--- The tension between them was always at its peak, whether it was business...professional...or sexual. Pacing in the alleyway had the kitsune's eyes rolling in annoyance as she listened to the detective rattle off a handful of questions about some missing mortal. ' Yeah, yeah...you act like I did something wrong here, the damn idiot was just fine when he left. And he did leave, detective. ' she all but sneered the last sentence, whirling on a heel to glare at him.

--- This? This was not one of those times where their banter was playful and fun. At least, it certainly didn't feel that way. Fangs were bared in irritation as he stepped closer, invading her space and lowering his voice into something quiet and personal; it didn't escape her, the way his fingers were resting on the grip of the pistol he always carried. Did she seem threatening right now? She must have, for him to be so on guard.

--- ' If this is some kind of interrogation, I feel like I'm entitled to a lawyer or so-- ' she began, bristling, but words were short lived and promptly silenced the moment her fingers curled around her throat. It wasn't overly harsh, though the air of authority he presented with the gesture was apparent, staring down at her with narrowed gaze and a small squeeze. Thumb flicked along pale column, absently tracing over her pulse...up to the point of her chin where he applied pressure to tip her features up.

--- Another low sound, though she wasn't sure if it was a growl or a moan, offering him a sly grin. ' Why detective...if you wanted to find out my kinks, you could have just asked...you can squeeze a little tighter if you want... ' she all but purred, but the words are only to mask the lightning quickly flash of a blade, moonlight hitting it as it slipped from her hair and into her palm. It was the only sign of it being pulled as she held it to his throat; fair's fair, right? ' But two can play at that game... '

--- Though...instead of aggression, he leaned forward- against the blade, until sharpened edge bit into tender and pale flesh, marking a sweet crimson line into his skin where rubies flowed freely down his own neck. Something he didn't seemed to mind, all in the name and placing a kiss along the underside of her jaw and chin- punctuated at the end by a sharp bite and a chuckle. ' Thanks for the information. If you see him again...I'm looking for him. Keep him here. Call me. ' And with that...? He was gone, leaving her breathless and staring at the crimson stained knife he left behind in her palm, dragging her tongue over the blade as she stared after him.

i know it’s like years old at this point but i love that one collab mumbo and grian did with tommyinnit bc it’s like the single most concentrated example i’ve seen of mumbo’s Chaos Nullification Powers

you get to see a bit of it on hermitcraft, mostly via his interactions with grian, but until seeing that collab it didn’t really hit me just how completely mumbo can no-sell other people’s attempts to control a situation. tommyinnit is possibly the single shoutiest, most chaotic minecraft youtuber out there, and in most videos i’ve seen he pretty much overwhelms everyone else and sets the tone for interactions because of this. but mumbo just. doesn’t let him. no matter how much tommy escalates in intensity, mumbo reacts with *exactly* the same energy he always does. grian largely comes across in the whole video as annoyed and reluctant to engage with the whole thing, but mumbo’s not even affected. he just rolls with anything he finds funny and basically ignores anything he disapproves of, only seeming more and more unflappable the harder anyone tries to get a rise out of him.

AND imo, this is the key to my favorite interpretation of him as a character

see, when the people around him are being more reasonable/calm, i think mumbo often comes across as anxious and a bit easily overwhelmed. the thing is, his nervous wet cat vibes do not scale. he has one setting. his responses to the last life ‘ah-ha!’ jokes and to hermitcraft 8 starting to crumble to pieces under a falling moon are almost identical.

mumbo jumbo is inexorably and eternally Just Some Guy, but that gets stranger and stranger the weirder his surroundings become. the giggly incredulousness that makes him an easy target for goofy puns looks Very different when it’s also his reaction to the impending end of the world.

#anyway yeah i have this whole idea in my head about mumbo’s friendship with grian from a characterization standpoint #bc i agree with the somewhat? common consensus that being friends with mumbo has made grian softer and friendlier over time #but i don’t think it was in a ‘reflecting back the kindness he’s being shown’ way #i think it’s because the more harsh and chaotic you try to be towards mumbo the more you feel ineffectual and out of control #and grian can’t handle it so he slowly becomes nicer until he feels like they’re on equal footing again #like don’t get me wrong i think they genuinely are good friends #and i don’t think this is necessarily something mumbo is doing on purpose #but i think the power dynamic going on under the surface is much more bizarre and weighted in mumbo’s favor than it seems at first glance #mumbling

in internet posts it is easy to cut them out of your life. they are hurting you! they aren't listening to you!

they held your hair back. they lent you lipstick. they held your hand at the train station and got you home safe. they rounded on your bully, got loud, said get fucked, spitting-mad in your defense.

they also cut the hair off again. told you that you should really think twice before wearing something like that. took you for granted. took your insecurities and threw them in your face again.

you know logically it should be easy. all the internet advice comments always read it will feel better. like an equation - if a person is rotten, you just remove them. you pull the tooth that's hurting.

but it was never a big flare-up moment. you don't live in a sitcom. they never tried to take your boyfriend or steal from your apartment. they showed up to birthdays and they wrote songs about you and bring you water without you asking. once you found out they carry an emergency inhaler for you, even though you haven't had an asthma attack in years - just in case.

where is the line? people fuck up. sometimes they fuck up badly. sometimes people have raw personalities, like a powerline, and being around them is dangerous. addicting. sometimes they can't help themselves, but you know they're trying. sometimes they are just rough-around-the-edges. sometimes they don't even realize how they sounded when they said that. sometimes it's just - you've both loved each other for so long now, the way this thing hurts goes back to the root.

and that's the fucked up part. you have pushed your fingers against the sweetheart of memory. things these days are electric, tense, harrowing. they didn't used to be. there were a lot of good days in there. sometimes you want to just close your eyes and say can this be over yet? do we still need to be fighting?

doing that would give up any chance you get of getting an apology, but you don't always know that you need an apology, you love them. once they flaked on your birthday party. once they told you to get over it, people are always dying. they also let you crash on their couch for a week after the breakup, handfeeding you when you were so sad you couldn't eat. they are also judgmental about everything, occasionally react to banal statements with an attitude that is weird and fiery. they also love you like a lighthouse sometimes, so strong they cut the storm like lightning.

but the problem is that you might be storm. you might be the thing that needs breaking. what if you are two forces who are desperately, horribly drawn to each other, shaped by the other person's passions, and both good for each other and bad in equal measure.

what if you're both just people, and you're no saint neither.

just cut them off! swallowing the saltwater, you catch yourself in the mirror. you've been shaking more than usual. there's an ache in you that is oblique, loud, impossible to soothe. is this what it looks like? when life is "easier"?

your mouth will always have a hole, is the thing, if you remove the tooth.

Come watch dungeon meshi we have a (seemingly) typical white autistic man who doesn't understand social norms, an autistic man of colour who overcompensates for social deficits by being too good at social norms (while still struggling socially), and we even have the "grew up autistic but also Asian so I have a very good understanding of cultural and social norms but I still struggle socially" variety of autistic man.
