Ranking every time the Ten Men get taken down by how cringe fail they are (Part 2)
Warning: this post contains major spoilers for Riddle of Ages!
We're back again already, folks. Part 1 is here; now it's time for round 2 of some good old pointing and laughing.
Book 4: The Riddle of Ages
Tumblr media
first appearance of my problematic faves the Katz brothers! There's always gotta be one cowardly goon in the lot, and the Scaredy Katz fulfill their role admirably. This knockout isn't too cringe-worthy, although the dramatic "Now!" [immediately gets knocked out] is quite comical, as well as the image of him trying to run on his knees. 3/10
Tumblr media
And here we have Garrotte being painfully average once again. Although this one is made more interesting by the fact that he and Sharpe apparently jumped some random businessmen on the street and stole their completely normal briefcases, then had the audacity to be surprised when said completely normal briefcases didn’t hold up well in a combat scenario. It’s almost as if they’re designed to hold paperwork, not fend off a flurry of tranquilizer darts. Who would’ve thunk. Also. You could literally walk into any Home Depot and find dozens of items more suited for this purpose, which the Ten Men easily could’ve done if they weren’t so darn committed to the stonks bit.
Also, “Most unfair! Such shoddy materials!” is the funniest possible thing you could say upon getting knocked out. It’s giving “trust fund kindergartener encounters Crayola crayons during art class for the first time ever.” Please just say “god damn it” like a normal person. 4/10
Tumblr media
See this one is so funny to me. You're telling me that the infamous shock watches, which have terrorized several of our beloved characters over the course of the series, can be defeated simply by doing simple gymnastics? it's giving "show Sticky doing long division in his head to defeat Curtain's infamous Happiness brainwashing." Also, you're telling me you can knock out people simply by throwing darts at them? wild. anyways. I love Katz getting knocked out mid-threatening leap. 5/10
Tumblr media
diversity win! Milligan won't kill you but he isn't above shooting you in the ass! 7/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry this is so long but we need the full context to appreciate how cringe this is. imagine you brought five (5) of your best men to locate SQ Pedalian, a young adult not particularly skilled in combat, and also to fight a teenage girl. And now it's gone so sideways that you're literally the last one left standing. Standing, on top of an ice cream truck that you pushed on top of your opponent, who is now trapped beneath and yet has his hands casually laced behind his head as if he's tanning on the beach. And you got tricked into standing there, pinned by an empty gun, and simply watching while he loads darts into the (previously empty) gun. And now he's just shooting a bunch of empty darts at you, one after another, while you have to stand there and wait for him to finally knock you out. I think I would disintegrate on the spot. Also "You wouldn't shoot me in the face. That's not your style" bestie you just watched him shoot Sharpe in the ass. Would you prefer that instead? 9/10
Tumblr media
This one might take the cake. First of all, they all fell for the trap, so now they're stuck in jail again like 3 days after escaping. And then, the teenage girl you've been terrorizing for years finally turns your stupid condescending pet names right back on you before a nine year old uses her mind powers to make you knock yourself out with your own weapon. 🫵 CRINGE. 10/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still very cringe, though less so than McCracken. It's kinda funny that Constance made them use their shockwatches instead of the (less painful) handkerchiefs. 6/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y'know, given the Katz brother's astounding loser energy, I'm amazed that they might actually have the least cringe take down. Taking the coward's way out. I respect it. Love them staring out the window. sad tigger gif here. Bonus points for ratting out Crawlings for being awful. 1/10 and two gold star stickers for them both
And, finally, for the grand finale, our favorite cringe boy is back:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crawlings is making up for having fewer appearances in this book by making his COUNT. and YIKES. I literally have to step away every time I read this. From the supervillain monologue, to everyone groaning at him and then simply ignoring him (knowing what's about to happen), to Crawlings immediately poisoning and temporarily paralyzing himself the SECOND he gets a chance to be the Final Girl. And then he gets thrown back into jail. Plus the fact that he's on the floor about to pass out still wondering when the "Genius Serum" will kick in. uhhh. y'know, Crawlings, I might not be a genius either, but I have the slightest inkling that all may not be going according to plan. 11/10
And there we have it folks! The final rankings are:
Hertz: 6
The Katz Brothers: 9
Garrotte: 14
Sharpe: 22
McCracken: 35
And, in first place, with 36 points, our beloved Crawlings.
In conclusion,

What is Barry's relationships with Courage The Cowardly Dog characters
Barry and Courage - Courage and Barry are rarely close friends to each other. Barry does look up to him for his bravery, although the two have a thing in common which is having anxiety[also my lil headcanon for Courage.] Courage is shown to be very protective of him
Barry and Muriel Bagge - Barry and Muriel show love and care for eachother, with Barry thinking of her as a grandmother figure to him. Muriel shows support and cares Barry for his health and happiness. She treats him the same way she treats Courage
Barry and Eustace Bagge - The two don't show to get along well, Eustace verbally abuses, enjoys making fun of and tormenting him just how he does with Courage.
Barry and Computer - Since being a sarcastic ai jerk to Courage, he was the same to Barry when the anxious cat first met him, in which makes Courage defend the cat against the ai. However, when Barry came to him after he got ab#sed by the spider crime mob leader Toxin. Computer suddenly felt a bit of sympathy for the poor fella. He started to be aware when Barry said about his anxiety, that he meant that he has anxiety. Computer becomes a mentor/guardian to Barry, teaching him ways to control his anxiety
Barry, Bunny and Kitty - The lesbian couple are shown to be really good friends to Barry. Sometimes the two babysit him and they act like aunts to him. Barry does respect and care for the two equally. Bunny and Kitty are shown to be really proud of Barry for saving their adoptive daughter Bunitty from Mad Dog
Barry and Shirley - Barry does show respect for Shirley. But he tends to worry about the curses she carries onto others
Barry and Charlie the Mouse - Though the two don't interact more often, they are really good friends. Charlie does help him on what issue is happening and offers him some advice as help
Barry and Katz - Katz is shown to hate the nervous cat while Barry fears him mostly. Katz even shows any intent to kill, torture or harm Barry or even manipulate him into going into his scam businesses
Barry and Le Quack - The two are enemies. Le Quack does manipulate/exploit Barry to join his side and get him to do crime sprees.
Barry and Cajun Fox - Cajun Fox mostly finds the nervous lil cat as an ingredient for his Cajun cuisines, he mostly attempts to kidnap him for that, Barry is terrified him because of his deadly taste for humans and anthropomorphic animals.
Barry and Black Puddle Queen - Barry does fear the Queen of the Black Puddle. She wasn't aware the fact that Barry is a child
Barry and Clucthing Foot - Despite that they don't interact more often, Barry does consider Clutching Foot as a threat to him
Barry and Weremole - Barry is pretty afraid of that beast. But despite that, he doesn't know when he first saw one until Computer gave him the info about them. As for Weremole, he will just straight up maul him to death
Barry and Banana Suit Dealer - The two have interacted a little. When Banana Dealer convince him to buy a government top secret, Barry politely declines. The two are shown to be neutral
Barry and Freaky Fred - At first Barry appears to become friendly with Fred, but he was traumatised when Fred having his intent to shave Barry's fur off. But then Barry heads to the Home For Freaky Barbers where he(Fred) is kept in for his life to reconcile for being traumatised of him
Barry and Mad Dog - Barry really hates Mad Dog for what he did to Bunny, Kitty and Bunitty. Though he did save Bunitty's life after he slammed his(Mad Dog) face into the windshield
Barry and Cruel Veterinarian - Barry really hates this man's guts! He even was aware of what he is going to do with Courage. And he also knew that he hired Toxin to kill him alive
Barry and King Ramses - The two don't show interaction with eachother. But Ramses shows honour and respect after Barry gives him back his slab
Barry and the Cat Thieves/Jim and Paul - Barry dislikes the duo, since their both thieves and they wanted to have King Ramses' slab for themselves. When they Barry holding it, they asked him to give it to them. But Barry declines and he does the right thing by returning it to the King
Barry and Courage's Parents/Henry and Teresa - The three haven't met eachother, but if they would actually meet eachother for the first time, they would really get along well
Barry and Fusilli - Barry became a victim of Fusilli's puppetry, The crocodile got him into his show but then he was disappointed by Barry quitting performing for him

Lost Chicago Building 6 - The Granada Theater
By Roger Jones, August 2023
Tumblr media
The Granada at night
I only saw a movie at the Granada Theater once, in the late 1970s; I believe the offering was Murder by Death. Nonetheless, I always marveled at the movie palace's facade every time the el train passed the Loyola stop on Chicago's north side.

Historical details:
Opened: Tuesday, September 21, 1926
Status: Closed/Demolished Sunday, September 30, 1990
Style: Spanish Baroque
Seats: 3,443
The Granada Theater was a 3,400–seat movie palace located at 6427-41 North Sheridan Road, in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago and adjacent to Loyola University. Constructed in 1926 for the Marks Brothers, major theatre operators in the U.S., Edward E. Eichenbaum was the principal designer for the architectural firm of Levy & Klein. Eichenbaum also designed the Marbro, Regal, and Century theaters in Chicago.
The Marks Brothers operated the theatre until 1934, when Balaban and Katz purchased the property. That firm and its successors—United Paramount Theatres, ABC Great States Theatres and Plitt Theatres—operated the facility until approximately 1978. From then until the mid-eighties, it was used sporadically for rock concerts and presented midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for several years.
Despite all attempts to save the theater, Senior Life Styles Corporation purchased the property and demolished it in 1989-90 for a planned apartment/commercial structure.
The new 16–story apartment tower and shopping arcade constructed in 1991 was named "Granada Center.”  Loyola University eventually purchased the structure and transformed it into 12 floors of student apartments over a base containing parking, retail and university offices.

Thanks to Cinema Treasures for the following details:
Built in 1926 for the Marks Brothers circuit, this was one of the largest movie palaces on Chicago’s Far North Side, located in Rogers Park. The Granada Theatre was opened September 18, 1926 with a Jack Haskell stage show “Eastern Nights” and on the screen Belle Bennett in “The Lilly”. The Wurlitzer 4 manual 20 rank theatre organ was opened by organist Alfred F. Brown The proscenium was 60ft wide and the stage 32ft deep. Seating was provided for 3,448, with 1,833 in the orchestra level and 1,615 seats in the balcony.
On November 18, 1932, the theatre was acquired by the Publix/Balaban & Katz chain and it was briefly closed, reopening on July 29, 1933 with John Barrymore in “Reunion In Vienna” & Laurel & Hardy in “Me and My Pal”. The Granada Theatre was originally designed by Edward Eichenbaum (of the firm of Levy & Klein) for both live stage shows and movies, but by the 1940’s, was only showing films. On November 19, 1975 the World Premiere of Jack Nicholson in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was held at the Granada Theatre, with Jack Nicholson & Louise Fletcher appearing ‘in person’. It remained open as a movie theatre, operated by Plitt Theatres until the late-1970’s.
Information from the HABS Report on the Granada:
The report goes on to say that the primary reasons for the Granada’s historic significance include:
its size, as it was one of the three largest movie theatres ever built in Chicago, the other two being the Uptown and the Chicago theatres; its elaborate design, often cited as the most ornate in the city; its place as the flagship of the Marks Brothers empire, who were second only to Balaban and Katz in the construction and operation of opulent movie palaces; and its association with architect Edward Eichenbaum.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking element of the HABS report is one of its closing statements: “The Granada had survived in essentially unaltered condition until the past two years (1988-89), when it was left unattended and the weather and vandalism were allowed to proceed unchecked.” This was a demolition that could have been avoided.
The HABS report included several dozen photos of the interior and exterior of the Granada Theatre, taken shortly before demolition. While it is depressing to see the damage the theatre suffered in its final two years, especially during a time when movie palaces across the country were being renovated to the benefit of communities large and small, these photos do show in great detail the artistry of Edward Eichenbaum.

In addition:
...the Granada was still in remarkably good shape as recently as 1987. While it was allowed to deteriorate after that, eyewitnesses to the demolition mourn the fact that there was little wrong with the theatre structurally, that it could, in fact, have been saved.
Despite efforts to landmark the theatre or get it reopened, the Granada’s fate was sealed. Much of the terra cotta of the facade was stripped and sold off, as were many of the interior decorative elements. One of the large chandeliers from the lobby was salvaged and now hangs in the Riviera Theatre. Another, smaller, chandelier hangs in the Music Box on Southport.
