der See - the lake

die See - the sea/ocean

das Meer - the sea/ocean

ein Meer - an ocean

the difference between a lake and the ocean is whether it's feminine or masculine

also, the plural "die Seen" is most commonly used for lakes, even though according to the dictionary it is apparently used for oceans as well but I haven't seen (hah) or heard it used that way

also 2.0, I only just realised that "sea" seems to be mostly (only) used as plural (a haven't read or heard "a sea" at least) so that would kinda mean that in German "die See" is mostly singular and in English plural and I just think that's interesting

hence why I probably picked Translation Studies as a module this semester lmao

also 3.0, I think Meer would mostly be translated to ocean and See to sea, and vice versa

I love love love idioms and stuff like

for example, in English you have "it's pouring buckets" which is pretty much the same as the German "es schüttet wie aus Eimern"

then we have stuff like the one I mentioned yesterday (?), "skeletons in your closet" vs "Leichen im Keller (bodies in the basement)", which have the same meaning and are similar, but not the same

another example: "bull in a china shop" and "Elefant im Porzellanladen (elephant in a porcellain/china shop)"

there are things like something I just thought of when outside, an idiom referring to when someone is complaining about rain and they arr told "du bist doch nicht aus Zucker (you're not made from sugar)" - even though I don't think there is an English equivalent, the reasoning behind it could still be understood: sugar dissolves in water, so someone doesn't need to be "scared" of the rain cause it won't hurt them

and lastly, there are idioms that are very cultural or historically influenced, or where most people probably neither know nor care why those exist. ones I can think of right now is, to tell someone that they are "schwer auf dem Holzweg" - in this case, "auf dem Holzweg sein" means that a person is off the track, or, of it's more as a threat/warning, that they don't know what's coming for them. also, when I look up "Holzweg" I get "logging-path" as a translation.

bonus:

to my non-German speaking friends - can you make sense of these?

"Du kannst mir nicht das Wasser reichen (You can't hand me the water)"

"Mit ihr ist nicht gut Kirschen essen (It is not possible to comfortably eat cherries with her)" - this translation is a stretch because... this is actually quite hard

favorite male character: 💕💕💕 CASTIEL 💕💕💕 followed by sam, rufus, and death 1.0

favorite female character: ROWENA, followed by ruby, anna, eileen, jo, and miriam from 13x01

(also bonus fave nonbinary character is, of course, 💀🖤billie 🖤💀)

least favorite character: cole, kfc demon, NICK, and ketch (eileen's death is literally one of the cruellest ones in the show I hate him I hate him I hate him)

prettiest character: castiel, bela, eileen, jessica, kali, claire. and cain. yeah.

funniest character: castiel (again), rufus, eileen, rowena and crowley. also sam when he's bitchy which should be always.

favorite season: FOUR. not a contest. tho I usually end up rewatching five too.

favorite episode: I am a basic Bedlund bitch so it is a tie between "on the head of a pin", "the man who would be king" and "my bloody valentine." I also love "mystery spot" and any yockey episode (especially Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets and Funeralia)

favorite romantic ship: saileen. deancassie. every sappic rarepair (especially anna/mary and billie/rowena.) and of course the one that's the reason why I'm here at all, the one that's had its ups and downs and fights but always kept going, the one went canon in 2020 after a decade and reactivated my spn phase for good... deanpala ♥️

favorite family ship: tfw 3.0 (which in my head includes rowena, eileen, etc). jody & claire & alex. bobby & sam & dean. mary and all the boys (including cas and jack.) linda & kevin. ellen & jo.

favorite friend ship: cas & kelly, cas & rowena, cas & charlie, etc etc. I just like it when cas has friends. dean & eileen. jody & the winchesters. and the many I enjoy as both ships and best friends: dean & benny, sam & cas, bobby & rufus, jody & donna, sam & rowena, etc.

worst ship: deanketch because it involves ketch. sam*fer because why would you do that to sam. and all the weird ones, you know the ones.

Take a Family Photo // Ugly Christmas Sweaters // “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”

Dean looked down at the last sweater on the table in a mixture of horror and dismay. “No. There’s no way I’m putting that monstrosity on,” he said, poking at a sleeve that was striped with bright red and green patterns.

“Yes you are, Dean,” Cas said, the plastic light bulbs hanging from his sweater clacking as he picked up the Christmas sweater and held it out to Dean. “Jack desperately wanted to do this. Are you really going to go to his room right now, where he’s putting on a little Santa hat, and tell him no? Are you trying to break my child’s heart?”

“Oh my God,” Dean said, throwing his head back and casting his eyes up to the ceiling. “You’re really laying it on thick today, aren’t you? Where’d you learn to guilt trip like that?” he huffed, reaching out and snatching the hideously ugly sweater from Cas’ hands.

Cas just grinned at him, sly and teasing, and God, Dean shouldn’t be so gone on the angel, he really shouldn’t. But instead of hurling the sweater in Cas’ face, Dean slipped an arm around Cas’ waist and pulled him into a kiss. “You’re lucky I love you,” Dean murmured against his mouth.

“So you’ll wear the sweater for the family photo?” Cas asked, leaning back slightly with a little smirk on his lips.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll wear the tacky reindeer sweater,” he mumbled, once again cursing himself for his tendency to do anything that made his family happy. “Only because if I have to see you pout and Jack pout, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to survive.”

Cas laughed, happy and infectious, and just as Dean leaned in to feel that laugh pressed against his mouth, Jack came bounding into the room with Sam and Eileen right behind him.

“It’s family picture time!” Jack cheered, bouncing over to Cas before readjusting his Santa hat before it slipped off his head. “Dean, are you wearing your sweater?”

“Putting it on right now, Kiddo,” Dean said, a smile tugging at his lips as he looked at Jack. With his ugly sweater and velvet Santa hat, the kid looked ridiculous and yet happier than Dean had ever seen him. If it kept that smile on Jack’s face, then yeah, Dean could handle the embarrassment of wearing a reindeer sweater with little lights between the antlers for a family picture. Especially if Sam was also wearing the same ugly sweater.

Tugging off his flannel and pulling the sweater over his tshirt, Jack cheered happily and announced something about putting on Christmas music before disappearing from the room.

“I look ridiculous,” Dean muttered, dropping his head onto Cas’ shoulder.

With a smile, Cas leaned in and pressed a quick little kiss to Dean’s cheek. “I think you look attractive.”

“Says the guy who walks around in a trenchcoat every day,” Dean teased lightly.

“You love my trenchcoat,” Cas shot back, hands snaking around Dean’s waist until they were tucked into their own little embrace.

Dean hummed, admitting defeat. “Yeah, I do,” he replied, attempting to kiss Cas again. But just as he leaned in, music began to play and the first chords of ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ floated into the room.

“Now it’s perfect,” Jack said, appearing at Dean’s side with a grin. “Picture time!”

Disentangling himself from Cas’ warmth, Dean reached out to ruffle Jack’s hair and set the Santa hat more evenly on top of his head. “Yeah, Jack, it’s picture time.”

Gathering around the tree in the middle of the War Room, they all huddled in close as the old fashioned camera Sam had found clicked and a light flashed; taking the perfect picture of their little found family.
