[image description: A black pony with large rust-brown eyes and a smiling pumpkin on her hip stands on golden and orange fall leaves. Behind her, the dark sky is filled with stars and her flaming orange mane shines brightly against the blues of night. Text reads “24, The Small God, Pumpkin Spice”]

People assume she’s a newcomer, a fad, a frivolous flash in the pan.  But she was there when the first pumpkin pies were being baked; she was there when the first colonist cookbook was published, in 1769.  She was there when the British raided the rest of the world for flavors they could steal, and while her appearance may be sweet and adorable, her hooves are soaked in the blood of empire, for without conquest, she could never have been born.
But people, unwilling to consider the structure beneath the surface, look at her and see only big eyes, a flowing mane, a coat as soft as silk and as dark as midnight, and they mock her adherents, call them “basic” as if anything could be considered truly basic when it had been built through so many crimes.
Every piece of her was stolen.  Every pinch and particle was the subject of a terrible war.  The price of cinnamon is slaughter.  The fee for nutmeg is subjugation.  And now we serve her sacraments with whipped cream and sugar sprinkles, as if both those things had not also been stolen at some point, as if a foamy cloud could somehow clean the blood from those long lashes.
In these modern days, her most common manifestation is blended with sweet cream and coffee—a drink that has many gods of its own, that has sparked even more wars than her cinnamon pungency.  But for most of her time, she has been carried in the pie.
Pumpkin pie.  The ultimate jewel in the crown of colonialism.  Cooking techniques from Europe, spices stolen from India, Asia, and the Middle East, and a vegetable crown taken from the Americas, sliced and mashed and mixed until its wildness is lost, subsumed into custardy blandness, become one with the melting pot.
She’s not a newcomer.  And she’s not nice, either, and so few of those who worship her understand, anymore, that she’s not a god of whimsy or basic delights.
She is, now and always, a god of war.

Today was Thanksgiving, and you were invited to have dinner with your girlfriend's family. Currently, you her flying next to her, traveling to their house. Mary was panicking due to it being your first time meeting them.
Mary: Darla will try to attack you with hugs. Freddy likes to spout out random facts. Eugene might ignore you and play his video games. You'll have to be aware of Billy. He's a bit over over protective of the family.
You kissed her on the cheek and reassured her that,
Y/n: Mary, if there anything like you, then I'm sure their lovely.
She smiled at you before landing outside of the house, letting you down and saying, "Shazam!" A lightning bolt then hit her suit, and after a bright flash, she was in her normal clothes.
As soon as you walked into the house, her family begins to surround you, introducing themselves. As Mary predicted, Darla ran and gave you both a hug.
Suddenly, the fire detector goes off, and smoke comes out from the kitchen.
Darla: Oh no! The tofo-turkey!
She runs to the kitchen with Victor following her after telling you,
Victor: Don't worry, we also have real turkey.
Later, you were in the kitchen helping set the table while Freddie was holding the plates and asking,
Freddie: Did you know that the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade featured Central Park Zoo animals instead of giant floats.
Before you could reply, your attention turned to a loud thud outside. Through the back door, you could see the hero known as SHAZAM in the backyard holding a pie.
SHAZAM: Sorry I'm late. I had to beat an old lady with a stick for this.
Y/n: Billy?
Billy: Oh hey, Y/n. Shazam!
A lighting bolt strikes him, turning him back into a child. He then enters the house and sets the pie on the table.
Mary: You two know eachother?
Y/n: We teamed up to defeat Teth Adam a few times.
Darla and Vicitor came out of the kitchen. Each was bringing their own turkey to the table. After everyone had sat down at the table, Mary placed her hand in the center of the table.
Mary: All hands on deck.
A few hours after dinner, you said your goodbyes before flying back home.
Y/n: It was nice to meet your family. Is there any chance I can come back for Christmas?
She chuckled and kissed you before saying,
Mary: I think so, it seems they loved you as much as I do.

Thanking and Praising Without Competing
We live in a competitive environment. The message the world sends that’s hard to ignore is that we need to do things better and faster, and finish them sooner, than others. There’s nothing wrong with being productive, as long as we have the right motivation. We accomplish more being motivated by a thankful heart than we ever could by any carrot-and-stick external enticement.
Our motives matter. We can feel pressured to perform when we compare ourselves to others and try to compete with them. There are plenty of people who commend themselves. However, Paul warned the believers at Corinth that it wasn’t wise to measure or compare themselves with themselves. (2 Cor 10:12)
What we expose ourselves to influences how we think, and how we think determines how we feel. This is part of the anatomy of life, and it applies to our motives. Exposing ourselves to the Word of grace moves us into thankfulness for all God has done for us. There’s great power in choosing to give thanks always, in Jesus’ name (Eph 5:20); God’s will is for us to give thanks in the midst of everything we go through.
It’s important to make a distinction here; we don’t give thanks for the bad things, but in the midst of them. Specifically, we can be grateful for God’s faithfulness in delivering us from the messes we create for ourselves, for His undying love for us, and for His mercy in sparing us from what we deserve when we fall short. We can praise the Lord and give thanks to Him because He’s good and His mercy endures forever (Psalm 106:1). We can’t say that about anyone else in our lives.
Pushing ourselves too hard to accomplish a task through self-effort can lead to frustration and burnout. Instead of going down that path, we can base our motives on the success God has already made available to us. Meditating on this generates a grateful heart in us and makes us more successful than we could ever be on our own.

i think something very important that people kinda forget is like. there is never any mention of percy actually Liking nico. there’s never affection just obligation and guilt. nico is a kid he just wishes he could stop worrying about. they ARE besties tho do not get this twisted sometimes a pair of besties is two people unwillingly handcuffed together by fate desperately trying (and failing) to make their situation better
