Here, under the cover of shadow and the warmth of blankets, Suki wraps her arms around Ty Lee and leans into their embrace. Bare skin presses against bare skin and their shadows dance together, entangled and enamored. Suki opens her eyes and sees Ty Lee already staring at her, heavy adoration mirrored in her gaze. “You’re safe with me,” Ty Lee says. Suki holds her closer, as if together they can cover each other from any dangers the future presents. Hopefully, they will.

“How can we trust her? She’s so clearly Fire Nation. Her clothes, her hair, the coins she had in her bag… I say we leave her here to heal on her own. You’ve already done more than enough, Hanshi.”
“No, she comes with us. For now, she’s our prisoner. But she might be a useful informant or even ally in the future.”
Ty Lee gave a short, painful laugh. What more could she tell them after revealing her most closely guarded secret?

echoes of an empty palace
for @tysukiweek day one: palace-- sorry this is late!
The lushness of the Royal Palace comes as a surprise to Suki. Her only experience with the Fire Nation previously had been the Boiling Rock, and the barren landscape had wormed its way into her mind, drilling so deeply that she had written Ember Island off as a fluke. The vivid greenery that fills the caldera that the Royal Palace sits within came as a complete surprise to her— but it was not the only thing from the Fire Nation that has surprised her in the last few weeks.
Zuko had set time aside to help her find her warriors, when he’d started the long process of freeing the prisoners of war within the Fire Nation, and she had checked each girl off a mental list, the familiar faces lightening her burden of grief. She had mourned them, when she had been transferred away from them, and they were swallowed up by the network of greedy prisons the Fire Nation fed with their most valuable enemies— Suki had expected that she would never see them again. Either they would die or she would and regardless of which doom fell upon them she would have failed them.
It’s more than a miracle that she gets to see them again.
They don’t return to her alone, though.

Azula tells Sokka that Suki is her favorite prisoner, but this isn’t exactly true. Suki is her favorite prisoner from a very particular distance and for a very intriguing reason. One of her girls has taken quite an interest in her, and this interests Azula. She sees the way Ty Lee looks at Suki when Azula brings her along to visit the Boiling Rock, sees the way she perks up at mention of visits even as Mai sinks further into her seat. She sends Ty Lee alone, once, with explicit instructions to terrorize the girl, just to see what might happen. Curiosity has always been one of Azula’s biggest faults, and when she sees the way Suki looks a fraction calmer the next time she visits —with Ty Lee in tow, of course— knowing and jealousy infiltrate Azula’s marrow. She puts an end to the visitations. She’s gotten all she needs from interrogating Suki, and Azula doesn’t think she wants the risk of overstepping her win.
It seems she oversteps it anyway. It happens in the blink of an eye —Azula tastes dirt for the first time in her life, and she finds it to be as dry as it seems. In retrospect, it isn’t a surprise that Ty Lee betrays her. Not only does she trust Mai more than her, but Ty Lee is helping the girl she likes get away while she betrays the Princess who captured her.

Inescapable, Act II
our secret moments in your crowded room
There were tears now, shared between the both of them, and the ache that Ty Lee felt knowing that she was the cause of Suki’s pain gnawed at her stomach. She wanted to throw up, from either distress or her newfound condition.
After shouting and crying and the initial shock subsided, they discussed their options, of which there seemed very little. They spoke of terminating the pregnancy, but that would require more shady dealings and the risk of someone in the palace finding out. They spoke of running away and not telling Zuko, but it didn’t feel right to exclude him, and they would lose everything if they were to go into hiding. It was clear that they were stuck between a rock and hard place, unable to do much of anything but live out the decision that Ty Lee had made, the night that she had orchestrated.
She tucked her head against the crook of Suki’s neck and breathed out a hundred apologies, though she wasn’t sure that was enough.

This winter, we are hosting a new celebration week for pairings between female characters in the Avatar universe!
Between 1st February - 7th February, creators and fans of all stripes are invited to produce, share, and appreciate content for often underappreciated wlw pairings from ATLA, LOK, and the Kyoshi novels together.
