my piece for the Hemisphere: a Witch Hat Atelier seasons themed zine! thank you for having me! they're having a leftovers sale until stock runs out 🖋🍀🌷🍁❄🌧 WIPs + inspiration board + symbolism under the cut! got some requests to put this on my inprnt! the site has sales very often & you can grab it as a small or big size print.

I had a pretty good idea of the composition from the get-go. I took inspiration from art nouveau (primarily Alphonse Mucha), German fairy tales, and some 1920s perfume ads. I wanted the girls to look like fairies, akin to The Root Children by Sibylle von Olfers.

Olly just didn't work out in this drawing due to time restraints. I do love him very much though.

I actually kinda stopped making illustrations like these (including the TGAA/DGS tarot card + TGAA/DGS zine pieces a while back) because they were starting to get very hard on my arm, as I had an RSI (repetitive strain injury) a few years back during school. (Not putting the onus on the zines at all ofc! I genuinely love working with zine projects! it's def a me thing WAHAHAHA. my style was getting too anime and too detailed for my liking and everything was just taking forever to finish ngl. but I didn't have time to experiment with a more simple style outside of all of my deadlines)

I think that realizing you need to stop is okay. It's something that Shirahama teaches us in her story and I want to learn to take it to heart.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD (for those who havent read the story I guess)

each character's symbolism:

- Coco - spring, clovers - Coco is the quintessential spring girl, and I wanted her to symbolize new beginnings, and oh boy did Coco bring a big one. The four leaf clover in particular symbolizes luck and good fortune - to some characters, Coco may have brought fortune, to others her presence brings misfortune, take that as you will.

- Tetia - summer, gladiolus - the name "gladiolus" comes from the Latin word "gladius", meaning "sword", based on the shape of the flower. you can interpret it as "you pierce my heart", perfect for a girl like Tetia, who has a contagious energy, with a romantic and grandiose nature.

- Agott - autumn, marigold - I read somewhere marigolds symbolize strength and power, perfect for our little magical powerhouse Agott. They can also symbolize jealousy (yellow flowers in particular have this association), which reflects on her rivalry with Coco in the beginning.

- Riche - winter, snowdrop - The white color of snowdrops has a strong connotation to innocence, which reflects on Riche's wish to stay a child forever. It can also symbolize rebirth and new beginnings (like Coco's clovers), as the snowdrop is the first flower to bloom in the spring, when the snow has not yet melted. I wanted the concept of "rebirth" to associate with Riche's friendship with Euini, and of his sort of "rebirth" into a new being.

- Qifrey - he does not have a flower per se, but as the caregiver and educator of the four girls, he represents the rainy season - precipitation being the one thing that binds all of these seasons together. (Note some areas of the world do not have a rainy season like where I live). I think somewhere along the line I wanted to put hydrangeas behind him, to really bring out the "rainy" theme, but the thought probably got lost somewhere in translation...

- bg flowers - honestly I just picked whatever. white lily, daffodil, hydrangea, zinnia, tulip

My Wittewife's name is Clara (Claire for short) Clawthorne!🧡🤎🧡🤎

She's a bubbly, upbeat witch who loves magic, adventure, and most importantly, CALEB lol.

She can also be a bit of a fun-loving rebel too sometimes (*cough Eda cough*) as well as an adorkable dork (*cough Lilith cough*).

Despite her naive nature, she's actually quite intelligent in her own way and ISN'T someone you should underestimate.

Girl's got a DANG GOOD left hook lol.

For her voice, I wanted something cute, sweet, and girly to match her personality, so I chose Twi//light Spark//le from M//y Li//ttle Po//ny and Ilana from Sy//m Bio//nic Tit//an who are BOTH voiced by Ta//ra St//rong (they also both sound the same lol)!❤️❤️❤️

When it comes to Clara's hair, it naturally changes color during the seasons!❄️🌷☀️🍂

For example, in spring and summer, it'll be half brown, half orange, but in winter and fall, she'll be a brunette with bits of orange if you look real close.

ALSO, the reason why she's got long hair in one pic and short hair in the other is because she first starts off with long hair (it's around the time where she and Caleb first meet and eventually become boyfriend and girlfriend), but later on decides to cut it when she and Caleb get engaged.

It sort of meant to symbolize a new chapter in her life since she's going to be spending the rest of her days with the man she loves.❤️💕👰💍

AT LEAST, she would have if YOU KNOW WHAT didn't happen in that cave...😭😭😭

OH, and the blue birdie on her shoulder?

That's 💙Syrup💙, Clara's palisman pal and closest friend!

The Fall Festival is around the corner and nowhere is that more apparent than in the dining hall of the orphanage. The sisters have been hard at work to make the gray stone walls warm and inviting, stringing bright orange paper pumpkins from one end of the room to the other. Small, uneven leaves in red and yellow and gold hang from the rafters on long strings, turning lazily in the rush of air that enters every time the doors open. The children are quick to show you and Theo which leaves they each cut out, pride shining in young eyes that have seen far too much.

Now the dining room tables are covered in pots of paint, paint brushes, and paper. The children are sitting in groups, excitedly painting autumn-themed pictures to sell at the festival. The church had placed a notice, looking for volunteers to help with all the artistry and Theo and Vincent had readily agreed to help. You smile as you watch Vincent in the far corner of the room. He’s sitting on a small stool, holding a ripe red apple in his hand, turning it as he speaks to the children sitting by him, brows furrowed in concentration as they listen to his gentle explanation on the best way to capture the perfect red of the fruit.

A tug on your sleeve tears your gaze away from the scene. A small girl with a smear of orange paint across her cheek asks you to please refill her orange pot.

“Of course I will. But remember, the paint is supposed to be on the paper.” You tap her small nose with your index finger and she giggles as she tries to hide her very orange fingers.

You make your way to the table by door where the smaller paint pots can be refilled. As you’re pouring the color from a larger pot into the smaller one, you feel a hand on your waist. One glance over your shoulder and you can’t stop the smile that blossoms. Theo slides his hand subtly over your hip as he watches you finish filling the small pot.

“Don’t spill, Hondje,” he murmurs, that voice running over you like a warm current of water.

His hand on your hip is certainly not helping you keep your hands steady and that gleam in his summer-sky eyes tells you he knows it. You’re about to let him know that you’re on to him when you both hear it at the same time: the sound of a small nose sniffling. A tiny chest heaving with muffled sobs.

A young boy with hair the color of sunrise and eyes bright with tears has moved away from all the other children and slumped onto the cold stone floor. His fingers, usually streaked with dirt are now streaked with different colors of paint. They’re clutching a piece of paper, the paint so fresh it echoes the falling of his tears as it drips onto the floor. You exchange a look with Theo. You feel his fingers squeeze the curve of your hip. I’ll handle it, the touch says.

Watching out of the corner of your eye, you see how he lowers his large body onto the floor next to the boy, not caring about the cold stone or tiny drops of paint.

“Can I see your painting?” His voice is a type of gentle not often heard from Theodorus.

The little boy sniffs, his face a model of misery. “It’s not good, Monsieur. All the other kids laughed at it. It’s…..it’s all wrong.”

Theo tilts his head, his expression skeptical. “Art can’t be wrong. It can only be misunderstood.”

The boy raises his gaze from the floor to the large man beside him, his wide eyes still glistening with tears but now, there is a small glimmer of something else there as well. “Really?”

The head of messy golden hair you love so much nods. “Natuurlijk”, he says seriously. “Of course. Will you show me?”

The boy sniffs again, but slowly tips the paper away from his chest. He’s painted an autumn scene like the other children. Except his sky is purple instead of blue. The apples on his trees are bright yellow. The grass is red. He’s even added a small brown squirrel with colorful dots perched on one of the branches.

Theo leans forward. He takes his time, his sharp gaze running over every brush stroke, every color choice. He inspects it the way he would any painting. With respect. “What bold choices you have made.”

The little boy wipes his eyes on his sweater sleeve, a piece of clothing that has been patched many, many times. “The other–” He sniffles again, but now sits up straighter, laying the paper down on the floor, smoothing out the corners. “The other kids said the colors were wrong.”

Theo shakes his head, scoffing. “How can colors be wrong?”

The boy points a skinny finger at the sky he created. “They said it needs to be blue.”

Theo glances at him, his own bright blue eyes searching his face. “Why did you paint it purple?”

The boy smiles. “Because when the sun comes up in the morning, sometimes the sky IS purple. And I like how that looks!”

Theo does something unusual for him. He immediately returns the smile. “Well then it’s fine if your sky is purple, isn’t it?” He points to the other elements of the painting. “And why did you choose the other colors?”

The young boy is animated now, shifting on his knees as he wiggles around to sit next to Theo. “The apples are yellow because I like yellow and I like apples a lot so I wanted apples to be a color I like. The grass is red because the grass out in the fields behind the church always leaves my skin all itchy and bumpy and red. And here, the squirrel-” He jabs at the almost dry squirrel. “We had a clown come one time at Christmas and he was-he was so funny, Monsieur. He made me laugh. And squirrels are also funny, with their fuzzy tails and the way they bounce around branches so I made him with lots of colorful dots, like the clown we saw.”

Theo nods, listening intently. “That makes perfect sense, kleintje.” He clears his throat, pretending to ponder something. “You know, you're a very talented artist. And I really like your picture. So much so that, with your permission, I would like to ask the sisters if I can purchase it today and not wait until the festival.”

The boy’s eyes widen in shock. “Really? You want to buy my picture?”

Theo cracks a smile at the wonder in his voice. “I do. But only if you make me a promise.”

The boy nods seriously, his gaze earnest as he leans in.

“You must promise me you'll make another painting for the festival.”

The young boy’s face shines, his heart glowing under Theo’s praise.

“I will, Monsieur. I promise.” He raises his hand, pressing it to his heart, a solemn vow made.

“Good. I’ll be looking for it.” Theo stands up slowly, offering his hand to help the small boy up. “Now go, ask the sisters if it’s ok for me to bring this home today.” The boy grabs his hand, practically jumping up. He bends down, carefully collecting his painting and makes his way toward the closest group of nuns. The oldest raises her gaze to Theo, a soft smile on her lips.

Hours later, you exit the orphanage together. Theo has the painting rolled up and tucked carefully under one arm. You have your hand tucked into his other elbow as you walk across cobblestones littered with dry leaves that crunch underfoot. The sky overhead is a brilliant lavender streaked with yellow and orange, the sun’s farewell as she sinks to her well-earned slumber. You’re about to cross the stone bridge when you stop walking, holding onto his arm, forcing him to stop as well.

He turns to you, a question in his eyes as he looks down. “Yes, Hondje? What is it?”

You rise up onto your toes and press your lips to his. It’s soft and it’s warm and it’s full of the emotion that flooded your body as you watched Theodorus take a little boy’s heart in his hands and raise it up to the light.

When you slowly lower yourself again, he looks both pleased and slightly confused. “What was that for?”

You take his hand, lacing your fingers through his, solid and steady and secure. “Just because.” You smile at him, bright as the emerging stars in the darkening autumn sky. “Now let's get back and hang up that masterpiece.”

✦ 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 ⨟⠀ None!

⠀ ⠀ ★ ⠀ | IT’S WINTER TIME, AND COLE IS outside on the porch with a cigar in between his lips and hot cocoa in his grasp. Winter always seems to coat the world in a silence he wouldn’t get anywhere else.

Faustine isn’t far behind, she’s somewhere in their cozy little cabin searching for the perfect blanket for this chilly night. She emerges from their shared home, the creak of the door signals it. She’s wrapped around in familiar quilt Ana gifted them a few years back.

It was still in perfect condition, Faustine swore to keep the item pristine till she died. Needless to say she adored the gift, in fact… Faustine appreciated every single gift anyone gave to them. She cherished them, although her appreciation may be hard to see time to time.

Faustine sits besides Cole, draping the quilt on their bodies. She doesn’t say a single word to him, choosing to focus on the comfort silence between them. She takes a sip of the sweet thick liquid with a hum, the warmth seeped from the hand made mug Gabriel gave them last month.

It was a sweet sentiment, he always did have a knack for arts n’ crafts. The mug resembled Route 44, tumbleweeds and all. It was really a piece of art. ❛ Reyes did a good job on this mug. ‘S real nice. ❜ Cole praises softly, amber hues study Faustine’s expression for a few moments before glancing away.

She doesn’t say much, the only audible thing that leaves her is the faint sound of her humming in agreement.

There was one thing Cole knew about Faustine. He knew that woman hated waking up on early mornings, she would rather sleep in and get her desired amount of rest. She’s been trying to shake the habit though, it’s obvious by her actions today and the last few weeks of her waking up early just to be with Cole.

It was a sweet gesture though, the bed head and the quiet demeanor in the morning was always a delight. The mere thought caused his lips to curl up into a smile, Faustine watched him with a weariness like no other.

A smile creeps up to her expression as well. ❛ What are you smiling at creep? You look weird ❜ despite her blunt statement, she only cuddles into Cole’s side. Watching him with an admiration he’s never really felt before, he’s had something similar sure. But never this. ❛ ‘S nothing too serious now, so don’t worry your pretty little head about it. ❜

There’s an unmistakeable quirk in her brow. She was obviously not convinced but, she’d get over it eventually. Maybe after a few hours of pestering him, but he’ll be fine.

After a few more hours of dozing off in the morning sun, the couple moves back inside for the remainder of the day. The limbs would intertwine together like fine threads of silk entangling together due to the strength of northern winds.

Something inevitable and habitual. It’s the way they touch each other, these gentle little gestures of love for on another. It sparks something in Cole, something he hasn’t thought about since last year.

And that was marrying Faustine.

The thought of marriage used to startle him, a commit that lasted a life time… with one individual? It used to frighten him to death, he could only dream about being held down in such a manner. He was sure Faustine felt the same way about attachment.

Cole questions a few things in the moment. What was it about Faustine that made him change the way he viewed love? He’s had other lovers in the past, sure. But he just couldn’t shake Faustine. Was it her mere charms that had him like a love sick puppy? Or was it her lovers coo that melted his core?

Whatever it was, it was magical.

IT’S SPRING NOW, AFTER SOME DISCUSSION about spent some time in sweet, sweet Paris. The couple has enjoyed the city so far.

Faustine was a bit annoyed due to the pollen and her allergies. But it was nothing some Benadryl can’t help with.

It seems like the atmosphere gave Cass some courage too, as well as a few talks with Reyes about marriage. Why did he marry Martina? When did it feel right? And kids…

Cole Cassidy has never had any thoughts about kids with Faustine, marriage? Sure. But kids?… It must’ve felt right at the moment. Or maybe it was something he’s always thought about in his heart…

There was one thing he knew for sure, and that was his love for Faustine. Cole loved Faustine with every bone and fiber in his body, there were no ifs or buts about it. That was the main reason he wanted to go to Paris, his love for Faustine. He would propose to her in the city she considers home.

Cole wanted to be her home one day too.

THE SUNSETS, AND THE LOVERS RETIRE TO THEIR hotel room. It was their last day in Paris and it’s was Cole’s final day to ask the question. His hands are clammy and his throat runs dry. All he needed to do was charm the lady, how hard was that?

They were already situated in each others arms, dancing to Micheal Bublé’s 〞 The Way You Look Tonight. 〞Hips would sway to the soft rhythm throughout the shared space. A smile beams across Faustine’s expression, cheeks would glow in a rosy tint at the close proximity.

Cole was the man who could still make Faustine melt into a puddle, the man she loved since she was just a teenager. There’s nothing else for her but to love him, and the way he looks tonight. Eyes would meet and lips would collide, a soft laughter escapes Faustine… and Cole is lost in the moment.

His foolish heart squeeze and constricts at the sight of her nose crinkling up in joy. Words stumble out from her lips, he’s not paying attention of course, but there was an obvious tenderness to it. ❛ Cole, mon coeur. You keep spacing out on me, should we call it a night and head to bed? We’ve got a long trip tomorrow. ❜

He snaps out of his daze, focusing on his lover once more. A dopey smile keeps onto his expression. ❛ ‘S nothin’, promise! You just look lovely tonight. That breathless charm always gets to me hon. ❜ Instead of replying, she places a few kisses against Cassidy’s jawline. Murmuring a few sweet nothings into his ear. It was now or never for Cole.

The hand against her waist gives a slight squeeze. The action causes Faustine to gaze at him with confusion. She nods, waiting for him to continue whatever he had to say. He gets on one knee, removing the ring from his back pocket. Moonlight illuminates the pair.

❛ Hyeon—ju, Faustine. I’ve loved you since we were eighteen, and I’ve done nothing else but adore and cherish you for all those years. This is me, taking a chance with you. God, I might seem like a damn fool right now but I’ve never wanted anything more than this honey.❜

What could she even say to this? She’s too shocked to utter a word, and the tears in her eyes make it impossible to see anything. How long was he planning this? Marrying… her? She must’ve been going insane. After a few more minutes of shock, more tears and uncontrollable smiling. She says yes.
