hey how do u draw so good i am an beginning artist and i need 2 be good can u pls tell me!!!

also i like ur webcomic aleph null my friend got me into it recently she loves all things homestuck since we were little

Firstly thank you both, everyone who lends a hand on it works very hard on it, we know its not for everyone but hey as long as you are enjoying the story that's perfect!

As for the art stuff- I can't exactly tell you how to be “good” cuz “good" is subjective especially with art, can give you tips for improving what you already have though.

1: Baseline never compare yourself to others just as a rule of thumb, be inspired sure but don't compare cuz everyone is on their own path and develops on their own time comparing will only get you frustrated with yourself.

2: If you are stuck don't be afraid to ask for help/crit, a second pair of eyes might be able to see things you can't, not everyone is great at GIVING crit but usually if you ask other artists they can give you some tools to help.

3: Find something you really like and just keep drawing it, draw as much of it as you want for as long as you want, eventually you will improve but you have to keep going. Art is like a muscle- it's literally built off muscle memory- gotta work it out for it to get stronger.

4: Do studies! Lots of studies! If there is a texture you want to master, find a bunch of images of that texture and try to replicate it. If there is a pose or body type you want to learn how to draw, find a bunch of references and break it down into stuff like simple shapes and lines. Study your fave artists style, see what their line weight is like, what brushes they use, what shapes and colors they enjoy, how they shade, lil quirks of their style and then practice by trying to draw your own character with all those aspects.

Pretty much all artists get inspired by others, all styles are a mix of something an artist likes and wants to incorporate into their own work. We are kinda like lil magpies that see something shiny and go ohhh I like that I'm gonna nab this one part and do my own spin on it. Sooner or later you get a blend of every piece of inspo with your own personal flair cuz every style is unique in its own way. The more you draw all of these blended things the more you settle into your OWN style.

#hopefully thats a good balance of like actual tools for improvement and just mentally good things to just remember #might not work for everyone but these are the things i found most important/ helpful personally #can not stress enough the comparing part that is gonna be the DEATH of your self esteem #get inspired never compare art is not a competition #references are also not a crutch #i always have two windows open in clip studio one side is just a collage of refs the other is the actual art im working on #yeah try drawing a bicycle without any reference see what happens lol (thats from one of my professors who wanted to prove a point)#no one could draw a bicycle despite all of us seeing bikes every day chained to the bike racks outside the building #ask #art tips #clock rambles #long post

shsjshs idek where to start with Dola ;w; thank u for giving me an outlet for talking about her LND incarnation omg I hope you know what you’re getting into when you asked this…

so like!! in general she’s my OC that I use everywhere bc I just like her too much to even care about making other OCs because to me she’s like… the ultimate cool doll >.> she tends to retain a lot of her traits each time + I try to keep as much of her original conflicted artist background as possible while still making it make sense with the lore of the universe I’m putting her in

So in LND as MC, she still has Caleb + Josephine, is a Hunter, and ofc has the aether core in her heart but strays from canon in that:

Art has a huge place in her life because her parents were renowned artists and she was primed to follow in their footsteps. She ends up dropping it sometime after she was orphaned though, and only picks it up around high school age and in secret

Gets dreams of fragments of her past lives with Rafayel, but she can never recall the face of the man that’s always in her dreams once she wakes up. Trying to sketch out the man’s face is her main reason for getting into art again, and it snowballs into her making art inspired by her dreams in general

She knows a lot about Lemurian myth and history because she dreams about the place + this one Lemurian so much that she had to look into it, and by extension is fascinated by the sea

Which also means that she did actually attend Rafayel’s lectures at her university when he became a visiting professor there. They kind of only have one proper conversation throughout that entire year though.

Her heart issues affect her more than they affect MC in canon, so the UNICORNS treat her a little differently to work around it. Largely that means she doesn’t go on as many missions as MC seems to? And is often deployed a support/the human radar bc of her Evol rather than a frontline fighter.

Doesn’t feel that strongly about being a Hunter once she actually is one? Tbh I think she kinda hates a majority of the work and commitment that comes with it but feels she can’t just quit after spending so much time working towards becoming one. Xavier and their training sessions together are kind of the main things keeping her there (+ she has fun killing Wanderers)

She’s not as bubbly or cheerful or bratty as the canon MC is. Her personality is a lot more reserved and introverted and she LOVES studying + learning, but there’s still a bit of playfulness there. There’s actually so many parts of the main story, Tender Moments, and Bond/Memoria that I’m changing or outright excluding because they just don’t work out for her the same way they do with canon MC sigh >.>;;

LOVES plants and flowers. In every iteration I have of her she’s at least half covered in floral tattoos and her home is always full of them! Very into flower language to an extent that I’m not ahdjsjs she makes me research a lot of things…

Kind of obsessed with death (mostly because she believes herself to be on a short timer) and is a little fucked up? Will join Rafayel in his quest for vengeance and will believe his murders are all justified if she finds out about them tbh.

^Okay I feel like that’s a lot ahdjshsja >.> in LND I wrote her with Rafayel in mind as the endgame >.> Zayne’s more of a bestie/brother/secret third thing, and Xavier… I guess to her he’s a friend but he definitely is in love with her? And Dola eventually becomes aware of that and isn’t quite sure what to do about it.

Gosh anyway!! Thank you for being interested ahdjshsjs she’s been my baby and muse for like… 3-4 years at this point? I have so many thoughts about her like you wouldn’t believe ;-;

i’m supposed to be getting ready to head out in a bit but YOU!!! YOUU!!!!!!!!! PURPOSEFULLY TRAPPING ME!!!!! anyway omg i have a list of the artists i really like on my listography but its not up-to-date thank u for reminding me that!

in no particular order ken sugimori, shigeki maeshima, kazuya nuri, masayuki doi (particularly in smtiv) have really latched onto my head as i progressed thru my art over the years i think. more recently, most of the snk artists especially shinkiro, and eisuke ogura’s smooth watercoloury painting styles are so pleasant to look at. ryoko kui’s art studies and little doodles for building up on dungeon meshi are also so inspiring they have been enough to break me out of my really bad art block 😭😭!!!

i think the key illustrator that really has stood out to me the most is shigeki maeshima! PLS LOOK 🫵

tatakau shisho is a light novel ive talked abt on here several times and it had such an intense grip on me in middle school and i think his work for the series is some of the most gorgeous art i’ve ever seen in his portfolio and for any series even, and to this day is still what i grab my inspo from😭😭

idk if i could achieve the details he has in his art ever but omg liking his works was my personality and im so sad tatakau shisho was never really known enough for ppl to notice jus how beautiful the artwork (and the story) was. on the plus side some of yall might know him from drawing for fe heroes so I THINK HES DOING GREAT IM SO HAPPY FOR HIM FOR THAT

anyway as a summary i think the pattern is i really like seeing smooth crisp lines and velvetty palettes, expressive eyes, REALLY DETAILED HAIR yeah. i started looking deeper into art as a kid with maeshima’s works and eventually got to here 🫡 my art is a little more on the cartoon-y pixel-y style recently but that is def also due to many more wonderful influences (see above!). im working towards incorporating my style into that flowey watercoloury vibe! eventually!

I just wanted to pop in here and tell you that you've always inspired me to draw art and I'm cautiously attempting digital now after some odd years of traditionalism,,, I only really say this because due to like 4 of those years I never realized I followed you as well during those years... I might not really ever post my art [M-Maybe in the future and I'll tag you!...] but you really do truly spark the heart of creativity throughout your pieces from coloring to posing and I just wanted to thank you personally for that.

IDK if this will provide additional inspiration but my 3 biggest art inspos that have helped me develop my art are squeedge (squeedgemonster / squeedgeart) , andrew hussie (see his old comics like whistles and neon icecream headache), and guttertongue!

It's great to hear you're attempting digital art. Traditional is really difficult and I'm proud of u doing that for so long! I can't comfortably draw traditionally anymore because it hurts my wrist too much.

thank you for all the nice words <3 my main inspos are LAM (ramdayo1122 on twt), onono imoko (_himehajime on twt), terada tera (@ trcoot everywhere), rurudo (i forgot their @ but you can probs find them just by rurudo :( ), unxi (unxxi on twt), bebe (slso known as bebe pp or bebe fate, i forgot their twt handle too😭) anddd these are all i can say fastly off the top of my head. i mostly base my linework and stuff more around works like bebe's, unxi's or rurudo's and color like a combination between lam's and onono's! terada's works are also great inspirations always.. the colors too <3

my favorite game of all time is sadly dohna dohna (minors dont look it up, its an eroge) and onono made the work for it. i am very very much in love w onono's works and though i tried to emulate a style more like his in the past (youll notice on some older illust), i now try to mix them all towards something im both comfortable with and enjoy making.. and enjoy seeing the end product of too! i learnt painting first thing which is silly i know but im generally more comfortable with painting than cel shading (like onono's) sooo um yeah 👍hope this helped u anon

It was eerily silent in the hallway as your feet made their way to their destination through the mostly abandoned college dormitory. Since my brush settings are a reward for my $6+ patreons, I don’t really feel like it’d be fair to share them! But you can probably find some old version of them in my art tips tag :D as for art tips... for lineart the only thing I can really say is to not overthink it and just go with the flow, whatever feels comfortable for you will make for the most visually pleasing lineart too, in my experience! Coloring is something I’m constantly experimenting with as well, but there too my usual mindset is “the easier and faster the better” - generally, I just use flats and then add shadows on them with any color that goes from light blue to pink-ish purple on a layer set on multiply, anything that makes it look fancier than that is just me adding small details like sparkles or shines or anything of the like!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm the thing is that drawing a lot really is all there is to it, but if I had to give one single serious tip for this it would be to find something you really really really really enjoy drawing and to just draw it - draw it badly if that’s the only way you know how to draw it, but make sure to always draw it while having fun, and slowly you’ll get better without even realizing you are. If you like a ship, draw that ship! If you like plants, draw plants! If you like animals, draw animals! It’s okay if you don’t know how to draw it, or if you feel like your skills aren’t good enough for what you mean to draw, because honestly I felt like that when I started too, and I still feel like that every time I pick up my pen, and I’m sure I’ll forever feel like that for as long as I’ll draw - my ideas will always be bigger than my skills, and maybe so will yours! So what’s it matter if you start drawing stuff beyond your skill level now or later? At least you’ll be having fun with it, and the only way to learn how to do something new is to go and do it, anyway

Polyfidelity is the kind of poly my partner and I practice and I don't see it played out too much, so to see a relationship like that with characters I love and an art style I adore fills me with such warm fuzzies.
