A Small, Frail, Thread - Hunter x Non-binary/GN! Reader (Soulmate AU - Red Thread) - Part 1
Requested by Grape67 (AO3)
Word Count: 3.4k (3,469)
Request: i keep asking people for soulmate aus but they never finish them red string of fate perhaps??? angst?????????
YES ABSOLUTELY
Summary: Hunter awakens to realize he has a red thread tied around his finger. He is determined to find out what it means, despite not knowing where to start.
                                              ⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
The young male breathed in deeply as he awoke, then exhaled. He sat up in his bed, his eyes still closed, and steadied himself. It was six a.m., and the sun was just barely coming out. Its golden rays crept over the land, spreading its gentle warmth over the world. A ray of gold gleamed through the window and onto the male. He rubbed his face tiredly, and then aggressively rubbed his eyes. He felt his eyes struggle to open, but forced himself to open them slightly. The male yawned deeply, closed his eyes again, and rubbed his face with both hands. As he opened his eyes, he saw a small, red thread with a neat bow tied around his pinkie.
He exhaled, utterly bothered by its presence. “Oh, very funny…” He muttered. He reached to untie the thread, but he couldn’t seem to feel it. He blinked in surprise and tried again. He tried pulling it, tugging it, and untying it, yet the thread did nothing. The young witch gave up and sighed again. He examined the thread closely, attempting to put together why he couldn’t take it off. He exhaled sleepily, remembering he had a job to do and duties to tend. Maybe it’s one of the scouts using an illusion spell as a prank. Ha! Very funny… They’ll see.
As he got up and out of his bed, he realized the thread led a trail under his door. He tugged on it again but it only seemed to stretch. The male stared at his pinkie, his palm open, and then at the door. “Hmm…” He grumbled angrily, “This is no way to treat the Emperor’s nephew…” The male muttered.
A little, red bird flew onto his shoulder and chirped curiously. “Flapjack! Hey buddy.” The male reached out and pet the bird gently on its head, and the bird sang happily. “Hey, Flapjack, do you know who tied this thread to my finger?” The male raised his pinkie and showed it to the palisman. “I woke up and I saw it, I don’t know who put it here.” The little bird stared at his finger and chirped a response. “What do you mean you can’t see it?! It’s- it’s right here!!” He exclaimed, emphasizing with his other hand. The bird sang back to him. “I- I don’t know why you can’t see it. Maybe it’s a special illusion spell…” The male trailed off in thought, “Or maybe Belos is summoning me! Yeah! That’s probably it!” He exclaimed excitedly. The bird chirped, agreeing with him.
The male smiled, “You’ll have to stay hidden though, okay?” He explained, raising his index finger, inviting the small palisman. The bird chirped happily and flew onto it. The male smiled and pet him again. “I love you, Flapjack. Stay safe for me, okay?” Flapjack sang to him happily and nuzzled his finger. Hunter smiled and continued petting the bird. “I’m going to find out where this thread goes- it might even be my next mission!” He explained excitedly. The bird replied with another song, and the young witch smiled again. “I need to get ready. I’ll let you come as long as you promise to stay hidden.” Flapjack chirped his promise and Hunter smiled. “Okay, let’s get ready then.”
The male changed into his black shirt, golden vest, and white cloak. He slipped on his black, leather gloves, flexing his fingers in them. Hunter looked at his desk. There laid a round, golden mask with two eye holes. It almost resembled an owl. Hunter glanced at it, reached out, then hesitated.
The little bird chirped curiously, looking up at the young male. His hair dangled in between his eyes. “Not, yet. I want to know where this goes first,” He held up his finger and examined the thread again.  Flapjack cooed and sang. “C’mon, let go.”
The male reached for the doorknob, looking back at the mask one final time. His view shifted to the red thread, calling to him. I want to know what you are. He sighed, turned the knob, and pulled the door open.
Hunter marched down the halls of the castle, turning left and right, going downstairs, all as the thread demanded. He avoided looking at scouts or guards in the castle. If Flapjack can’t see it, they might not either.
Hunter looked up, realizing he had reached the castle’s gates. The male froze in the black shadow. He looked down at his finger, his eyes following the thread as it crept under the gates. He exhaled in disappointment. Damn.
“Hey, Blondie.”
The male snapped around, recognizing the voice. “Steve! Hey,” He said, waving at him.
“What are you doing out here? The emperor has been looking for you. He wanted you early this morning,” Steve explained smoothly.
His face flushed in embarrassment and his heart sank in terror.
“I-I-...” He stuttered, not knowing what to do. He felt Flapjack shuffle around under his shirt. “I thought I was being called somewhere…” He admitted nervously.
“How come?” Steve asked, his voice echoing behind his mask.
Hunter held up his finger, “I woke up and I saw a red thread wrapped around my finger- I thought it was a prank at first,” he explained. Steve leaned forward and peered through his mask, empty eyes staring at Hunter’s finger. “Then, I realized the thread continued and led all the way... here… past the gates…” Hunter turned to look at the gates again, silent reminders of his restrictions.
“I don’t see anything, sorry man,” Steve replied, straightening his back.
Hunter’s ears bent back in shame as his face flushed madly. “O-oh…” Hunter murmured.
“I’ve heard people mumble about these things. Red string leading to another person and whatnot, but I’ve never seen them,” Steve explained, sighing sadly. “EVERYONE seems to have one… everyone except me…” He hung his head down sadly, staring at his feet. Hunter frowned uncomfortably at the scout before him. “Anyways you should get going, you know how Belos gets when his orders aren’t followed.”
“Y-yeah…” Hunter replied nervously.
Steve sighed heavily, “All of it so much… Steve is beginning to regret. HIS. Choices…” He sang as he walked away from the young male.
Hunter turned to face the gates again. They were like silent golems demanding him to stay put. His eyes traced the thread carefully as it slipped beneath the gates. Hunter shifted his gaze down the hall, knowing the exact path to the throne room. Something bothered him. Suddenly, he didn’t want to go, he wanted to find the end of the thread.
The young male sighed, shifting around, his eyes locked on the delicate thread hidden beneath the gates. He had left the castle the day before for a mission. It wouldn’t be until the end of the week that he would be allowed out again. The male turned and began to march down to the throne room, to the emperor waiting for him.
                                                 ⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
Hunter had turned back around when he was halfway at his destination. He rushed to his room, hastily snatched his mask, and scurried back down.
The Golden Guard approached the open doors of the throne room, a tall, muscular male standing before him. A purple cape was elegantly draped over the right side of his body. His eyes glowed green and his pursed lips reflected the dancing firelight.
“If it isn’t the little prince,” He sang, looking down at the male. The Golden Guard blushed in embarrassment, feeling the mask reflect his heat back to him. “About time you showed up. What? Slept in today? You know better…” He grumbled, looking down at the Golden Guard in disgust.
“I thought I was called elsewhere, Darius-” He began.
“Oh, you thought? What a surprise, he thinks!” Darius exclaimed, smirking at the small male. “Hmph, don’t you know to do as you’re told?” He taunted, his purple hair bubbling up like the fire in the torches.
The Golden Guard curled his fists in embarrassment.
“Go in,” Darius muttered. “The Emperor has been waiting for you…” He walked past the male, leaving the dark room and walking into the hallway.
The male made his way in. He followed the long carpet leading up to the throne. Scouts stood at attention along the walls, staring forward lifelessly like perfect statues. A large, black, heart beat above the throne steadily, filling the room with a gentle rhythm of beats and thuds. On the throne sat a tall, slim, masked figure. The Golden Guard made his way to the steps of the throne and kneeled before the emperor.
“Emperor Belos, I apologize for my tardiness,” He began, speaking boldly behind his mask. “I believed you had summoned me elsewhere and I had gone to follow,” He trembled slightly behind the mask.
“Hunter, you know I called you here,” The emperor responded in his soft, mechanic voice. “I call you here after each mission, and after each mission, you come here,” He waved his hand at the boy. “Now, why did you think I called you elsewhere?”
Hunter felt his face flush red. Fear filled his veins as his heartbeat quickened. “I saw a red thread tied around my finger. I-I believed you had left it a-as a sign for me to follow i-it,” He explained nervously, bowing his head forward before the emperor. “I apologize.”
The emperor tensed for a moment, clutching his throne harshly, and then rose. He stepped down from the throne and towards Hunter. “Come,” He said, and the male rose immediately to his side. “Hunter, it is good you have told me this. Never keep anything from me. Secrets are just as dangerous as wild magic,” He explained. Hunter tensed, feeling Flapjack’s gentle feathers against him. “Now tell me, where did you see this… ‘red thread’, Hunter?” He asked, stopping to face the male behind him.
Hunter held up his gloved hand. He could see the thread around his finger despite the black leather. “It’s on my pinky,” He began, “I woke up this morning a-and saw it there, “I thought you were summoning m-me… s-so I followed i-it.”
Belos loomed down to examine his finger. “Where? I don’t see this thread.” Hunter felt his heart sink. “There’s nothing there, are you sure?” He asked, rising back up. “You haven’t been involved with any wild magic, have you?” He asked, his blue pupils glowing through the darkness of the mask. Hunter felt himself shrink as he stared into them. He began to tremble slightly in fear. His blue pupils stood out so that they appeared to be the only light in the room.
Hunter unfroze and shook his head, “N-n-no! Of course not!” He exclaimed, almost pleading Belos to spare his life. “I know how dangerous wild magic is! T-that’s why I asked you! I-I-I-”
“Hunter, this is a good sign,” He explained merrily.  “This only proves that the Titan has big plans for you, Hunter,” Belos said. Hunter gasped in bewilderment. “You see, this thread doesn’t really lead anywhere. It’s just a reminder of the link between you and the Titan. Wherever you go, this thread will follow you, Hunter.”
The Golden Guard looked down at his finger proudly, feeling a sense of value fulfill him.
“Just, keep this in mind, Hunter,” Belos murmured. “Tampering with wild magic will cut the tie between you and the Titan. The thread will never lead you to anything or anyone specifically,” He continued, placing a hand over Hunter’s shoulder. He loomed down, his eyes glowing a bright, menacing blue. “DO. NOT. Follow it.” He muttered harshly.
Hunter trembled before the glowing blue, “B-but I saw it lead somewhere!” He exclaimed.
The Emperor’s grip tightened around the male, “DO NOT follow it, Hunter,” He hissed. “Those who have tried following this thread only find themselves a fate worse than that the Titan had planned.” He rose up, carefully examining the thread before looking at Hunter again. “Respect the Titan’s will and he will guide you. Do not tamper with it, DO NOT. Follow. It.” The Emperor made his way back to his throne. “I know you will not let me down, right, Hunter?” He turned his head to face the male behind him.
Hunter trembled as he straightened his back, and then dropped to his knee. Beads of sweat adorned his face behind the mask.
“I won’t let you down, Emperor Belos,” He replied mechanically in utter terror.
The Emperor smiled behind his mask, the blue pupils fading away. “Very good, Hunter. You are dismissed.”
                                                ⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
The witch shuffled around their bed as they woke up. The golden sun had been illuminating the world for a few hours by the time they awoke. They shuffled awkwardly, sitting up and rubbing their eyes hastily as they prepared themselves for another day. The warmth of their blankets begged them to stay, to rest in their comfort, but they knew better than to sleep in.
(Y/N) fell back onto their bed tiredly, waiting for their mind to fully awaken. They blinked slowly, their eyes adapting to the warm gold of the sun filling their room. They reached their hand up to let the sun dance on their fingers and smiled slightly. The shining light radiated heat onto their fingers, and a small thread shined slightly as it reflected the sun’s light.
The witch shot up, wide-eyed, and suddenly fully awake. They dug their fingers into their bed with one hand as they steadied themselves.
“What?!” They whispered to themselves, examining their pinky. They turned their hand over several times as they examined the thread. “What? What?! H-how?!” (Y/N) muttered to themselves in shock.
They knew too well what the thread was. Their face flushed red as they realized they were wrong about everything. Ever since they were little, they lacked the thread so many others had.
The thread was said to unite two souls together; two souls to form one. Many called it the “Red Thread of Fate”, others simply “The Red Thread”. (Y/N) had even heard it be called “The red pinky string or something”. The sacred thread would connect soulmates so they would always have a way to find one another. It was a thin, red thread tied to the pinky of each person. The thread would stretch and shrink, depending on the distance between the two souls, but it would never tear.
(Y/N) had been sure they were meant to be alone, and they had accepted it. They never saw any thread tied to their finger. (Y/N) shuffled out of their bed and faced their closed door. The red string slithered under it, beckoning them to follow.
They stared at the door, thoughts flooding through their mind. How did this happen? Why did this happen? Why now, suddenly, after all these years? They looked back at their pinky, the neat bow standing out. Who? Who could it possibly be? Everyone I know has a thread… (Y/N) sighed and turned away from the door, looking through their window at the golden sun outside.
                                                ⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
The Golden Guard marched down to his room. He turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. He walked into the empty room, filled by the fading light of the sun. The male shut the door behind him and went to his bed, collapsing onto it, exhausted. He sighed deeply, covering his face with his hands.
The little palisman crept out of his cape and onto his chest, singing gently to him.
Hunter opened his eyes and tilted his head up. “Flapjack!” He smiled and lifted his head up. “Hey buddy, long day, huh?” He pet the bird's head gently and it whistled happily.
Hunter’s view shifted to the thread on his pinky. He knew Belos had told him not to follow it, but he longed to know where it led. Hunter recalled Steve’s words, “Red string leading to another person and whatnot”. He paused for a moment, could it really lead to someone else? Who?
Flapjack noticed Hunter was staring at his hand and chirped to him. “Hmm? Oh, i-it’s just the thread.  I want to know what it is…” Hunter trailed off and continued to pet the little bird. Flapjack sang back to him. “Well, Belos said ‘The Titan had big plans for me’, but Steve says these can lead to people. I’m… not sure though. I’ve never heard of these,” Hunter explained to the small palisman.
The little bird chirped and flapped its wings excitedly, bouncing further along his chest. “What? Have you heard of these before?” Hunter sat up and beckoned for the little bird to hop onto his finger. Flapjack bounced onto it and sang. “You can’t see it, but you know what it is?” Hunter asked excitedly. The bird chirped happily, “Really? You knew someone who had a red thread too?!” Hunter leaned down to the bird as it continued singing to him.
Hunter’s eyes widened as Flapjack told him of a person who had claimed to see the thread, and how they found their soulmate because of it. Hunter looked to his door and stared at the thread that slipped under it. He sighed, remembering what Belos had said, and shuddered. Hunter turned to his window, watching the sun fade away into the hills.
Hunter longed for an answer, for a reason. If this thread led to someone, why appear now? To who would it lead? What would be their connection to him? And if it really did connect him to the Titan, why would Belos keep that until now? What was his true purpose?
Flapjack chirped curiously as he watched Hunter. The boy turned to face the little bird and pet him gently. “I want to know where this thread leads- whether it’s to something or someone. I want to know what I’m meant for,” He murmured to the little bird. Flapjack watched him as he stared out the window again. “And if it really leads to someone… I want to know who they are. Maybe… maybe I have a soulmate,” He said hopefully, looking back to the thread.
Flapjack chirped excitedly. “I know, I want to go now too,” He pet the bird gently, “But we have to wait until the weekend. I’ll go out for a mission, and we can find out where this thread leads- together.”
                                                ⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
A shadow swam around the walls, echoing laughter and mischievous giggles.
“You were sca-ared!!” The boyish voice sang, giggling as it continued to swim. “I saw you! You were sca-ared! Sca-ared! Sca-ared!!” It twirled and jumped from wall to wall.
The slim figure stood before the shadow, watching it with a slight smirk.
“No, no,” The figure explained in a soft voice, “All it did was remind me of someone. That doesn’t matter though, I know how to keep him in line.”
The shadow giggled, “Oh yeah?! Well, I saw you!” It chimed back, swirling next to the figure. “He’s just like your brother? Isn’t he?!” The shadow smiled at the discomfort of the figure below him. The shadow split into two figures on opposite walls, a thin thread connecting them. One was a masculine shadow with a strand of hair dangling in front of his head and the other figure was a feminine shadow with short, wild hair.
“A small, frail thread
Tainted by red
Connecting two
Unites, me and YOU!”
Tumblr media
It sang loudly. It was the same voice yet it echoed as if it were two people chanting in unison. The shadow came back together, forming a boyish figure that appeared to be in sleepwear. “Heh, you WERE right! Out of all the Grimwalkers, he’s the one most like him!” It giggled in glee, swimming around and splitting into what seemed like a hundred shadows, all identical to each other. They were all the same; cloaked and masked shadows. They filled the room, swarming around one another.
“Yes, but that doesn’t matter, Collector,” He explained, “Hunter isn’t like the previous attempts. I say, 'The Titan has big plans for you,' and he listens,” The slim male spoke softly, feeling his blood run cold as he stared at the figures.
“Hmm,” The shadows sang in unison, collecting back to form the Collector, “Whatever,” He muttered, “I’m just saying. He REAAALLLYYYY liked that thread,” He replied, looking down at the male.
The male felt his hands freeze and begin to tingle as he recalled his brother: the joy that overwhelmed him as he realized the thread he always talked about connected him to a mysterious witch from another realm. The joy they shared together when they finally united. The abandonment he felt when his brother left him for a witch.
A witch.
He snapped back and looked up at the boy, a gentle smirk on his face. “It won’t happen again, Collector. I’ll make sure of it.”

A/N: I wanted to do this one so much sooner and I lied when I said I was gonna catch up on my requests. I gOt hIt bY a CaR (i'm fine lol).
I also really wanted to get it started. My brain is scattered all over the place and I have some specific scenes planned out. I'm sorry this one didn't have much involvement with Hunter and the reader. I'm setting up the scene and I swear I'll have the next part out soon.
Also like I mentioned I haven't seen all of ToH so when I did research of how Belos treats Hunter I almost cried jhsdddhwkhdegj

Stop Being Snarky — Hunter x gn! reader

I quickly shuffled my way towards the captain scout of the emperor's coven. Sir Osran has told me I was joining one of their missions. It was supposedly going to be dangerous, and they wanted a talented oracle to join their forces, and that’s where I came in.
I was considered a prodigy. I was only sixteen and serving as the Oracle Coven Head’s assistant. Though deep down I knew I wasn’t a prodigy. It was all nepotism at play. My grandparents were esteemed healers, and they had friends in the oracle coven. I happen to have a knack at oracle magic and always found it easy. Though I don’t believe I’m exactly qualified to be in such a high position. I had much to learn but since my position is time consuming I had to ‘graduate early’ as my family put it.
I kept my hood up, my golden mask hiding the upper half of my face. It wasn’t required or a part of dress code, I requested it since people didn’t like to take me seriously. Not only did the older members look down on me for my age, a lot of them also talked about how I needed to prove myself, and how I needed to earn my respect. I agreed, but it certainly didn’t help my already low self esteem.
Coming back to reality, I looked over the scouts who seemed to be standing around…in confusion? Were they not debriefed before coming out here? Especially for a dangerous mission. After all, we were looking for clues for a wild witch that has been known for not being merciful.
“Does your team know why we’re here?” I asked out shortly. After all, the only time people actually respected me was when I was stern. Which wasn’t in my nature, but it was necessary.
“N-not yet Mx (l/n),” The captain stuttered out nervously. I felt my eyebrows crease as my view on the Emperor’s coven lowered. “We didn’t have much notice…” They trailed off, probably sensing my disappointment. Besides, if I was given time to prepare, these scouts should have as well.
“I don’t need excuses,” I sighed out, already exhausted. I’ll make sure to talk to their superior about keeping their underlings up to date. That’s the only way to keep your coven well organized and keep everyone prepared.
But before I could call out to everyone to explain what we were here to do today, the sound of boots on dirt seemed to alert everyone and they got into formation. Heads held high, backs straight, uniforms pristine. It would be impressive if they weren’t just doing it to please their superior. Now trust me, I’m a kid, I know witches can’t be at attention 24/7, but they should show some decency on a mission. Besides, they had an image to carry.
“Everyone branch this area out for clues,” The Golden Guard ordered. “The wild witch Lars Sephiran was spotted near here recently. Dismissed.” “Wait!” I called out. Stopping the scouts from moving. They stood stiffly, unsure what to do. “You call that a debriefing?”
“Would you like to do it then Mx. (l/n)?” The Golden Guard replied.
“I would,” I said pointedly.
This wasn’t the first time I had an encounter with him. We seemed to be around similar ages, his boyish voice told it all. But I knew that he was smart and experienced. You’d think since our stories are similar we’d get along, something to bond over y’know? Wrong. He was a little shit. And though I didn’t like starting things with people…he was an exception. He’d like to get on my nerves so I got on his.
“Scouts!” I called out to gain their attention. “We are here to hunt and find the wild witch Lars Sephiran. He is a dangerous witch, so be careful. He was spotted near the caves in the forest. So I’d start searching near there first. Do not be a hero, once spotted, alert everyone. Thank you for your time, you are now dismissed.”
Everyone nodded and began to disperse. Sitting down under a tree, I closed my eyes to focus on finding the witch telepathically, seeing if they still may be in the area. But as I said before, I was still learning, and telepathy was not my strong suit. The sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling was distracting, but I tried my hardest to tune it out. I took deep breaths in and out, blocking out the sounds of the scouts minds. And…I heard something, someone. Someone whose mind was not a scout.
‘I need this to be successful, then uncle will finally praise…I mean prove my worth,’ I felt my eyebrows crease. Yet my concentration was broken by an annoying voice.
“Already taking a break?” Of course it's the Golden Guard. “It hasn't even been ten minutes yet.”
“I’m trying to find Lars,” I spoke out, slowly opening my eyes. “Though I can’t say the same for you.”
I smirked slightly as I noticed his demeanor deflate slightly.
“Now if you could let me focus, I’d like to see if Lars is even still in this area,” I said.
I closed my eyes as Golden Guard decided to actually follow my advice for once. Once again I pushed all distractions away to focus on the mindscape. This always took a lot of magic energy, so having to do it a second time was making me feel exhausted. I knew the mind I was listening to before wasn’t Lars’, so when I found it again I brushed it off. Though I was curious to listen more, it wasn’t my job to invade innocent minds and their privacy…well I mean it kinda is but not exactly either. All of a sudden I felt pain hit the back of my head and in the mindscape I saw a rush of fire. Quickly I left it, knowing what this meant. But I couldn’t help the yelp that escaped my lips and I grabbed my head that was pounding.
Having a headache after entering the mindscape wasn’t uncommon, but this was something else. Lars is smart in keeping their mind protected, but that also means they’re still close.
“Mx. (l/n)!”  A scout near me exclaimed and came near me, looking around as if I was attacked physically.
“I’m fine,” I panted out, still grabbing my head in pain. Every little sound, every light, every touch was too much at the moment. My head felt like it was tearing itself apart. I was not fine, but I will not show weakness. “Alert the Golden Guard that Lars is still near.”
They seemed hesitant, which I found slightly endearing, but I nodded at them to leave. I kept trying to keep myself from going crazy at the pain I felt in my head. It felt like it was on fire, making me want to dunk my head under water. I felt tears well up in the corners of my eyes but I refuse to let this get the best of me. I will not be looked down on for this accident. We will catch this witch, even if it's the last thing I do…ok well that’s kinda dramatic but my image will be shattered if I fail this.
The sounds of boots crunching on the ground sounds like daggers in my head, but I look up, even if it feels like I’m going to pass out from dizziness. The sound of their voice blurred into the constant buzzing as I was mostly just focusing on staying conscious. But I saw a blue circle and the scout checking my head. They must know how to heal. Good to have on a mission. I kept these thoughts going, trying to distract myself from this excruciating pain.
Slowly the pain lessened. The need to cry from pain went away. Finally it got to the point where I even felt rejuvenated. I thanked the scout for their work and stood up. I’m not sure how long I was out, but I looked around.
“Status update please,” I requested from the scout.
“They found evidence of the wild witch and are in the middle of tracking,” They replied.
“Lead me to where they went,” I ordered. And we then went off deeper into the forest.
I felt the heat seep through my cape as we walked. Sweat dripped down the side of my face. So I lowered my hood, letting my hair out freely. I sighed out as my mask wasn’t helping my situation, but for now I could deal with it. And I knew we finally caught up once I heard that painstakingly annoying voice. I didn’t say anything as I listened to him scold a scout.
Once he stopped I piped up, “Could I get a brief of what’s happened in my absence?”
“So you finally found time to join us huh?” He mocked. After feeling like I went through hell and back mentally all I could do was glare. “Well we found the wild witches tracks, and we’re continuing to follow them.”
“Alright,” I murmured. “We should be getting closer, they blocked me from entering their mind.”
“I thought you were an esteemed oracle, aren’t you supposed to be able to break that?” Golden Guard taunted. The flash of fire crossed my mind and the phantom pain of what I went through. Not only that, but how unfair it was for a kid like me to be out on a dangerous mission like this.
Looking away I crossed my arms, “If you think it’s so easy then you do it.” I knew I was being petty, I knew I shouldn’t speak this way, but I was so drained currently, I couldn’t filter myself as I normally did.
“We don’t have time for this,” He grumbled, turning away. I followed him as we continued on deeper into the forest, and it got denser. The sun being blocked out gave it a spooky atmosphere.
I’m not sure how long we were walking, but finally we found him. I felt like laughing hysterically as he stood defensively across from us. I was so exhausted from the mental pain and the pain of walking in a hot forest. Not to mention that most of my magic was drained. But nonetheless I got into a defensive position as well.
Lars quickly set off a fire spell and I dodged. Creating a purple circle, I summoned a spirit and had it attack him, but he deflected it with a vine shield. On the other side I saw the Golden Guard attack with his staff, also being deflected. But the scouts were also attacking. There’s no way this witch can beat us all.
But the battle was long, and my amount of magic was waning fast. I was starting to struggle, a lot of scouts were down. But I can’t look weak, not in front of the Golden Guard out of all people. I was starting to get sluggish, but luckily Lars was focused on the Golden Guard. Once again I went in and brought the spirit to attack the wild witch when suddenly a spike of ice hit me in the side of my head and I fell to the ground. What’s up with me and my head getting injured today? I decided that my best bet would be pretending I’m knocked out cold. So that’s what I did. I evened out my breath and kept still.
Then suddenly the sounds of battle went quiet, but I didn’t dare open my eyes. Instead I tried to use the last of my magic and see into the future, who wins this battle? I stopped when once again, the sound of boots alerted me to the presence of someone approaching me. Once they got close enough I grabbed their leg and dragged it towards me, effectively making them fall. Opening my eyes, I found out it was the Golden Guard. So I made no move to get up.
“Sorry,” I said out, ignoring the noise of pain he let out. “Thought you might’ve been Lars.”
“You think I’d get bested by a mere witch like him?” He boasted getting up.
“You fell for the oldest trick in the book, so yeah,” I teased back, closing my eyes again. Honestly everything was spinning and I wanted to just be in my bed.
“Well now is not the time for a nap, we need to report back…,” He trailed off.
Not having the energy I just waved him off and curled up slightly. It got uncomfortably quiet, but then I felt someone pick me up and I felt embarrassed.
I groaned, opening my eyes, but I noticed I was on the Golden Guards' back, “What the Titan are you doing?”
“Saving you,” He replied back, getting on his staff, me behind him.
“I don’t need to be saved,” I growled, this was definitely hitting a sore spot. I’m independent, I don’t need anyone, I could get back on my own…but watching the blurry world pass us I stubbornly realized that I definitely couldn’t.
“The wound in your head has a different story,”  He mumbled back. I felt my body weaken, the throbbing pain in the side of my head not helping my case. Suddenly, my jumbled mind realized my mask wasn’t on.
“M…my mask,” I mumbled out. “I need it.”
“You really think that’s what’s important?” He asked.
“Yes,” I said, continuing to mumble. “They…they’re going to be mean, say I deserved this or something.” My words were slightly slurred, but I felt myself tear up. Shit did I get a concussion or something? Never in my damndest nightmares did this ever happen but now it is. My filter is seemingly gone and all because of a stupid head injury.
The Golden Guard stayed oddly quiet, but my dumbass didn’t take the hint, “They’re all gonna laugh, and say I’m just a kid, and I’m not gonna have my position, and my family is gonna hate me-”
I went silent when we landed, I could barely recognize we were at the palace. The Golden Guard kept an arm around me for support and pulled the hood over my head. Then he led me towards the healing ward and told the healer to keep this quiet. I couldn’t understand why he was being so nice, I mean we are basically enemies…that have to work together.
And throughout it all, he didn’t leave. He stood on the side until I was healed to an extent that I would be fine on my own. Standing up and quietly thanking the coven scout I turned towards the Golden Guard. I guess I should thank him as well.
“Thanks,” I said, eyes cast to the side. “I owe you one.”
“Its…its whatever,” He said, waving it off. “You would’ve done the same (l/n).”
“(Y/n),” I said awkwardly. “You can just call me (y/n).”
I felt uncomfortable as his stare pierced through me. I mean he was wearing a mask but still…
After what felt like hours he finally replied saying, “Call me Hunter.”
I nodded, “Thank you Hunter, I should get going now.”
“...bye,” He said with a wave leaving.
What an unusual day today. Fighting and losing to a wild witch, and getting to know the Golden Guard better. Now to deal with the whispers of my coven. But the thought didn’t seem as bad anymore, knowing I might have a new ally.

In another round of Interesting Details Flouting Around Possibly Worthy Of Notice — Hunter’s hands
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other people have noticed this as well — Hunter grabs his hand after high fiving Gus and grabbed it earlier when it was shaking. The aren’t the only times attention was given to Hunter’s hands, though they’re the first ones I can remember off the top of my head. This, combined with the fact he’s Never shown without gloves in the show, has made people wonder if something is up with his hands — if he’s hiding scars or is missing fingers under his gloves or something
But outside the show…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are by TOH’s crew, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re canon — just because someone works on a show doesn’t mean they can’t have fun and make silly art, after all. The top two are very clearly non-canon from how Hunter is dressed — but consider for a moment this: the top two were drawn by Dana Terrace, the creator of the show, and even featured pretty consistent scarring that we haven’t seen on the show yet (Terrace draws Hunter with a scar on his left arm both times. The scar seems to be high enough on his arm that his short sleeve outfit could conceivably hide it), and the bottom one is a behind the scenes showcase of how Hunter almost looked in Labyrinth Runner. And the all show Hunter without noticeable scars or limb differences in his hands. And they show his hands at several different angles, too — front, back, palms up and down.
Again, these drawings aren’t canon, but they were either done by the person who created Hunter or were almost canon by almost appearing on the show. It’s possible Dana Terrace could be pulling an Alex Hirst and deceiving us with her art, but honestly that doesn’t seem like her MO. Likewise, it’s possible that the Hunter designs were discarded specifically because they showed his hands ungloved, but I’m pretty sure that given the focus on Hunter’s hands in the past, the designers would not be left in the dark when making alt outfits for him (and the derby outfit just held more narrative weight than if they made Hunter a new outfit completely)
So if Hunter doesn’t have anything visually different about his hands, why does the camera focus on them repeatedly and why hasn’t he appeared without gloves on the show yet?
Here’s a couple ideas:
A) they’re a way to show vulnerability and isolation
Hunter looks at his hands in almost confusion after high fiving Gus, and given how he didn’t understand being hugged later in the episode (and his overall isolation from other teens), he might not understand what a high five is. He might have even been startled by it, going off his reaction. And when his hand shook, it was after watching a stone bird crumble while he held it — he was probably thinking about Flapjack, whose life he has reason to worry about, given Belos’s stance on palismen
A lot of people start to shake from anxiety, fear, and exhaustion, too, and given Hunter’s trauma and implied sleep deprivation it isn’t surprising that he’d show physical signs of them
The TOH crew could also just be using gloves to symbolize being separated from the rest of the world, like how in Frozen they were used to symbolize hiding and lies. Given that Hunters arc includes him forming healthy relationships when he was abused and isolated in the past, there could be a huge Elsa moment coming up where he rips the gloves off for good
B) While Hunter might not have physical scars, his hands could still be damaged
Hands are incredibly sensitive, after all. They’re full of nerve endings and are pretty darn fragile all things considered. Hunter is a child soldier, and even though he was given a magic staff by Belos, it’s stated he didn’t get it until after he had become Golden Guard — he, as a non-magic child had to go through the same gruesome training teenage and adult witches had to. There’s also the fact that Belos is all but outright shown to physically abuse him.
Odds are he’s broken fingers or damaged nerves in the past, and while he’s shown to be pretty dexterous, he could still have flare ups of pain (something that could also be triggered by trauma) or might just not be able to physically feel things the way someone with undamaged might feel — they could be hypersensitive or numb and the gloves provide him with a layer of sensation dampening or could help him with his grip
The Owl House is not a show that shies away from disability in its main characters, metaphorically, fantastically, or literally — Eda’s curse is played completely one for one as a metaphor for chronic illness, and Luz is written as neurodivergent. Hunter is already written as someone with PTSD and anxiety, and his magic staffs could be seen as mobility aids. I could totally see TOH showcasing someone with an invisible disability by having a character have not-visibly different but still not completely abled hands
C) hands are a minor symbol for either the Emperor’s Coven, or for the abuse Hunter has endured. Specifically humanoid vs non-humanoid hands
We’ve seen Belos grip Hunter’s shoulder tight enough to at least be comfortable while Belos’s was, essentially, falling apart.
Tumblr media
Belos has also struck walls in front of Hunter hard enough to crack them while Hunter turned away, and even nearly cut Hunter’s face, while in similar gooped up states
And while Hunter isn’t exactly popular in the Emperor’s Coven, Kikimora is debatably the one in the coven who hates him the most, even trying to outright kill him at points, and her entire thing is being a hand demon
Tumblr media
Lastly, Darius
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don’t lie, for a second we all thought Darius was gonna strike Hunter here with his abomination arm, Hunter especially — he visibly braces himself — before gently donking him on the head instead.
While Darius, as a Coven Head, technically isn’t part of the Emperor’s Coven, he’s still part of Belos’s inner circle. Darius in second went from being just another adult who mistreated Hunter to being one of Hunter’s biggest allies and positive parental figures. And it’s visually shown in how his hand went from a monster’s to humanoid’s
While not every character with inhuman hands is evil on this show, the focus on Hunter’s hands vs his enemies and allies could just be simple visual contrast.
D) it could be foreshadowing to a future injury
Granted, I don’t have as much evidence for this one, so it’s just speculation, but like. The audience’s attention is only drawn to Hunter’s hands because it’s meant to be on Hunter’s hands. What if what we’re supposed to take notice of is the fact that Hunter’s hands, though hidden by gloves, are what you expect from hands — unscarred, unhurt, and paired off. Hunter currently has a bounty on his head, after all. Him being killed off just feels kinda unlikely, but I can see him being injured, maybe with a gory discretion shot (not gonna name the show, but we do know Disney is willing to go there)
Maybe a scene of Hunter without his gloves to really bring the audience’s focus in, followed by him being hurt or even losing a hand
What do y’all think?

Hi! 😊
Can I request a fluffy headcanon about Fluff relationship (Friends to Lovers) with his shy!female!human!reader for Hunter (TOH)? 💕 Please??
Hello, miss Butterfly~ thank you for your request!
Tumblr media
-Before you two were dating, you and Hunter were friends
-You had a crush on him; you were always blushing and stuttering when he was with you
-Hunter was very confused about it (he didn't know what crushes were)
-"Y/N? Why is your face red? Are you sick?"
-he would research about it in the library, thinking your crushing were symptoms of a sickness or curse
-until he finally decided to ask you
-"W-well, Hunter..I."
-you didn't know what to say! You were too flustered!
-This led Hunter to begin to ask others, like Darius
-"What? Oh, that girl definitely has a crush on you, little prince."
-Darius had to explain to him what a crush was
-And then Hunter blushed a lot, stumbling on his words
-"W-what? Does she really think of me like that?"
-"Well, why don't you ask her?"
-He was too red to reply, and then he realized: he also had a crush on you!
-This led to many awkward situations, both of you stuttering and turning red when you accidentally touch hands
-Then, Hunter decided to confess to you, under a flowering tree on a hill
-"Y/N, I really like you! You're the sweetest girl I've ever met!"
-"H-hunter, do you really mean that?"
-You two began to date, and he was the best boyfriend you could ever ask for
-He became very protective of you, making sure nothing harmed you or made you uncomfortableo
-He was a good cook, so he made you lots of dishes to show his love
-Since you were so shy, he made sure to include you
-Luz always teased him about you
-"Wow, Hunter, you actually have a girlfriend? I never thought that the golden loser would aally find someone willing to date him!"
-"Luz, shut up or I'll get the coven scouts to arrest the Owl Lady."
-You often had to step in to stop them from bickering
-"Luz, H-Hunter's a really good boyfriend! I'm very happy to date him!"
-Hunter would always blush when you say that, making Luz laugh and make fun of him more
-Despite that, you loved him very much <3

Alright, toh fans, this fandom has a big problem and I want to address it. Now, this problem is not only exclusive to this fandom but something happened which made me write this. Now, I want folks to read very carefully, and not jump to conclusions I know some lack serious reading comprehension and will do so anyways but anyways read on. The big problem in this fandom is the Philip Wittebane/Emperor Belos hate or rather the hate towards the people who enjoy this character. I’m turning 30 this year, I’ve participated in online fandom spaces since the mid-2000s and I honestly have no idea when this shift happened, since when did liking or writing about dark/problematic things meant you support it? When did people decide they no longer needed critical thinking skills? That said and now repeat after me:  LIKING A CHARACTER WHO DOES AND SAYS BAD THINGS DOES NOT MEAN YOU AGREE OR CONDONE SAID  BAD THINGS. I can’t help but feel too many people are projecting WAY too fucking hard, and I’m saying this as a traumatized ND person myself. You might ask, why do people like him? Well, he’s a well-designed and quite interesting character, there are many layers to him and it’s fun to analyze said layers. There is so much nuance the show likely isn’t going to touch upon in the final season and will merely hint at them because I can 100% guarantee if they did touch upon it, the fandom would rage that they “justify” and “excuse” his actions. Because you’re all saying this to folks who simply enjoy Philip, I legit have yet to meet anyone who likes his character who says “Oh, yeah no, he’s 100% right and justified to do what he does” We just enjoy Philip and how he is, there’s nothing wrong with that. And no, this is not me saying you can’t hate or dislike the character. You can, however, what you can’t and shouldn’t do is bully people that do like him. And you have gotten far too comfortable with doing that, hate him all you want, but leave those who enjoy him the fuck alone you soggy chicken nuggets. Edit: Because the no longer friend is no longer in my life because Magpie is a piece of human garbadge, I edited the post, but my point still stands.

(hunter x reader) Hunter taking care of a sick reader!
contains: fluff
-it all started when you didn’t show up to your missions for the emperor’s coven one day
-Hunter (in his golden guard attire) was definitely worried
-like my guy was overthinking
-”Steve, have you seen Y/N? You haven’t? Should we check up on them?”
-bro was basically to tears when the day ended because of all his worrying
-Hunter flew by to your house after all his missions were done, carrying some of your favorite food in a plastic bag
-he showed up at your window (like all the time) and knocked a few times
-you responded with a raspy “come in,”
-when he entered, my Titan he was scared for your damn life
-you’re bundled in a blanket like some zombie, nose leaking and eyes bloodshot with mushrooms growing on the crown of your hair
-”Y/N! Are you okay??? Do you need to be in the infirmary???”
-after a few minutes you managed to convince him you were just sick with the common mold
-and even that doesn’t calm him down
-”Do you want me to get a healer? Or I can make some food? Wait, don’t stand, I’ll get your medicine for you!”
-Flapjack kept you company in your bedroom whilst Hunter was down in the kitchen, busy making some soup
-And oh man, that boy is a great cook
-Plus seeing him grinning ear to ear, proudly puffing up his chest when you complimented him on his soup could almost make you better right on the spot
-Since it was his day off tomorrow, he insisted staying the night to take care of you
-took your temperature every few hours and brought you water when you were thirsty
-Darius covered for him, said Hunter was out on a late-night mission
-If Hunter wasn’t clingy before, he was definitely clingy now
-bro was basically stuck to your side like glue
-”Do you need a refill of tea? I can make a pot of it for the two of us, what’s your favorite tea flavor? Are you hungry? I can order takeout for dinner if you’re not full yet. Here, hold Flapjack, he can help lower blood pressure. Wait, isn’t that for cats? Whatever, Flap’s basically a cat anyway,”
-to get him to sit down you had to suggest you two watch a movie
-He fell asleep within the first five minutes
-All in all, he’s a great nurse <3

Can I request hunter x male reader where reader is in the place of Luz during the hunting palismen episode. Also hunter hit his head and was dazed so when he wakes up, he sees reader above him but thinks they're a cute angel
Okay, I absolutely adored this idea, so I went back to watch the episode and tried to ensure I got everything as close to canon as possible besides the swap out of the reader. for a little context, Reader has not gotten a palismen but knows some basic magic. Flapjack followed the reader home instead of Luz and the reader went back to return him to the nest that morning and got caught up in the stealing of the palismen. (Which I'm pretty sure yall assumed already, I just like specificity)

- by the time you’d risen from your crumpled state from the crash, you had just ducked away in the rubble fast enough to hear kikimora announce that the golden guard had passed away with the crash, and then watched as she sent the coven scouts away.
- than to your surprise the creature that you now assumed caused the wreck flew down to meet her, only gaining it praise. not taking the time to sit around and find out what would happen next, you started to walk to find an exit.
- though you quickly stumbled upon who you assumed to be the golden guard himself. checking his pulse, he seemed to be quite alive just unconscious. you sent a glance to flapjack who only chirped with approval as you bent down to try to wake the.. less than intimidating golden guard, who couldn’t be much older than you.. truthfully you were under the assumption he’d be a bit more than, an injured kid.
- he stirred as your hand tapped at his cheek, and his eyes fluttered, trying to get his surroundings, though you could practically see the confusion clouding his eyes.
- “am I.. dead?” he asked in a meek voice, this caught you severely off guard but eventually you mustered, “hardly, you’re definitely still among the living” and he didn’t take a second to consider this before he continued on “are you?.. an angel?” you paused, and couldn’t help but smile a little. “no. listen.” you moved to help him sit up and flapjack quickly jumped into his lap.   - he started to remember after a minute or two, and you offered him water while flapjack stared up at him, “look, kikimora sent that dragon to try to kill you, and we have to get out of here before it finds us.”  - you stood, offering your hand, which after a dazed and flushed look up at you, the golden guard quickly took, pulling himself up with a huff. “follow me, I know a town not far off from here.” he pulled you along by your hand, that he just so happened to forget to drop. “look, I don’t really know why lord below-” “belos.” the guard corrected as he continued his begrudged walk into town. you groaned, “belos, needs those palisman, but i’m gonna need them back” you stated firmly, lifting flapjack onto your shoulder.  - the guard laughed to himself looking back at you, “and what makes you think i’d help you do that?” and you released his hand, “uh, I don’t know, maybe because I just saved your life?!” your tone raised and you saw him flinch, which caused your demeanor to drop, though he seemed to genuinely consider this answer. sighing a bit to himself. “look, help me get back to a precinct so I can make sure kikimora doesn’t get to belos before I do, and I’ll..” he hesitated, but his voice lightened a bit, “i’ll see what I can do.”  - this stunned you to no end but you smiled, offering him your hand for a shake. “sounds like a deal.” he shook it and nodded. though as he pulled back and walked ahead, you stood there for a second watching him. “hey, do you have a name besides.. well, you know, ‘the golden guard’” you asked, not hesitating to distort the title a bit at the end of your sentence.  - he turned back towards you once again, and actually managed a smile (a thin and closed lip grin that couldn’t help but make a bit of blood flush to your cheeks) “Hunter.” he replied, “Well. It’s nice to meet you Hunter, i’m Y/N.”

“Hopefully I won’t wake up this time”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was listening to music as one does and then I was like “those lyrics remind me of a certainnn character” so I decided to draw it
So basically, Hunter intentionally threw the titans blood in the water KNOWING Belos would go for it, causing him to drown. (sorta sacrificing himself). Hunter knew he was going to die and attempted to lill himself to make sure Belos won’t live.
And the “I won’t wake up this time” is from the fact we already know that Hunter had had suicidal thoughts. We saw him basically attempt in s2e9. He didn’t view his life as important. As well as being in the emperors coven which was definitely mentally straining. So he hoped that this time he will finally be able to leave life.
I could rant more but that will end up with a several page essay about Hunter.

Eager to Learn - Hunter x Fem! Human! Reader (Part 1)
THANKS TO THEM SPOILERS
Hunter was struggling with too much in the Demon Realm. The image of Belos’ disgusting, deformed mutation, and his pale face standing out; it terrified him.
“Hunter, why are you hurting me? I only wanted to help you!”
He shuddered, remembering how his face immediately turned back into that of a monsters’. And that’s just what he is… a monster…
His mind trailed off again, remembering when he realized he was a Grimalker. His eyes teared slightly, and he looked around at everyone else still trying to gather themselves in Camila’s snug home. He realized Luz had gone off to the bathroom, and so he made his way towards her, the thought of being a Grimwalker still fresh in his mind.
After months, Hunter was thriving in the Human Realm. He had learned and picked up “human hobbies” that fascinated him; he even sewed his very own shirt! Rather than having the sigil of the Golden Guard on it, it had three of the same gorgeous animals he had fallen in love with: wolves. He was excited about his shirt, but it wasn’t done quite yet. And so he put together a very fashionable set of clothes for an outing today. Of course, he needed to hide his ears so he put a beanie over them.
Usually the Hexide Squad would wander around together, Luz leading the way and everyone following, learning the wonders of the enchanting human realm. Today, Hower, Hunter wasn’t in the mood to be around the others. He thought he had seen Belos and it tormented him to think that maybe he still existed. He thought Belos was dead after The Collector flicked him into a wall but, was he?
Hunter shivered slightly at the thought. He looked up from the sidewalk and to the shops to the left of him: A library! He had been doing research on Gravesfield and its history of witch hunting, hoping he could get some answers. Witch Hunter: Is that why Belos named him that? No, no, no. Not now. Don’t think, don’t think, you’ll be fine…
Hunter walked in and was flooded with the smell of paper and books. The library was rather empty. There was a walkway that led to a counter where a young girl stood. To the left of it were some shelves and tables, and to the right there were computers and more shelves.
“Oh hello there!” Hunter flinched back to the sound of the girl welcoming him, “Welcome to the Gravesfield Library!” Hunter made his way towards the counter.
“Uh, hi…” He said shyly, “Uh… nice place you got here.” He said, admiring the shelves full of books. He had always loved studying different things. He was fascinated by books and the immeasurable knowledge they held. But he could never share what he learned; he knew better than to admire wild magic. No, there’s nothing wrong with that. Just… him…
“Oh, thank you!” She chirped, “We try to keep it as comfortable and welcoming as we can. Say, I don’t recognize you, are you new here?” Hunter’s face flushed red: had he just been caught? What would she do? Should he run and hide? “Uhh- I- uh- yes!” He responded quickly, “I’m new and I’m staying with a friend. I just, uh, wanted to learn more about the town since it’s so, uh- full of history! And… intriguing?” She smiled at him.
“Oh sure! We have tons of history about Gravesfield. This old town goes back to the 1600s!” She explained.
“Huh, you don’t say.” He replied, crossing his arms. “It’s incredible the change that can go on in a few hundred years.”
“Sure is!” She replied. “Anyways, if you wanna find out more about Gravesfield, we have some books over there, in the History section” she said, pointing to her right. “Look for the books under ‘Gravesfield,’ they should have a blue tag on them.” Hunter looked to his left and saw what he was looking for.
“Oh, thank you- uhh..”
“(Y/N)! I’m (Y/N).” She said, and Hunter blushed lightly. He had never heard that name before. It sounded lovely.
“Oh, well. Nice to meet you, (Y/N). I’m Hunter.” He smiled softly at her. He could feel the tips of his pointed ears burning.
“Well, Hunter, if you need anything I’ll be right here.” She flashed a smile at him. “Oh, and welcome to Gravesfield by the way! I hope you like it here.” He smiled at her.
“Thank you! And yeah, I do like it here.”
Despite everything, Hunter felt at home in the human realm. How strange was it to feel at home somewhere he’d never been in? Is it a part of me that’s human and feels back at home? He froze. Was he the only Grimwalker to survive long enough to see the human realm? He felt his hands begin to shake and decided to look for his book.
After a while of looking, pulling out different books, and realizing that the dust on them meant nobody cared for these books, he found a few that interested him. They were about the old witch hunters of Gravesfield and the newer books were a revision of Gravesfield. (Y/N) had been right, there was a ton of history to learn.
He made his way back to the checkout counter. Was he excited to see (Y/N) again? He felt slightly nervous about approaching her.
As he went up to her, she looked up from her computer and smiled, “Oh wow! You weren’t joking when you said you wanted to find out more!” He smiled shyly at her. “Heh heh… Yeah. I guess you could say I’m quite the researcher.” She smiled at him.
“All right, well, since you’re new here I’m gonna assume you don’t have a library card. All you need to do is fill out this sheet and I’ll give you your own card in a minute! We have plenty of personalizable designs.” She pulled out a laminated sheet of paper with little examples of different designs. One caught his eyes: one with a wolf on it!
“Oh! Can I have that one?!” He asked excitedly, and (Y/N) giggled seeing his enthusiasm.
“You sure can. Here, I’ll load the card into the machine and you can give me the sheet back when you’re done.” She took the laminated sheet back and pulled out an empty plastic card from a bin on her desk. She walked towards a machine and Hunter got to work filling out his information.
It only asked for basic information like his name, age, contact information and address. He figured he’d put Camila’s information where he could, knowing he didn’t have the rest of the information the Human Realm required for humans.
“(Y/N)! I’m done!” He said happily, looking at his work. He was more excited about the library card then about actually reading the books at this point.
“Awesome!” I’ll be right back with your card!” She took his paper, input the information into the machine, and in a few minutes she had a library card just for him. “OK, this card is free, but a replacement will be five dollars, so be careful! You can check out as many books as you like but we have a limit of two weeks per check out. Just pop on by and renew them, and you’ll be good for another two weeks!” She explained to him. Hunter smiled sheepishly as she handed him his card.
“Thank you!” He was so excited to get his card he almost forgot why he had gone to the library in the first place. “So uh, is this it?” He asked.
“Oh, I need to scan your card and then your books,” she explained. Hunter handed her his card and stack of books, and one by one, she scanned everything.
“All right! You’re good to go!” She said happily, giving him his things, “I hope to see you again soon,” She smiled at him, and he smiled back.
“Yeah, I’d like to see you again.” He blushed lightly. Had he made his first friend in the Human Realm?
“Oh wait!” She exclaimed, pulling out another sheet of paper, “We’re having something here in Gravesfield soon!” She handed him a poster of what looked like a carnival.
“Oh, uh, what is it?” He asked her, taking the poster and examining it.
“We’ll be having a Halloween Festival in a few weeks. There will be all sorts of activities and fun stuff. I’ll be there with a little booth full of more books about Gravesfield. I’d be happy to see you there.” Hunter blushed and almost squeaked, she wanted to see him again!
“Oh, of course! You can count on me!” She flashed a smile at him as a light blush grew across her (s/c) face.
“Awesome! I’ll see you there!” And with that, Hunter was on his way back to Camila’s. He was too excited about seeing (Y/N) at the carnival to even care for all the books he was lugging. It’ll be ok! I can spend some time with her there and then… Then what? Hunter wasn’t sure about what he’d do, but he knew he wanted to see her again.
Weeks had passed and it was the evening of the carnival. Everyone had been surprised to find out Hunter knew about it before they did. The group was excited to tell Luz about the chance that there was Titan Blood, and that they could all go back to the Demon Realm.
Hunter had finished his shirt, and he wore it under his costume. He had taken extra care in his detail, wondering if (Y/N) would like it. Everyone was wearing a sort of costume, and they hoped no one would suspect they weren’t human.
As Hunter walked around, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Belos might be… there. He tried to drown it with the hope of seeing (Y/N) again. He looked around carefully hoping to catch her form, and almost jumped with joy when he finally found her.
He ran up to the booth, his smile ear to ear and his face blushing madly. He felt like he hadn’t seen her in forever when in reality he had visited the library as much as he could.
“(Y/N)!” He called out, and she quickly faced him, a smile on her face just as big as his.
“Hunter! Hi!” She waved as he approached her. “How are you? Are you having fun?” He smiled shyly as he got closer. He wasn’t expecting it but (Y/N) leaned over the booth and gave him a hug. His face turned to a dark red and he froze, not knowing what to do. He couldn’t think of the last time someone hugged him. He finally embraced her too, and a strange feeling of comfort washed over him, with something else. It almost felt like the satisfaction of completing a puzzle of chugging down water after waking up from an unexpectedly long nap. He had no idea what to compare it to, he just felt like… he had been giving something he had been starved from…
She finally pulled away after a good squeeze, “I’m so happy you came! I’ve been looking for you since we set up the booth!” Hunter blushed, she was holding his hands in hers. She was so cheerful and comforting. He wanted to rest in her arms and feel her embrace again.
“Wait- really? You’ve been waiting for me?” He blushed and felt his heart race. No one had made him feel like this. No one had ever made him feel this good.
“Mhm,” she hummed, nodding, “Hey, do you mind if I come with you? I don’t think Ms. Oscar minds if I go.” He smiled and a woman behind (Y/N) smiled and waved dismissively.
“I’d love it if you came with me! You can show me around!” She smiled happily at him. Together, they walked away from the booth and towards the fun.
“I love your costume by the way! Your ears look so real!” He blushed nervously. That’s because they are… Would she still love them if she knew?
They spent a while together looking at different things, playing games at booths and talking together. Hunter didn’t remember the last time he had felt this good. Maybe when Luz had accepted him as family…
Finally, they approached the others by the hayride, and everyone got in. She quickly learned that these were his friends.
On the ride, they learned about the story of the Wittebane Brothers. (Y/N) however, was familiar with these stories. She had studied just about as much as Hunter did.
Hunter and his friends were noticeably uncomfortable. She could tell there was some strange tension between all of them. Maybe they didn’t like the tale of the brothers, or maybe it really had scared them.
As soon as the ride was over, Hunter got off with someone dressed as Azura and the two suddenly disappeared. (Y/N) figured something was wrong and decided it was best to give him space, so she stuck with his friends who happily let her stay by.
After a couple of minutes, everyone began to awkwardly shift around.  It seemed like they all had a feeling something was wrong. Apparently, it wasn’t like Luz and Hunter to just disappear.
The girl with an orange wig spoke first, “Luz? Hunter?”
(Y/N) suddenly realized how long it had been since they disappeared.
Suddenly, a woman and another girl who seemed to be of (Y/N)’s age appeared.
“Kid!” The woman shouted, “Has anyone seen Luz?” she asked worriedly. “And has she um…” She hesitated for a moment, “said anything… weird?”
“Boom!” The girl exclaimed, “Find A Phone!” She pulled out a phone and on the screen appeared what seemed to be Luz’s location, and so the group began to move out.
(Y/N) stuck with them as they made their way into the forest and closer to the Old Graveyard.  She hoped the two were all right, or that they were trying to prank them.
As the group got closer to Luz’s location, they began shouting for them.
“Luz?! I think she’s this way!” Amity exclaimed, and soon everyone else began calling out.
“Mija?!”
“Luz!”
“Hunter!”
“Guys?! Where are you?!”
“Hunter!” (Y/N) shouted out as loudly as she could, wishing she would find him.
She didn’t know what else to do other than hope Hunter was all right. She walked with them until she could make out their shapes, but… something was wrong…
She then realized there were flashes of colors and shapes, and… there was a strange new detail on Hunter. He didn’t have horns on his costume… The group then ran forwards and she could see what was wrong: Luz and Hunter were fighting, and his skin and eyes had changed color. She froze, not knowing what to do, trying to figure out what was wrong.
“Is that- Hunter?” Camila asked. She stared, wide-eyed, trying to figure out what was going on.
“Something’s wrong-” Gus stared intently at the two across the ice bridge.
What’s going on- is this some sort of prank? (Y/N) tried to think, but she didn’t know what to do. She felt panic start to burn in her veins, is Hunter ok??
Hunter looked at the group, and then at Luz, a grim smile on his face, “See, this is why you’re so useful, Luz,” he said, yet it sounded like another voice was echoing his words. “You’re so desperate to help people, you even helped me meet The Collector.”
“What-” Amity froze, and the group shuffled awkwardly again, exchanging frightened looks.
That is NOT Hunter’s voice… (Y/N) began to tremble. She didn’t understand what was happening.
Luz began to panic, “I-I didn’t mean to-” she held her arms out in distress, “I-I thought I was doing something good!” Her voice was breaking and her fear began to leak.
“But… you DID do something good!” (Y/N) didn’t know what to think anymore, it looked like Hunter but it wasn’t his voice, “I thought this one was a lost cause” the voice said, retracting what looked like claws into normal hands, and he stared at them almost admiringly.
“Because of you,” He said arrogantly, “We can finish our work as witch hunters- starting with THEM!”
A claw came hurling towards them, and Amity suddenly pulled out a staff and deflected the hit. Willow and Gus followed, pulling out their own staffs, and suddenly, they flew off and began to circle ‘Hunter’.
(Y/N) was trembling. She didn’t know what was happening, she didn’t understand what was going on. All she could do was stare in absolute horror. H-Hunter??
The fight was a wild frenzy. There were suddenly several of Gus, and ‘Hunter’ extended his arm, and hit one, deflecting a cloud of purple right after.
“Ha!” He exclaimed triumphantly.
Gus then circled ‘Hunter’, “Hey Belos, remember me?” he asked  mockingly. He grimaced and aimed at Gus, but Willow caught his arm and dragged it down.
“Hang tight, Hunter!” Vee called out. She inhaled and, suddenly, wisps of blue were coming to her.
‘Hunter’ cried and pulled back ferociously, and then aimed at Vee with his other arm.
“Vee! Watch out!” Amity shouted, swiftly grabbing her and pulling her away in time just as the claw crushed the bridge.
(Y/N) watched in horror as everything unfolded. She didn’t understand or have the slightest clue on why or how any of this was happening.
‘Hunter’ hit Gus, Willow and Amity, sending them crashing into the ground. (Y/N) jumped back and yelped. She looked up to see that Luz had a staff too now, and she was holding it around ‘Hunter’.
“I know you can hear me, Hunter!” She cried out, “Fight! Him! Off!” He threw her over his shoulder and she screamed, flying in the air. Amity then swiftly twisted her staff around, and a circle of purple light appeared: she was summoning plants. They grew towards Luz and brought the broken bridge back together, catching her safely as she fell.
The staff Luz had been using shrunk, and turned into a cardinal. It flew up the ‘Hunter’s head and began desperately chirping and flapping.
“That’s right,” He muttered, catching the little bird, “you wouldn’t  want me hurting your precious palisman- would you?” The bird chirped and cried in fear, “Oh, but again- I don’t care what you want” he said, a grim smile creeping onto his face.
“Goodbye, Evelyn,” he crushed the bird in his claws, the ends of them going completely through the red cardinal. Everyone gasped in horror, watching as green wisps bled out of him.
“NO!” (Y/N) screamed.
One of ‘Hunter’s’ hand reached out towards the bird, when suddenly it grabbed the wrist instead, and released the bird. He began shaking violently, as if trying to control himself.
“Flapjack!” Luz cried out in agony, tears in her eyes, “Flapjack… you’ll be ok…” She tried to reassure the little bird fighting for its life.
Hunter grunted, his arms moving hastily, and he stumbled closer and closer to the water. He punched himself and fell, panting madly.
“You know what I’d like, Belos?” He stood back up, grabbing his arm, walking closer to the water, “I’d like to leave the Emperor’s Coven, and never step foot in that throne room again! I’d like to study wild magic, and learn to carve palismen!” He stepped closer and closer to the edge, “I’d like to attend Hexside as a regular student, and play Flyer Derby with my friends!” He grabbed a small vial with a thick, blue liquid in it, “But most of all, I’d like to make sure, you never hurt anyone AGAIN!" He threw the vile into the water, and suddenly the same echo-like voice returned.
“NO!” It screamed, throwing itself into the water.
“HUNTER!” (Y/N) cried out desperately. Tears were in her eyes, she didn’t know what to do, she was frozen in fear and confusion.
“Oh no, no!” Luz cried out in panic.
Suddenly Camila rushed forwards, “MOVE!” She hurled herself into the water, and quickly came back up with Hunter. He had passed out and laid limp in her arms. She swam towards the bridge and laid him on it.
“Be careful with him!” Willow pleaded as they all surrounded him.
Hunter shook and finally screamed, a green slime flying out of his body, landing several feet away from them. It all came together to form a monster, several feet tall with horns, and a thin, disgusting frame.
(Y/N) was too scared to process it all, she blanked out on what was going on, losing herself in thought trying to find an explanation for all of it. The next thing she knew, the monster was walking through some type of portal, and it disappeared through it.
A moment of silence filled the air, “THAT’S THE BELOS YOU’VE BEEN FIGHTING THE WHOLE TIME?!” Camila exclaimed, horrified.
“Guys! Hunter isn’t moving!” Willow’s voice broke slightly as she spoke, and everyone gathered around him.
(Y/N) held his hand; she didn’t know what else to do. Tears pricked her eyes and shook violently.
“Vee! Call an ambulance!”
“Do human doctors know about possession?”
“Or grimwalkers?!”
(Y/N) looked around frantically, “Wait, what?! Possession? GRIMWALKERS?!”
The group ignored her, all of them desperately throwing out possible solutions and frantic cries.
The little cardinal crept forward, nuzzling Hunter’s lifeless form. It rested on his chest, closing his eyes as a bright light grew from under him. Everyone hushed as a slight glistening sound rang the air, little orbs of light floating up as the bird disappeared.
When he had evaporated into nothing but little specks of light, Hunter groaned and finally moved again. “H-hey guys. Is everyone else ok?” Hunter croaked softly, “Is (Y/N) ok?”
Gus was the first to speak, “Actually, Flapjack-”
“Don’t-” Hunter cut him off, tears streaming down his face “I-I already know” He trembled, gripping his shirt where Flapjack had laid.
“Sit up slowly, baby,” Camila soothed, “are you in pain anywhere?”
(Y/N) gently held his hand and helped him sit up, “I’m ok,” he said in almost a whisper.
(Y/N) ignored everything else for a moment, “Hunter, what just happened? HOW did any of this happen? Are you sure you’re alright? WHO WAS THAT?!”
He just smiled softly at her, “I’ll explain, but, yeah, I’m fine.” Suddenly, she turned around, realizing Camila was saying something about going to the Demon Realm. Hunter and the others made their way towards her. (Y/N) froze, were the stories she had read true? Was there really another world full of magic out there? Suddenly, the portal began to flicker out, “The portal’s closing,” Vee said worriedly.
Luz looked forward, “Then we better head in.”
Hunter began to make his way towards the portal, and (Y/N) felt her heart sink. Hunter stifled a cry and trembled, putting his hand over his chest, “Time to go home, Flap”.
Just as he began to step through, (Y/N) shouted, “HUNTER! WAIT!” She ran to him, grabbing his hand and pulling him away from the portal.
“Wha- (Y/N)?” He stared at her, wide eyed, “(Y/N), I-” before he could continue, she burst out.
“Hunter, wait-” she looked from him, to the portal, and back to him, “Look I don’t know what’s happening or what you’re getting yourself into. There’s no way I’m just gonna let you wander through this by yourself when that… thing just went through.”
Hunter blushed lightly and his gaze softened, “(Y/N), that’s really sweet of you but, you belong here. I’m… I’m not a human,” He said, turning away.
As the two kept talking, Willow, Gus, and Amity all made their way through the portal.
“Hunter, that doesn’t change anything!” She said, smiling at him. His ears perked up. They are real!!
He turned to her again, “What? Really?” He asked, a deep blush coming across his face. Tears almost formed in his eyes.
“Of course this doesn’t change anything!” She said smiling as she took his other hand into her’s. “Look, no matter what this is, what challenge you’re facing or what danger you’re going up against, I want to be here with you the whole way through it!”
Hunter laughed lightly, “(Y/N)! That’s so sweet of you.” He smiled, tears streaming down his face.
“C’mere you!” She exclaimed, pulling him into a tight hug. Hunter hugged her back, almost sobbing into her shoulder. No one had ever made him feel like this. He wanted to feel like this forever.
As (Y/N) pulled away, she suddenly saw Vee shape-shift into Camila. Camila said something to her, and she shifted back as she was pulled into a hug. When Camila let go, (Y/N) jumped towards Vee.
“Hey, Vee!” She looked towards (Y/N) and blushed in fear.
“Oh! (Y/N), I- uh…”
“Can you do that for me too, please? Tell Ms. Oscar I had a family emergency but will try to be back soon!” Vee smiled at her.
“Sure thing, (Y/N)!”
(Y/N) turned towards Hunter and held out her hand. “Let’s go through, together.” He smiled, blushing again as he took her hand. Together, they walked through the portal and into the Demon Realm.
