it's really wild realizing that the cancellation of final space and subsequent erasure of it from hbomax was THEE harbinger of things to come and no one listened.
this happened months ago.
it wasn't just a silly blip on the radar of shows getting canceled. final space was only canceled due to the merger with warner. and then hbomax thanos snapped the entire series from its platform. without warning. not even olan knew. the third season is lost entirely. (the first two seasons made it to blu ray thank fuck.) olan rogers, creator and writer and star of the show, has absolutely no recourse to retrieve it.
just like every other show that is now being lost to whatever the fuck is happening.

BREAKING/EXCLUSIVE ON THE BITS: BEST BUY IS EXITING THE PHYSICAL MEDIA BUSINESS FOR GOOD IN 2024
Yesterday, The Digital Bits was the first to break the news that Best Buy would be fazing out physical media as soon as Q1 in 2024. This comes as a fairly odd decision considering the large amount of Best Buy Exclusive releases issued this year and even last year. There are also several BBE releases coming soon like The Twilight Saga, Schindler's List, Point Break, The Meg 2, and Equalizer 3. As someone that has shopped at Best Buy for many years, the physical media sections that once took up nearly half the store has been dwindled down to a single shelf unit or display kiosk that are commonly half empty. It is also typical for new titles to not always be put out on the sales floor for the scheduled release date. While this is not the end of physical media, this is simply a sign that physical media is not going to be around forever. Especially with the streaming wars still roaring and locking everything behind a pay wall. TDB recommends everyone buy the titles they want before it's too late as studios will likely not always re-issue titles. Also, always try to support physical media.

Genuinely: For people who are angry and frustrated at the limited number of movies and shows available for streaming, at the way streaming services pull or cancel movies and shows at will, at the way every media corporation under the sun is pulling their stuff onto their own streaming service and balkanizing access to things behind a dozen different monthly subscriptions? For people who miss Blockbuster and want to be able to just rent a DVD again?
See if your local library has a DVD collection.
If I want to watch The Mummy (1999) with Brendan Fraser? I can't stream it on Netflix, but I can borrow it from my local library.
If I want to watch The Mummy (1932) with Boris Karloff? I can't stream that pretty much anywhere, but I can borrow it from my local library.
I want to watch Star Wars or Iron Man or my favorite Disney movie but I refuse to sell my soul to pay for Disney+? I can borrow these from my local library.
Do I want to finish watching Star Trek: Deep Space 9 or check out Star Trek: Picard but resent that it's all on yet another streaming service I don't want? I can borrow season box sets of DVDs from my local library!
Obviously, available circulating collections vary a lot between library systems. (My hometown's library has all of Star Trek DS9 on DVD, for example, but my college town's library only has TOS, Picard, and Discovery.) And of course it depends on whether things are released in physical media form at all, and you won't be able to keep up with new episodes of new series - it takes a while for many things to come out on DVD.
But there can be a lot of good stuff there too. For example, I missed Nope in theaters, but I still really want to see it. So I have it on hold from my local library. I'm 73rd in line on 50 copies, so it'll be a while.
So check to see what DVD collections your library does have - it might surprise you what you can get access to, for free, in a manner that no greedy corporation can yank away.
And by checking out DVDs, you are telling the library that you use and want them to maintain and grow their AV media collection. Which is an encouragement we could really use these days.

i love physical media. i love dvds and cds. i love the cover art on the boxes and the way they look organised on a shelf.
i love owning a piece of media that will have to be pried from my cold dead hands to take it from me, instead of being wiped off the face of the earth with the click of a button the moment it stops being profitable.
i love the little manuals that came with video games. i love the design and effort and care put into the little details. i love it all, and we should appreciate it more as a society.

Sometimes I suspect autism and then I immediately push it down into the gutter and forget that I could ever have it. Like why was I so shy my kindergarten teacher who was 70 at the time and had been doing it for about 40-50 years suspected something was wrong with how shy I was and only when my sibling came during parent teacher conferences did she think this kid is a Little Normal because at least I played with them 😭 why do I walk on my toes and pace around listening to the same song on repeat for 4 hours. Why do I SUCK at making conversation irl and freeze up and feel stuck like I can't do anything when people are watching me. What is wrong with my brain other than the fact that I'm mentally a little unwell

Not me (finally) buying a physical copy of 2005's Pride & Prejudice because I don't trust streaming companies to not take away whatever digital version I might purchase.
(Okay, yeah, it's totally me!)

Okay so ARTIST group (fandom?) Of Tumblr. I've got a question for you.
I was at Sakura-con in Seattle this last weekend (the one that just happened) and as anyone who goes to conventions as just a con goer knows, Artist Alleys and Exhibitor Halls are the huge things besides the autographs and panels.
Anyway to my question. If you go to cons as an artist, how do you like to interact with the guests?
I try to comment on the art I see in each and every booth I come to. Obviously I can't buy from every single one. Believe me. I want to. I really do. But my funds are extremely limited (and still very limited on a good year).
So I do what I can.
I'm not an artist though in the physical sense. I'm a writer and a gamer. My writing is my art. But that doesn't always translate to physical art. But I can easily look at art and think... Oh I really really love the way this artist plays with shadows here. Or I love the way this one does eyes. Or ... So on
So I have gotten to the point where I will tell the artists. Many of them seemed very happy with me just talking about their art with them and what I love about it.
Can this be enough for some artists at conventions? Should I keep doing this or do you all not like it when someone does this?
I just want to be able to give more than just a quick once over and move on, you know? Let them know that their art and their time is appreciated even if I can't buy something.
Oh and I always take business cards too if I really really liked something because more often than not, they sell their art outside of conventions too. So that's another way I can maybe later get something from them when I actually CAN afford it.
So artists of Tumblr, is what I'm doing at cons something you guys would appreciate or would you rather I do what most everyone else does and just scan and go?
This is entirely a real inquiry. I want to make sure I'm respectful but still be able to let you all know, hey I see your art. I'm loving it. Please keep making the art.
(do reblog this if you like so I can get a good response from all fandom artists, not just the fandoms I'm intimate with)

kickstarter
A good work colleague of mine has put up a Kickstarter for a sick looking puzzle adventure game with a thick physical manual for the spaceship you’re aboard and an app where you apply the things you’re learning there to fix problems on the ship.
Tumblr media
I immediately backed it on the digital tier (as downunder shipping costs are brutal) but I highly recommend a physical copy of you’re in Canada or State-side.
Tumblr media
Make sure to go wish them luck and consider backing them! They’ve got a ways to go, but this project has a hell of a lot of potential~

harry and meghan really can’t catch a break the media in the uk have basically ran them out with their constant scrutiny they have had since they got married and now they’ve left the uk all eyes are still on them now that they have returned for the the queens funeral all because at the vigil that was held earlier in the week they were holding hands the media are obsessed with them just because they are the only royal couple to show affection towards eachother I just don’t understand why the media won’t leave them alone and let harry seek comfort from his wife by holding her hand.
