No, no, no, no, no. Shit. Fuck. Goddammit.

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Patrick was meant to do a simple recon. In, out, done. He nearly achieves that, leaving the Bennet compound in under an hour. For unknown reasons, he changes course at the last minute to go back inside. That decision cost him dearly when he seemingly sets off a sensor, triggering a blast that throws him across the property.

Christ, David’s not even supposed to fucking be here. He should be on another continent, deluding diamond smugglers into believing he’s trustworthy. But, it was a 19-hour difference between seeing Patrick or having to wait another two months. To David there was no other choice. Now that he’s here, watching a barely conscious Agent Brewer, he knows he made the correct decision.

Blood is oozing, slow and syrupy, from Patrick’s thigh. David can see some surface level scratches on his face. Honestly he’s a lot more concerned with what isn’t visible. Patrick is on his side against the cobblestone pathway, wincing and attempting to curl forward so he can put pressure on his leg. David’s stomach turns with every wounded noise Patrick makes. He’s heard that mouth moan, hum and spew a litany of filthy words and phrases but always in moments of pleasure. David’s never heard him like this.

David’s fully aware how much is at stake if he exposes himself to help, someone could show up for Agent Brewer any moment. Still, the pull is so, so overwhelming. He feels like he’s going to vibrate out of his skin if he has to stay like this much longer. They come together like two magnets any time they happen to be in the same area. It seems inevitable that one day it was going to happen this way. David recalls Patrick’s fall from the cliff, how fucking helpless he felt. It doesn’t have to be that way this time.

He sucks in a deep breath, and runs.

“Patrick?" David kneels next to him, hoping he's not too late. "If I help, do you think you can walk at all?”

A long groan escapes in place of an answer. Patrick looks up, eyes barely open. David thinks he sees a flicker of recognition, but then Patrick’s eyelids flutter shut.

“No. Fuck! Not today. Jesus Christ, not now.” David pleads, quickly arranging his arms under Patrick’s limp body, lifting him off the ground, and holding him as tightly as the injuries will allow. He doesn’t even care about the blood smearing his clothes right now; only about ignoring the wounded noises rumbling against his chest, and getting somewhere safe.

Finally, they make it to David’s car, waiting just over the hill where he left it. He arranges Patrick neatly in the passenger seat of the Aston Martin, making sure he’s secure. The moment David slams the driver’s side door shut, he’s got Ronnie on speed dial.

“Aren’t you supposed to be on a plane or something?” The gravelly voice complains.

“No time to explain. I need you to get Ted and tell him to be ready. I’ll be there in ten.”

“David, what the hell is going on?”

“Shut up, and do the thing!” David spits, ending the call.

“D’vid?” Wha-?”

“Just hang on. I’ve got you. Just promise me you’ll hang on, Patrick.”

Six minutes later David pulls into the lower garage, barely putting the car in park before scrambling to get out. Dr. Mullens dutifully rushes over to help retrieve Patrick while David recounts what information he has. Ted, ever the loyal confidant, doesn’t ask any questions about how Agent Brewer has come to be in his care. He, and one of his assistants, swiftly transport Patrick away to begin their work.

“I probably don’t really wanna know, but what the hell is that man doing here?” Ronnie asks, far too calmly for David’s liking.

“I’m going to need a stiff drink for this conversation.” David pinches the bridge of his nose as he walks inside, navigating his way to the bar. “Can I get you something?”

Ronnie ignores any attempts to smooth things over in favor of reaching past him for the Macallan Lalique 57 and pouring herself a generous serving. When she possessively slides the bottle closer to where she’s sitting, David opts for the Macallan 71, reveling in the smooth burn as it slides down his throat.

“So, about Brewer. Spill it.”

David positions himself on the leather topped barstool, resting one foot on the rungs and letting the other dangle carelessly. He’s been waiting for this day, when he would be found out, hoping in equal measure that it would never happen and for the opportunity to stop hiding. “He was on an assignment that went sideways. I happened to be there, saw he was hurt, and brought him here.”

With another gulp of her whiskey, Ronnie glares at him. “And why were you there instead of on a plane to Cameroon?”

He mirrors her, taking another swallow from his tumbler, steeling himself to answer. David rests the hand with his drink on the bar top, tapping one of his rings against the crystal. “Because I knew Agent Brewer would be there and wanted to make sure Patrick was safe.”

David thinks Ronnie might throttle him if she weren’t so occupied coughing and spluttering on her drink.

“You what?!” she rasps. “How long–” Another cough cuts off her question. David sighs, reaching behind the bar for a bottle of water and pushing it her way.

He wants to argue that he’s different from all the other notches on Sebastien’s bedpost, but David knows he’s not.

“Guess that makes me Echo,” he mutters.

“Come, David.” Sebastien sneers, snapping his fingers like he’s calling a dog. A faithful pet he’s still somehow disappointed to find waiting for him. “Time to leave.”

In all the years of artfully sneaking around for missions, Patrick Brewer never thought his expertise would lead him here. At least, not as many times as it has.

The hotel ballroom must have close to 800 people, but he’s already seen the one he’s after. Patrick knows he’s been spotted, too. They’ve been chasing each other around the globe - from Mexico to Monaco, South Africa to Saskatchewan, and everywhere between - for years now. This dance is familiar and they’re intimately acquainted with how the steps go.

Patrick sips his sparkling champagne, peering over the rim, and meeting familiar dark eyes standing on the upper balcony. One delicate hand, with olive skin and silver rings, lifts a champagne flute from the railing in a silent toast across the sea of otherwise ignorant partygoers. Patrick’s target raises a single dark eyebrow, then tilts the glass to his lips, draining it in one go. He replaces the vessel and smirks in Patrick’s direction before turning to walk away. Patrick recognizes it for the signal it is, sitting his now empty glass on a passing server’s tray.

As if by intuition alone, his feet carry him up the staircase, past eclectic older dealers arguing whether a Van Gogh or a Cézzane will fetch more, young heiresses flirting shamelessly, and the occasional solo chap watching them. The stream of people thins the further Patrick walks, the lights becoming more spread out, leaving shadowy patches between. The electric glow of an Exit sign catches his eye, and he’s just about to turn back when he finds himself tugged into a dark alcove, pinned to the wall.

Patrick smirks, noting the warm, spicy scent now surrounding him. It should make him wary, but that sensation stopped long ago, replaced by want and lust. “Rose, we meet again.”

“So we do, Mr. Brewer,” a voice purrs in response. “I hope you’ve been well since Denmark.”

Patrick traces a finger over the curves he’s become so accustomed to, feeling the sleek mother-of-pearl buttons under his skin until he hooks onto the V of the single-breasted tuxedo jacket. “Never better. Should we exchange the usual my country wants you dead pleasantries first or is foreplay off the menu tonight?”

A singular growl precedes firm hands pinning Patrick’s wrists above his head, warm lips and tongue meeting his own. No matter how many times they’ve done this, it always makes him dizzy. It shouldn’t be this way, he should be capturing David Rose and hand delivering him to the Canadian government. Instead, he always finds himself in total disbelief at how right, and fucking life affirming, it feels to be under David’s control.

Sometimes, dangerously, he thinks he wants it forever. It only took Patrick mentioning once that he doesn’t sleep with anyone else between their trysts. David went off the grid for over a year before they came crashing back together in a blissful rendezvous where the only sounds were gasps and skin on skin. Patrick fell asleep with David slung across his body, head on his chest, and he thought they turned a corner. But when he woke in the morning, David was nowhere to be found. They didn’t see each other for three months until their paths crossed in Moscow.

“David,” Patrick pants, too close for comfort to losing his composure like a teenage boy as David grinds their hips together. And he’s not going to do that in a suit that had a comma on the price tag. He’s not. “Please.”

“Want me to stop?” David’s teeth drag over Patrick’s earlobe before scraping along the line of his jaw.

“No?”

David chuckles softly, the vibrations humming against Patrick’s neck. “Are you sure, Mr. Brewer?”

Patrick can only hiss in response when David’s hips thrust forward, holding him in place.

“Well, I’m not getting on my knees for you in a hallway, in this suit,” David’s breath ghosts against the shell of Patrick’s ear. “I know you don’t always follow orders, but be good and meet me in the penthouse. I’ll make it worth your while.”

David presses a searing kiss against his mouth, pulling Patrick’s bottom lip between his teeth, before he retreats into the darkness. Patrick feels adrift without the weight of David to anchor him, even knowing they’ll be tangled together soon. He stands tall, straightening his jacket and adjusting his bowtie. He reaches into his pocket for his phone so he can at least check his hair in the camera. Patrick smiles to himself when his fingers brush over the keycard David slipped in next to it. He taps the card, deciding to abandon checking his reflection, hoping he won’t encounter anyone else important along the way.

After all, there’s no time to waste when he has a foreign agent to catch.

I had a dream where I was scrolling through your blog at a concert. why? who knows. but it made me wonder, do you like to listen to music? if so what kind of music do you like?

also thank you so much for being curious as to my music taste, that makes me so happy🥺music used to be a really vulnerable thing to me and i was so afraid to share it with anyone (like. i would tremble if anyone gave me the aux cord), but recently i’ve become more solid in it and i love to share and exchange music with people!!

cut bc omg this got long😭i am so sorry i got kinda carried away (if you cant tell i love music)

i listen to lots of different music—i could probably listen to anything you put on and enjoy it (though my limit would be like. hard screamo metal. but i can endure that genre with the songs that aren’t quite as hardcore haha!! and even then i do appreciate them, cause i have a friend who’s really into metal and i’ve learned that the scream singing takes a lot of voice skill!!)

but my favorite genres are alt/indie rock, 80s, and 80s inspired music :D idk what it is about the sound of 80s music but it just flows through me and feels so ,,, idk. it’s so dreamy and synthy and i just love love love it. i can’t get enough of it.

some of my favorite artists for dreamy 80s inspired vibe music are dayglow, yot club, strawberry guy, WOAH, mac demarco, castlebeat, djo. and then for actual 80s music, i am obliged to list kate bush <3 and then also thomas dolby hhrjhrhrh

for alt rock and stuff, hippo campus, the neighborhood, HUNNY, wallows, COIN, half•alive, girl in red

other miscellaneous artists i listen to: surfaces, gorillaz (sometimes), mitski, yaeow, mimi bay, vansire, boy pablo

i also love classical music (favorite is debussy, im learning several of his pieces rn bc oh my gosh he just Gets it. he gets it), video game music, and honestly? i listen to kpop occasionally. and im not afraid to say that anymore >:) sometimes you get sick of american music and kpop is so good and it really slaps and there’s no shame in listening to it and appreciating it as music. (i mean.. i did go through a phase in 7th grade but let’s not talk about that!)

also,,, this might be shameless self promo,, but since i mentioned video game music, i actually started posting compilations of vgm on youtube, mostly for myself, but a few people end up finding them every now and then and thats super cool. if you ever want to listen, here’s my channel :) there’s not that many but i have sooo many in the works im just too lazy to compile them properly😭

anyways holy crap i think i got everything?😭im so sorry i wasnt expecting it to be that long!! this made me realize that even though im more comfortable with sharing than i used to be, i still really,, haven’t done it. like at all. so thank you anon, this gives me courage to tell more people about the music i like!!

book recs: beach read by miss emily henry!! Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman, the lead singer of japanese breakfast wrote a memior about her mother passing away from cancer that’s called Crying in H Mart and it’s phenomenal… definitely made me sob A Lot but highly recommend.

tv shows: i may deystroy you (tw: rape and sexual assault!!), yellowjackets, abbot elementary, fleabag (duh)… hm blanking on anything else but!! hope you can find something new you like!!

This is a video that I wasn’t that excited about when I saw the title/concept the first time, but I ended up enjoying it way more than I thought I would. And still true! It’s more personal/honest Phil again, and I love that. Although he did skip showing some of the questions. Also, still laughing at Phil’s Insta story promo for this one.

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. (And for mentioning that the ask function was turned off on the podcast Tumblr. There's no reason for it to be, so I'll make sure that's fixed!) We appreciate the suggestion! We tend to feature fics purely by trope, not by picking a particular author (we pick the trope and fics that we'll discuss first, then reach out to the author of one or more to see who might be interested in chatting with us) - but it's always great to have new authors to check out! We're hungry, hungry readers. (Like hungry hippos but with fanfic, passionate opinions about Destiel, and no recognition for the fact we should have gone to sleep hours ago.) Whenever we are picking fics to cover or rec we always try to make sure we have a good mixture of "classics" of the trope within the fandom, lesser-known or underappreciated gems that we'd love to see get more recognition, older fics and newer fics, and fics that have a twist to them or that do something unusual with the trope compared to the other fics we're covering. To us, this is the most "fair" way to do it, so that we can cover a whole range of stories, authors, and styles, and not only the same couple of fics everyone has already heard of. It does become difficult to find fics for a trope if the fic isn't tagged conventionally (because believe me, we scour those tags on AO3 for new fics or gems to cover while we're researching a trope), so we will almost always put out a call for recs when we're in the research phase - usually, this happens in our dedicated Mixtape Book Club channel on the Profound Bond Discord server, (a huge Destiel server which everyone should totally check out here!) but we do sometimes reach out on other socials such as Twitter or here just to mix things up. With over 100k fics out there, we definitely have enough material to last a long, long time, and we'll certainly be revisiting popular tropes more than once. So, if you have a favorite author that you think has a great fic for XYZ trope, please do respond to a rec call with a link to the fic, just in case we miss them when researching the tag! (You can also suggest any tropes you'd like to see, so if your favorite author has a fic you'd love to hear us talk about, by all means, please do suggest the trope and the fic as an example of it!) We'll never be able to cover every fic (with 100k of them to read plus time to write our own, we'd need a few clones) but we're not averse to trying! (Another thing to mention: if we don't feature a fic/author/series for one trope, it's also sometimes because we already have them in mind for another episode. Gotta spread out that love!) OH MY GOD I HAVE SO MANY!! It really depends on what genre you’re interested in and what you like; I’ll sort of try to break it down that way (and not just rec every gay book I’ve ever read lmao)

General fiction:

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz is about two Mexican boys growing up in El Paso in the late 1980s and the writing style is absolutely incredible. It was the first Gay Book(tm) I remember and I spent months of 2012-2013 trying to find a copy and it was 100% worth it.

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapien Agenda by Becky Albertalli. We know it, we love it, I wanted to include it anyway.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee is a historical fiction (leaning on fantasy) romp about a boy in the 18th century going on his grand tour with the best friend he’s in love with; the sequel stars his aro/ace sister. Bi lead, Black gay love interest, and a sequel about the importance of girl friendships.

I’m on page four of Gail Wilhelm’s Torchlight to Valhalla but I love the writing style and the fact that it’s a lesbian book from 1938 that apparently ends happily almost made me cry so there’s that.

anything by Virginia Woolf, but especially Orlando, which is a love letter to her girlfriend.

Soft Place to Fall by Ba Tortuga is a fun gay cowboy romance; it’s dumb and sappy and predictable and fantastic.

Sci-Fi / Fantasy

THIS IS WHERE I THRIVE this is my wheelhouse so sorry if I get carried away lol

anything by Sarah Gailey. Their Upright Women Wanted is about queer librarian spies in a futuristic wild west. The American Hippo series (River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow) is about queer hippo wranglers in an alternate 19th century. Magic for Liars is a murder mystery set in a magic school, perfect if you’re trying to ditch She Who Must Not Be Named but still want your fun magic school itch scratched.

Nottingham by Anna Burke is a lesbian retelling of Robin Hood; I’m still working through it but I’m pretty sure all the merry men are queer women and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is absolutely fantastic; it’s got an entirely Latinx cast with a trans lead and a ghost love interest; 15/10 almost made me cry.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo has that casual queer rep that I absolutely adore. Like yeah sometimes you need a book about Being Queer but sometimes you also need a heist where the badass gunslinger casually goes “oh yeah not just girls” and steals a tank, you know?

This is very I’m A Child Of The Late 90s/ Early 2000s but Tamora Pierce was huge for me growing up. She clearly stuffed as many queer characters into her world as publishers would let her, and recently she’s confirmed fan theories about even more queerness (ace/aro characters, trans readings, etc) in her work.

Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness was published in 1969 and treats gender as a fluid thing; I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my bedside table and I’m very excited to get to it.

Poetry

all of it straight people don’t get poems

Badger Clark was a gay cowboy poet; I love his stuff so much. “The Westerner” made me absolutely feral and “Others” gutted me.

Wilfred Owen is best known for his work about WWI, but “Maundy Thursday” and “How Do I Love Thee” are absolutely incredible.

Whitman wrote poems about being gay and was one of the more iconic queer voices of the 19th century, at least in literary circles.

Byron was an icon and also incredibly queer.

Sappho is the iconic one; Anne Carson’s translation of her work (If Not, Winter) is fantastic and the one I’d personally recommend.

Classics

If you’re down to read between the lines do I have some books for you

Stoker was gay (and wrote thirsty letters to Whitman), and no one can convince me that Dracula is a straight book. Arthur and Quincey were dating thank you for coming to my TEDx talk.

The Iliad is long and complex but also Achilles and Patroclus wanted their ashes mixed when they died (fellas...)

anything by Wilde but especially A Portrait of Dorian Gray.

Les Miserables has a character who “admired, loved, and venerated” another man, and who “took great care not to believe in anything” but said other man (fellas...). There’s also an entire page about how the lead has never felt any form of love other than familial (fellas... is it aro to spend a whole page talking about how you’ve never loved anyone).

I haven’t read Moby Dick but I know there’s like three pages about how much the narrator loves his crewmate (fellas...)

Nonfiction

A lot of people are scared of nonfic but I’m gonna let you in on a secret: you don’t have to read the whole book. Pick and choose chapters that interest you, put it down for a year, whatever. Nonfic’ll be there for you.

Portrait of a Marriage by Nigel Nicolson is a look into his parents’ open relationship and his mother’s relationship with Virginia Woolf; it’s a gorgeous exploration of the various ways that love and marriage can be flexible and it changed how I look at relationships.

A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronski is a good intro to queer history.

We Are Everywhere by Matthew Riemer and Leighton Brown is a great look at the Stonewall Era and the time after especially, and it’s full of incredible pictures. They also run @/lgbt_history on insta and 10/10 for that.

Love and Resistance: Out of the Closet and Into the Stonewall Era by Jason Baumann is fantastic too; it’s got pictures and short descriptions of what’s happening in them. Maybe not a first place, but if you know the general scope of the queer rights movement it’s a fantastic thing (or if you don’t and you’re ready to google lmao).

My Dear Boy or anything else by Rictor Norton is incredible. My Dear Boy is a collection of gay love letters; he’s also got books on queer culture in 18th century London and queering the Gothic. You can find a lot of his stuff online here and My Dear Boy specifically here.

If you want more/ something more specific, don’t hesitate!! I work in a library and I’m always finding new gay stuff and I love it.

Zuko does The Dance™ when he eats 1.2k words

It’s going to be a long night, Sokka realizes on his way to the Fire Lord’s chamber, and Zuko likely hasn’t eaten, so he asks one of the attendants at the door to bring dinner for the two of them.

“Something easy,” Sokka explains as he strides into the chamber, “that Zuko will definitely like. Maybe komodo chicken?”

He doesn’t think about it again until later, after he’s been ushered through the antechamber into a salon where Zuko sits on the floor in front of a low table. A pile of scrolls lies in front of him, and he keeps looking at the topmost one as he fills another sheet of paper with his carefully practiced characters. Sokka sits across from him and covertly moves the inkstone and stick away from Zuko’s sleeve.

Zuko looks up at him in alarm.

“Wow, look at you, it seems like you’ve gotten a lot done already on your own,” Sokka says encouragingly. He grabs the stack of papers on the far side of the table and hefts them meaningfully, raising his eyebrows at Zuko.

“There’d be more done if you got here earlier,” Zuko says pointedly, though they both know he isn’t actually angry. He avoids the view of Sokka’s contracting biceps he knows is meant to distract him.

“Hey, you asked me to take the meeting with the Hubei governor,” Sokka reminds him. He drops the stack on the floor next to him with a thud reminiscent of a camelephant foot hitting the ground.

The left side of Zuko’s face quirks up in a grin. “And now that you know him so well, you can be the one to respond to his letter,” he says. He hands Sokka his own sheet of paper and one of the scrolls.

“You’re joking,” Sokka says. He unfurls the scroll. “He sent one, too?”

“Everyone’s sending congratulations, Sokka,” Zuko says, borderline impatiently. “There’ve been hawks coming every hour since your dad made the announcement.”

Sokka sighs. “I guess this is what I get for being engaged to the Fire Lord.” Sokka hears a huff and looks up to find Zuko with his one eyebrow raised, unimpressed. Sokka breaks into a toothy grin. “Not that it isn’t absolutely, completely worth it.”

Zuko lowers his face back down toward his paper in an attempt to hide the small smile on his face, and Sokka looks smug as he picks up his own brush and starts writing.

Only a little while later, the double doors open, and a litter of servants enter the salon bearing several trays. Zuko stares, his mouth agape, as an attendant sets a soban table next to the two men, and the rest of the litter begin laying dishes on its surface. There is not only komodo chicken, but also squirrel-fried fish, sticky rice and komodo rhino sausage wrapped in lotus leaf, fresh green cucumber with garlic and red chilies, hippo-beef dumplings, and even Zuko’s favorite Earth Kingdom delicacy, fried dough filled with sweet red bean paste. One last servant presents them with a bowl of elaborately sliced mangoes, bananas, and cherries, and a pot of jasmine tea, before going to stand with his colleagues.

“I hope these humble leftovers will be to your liking—” The senior attendant pauses; Sokka’s term of address is still a little ambiguous, especially in light of his recent engagement to the Fire Lord. Does one still consider him an ambassador, or is his status now that of a royal? “Sir,” the attendant finally settles on.

Zuko finally regains his ability to speak. “What is all of this?” he asks. He stares at the spread in a daze.

“It’s for you,” Sokka says kindly before turning to address the attendants. “This is great! Thank you.”

The attendants bow and leave the room, closing the doors quietly behind them. Sokka resumes his writing. Zuko still stares at the food.

“Why?” he finally asks.

“I figured you needed to eat,” Sokka says simply. He gestures to the dishes with the back of his brush. “You should start.” He grins cheekily. “I’ve still got a lot of catching up to do on my letters.”

“You do,” Zuko agrees, and he considers waiting for Sokka to join him, or insisting he start eating first. But the fragrance of the rice calls a little louder, and Zuko picks up his chopsticks and eagerly analyzes the dishes before him for his first bite.

For a while, all Sokka hears while he writes his replies is the stroke of his brush on paper and the sound of Zuko’s chopsticks occasionally tapping together. But then there is something else, something he’s never heard before and that he cannot place, like a rustling of fabric, but not quite as loud and more regular. and Sokka raises his head slowly out of curiosity.

Zuko looks sleepy, as he normally does when he stays up this late, with half-lidded eyes and a looseness about his shoulders. But he is also smiling. Contentment softens the lines of his face as he chews his food and his chopsticks float above the dishes, preparing for his next selection. Each bite is rewarded with a brief squeezing of his eyes shut, and a little sway, before he resumes a curious motion Sokka doesn’t understand at first glance. Zuko bobs up and down to some silent beat, his head moving in one direction and then another, and his free hand idly moving in tandem with the rest of his body.

Sokka realizes all at once that Zuko is dancing.

His mouth drops open slightly and his chest seizes at the sight of his betrothed, one of the fiercest firebenders in the world and the most powerful man of his nation, dancing during his dinner. If he were a crying man, Sokka would be moved to tears, but he’s instead simply, painfully overwhelmed with the desire to sweep Zuko into his arms, or to tie him to the bed, or just cradle him and keep him from the rest of the world. The little movements of his body, the sweet joy of his gaze on the food, the sway of his hair are all too much for Sokka to think about literally anything else, and the scroll slips from his hand and falls to the ground, forgotten.

Zuko stops dancing at the sound and looks up at Sokka, blinking slowly.

“Sokka?”

Sokka's mouth doesn’t work yet, and he simply gazes at Zuko, pure adoration shining from his eyes.

Zuko misreads it.

“What, is there something on my face?” he asks self-consciously. He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, worry furrowing his brow. “It’s not my fault there’s so much sauce on squirrel-fried fish.”

Sokka finally shakes himself out of his reverie, and he smiles lovingly at Zuko. “You’re perfect,” he says earnestly, and he leans across the table to kiss Zuko soundly. He tastes like garlic and chilies and salt. “I really love you.”

Zuko looks a little dazed when Sokka pulls back, and a light blush colors his cheeks. But he looks pleased. “I love you, too,” he says, his voice a little hoarse, and he laughs, short and sweet. He points to the food, barely any less abundant than when he began. “Now will you please eat with me?”

“In a minute,” Sokka replies, picking up the scroll once more, “I just really want to finish this.”

Zuko nods and tucks back into one of the bundles of sticky rice, sighing and dropping his shoulders as he relaxes anew.

Sokka smiles as he waits patiently for the dancing to start again.

I mean, I love weddings and this has SEVERAL of them, so obviously it’s gonna be on my rec list. It’s a great story and a beautiful ride, from beginning to end. There’s a great balance of comedy and fluff... and tbh the banter? [chef’s kiss]

Fantasy and Fandom Tropes: Captive on the carousel of time

There is so much to love about this fic. Seeing David and Patrick from Twyla’s perspective is absolutely adorable, for one, and Twyla’s perspective IN GENERAL is delightful. There’s also a time-loop AND Stevie/Twyla.

This is a cool take on Patrick and Ronnie’s dynamic and I’ve frankly accepted it as part of my personal head-canon. It’s so spot on.

At no point in my life did I think, “You know who would make a great superhero? David Rose.” Then I read this, and I haven’t stopped thinking... You know who would make a great superhero? David Fucking Rose. It’s a great exploration of his character and Patrick’s character... and also David’s familial dynamic with Stevie and Alexis. I would read another 20k of this, to be totally honest with ya’ll.

Free Space honorable mention: Make a Wish

Okay, I couldn’t choose between this one and the above one for my free space, so you’re getting both. I fucking love this concept and how the author incorporated the rings into the genie mythos... and the mythos the author created in general for how genies work? The Aladdin references were lovely, but there’s also a fresh, original sorta vibe. And the background of HOW David ended up a genie in the first place is just... gold. Such a good story overall.

Based on a Movie: Taste of a Poison Paradise

It’s Alexis as Harley Quinn. Do I need to say more? This is so so good. I love ALL of the author’s choices re: character alter egos. Rachel as Black Canary? Stevie as Catwoman? STEVIE/RACHEL??? And, obvi, the Twylexis of it all. My favorite part (and why it gets this bingo slot) is the way Alexis’s thought bubbles actually made their way into the text, ala Harley’s voiceovers in Birds of Prey. It worked really really well.

David’s POV: Flying Coach

Genuinely a fucking delight. David’s characterization here is flawless, first of all, and... honestly, whoever you are, author person... I’d really like to see what happens next in Paris. So, if you could get on that, that would be great. [David Rose voice] Thanks so much.

Multiple Tropes: You Happened

High school David/Patrick and Stevie/Twyla? Sign me the fuck up. This is one of my favorite takes on the “David works at Rose Video” concept (which is already one of my fave SC tropes), and it seamlessly folds in so many different nods to canon. It’s sweet and it’s funny and it’s angsty and it’s just a lot. It’s so good.

Canadian Tropes: Close Encounters of the Alces Kind

This had me giggling basically the entire time. Who wouldn’t love a text-based fic about a moose? ...David, probably... but that’s it.

I will never shut up about this fic for as long as I fucking live. I’m literally tearing up writing this stupid little rec and thinking about it. David’s whole story with his galleries translates SO well into what the author set up for him here... and humble!famous Patrick is just Correct in every way. It’s a brilliant, brilliant AU... and tbh? I wish David and Patrick were real so they could actually create this play together. I’d love to see it.

Set Outside SC: how it's gonna always be

This one stole my heart. It’s SO beautifully written, first of all, and it’s a great story. Both David and Patrick have the habit of running from their problems, but it’s with each other that they finally dive in headfirst. Also, y’know, the fic is 🔥🔥🔥.

This had me fucking cackling. By now, ya’ll know how much Stevie/Alexis mean to me and dksvjioehgo dude this take is just... [chef’s kiss]. The author even wrote lyrics. Like. That ALONE sends this fic to the next fucking level. Quebecky Stan 4 Lyfe.

Another take on the “Stevie and Twyla compete for a council seat” prompt. I loved how this brought out their competitive sides. A delight.
