what gets me is whenever any of these people says not to vote, and you ask them what the alternative is, they usually throw some tantrum about how it shouldn't be their job to fix this country and they're not expected to know (or start calling you a neoliberal or a bootlicker lmao) and i just. i don't get that? not voting, especially in the current climate, is a big deal. i don't think it's unreasonable to ask anyone who advocates for that what the alternative is. i'm not expecting you, online leftist, to magically know how to fix everything. i am expecting something from you if you're gonna tell me not to vote, especially when we both know that helps the gop. like, how dare we ask them to defend this big choice they're telling us to make?
their position boils down to helping trump and the republicans but any time you remind them of that they get upset. what is the alternative? what plan do they have? it would be one thing if there was another option that they'd come up with, but they haven't and don't seem interested in doing so. mutual aid and organizing is only going to take us so far and it'll be a hell of a lot easier to do it with biden in office than trump
The whole "it doesn't matter who's president/in charge of the government because mutual aid and organizing is the only valid way to do community engagement" is the leftist version of the Brexit nutcases who, and I swear I am not making this up, argued that it was fine if the UK left the EU trading sphere/single market/customs union with nothing to replace it, because "Britain is a nation of farmers and can grow food in our back gardens!!!!" Yes, because you're so devoted to your stupid ideology that you think the large-scale collapse of society, a major world power, a western democracy, and everything else will have no effect, and you can just do your little Facebook mutual aid groups and happily shout on Twitter at anyone who disagrees with you. Never mind the fact that this would obviously and immediately harm vulnerable people the most and that nobody, not even the Online Leftists themselves, actually wants to live in the Violent Revolution Total Anarchy World they masturbate to. Maybe this makes me a neoliberal corporate shill, but I'd rather that the world got better, instead of worse. I would actually prefer that myself, my friends, my family, my whole life, the whole country, and the rest of the world wasn't sacrificed on the Great Revolution Altar, but I shouldn't worry. We have mutual aid. At least as long as a) you have never said anything the Online Leftists even slightly disagree with, since they're sure as hell not the kind of people I would trust to have my back in any large-scale societal collapse, and b) I guess they'll all be growing food in their back gardens too, rather than using any of those dirty "government" or "society" things to supply their basic needs. We're saved! No need to worry. Bring on the anarchy.
Aside from the fact that Online Leftists, as I have said before, think that moral action begins and ends with posting the Right Opinions on social media at the correct timeframe and any other action or engagement with a flawed system or basic reality is heresy, they don't like being challenged -- i.e. "if we don't vote, then what do we do?" -- because a) it questions their authority as supreme arbiters of morality, and b) it means that there should actually be an action in place of cutting out something so consequential as voting, which likewise clashes with their "everything will be fixed by Magical Thinking" viewpoint. They don't want to be asked what to do in place of voting, or in anything at all; they want to think their correct thoughts and judge anyone who doesn't, regardless of how logically incoherent these things are or the inevitable outcome of those decisions, because nothing bad is ever their fault, or even the Republicans' fault, or anyone else at all except for the Democrats and/or "the West." I mean, yeah, if they're going around to preach the Don't Vote Because It's Actually Evil gospel, it's the bare fucking minimum to expect that they have something to offer in return besides Ye Olde Bolshevik cosplay fantasies. Since they don't, they get tetchy when you point that out.
Also, while I know it's the social media fashion that everything has to be the worst thing ever and we have plenty of the "Biden is also a genocidal fascist but I guess vote for him or something" utterly-minimum-standard posts going around, I will point out why that rhetoric is a) wrong and b) unhelpful. (Not that I expect it will make a single difference to anyone who has to get their internet cred by yelling about how Biden is a fascist, but still.) No, Biden is not a fascist by any logical definition of the word, you would have to do a lot of work to convince me that he is personally genocidal beyond what is demanded of any post-1948 American president who exists in an extremely complicated international sphere with long-standing alliances (such as, yes, with Israel) and indeed not quite a bit more progressive than literally every one of his predecessors, and it makes those actual words useless. If you claim that "Biden and Trump are both genocidal fascists," you are utterly effacing those categories as any kind of critical or useful distinction. You can't argue for any difference, you can't point out policy essentials or nuances, you can't make the most basic of empirical observances or come to a judgment on whether any part of that statement is true, because language has been deliberately stripped of meaning and used to score Cool Internet Leftist points. How can we explain what fascism or genocide actually are and what to do about them, if it's just what you call everyone as a matter of course whenever they disagree with you? You can't. That's the point.
Once again: I strongly disagree with the idea of just giving Israel/Netanyahu a blank check to keep committing atrocities, but I also need to repeatedly point out that Biden isn't doing that. His initial unconditional support of Israel after October 7 (which at the time was the correct response) has shifted to a much more measured and conditional approach where he has muted the overtly pro-Israel statements and started talking about a two-state solution and the need to protect the lives of civilians and trying to keep a lid on what could become a REALLY bad situation with all kinds of war-hungry powers eager to jump into the Middle East and blow it completely to hell. As I have said in my other posts, Trump will not do this. Trump will do the exact opposite. Which is why Netanyahu, who doesn't like having his hands tied precisely in the way Biden is doing, is trying so hard to get Trump back in. This also extends to the people who think that the West/the U.S. is the source of all evil in the world, but they're somehow the only people that can make actual choices or have real agency. Everyone else is just an American puppet; everyone is being lied to or manipulated by America/the West; nobody ever chose anything of their own free will; America/the West could roll in and put a stop to everything bad if they "really wanted to," but choose not to because etc. etc., Evil. As such, this completely fact-free belief is basically the central starting point for Online Leftism, which as I have also said, is now beyond useless and verging on just as deranged and actively dangerous as the fascists, especially since they are 100% willing to enable far-right fascism however and whenever they can because something something, That Will Show Us.
Anyway. Yes. Whew.

The UK Supreme Court’s Landmark Ruling on AI and Patent Law

The UK Supreme Court’s Landmark Ruling on AI and Patent Law
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a groundbreaking decision that sets a significant precedent in the realm of intellectual property and artificial intelligence, the UK Supreme Court has ruled that an artificial intelligence system cannot be registered as the inventor of a patent. This ruling comes as a climax to a prolonged legal battle waged by American technologist Stephen Thaler, who sought to have his AI system, named DABUS, recognized as the inventor of two patents.
Stephen Thaler’s journey in challenging the traditional boundaries of patent law began with his claim that DABUS autonomously invented a novel food and drink container and a unique type of light beacon. This claim put the existing legal framework to the test, raising critical questions about the evolving role of AI in creative and innovative processes. Thaler’s contention was not merely about the capabilities of DABUS but also touched upon the broader implications of AI’s role in future technological advancements and intellectual property rights.
The UK’s highest court, however, concluded that under the current legislative framework, “an inventor must be a person.” This decision firmly places human agency and creativity at the center of the patent law system, delineating clear boundaries between human and machine-generated inventions. The ruling reinforces the notion that despite their advanced capabilities, AI systems like DABUS do not possess legal personhood and therefore cannot be credited with human-like attributes such as inventorship.
This decision by the UK Supreme Court echoes similar sentiments upheld by tribunals in the United States and the European Union, which have also rejected Thaler’s applications to list DABUS as an inventor. The U.K. Intellectual Property Office initially rejected Thaler’s application in 2019, setting the stage for a legal debate that has now culminated in this landmark Supreme Court ruling.
This ruling is not just a conclusion to a legal dispute but marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse about the relationship between AI and human creativity. As AI systems continue to evolve and play an increasingly significant role in various fields, this ruling serves as a critical reminder of the existing legal and ethical frameworks that govern our understanding and utilization of these technologies.
Legal Implications of the Decision
The UK Supreme Court’s unanimous decision underscores a key legal principle: the definition of an inventor is intrinsically linked to human personhood. This ruling has significant implications for the field of intellectual property law, especially in the context of rapidly advancing AI technologies. The court’s stance that AI, as a non-human entity, cannot be attributed with inventorship, reaffirms the traditional view that legal personhood is a prerequisite for such recognition.
Legal experts are now closely examining the ramifications of this decision. While the ruling provides clarity on the current legal standing of AI in patent law, it also highlights a growing gap between existing legislation and technological advancement. AI systems like DABUS are increasingly capable of generating novel ideas and solutions, raising questions about their potential role in intellectual property creation.
Furthermore, this ruling has sparked a discussion about the role of policymakers in shaping the future of AI in intellectual property law. The decision signifies that changes in the legal recognition of AI as an inventor, if any, would likely come from legislative updates rather than judicial verdicts. This perspective aligns with the growing recognition that AI technology is outpacing the current legal frameworks, necessitating a proactive approach by lawmakers to address these emerging challenges.
The case also sheds light on the broader legal and ethical considerations surrounding AI and creativity. The court’s decision raises fundamental questions about the nature of invention and the role of AI in the creative process. As AI continues to evolve, so too does the debate around its capabilities and limitations within the legal system. This ruling, therefore, not only addresses a specific legal question but also contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the place of AI in our society.
Broader Impact on AI Innovation and Future Developments
The UK Supreme Court’s decision, while providing legal clarity, also opens a conversation about the future trajectory of AI in the realm of innovation and intellectual property. This ruling distinctly separates the creative capacities of AI from the legal recognition of invention, a demarcation that has far-reaching implications for the field of AI development and the broader technology sector.
The decision signifies a pivotal moment for AI innovators and developers. It effectively means that while AI can assist in the creative process, the legal credit and subsequent patent rights will reside with human inventors. This could lead to a reevaluation of how AI is integrated into the research and development processes, especially in sectors that heavily rely on patents, such as pharmaceuticals, technology, and engineering.
Moreover, the ruling raises critical questions about the motivation and incentives for AI innovation. If AI-generated inventions cannot be patented, it may impact the investment in and development of AI systems designed for creative or problem-solving tasks. This could potentially slow the pace of innovation, as patent protection is often a key driver for research and development investment. However, it also encourages a collaborative model where AI is seen as a tool augmenting human creativity, rather than replacing it.
The case highlights the need for a forward-looking approach to AI governance and legal frameworks. As AI systems become increasingly sophisticated, capable of autonomously generating ideas and solutions, there will be a growing need for policies and laws that reflect these advancements. This ruling might prompt policymakers and legal experts to consider new frameworks that can accommodate the unique capabilities of AI while preserving the foundational principles of patent law.
In the broader societal context, this ruling contributes to the ongoing debate about the role of AI in our lives. It touches on ethical considerations, such as the ownership of ideas generated by non-human entities and the definition of creativity in the age of AI. As AI continues to permeate various aspects of society, these discussions will become increasingly important, shaping how we understand and interact with these advanced technologies.

On the future Queen Consort Camilla
Every few years there is a buzz about the future title of the Duchess of Cornwall. We all know that at the time of their marriage, it was announced that Camilla would someday be known not as Queen, but as Princess Consort.
Obviously this was in part to address the problem of unpopularity they faced in the first few years of their marriage. But while Charles’ popularity has generally plateaued, Camilla’s has steadily climbed in the years since their marriage.
Personally, I think this is due to Camilla’s innate sense of what to do and how to behave, her charm, her obvious support of Charles, and her taking on very challenging and important issues. It’s hard to identify even one incident since her marriage where she has ‘got it wrong.’ She has naturally, quietly, and gracefully taken her place as a senior Royal Lady.
It would be niave to think that Clarence House made the Princess Consort announcement without the expectation that it would changed in time. Charles obviously adores his wife and wants her to be queen. I can respect that, but ultimately I feel that the issue is a constitutional and a moral one.
(Queue Cherie Blair’s tart reply in The Queen: “But we don’t have a constitution.”)
It’s clear to eveybody that the British Constitution isn’t like the American version: it’s not a single document but the precedents set over time through all the acts of Parliament and all previous laws--the thousands of old papers and scrolls in the Parliament archives. (Yes, I ate up my Edmund Burke indoctrination like a good boy way back in childhood--strange food for a cornfed American.) And as an American citizen, I wish we had a greater ability to update our constitution for modern times; something very hard to accomplish in the USA which happens naturally in the UK.
My first point, finally, is this: There is no constitutional precedent for the king’s wife being anything other than queen consort. There has never been a princess consort in British history. And why would it be these two in particular who bring on this change? No other concrete reason except that they are both divorced.
It feels retrograde and exclusionary to demote the royal consort for a previous failed marriage in this modern time when so many people are divorced. What would that say to all the children of divorced families? That they are somehow less than worthy. What would it say about Camilla? That she is, by virtue of a divorce, unworthy to be queen consort. But Charles, although divorced himself and perhaps more morally responsible for past wrongs than Camilla, would still enjoy the full status as king--and Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
So my second and final point is this: to give Camilla any title other than Queen Consort would be unfairly punative of Camilla over Charles, offensive to the millions of divorced persons and children of divorce, outdated, misogynist, hypocritical, and out of touch with the modern world.
What do you think?

hi, just wondering if anyone could maybe sum up this interview with lando? or maybe screenshot it? i’d love to do it myself but given the fact that i don’t live in the uk i can’t access it... thanks
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/lando-norris-discovers-importance-of-fitness-hell-need-it-as-daniel-ricciardos-team-mate-bm6lnrdrg
hey Anon! I copied the whole article and put it under the read more!! I hope this helps🧡.
I hope you’re having a good day, Anon! 🧡
McLaren kicked off the 2021 car launches this week alongside their drivers for the season, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. The car looks pretty similar to last year, so it was hard to get too excited about it — or any of the other nine launches happening over the coming weeks, for that matter.
Of interest, however, were Norris’s comments about how he plans to approach the physical side of the job: by doing gym work and cutting back on pizza.
“I have tried to be more strict with certain things, whether that is with food and trying not to have a pizza as often,” the 21-year-old said. “I can still have a little treat now and then, but it is also the physical side of it, too. Trying to do more in the gym because I struggle with that part of it.
“I know I am in Formula One and I am in a very privileged position, but that doesn’t matter because I can still struggle to want to go out on a run or go into the gym and lift weights. I struggle to motivate myself, so I have tried more things and pushed myself through moments that I hate because I know that good things come of it.
“I am better prepared physically because of it. I am trying to think outside the box and dedicating more time to work out what is good for me and push myself to the next level.”
The Bristol-born youngster is heading into his third season in Formula One and has been honest in the past about how he does not enjoy the gym — but who does? Three sets of ten squats followed by 20 burpees is no one’s idea of fun. If you want time to go slowly, try doing a plank for a minute.
Yet F1 is extremely physically demanding and there is a reason Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen place great importance on their physical fitness. Hamilton, 36, is also not a fan of the gym, and seems to find new ways to keep fit each year: he has been cross-country skiing to get himself into shape for the new season.
Drivers can be in the car for up to two hours, sometimes in temperatures well above 30C and, aside from the mental toll that takes, their bodies are pushed to the limit physically. If they are not fit enough, performance will decline.
Verstappen collapsed in 2016 after a particularly hot practice session in Malaysia. Drivers can lose between two and three kilograms of weight each race as the demands of hurtling around the track at up to 200mph, putting the body through extreme G-forces, take effect.
If any driver wants to be a world champion, they have to be supremely fit. Michael Schumacher changed the way drivers approached fitness in the Nineties — they were already taking it seriously, but the German upped the ante.
Schumacher would push his body to the extreme during training, building his stamina and strength so that in races, where other drivers might drop off towards the end as they tired, he could continue to push to the limit all the way to the chequered flag. That, coupled with his immense talent, forced the rest of the grid to up their game.
So it is surprising that Norris seems to have only just realised that he needs to increase the physical side of his training, but I suspect that may have something to do with his new team-mate, as well as becoming more mature with age. Norris insists he does not feel any more pressure having Ricciardo in the garage than he did when Carlos Sainz was his team-mate, but he should.
Ricciardo is a seven-times race winner, extremely talented and, at 31, knows that the move to McLaren may be his last chance of a shot at the world title. The Australian is going to be pushing hard. He keeps himself very fit, and also finds novel ways of doing so, including whacking huge tyres in his garden in Perth.
Drivers are always given a bit of leeway in their first years, but Norris no longer has that luxury and he needs to step up and help McLaren challenge at the front of the grid again.
The team’s third-place finish in the constructors’ championship last year shows that the Woking-based outfit are moving in the right direction. Ricciardo is a good hire for the team, bringing with him not only experience but also a fun attitude. Those who worked with him at Red Bull speak highly of his light-hearted personality. That said, his nickname of the “Honey badger” is a nod to his ruthless streak and Norris will know that.
Norris is right to up his game, not only to improve his performance but to help the team and to try to challenge his team-mate. Perhaps they can find new ways to work out together and start a budding bromance to rival the one that Norris had with Sainz.

Rapid Urbanization to Help Asia Pacific Gain Prominence
Asia Pacific is estimated to dominate the global ice cream market with a market value of USD 15.43 billion in 2019. The increasing disposable income and rapid urbanization in major countries including China, India, and Japan are estimated to drive the growth in the region. In addition, the rising popularity of fast food in the region is estimated to enhance the demand in Asia Pacific.
The market in North America is projected to exhibit significant growth in the forecast timeline. A wide range of fast-food chains, coupled with the increasing demand for natural products is set to further propel the need for ice-creams in the region.

House Sets Impeachment Vote to Charge Trump With Incitement (NYT) House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against President Trump on Monday for his role in inflaming a mob that attacked the Capitol, scheduling a Wednesday vote to charge the president with “inciting violence against the government of the United States” if Vice President Mike Pence refused to strip him of power first. As the impeachment drive proceeded, federal law enforcement authorities accelerated efforts to fortify the Capitol ahead of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s inauguration on Jan. 20. The authorities announced plans to deploy up to 15,000 National Guard troops and set up a multilayered buffer zone with checkpoints around the building by Wednesday, just as lawmakers are to debate and vote on impeaching Mr. Trump. Federal authorities also said they were bracing for a wave of armed protests in all 50 state capitals and Washington in the days leading up to the inauguration.
National Guard inauguration deployment (Military Times) The Defense Department has authorized as many as 15,000 troops to be deployed to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. National Guard Bureau chief Gen. Daniel Hokanson said that there will initially be a deployment of 10,000 troops—an increase of about 4,000 from those in D.C. now. That figure is twice the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. The general declined to specify whether the guardsmen will be armed, stating that “we will work very closely with the federal agency, the FBI and law enforcement to determine if there is a need for that.” A D.C. National Guard spokesman told Military Times on Sunday that while some troops came to town with their weapons, carrying them on the streets had not yet been authorized.
Companies cutting off Trump and GOP (Yahoo Finance) Marriott and Blue Cross Blue Shield are just a few of the companies that are halting donations to GOP lawmakers who objected to certifying Joe Biden as president, while other businesses move to cut ties with President Trump directly. The actions come on the heels of Friday’s permanent suspension of Donald Trump’s Twitter account and Amazon’s move to cut off social media platform Parler’s servers. (NYT) The backlash is part of a broader shunning of Mr. Trump and his allies unfolding in the wake of the assault on the Capitol. Schools stripped the president of honorary degrees, some prominent Republicans threatened to leave the party and the New York State Bar Association announced it had begun investigating Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, which could lead to his removal from the group. And the P.G.A. of America announced it would strip Mr. Trump’s New Jersey golf club of a major tournament.
Virus deaths surging in California, now top 30,000 (AP) The coronavirus death toll in California reached 30,000 on Monday, another staggering milestone as the nation’s most populous state endures the worst surge of the nearly yearlong pandemic. Newly confirmed infections are rising at a dizzying rate of more than a quarter-million a week and during the weekend a record 1,163 deaths were reported. Los Angeles County is one of the epicenters and health officials there are telling residents to wear a mask even when at home if they go outside regularly and live with someone elderly or otherwise at high risk. California has deployed 88 refrigerated trailers to use as makeshift morgues mostly in hard-hit Southern California, where traditional storage space is dwindling.
A never-ending scandal (Bloomberg) Lockheed Martin Corp.’s F-35, the fighter jet already being flown by the U.S. and eight allies, remains marred by 871 software and hardware deficiencies that could undercut readiness, missions or maintenance, according to the Pentagon’s testing office. The Defense Department’s costliest weapons system “continues to carry a large number of deficiencies, many of which were identified prior to” the development and demonstration phase, which ended in April 2018 with 941 flaws, Robert Behler, the director of operational testing, said in a new assessment obtained by Bloomberg News in advance of its publication.
Pompeo Returns Cuba to Terrorism Sponsor List (NYT) The State Department designated Cuba a state sponsor of terrorism on Monday in a last-minute foreign policy stroke that will complicate the incoming Biden administration’s plans to restore friendlier relations with Havana. In a statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited Cuba’s hosting of 10 Colombian rebel leaders, along with a handful of American fugitives wanted for crimes committed in the 1970s, and Cuba’s support for the authoritarian leader of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. Mr. Pompeo said the action sent the message that “the Castro regime must end its support for international terrorism and subversion of U.S. justice.” The action, announced with just days remaining in the Trump administration, reverses a step taken in 2015 after President Barack Obama restored diplomatic relations with Cuba, calling its decades of political and economic isolation a relic of the Cold War.
Brexit sandwich problems (BBC) A Dutch TV network has filmed border officials confiscating ham sandwiches and other foods from drivers arriving in the Netherlands from the UK, under post-Brexit rules. Under EU rules, travellers from outside the bloc are banned from bringing in meat and dairy products. The rules appeared to bemuse one driver. “Since Brexit, you are no longer allowed to bring certain foods to Europe, like meat, fruit, vegetables, fish, that kind of stuff,” a Dutch border official told the driver in footage broadcast by TV network NPO 1. In one scene, a border official asked the driver whether several of his tin-foil wrapped sandwiches had meat in them. When the driver said they did, the border official said: “Okay, so we take them all.” Surprised, the driver then asked the officials if he could keep the bread, to which one replied: “No, everything will be confiscated—welcome to the Brexit, sir. I’m sorry.”
Merkel sees coronavirus lockdown until early April: Bild (Reuters) Chancellor Angela Merkel has told lawmakers in her conservative party that she expects a lockdown in Germany to curb the spread of the coronavirus to last until the start of April, top-selling Bild daily cited participants as the meeting as saying. “If we don’t manage to stop this British virus, then we will have 10 times the number of cases by Easter. We need eight to 10 more weeks of tough measures,” Bild quoted Merkel as saying.
‘A Stalin with double meat’ (Foreign Policy) A Moscow kebab shop named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin has closed after just 24 hours of opening after a string of complaints from angry residents. In its brief existence Stalin Doner served items like “Stalin with double meat” and “Beria with tkemali sauce”—a reference to Stalin’s notorious secret police chief. The shop’s owner, Stanislav Voltman, was interviewed by police for three hours following complaints. “They asked me if my head was screwed on straight,” Voltman told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. “It’s not like I had Hitler as the face of my brand,” Voltman said. Despite public outcry about the kebabs, support for Stalin is on the rise in Russia. A Levada Center poll in 2019 found that 70 percent of Russians think Stalin played a completely or relatively positive role in the life of the country.
In Kashmir, Hopes Wither (NYT) Kashmir, the craggily beautiful region in the shadow of the Himalayas long caught between India and Pakistan, has fallen into a state of suspended animation. Schools are closed. Lockdowns have been imposed, lifted and then reimposed. Once a hub for both Western and Indian tourists, Kashmir has been reeling for more than a year. First, India brought in security forces to clamp down on the region. Then the coronavirus struck. The streets are full of soldiers. Military bunkers, removed years ago, are back, and at many places cleave the road. On highways, soldiers stop passenger vehicles and drag commuters out to check their identity cards. Conflict in Kashmir, India’s only Muslim-majority region, has festered for decades. And an armed uprising has long sought self-rule. Tens of thousands of rebels, civilians and security forces have died since 1990. India and Pakistan have gone to war twice over the territory, which is split between them but claimed by both in its entirety. Now, as India flexes its power over the region, to even call Kashmir a disputed region is a crime—sedition, according to Indian officials. Many say that the political paralysis is the worst it has ever been in Kashmir’s 30 years of conflict, and that people have been choked into submission.
India’s top court suspends implementation of new farm laws (AP) India’s top court on Tuesday temporarily put on hold the implementation of new agricultural laws and ordered the formation of an independent committee of experts to negotiate with farmers who have been protesting against the legislation. The Supreme Court’s ruling came a day after it heard petitions filed by the farmers challenging the controversial legislation. The court said that the laws were passed without enough consultation, and that it was disappointed with the way talks were proceeding between representatives of the government and farmer leaders. Tens of thousands of farmers protesting against the legislation have been blocking half a dozen major highways on the outskirts of New Delhi for more than 45 days. Farmers say they won’t leave until the government repeals the laws. They say the legislation passed by Parliament in September will lead to the cartelization and commercialization of agriculture, make farmers vulnerable to corporate greed and devastate their earnings. The government insists the laws will benefit farmers and says they will enable farmers to market their produce and boost production through private investment.
First came political crimes. Now, a digital crackdown descends on Hong Kong. (Washington Post) HONG KONG—The police officers who came to take away Owen Chow on national security grounds last week left little to chance. Determined to find his phones, they had prepared a list of mobile numbers registered to his name, even one he used exclusively for banking, said the 23-year-old Hong Kong activist. Officers called each number in succession, the vibrations revealing the locations of three iPhones around his apartment. By the end of their operation, police had amassed more than 200 devices from Chow and 52 others held for alleged political crimes that day, according to those arrested, as well as laptops from spouses who are not politically active and were not detained. The digital sweep showed how Hong Kong authorities are wielding new powers under the national security law, introduced last summer, far more widely than the city’s leader promised. Since the Jan. 6 raids, authorities have blocked at least one website, according to the site’s owner and local media reports, raising concerns that Hong Kong is headed for broader digital surveillance and censorship akin to that in mainland China. Hong Kong police have begun sending devices seized from arrested people to mainland China, where authorities have sophisticated data-extraction technology, and are using the information gleaned from those devices to assist in investigations, according to two people familiar with the arrangement who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their safety.
26 missing, at least 13 dead in Indonesia landslides (AP) Rescuers are searching for 26 people still missing after two landslides hit a village in Indonesia’s West Java province over the weekend, officials said Tuesday. At least 13 people were killed and 29 others injured in the landslides that were triggered by heavy rain on Sunday in Cihanjuang, a village in West Java’s Sumedang district. Some of the victims were rescuers from the first landslide.
Leading human rights group calls Israel an ‘apartheid’ state (AP) A leading Israeli human rights group has begun describing both Israel and its control of the Palestinian territories as a single “apartheid” regime, using an explosive term that the country’s leaders and their supporters vehemently reject. In a report released Tuesday, B’Tselem says that while Palestinians live under different forms of Israeli control in the occupied West Bank, blockaded Gaza, annexed east Jerusalem and within Israel itself, they have fewer rights than Jews in the entire area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. “One of the key points in our analysis is that this is a single geopolitical area ruled by one government,” said B’Tselem director Hagai El-Ad. “This is not democracy plus occupation. This is apartheid between the river and the sea.” That a respected Israeli organization is adopting a term long seen as taboo even by many critics of Israel points to a broader shift in the debate as its half-century occupation of war-won lands drags on and hopes for a two-state solution fade.
Uganda bans social media ahead of presidential election (Reuters) Uganda banned social media on Tuesday, two days ahead of a presidential election pitting Yoweri Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, against opposition frontrunner Bobi Wine, a popular singer. Internet monitor NetBlocks said its data showed that Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Skype, Snapchat, Viber and Google Play Store were among a lengthy list of sites unavailable via Uganda’s main cell network operators. Campaigning ahead of the vote has been marred by brutal crackdowns on opposition rallies, which the authorities say break COVID-19 curbs on large gatherings. Rights groups say the restrictions are a pretext for muzzling the opposition. At 38, Wine is half the age of President Yoweri Museveni and has attracted a large following among young people in a nation where 80% of the population are under 30, rattling the ruling National Resistance Movement party.
Coronavirus-spurred changes to global workforce to be permanent (Reuters) Sweeping changes to the global labour market caused by the coronavirus pandemic will likely be permanent, policy makers said on Tuesday, as some industries collapse, others flourish and workers stay home. The pandemic, which has so far infected at least 90.5 million people and killed around 1.9 worldwide, has up-ended industries and workers in almost every country in the world as tough lockdowns were imposed. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has estimated that the impact of huge job losses worldwide is creating a fiscal gap that threatens to increase inequality between richer and poorer countries. The ILO estimated that global labour income declined by 10.7 per cent, or $3.5 trillion, in the first three quarters of 2020, compared with the same period in 2019, excluding government income support. India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the pandemic had created an “accidental challenge” under which the government delivered food on a regular basis to 800 million people and provided sustained business funds. Philippines central bank Governor Benjamin Diokno said it was clear some industries will not survive, others will not be as dynamic as before, and yet others will be boosted by the massive changes. The need for a more nimble and innovative approach to education will remain long after the pandemic ends, said Helen Fulson, Chief Product Officer at educational publisher Twinkl. “How many children today will be doing jobs that currently don’t exist?’ she said at Reuters Next on Monday. “We don’t know how to train for these jobs.”

Kefir Market Size, 2020 Industry Share and Global Demand | 2027 Forecast by Fortune Business Insights™
Kefir Market size is projected to reach USD 1.84 billion by 2027, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.4% during the forecast period. Excellent benefits of fermented dairy products on heart health will prove to be a major game-changer for this market in the coming years.
Fortune Business Insights™ in its report, titled “Kefir Market Size, Share & COVID-19 Impact Analysis, By Product Type (Dairy-based & Non-dairy), By Nature (Organic & Conventional), Category (Flavored & Non-flavored), Distribution Channel (Supermarkets/Hypermarkets, Convenience Stores, Specialty Stores, & Online Retail), and Regional Forecast, 2020-2027”. Findings from a 2018 study conducted by researchers from the University of Eastern Finland revealed that men who consume large amount of fermented dairy items such as kefir and yoghurt have a significantly lower risk of developing coronary heart disease. Another study, conducted in Brazil and published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry in 2019, showed that kefir-infused fermented milk improved blood pressure and prevented cardiac hypertrophy. With increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disorders, which are the number one cause of death worldwide according to the WHO, the demand for probiotics-laden ingredients such as kefir is likely to spike, as people become more aware of their potential health benefits.
The report states that the global market value stood at USD 1.23 billion in 2019 and provides the following:
A thorough study of all the factors driving and restraining the     market;
Detailed analysis of the various market segments;
A comprehensive examination of the regional prospects for the     market; and
In-depth research of the competitive landscape of the market.
 Market Opportunity
Increasing Focus on Gut Health to Fight the Coronavirus to Create Opportunities
The COVID-19 pandemic has renewed the debate on maintaining gut health, with several health experts emphasizing and highlighting the critical link between the immune system and the gut. For example, epidemiologists at the King’s College London established through research that gut bacteria release many important chemicals, including Vitamin A, which help regulate and strengthen the immune system.
With a vaccine for the coronavirus seeming unlikely in the immediate future, bolstering the gut micro-biome, and the immune system by extension, has become crucial. This is possible, according to the researchers, by consuming healthy amounts of natural probiotics found in drinks such as kefir and fermented foods such as Korean kimchi. The current health crisis, therefore, may generate conditions favorable to the kefir market growth. However, disruptions in supply chains and downturn in economic activities will dampen the growth prospects of the market in 2020.
 Regional Insights
High Nutritional Awareness to Power Market Growth in Europe
Europe, where the market size stood at USD 654.78 million in 2019, is expected to dominate the kefir market share during the forecast period. The central growth driver for this region is the widespread awareness about the nutritional requirements to maintain gut health. Emerging trend of healthy snacking is also expected to boost the demand for fermented milk in the region.
Increasing investment in research to investigate the benefits of probiotic food & drinks by companies in North America will fuel the regional market growth. In Asia Pacific, the market will be mainly driven by the growing interest of consumers in novel, flavored probiotic products, especially dairy-based kefir, which held a share of 71.91% in 2019 in the region.

  Drivers & Restraints-
Rising Inclination towards Healthy Food to Add Impetus
The Increasing prevalence of chronic and acute diseases among people irrespective of age is a key factor propelling the adoption of healthy food. This stands as a major factor boosting the global healthy snacks market growth. In addition to this, the rising evolution of the food industry and the advent of various food and snacks varieties such as flavors, shapes, sizes, and nutritional value is also adding impetus to the market. Besides this, the advancement in food processing and preservation technology will also aid in the expansion of the market.
However, factors such as processing-related challenges, moisture retention as a result of sugar and fat reduction, and low shelf life of snacks highly rich in fruit and vegetable content may pose major challenges to the market growth. Nevertheless, the growing popularity of functional and convenience foods and the increasing adoption of on-the-go and ready-to-eat snacking, coupled with the increasing awareness among health conscious consumers are expected to create lucrative growth opportunities for the market in the coming years.
  Segment
Nut-based Snacks segment to Cover Largest Share Owing to their High Protein Content

 Regional Analysis-
Europe Emerged Dominant Owing to Increasing Popularity of On-the-go Nutrition
Geographically, Europe covered the largest healthy snacks market share with a revenue of 31.06 billion earned in 2019. The growth of this region is attributed to the presence of a majority of health conscious people with hectic schedules and busy lifestyles. The advent of on-the-go nutrition and functional food products has propelled the need for healthy snacks, thereby augmenting the regional market.
On the other side, the market in Asia Pacific is likely to showcase the fastest growth in the coming years on account of the rising disposable incomes of people, increasing adoption of healthy lifestyle, and the growing popularity of food products that promote wellbeing, known as ‘better-for-you’ products.

Love that Dana and Mandy now have a theme, but drop the “Mandy” intro.
So they’re saying Miz is the reason these 2 were traded over before the draft?
Unfair nitpick: Mandy deserves to wear all the Gucci she wants, but I’m a little irritated because that’s Charlotte’s thing. I’m an idiot, I know.
I appreciate that wwe is taking this new team serious enough to give them a platform to work out any pre-teaming kinks.
Mandy doing real decent mic work. Especially compared to Lana and Dana. Good for her.
Tumblr media
Dana needs to work on her speed.
I like the way Mandy went into that armdrag by hitting the ropes first. Point.
*Dana pins Lana*; *Mandy climbs halfway through the ropes like she might interrupt* ???
Mandy can be a decent face, why not. She’s a little bland rn but it’s a work in progress.
Like the knee strike by Mandy into the senton by Dana, especially off Mandy’s shoulders. Fine finisher.
Lol Nattie mad Lana lost them the match again. Ma’am tbf you get taken out by a punch and then crumple up into a ball far too often.
“Are you really that stupid” in kf I kinda get splitting them up, but in a meta sense, Nattie was the perfect partner for Lana.
Tumblr media
Zelina: “Alexa Quinn seems to have a little bit of an identity crisis going on [...] she’s a joke to me,” Why do you care about Alexa Bliss? Cuz she’s cute and psychotic and makes me fear for my life, as she should for you too.
“Twisted union” omg they did dual Sister Abigails. See Zelina you should’ve just sat there and ate your food.
Zelina ran her mouth about Alexa, so Fiend accompanied Alexa in an ambush and they took out Zelina and her client together. This is precious, I love this story. Love that Fiend will do Alexa’s bidding just the same. Points.
Tumblr media
Fitting to make Nia and Shayna the 2 hated ones in the battle royal. Still love their dynamic.
Sexy Muscles Friends rekt by Nia. Shame.
Nia is so fucking funny. Sees all of the women looking at her with fire in their eyes, and she’s like, “just breathe” before they stampede on over.
Lmfao Nia eliminated in part by Shayna. I can’t stop laughing.
WELP RIP LANA. I know who’s winning this one now.
Not an ounce of me cares about Drew and Randy brawling.
Wise of Lacey to use Nikki’s tornado ddt attempt to set her over the rope. She gets a point.
Good for Bianca getting the elimination over Shayna. Deep history there.
Love seeing Riott Squad evade each other in the ring. This spot was totally planned, but it’s still great.
Lana won by eliminating Nattie lmfao. I hate that she won cuz wow that’s an awful challenger for Asuka, but that’s hilarious karma.
Again I don’t fucking care about Drew or Randy, bye.

I mean Ember should definitely be in nxt, that’s where she’ll shine. She was spinning her wheels as a mere spot monkey on the MR. If she learns how to do promos, maybe she can try up on the MR again in the future.
*The Garganos plan to overcome all odds* No.

Rhea may not own the place but she owns the division. Io may be champion but Rhea is the obvious standout. Sorry bout it.
I liked that. Challenge is made in the pc by Raquel, Rhea overhears it, and they decide to fight then and there before being held back by officials. I approve of this segment. Points.

The disrespect shown to Shotzi’s helmet. Whew what a bitch lol.
Love the block to Candice’s neckbreaker, hate how long it took Shotzi to kick Candice. Full second wasted.
Ugly suicide dive. Didn’t feel impactful whatsoever.
lol kicked out at one. Candice said fuck your suicide dive. Fair.
Candice and her sorry ass attempt at her discount Natural Selection EVERY SINGLE MATCH SHE FIGHTS IN infuriates me. Negative 3 points.
Candice’s entire demeanor isn’t buyable. Her and her slow, methodical bs style. She’d be eaten alive on the MR.
Good counter by Candice. There are high risk moves that Shotzi needs to not do on random tv matches.
Haha Shotzi kicked out of the backstabber and springboard moonsault. Good.
That moonsault is absolutely not textbook. Io’s is textbook. Lacey’s is textbook. Charlotte’s is textbook. All of them can do the backflip part perfectly aligned and straight. Candice’s is ugly as sin in comparison, only difference is hers is a springboard.
*sigh* okay so if you want to built a repertoire between Indi and Candice, having Indi give her brass knuckles to help her win the match is great. But ffs Candice, after you pop Shotzi on the apron, fucking THROW THEM DOWN ON THE GROUND and then go for the cover. How awkward, watching her hold her arm behind her back for 2 friggin minutes before giving them back to Indi. Mk.

So Toni’s entire repackage is literally JUST new music and calling herself a heel?
GREAT neckbreaker by Aliyah.
Sure whatever. Anyway.

I don’t know what’s worse; watching a long match of nothing but wrist locks and rest holds, or watching the competitors become exhausted from doing nothing but wrist locks and rest holds.
This is wrestling with no ropes, no turnbuckles, and no running allowed.
I remember once in 2019, people said Piper Niven is what wwe wants Nia Jax to be, but 10x better. You know what Nia Jax does well? Comedy. She understands how to be an entertainer. She understands how to perform in the ring without busting out that sweet workrate. Nia Jax found her niche, and that’s why she has a title rn. Piper Niven has not. In the spirit of fairness as well, the pandemic has not treated a lot of these women kindly, and it’s apparent to me that Piper has supremely suffered from it.
This makes me want to go watch Sasha vs Nia 2019. That’s how you make an intriguing match utilizing the difference in size between competitors.
Lol so Piper is in the corner, Isla hops up onto the turnbuckle in the opposite side of the ring, Piper slowly walks over and stops a mere 2 feet from where Isla is crouching up top, and then just stands there until Isla hits a meteora. Lmao. This should’ve been 3 mins with zero wrist locks. Anyway.
Highlight: the ending sequence by Piper was fine

Great video hyping up Bianca. It’s cool to see how highly wwe rates her. Hopefully they take their time with her, because there’s still some things she needs to work on in the ring, but she has the full package imo. Just needs more time to cook.

It’s interesting how it worked out that Sasha became the queen of Hell in a Cell.
Bayley’s such an asshole, I love her so much.
“...which I did ALL BY MYSELF by the way,” lmfao PLEASE. That shit would have been gone at Wrestlemania had it not been for Sasha.
To be fucking fair, it’s buyable for Bayley to be overly paranoid and believe Sasha turning on her was inevitable, considering Sasha HAS been eyeing that title since 2019. She still stayed loyal though, Bayley. Could’ve let some nobody win it off you and then take it from them herself... but she didn’t.
The execution isn’t the best, but the points that Sasha is bringing to the table are valid. Problem is they went over 2016, 2017... and skipped to the tag titles in 2019. Y’all had ISSUES in 2018 lmao but it’s fine, we’ll pretend it never happened. Probably for the best. 6 month build that amounted to nothing other than a brilliant one liner of, “YOU AIN’T SHIT SASHA”
Lmao Bayley refusing to sign it. Bahahaha. Sasha should be calling her a chicken shit lesbireal. Coward isn’t strong enough.
Highlight: Bayley being a delusional asshole

In America, Privilege is Far More Fatal than COVID Yesterday, I received a report from Syria. It told of blistering heat and no electricity, of fuel lines, of food shortages and economic suffering by the Syrian people. This is an excerpt: “I wonder if people in EU, US and UK had to deal with the repercussions of their government sanctions on Syria, would they fight harder to get sanctions banned as a hybrid war, sadistic strategy. It is 41 degrees in Damascus, the cloud cover makes it heavy and oppressive. Electricity where I am is on for an hour, sometimes two before it cuts for three or four hours, just as the air conditioning makes your environment bearable. For some living close to me, they were without electricity for 14 hours in this sweltering heat. I wet my clothes to keep me cool while I am working, it is the only thing that helps. Mobile phones do not have time to charge. Food goes rotten because the fridge is off much of the time. Syrians traditionally store enough food in their freezer to last them two or three months. They are having to throw much of it away. At the same time, food prices are sky high. Nobody can afford to eat luxury items like chicken anymore. Lemons have become a luxury item, the price of one kilo has trebled in a few months. Parents do not know if they can feed their kids every day, they are living hand to mouth. All the roadside kiosks are seeing their livelihood go down the drain, literally, as everything in their freezer section melts or goes bad. The queues for fuel, while not as bad as before, are still a stressful scrum with cars lining up to take their ration. These are only a few of the effects of sanctions. Sanctions are designed to hurt, to deprive, to depress and, ultimately, to kill slowly and more painfully than the swift ending of life by a mortar or a bullet. Sanctions strip people of their dignity and leave them beggars in their own home.” Syria is but one nation targeted by the Trump regime, there are others and the stories like this are in the millions, told by those who still live. When Syria was attacked, it was not just starvation, it was terrorism as well with up to 400,000 dead and 5 million refugees. Iraq suffered a far worse fate, 2,000,000 dead. Both nations are still partially occupied by the United States, the nation that engineered this suffering. Now it is all coming home to roost, as here in the United States, what was done to Syria and Iraq, to Yemen and Iran, and to the best of Trump’s ability Venezuela’s people as well, is being deployed against the most vulnerable of Americans. We had another police killing yesterday, one we know of, there may well be others, in fact it is likely. This was in Los Angeles, another African American, his crime was riding a bicycle “improperly.” To understand how privilege applies, Dylan Roof, white mass murderer who killed 9 a the Emanuel AME Church was arrested with considerable care and, before being processed, was taken to the local Burger King for lunch by police as Dylan told them that murdering so many people “made him feel hungry.” As American humorist Jim W. Dean so often says; “You just can’t make this stuff up.” This is not unusual, this is the norm, this is how things work but you will not know unless you ask people, people who trust you with the truth. Problem there, the divide in America is so profound that the victims of insanity and brutality that started long before the current epidemic under Trump don’t want to talk to the media, such as it is and have no faith in political process. You see, political process in America reeks of corruption and privilege as well. Privilege, as with exceptionalism, is a form of corruption whether it is state sponsored apartheid as in Israel or the other version of apartheid, the American one, with walls and children in cages and bodies in the streets. Let us be clear about something else, while the media tries to smear the most well know victims like Beonna Taylor, every person of color in the United States is victimized unless “hand selected” like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a despicable human being reviled for his love of all things fascist. We might take a moment to discuss Breonna Taylor as well. This is a young woman of color living in Louisville, Kentucky, employed as a paramedic/first responder. Police broke into her home and killed her based on a false warrant. This is someone who had never committed a crime of any kind, police simply kicked down her door and murdered her for being black skinned, there is no other explanation. Yesterday, according to reports in the Washington Post, local prosecutor Tom Wine, a Trump backer, offered freedom to a number of drug suspects, if they would falsely incriminate Beonna Taylor, in order to aid Donald Trump in his election chances. Sources tell us Wine would then be nominated as US Attorney by Trump appointee William Barr. This level of corruption is seen every single day, even reported every single day but as the victims are of color in a land of “white privilege,” those who protest being falsely imprisoned or murdered by police are “violent hooligans.” Again, “you just can’t make this stuff up.” To understand the violence that is sweeping America today one can easily look at the violence that has swept the world, not just after 9/11 but long before. There are two words that are one in the same, one personal, one far greater, both are fatal. They are privilege and exceptionalism. The nature of “privilege” is insidious. For those who do not have COVID, for instance, who are not on a respirator or mourning the hundreds of thousands now dead, the disease is “fake.” This is privilege, denialism of the suffering of others because they are “others.” An unreported fact, nearly 4,000,000 older Americans live in nursing homes or residential facilities. None have been visited by family for nearly 6 months. Over 150,000 have died of COVID but reports that are creeping in speak of malnutrition, bed sores and widespread abuse and there is no one to help as families are not allowed to see their forgotten elders. The result of this, of course, is that older Americans have now become defacto “people of color” and reside in defacto “cages” like little brown babies ripped away from their mothers to amuse Trump’s political “base.” The insidious nature of privilege is that it can infect anyone, whatever their race or ethnicity. Privilege has become a hallmark of some religions, such as Christian Evangelism, infecting 35,000,000 Americans who attend church, pray continually but bask in a belief system that feeds exceptionalism and hatred. Privilege and exceptionalism are most often driven by fear. For some inherited money drives the unearned feeling of superiority, though Trump has, to a large extent, destroyed this concept through his bumbling ineptitude. Even the drooling Baron Rothschild and his carriage drawn through London by a team of zebras was not able to do that. If you are poor and white in America, “at least you aren’t black.” Thus, those who are otherwise the most marginal and vulnerable, not in all cases but some, perhaps many, take solace in having someone beneath them. “The humbleness of a warrior is not the humbleness of the beggar. The warrior lowers his head to no one, but at the same time, he does not permit anyone to lower his head to him. The beggar, on the other hand, falls to his knees at the drop of a hat and scrapes the floor to anyone he deems to be higher; but at the same time, he demands that someone lower than him scrape the floor for him.” – Carlos Castaneda Turning to Castaneda, whose “Way of the Warrior” defined excellence for so many during the 60’s and 70’s, in a way defines the failures in America’s culture today. “The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything as a blessing or a curse.” – Carlos Castaneda What can safely be generalized about how things really are in America? Yesterday I spent time with one of my friends, a painting contractor, American born Hispanic who speaks no Spanish, highly successful, and we discussed local police in my own affluent community. His experiences with the same police who are to me beyond polite and helpful, not so helpful mind you that I would ever depend on them for protection, are quite the opposite of mine. I now know there is a problem. Will I do or say nothing and if I find our community subject to disorder because of our collective indifference to the rights of all, will I be surprised? Am I privileged and exceptionalist? Were it not for time I spent as a police officer decades ago, a miserable job, his words would seem unreasonable but anyone who has worked in law enforcement knows that the greatest stress isn’t from the public, too often referred to as “potential suspects,” but rather from corrupt and ignorant coworkers. It does not take long to see that they are the real criminals. As a former police officer, one is typically never stopped by police or if one is, one is immediately not just released but usually engaged in friendly banter. To be clear, some departments are better than others, but none are perfect and some, like Kenosha, Wisconsin, are brutally incompetent and dangerous. What we have also seen at mass killing like Columbine or during the fear driven killings that are sending hundreds of thousands into the streets, many police are quite simply cowards with guns, a very dangerous combination. Many, however, are not. Many are competent, polite, professional and often end up sacrificing their lives for others. The problem there is that if you are one of these, working with the others is a nightmare. In many cases, “good police” are ostracized and threatened for failing to be corrupt, which is my own experience. This makes the job impossible and the victims are many, certainly good police suffer as they invariably are commanded by the most corrupt and incompetent but the communities they supposedly serve suffer as well. This is the case with Kenosha. There, the police department, as a whole, is generally seen by other police as very poor quality, highly corrupt, racially biased and a very bad place to work. For the community, if you are white, you won’t be arrested unless you do something exceptionally bad and if you are a powerful “insider,” you can never be arrested at all as police are likely to aid and abet in any criminal acts. In the post George Floyd world, however, it is the community that has allowed its police to degenerate into a “blue gang” that is suffering now, subjected to violent protests which are, quite frankly extremely well deserved. Each community has a choice, to stand for justice for all, which should be equal enforcement of the law and, if need be, strong but fair and legal crackdowns on criminal elements even if such elements are people of color. Police are there to investigate and take potential offenders into custody, based on reasonable procedures, where fair courts administer laws. The truth is everything, but this happens. Police administer punishment, too often based on hatred driven by misguided privilege and institutionalized corruption and extremism. As cohorts in “blue gang” violence, prosecutors and many judges throw law, justice and the constitution aside to the extent that any attorney representing a criminal defendant feels overwhelmed. Time and time again, trials are a mockery and lying police and fake evidence rule every process, all openly accepted not just by insiders but the media and the privileged and exceptionalist community as well. Worse still, in many cases those of color who manage to rise into “the system” become the worst of the worst, almost accepted by their white brethren, which is why we included the Castaneda quotes. The disease, as we define it is privilege. The byproduct is dehumanization and indifference. This is a disease so powerful that very few can stand up to it and fewer still can admit it exists or if they choose to do so, go to great lengths to misdefine it. We began by discussing Syria but what is happening there, engineered by “privileged exceptionalists” driven by extremism, is terrorism in its purist form. American policing may well be described as institutionalized terrorism as well. Every child in America can at some time be caged, certainly if of color or if one’s parents are of questionable ancestry. Every American can be murdered by police with impunity. In fact, the massive ownership of assault weapons by Americans is driven by a fear of police. Rural and suburban communities, where gun ownership is greatest, are not subject to even the rumor of “racial violence” that the media stokes with every word. Every spectrum of politics from right or left shares one thing with those of color, distrust of government and fear of assault not by armed criminals but by armed criminal police. The sad thing is that too many take solace in the fact that they will be the last to go, not the first. From Martin Niemoller: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.” And so it goes…
