fic rec friday 21

welcome to the twenty-first fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.

1. Most Artists are Messy by @shipsgalore

Lance is drawing a complicated flower on the base of Keith’s wrist and it makes his lips pull up into a smile despite the panic. They’re always flowers when it comes to Lance. He uses them in everything he does, and usually doesn’t even know he’s doing it. Keith can count on one hand how many times the doodles on his arms haven’t been of flowers.

i love this one because keith & lance are just blatantly and clearly autistic. it’s wonderful. it’s sweet and fluffy and it’s a modern au, which as y’all know is my jam, and the last few paragraphs do this specific thing with sentiment repetition that genuinely gets to me every time

2. Be Alive With Me Tonight by @caesaria [EXPLICIT] [ABO]

When the Blade of Marmora requests assistance on an information gathering mission, Lance and Keith go undercover as a bonded alpha and omega pair. At first, it seems like this is going to be more like a vacation than a mission – right up until everything falls apart and they realize how unprepared they really are. Now, Lance and Keith have to fight to not only survive, but to make it out together. They’ll have to rely not only on their skills as Paladin, but the bond they’ve created and nurtured between them.

okay i gave this one the explicit warning bc there are chapters that are explicit, but tbh the scenes are skippable if that’s not ur thing. now this fic is an EPIC. truly. its a quarter million words and the plot is breathtaking, the worldbuilding is iconic and the romance is like HOLY SHIT. this is a novel, and better yet its a KLANCE novel, so. highly recommend if you have a day or two to read.

Lance is always getting flowers for Keith, so Keith decides to return the favor--with a little help, of course.

keith is hilarious here. just in general but here especially and i love him. he wants to pamper lance so so badly and hes so straightforward and earnest!! and allura’s character in here is also excellent. i will leave u with this one line from the fic that made me laugh it loud: “ The next day, the sun rises to Keith Kogane, dressed all in black (that’s all that was clean, okay?!), loitering around in front of Alluring Blossom, the 5-star-rated “I’ve never had such a delightful bouquet delivered to me in my entire life!” flower shop of a woman named Allura Altea. Keith automatically trusted her because he loves people that also have alliteration in their names. “ king. love him

4. here it comes by rideahorse

Keith watched a lonely droplet of water fall from Lance’s soaked bangs, curving a path over the bridge of his nose and then pooling—almost teasingly so—at the bow of his lips.

“I feel like I won, for some reason,” Lance said quietly.

what have i told yall about fics from 2016!!! this fic made me SMILE and im not usually a fan of like senior year of high school fics but holy shit!! holy SHIT!! this fic had me smiling and kicking my feet and losing my mind. i will leave u with the note i put on my bookmark (spoiler warning):

a couple things: 1. “lance is a bad influence” and “lance is a pretty princess (tm)” are god tier tags so thanks for that 2. keith with a tongue piercing. must i say more. 3. i miss keith gyeong that was an excellent era 4. the couple tattoo moment had me taking a Moment 5. here’s how i imagine the aftermath of this: shiro: i saw u ditched prom. are you okay? keith: yeah actually! lance convinced me that we have to have a wild final night, so we went to a High School Party (tm), i decked a guy for lance and your honour, we panic drove away, went skinny dipping in a pool, got caught, ran away naked for two blocks, went to sonic in another town, got matching tattoos, fucked in the backseat of my car, and watched the sunrise :)) shiro: shiro: shiro: shiro: i’m sorry. what were those last parts keith: yeah i know you really like sunrises we probably should have invited you :// but it was kind of an us thing i’m sure you understand :) shiro: KEITH

anyways i laughed

5. if silence was a song by @angstinspace

“It’s … Your show is on so late at night,” Keith tries to explain, as if Lance didn’t know this already. “I guess I was just wondering why that is.”

A crackling silence answers him, and Keith’s stomach sinks. Did Lance hang up? Keith can’t exactly blame him.

But then he hears Lance make a noise––a short huff of breath that might have been either an impatient sigh or a quiet laugh … Keith has no clue.

“That’s the reason you’re calling? To complain about my time slot?”

or, Keith starts anonymously calling Lance's college radio show and develops an unexpected crush.

@catnippackets did a comic of this i believe, and it literally never leaves my head. yall know the trope where one person gets a phone call and halfway through they sigh wistfully and say “god i wish you were here” and then the other person smiles so viscerally it can be felt through the phone and they say “look behind you” and theyre THERE?????? that makes me lose it every time. i love this fic

okay first of all hell yea i can fight ppl on the internet with facts and logic.

anyways 1) i dont hate focallette/neuvifuri because i headcanon them as familial (where tf did i say that btw 💀) i hate them because the shippers are annoying, they look borderline related and almost every fanart i see makes furina look like a goddamn child throwing a tantrum while making neuvillette look like the adult he is. dont you think thats a little bit weird. 2) dont you dare bring sheith into this i made multiple posts explaining why theyre not problematic like at all, but i’ll say it again theyre not canonically brothers, adopted or related, the people working on the show loved sheith more than klance and were hinting at them so much, all you have to do is do one fucking google search. also im not calling furillette a proship unlike the furillette shippers calling wriolette a proship. and again i dont hate furillette because of a hc i have thats not what i said at all. i just said i would like to see more people who hc them as familial. 3) i want the shippers to block me and to not interact so i thought the best way to do that was to tell the shippers directly. also they dont have a problem w tagging other ships while bashing them so i dont see the problem. but if you really think thats a dick move ill remove them, i just dont see the issue but maybe thats because im a petty bitch. i am just sick and tired of ships i like be bashed by (mostly m/w) shippers and having to defend what i like while for no reason people who like m/w dont have to so i decided hey i want to be toxic too im tired of being passive

Hello, thank you so much!!!!! i appreciate it :)

hmmmm let me think, im not great at talking nor am i great at giving advice so im just going to say some things that worked for me:

I'd say the main thing is to draw things you enjoy, things that will make you happy. it’s really important to practice and draw a lot if you want to improve, so if you’re drawing things you enjoy you’ll want to draw more often.

Try to understand anatomy. You can do this by looking up references for the poses you want to draw. Don’t trace them, rather try to understand them and use logic. The width of the shoulders, where the neck connects and how long it should be, how big the head should be in relation to the body... Pay attention to yourself in the mirror also. how much space is there between your eye and your ear, how it varies with the angle of your face, how much space between your mouth and chin and your mouth and nose, where your eyebrows begin and where they end, etc.

Very important especially at the beginning, even when you’re just doing screenshot redraws, is not to just draw what you see, first draw what’s underneath and then lightly erase it/use a different layer so you can add the clothes and hair on top. So basically draw them naked first lol.

Use guidelines for the face and the body. Maybe you don’t know how to use them at first, but you don’t have to follow them strictly. i mainly use them to make sure the eyes are leveled, the nose is in the middle of the face, the shoulders are the same width and the torso is centered. follow them in a way that’s useful to you.

Lastly, do not focus on developing an artstyle. i wish someone had told me this bc i was trying soo hard to find my artstyle, i thought i wouldn’t be a real artist until i had one, but the thing is it’ll come naturally. it just happens. so don’t focus on always trying to do things the same way bc you feel like that’s your style, and just do them in a way that feels fun. don’t be scared to try new things.

You can check out this tag. There are also great content creators on youtube that give art tips sometimes, like drawingwiffwaffles and samdoesarts, so i suggest you look them up if you haven’t already!

1. WANGXIAN from The Untamed

i know this is the obvious one but like. gosh. will you look at them? i can’t fucking stand them they’re so annoying but they’re also like THE only pairing who have made me ride or die. Like if these two bitches aren’t in love it fundamentally changes the story tonally and plot-wise, and that’s something i can’t say for a lot of other media?? like a lot of other things work either platonically or romantically but if these two aren’t fucking then the entire story literally can’t work. I love it. everyone cry with me about the sheer DEVOTION in their eyes

2. PINGPANGXIE from Dao Mu Bi Ji

Ok I will admit that I did not start out this show with an OTP. like i knew pingxie was a THING bc obviously but i was like eeeehhhh i don’t really care whether they’re platonic or romantic. But then @jockvillagersonly was like “hey u know that pangzi can be in there too right” with their amazing iron threesome fics and i was like “FUCK ME UP” and jumped on the bandwagon. I literally love them. Only canonical Shakespearian couple that really does it for me, you know? what it is, I can’t say. Is it the fact that they’re both disaster bi asexuals who never want to fall in love because that’s just Too Much Work? Is it the fact that they’re both Dumb As Hell? Is it “I love nothing in this world so much as you”? Who’s to say.

4. KLANCE from Voltron: Legendary Defender

I KNOW. OK. I GET IT. IM SORRY. IM NOT PROUD OF IT. IM NOT SAYING THAT ITS GOOD. IM JUST SAYING THAT WHEN THEY SAID KLANCE WAS CANON KING, THEY WERE RIGHT. KLANCE IS CANON KING. OK???? FUCK. GET OFF MY DICK.

5. THARNTYPE from Tharntype

THEY’RE FUCKING MARRIED!!!!!! OK???????? i will admit that this show has flaws. like, a lot of them. are these two toxic as fuck half the time? yes. neither of them know how to behave like actual people. i literally need Type to learn how to calm his shit down, and i need Tharn to learn that he’s allowed to be angry at his bf when he’s being a dick, and that he doesn’t constantly have to fix everything. but also the chemistry between these two? FUCKING MAGNETIC. there’s something very sexy about them being allowed to fuck on every available surface and the audience just having to deal with that. and the shower scene in season 2?? literally one of the hottest things that has ever been filmed. MewGulf did it again. 10/10

Hunk anon here. Fandom content is too good and the show content negatively impacted our memories so we just make our own content that would make sense.

Most of our content is Klance based and it’s normalized to see him as Lance or Keith’s soft teddy bear love counselor . He’s not meant to be center staged in those stories so people just characterize him in the easiest way possible. It’s hard to write him as a rude ass like he is in canon bc we don’t want anyone to be rude to Lance (anymore) or Keith and it’s hard to reconcile what we see in fanon with the reality of canon. Fanon Pidge is the same way. She’s a good hearted young girl who will apologize if she goes too far and tries to make an effort with her friends because this is the first friend group she had in her life. Canon Pidge? Hard pass.

I do wish fanon content explore more of the friend part of Klance’s rival to friends to lover relationship. Despite the fuckery with some of Keith’s s6-7 characterization (imo Keith is the most inconsistent character written on the show) Keith and Lance have a natural development as partners and you can actually see movement in the way their relationship changes. They could be one of the best duos if given a chance. Mainly cause theyre both on the same wavelength and brain length as each other haha.

But man, if my Hunk thoughts are explosive I don’t think anyone is ready for what I have to say about Shiro.

Fanon Hunk and fanon Pidge are amazing – and I hope they continue to be depicted in fanfics as they have been because that's the way it should be.

I love Hunk as the peacekeeper. I love to think of his character as the guy who would, unironically, be the one to say "seriously, can't we all just get along?"

I love Pidge as the one who noticed everything and uses that knowledge to play harmless pranks or to tease her friends. And I love, moreover, when she is portrayed as the one who will take your secret to the grave if she sees how serious it is.

I love that they are both portrayed in fanfiction as being so stubbornly and viciously loyal, the only time they become rude or inconsiderate is in defense of their friends.

Obviously, the still have their flaws, and those flaws should not be overlooked in good writing. But if they were accurately portrayed as their canon selves in fanfiction, it would be so bleak you might as well tag it "Major Character Death."

I agree about portraying friendship first. Not just for klance, but for literally all relationships. I remember a line from a book I read as a kid where the character said (something along the lines of) "I want to be with someone I like and love." I didn't understand it at the time, because I thought it was a given.

In reality, there is a huge distinction between these two, in terms of a relationship. That's why the fics that portray a klance friendship first – and an accurate and believable build towards romance – are the ones that stick with me. Because your partner should be your favorite person. They should be the one you want to spend time with – not just in a romantic or sexual setting. They should be the one you want to be with just because you like being around them, and you feel comfortable in their company. This is a huge reason why I don't ship a lot of heterosexual couples in movies and TV, because they often don't get the portrayal of friendship first. They go from the "hating" stage to the "love" stage with nothing in between. But that in between stage is literally the most important one, and it definitely should not be ignored. (And it's yet another thing that Brooklyn Nine-Nine gets right).

And...you brought up Shiro. People have commented on him before, so I'd guess there might be something that comes of that...

What has got you so angry anyway? They tagged all the ship posts so you wouldn't have seen them anyway. Do you just hate Kinkade in general? Because you seem to feel more strongly about this than James Griffin. Are you so against us finding comfort in the few dark skinned characters

bestie nobody i follow ships james griffin with either keith or lance bc they have taste and like, morals. rest assured if i came across anybody that still shipped that wretched ship i would block them instantly and loudly complain abt it, but thankfully that hasn't happened to me..ever.

notice how i erm...am not saying...that ryanxlance is bad, i just dont like it. i dont know anything about kinkade so no i dont dislike him at all, i never even watched the seasons he was in. i just dont like the ship bc i havent seen anything that would garner my interest in it, and because of my relationship with klance i dont rlly enjoy seeing either lance or keith with another person anyway. but im not angry at all gfsdkgsh not to like pull up evidence in favor of myself or whatever but i did say when someone asked that the user wasnt doing anything wrong by reblogging the ship, i just dont like it. i promise yall me and that user are fine we literally just jokingly interacted if u bothered to check

klance x pirates of the caribbean

bc apparently when i'm upset i listen to newsies live and think up weird klance aus

in my head this could go one of two ways:

keith and lance as will and elizabeth

keith and lance as jack and will (i'll explain later)

a lot more under the cut bc i got a bit carried away...

if it follows the canon love story i picture lance as will and keith as elizabeth. (i could see it the other way around bc keith could be the orphan pirate boy but i’ve written too much to go back now).

when they were young, keith was on a ship with his father and he spots lance on a piece of driftwood. they save him ofc and keith spots a jewel necklace around lance's neck. he takes it and later has it fused in the hilt of his mother's knife that is now his.

keith hates being the governor's son with a passion. he hates the formality of it and how restrictive it is. lance is the weaponsmaster's apprentice (that's how he gets good with a gun) and he is always under appreciated! give this guy some recignition!

anyway, he has been silently pining for keith for ages. little does he know, keith kind of likes him too. a lot of mutual pining has been going on for longer than either can recall.

anyhoo, pirates invade the town and kidnap keith. he puts up a fight but in the end he's outnumbered and taken aboard the ship as leverage. he says his surname is mcclain bc it's on his mind. wink wonk. captain of the evil pirates is zarkon and when the pirates who kidnapped keith hand him the knife he realises it is the jewel that can break their spell. since keith uses lance's surname, he also thinks it is keith's blood they need to finish the ritual since lance's family are the one's who sent the jewel away with lance. but it's not. obvs.

lance, after saving a baby, watches keith get taken in horror and tries to call out but is knocked out before he can act. once he's awake he hears that there's a pirate who was caught in the dungeon. that's allura. yes, eccentric captain allura is a choice i am making.

lance manages to break her out of jail, thinking she is one of the evil pirates and he can persuade her to help him. she is not but decides to help him anyway in an attempt to retrieve her ship 'the voltron' from zarkon. the two of them go off on a quest to save keith.

meanwhile, hunk and pidge are guarding keith. they are new recruits to zarkon's crew after their other crew threw pidge out when they discovered she was a girl (silly pirate superstitions). hunk went with her. they are easily persuaded to help keith bc zarkon's a meanie and promise that they'll help him out when they make it to land.

lance and allura arrive on an island and find coran who is allura's closest friend and ally. shiro is also there. he has a peg arm (is that a thing? idk it's a weird mechanism but it does the trick). coran explains that the ship keith is on is cursed and they will be going to the mysterious isle of daibazaal to break the curse.

they get there and watch zarkon attempt to break the curse using the jewel (which he pried out of the blade) and keith's blood. nah, it don't work. they still turn into creepy looking skeletons in the moonlight. damn. he threatens keith and then all hell breaks loose bc lance shoots him. it would have definitely killed zarkon but he can't die bc... the whole undead thing, and in doing so all lance does is reveal their position. they fight a bit, as you do. keith gets hold of a sword and kills three evil pirates in about five seconds. lance falls a little bit in love with him.

in the midst of the battle, lance makes a deal with zarkon that he will stay if keith and the others can go (this now includes hunk and pidge bc they helped keith get free). lance is stripped of visible weapons and zarkon agrees to break the curse immediately. lance cuts his hand and drops the jewel into the chest.

then he grabs keith's jewel-less knife from where it lies beside the chest. zarkon, distracted, doesn't notice until the blade is buried in his gut. he dies. keith and the rest act immediately and kill any other pirates who don't surrender. keith kills an evil pirate about to shoot lance.

they return keith in exchange for allura, coran, shiro, pidge, hunk and lance's pardon. keith expresses his wish not to be governor in the future and allura invites them on 'the voltron' ship with her since she reclaimed it from zarkon. keith and lance then have a moment where they thank each other for saving each other's life. keith thanks lance for coming after him and lance confesses. it's all very sappy and they kiss for ages.

lance is still will. i stand by everything i said about him in the previous version. his parents caused the curse to endure and sent him off. but instead of keith finding him, it's allura. she's the governor's (in this case, alfor's) daughter. she takes the jewel and keeps it as a necklace. lance and allura are more like besties but they're not really allowed to see each other because of their differing classes.

keith arrives and escapes the navy. hides in weaponsmaster’s shop. lance tries to fight him but he’s not as good with a sword as he is with a gun. lots of sassy banter where lance is tryna be noble and keith doesn’t care for it.

anyway, we sort of know what happens. allura gets kidnapped and uses lance's surname bc they had a conversation beforehand. lance stresses, hears about a pirate they captured, assumes it's one of the evil ones he can persuade to help him.

but instead he gets keith who he met earlier. in the time they’ve been apart he’s got himself landed in the dungeon. and he’s notoriously one of the most stubborn, grumy pirate captains in all the seven seas.

he's overall unimpressed with lance as a person and with his plan, only agreeing when he realises he might be able to get his ship, this time called 'the red lion', back. lance decides he's going to prove himself to keith. he doesn't know why he's so offended by a pirate's opinion but he just is. hmmm...

they pick up shiro and coran, pidge and hunk promise to help allura out yada yada yada and they start making their way towards the island.

they run into lotor and his crew (acxa, ezor, zethrid etc) who are unrelated to zarkon and that whole... thing but they're your typical pirates and they want their stuff. which is annoying af bc allura is missing and they have somewhere to be thank you very much.

they put up a good fight. lance has plenty of opportunities to impress keith with his pistol skills. consider keith very impressed and mildly enamoured. but he doesn't do feelings so he stuffs them down inside him as you do. they win and move on. afterwards keith asks lance where he learned those moves and lance tells him stories of his time in the weaponsmaster's workshop. they bond.

they get to the island and find allura. they fight and keith and lance save each other's backs too many times to count. lance has a revelation (inconveniently mid battle) that he actually really likes this. this is fun. this is exciting.

then keith fucks up. he says that he'll hand lance over if zarkon gives him his ship back. lance is fucking fuming and feeling very betrayed and hurt bc he actually felt like he was getting somewhere with keith. keith gets what he deserves though bc zarkon dumps him and allura on an island and takes lance away.

while they're on the island allura knocks some sense into him regarding his life generally and lance specifically. she tells him loads of cute lance-as-a-teenager stories and keith feels awful. he helps her light a signal fire using some rum he has on his person.

they spot the ship alfor sent to find allura. they persuade them to go to where lance and the rest of the crew is. keith tries to act like he's on zarkon's side when they get back to the cave and then he takes one of the cursed jewels so he's now immortal. aha! while this is happening allura has infiltrated zarkon's ship, 'the red lion', so shiro, coran, pidge and hunk can be freed.

allura then frees lance from where they were keeping him in the hull. lance runs to where keith is. they share a look. keith cuts his hand and throws the jewel to lance who does the same and drops it into the water. the curse is broken. keith goes to grab zarkon's sword so he can kill him but zarkon grabs him by the throat. lance shoots zarkon in the side before keith can pass out. he runs to keith who has collapsed. keith apologises and thanks him and promises not to betray him again. lance laughs, says he better not and helps him up.

they return allura safely in exchange for their pardon. keith asks lance to join the crew of 'the red lion' and gives him loads of reasons that are really just disguised compliments. safe to say lance kisses him senseless and they run away together, sailing off into the sunset. bc. klance. there's got to be a sunset somewhere.

hope you liked my what-were-meant-to-be-headcanons-but-just-became-plot-summaries!! i promise i’ll post some general pirate voltron headcanons unrelated to this au at some point. i wrote a pirate au piece for klance au month on my ao3 so some might be related to that?

I said helpful. anyway here are our instructions. very straightforward. we shouldn’t have to dance in fancy suits as we scan the room for danger, or hide pressed together in a shadowy recess near the ballroom as we eavesdrop on a bad guy, or make out to pretend we have a reason to be there when a guard catches us

keith: u sound disappointed

lance: what is the POINT of being a spy if it’s not an excuse to make out with a hot helpful guy

lance: well that’s it. good job. barely an hour. no dancing, no pressing close together, no making out. I didn’t even have to use my fake name

keith: it’s actually not over yet
