i feel like in every “yue lives” au i’ve seen, the presupposition is that if yue had remained human, she would’ve joined the gaang and/or become chief of the nwt, or otherwise found agency through means beyond spiritual transcendence. and i just don’t think that’s true, or frankly, very interesting. yue becoming the moon spirit is both tragic because she is sacrificing her life for the sake of the world, but also celebratory because it implies a reclamation of agency (as illustrated by her choice to kiss sokka) as a spirit who possesses capabilities beyond the very narrow & stifling limitations imposed on her as a princess. supposing that arnook was a slightly better tactician (realized that letting sokka, the only warrior who actually has an any intel on & experience with the leaders of the siege, lead the mission to assassinate zhao, while prioritizing hahn’s safety as future chief, was a better call than sacrificing hahn and limiting sokka; using waterbenders to create icebergs to sink the fleet before they arrived at the wall; etc.), meaning zhao did not actually kill hahn/tui, leads to a scenario wherein yue marries hahn and hahn eventually becomes chief. imo that possibility would lead to a far more complex, compelling exploration of yue and her relationships than a revisionist whitewashing of the darker implications of yue’s character, wherein she is magically granted agency & power because we want good things for our perfect babygirl. or maybe i just love darkness, suffering, & tragedy… who can say

has anyone brought up how great it was for them to change hahn??? i didnt have that on my list of things i needed necessarily but it was so refreshing and touching. i loved the lack of miscommunication and love triangle tropes because you actually dont need them for a good story or root for characters. but the fact that they changed him to not be an ignorant jerk to someone i could actually see getting approval as a leader. hes honorable through and through. it made his ending tragic, as it should be in cases of young people joining a war because they had no choice. i went from being like ‘oop thats what you get’ to leading into such devastation that added to the northern water tribe tragedy. i loved that change.

Phantasy Star IV characters but with mega man aesthetics! (I'm editing this post and adding more as I go. I deleted the original game artwork because the post was getting too long)

Younger characters tended to be presented more sympathetically, so this is an interesting question. Please reblog for more votes.

So… in the modern AU, does Hahn exist? Does he have a role? Is he some random jerk at their school who wanted Yue? Mushy’s gotta know.
when it comes to modern aus, the trick is merging contemporary tropes with the implications of the source material. for instance, in a modern high school setting, hahn is of course the arrogant meathead jock (quarterback of the football team or whatever) who feels entitled to any girl he wants. yue is the most beautiful girl in his class, and he wants her. he thinks that she's much to good for sokka, and makes that opinion known. this is pretty obvious stuff. but then theres the fact that hahn is in an arranged marriage with yue. i imagine arnook to be some kind of titan of industry (chief of the northern water tribe versus chief executive officer) who is in a business alliance (i know that's probably not the correct term) with hahn's father, and ever since they were children, there's been this tacit agreement that once they reached a certain age, they would marry. because hahn marrying yue isn't just an arranged marriage, but a political marriage. so in modern au, hahn wouldn't just feel entitled to yue out of arrogance, but genuinely feels as if they are fated to marry, and resents sokka for swooping in and stealing something from him that is rightfully his. now, arnook likes sokka a lot, but he also likes his money, and knows that giving to yue to hahn is more lucrative and strategic. but because it's 21st century new jersey, he can't just sell his daughter off for power. he has to try to convince her to change her mind, even though any idiot can see that sokka is far better suited to her than hahn. so while yue doesn't actually have any legal obligation to marry hahn, she still has to suffer through many tedious, torturous dinners with hahn's family (although thankfully they have phones in this world, which means that yue can text sokka amusing little updates under the table), and with hahn's incessant flirtation, not to mention his snide, classist remarks to sokka during class (which he mostly ignores except for that one time he talked about yue like she was a piece of meat. katara filmed the whole fight it was the greatest day of her life btw). after yue dies, hahn starts a rumor that sokka killed her, but it sort of has the opposite effect as intended, since hahn is saying that and hahn is always wrong (e.g., he thought the capital of new jersey was new york), so it actually helps to alleviate some of sokka's guilt. not much, granted, but still. thanks hahn.

Here’s a poll idea. Thanks!
Question: Which of the male main cast proved himself to be the best boyfriend by the end of the show? (The basic criteria might be something like devotion, thoughtfulness, or communication.)
Option 1: Aang (to Katara)
Option 2: Sokka (to Suki)
Option 3: Zuko (to Mai)
Option 4: Jet (to Katara)
Option 5: See Results

Hahn (16) is quite a bit jealous that the princess is spoken for when it should have been HIM becoming the next chief. He and his group trick Zuko (14) into climbing the cliffs.
Zuko falls all the way in and has to melt his way out. But it's OK because he found a gem that perfectly matches Yue's eyes! A couple years later, this will be the gem he uses to make her betrothal necklace.

Yue's necklace
Tumblr media
I noticed one thing about it. Kanna's necklace has a meaning – Pakku carved the symbol of waterbending for his fianceé, who will become a member of family of waterbending masters. But what Hahn had in mind?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His carving reminds me of Hakoda's armour. It symbolises the moon but most important it is a symbol for the chief. It seems logical 'cause Hahn first of all wanted to marry the chief's daughter.
It is just a theory but I tried to make Yue's necklace like this.
