y de pronto todos te hablan de las cosas "correctas". Estás tan pequeño para todo pero tan grande para donde sientes que debes estar. ¿Por qué siento que cada paso que doy es en la dirección equivocada? Estoy tan terriblemente cansada.
Perdóname, de verdad, perdóname por todas las veces que pedí perdón y no debía. Perdóname por todas las veces que recogí las migajas de lo que caía y lo llamaba amor. Quiero conservar mi gentileza pero estoy asesinando toda mi ira. Estoy acribillándome mientras tenso la mandíbula y cierro, pero bajo, los puños. Quiero ser amable. Quiero ser todo lo que nunca nadie fue conmigo. Quiero tener la suficiente paciencia. Quiero tener la suficiente fuerza para abrazar lo que mucha gente criticó. There's this quote about patriotism that goes something along the lines of that a patriot loves their country, which means that when it's going wrong they want to fix it, and that they look to the rest of the world not to say how they're better than them but to see what they're doing right or wrong and use that to make their country even better
It seems like that's what a lot of the Ukrainian nationalism is about. Loving your country, wanting it to be the best version of Ukraine it can be, and wanting to be free
Like I know often nationalism is basically just fascism, but with Ukraine it seems to basically be really strong patriotism. Not this my country right or wrong garbage, but just a desire to be allowed to be yourselves and be free
Precisely. There was one good article by Mariam Nayem, who is a cultorologist, where she talks that we need to distinguish between defensive nationalism, the basis of which is the protection of national identity, and aggressive or expensive nationalism, aimed at exporting one's own national identity and conquering the lands on which others live.
Defensive nationalism characterizes such formations united by a common memory, which feel a danger to their existence - either due to their small number (such as Lithuanians, Georgians, Chechens), or because of the threat from their expansionist neighbors. The nationalism of stable and self-confident ethnic groups that have quietly accumulated wealth for centuries differs in its goals and methods from the nationalism of those ethnic groups that fight for their right to live in a certain geographical area, the sovereignty of which is being questioned.
Expansive nationalism is outward-looking and therefore less aware of its own chauvinism and colonial aspirations. Somewhere in such a privileged space, formed due to the awareness of one's current greatness and the successful imposition of one's own thoughts about oneself on others, lies the desire to seize the land to establish their own institutions there and conduct their own activities.
When I first read this article, it just made so much sense to me because this is the exact difference between Ukrainian nationalism and russian.

"Apocalyptic Prophecy... [was] created for the theatre production “Waiting for Adam Spielman,” by Turkish-born Berliner playwright and director Hakan Savas Mican. It was staged in 2010 by the Israeli-born director Michael Ronen at Ballhaus Naunynstasse, Berlin’s groundbreaking “Post-Migrant” Theater. The play, a satirical dystopian fever dream written specifically for the international ensemble of actors who performed it, concerned the hopes and nightmares of a group of pilgrims who have traveled to the ruins of Detroit in search of the lost poet, prophet, and possible messiah Adam Spielman, a musician and drug-addict who, announcing his Apocalyptic Prophecy of Israel’s destruction, disappeared into the reforested city, never to return, but leaving a messianic liturgical text."

Steve Weintraub takes the “folkloric” dance genre and makes it Jewish! Folkloric dance is something you see quite a lot of in Mexico, and it’s also the bread and butter of the Igor Moiseyev dance troupe in Russia. In essence, it’s pretty much taking the forms, music, and movement vocabulary of genuine folk dances and artistifying it up -- making it bigger, better, more precise, flashier. Steve’s medium is Yiddish social dance, and here he is with a newly choreographed piece for the stage.
I think his choice of the Barry Sisters’ (with Seymour Rechtzeit and Dave Tarras) recording of “Dem Nayem Sher” is perfect to accompany. The dancers match the vocal trio perfectly, and both the costuming and the dance fit really well into that late-1930s-early-1940s “How the Jews Became American” aesthetic. Twenty years later, this is pure “community theater rehearsal of Fiddler on the Roof.” It captures a musical style, a dance style, and a moment in American Jewish history. I love it!
