here's a drabble where toph and zuko are going back and forth about a possible gaang party ten years after the end of the war. it was supposed to be a longer fic that included established zukka and developing ty lee/suki.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Zuko says. As the Fire Lord, his hesitation would be law for almost anyone. But Toph is not almost anyone. Toph is Toph, and she does exactly what she wants.

“You never do anything fun anymore, Lameo,” she tells her.

“I already threw a party. It was just a few weeks ago.”

Toph glares. “You threw a big, boring party for the ten year anniversary of the end of the war. You didn’t see any of your friends.”

“I’m seeing you now,” Zuko says, just to be contrary.

“Nope,” Toph says, “doesn’t cut it. If I don’t get to laugh at Aang and Sokka drunk off their asses, then we didn’t hang out properly.”

“We’re adults now,” Zuko says, “we all have responsibilities? What would people say if they saw the Avatar like that?” Or any of the rest of them, for that matter. It’s not just Aang and Zuko who have important political positions in this brave new world. Every single one of them has a reputation to uphold.

“No one has to see us,” Toph says, rolling her eyes, “we can lock ourselves together in your chambers and get plastered.”

Zuko takes a moment to think about it, then he says, “That’s not a bad idea, actually.” All the fun of a hang out session without the possibility of anything going wrong? If he gives his servants the night off, then there won’t be anyone to even think of disturbing them.

“Of course it isn’t. I thought of it,” Toph says. Zuko finds himself grinning, just a little.

“Uh huh,” he says.

“Okay,” Toph says, “so: guest list. You, me, Twinkletoes, Sugar Queen, Sokka. Should we invite your scary girl friends?”

“You mean… Mai and Ty Lee?” Zuko asks.

Toph snaps. “Yeah, them! And then Suki, of course.” Oh. Yeah. A group get-together would include Suki, wouldn’t it? He and Suki have never really been “friends” and he’s dating her ex now, and he’s sure that it’s going to be awkward. He can manage, though. The rest of the group love her, so he’s sure it’ll be fine.

And he can’t exactly not invite her, right? This is fine. (It’s fine!)

Here, under the cover of shadow and the warmth of blankets, Suki wraps her arms around Ty Lee and leans into their embrace. Bare skin presses against bare skin and their shadows dance together, entangled and enamored. Suki opens her eyes and sees Ty Lee already staring at her, heavy adoration mirrored in her gaze. “You’re safe with me,” Ty Lee says. Suki holds her closer, as if together they can cover each other from any dangers the future presents. Hopefully, they will.

What made you ship it? Well, I recently re-watched ATLA, and the Jinko bit of Tales of BSS was probably my favorite part.

What are your favorite things about the ship? I just love how utterly useless Zuko was during that date. And like... he doesn't have great game with Mai, but he occasionally does act like a boyfriend? But with Jin it was just a total disaster until the moment of lighting the lanterns. And I just love the awkwardness of their date.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Probably that I now prefer it over Zutara, that can't be a popular opinion lmao

Suki/Ty Lee: hell yeah I ship it

What made you ship it? I shipped them in the first ever ATLA story I wrote. And yes... I confess, it was because of the comics where I liked to see them working together as Zuko's bodyguards.

What are your favorite things about the ship? At first it was just the idea of them being sisters in arms in the Kyoshi Warriors, and the overall total lesbian vibe of KW. :) But upon re-watching ATLA, I just realized an even better reason to ship them. Damn, these two girls do NOT like each other lmao. Suki really wants a piece of Ty Lee when they are escaping Boiling Rock on the gondola. That gives the ship the enemies to lovers feel that I just love. I need to include this ship in a future story again.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Yeah, I feel like a lot of people think Ty Lee being a KW is stupid and makes no sense, but eh... I kinda love it. I'm just a big fan of the aesthetic I guess.

Yue/Mai: don't ship it

Why don’t you ship it? No particular reason. I just haven't thought about it. I remember an Azutara fic that had this side-pairing, and I thought it was nice, but ultimately didn't really capture me I guess.

What would have made you like it? I don't know, I would have to think about it more. At the first glance, I'm struggling to find some obvious points of connection for Yue and Mai.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? I'm definitely not opposed to it as a concept, and I would love to be convinced that they work together! They would certainly make a very pretty pair <3

random, but I just realized that in, say, a hypothetical alternate universe where the writers made Katara and Zuko fall in love, get married, and have kids, Zuko would most certainly teach their child non-bending means of attacking/defending themselves. Hell broke loose when Tui was temporarily dead, which left all water-benders temporarily unable to bend. A Solar Eclipse event leaves all fire-benders temporarily unable to bend as well. Katara and Zuko both experienced what it's like for them and all of the fellow benders of their element to lose their powers on a massive alert scale. Zuko and Katara would 200% have their child learn the way of the sword and martial arts. Not just because of culture, but because Zuko and Katara know how scary things get when your bending is turned off in such a serious way, and wouldn't want their child to be defenseless.

AAAAA SO CUTE I LOVE THIS!!! Additionally, their uncle would be the Chief if the Southern Water Tribe and their aunt would be the leader of the Kyoshi warriors. They're fan and sword!!

Let's not forget that Ty Lee taught the Kyoshi warriors chi blocking!! Remember that Ty Lee destroyed Katara. If they have a none bender child theh could go toe to toe with bending masters.

And and and in my AU their kids went through one of these Water Tribe sailing tests that signify maturity. (Really hope Bumi did, Tenzin probably didn't).

Zuko and Katara would want their kids to know all non-bending martial arts so Zuko'd teach them swordsmanship and Katara'd ask Sukka for help and they'd be very normal about that.

Katara: Hey I thought you might want to teach A-

Suki and Sokka, together: Say no more.

(Author's note: in a modern AU Suki is already phoning Ty Lee).

Zutara's kids will be so powerful. Especially the hypothetical non-benders. Ty for the ask, have a nice day💕

Let's say you're one of the writer's way back when Atla was first starting. Bryke has stepped back and let the writers do their thing. What are some things you would keep or remove completely? What are things you would have done differently? What would you have liked to explore more of with the story and the characters?

OOOH good question

I would definitely be giving South Asia, Hinduism, and Buddhism their honour back but making Desi main characters not caricatures. I will pay my respects to those religions by using them properly and not discarding them when you don't truly understand their meaning. And better representation will all the cultures.

Likewise, I would make a 4th (or maybe more) book, so we can see the healing of the 4 nations and flesh out the Gaang and other characters properly. I feel like ending it on book 3 was too sudden, and I hate the comic, so I don't even recognize those, since it is so OOC.

I would make Zuatara canon through some slow burn. I would not pair Aang up with anyone, since he is too young but keep him having a crush on Katara for the Chakra arc (which stays true and respect to Hinduism) but to provide a lesson on heartbreak and moving on. Same with Toph, such a cute little baby.

I will REMOVE those nonconsenual kisses entirely. Basically out with Kataang.

I want to see more of the evil politics of the Fire Nation before Aang defeats Ozai and how Zuko deals with it. In contrast, to how Zuko handles politics being Fire Lord.

I WANT more Suki and her backstory. I also want to see her and Ty Lee fight side by side. It would be so cool.

I would actually have Zuko and Katara speak to Azula after the Agni Kai.

I would keep Sokka's sexism arc.

Not only that, but I would love to explore Yue even more and her take on the NWT

I also want to go in depth with Mai, I want to give her some depth.

Have Aang's character understand the Mahabharat scripture before making a choice. (Maybe kill Ozai)

I want to see a healing arc for Azula

I also want Uncle Iroh to face some repercussion of being an activity member of war. I love Uncle Iroh, and I want to write the consequences and him accepting humbly due to his development.

Book 4 and (leading to adulthood) head canons for the Gaang

Katara: Helps the SWT and NWT, then goes on to become ambassador for the SWT in the Fire Nation

Zuko: Fire lord

Aang: Helping all the Nations to heal

Toph: I think she would totally be the creator of the pro-bender, you cannot change my mind, I think she would also become a teacher

Suki: Girlbossing as a Kyoshi Warriors and being known as one of the best

Sokka: Become Chief of SWT and a skilled engineer

I want Katara and Zuko to find his mother together (so we can get good development)

I feel like I have more, but I will add more if I think of any.

Hi. Im writing my fanfiction on here because writing a oneshot takes more than a month and i dont want to open google docs. (Will be on Ao3 when complete).

Summary: Sokka/Zuko where they want to go on a nice, relaxing vacation but Azula just got out of the mental hospital (again) and Zuko cant leave her by herself so Katara is paid to babysit her. (Modern Setting AU). Azula/Katara.

Zuko has no idea where Azula got the baseball bat. Thats his first concern. The second is this: What the hell happened to her hair?

“Hello, Zuzu,”she greeted. Then she pushed past him.

She showed up at his door at 4 in the morning with a red duffel bag over her shoulder and a black metal baseball bat with lightning decals in her left hand.

Her hair was pulled up into a messy bun. But her bangs. They were completely crooked and angled and an utter mess.

She had bright red headphones around her neck and Zuko could her some shitty metal music playing.

And all Zuko could think was what the fuck.

Azula collapsed onto his couch, dropping her belongings on the coffee table, propping her feet up on the armrest, and securing her headphones over her ears. She closed her eyes.

Zuko closed the door and took a deep breath.

“Hello, Azula. Why are you here? In my house. With me. Instead of… an insane asylum,” he questioned.

She didn’t respond, only nodded her head to the music filling her ears.

He poked her.

Her eyes opened and she glared at him.

“‘Relaxation is the key to a swift recovery’, Zuzu” she told him. He hated that she was quoting Iroh.

She removed her headphones.

“Do you need something?” She questioned.

“Why are you in my apartment, Azula?”

“Did you think i was going to sleep under a bridge like a homeless person? How pathetic do you think i am?” She rolled her eyes.

“Why aren’t you with Mai? Or Iroh? Or Ty lee, even?”

“Mai kicked me out. Ty lee wouldn’t answer her phone—probably on some stupid anti technology shtick because its ‘aura is off’. And Iroh gave me your address and said i was your problem until he got back from Japan. ‘Familial bonding or whatever’.”

“Iroh sent you?” Zuko felt betrayed.

“Yes, Zuzu.”

“Hes not coming back for another month.”

“Guess im your problem for another month, then”

“I have plans, college, a life, Azula! I cant have you living here! Im leaving for my own vacation in a week!”

“You dont want me in your life, Zuzu? Thats cruel. I thought you were the good sibling. Guess I was wrong for once.”

Zuko stalked off into his kitchen. His house was being corrupted by his evil sister because he couldn’t find it in himself to throw her out.

He couldn’t take it out on Iroh. His uncle worked so hard and needed this break.

He couldn’t take it out on his dad. That evil man was in a prison cell on the other side of the country.

He couldn’t take it out on Azula. It wasn’t really her fault she was the way she was. It was their dad’s fault for traumatizing his kids.

Azula was just as much of a victim as he was.

More will be added later and will eventually end up on Ao3.
