Trip And Fall Into What You Want

Yuu was nervous as she stood in front of her vanity mirror. Despite her best efforts she couldn't sit still. Her hands fluttered over her long blue dress, brushing out non-existent wrinkles and smoothing down the fabric, she flipped her hair over her shoulders, she touched up her already perfect make up. Even after all that was done, the impulse to fidget was too strong for her to sit still.
"What am I doing?" she asked herself, sighing at her reflection. She'd been looking forward to this for months, straining to get the attention of the beautiful pro heroes that she admired and now that she had it she was acting like a schoolgirl with a crush. Yuu pinched her cheeks, scolding herself. "Ryuuko doesn't want some silly school girl," she told her reflection.
That's right. Ryukyu went to the trouble of buying her this gorgeous dress for the occasion, it wouldn't do for her to act all nervous and fidgety! Yuu brushed a few loose strands of hair back into place and made herself sit still as she waited for her date to arrive. Her fingers were tight around her handbag, dying to play with the zipper or make sure she hadn't forgotten anything despite having done so twice already. Hanging out with Rumi was so much easier, since all she did was throw an arm around around Yuu's shoulders and drag her out to the bar.
Finally, after what felt like hours of waiting but was in actuality mere minutes, the doorbell rang. She sprang to her feet and took a few hasty steps forward before forcing herself to calm down and move more slowly. She artfully shook out her hair, blotted her lips, and put on as natural a smile as she could manage. She's spent all day thinking up greetings to use for this moment, but all her preparations flew out of her mind when she was actually face to face with Ryuuko.
Ryuuko's smile was elegant and kind. Her hand was soft as she reached out to stroke Yuu's cheek and her voice soft as she greeted her. "You look lovely, Yuu."
Such a simple compliment was usually something Yuu basked in, something she soaked up like water and preened for having received. Yet when the compliment came from Ryuuko she found herself blushing coyly. "Thanks."
"I brought you something, I hope you don't mind," Ryuuko told her. She held out a small box, opening it to reveal a pair of sapphire earrings.
"They're gorgeous!" she exclaimed as she reached out to take the box. She moved back to her mirror to put the earrings on, admiring how they looked on her.
Ryuuko smiled at her. "I hoped that you would like them. I can't help myself around things like this, but I wanted you to have it."
Yuu turned to her with a wide grin. "I love them."
"Good. I like having all my pretty things in one place when I can help it." Ryuuko reached out to her with a gloved hand. "Shall we?"
Yuu smiled, warmth spreading through her as she felt Ryuuko's fingers wrap around her own. "Yes, happily."
Yuu was practically floating when she entered the agency the next day. She smiled at everyone she passed, shuffled around paper work without it, and spent far too long daydreaming instead of working.
"What's got you so happy?" Rumi asked, grabbing her and pulling her into a headlock. "You've been daydreaming since I got here."
Yuu had learned that trying to escape Rumi's teasing was almost impossible, though she much preferred when it was directed at others. That didn't stop her from struggling in the other woman's hold though. "Why do you always do this?" she complained.
"Not always," Rumi corrected. "Only when you're spacing out, like now." She pulled away, grinning too widely as she finally let Yuu have her space back. "Why'd you even show up if you were just going to spend the whole time spacing out?"
"Why'd you show up if you were just going to spend your time teasing me?" Yuu asked.
"I showed up because I wanted to tease you," Rumi said with a robust laugh.
"Ugh! You're awful! Terrible! A menace!" Yuu scolded, trying to be heard over her friend's laughter.
"So, drinks on me tonight!" Rumi told her. "I wanna hear all about your date Ryuuko."
Yuu flushed a bright red as she nodded. "It's not like you'd leave me alone if I said no."
"Damn right, I wouldn't!" Rumi grinned. "Maybe try to get some actual work done while you're at it." Rumi wandered off and Yuu stuck her tongue out at her while she had her back turned.
They chose a bar that was a little out the way from their typical place. Yuu didn't want to run into their co workers if she could avoid it, but Rumi vetoed all her usual choices. Yuu was used to hole in wall spots that were cheap and empty except for a few men willing to spend money on a lady's drinks. Rumi preferred places that had a bit more in quality and company.
Rumi pushed her towards a booth in the back where it was a little more quiet. Not that she had any problems being heard over a crowd, but she knew that Yuu didn't like to scream to be heard. Once they had drinks and food, Rumi focused all her attention on Yuu. "Alright, tell me all about it."
Yuu sighed dramatically, dragging a finger along the rim of her glass. "It was amazing," she said. "The place was elegant and everything was so expensive I thought I was gonna die of shock."
Rumi waved a hand as she placed her drink back on the table, wiping her wipe on her arm after having downed half her the contents of her glass. "I don't wanna hear that stuff! Tell me about the important parts. I've had to watch you throw yourself in front of Ryuuko for months, don't leave out the good bits now."
Yuu blushed, taking a hasty sip of her drink to prolong answering.
Rumi didn't allow her the respite peacefully. The bunny hero scooted closer to her, leaning into her space and poking at Yuu's cheek. "You're blushing. That embarrassing, huh?"
Yuu threw her arms around Rumi's neck. "I was so embarrassed the entire time, Rumi! I'm sure that I made a complete fool of myself! She probably thinks I'm a silly, inexperienced, uncultured hick or something."
Rumi rubbed a hand up and down her back while she took another big gulp of her drink. "I'm sure it wasn't as bad as all that."
"My hands were sweating the entire time and I couldn't go five minutes without blathering on about nothing and I was so damn fidgety! It was the worst!" she complained.
"And what about Ryuuko?" Rumi asked. She plucked a few fries from Yuu's plate and put them in her mouth, continuing with her mouth half full. "You gonna talk about yourself all night?"
Yuu sighed and pulled herself away from Rumi, taking a sip of her drink. "She's the most beautiful, elegant, refined, cultured, respectful, mature woman I've ever met."
"I take it back," Rumi told her. "This is much worse. Talk about yourself."
Yuu huffed, finishing her drink in one go and glaring at her friend. "You're the one that asked."
"Yeah, well, I wasn't expecting you to be this much of a mess about it," she told her. "You're usually on top of things like this and the stories are good for a few laughs."
"Yeah, well, it's not a laughing matter this time," Yuu said. "Ryuuko's amazing. Too amazing. I'm starstruck."
Rumi slumped back in her seat, stealing a few more fries from Yuu instead of eating her own food. Yuu pulled the plate away, sticking her tongue out at her. "If you wanted something more simple," Rumi told her, "You should just go out with me."
"What?"
"You heard me." She looked over at Yuu as she brought her glass to her lips, pausing before taking a sip. "I'd date you in a heartbeat and you wouldn't have to be worried about being so nervous." She downed the rest of her drink.
Yuu let out a long whine. "Why would you say that to me?" she asked. "I'm already a mess because of Ryuuko!"
Rumi just shrugged. "When have I ever not said what was on my mind?"
Yuu shook her head and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. "I don't have time to fall in love with you when I'm freaking out about Ryuuko!"
Rumi grinned at her. "In love with me, huh?"
Yuu slammed her hands on the table as she stood. "I can't deal with this." She downed her drink, slamming the empty glass on the table. "I gotta go."
Rumi sat up, startled. "Hey, don't run away!" she yelled.
Yuu was too busy doing just that to stop now. She hurried out of the bar before Rumi had the chance to catch up. She was halfway down the street when she got a message on her phone asking if she'd like to do dinner again.
"This isn't what I need right now."
"This is just what I need right now," Yuu sighed as she wrapped her arms around the soft throw pillow and sank into the couch. Ryuuko's house was beyond gorgeous, Yuu expected nothing less, and her couch was more comfortable Yuu's own bed. "This isn't what I was expecting when you asked me to have dinner with you, you know."
Ryuuko smiled as she placed two wine glasses and a bottle on the table beside their food. "I don't like to eat out too often," she told her. "Plus you sounded a little stressed earlier. I thought it would be good for you to relax."
"Thanks," Yuu sighed.
Ryuuko sat beside her as she began to pour them both drinks. "Do you want to talk about what has you so worried?"
"You don't wanna listen to me complain." Yuu told her.
Ryuuko leaned back into the couch with her wine glass, giving Yuu her full attention. "I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to know," Ryuuko assured her. "I want to be able to help you, if I can."
Yuu sighed. "Stupid Rumi was teasing me about our date."
"That doesn't sound so bad."
"It wasn't, at first," Yuu admitted. "In fact, everything was perfectly normal at first, but then she asked me to go on a date with her!"
Ryuuko laughed. "That sounds just like Rumi. Did you say yes?"
"What?"
"To the date?"
Yuu's face was very red as she realized Ryuuko was teasing her. She reached out for her wine glass, holding it to her lips without taking a sip. She held it there while she tried to stop her blushing, pulling it away once she felt she could speak. "Not you, too. Is everyone going to tease me?"
Ryuuko laughed again. "I don't mean to tease. You and Rumi are close, right? Maybe I'm jealous."
"You don't have to be jealous of dumb Rumi!" she said. "She nothing like you."
"Then maybe she's jealous of me?"
"Impossible," Yuu told her. "Rumi's not into me."
Ryuuko took a long sip of her wine. "Does she usually ask people on dates that she isn't interested in? I can't I'm as close to her as you seem to be, but she didn't seem the type."
Yuu contemplated that as she took a sip from her own glass.
It was unreasonably late when Yuu found herself banging on Rumi's door. She knew for a fact that her friend didn't have to work the next day, so it wouldn't be too bad if she caused her friend to lose a little sleep. Plus, she was a little too drunk to care.
"The fuck?" Rumi demanded grumpily when she pulled open the door. Yuu had been leaning part of her weight on the door, not the best idea she would admit once she was sober enough to think of it, and the sudden loss caused her to tip forward into Rumi's arms. Her friend picked her up and pulled her inside, slamming the door behind them. "Do you know what time it is, Yuu?"
"No," Yuu answered. She squirmed in Rumi's arms until she was placed back on her feet, almost tipping over from the sudden location change, but Rumi kept hold of her arm to keep her upright.
"Why are you banging on my door this late?" Rumi asked in exasperation. "You didn't get dumped already, did you?"
"No! Don't change the subject!" Yuu told her.
Rumi rolled her eyes, placed her hands on her hips. "And what is the subject?"
"Are you in love with me?" Yuu demanded, glaring as she waited for an answer. Rumi stared at her for a moment before pulling Yuu into her arms and walking back toward her bedroom. Yuu squirmed in her hold. "Put me down."
"You're drunk," Rumi told her. "Shut the fuck up and go to sleep."
"Don't-" Yuu was cut off as she was suddenly dropped on Rumi's bed. "Wait!" Rumi tossed the blanket onto her as she climbed in the bed beside her. "Ask your stupid questions in the morning."
"You can't just-" Her objection was cut off as Rumi pulled her into an embrace and cuddled next to her.
"Go to sleep."
Yuu wasn't just going to let Rumi boss her around this way! She fought her way out of the blanket that had been dumped on her head, beat the pillow into submission, and made herself comfortable while she tried to remember her argument.
Yuu fell asleep.
Yuu had a pounding headache when she rolled out of bed and fell onto the floor. She'd never been a morning person, but her coordination was always twice as bad when she had a hangover. She pulled herself to her feet and noticed a glass of water and two pills on the bedside table. She never took care of herself so well when she went out drinking, so she knew Rumi must have been the one with such excellent foresight. It was only after she'd drained the glass and swallowed her pills that she realized she was in Rumi's bedroom and not her own.
It took until she'd stumbled into the bathroom, brushed her teeth with the toothbrush she kept there, and ran her fingers through tangled hair to remember what she was doing at Rumi's place, which caused her enough prompt embarrassment that she lingered in the bathroom long enough to wash her face. She did not want to face Rumi after having made a fool of herself last night. She was tempted to stay in the bathroom or hide back in bed, but Rumi would drag her out by the ankle when she got tired of Yuu's moping.
Rumi was at the table when Yuu finally stuck her head into the main room. She had a piece of bacon hanging from her mouth as she dropped a plate on the table and pointed to the chair. "Sit. I made breakfast."
Yuu took her seat with all the grace of a guilty child. "How'd you know I was there?"
Rumi's ear twitched in irritation. "Don't ask stupid questions, Yuu. I could hear you stomping around my house from a mile away."
Yuu pouted as she picked up a piece of toast and nibbled on it. "I thought you said I could ask my stupid questions in the morning," she mumbled.
Rumi smirked as her, taking her seat across from Yuu. "It's not exactly morning anymore, is it?"
A quick glance to the clock showed that it was well into the afternoon. She found herself wincing guiltily as grabbed her second piece of toast. The silence settled around them heavily. Rumi didn't look looked bothered by the silence, which only served to make Yuu more bothered as her thoughts turned end over end and she tried to think of something to say.
"You're thinking too hard," Rumi told her. "If something's bothering you, just say it."
Yuu sighed, devouring a piece of bacon to procrastinate giving an answer. "It seems kinda dumb now."
"What does?"
Yuu refused to answer such an obvious leading question.
"Did you know," Rumi said, "That in the last two months you've spent no less than two nights at my place every week?"
Yuu felt her cheeks heating up as she answered. "N-no, I didn't realize."
"Did you also not realize that I joing you on half of your patrols? That I always take you out after work? That you have a drawer in my bedroom and a toothbrush in my bathroom and I keep your favorites food on hand?"
"Um..."
"Because everyone else noticed," Rumi said. "Ryuuko actually asked me if we were dating and if it would bother me if she asked you out."
"Uh..."
"I told her you wouldn't have noticed either way," Rumi continued, "But that I wouldn't be mad if another attractive pro hero wanted to help me babysit you."
"T-that's uncalled for," she objected weakly.
"So anyway, we talked more this morning," Rumi told her. "I mentioned that you came over stupidly late last night and she apologized for having let you drink so much."
"You don't have to treat me like a child," Yuu complained. She folded her arms over her chest, which she knew wouldn't help her argument, but made her feel better anyway.
"That's good, because we came to a conclusion this morning," Rumi told her.
Yuu felt herself pale nervously. "What conclusion?" she questioned.
"Even though you went through all the trouble to get Ryuuko's attention, you seemed pretty convinced that she didn't like you at all," Rumi said. "And you didn't do anything to get my attention, and you don't even seem to pay attention to the fact that you have it, despite taking advantage of it all the time. So we wouldn't mind if you wanted to go ahead and date us both, and we wouldn't mind if you decided to pick one of it, but it's pretty clear you wouldn't be doing either if we didn't beat you over the head about it."
"Um... I... didn't think of it that way," she said quietly.
"I noticed," Rumi told her. "But talking to Ryuuko about you lately, I rather like her. And I like you."
"It can't be that easy," Yuu told her.
"Why the hell not?" Rumi asked. "It's as easy as saying yes or no."
Yuu watched her for a long time, looking for a trick or some fault in the logic, which she didn't find. So eventually she just answered, "Yes."
"Good," Rumi nodded. "Ryuuko will be over later to have dinner with us."
"That's it?"
Rumi rolled her eyes as she stood up, stacking both their plates and carrying them into the living room. "What more do you want, a medal?" Rumi questioned. "You already got to girlfriends, Yuu. Be happy already."
Yuu was still a little too shocked to be happy, but later, when she was sitting on the couch between Rumi and Ryuuko and the truth finally had the chance to set in, she realized that she was very very happy.
