After more than 10+ years of shipping, that one ship I've been rooting for in a certain fighting game series has finally gotten more canon content AND IN THE MAIN STORYLINE (not just the character endings).

Well I've finally gone insane enough to draw a (dreamworks) trollsona!
She's an alt/indie rock troll who plays the bass guitar, inspired by the musical stylings of Mitski whom I adore 🫶 somewhat sadgirl, occasionally angry, but always with very very big emotions aaaand she has no name at the moment.
(And ofc she's got the fattest crush on Queen Barb and a lot of her songs are secretly about her sssh~)

Artshield
I was going to flop in bed and try to draw from there, but the sudden swarm of AI shit on another of my accounts fueled me with spite, so I'm writing this post NOW rather than tomorrow when I'll be more awake.
If you can't run Glaze/Nightshade because of the insane specs required for it, give a try to Artshield.
It's a web-based app that will let you load all the pics you want and protect them with a big, invisible watermark all over it. It also has a checker option to use after you've shielded your art, to be sure it worked.
Now, I'm terrible with math so I can't explain how it exactly work, but here's the explanation on their blog. If someone who's more math-savvy than me wants to add a simpler explanation to this post, please do!
While it can't poison AIs like Nightshade does, it's still a good solution if you can't run Glaze/Nightshade on your pc... like many of us, really. As I wrote on another post about Glaze, I have a pretty decent gaming pc that, while not being like high-end or anything (my GPU is a RTX 3060), suits my needs perfectly and runs all the games I'm interested in (Tekken 8's demo being the most recent thing).
Yet, in order to try Nightshade, I had to close all the apps I had running in the background, which were, in that moment, Opera and Discord. Only when I shut them down, it finally started. 10 minutes for the mid setting and the result was awful.
I tried WebGlaze (not Cara yet), and the results were also awful, given you can't control the strenght of the glazing much.
I understand it might be hard to develop this kind of technology, but I wish they would meet us halfway since the majority of people use old machines, laptops (a friend of mine tried running Glaze on hers and the fans started spinning like it was ready to fly) or even just tablets and phones, so those specs are hard to meet.
That's why I want to share Artshield, as a solution for those of you who can't run Glaze and Nightshade.
Artshield's only big limitation is that it won't work with white backgrounds, so try to add a color layer to your white background before shielding it. Same for B/W images.
Other tips I can suggest for trying to protect your works:
Post at the lowest resolution you can: I go for 72 DPI, keeping bigger sizes and high quality files only for Ko-Fi rewards and clients' files
Add a noise filter: I always do this because I like the paper-like, grainy feel it gives to my art, but I read once it might messes with AI's scrapers. While I don't know if this is still true, it's worth trying it
Don't forget a big visible watermark (aside from the Artshield one)!
Hope this will help other strugglin artists, I never see Artshield suggested around, especially in posts about Glaze and Nightshade, so I decided to write this one.
Go and shield your art!

So, Tekken 8. I'm pleased with the direction it has fundamentally taken. In general, high profile fighting games have taken a far more welcoming approach towards newcomers, which is much needed and has thankfully gotten pretty good results so far: Street Fighter 6, for example, went lengths to provide a good, welcoming experience for new players, Granblue Rising retains its beginner friendly nature while expanding on systems to give it more depth at a higher level without stopping to be a fundamentally simple and 'easy' (but fun) fighting game with gorgeous flair, and Tekken 8 is following on the same road. It did this to some degree with Tekken 7, but Tekken 8 definitely goes a step further.
In general, Tekken 8 is much better geared towards user experience and perception than Tekken 7 was. I was a bit surprised to hear about friends that never really deal with Ranked in any game ever, tell me they were queueing up to climb the ladder. I started playing Tekken 8 a few days ago, and when I hopped into Ranked, I noticed small changes that carry a big impact with them in the UI, particularly in the loading screen pre-fight: What it shows.
So, in Tekken 7, you can see both players' Tekken Power, total wins as the character, rank, the results of their last 10 games, their 3 highest player tendencies, and personal match-up win and stage win rates.
Tumblr media
That is a lot of information, and you'd usually think "more information is better, right?", I think in this case it was a double edged blade, however: If you're a newer player who's gotten wiggity washed four games in a row now, with your 13 total wins and 9k Tekken Power (or Prowess, as it was in 7) and your B/C/C tendencies, and get matched up a guy with a rank you've never seen before, with over 10 times your Power, triple S+es, 2.3k wins, on a 7 win streak... Well, you're probably going to be more than a little intimidated before the game even starts. For a lot of people, understandably, this immediately becomes the moment of "holy shit, I'm about to get ragdolled", so you go in with a different mentality than you might go against someone whose stats you don't know. Some people don't get affected by this, but a lot of people do, especially curious people that are trying to get into the games and might get put off when they mentally lose before the fight even starts.
In contrast, the Tekken 8 loading screen offers less information, but it's a far better user experience:
Tumblr media
3 highest Tendencies, Tekken Power, Rank, and that's it. There's other stuff like console or PC, area, but it's otherwise a lot more laconic. And this works better! You just know their Power, their tendencies, their rank, and that's that. In the actual fight, you can see their current win streak, but no one can see if you or the opponent has 8 loses in a row. You don't know if they have 100 wins or 6000 wins, and so, you don't really think about it, you just go and fight. And if you lose, it's a world of difference to be "ok I got outplayed, that was some solid play from them" than it is to be "ok, yeah, they had ten times the amount of wins than I have lifetime games of Tekken, this was inevitable". So you can go and fight and win and keep playing. The user experience is much better.
I also really appreciate Arcade Quest: It's basically a short, very interactive tutorial: Instead of going through hours of dry tutorialing, a more inductive style like this is far better for newcomers, it's got basic, colorful characters, lots of tutorials peppered in throughout its run time, and a friendly coat of paint so you can get acquainted with the different systems at a nice pace: Your initial opponents are pushovers, letting you get a feel for movement and attacking, then you reach the third or so arcade, and your tutorial guy goes "hey, I heard they defend really well here, and they like opening you up with lows, let's learn how to deal with these" and you get your tutorials on how to open up opponents as well as dealing with lows, and then you fight the people in that arcade and it's mostly opponents like Law, Lili, Bryan, Dragunov, who have snake edges (strong low sweeps that offer good oki or launch for air combos, depending on whether its a counter hit or not) and their AI is specially geared to using these lows, as well as having better defense against highs so you use throws or lows. It's less a story mode and more a series of flavored tutorials, and I think it's really good for a game to have to ease players into the game's meatier systems.
The high level good ass Tekken is all there, it's just, there's a far more concise way of getting there for people that didn't grow up playing these games or had the raw gumption to deal with the sometimes Spartan fighting game community standards for onboarding. It's not a dirt road leading to the beach anymore, they paved it nice and easy so more people can get there, at their own pace, whether it be speeding there on a car, or through a nice leisurely stroll. It's something that I can appreciate both as someone who grew up in arcades playing fighting games with randos and regulars, and as someone that loves good, welcoming, efficient game design and wants more people to discover the joy of the fighting game.

Kazujun Tekken 8 fanfic me and my friend wrote and posted on discord :P
hope you guys enjoy it takes place after the events of Tekken 8. Jun tends to Kazuya's wounds.
ratings are normal, nothing dirty haha
Kneeling beside him, Jun’s fingers brushed over his cold, clammy skin, searching for any signs of life. Relief washed over her when she felt the faint pulse beneath her touch. Despite their tragic past and history, there was a deep and loving love between them that even she couldn’t deny.
Gently cradling his head in her lap, Jun’s eyes softened as she looked down at Kazuya’s scarred face, marred by cuts and bruises. Despite his fierce exterior, she knew there was pain lurking behind those steely eyes.
“Kazuya,” she whispered softly, her voice barely audible above him
“You’re going to be okay. I’m here now.”
His tired eyelids gently open, revealing the depth of his pain as he struggled to focus on her face.
“Jun,” he rasped, his voice hoarse with exhaustion. “I didn’t think… you’d come. That you were Alive”
Jun’s heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice and the timing she came. If only she was here for him sooner. Despite everything, he still looked to her for solace.
“I couldn’t just leave you here,” she replied, her voice filled with sincerity and melancholy. “Not like this.”
With gentle hands, Jun began to take him to a nearby camp to tend to Kazuya’s wounds, cleaning away the blood and applying bandages where needed. His muscles tensed beneath her touch, but he made no move to stop her, silently accepting her care.
As she worked, memories flooded Jun’s mind – memories of their past encounters, their battles, and the undeniable tension that had always existed between them. Jun had always blamed herself for his turnout and not being able to save him back when she first met him at the tournament …but perhaps she could now? Or so she hoped if he let her.
After Jun finished tending to Kazuya’s wounds. Exhausted as she was, she leaned back, her breath coming in slowly. Kazuya’s eyes met hers, and for a moment, the air between them crackled with tension even though no words where spoken between them. They were always like this, there was no need for that, they both understood each other without them, and there was no other they wanted to be with and fall in love with other than each other.
“Thank you, Jun,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t deserve your kindness.”
Jun reached out, gently cupping his cheek in her hand, “You do! You idiot you do!” Jun was crying now
“You’re not alone, Kazuya,” she said softly. “Not anymore.”

Jin & Xiaoyu in Tekken 8
This is a couple I’ve wanted for years and its safe to say Tekken 8 may just give them the room to be an actual couple once and for all. If you are obsessed with this fighting game franchise as much as I am and have been waiting as long as I have, Jin and Xiaoyu are a ship that in my opinion should have sailed loooooong ago. Xiaoyu is the sunshine and Jin is the one in need of that sunshine.
Their relationship seems to be more grounded and cohesive this time. No longer the delusional and obsessive teenager chasing the handsome and mysterious bad boy, but now as two young adults who respect one another whilst realizing and understanding underlying feelings and the role each plays in the other’s life.
Now before I get to it, I am fully aware that there are millions of people who are against them being a couple. “Oh Xiaoyu’s annoying, Jin doesn’t care for her, JinXiao shippers are delusional”, YADA YADA. Be that as it may, I am 100% behind Jin and Xiaoyu. This post is not for you!
Its shaping up to be Jin and Xiao as endgame and here’s why… Get comfortable because it’s a long one…
Starting off, Japanese men are not the most romantic and are considered shy in those kinds of contexts- as most Japanese people are. Japanese people are not big on pda and being straightforward. Commonly seen in manga and anime. Protagonist in most cases will literally do everything else in a story before worrying about their relationship- telling the girl or guy how they really felt. And it is usually the very last thing we get, if we get it at all. Creators/writers will hint at certain things subtly and you usually have to be aware of it. It’s a staple in Japanese storytelling and Tekken is no exception. It’s a fighting game people, so fighting is the main focus while something like romance is typically placed on the backburner.
With that said, Jin is yet another example of this. He crosses me as the type to be very loving but not in a showy kinda way. I’m certain Jun showered him with love and affection. Her very existence is love and affection. She is mama Kazama- Jin’s whole heart which was taken away from him very early. So being caring and affectionate is something we all know Jin is capable of doing. It’s just that his life took a course that changed him in a way that he needed to adapt to. The mishimas and the devil gene are no place for the kind boy who was raised on the almost remote island of Yakushima. Never having to deal with anything even close to his life after meeting Heihachi. I say this to not right any of his wrongs but to say that you can become a product of the things you go through in life.
Jin is capable of a lot but had to put a lot on the backburner because he was dealing with a situation that was thrown onto him. He didn’t ask for any of it but it was time for a boy to become a man. He no longer had Jun’s kind and touching words, but rather memories of her precepts and warmness to guide him, a grandfather whom he became to trust betrayed him in the worst way, and a father who could care less of his existence.
Xiaoyu on the other hand, a cheerful and caring young lady who wants nothing but to be there for Jin- someone she seen the good in and became a close friend to. She knows that Jin has only become the way he did to cope with the never ending pain and sadness, having to force away everyone and everything he cares about because he fears he would bring them nothing but harm. Jin was once a kind and sweet guy as Xiaoyu stated. Jin cares for Xiaoyu. He cares A LOT. I feel that he cares as much as he can in a way that he can given his situation. I don’t think I want the person I truly care for to be around me in moments were I lose control of myself either. Trust me, Jin has all the emotional components as the next person, he just doesn’t have the space to show it.
Xiaoyu isn’t an idiot. She understands this and catches what Jin throws. Jin’s life was a hard contrast to Xiaoyu’s fun loving, amusement park going life. Sometimes the best way to get through to someone is to communicate in a way they can understand and this time around she knows what has to be done.
And there are things that Jin is fully aware of. He knows that Xiaoyu will follow him to hell without a second thought. He knows she will come looking for him at the drop of a dime and wouldn’t even consider the harm she would face in pursuing him. HE IS FULLY AWARE of how much he means to her. Which is why he puts that distance between them. Why he disappears without a trace, why he keeps his hardships to himself. He knows Xiaoyu will go to bat for him quick. But he cares for her so much that he doesn’t want her getting caught up in his mess. Jin believes that he doesn’t deserve the love and consideration Xiaoyu gives him but he still cares. His self-hatred is what holds him back from believing he’s a proper member of society. The devil gene thoroughly labels him as an outcast who doesn’t deserve a second shot at life and he doesn’t try to hold onto that hope. So something like a relationship or friendship means nothing if you can never truly have it-and to him- as long as the devil gene exist, none of those things could ever be.
He feels as though he has to deal with everything on his own- end his family’s mess and end the bloodline. Jin always seems ready to give his life away because he feels the world would be better off without him. He looks at himself as an abomination, an existence not of this world. He invalidates how he really feels for what he thinks is appropriate for the situation. He calls it like it is. How can you smile, be a friend, or even have a relationship when you are a ticking timebomb and could ruin everything in the blink of an eye?
He's aware that Xiaoyu is going to give it to him straight, cut no corners. He knows she wants the best for him. He knows she’ll tell him that what he thinks of himself isn’t true. He knows that she can read him like a book. He knows she truly cares.
Their special interaction in Tekken 8 is long overdue. It shows exactly what their reunion should be. An abundance of emotions that look almost impossible to interpret. Xiaoyu- happy, relieved she found her man, but also with restraint trying to approach the situation another way, and there’s Jin- sheepish, unable to face Xiaoyu, not sure how she feels. Awkward but both push forward to paint a better picture together this time around. He knows she knows all the things he’s been doing and she knows that he knows but wants to move forward and be able to aid him in the fight. He’s always been much more softer in tone and demeanor with Xiaoyu. He calls the girl “Xiao”for goodness sakes, and in Japanese society people don’t usually do that unless they are really close and have a bond. She calls him “Jin”, no suffix just Jin. She even came out and said that "an exchange of blows can be revealing". Now if that's not obvious...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes love comes at the right time, and you have to be ready. The love was definitely there, feelings were definitely mutual, they were just shown very differently. In a lot of ways they just had to get themselves together and figure some things out. Besides the romantic part, Jin and Xiaoyu did a lot of growing up. I mean a lot. Look at those two. Xiaoyu LOOKS more mature. SHES A WOMAN NOW. Jin LOOKS certain in his actions and seems to have much more confidence and resolve. This is a man and a woman. I believe they are ready this time.
In a lot of ways Xiaoyu is what Jin needs- that reassurance, that support, that sunshine, that stick beside you type of thing.
And with Jun officially back, Jin’s life will definitely brighten up but with Xiaoyu included… That’s the ideal situation for me!!
I can go all day on these two but in conclusion, Jin and Xiaoyu are a pair that is definitely hard to come by and one of my favorites especially in games. It doesn’t make any since how long I have waited for an interaction between these two where they finally appear to be on even footing, on the same page, and know what they want.

how do you feel about claudio's change of heart in tekken 8? and generally his expanded background? is it anywhere close to how you envisioned his story going?
Claudio and Tekken 8
I'm a little disappointed. I like the idea of manipulative Claudio, and he really didn't get his moment to shine before reneging on it. That said, he does still have cards up his sleeve, since if Xiaoyu's approach doesn't work out, Claudio intends to do whatever he must to stop Jin.
Something I never minded in earlier games but am a little perplexed by now that we have full story modes, is that a lot of the interesting things in the Tekken story happen in the prologue text and not the actual games. Claudio's manipulative intentions and the audience's uncertainty over what he will do is great dramatic tension that only existed in the timeline between Tekken 7 and Tekken 8. That's basically resolved now, going into Tekken 8, which is just narratively weird to me.
I assumed he would be this more hard-to-pin-down character in Tekken 8 - dedicated above all to exorcising Jin and Kazuya and doing whatever he had to to get there. A kind of Javert character, villainous in his single-minded dedication to his version of morality and ridding the world of what he perceives to be the most dangerous threats; charming but with his sights set on eradicating evil and everyong else's wellbeing coming second.
Tekken 8 is setting out to pit people in teams against one another. We have Claudio, Xiaoyu, and Zafina working together, Lars, Lee, Jin, and Dr B, then Kazuya and .....Feng and Nina??? Don't get me started on the nonsense going on on Kazuya's side, but at any rate, each 'team' will have a different angle I'm sure, and Claudio's will be focussed on exorcism, after letting Xiaoyu attempt an empathetic appeal to Jin. In that sense, he's still loosely following what I hoped would be his story line. Perhaps there may even be space for his conflicting morals with Xiaoyu, since I'm sure Zafina will take Claudio's side in believing they have a duty to rid the world of these devils above all else.
Thanks for the ask!

The mistreatment and character assasination of Asuka Kazama
We can all agree that Tekken 8 has been the nail in the coffin for Asuka´s character development and treatment in general.
Asuka Kazama was introduced in Tekken 5 as an ambiguous Kazama style user, lover of animal, justice and nature.
Us veteran can agree that that we all thought at first that either Asuka was Jin´s little sister or a cousin of Jin Kazama.
After Jun´s disappearance in Tekken 3 and her reintroduction in the non canonical game of Tekken Tag, her spot was pretty much empty since even Jin, pretty much abandoned Kazama Style after the events of Tekken 3.
Now, we can start analazying who she was first and how her relevance to the story and future plans for her were pretty much obliterated.
Asuka was presented as a tomboyis girl that loved to make peace on her terms, even stopping gangs from killing each other.
She loved bicycles and wore a sports outfit. Her dojo was mostly destroyed and her father injured because Feng Wei was in a rampage trying to basically, level up his skills and demonstrate that he was the stronger warrior out there.
She joined the tournament, not knowing absolutely anything about Jin. Surprisingly, she had the same Kazama powers as Jun, healing and resurrecting (????) Devil Jin to the point of expelling the Devil out of Jin. After a ...well, "funny", embarrasing and kinda disgusting moment with Jin, people started to speculate A LOT. (you known, the boob scene)
Her popularity grew, opening new mysteries about the Kazama family and the part that they were gonna play in the future.
Fanfics blew up, edits, theories...
Now, pretty much in Tekken 6 they tease us that somehow they are related to each other. Jin went nuts with WW3... this is where the problem starts.
She had zero relevance to the story. You could think, oh "Lars is a new character, she can join with him to defeat Jin because she has this powers or for whatever reason because she just wants to stop him", but nope... she just had a few lines, boring ending that had nothing to do with it and then, gone.
Tekken 7 was focused on Heihachi and Kazuya mostly to the point that Jin was comatose THE ENTIRE GAME. So obviously, Asuka was out of the conversation too. She then got involved into this stupid rivalry with Lili which I learnt how to love because I find them very gay and I love my lesbian girlies. But that´s another topic.
A lot of veterans were thinking which type of relevance was going to have Asuka, since Jun was back, Kazuya was now the nº1 public enemy and Jin was having a crisis with his Devil Gene.
This is the point where her character and relevance died to never (probably) come back.
She just...joins the team with Lili, asks the type of family that she is with Jin which is basically non existen, they are part of the same clan... but not closely ralated, doesn´t even help exorcising Jin or Kaz and just when we thought she was going to be present in Yakushima only for her TO NOT EVEN BE THERE. Her powers??? which powers? Namco forgot about them, not relevant at all...
I just give up at this point. Fans are trying to cope with the fact that in Tekken 9 she will help exorcising Reina because her and Jun are the only ones with powers now but I´m telling you... nothing is going to happen. With Jun? obviously, she has gain even more popularity now been one of the strongest and best fighters and characters in T8 but Asuka? not development, nothing. Forget it, she won´t have any relevance in Tekken 9. It makes me really sad because they could expand the Kazama family with her father and Jun maybe joining or making a team to defeat Kaz or Reina but nope. Mark my words, Asuka won´t have relevance in the future.
They even made a inside joke with Hwoarang thinking that she was Jin´s little sister.
The level of disrespect that Namco had with this characters is astonishing. So yeah, I guess I only have left fanfics and that´s about it.
Thanks for my talk about the Horrible Murder... of Asuka Kazama.

TEKKEN 8 XIAOJIN MOMENTS HOW WE FEELIN
So, I'll confess I already knew about it because I saw the leaks a couple days ago but didn't say anything to not spoil other peeps - sorry fandom, I'm too broke to freely spend 60 bucks on a game I lost a lot of hype for.
Aside from that... I guess the loss of hype and zero expectations rewarded me somehow, because WE ALL KNOW that's the closest we'll ever have to a... whatever we want to call it, lol.
Anyway, THAT made me very happy!
(Not adding anything else since the game dropped yesterday, but if ya all want to discuss something I'll add the spoiler break and tags to possible future posts!)

“May the light of Sirius extinguish the shadows!”
Well someone’s been playing Tekken 8 a little bit too much.
This is unexpected. I just wanted a little sketch because *someone* is developing a little crush on Claudio Serafino, but I hated how it looked and so it ended up like this, and it still kinda looks pretty rushed compared to the other ones I’ve posted so far. Dude isn’t part of my 20-character portraits list, I just really wanted to draw him because I’ve been playing as him so much even though I’m an Asuka/Lili main 😂 (HE’S VERY PRETTY)
Saw this character on Tekken 7 before (and played him briefly on my brother’s computer just for kicks), but the moment I started playing T8 and heard him chanting in Italian I just got… I felt inhumane emotions in my body, thank you
I guess he’s one of my new boyfriends now (?)

Mini Fanfic #1186: Jailhouse Bros. (Tekken 8)
5:34 p.m. at Urban Square's Police Station.......
'Sound of a Cell Closing Shut'
Jin: (Sighs While Sitting on One Side of the Long Seat He's Sharing with Hwoarang) I knew I should've kept riding by and ignore you when I still had the chance.....
Hwoarang,: (Lounging Around on the Other Side of the Seat) Don't be such a drama queen, Kazama. I always ended up coming here more times than I can even try to count. You'll get used to your stay eventually.
Jin: (Rolls his Eyes) With you as my cell mate, my doubts are measurable
Hwoarang: (Glares at his Rival) Hey, I am treat to be around! At least compared to your smart ass.
Jin: (Raises an Eyebrow) Is that so? Then, why would a "Treat" like you, go out of your way to help me during the war?
Hwoarang: (Scoffs While Crossing his Arms Together and Turning Away) Isn't it obvious? You were literally the one and only key we have to save the world from pure chaos, so it's no brainer for any of us that we decided to work with you. It seems like you needed the help too considering how out of it you've been feeling lately.
Jin: ('Sigh') You're not completely wrong with that observation. Despite everything, It's honestly a miracle that I was able to pull through till the very end. I don't even think I'd still be here right now if weren't for you and everyone else's help, so.....(Smiles at Hwoarang a Bit) Thanks for that. Truly.
Hwoarang: (Lazily Waves at Jin) Yeah, whatever. Speaking of which.....(Slowly Turns Back to his Rival) How are you feeling now after you fought your old man alone? You didn't really......you know.....
Jin: No. I spared him. Risky move on my part, but I'd rather not continue the cycle of trying to kill one another any longer, no matter how much he deserves it. But on the bright side, neither of us have the Devil Gene anymore, so he probably won't do much other than trying to punch me really hard.
Hwoarang: (Snickers a Bit) I bet he ain't happy about that one bit-
A loud scream of a very long "NOOOO!" Is suddenly heard from outside echoing inside the very police station, ringing both of the boy's ears.
Hwoarang: ............('Clicks Teeth') Case in point. We're never gonna hear the end of it, are we?
Jin: (Rolls his Eyes) Considering how vengefully insane he is, I doubt we'll hear the last from him anytime soon. (Takes a Bit of a Deep Breath) But it's fine. I'll be ready to take on as many times as he wants to fight. I'm through running away from my problems.
Hwoarang: (Simply Nodded with a Small Smile on his Face) Good. (Starts Smirking Now) I'd hate to kick your grumpy ass again.
Jin: (Scoffs While Smirking Back at Hwoarang) Again? Last I checked, I've beaten you twice already. In the ring and on the road.
Hwoarang: Okay, first off, you only gotten lucky on that fight. Let's not sit here and forget that I was molly whopping your ass in the first half of the match, okay? And second, like fucking hell did you beat me in that race! I was on the lead ever since the very moment we started and you know it!
Jin: What I know is that I had far more of a chance of winning it all than you could ever hoped of accomplishing.
Hwoarang: (Went Back to Glaring at Jin) Careful, Kazama. We may be cooped up in this small cell, but you ain't too far off from another kicking session.
Jin: You're more than welcome to try. I'll dodge every. Single. One.
?????: Alright, that's enough outta you two for the night.
The duo turns to see the officer waking by their cell along with an older man with dreads, walking with a cane.
Officer: 'Specially now that you have this gentleman gracious enough to bail both your hides outta here.
Jin: (Instantly Recognizes the Old Man Along with Hwoarang) It's you.
Hwoarang: Old Man Smith!?
Leroy: In the flesh. I ain't the only one here to get you out though.
Leroy's puppy, Sugar, happily sticks her head out on the left side of the cell, letting out a bark, while the person carrying her, Xiaoyu, slowly sticks her head out as well. And yeah......she does NOT look happy in the slightest.
Hwoarang: (Stares at Xiao's Glare Towards him and Jin)............('Clicks Teeth') You know, I don't really mind staying in here for a bit longer actually-(Starts Walking Back ti his Seat)
Jin: (Immediately Grabs Hwoarang by the Back of Gi Collar Before Dragging him Out of the Cell) Come on, before she comes over and kill you in there.
Hwoarang: GAH- Hey!
Moments Later Outside of the Station.......
Xiaoyu: (Walking Out of the Police While Scolding her Two Boys with Her) ('Groans') I can't believe you two! We JUST ended a whole wide war against G Corp and yet here you guys are getting yourselves arrested over a dumb motorcycle race!
Jin: In my defense....(Points at Hwoarang Next to Him) He's the one who challenged me to race him in the first place.
Hwoarang: (Comically Glares at Jin) Oh, so we're snitching now then!? (Angrily Points at Jin) You accepted the damn challenge!
Jin: True. But I wasn't the one trying to kick me in the middle of the road.
Hwoarang: Well, maybe if you weren't hogging my space, I wouldn't hafta kick that much- (Felt Someone Slapping him on the Arm) ('Smack') Ow! (Turns to Xiaoyu) Why did you hit me?
Xiaoyu: (Pouts at Hwoarang) Because, Hwo, you can't go around kicking people you like in public. Especially if one of them happens to be our very own boyfriend!~
Jin: And here I thought you loved me.
Hwoarang: (Turns Back to Jin) Oh shut your trap already, Kazama! You know damn well I still love your ass to pieces! (Turns Away While Pouting and Blushing a Little) You just get on my nerves sometimes.....(Points at Xiaoyu) Same goes for you too, shortie!
Xiaoyu: (Smirks a Bit) Quit getting yourself and Jin into so much trouble and maybe I'll consider getting off of your case for the rest of the year.
Jin: Don't bother, Xiao. (Smirks as Well) Knowing him, it'll only last a few weeks until he ends up back in the slammer.
Xiaoyu: Nah. I'd give him four days tops at most.
Hwoarang: (Comically Glares at His Boyfriend) Hey, have some faith in me at least, you assholes!!
Xiaoyu: Bit what kinda partners we'd be if we didn't give you little hard time?~
Hwoarang: Normal ones maybe!!
Leroy: (Chuckles Lightly While Walking Sugar on a Leash) Those two never gave you an ounce of break, huh boy?
Hwoarang: (Groans While Facepalming Himself) Ohhhh you don't even know the half of it.....But hey, gramps?
Leroy: (Turns to Hwoarang) Hm?
Hwoarang: How's Master been doing in hospital? If you don't me asking.
Leroy: Baek's doing just as fine as he always been. 'Kept asking about you a lot these days, said you need to visit him more. I didn't tell 'em about you getting locked up today, so you don't have to worry on that front.
Hwoarang: ('Sighs in Relief') Thanks, gramps.... The last thing I wanna do is make him have another heart attack.
Xiaoyu: (Starts Gushing Up Over her and Jin's Boyfriend) Awwww~ You're still worried about your dad, Hwo?~
Jin: Guess the Street Punk really does have a heart after all.
Hwoarang: ('Scoffs') Oh piss off. I've always had a heart.
Jin: Then why don't you show it off that often?
Hwoarang: Cuz unlike you nerds, I have an actual reputation to maintain.
Leroy: (Raises an Eyebrow) Of being a hoodlum?
Hwoarang: (Forms a Cocky Smirk) The Strongest Hoodlum that ever lives.
Jin: (Gives Hwoarang a Deadpinned Look Along with Everyone Else) Right....
Xiaoyu: You're impossible sometimes.
Leroy: No wonder why your old man been stressing over you....
Sugar: ('Whimpers')
Hwoarang: (Comically Glares at Everyone) Again! Piss off, all of you!!

Annon-Guy: What's your stance on the character intros and outros in Guilty Gear StrIVe and GranBlue Fantasy Versus?
Even if you don't know the cast, can you get good impressions based on her animations and personality triats?
For example, Sol is very gruff and not extravagant as for his intro, he just calmly walks onto the stage while his outro just has him turn his back on the opponent and smirk at them while criticizing them.
With Bedman?, it features Delilah walking by herself until Bedman? appears behind and places a protective hand in front of her and in the outro, Bedman? raises Delilah up in a brother love like fashion with It's hand with Delilah smiling back at It.
In GranBlue Fantasy Versus, most of the unique interactions mostly occur from the 2P side as the 1P side is mostly them just walking in or standing in position as they get ready and even then, the 1P side has some good moments of characterization.
Like, for Djeeta, on the 2P side, she mainly talks about the opponent with Lyria and Vern, but on the 1P side, Lyria is clutching her dress in concern until Djeeta puts a reassuring hand on her hand before Vyrn and Lyria wish Djeeta luck. With their outro, it mostly features the three joining in a triumpht cheer and arm pump.
And even though 2B's dialogue is mostly reused, she has good animations that remain true to her series and express her character. Her Pod analysis' the opponent in both, but where her 1P side just has her walk in, her 2P side has her come out of her Black Box in an epic fashion to show you that a YorHa Android is not to be messed around with. Additionally, both Intros have her adress the fighters by their In-Game Titles, which is a good forth wall break without intending to be so, which a nice touch of detail. And while 2B's outro isn't too special, she checks in with her commanding officer, showing that 2B is a loyal and just soldier.
What do you think though? Got some characters that stick out in this department?
Give me a minute to read all this:
I'm gonna say that both Strive and Granblue (and well, MOST 2.5D animated fighting games come to think on it) suffer from "Talking head syndrome".
Phase 1: Character 1 walks on stage, does some dynamic thing by themselves.
Phase 2: Closeup of character talking.
Phase 3: Character 2 walks up and responds to Character 1.
Phase 4: Zoom out and fight starts.
It's been like this since Mortal Kombat 9, to be honest… and all it really does is illustrate the idea that fighting game characters in 3D have a very hard time in production to be animated in interactive dynamic ways.
I think Tekken 8 is literally the FIRST 3D fighting game to legitimately feature "clash intros" between rival characters ever since the days of Guilty Gear Accent Core and Street Fighter Alpha had their famous "2D clash sequences".
To give you some keen examples:
Tumblr media
Here's the BlazBlue equivalent:
youtube
The overall structure of modern fighting game intros puts emphasis on Player 1 initiating the conversation while Player 2 reciprocates.
(For a Strive example, Baiken's Intro is very long and dramatic, but if you switch to Player 2 side, Baiken's intro is much shorter... )
But in older games there was more of a balanced back and forth between characters.
Characterization is often predicated on the way a character's body language introduces them, though many intros are "bombastic", they are mostly tied to the character being introduced... that character does "not" interact with the other character physically until the fight actually begins...
Compare/Contrast Sol's Intro and Outros from previous games:
(By the way, it's not shown, but Sol bites the bullet, lighting it up with his flames, then flips it in to his weapon's gun chamber, spins it, and swipes his sword outward, creating a shockwave in his Xrd intro. This was a dual nod to an older intro where Sol would throw his sword in to the air and catch it as it came down in front of him.)

That's what I mean by "talking head syndrome"... it's just two characters talking, they aren't actually making contact with one another.
Mortal Kombat 1 features both characters clashing ala Injustice 2 style clashes, but in terms of a gimmick, it's a universal clash mechanic (meaning it isn't very unique or special between two specific character rivals, even if the dialogue is original between them).
Tumblr media
It's been a long time since Street Fighter Alpha 3:
Tumblr media
That's not to say that current intros don't ideally express a character well... it's just not on the same level as 2D fighting games of long ago that carried that dynamism.
What is "outstanding" in terms of character expression ranges from exaggerated sweeping movements to subtle adjustments to a character's hair as it blows in the wind.
Your mileage of opinion may vary on this.
For example, Ramlethal's outro where the Dog climbs on her and licks her face... while that's a cute freeze-frame moment, it's not QUITE as heroic-looking as Nagoriyuki's outro which shows his jacket flowing in the wind as he sheathes his katana as his mask opens to reveal his face.
Another example is Bedman's intros and outros in Xrd:
You will literally see Bedman flying around the screen with a white backdrop like he's a ghost out of a horror film... Delilah's outro with the Bedframe evokes a completely different set of emotions.
In terms of Granblue intros, while there are some good ones out there (like Vaseraga and Beelzebub), they are still very limited by the basic rule that "Character 1 does something only Character 1 can do, while Character 2 reacts to it".
While there are some personal quotes between rivals/friends, and they range from highly amusing to world-immersing, I often find that the broader "character expression" in these games lies within the music:
Take this song for example:
youtube
At first glance you might not know, but this is Zeta versus Vaseraga's Rival Theme (the intro builds up a bit quicker in-game though).
Even Sol and Ky have had rival themes for many years, if that's not obvious enough.
youtube
I'd say, getting a "full impression" of a character nowadays is a LOT harder than it used to be... and not just because of animation differences.
It's also heavily expressed in the story-writing: intros alone won't tell you a character's full story... especially if they are a complex character.
Young players might make the mistake of relying heavily on first impressions to judge whether or not a character "looks cool", but in most cases, game developers pull out ALL THE STOPS in order to achieve great things with their designs.
By and large, it mostly means that character design in fighting games is always very LAYERED... there's lots of minute details you will probably miss if you don't study the game carefully.
Are there "outstanding designs" out there? Likely true, but from my perspective, I favor the whole tapestry to simply looking at one square of the quilt.
It isn't JUST the fact that character A is cool and character B is also cool and their rival... it's so much more complex than that.
Character A has several rivals, there's an SS-class bounty on their head, and everyone's out to kill them, so they have unique intros with everyone (for a famous example).
Does that always get expressed well? Not always, but I think the attempt more than makes up for it.
Nowadays even fans are making fan-made clash intros!
I'll leave this here for you to ponder:
