Caught up with my the charioteer reread before the deadline when I should be sleeping. Shockingly enough, I have nothing interesting to add:

~ people talking in French so children won’t understand a conversation: relatable, but couldn’t bring myself to learn French properly (yet)

~ bb Laurie and his existential anxieties: so relatable

~ very amusing Laurie can’t spell psychology considering all the (now dated) psychology talk. I bet he thought he was so sophisticated

~ completely forgotten that Laurie being so uninhibited was that explicit

~ the Laurie/Landon scene still feels super oblique, but Ralph gives in far more quickly than I think I realised before? He drops Lanyon and allows himself to be Ralph in front of Laurie in a handful of paragraphs?

~ all the internal school hierarchy/politics stuff still feels like a foreign language I can’t be bothered to learn, except I should bc why do you care so much about these things, Laurie?

~ Lucy and Laurie's single mother of an only child dynamic is sweet. It’s okay to love and be affectionate!

~ what the hell happened to you, Michael Odell. There’s leaving your wife and child for unmentioned trespasses and dropping out of the face of the earth entirely. Laurie needed someone to be playful and silly with. As lovely as the single mother-only child dynamic can be, sometimes it’s too small a bubble; you need a connection with the outside world.

~ did you drink yourself to death over shame and regret over not having fought for your family, Michael Odell? Did you regret leaving just like that?

ETA: never fails to crack me up that Mary Renault describes Laurie as being very pretty when the book starts, goes on he'll peak at eighteen and then will go on to look "nice". Don’t want to get ahead of myself, but still. He just looked nice. Faint praise indeed :/

help I'm having feelings about ds1

#misc.txt #just barely restraining myself from making essay length posts. actually who am I kidding I have 2 in my drafts right now #this is my blog and I can be as cringe as I want here <3 #just. like. the way the ending (and the credits music specifically) feels so. cathartic.#the way the game gets you attached to npcs. the way that by the time you reach the end everyone's gone and now it's your turn #and like. idk if my experiences with the npcs are universal. I do tend to get attached very easily so I am biased #but now that I'm playing ds2. fs does what they do here deliberately I think. like some people complain they couldn't get invested in the #characters which is fair ig. but the way the game is hostile and actively deprives you of comfort #EXCEPT in these small little pockets. in the bonfires in the beautiful vistas in hearing the sound of That One npc's #slightly off but unmistakably friendly laugh.#deprivation makes the tiniest of gestures so much more impactful which for me got me so much more attached to npcs like seigmeyer/solaire #the way it's designed works. really well. imo. some people say it's shit which is why I'm reluctant to post the essays #but honestly some of the things ppl complain about regarding npcs are precisely what made the world feel so much richer to me #the way characters are presented reminds me of hk a little bit....which makes sense considering tc took inspiration from soulsborne #I get that handling characters that way isn't for everyone but. like. it's for me lol #idk!! ds1 is warm and comforting and bright and dark and oppressive and soul crushing all at once and it makes me feel so so much

sauropoda is a clade of saurischia that includes some of the largest dinosaurs we currently know of. if i'm going to submit something to you it's going to include these guys. they include some familiar faces like the brontosaurus. but the largest specimen within this group is a giant barosaurus fossil.

another good giant friend of mine is the colossal squid. why do they keep making bigger squids? because i love them. i love their huge eyes and big fights with sperm whales. i love their elusiveness. i love that we went "kraken?" haha very funny. cthulhu? sure guys. and they EXIST <333

and charismatic megafauna are cool and all but have you considered something a little smaller? maybe a Black Capped Chickadee? they tend to travel in groups or two or more when they're flying outside the nest and their call "chicka dee" functions as a warning call of increasing intensity depending on how many "dee"s they add.

and bugs? here's the thing: i have fought with Polistes metricus for years growing up. have they stung all of my loved ones? absolutely. do they also eat an invasive species of worm in my area? yes. and while these guys will sting you without a second thought and fly away laughing, they are a necessary evil. just like the birds, they stop for a sip of water. they are, i must admit through gritted teeth, an important part of my ecosystem.
