New year, new meme! Here is last years post: https://www.tumblr.com/orphancookie69/673177934574518272/dolly-parton-memechallenge. Let’s see what this years meme looks like...
So, some of you may notice my professional photo from my recent post. This was actually my favorite shot but it was better as an OG shot-not cropped out. That is for the LinkedIn section, which really is a free account to have and great whether you are looking for a job or having your business/business self on there.
Facebook, in reality I try to keep my facebook photo cute but professional as that is seen by not just my FB friends, but by people who find me on the marketplace when I post lease listings up. Do I miss the days when it was more fun and not a hybrid of fun family friends and work? Kind of, but some things like the marketplace are invaluable-have you seen what has happened to Craigslist? But its of me and my boy, I love that damn cat. Why is this appropriate? Pets can be a universal reflection of ourselves.
Instagram, I don’t normally wear makeup but I loved making that photo happen. We were in Las Vegas and there was a proper vanity where I could sit, with proper lighting, and scatter all my stuff around. Definitely need that in every home in America. Anyways, when I travel-I bring minimal makeup. My partner thinks that I looked like a harlot with that-and really, I could look way more like a harlot. So I thought, why not the minimal vegas harlot look for IG?
Tinder. Now this one is usually my favorite as I live vicariously through this meme. I have a partner, and I do not cheat. Hell, even when I was single-I don’t think I was on Tinder. I always thought it was a hookup app. But aren’t all of them? Anyways, this cute brea heart photo seemed perfect for that corner. You can feel the love in that photo, right?
Get You A Woman That Does It All, do you have such a woman? If you don’t, go get yourself one! Really though, it’s funny in the fact that even though I grew up on old country music-I don’t really like Dolly. Shes a woman that does it all, but I feel like women everywhere feel like they have to be superwoman or they are not woman at all. In life, do what you can-and that is enough for you and eventually the right person. While I stick to the original meme as I honor it each year, feel free to change it up to man or even person. As long as you are recognizing the superhero you are-it doesn’t matter if you are male or female! Be a super-human!

Sailor-Aviator's Playlist Writing Challenge
Hello, hello!! Welcome back to another writing challenge! This one also had a lot of votes in the poll I posted, so I figured why not go ahead and release it?
The Concept
I have what some might call an eclectic music taste. What does that mean? I like a bit of just about everything! So, I compiled a list of songs from my playlists that I thought might make good fanfic inspiration! As with my Christmas Challenge, there will be a limited number of spots for each song! Just send me a DM/ask telling me which song you'd like to choose and for which Top Gun character you'd like to write for!
The Rules
You may sign up for more than one slot as long as there are slots available. However, you can not take up two slots for the same song.
Tag your fics appropriately! (Angst, smut, fluff, warnings, etc.)
18+ ONLY!
This can be a series, a one-shot, moodboards, or even a collection of drabbles! Just have fun with it!
You MUST use your song in some way in the fic. For example, if your song is Two Doors Down by Dolly Parton, then you could write about going to a party or about being a Dagger's neighbor.

The photo I took right after the surgery. I am also grateful to my ophthalmologist, who is great about explaining everything (and being succinct) and has a great sense of humor. Actually, after the surgery he came by and we started talking about his playlist during surgery (country western). We both agreed about some of the old great and I suggested he listen to Trio (Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt). They cut 2 albums together, both superb, and the first one is one of hte most beautiful collections of music I've ever heard. The video below, from a live performance on The Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson, features 3 songs performed by them. A fucking treasure.

Then he went on (and on) about David Allen Coe's The Ride. When he started trying to perform the damned song, I wound up laughing while I told him to "Get out! Get out!" Maybe not the best move, since he is going to operate on my left eye on the 21st of December...

All of this to say my eyesight is really good. I can see, as my cousin who has had cataract surgery told me, "in Technicolor." I am fortunate that my ophthalmologist recommended I just have the basic lens inserted, since my eyesight is still pretty good.
It has been a weird challenge, though not unsurmountable, since I spent a lot of time sleeping but am getting a sense of me again. Grateful I can work from home and my bosses are understanding and put up with my shit.
Also am grateful for my 2 sisters (one of my sisters and her best friend, who has been part of the family for decades) who came out to be with me for a few days. They drove me nuts, but then I would expect (or want) no less. But we had a nice drive to SF and the Golden Gate Bridge and had some great meals and watched old movies. They went by themselves to the Sacramento Railroad Museum (one of my favorite museums) and to the outlet stores close by. And they bugged the shit outta me, for which I love them.
So, all's cool in the pool.

Oh, you shouldn't support me on this, they are way too many thoughts and I don't even know if I can put them into words; but I guess this is that post now. Thank you for showing interest, and sorry in advance lmao.
Listen, Springsteen is the fucking epitome of butchnes, and funnily enough, he is so in a queer way. None of this is me claiming Springsteen is queer at all, but his presentation of masculinity is something very intentional, and it comes from a need to subvert the kind of masculinity he grew up around. It's quite literally a performance, his stage persona, and it's simultaneously a homage and a challenge to the idea of salt-of-the-earth, alpha manliness that he could never really achieve in real life.
As I've seen a post on tumblr say once, he's queer in much the same way that Dolly Parton is queer- as in, they aren't, but the gays still see themselves on them. Both are camp, in the sense that both are very intentionally playing the part of their gender to an almost artificial level; something queer people know all too well.
Because being butch for a cis man is usually just conforming to masculinity, it's about being cool and big and strong and all muscles; but being butch to anyone else is a sort of challenge. It's about proving yourself, while at the same time subverting the notions of gender and, especially, of masculinity, and turning it into something uniquely yours. In this sense, Springsteen talks about his stage persona as this one-dimensional shell of coolness that hides the complexities of being a man; of being kind and sensitive and of loving those around you openly and loudly.
In a way, his masculinity is a mix of everything his father was and everything he wished his father had been; of all the ways their identities clashed while he was looking for his own self. If he makes sure to look incredibly masculine on stage while he sings about the problems of America, the harshness of capitalism, about love and fear and beauty; if he's really butch while Clarence Clemons holds him in his arms and kisses him on the lips; it's at least a little bit about challenging his father. A man who forcibly shaved his long hair while he was immobilized because his son was looking too feminine.
And Springsteen's presentation of masculinity has other layers, not the least of which being the fact that it's a very blue collar, working class type of masculinity. His leather jackets and blue jeans and white t-shirts became a staple of the cool guy look, sure; but they came from growing up at a factory town, from being raised by a working man with the ideals of the 1950's and a very strict idea of what Being a Man means. Because life is tough, and to be a man you need to be tougher.
But there's also the context in which he started making his art. He was a kid, and he had a band, and he quickly found out that the places where that was seen as a good thing were the ones filled with other outcasts. So he made a career of singing at coastal bars and in gay clubs and of writing about those different lives, and eventually he found the E Street Band and met Clarence who "opened up the doors of soul for a poor white guy", and so both blackness and queerness influenced his very specific, and still very universally recognizable, version of masculinity. It's all intentional, and it's all much more complex than it might seem at first glance.
Anyways, sorry for ranting, I just have a lot of feelings about Bruce Springsteen and about masculinity as a performance.

The goal behind this year-long opt-in challenge is to post a drabble every week. To be actively writing, and actively posting, all year.
To that end we've built a list of prompts for each week in 2024 —plus a handful of alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any week (or used as prompts for bonus drabbles, because MOAR drabbles is always good!) The prompts include images, songs, random words or phrases, tropes, and in April, for poetry month - poems.
If the prompt is in double quotes, the prompt must appear in the drabble, otherwise it's meant as inspiration. During April you can choose to write a poem of the type specified as your prompt, or write *about* that type of poem. For song prompts, pick out a lyric if you like, or be inspired by the vibe of the song. Whatever works!
Also included is a list of lengths - you may choose any length from the list to pair with any of the weekly prompts.
