Being Jewish with dual US-Israel citizenship, having family in Israel, being left-wing, and having an MA in Middle Eastern Studies AND dealing with the events of October 7th onward has felt like being the most drunk sober person in the room/somehow drunk and sober at the same time. 24. What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone down? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?

Maggie: I already attempted another lifepath for Maggie actually. Before turning her into maelstromer, she was very quiet, calm, wouldn't hurt a fly, and very friendly. Instead of completely wiping that off the chalkboard, I decided to turn this into a headcanon, which this question can definitely come into play when it comes to her specifically. Being the person she is now is the person she always wanted to be. She grew up adopted, after coming from Japan, and moving to NC with a family she didn't know, who taught her how to be pure, how to put other people's feeling ahead of their own, she was raised to be an empath, and honestly, as nice as it was to help people and be there for people in need, it hurt her own feelings in the process, she forgot what it felt like to put her own feelings first, and it brought her down quite often. So often in fact, she was faking it. She pretended to be happy, she pretended to be super friendly when in fact she wanted to scream, wanted to fight, wanted to put herself first. She finally had that opportunity to completely change her life when her adopted parents were killed in a gang war between Tyger's & Animals. This completely turned Maggie's world upside down and her life did a complete 180. She felt revenge in her veins, she felt her true self coming out, she felt like anger she had been holding into for so long. She still loved her adopted parents, even though they wanted her to be this sunshine empath who helped everyone. She knows they didn't intentionally set out to drain her emotionally, but she knew now that they were gone, it was time to be the person she was meant to be. She went to Dum Dum for a plan, they had met before, and she knew he would be able to gather up some people for this revenge plan, and revenge there was. It was the first time Maggie felt truly free, when she was able to scream and shout and kill in the name of her parents who raised her when her bio parents refused, she took that empathy and that anger and conjoined it into one feeling, finally able to be herself. It's what made Maelstrom feel like home to her. She can be herself, on her happy days, her angry days, her sad days. They never judged her, they never questioned her. So to answer the question, it's not so much how different her life would be if she MADE the choice, it's how damaged her life would be if she CONTINUED it.

Vaughn: This one is a little more triggering. This is just my personal headcanon, so TW: transphobia. Vaughn made the best choice he could have ever made by leaving the Bakker clan. The leader of the clan was his ex boyfriend, someone who knew of his transition, supported it out loud, but was very against it behind the scenes, and hurt Vaughn a lot because of it. Took advantage of Vaughn & made him feel incredibly unloved. His ex would go around telling people behind the scenes how much of a freak Vaughn was, and how unimportant he was, while at the same time telling Vaughn he loved him. It was such a confusing time for him, it made him feel so unwanted, at the same time, he was being praised for how good he was in the bedroom, how good he was as a co-leader, how good he was at following directions. But Vaughn was never truly able to be himself as long as he stuck around the clan, and knew he needed to plan an escape. Vaughn thought that moving to Night City was the scariest thing he could have ever done, he'd never been to the city before leaving the clan, he traveled the world, but NC was never a place he thought'd he go. He loved it there, he felt himself there, he was able to be proud of himself and even started to love himself when he got there, and meeting Jackie was a gift to him, who supported Vaughn immediately and even paid for his top surgery. Had Vaughn stayed in the Bakker clan and joined up with snake nation, he might not even be alive. Had he continued down that lifepath, it could have ended tragically. He thought moving to NC was the scariest thing ever, when in reality, the scariest thing was staying in a place that would have permanently destroyed his life.
