toyed with the idea of layering photocopy textures over everything, but I eventually settled on using low resolution textures that are dithered with web colors. I'm quite happy with how it ended up looking. I think it has a source engineish vibe that reveals itself to be more colorful and strange up-close.

The Textures:

The process for making these is a lot simpler and less time consuming that how I usually make textures. This is mostly because I'm relying a lot more on the baked lighting to make things look good in this particular game, so the textures can get away with being less detailed. I'm mostly just grabbing stuff off of websites like textures.com and adjusting the contrast / coloration before shrinking them down and lowering the color depth. Here are some examples of how they look wowee wow:

Lightinggg:

For this game I'm using baked lighting as opposed to vertex based or realtime. I really like how it looks, and it ends up saving me a lot of time. If you don't know how baked lighting works, basically I place lights around a scene in unity, and then I use anything but unity's built in lightbaker that is bad and sucks (I use bakery) to essentially turn the lighting into a texture map that is placed on the mesh. It turns lights into textures basically. It is a lot more performant than real-time lighting, and it usually looks a lot better as well. With this game's particular art style, everything really ends up coming together with the lighting, and it would look pretty trash without it.

Cameo Skinz:

I've always really liked putting cameos in my stuff from artists that I'm friends with and/or take a lot of inspiration from. In this game, I plan to include a lot of unlockable skins for the player character that are characters from games / animations / whatever that I like. So far I've made a couple to breakup my time working on environment art. Check um out:

This one is Peter Shorts from an upcoming game called You Are Peter Shorts. I loved this dude at first sight and it was the first skin I ended up making. He was really fun to make because he has no body or hands, so I ended up making his head/torso one big thing that is attached to the head bone. You are Peter Shorts is made by the talented ondydev who I don't think I've actually asked permission to include this skin yet. If it doesn't end up in the final game pretend I didn't post about it lol. You should check out their previous game Tres-Bashers if you haven't.

This one is Appy from Brawlers World! Brawlers World is one of those creative projects that is so great that it gives me envy. I'm honestly so excited to be able to have this little dude in my game, and I think he ended up fitting into the art style super well. Those are the only two skins I've made so far. I have a lot more planned including Nova from Anodyne 2, Frog from Jamphibian, Knight of Trye from Knight's Try, Orbo from Peeb Adventures & Orbo's Odyssey, and some characters from my own stuff. They aren't a high priority right now because I have to actually make the game first, but I'll probably make a few here and there to curb burnout, and I'll show them off whenever I do. I am v passionate about the cool shit my peers are making, and I hope other people are too.

Conclusion:

idk it's like 8 am and I haven't slept. I've just been workin a lot while listening to the magnus archives. I guess I can turn this conclusion into me talking about the magnus archives. I'm on episode 197 while writing this so im almost done. It is p cool and I like how much it changes tonally overtime. It really feels like a big long journey, and I like media that can do that kinda thing. It is now a series that I will forever associate with the development of this game considering I listened to it all while working on it. It's kinda funny how that happens. Sometimes I'll be in a location in one of my games and it'll make me think about some video essay or w/e that I was watching while making it. Anyway, have a good day every1 pls tyty

auughhh and her lore if you wanna read below but I understand that OC lore isn’t everyone’s thing

OKAY SO she comes from a universe where her kind are robots made by a company to terraform planets for the ultra wealthy. So if you have the funds you can purchase a whole planet and whole armies of these little bots will shape it however you want.

BUT. While on the assembly line, before even recovering her directive, a portal opens up and throws her into this odd pocket dimension, which is just a half built city floating in a bright void. (Also when I say half finished I mean more like brutalist aesthetic with just concrete and no glass on the windows)

This place (named ‘Gearsky’ by locals because massive floating gears are the only thing that exist here outside of the city itself) is full of people from their own dimensions just trying to get by. She explores, and comes across a little bear being picked on in an alleyway. (The lil green bear [party bear] in the pics above)

She saves him and then it subconsciously becomes her prime directive to help Party Bear get home/care for him. So they set up base in one of the empty apartments and she just sorta takes care of him.

NOW. How do you get home you may be asking? Well it’s easy. You just need to beat someone in a deathmatch.

Enter the only form of entertainment on this island. The man who is the dictator of this place and subsequently the host of this game, aptly named Host, loves running this game. The rules are simple. 3 people enter, and two can leave alive. Only one needs to die, and the other two can get sent home. The only thing is, you have no idea who you’re going up against.

Now, RB, being a bot made to terraform, has some power behind her with her explosive abilities. But Party Bear has no defenses. So RB tries to strike a deal with Host.

She offers to kill both people in the ring with her for multiversal travel.

Host is intrigued by this offer, and accepts. After wiping the floor with her opponents, she’s granted access to all dimensions. She’s obviously excited and goes home to try and let Party Bear go home, but is heartbroken when she discovers that she’s the only one who can travel using the portals.

But this catches the attention of someone else.

Her future boss.

Another robot, by the codename TB-89.

He took note of her deal, and approached her with a job offer.

Man’s long story short she works for him as an assassin!

These are my personal favorite resources that I use in order to self-study Korean!

YouTube Channels

빅키샘Miss Vicky

Miss Vicky has helped me tremendously with learning Korean. I use her videos mainly as a review but if I don’t understand something that I get from my main learning source (I’ll get to that in a bit!), I run over to her channel, find a video regarding that topic, and she clears everything right up. Her content is so thorough and I love the way she explains things (especially grammar). She’s also a native Korean speaker, so it’s comforting to know that she’s a reliable source. (maybe Im just a bit too suspicious…)

Hailey _Your Korean Friend

Hailey is the #1 YouTuber I recommend to beginners who are struggling with 한글 (Korean writing system/“alphabet”). Her explanations are amazing and I never got bored watching her videos. I don’t use her videos as often anymore unless I want to find some quick vocab words that I want to study because her content seems to be more geared towards beginner beginners. Her 한글 lessons are fast and easy and she makes it so you’re not getting overwhelmed with information at the start. She helped me a lot with pronunciation and with 받침! (last consonant in the Korean syllable… 받침 is still lowkey my greatest enemy)

Minji Teaches Korean 민지 티치 코리안

I’ve only personally used one of her videos but she gives a lot of examples and she explains very well. Minji seems to reach out to different levels of Korean, but I mainly see beginner lessons. She also hasn’t posted in 5 months… but she’s still a great creator that I recommend checking out!

Websites

TTMIK

TTMIK is my main learning source. I feel like everyone knows about this website, but it’s genuinely such a good resource for Korean. The only downside is that it focuses on grammar and rarely gives new vocabulary so, you kind of have to go out of your way to find vocab to study, but I don’t quite mind because it means I can decide what topics I want to learn. (they do have a YouTube channel in which they post like “500 must know Korean vocab” videos) TTMIK also has pretty affordable textbooks and workbooks. I personally don’t use them because I feel like I can learn Korean fine without spending money on a textbook but if you’re one of those people who like having a physical workbook/textbook, I’ve heard excellent things about their books!

HowtostudyKorean

This website is another well known one. I don’t usually use this website because I don’t like how disorganized it is, and I don’t personally understand the explanations. They also don’t teach 존댓말 (formal language) right off the bat and I personally believe that it’s beneficial to learn 존댓말 as a beginner due to how important it is in Korean culture. However, that’s just personal beliefs and preferences. They supply a really good amount of vocab to learn in each lesson and I really appreciate that.

I think that both TTMIK and HTSK are excellent websites and it’s truly up to personal preference as to which one you use!

Apps

Quizlet

Quizlet is one of the best vocab studying apps that I’ve tried. A while ago they added a subscription which is really annoying so the only thing you can really do it’s like flash card things and matching games?? It definitely downgraded the app but I can understand 😅

Drops

Drops is a very fun app for me. It helps with vocab studying so much. You can only use it for like 5 minutes a day unless you pay for a subscription, but even those 5 minutes a day are super useful. They have different topics such as Food, Numbers, Colors, K-pop, Daily routine, etc… It has other languages, too, so if you aren’t learning Korean or are learning other languages, you can choose to use Drops in your other target language! (They currently have over 40 languages if I remember correctly)

Naver Papago - AI Translator

I know there’s a lot of stigma around translators, but Papago is a dictionary based translator. I don’t know if that’s that correct term or what not, but basically, if you type in a sentence and translate it into Korean, it not only gives you the translation but also breaks down the words used in the sentence and gives further sample sentences with those words. I find this very fun and useful, and so far, Papago has been very accurate. (Just please don’t rely on Papago or any other translator if you’re genuinely learning a language, trust me 🙏)

DeepL Translate

Unlike Papago, DeepL translates sentences like how you would say them in an actual conversation. Additionally, it adds different ways to say everything you translate. The only downside is that the app doesn’t really explain anything you see in the sentence. As I said, Papago breaks down the sentences and gives you different examples as to how to use the words, and you can see different conjugations… etc. It really depends on personal preference as to which one you wanna use, they’re both great apps.

Langblr Blogs

I personally love this blog especially to review after I’ve gone over things in TTMIK and even after I watch Miss Vicky. The explanations are incredibly easy for me to understand and the examples given are really clear for me.

dreamer hangugeo

I actually just recently found this blog but I really enjoy the explanations they give, too. I’m literally always scrolling through A Pop of Korean and Dreamer Hangugeo when I need a quick refresher or if I need clearance on something. It’s definitely worth checking these blogs out if you haven’t already.

Here's the whole avatar design of my OC btw. Since I might one day be making a v-tuber model with similar features (albeit with redesigned clothes, and a few tweaks here and there).

A bit of history, yes, this was originally my Gaiaonline avatar. Since that's where I'd spend the majority of my teenage years. Especially as strict parental control around internet usage when I was growing up made traditional online messaging and hangouts with irl friends near impossible. And I was able to bypass a lot of parental monitoring with the site's (now-defunct) in-game chat features. Because just like other MMOs, when you log out, your chat log gets deleted.

To give Gaia some context, it was basically Fortnite for millennials back in the early 2000's. Complete with an entire free MMORPG (like a really basic FF14 in terms of combat), flash minigames, marketplaces for character customization, personal blog features (prior to Tumblr), hangout forums for all kinds of hobbies and discussions (prior to Reddit), and even a virtual town that would hold seasonal events (trick or treats, Easter egg hunts, etc.). Everyone also had their own in-game house with an actual virtual zip code that you could personalize and invite people over to.

It was simple compared to game hangout spaces we have today, in part because it was free, but at the time it felt like one of the only forms of personal freedom that was available to my teenage self. Especially when you were like me, and had parents monitoring every breath you took. In a household as strict as mine, where individuality and personal expression was a sin, it gave me an escape to be somewhere else. During a time where I was essentially locked to either my bedroom, school, or forced extracurriculars.

Because people with my kind of home life in that era, essentially had to be teenagers in secret. Having things like dates online, because relationships weren't allowed (usually on both sides), even if there was nothing odd about us. And every message you sent via either IM or SMS using traditional means could be read by parents or school staff. So the only way to hang out and just talk to people, including classmates, even if it was about the most mundane sfw things, was in a game space like this. It's actually really abusive and dystopian in hindsight, but it's a big part of how I even kept enough sanity to make it to adulthood. It was a loophole that give me the strength to hold out long enough to graduate and turn 18. To let me be something other than just...trapped and alone.

(Yes, Dot Hack as an anime franchise was extremely relatable during this time, especially the "offline" life portions. The kids in that series weren't just MMO addicts like most casual anime viewers think. If you read the books, they were literally micro-chipped and video monitored 24/7 by parents and the government until adulthood, so online spaces like "The World" were literally the only escapes they had).

Alas, now that Flash is discontinued, most of Gaia is defunct as well. The website remains, but most of the features I used to log in daily for either no longer exist or are obsolete. And the few that do are now rather different. So it unsurprisingly has a fraction of the user base it once started held. And since the email I used in the past to create my avatar is also long gone, alas so is my account and all the years I spent there.

However, I did still keep a couple of avatar screenshots as keepsakes. Since I originally used them for my old YouTube channel over 10 years ago. In part because I have zero methods of creating digital art (though I'd love to someday), and second because my avatar was actually kind of special? Not only it was incredibly rare due to the game having limited-time items with unlock conditions, but my OC also came to represent a lot of things about me personally. When you live your entire childhood as a fictional avatar, it's hard not to become attached, I suppose.

Case-in-point, immediately noticeable, but my character isn't exactly human. Unlike Final Fantasy 14, people only have access to starting out as humans in Gaia. But through either events or rare items, you can change yourself to something else. Vampires, Elves, Zombies, Fae, Centaurs, and a host of other things. The Padmavati Naga, which is what I am, was a rare form that was only released for a month. And even then, most people didn't take the anthropomorphic style with it that I did - opting instead for either half-snake or full garuda forms. (Eventually the item would get re-released years later as the website declined, but almost nobody played anymore).

Second major point is the "tattoos", which were also a rare weapon. Or rather, weapons. Notice how in some shots portions of the tattoo vanishes? That's because it morphs into the weapons themselves. I was disappointed to see that I only saved two screenshots of the item being activated, but in addition to the bow and lance pictured above, I distinctly also remember there being daggers, a sword, and a scythe. The weapon also allowed you to eventually take on a cloaked grim reaper form, or even fully transform into a Soulsborne-esque demon (eldritch gore included).

All of this is a major factor behind my au-ra design in Final Fantasy 14. I was surprised at how many parallels I could make right out of the gate. And while omni-classing is something I'm doing for LP purposes, it also draws similarities from my old Gaia avatar as well.

It's sad that I can't really get my account back, but I also know I wouldn't really use the website in the form it's in today. Especially not with full, unrestricted access to regular internet features. Nonetheless, it was a major part of my teenage years, and a much-needed sanctuary of sorts.

I still keep that OC close to my heart, and to this day enjoy bringing them to life in new spaces.

Palia controversies…

Oh boy….these past couple weeks have been a lot for Palia.

I’ve been following the Palia subreddit for a bit now and it was mostly empty until the closed beta released. Now EVERYONE has their opinion about the game and they are literally all over the place. Some hate it, some love it, some like it but have concerns. Some see it’s incredible potential but ultimately won’t play it.

Here’s MY two cents, and my opinion is still evolving on the whole thing.

Right now from what information I have, this is pretty much the game that the devs wanted to (or had to) make.

If it’s true that not much has changed since the first alpha 1-2 years ago, then either they ran out of money to implement more feedback, or they are about satisfied with the game and is just ignoring more feedback that they don’t want to implement.

Now, I think we need to keep giving feedback and don’t stop, because at least if we don’t hear anything back then that’s on the devs and not us.

For me personally, I like the game so far. It doesn’t seem like an MMO, but the last MMO I played would I guess be club penguin lol but that might not even qualify. But in any case, it’s not bad! I’m only a few real hours into the game so maybe that will change. There’s also the fact that I LIKE playing slowly, that I don’t like to grind hardcore for anything and everything in the game. I like playing at my own pace for 1-2 hours a couple times a week.

This isn’t an official review of Palia, but I’m just addressing the controversy surrounding it. There’s also the thing where the devs were lying about their prices for their cosmetic items, and how they silence everybody that disagrees with them.

I will say the devs way of communicating is not my favorite. I’m sure they’re amazing people. But they either reply to really dumb troll comments or they don’t reply at all, and it doesn’t seem to be consistent. Just make official statements on your website, make time to answer some questions on social media occasionally and leave it at that!

Im not going to spend any money until I know the devs can implement feedback and that the game WILL improve over time. I did say I like the game now but I can tell it might get old a little quickly. So I will keep at it for the next couple months and see what happens!

Edit: apparently they just released an update. I will say that they also need to give some free stuff away along with the cash shop updates.

Look at Disney Dreamlight Valley. Their devs actually listened to their fan base and made it easier to get free in-game currency so we don’t have to use real money as often. The Palia devs actually made it harder…

You can like a game and want it to be better. You can continue to play a problematic game. It’s my life, my opinions, my choices. Everyone’s different. People are allowed to be obsessed with the game just as they’re allowed to hate the game, and everything in between. And they’re allowed to voice those opinions on the internet. All these posts I’m seeing of people complaining or people trying to defend the game, shouldn’t be meant to sway people in a particular direction. I feel like most people made up their mind. The devs should be the ones dealing with it.

It sucks that I wanted to be part of a new gaming community but everyone is arguing, but there’s nothing I can do. I just suck it up and deal with it. I’ll wait it out until either something happens or I simply stop playing.

In the end, it’s a game. My life’s going to move forward to matter what I do with the game, and I have way more important things going on lol. See you for the official review.

hmm im not too sure actually. i want to say most recently it was six years passed because i had an entirely different ending planned but every time i wrote it it just felt so unnatural. but outside that i am not really sure, heh.

7: tell us about the plot of the first fanfic you ever wrote

okay so it was a one direction fanfiction when i was in fifth to sixth grade. so mind you this was like...2011-2012.. but anyway the band bursts into MC's house, and naturally MC hated 1d but her bffs loveeed them. and the whole fic was just them staying at the MC's house and cancelling plans to stay there longer and MC learning to love with them and falling in love with one of the members.

14: what's your worst writing habit?

not writing a draft and not proof reading. i have had very few fics where i outline what i actually want to happen, usually i just write and hope for the best. the only times my stuff is proof read is if i have someone beta it, which is not often lol <3

36: do you base your characters of real people or not? if so, tell us about one.

mc is always based on myself /j. not really, aside from one time i had a specific friend in mind for a side character's s/o, but they were mentioned like 2 times in the whole fic so there is not really much to explain.

47: what story are you most proud of?

on here i think i am most proud of six years passed, just because it's my first fic that is really long and that i feel like is genuinely good. i want to expand on this universe soo much i think about osamu and that reader all the time. BUT if we mean other websites i think that it's a supernatural fanfic i posted on wattpad. i wrote it when i was like 15/16 and recently started rewriting the whole thing. it's like my baby, and she kinda popped off over there too.

the above were in my Off gshade setting. that is to say, my own setting. which is why it sucks and is so so crunchy. like. i really am envious of Pint (former WoW player, now a ffxiv lalafell streamer and machinima/animator/comedy guy/femboy kinda lol) and his gshade settings are so so pretty and cinematic and the DoF auto setting is good i really have to find the vod or something where he sets it up or answers a question abt it so i can copy. he’s only adjusted it a few times in his vods and i think the names of the settings were just like “Pint ____” so its custom i guess and everything uuugh will he release his settings publicly i need to knowwwwwwww ugh

bonus silly adventurer plates

played the piano for francel at the firmament and unlocked charlemend’s custom deliveries finally. loved this scene. on one hand i get that they’re just reusing npcs bc it probably costs money to make new ones or whatever the push of the randomization button is, on the other hand i love that they reuse npcs bc i can name ppl and ishgard feels lived in with your familiar neighbors :)

tbh pre-hw, i accidentally spoiled myself via the subreddit and twt, not on the plot stuff for hw, but the ishgardian restoration. and also a bit of dark knight. so. my impression was the gross communal salt rocks, the squishy beds of mysterious substance, the murder of the innocent orl tribe. so. my first impression, pre-hw, was...not great.....but now that it really seems like they’re trying to make it a better more inclusive place and moving more towards living with the dragons like letting ehll tol and her dragon friends live in the city, plus the machinist questline of the great equalizer power of gun uhhh i mean hilda and her hounds providing the brume and common folk safety in the streets instead of just the corrupt temple knights - ishgard just feels like home now. :) there’s also the crystarium on the first.

anyways, visited another world after seeing a shb hunt ad on the centurio hunts discord.

also, my crappy apartment in-game in the empyreum / the ishgardian housing apartments. im finally decorating it.

saw a concert in gridania aetheryte plaza and there was a portgas d ace cosplayer lol.

anyways i loved my co-healer cajun lettice here lol we all had brain fog. thankfully no full raid wipes, just...our team. lol

slightly outdated, but heres my suffering inventory and relic grind. im on the stupid atma books rn, so kinda disregard the atma shown here rn.

edit: realized i forgor to add the pics of the artemis atma oops. the colorful one is the gshade neneko x eorzea collection natural vanilla settings. the drab boring one is just the vanilla base game. literally. so. drab. even on my regular ps4 and whenever i borrow my sister’s ps5 to play, our tvs have built-in shader/color adjusting settings to make it look not. dirt. ugh. gshade really helps this game i swear idk how vanilla ppl do it anymore lol. its not even like cheating modding fluid aura type game mods like in world of warcraft, its literally just a built in instagram filter lol.

i am annoyed i have to pay double rent for a month and a half, and i am annoyed i spent a bunch of money in march for some shit that was Extremely specific to making this apartment nicer (like idk i’m gonna need an eight foot ladder in the new place, which was not built in the 1800s and has somewhat low ceilings and way fewer windows, also there isn’t really a good place to put my swiss dot and pom pom trim cafe curtains :(

i feel like brass implies that at least some minimum baseline of thought and effort has been put into an object. i like how mellow and warm it looks. i think it’s an easier finish to decorate around than steel or “oiled bronze” which is usually just treated steel but we don’t have time to get into that. i also like how it leans industrial without going full steampunk. also i hate trying to clean verdigris without ruining it.

When Jamie and Cove are kissing while my character only had dresses selected, I had both the option to remove the dress or to remove the shirt... Picking one of the options to interact with Cove, after he removed his shirt, it had Jamie remove their shirt followed by ther pants despite only having dresses picked.

I’m afraid things haven’t been changed or removed, so I think you might’ve accidentally picked the wrong things somewhere along the way and locked yourself out of being able to propose by mistake. Sometimes you meant to say you want to get married but instead you mis-click and have it so the MC isn’t thinking about marriage or something. All I can suggest is starting from the beginning of Step 3 and making sure to follow the steps listed in the FAQ. I’m sorry for that.

This is the same situation as the above. We didn’t remove things and you’re not wrong that there are sometimes those options. But there are various choices you have to make to get those options and it sounds like you accidentally missed something. If your relationship isn’t long-term, you can’t do it for example.

Honestly, I would like to thank Our Life for helping me come to terms with my sexuality. Before, I never would've actually thought that it was possible to like boys romantically and still be asexual. Hm, did you use the Cove creator? Maybe there’s a bug where using the creator to add bracelets doesn’t fulfill the requirement to give Cove a bracelet in Step 3.

Wait, I'm dense, when does Baxter appear in step 2? Is it from big park firework? I feel so bad since i really love Baxter and waiting to buy his dlc.

It’s in the Soiree Moment. You have to be just friends with Cove, indifferent, or crushing but not ask Cove to the dance at all. Then while there you can find someone new to dance with. But if you bring Cove to the dance while crushing, the MC won’t wanna dance with anyone else so you can’t get the scene.

In step 2 when we go to the soiree I made my mc go alone and baxter chooses the mc to dance, i'm curious, why did he pick the mc? sorry if this has been asked before!

Because the MC looked to be around his age, seemed to also be searching for a partner, and had nice legs. A perfect option for him.

I read some of the FAQs, and I saw that we could tell Baxter about the condo that he rented there was previously the mean old grandparents. how do we get the mc to tell him that?

It happens in the DLC Moment “Late Shift”. If you don’t have a job you instead get a longer scene with Baxter.

I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking how we programmed the screen or something script related? Adding Moments like that is pretty straightforward, though. You just have buttons that open to different labels and then the scripts are essentially individual short stories/vignettes. Good luck with your VN!

Since Autumn becomes gender fluid later in the game, will there be a character who remains as he/him to romance in game?

OL1 has the he/him LIs, OL2 is all about other genders.

I don't want to impose on your creative plans, but a parrot could possibly make a good pet in an OL-type game? They're pretty long-lived and likely to still be thriving by the end even if the MC got them back in step 1.

I do appreciate the suggestion, but I’m afraid it’s not likely going to happen. I understand there are technically some animals that could theoretically live long enough to last the whole game that or we could have the MC only get a pet after some years have already passed. But the many things that would have to be considered/accommodated for makes it just something we probably can’t manage adding. I’m sorry.

You can’t get Cove’s Step 3 confession scene if you have the family comfort you in the car. But that’s not the only way to date him. You can get together with him earlier in the game or later on in Step 4.

Is Mc always going to be the one walking down the aisle or could Cove do it? Also could you choose to have one of your moms walk you?

No. Cove wouldn’t want to walk down the aisle like that and the MC automatically respects that. And the MC also gets to have their preferences respected, so it’s up to you whether they want to do an aisle walk or not. You also can pick who, if anyone, walks with you.

Once step 4 is out, will you be able to go the whole game on crush/love without either of you confessing?

Yes, as long as you tell the game you don’t want to progress the relationship. Even in Step 4 it won’t force you to officially get together.

He’s only a friend unless you get his romance story.

Step 4 is just an epilogue in both games.

Nope. Cliff has a very small interest in sex. If he’s not in a real relationship with a partner he’s crazy about it simply isn’t something he feels a need for, so one night stands wouldn’t even cross his mind.

Maybe! There are side characters who could be given romance stories, but whether or not it will happen depends on funding and how long everything else takes to finish.

made a fun, interesting discovery while playing ng on stream today.

while going through killer peach on scary mode, some text showed up on screen for literally one frame(don’t worry about all the other shit on there it’s funny). it’s a little hard to read bc it’s a crusty picture, but it reads “八王子死”.

up until this point we’d only ever seen 2 versions of this scare. one was just “あ” over and over, and the other i only ever saw on the steam community tab that translated to “im not dead”. initially one of us thats trying to learn kanji atm(thank you @queenshroorn) read this one literally as “death of the eighth prince”, but that didn’t feel right to me bc the other two were at least a little plot-adjacent? the only reference i could think of to a prince is seiji being called the “prince of threats” and that was a big stretch.

so after we ended the stream for the night i started hunting. i plugged that text into every translator i could find online and then i was given this by a couple different websites.

i had no idea what hachioji was, and it was 3:30am so i was too lazy to look it up. maybe it was a fairy tale thing, and that would make sense because of yakumo miroku and the momotarou thing? i posted what i found in our discord server and got this response

it’s a city. and it starts with h. interesting

i remembered that ataka once mentioned in an interview that h city from death mark was based off of an actual city in tokyo that started with an h. so i dug out my death mark art book and turned to the page about the setting. and would you look at that

i know that death mark and ng are both connected, they have to be since they’re in the same series. d-man mentions yashiki several times, and he’s even in the game for a split second. but for something like that to be brought up in this game has to mean death mark/yashiki’s story and ng/akiras story are more intertwined than we thought. idk having a scare reference death mark just makes the games more intimately connected, maybe it’s just me.

i hope the supposed “death of h city” will be explained in shinigami once it comes out. i love playing gaming detective :)

head’s still full of Mother EarthBound Thoughts so im gonna spill some here. (warning this’ll be super messy and also contain big honkin’ spoilers for all three games)

for context i played and beat EarthBound after it came out on Wii U, then Mother 3 in 2015. i tried Mother 1/Beginnings at some point, but sadly my immunity to Old Game Jank doesn’t extend past the mid-90's. im a relatively young Mom Fan is what im trying to say here

i havent seen anyone here talk about the vid they put out for the Switch ports?? pls watch it its so cute and in-line with the games’ humor! lets all get to know Ness!!

im still watching Curiomatic’s Mother 3 vid daily and im still noticing new details and shit. and their website's so good too?? felt!Boney has my whole heart

my brain's been on fire imagining how the other two games would look in the same style. and like. it feels criminal to ask so soon after 1 and 2 got Switch ports, but a full 3-games-in-1 remake would be so good for the series for two big reasons:

1. it could fix 1/Beginnings' Jank and tighten its translation, bringing it in line with the other two, and

2. its the one situation i can think of that would force Nintendo to localize 3. like can you imagine if they remade the whole series and then left it in Japan?? people would have their heads!

not to mention a game with a modern 3D engine would be leagues easier to edit than the sprite-based original. cus while im scared of NoA over-censoring the game as much as the next guy, there are a few things in it that could’ve been done more sensitively, and that altering wouldn’t harm the plot if done right. i doubt i need to name specifics

also on the selfish side, i just wanna know what would change in terms of visual design. i wanna see all the enemies move in battle and Pippi with beady eyes like everyone else and how they’d officially differentiate Ninten’s design from Ness’s, and most of all i REALLY wanna see official art of Beginnings!Giygas. i wish to grasp his true form so bad it makes me look stupid

not that i dont like the fandom’s agreed-on designs!! far from it, i love them!! like Giygas having red-and-black eyes as foreshadowing is genius and whoever first came up with it deserves an award

i made a party playlist in case 3 ever got localized back when i was more hopeful about it. how far back, you may ask? i included this unironically. that far lmao

one of my fave things about the series is how, despite being made in Japan, it pays homage to so many distinctly Western pop-cultural concepts that it’s instantly nostalgic to the average English-speaker. the Spielbergian coming-of-age film, the dot-eyed yet contemplative comic strip, the kitschy B-movie monsters, the King-esque entities conveying the loss of innocence, the pairing of psychedelia with an insistence on peace over war. for a funny parody of America, it’s fascinating how right it feels at the emotional level.

speaking of psychedelia, i wanna plug this amazing prog rock cover album that deserves more love. like holy shit, youd think this is how some of these songs were always meant to be played. ive never had a drug trip cus im terrified of messing up set and setting, but to have my first while hearing this played live would probably feel beautiful

speaking of more psychedelia, last month i thought Polka Dot Tail by Ween sounded super familiar, and i just realized why: it sounds like Magicant (the second one). i might try to make a mashup later idk

ive been meaning to watch a vlog of Camp Fangamer’s EarthBound Bash 2015 for years and this week i finally did it! shit looked like so much fun, and i cant think of another game series that’d make for such an immersive event. i could only find one extended video of the Mother 3 bash they did a year later, but it seems like an equally transformative event, if not more despite Lucas being a mannequin

listen....i know people have done the math and ruled it out as a possibility....but i still really like the idea of Ninten and Ana being Ness’s parents. i just think its cute and neat and also opens up some opportunities for angst (something something the fear of your kids inheriting your personal battles)

bonus points for Lloyd being Dr. Andonuts cus i think itd be funny if he was the only character to appear in all three games

while im here confessing my fan sins, lemme add that i treat Smash Bros as canon cus it gave the world such gems as Ness’s eyes being purple and Boney having leg warmer fur

man i remember first seeing Porky in Subspace and thinking he was trapped in the spider-mech thing and i had to free him.... ah, the innocence of youth

removing Lucas from Sm4sh was a bitch move but the trailer when they put him back was honestly SO worth it. like him returning Ness’s favor from Subspace?? everyone noticing he smiled more and being so proud of him?? that was the best day of my life

speaking of bitch moves im still confused by how u get Claus, Hinawa and the Masked Man’s spirits in World of Light. like what the fuck did Nintendo mean by that shit. their placement and the fights themselves are such a specific gut-punch that its hilarious. killing two gods wont bring Claus back

but also its...nice to think that Lucas got a chance to see them again. like maybe one of the other fighters who knew his deal freed them and brought them to him, and everyone let them have a moment before they fought Galeem and Dharkon. imagine Claus being all “told ya we’d meet again someday :’) let’s go beat up that angel thing together!”

also cus Smash made me so used to it, i refer to all PSI moves as PK. even the ones that are PSI in both languages, like Magnet. PK Sue me

so like... im a twin. my sister and i love each other more than anything. we played 3 together, and quickly agreed that i was the Lucas to her Claus. what happens between them in the game is my absolute worst fear. ive had nightmares since childhood with the same basic theme -- losing her to a decision i can't sway her from -- so the final boss and the "hasty brother" line after gutted us. when youre literally linked from birth, it's hard to imagine life without, and even harder to prepare for the possibility. this game forced us to do so, and it hurt like hell, but it strengthened our bond in the process.

theres already a hundred essays about it but i love how 3′s ending manages to reflect every player’s wishes. everyone’s got their own idea of what Lucas wished for, so here’s mine:

the entire planet was purified and made habitable again

all the Chimeras were split into their original animals (but some of them chose to be friends still, so there’s at least one kangaroo and one shark that hang out often)

everyone that Porky abducted from other time periods were sent back with their memories intact (so Dr. Andonuts gets to be with Jeff again and is also less likely to be employed by another asshat)

im one of those people who thinks Lucas didn’t revive anyone who died, because it doesn’t feel right after the characters spent three years coping with it. (all the power to people who disagree tho, it’s all cool!) instead, i think he wished for a new place to honor everyone they lost, resulting in a beautiful new cemetery hidden in the sunflower field outside Tazmily. strangely, it contains lots of gravestones that no one recognizes; one with a haiku written on it, ten crosses lined up in two rows of five, even one the size of a bug; and at the very back, a swirling metal statue engraved in an alien language, lying between two stones marked “XX”.

and finally, i think Lucas wished to meet whatever force was looking after his world all this time, so he could thank them personally... and thats how you, the player, ended up in the game :)

im still utterly charmed by the image of the player, struck blind from being pulled into another world, being lead by the hand (and pokes in the back) to meet Lucas,,, like its okay sweetie you can say goodbye as many times as you need, im so goddamn proud of you!!! ill see you in Smash okay???
